Many of us associate Robin Williams with funny didactic movies that always end with a moral value. Well, in this live on Broadway standup routine (recorded for HBO from the Broadway Theater in New York City) Robin Williams throws whatever morallity he has out the window and enjoys an open mic. Watching this made me laugh until I was crying and suffering abdominal pain. For those of you expecting "Flubber" or "Hook" you will be quite suprised that Mr. Williams is extremely dirty and political as he throws controversial jokes straight at the camera. To explain the topics he covers is impossible because he is so fast and is capable of changing subjects so fast that to try to explain what it is about is far beyond my ability. In fact, he goes so fast, he finishes an entire CASE of water, which is probably about 20 bottles. More specifically, Williams takes advantage of his large talent of character acting and astounds his audiences. As he jumps back between is French "Look, I give a cigarette to a baby" to George Dubya saying "Our economy is--oh, look at the kitty!" He is not afraid to offend anyone as he examines religeons like Episcipals, Jews, Christianity, Puritanism, Calvanism, Buddism, Hinduism, and Islam. Because of the fact that this is a DVD, it comes with a few extra features. First is an interview which is very charming with several chuckles allthe way through. Also included is a track of noises, which are all of Robin's wacky sound effects that he creates throughout the stand up routine. For those of you who are always excited to find a secret easter egg, there is also a track called "Parental Advisory" that is 2 minutes of all the curses (which are EXTREMELY plentiful) that Robin uses. The feature is in PCM stereo as well as Dolby Digital 5.1. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound I thought seemed a little weird since at random times you will hear applause behind you and it sounds unnnatural most likely due to bad mixing/editing. I would not, however, recommend any of this DVD for children under the age of 13, depending on how mature your children are. This probably deserves to be rated R or possibly even NC-17 because of it's extremely naughty language, vulgar topics and sexual content. All-in-all, Robin Williams is absoluletly hilarious, I think this is probably the best stand up routine I've ever seen and is definately worth the price.
So what's the problem? I think perhaps 99 minutes or so of one man comically riffing about anything and everything is still perhaps a bit too long for its own good. I've watched this on more than one occasion, and by the hour mark I always feel myself getting rather exhausted by Williams' highly energetic schtick. It is not necessarily that his material starts to become significantly weaker or repetitive (although his French-bashing does get a little tiresome after a while), but while you still marvel at Williams' energy level...I dunno, I just kinda got tired of it on some level after a while. Williams' energy may not flag, but ours does...at least until he rebounds at the end with some good bits about American sports and then about sex, particularly Viagra. Believe me, when you see his take on Viagra, you will laugh hysterically in spite of yourself. In short, for me, "Robin Williams: Live on Broadway" is a mostly brilliant but perhaps overlong standup comedy piece (a standup comedy "epic" if there ever was one). It would have gotten five stars as a more focused hourlong show; instead, this one sprawls until we in the audience start feeling a little exhausted by his endlessly energetic (and highly profane) style. And yet there is enough brilliant stuff here---his riffs about the war in Afghanistan and homeland security rival the best, and overall there are plenty of small but great bits here and there that will grab your attention---so that this is definitely worth seeing. Certainly you will be amazed that Robin Williams actually pulls the whole damned thing off at all. Recommended. NOTE: I have seen "Robin Williams: Live on Broadway" as it first premiered on HBO, and for some reason it is slightly longer than the program that appears on this DVD. It is beyond me why CMV Home Video thought it necessary to make some small cuts to the program for this DVD edition. (For instance, it cuts out a lines during the parts where he cracks humorously about Michael Jackson and the Enron scandal.) At least, though, the program is not significantly cut (it's only missing about a few seconds worth of material from the initial broadcast), and overall it is very much intact. (Besides, HBO and its other channels have been showing this marginally-cut version of the program on its stations ever since, anyway.) Just thought people would like to know, though.

Amazon.com Whether he's talking about airline flights, cab drivers, or memories of Halloween and an ill-fitting Superman costume, Seinfeld's observational humor is as timeless and sharp as the day he first performed it. Even the most familiar routines (such as the one about pharmacists with a superiority complex) are like old friends who still haven't overstayed their welcome. Seinfeld's delivery is polished to a shine--he's a consummate professional--and an impromptu Q&A with his appreciative audience demonstrates that he's equally adept with a fast and witty comeback. This performance certainly wouldn't be the last we'd see of Jerry Seinfeld, but from the perspective of phenomenal fame and fortune, it's a fitting farewell to the classic "bits" that took him to the top. --Jeff Shannon Reviews (47)
The thing which is disappointing about this HBO special, is that you probably have heard it all before. Or most of it anyway. A fair half of the material is used either in the Seinfeld TV series, or SeinLanguage. However, there is enough new and hilarious material to keep true fans happy and to convince them to buy this DVD. Oh, but don't get me wrong. I had a lot of fun watching this special. I thought it was quite funny, and I liked it enough to buy the VHS when I saw it on sale at a local bookstore. A good follow-up to this DVD would be "Comedian" which you could describe as a sequel to "I'm Telling You For The Last Time." This is the documentary of how Jerry Seinfeld rebuilds his act and assembles an entirely new repetoire of jokes. Very interesting and very enlightening.
If you really want to hear a truly funny and intelligent stand-up comedian, check Chris Rock. ... Read more | |

Aerosmith aren't just the greatest band in America - they are the greatest band in the WORLD - still going strong today despite that some of today's acts in music aim for the youth culture. Aerosmith have the potential to rock our worlds for as long as they can handle. I would recommend this VHS to anyone who even just remotely likes them. You can see the videos of "Eat The Rich", "Livin' On The Edge", "Ragdoll", "Dude (Looks Like A Lady", "Angel" "The Other Side" "Janie's Got A Gun" and the MTV classics "Cryin'", "Amazing" and "Crazy" which feature the absolutely stunning Alicia Silverstone who oozes with sex appeal in all three of these videos. Between each video you get the chance to witness behind the scenes, interviewing the Bad boys from Boston about going on tour, the making of the videos etc. A delightful package which charts the success of this legendary band. Keep a look out for Edward Furlong (of Terminator 2 fame) who stars in the video to the timeless classic "Livin' On The Edge". Anyone who likes rock's greatest band should purchase this. A true gem. I can only hope their record company decide to release a live DVD soon of one of Aerosmith's gigs because that is the only thing I can imagine that would be better than this fantastic video!! GO ON AEROSMITH - KEEP ROCKING MY WORLD!!
Aerosmith is the best American rock band, period. It wasn't until the mid eighties that the really caught up with the rest of the world. The hits started cranking out on their "Permanent Vacation" album with cool rock like "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)", a very cleaver smack at make up laced heavy metals stars. I also can't forget the sensitive, sweet sounds of "Angel" (talk about your AC Top 40 stuff) and the unforgettable "Rag Doll" (Joe and Brad at his best guitar work not to mention a great drum part on behalf of Joey and thumping bass by Tom). The "Pump" tracks also rock hard. You got everything from the catchy horns of "The Other Side" to the painfully great love county type song "What It Takes". The ultimate "Pump" songs are Aerosmith's generally best ever from the mesmerizing story of "Janie's Got A Gun" to the party fest of "Love In An Elevator". Then comes the mixed bag of everything that is "Get A Grip". Everything from the breakup standards like "Cryin'" to the driving "Eat The Rich". Don't forget the new tracks "Walk On Water (sounds like old experimental Aero) and the hard rock wisdom of "Blind Man". The extra "Deuces Are Wild" is a big could have been hit from the group off of "The Beavis And Butthead Experience". The band really has it together here. Great party music with that's fun and with nice writing. It's not as big as some of their old Columbia stuff and not as gritty either. It's just the band playing their best and Steven singing his heart out. I think I like the "Pump" tracks the most and the "Grip" tracks are the least awesome (still really good though, just not as exciting to me). If you love hard rock, this set is really for you. The album is full of the best of the decade and is a lot better-played then hair band stuff.
That out of the way, this was (in 1994, at least) the best way to get all their "new" era hits in one place. Even though the guys now probably have more hits collections than some bands have albums, this is the best place IMHO for a new fan of their 1987-1994 to start. Starting with 87's PERMANENT VACATION, we have the hilarious, pop/metal classic tale of "Dude Looks Like A Lady"; the sweet but still rocking 80's power ballad "Angel"; and the somewhat old style bluesy hard rocker "Rag Doll." 1989's PUMP gets four songs. The funny office fantasy arena metal "Love in an Elevator"; the serious and edgy yet melodic "Janie's Got a Gun"; and the more stripped down power ballad "What it Takes"; and the somewhat Rolling Stones sounding rocker "The Other Side." 1993's GET A GRIP gets the biggest representation with five (!) songs. The cannibalism in-jokes of the underrated minor hard rock hit "Eat the Rich"; the mid tempo and more serious classic rocker "Living on the Edge"; and the three soundalike longer rock ballads "Cryin," "Amazing," and the emotional huge hit "Crazy" (with the Alicia Silverstone video). There's also three songs that were recorded new for this collection. The hard rock swagger of the slightly 70's yet modern "Walk on Water," the more serious, also older sounding "Blind Man" and the poppy semi ballad "Deuces Are Wild." There's several smaller hits and popular album tracks missing. PV's title track and "Hangman Jury"; PUMP's hard rockers "Young Lust" and "Monkey on My Back"; GRIP's "Line Up," as well as the Run DMC version of "Walk This Way." I'd recommend anyone a step up from a casual Aero' fan of this era to pick up all three of these albums represented here, but, as I said, this is a good starting place to see which songs you prefer. All those albums have a slightly different sound. PV was the pop/hair metal sounding one - like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard meet classic rock. PUMP was the gritty hard rock one with some 80's thrown in. GRIP was the part retro, part modern mellower classic rock one.
Being smart and knowing when to strike when the iron is hot, Aerosmith came back with Permanent Vacation in 1987 on Geffen (their first Geffen album, Done With Mirrors, was extremely underrated, check it out). Dude (Looks Like A Lady) was the first single and went to #14, becoming their biggest hit in a decade. However, this comeback single was not a fluke, it became the first of 11 straight singles (every single one collected on here) to make the top 30 (Eat The Rich and Deuces Are Wild were both smash hits on rock radio, and Blind Man and Walk On Water were the new tracks, Blind Man peaked in the 40's and Walk On Water barely got noticed when released in early 1995). Aerosmith were not only hot during 1987-1994, but they were actually hotter than they were in the 1970's! Only 2 tracks (Rag Doll and Walk On Water) of the 15 recreate the gritty bluesy classic rock sound that Aerosmith perfected in the 1970's, so many fans of classic 70's Aerosmith aren't so fond of this "poppier" sound. However, for many of us who grew up in the 80's and early 90's, this is the Aerosmith we knew first. I hope one day that there will be a comprehensive 1973-1982 collection (instead of a ten track) of the Columbia years, but when it comes to the Geffen years of Aerosmith, this is as good as it gets. The 2-disc "Young Lust" collection includes way too much from just 4 albums that it'd be cheaper to just go and buy the 4 albums seperately. BIG ONES is a Greatest Hits collection that delivers, every track on the album was a hit in some form or another, and there's nothing from 87-93 that's missing.

While it sounds great, the picture is horrible. On my TV (28 inches screen), the screen is blurry and cropped. You cannot see things in sharp contrast. I put it in my DVD-Rom and got a sharper image. But I would rather play this on TV. This is a disappointing DVD. I hope HBO or Motown or whatever company produced this video contact the makers of the DVD since it is certainly not an official Diana Ross release. It's a cheap transfer from VHS to DVD. Fans of Diana Ross and this concert video have been warned.

I'm not a fan of his English music, but it worked well in this concert. Marc Anthony really jams with his salsa music, which he is primarily known for. He exudes so much energy into his performances that you really have the feeling that you're there. I took off a star because of the time he spends in between songs. He pretty much talks nonsense and at one point praises Tito Puente and Ruben Blades way too much as well as Julia Roberts and her ex-beau. He's also a bit over dramatic. It's a little annoying. That's just a personal gripe. It's no reflection on his music or his amazing voice. Highly recommended.
The former RMM recording star (now signed with Sony Discos) is amazing as he captivates his audience in this special that was televised live on HBO in 2000. Singing some of his classics in Spanish and new hits in English, Marc truly is a glowing presence on stage as his fans, both male and female, are energized and moved by his gift of song. This DVD captures the intensity that Marc Anthony can only provide onstage. Whether you're a fan or an avid listener to salsa music and/or Spanish ballads, "Marc Anthony - The Concert from Madison Square Garden" is a must see. Gifted, blessed, and talented are the words I can use to describe this artist and this performance.
Yeah who cares about Rosie O'Donnel and Julia Roberts. We see Tito Puente perform on stage!! Marc had to announce these people as a part of the HBO gig, I'm sure. The English songs don't anyway take over or lessen teh effect of his salsa classics performed. If your a Marc fan, you won't be disappointed I promise! At a good price too!
