4-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise
This is one of those films that people mistakenly assume to be only action and no more. Do yourself a favor and rent or buy this film before making that judgment. Yes, it's about a two childhood friends who got caught up in the war and one becomes a sniper. But it is more than that. The acting is very good. Linus Roche gave the kind of good acting that he usually does. Vincent Perez was also good in this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed!
See this fil for better understanding of how childhood friends can become enemies during war. The performances were great and Vincent Perez just gets better with each movie. Candace Serviss

5-0 out of 5 stars This film conveys what it was really like....
After spending three months doing humanitarian work in the former Yugoslavia in 1993, I didn't think a film in English, made by an "outsider", would ever convey what it was really like over there. I was wrong. Shot Through The Heart is remarkable in the way it shows the psychological effects of the war. Watching it, I felt transported back there. I recommend this film to anyone who wants to truly understand how the wars in Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, and Kosovo happened. But I also recommend it to anyone who appreciates good film-making or wants a film that is an experience, not just a diversion.

5-0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT FILM ABOUT FRIENDS MADE HOMOCIDAL
Shot Through The Heart, is an important film of our time that perhaps not enough glimpses how ordinary, middle class people can become both killers and innocent victims.

Two boyhood friends, grow up closer than brothers ... tied together by their world class competition rifle marksmanship. One is a Serb and the other a Muslim, at first their lives are knitted together by their shared sport and friendship. Soon, events in former-Yugoslav overtake them. They become thrust into the Bosnia fighting on opposite sides in and around Sarajevo. Inevitably, they must face one another with their rifles.

Quite likely, the important lesson in this true life adventure-drama is, this deadly contest can happen any time, to anyone, and anywhere. As the film begins, it seems the ordinary-ness of the characters will protect them from killing their neighbors and friends. Of course, these tragic people cannot escape the approaching, inevitable tragedies of war.

VERY WELL DONE AS HISTORY, DRAMA, AND ART. Excellent acting, directing and filming throughout.

1-0 out of 5 stars An superb depiction of the madness that is Bosnia/
A movie that moves too quickly to really tell the story of Bosnia and it's war. But, it does in the space of two hours show how the best of friends can become enemies. A film that shows the madness of the Serb's false history as an excuse to kill their Muslim friends. Having been in Sarajevo I can attest to the reality of the film and it's horror. A film that needs to be seen by anyone who wants a view of the Hell that was Sarajevo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello Again!
Hi. I know I've already reviewed, but that was my first very own, public displayed review and I didn't like the way I explained this movie. I really agree with that review where it says, "As the story progresses, you get to see what's going on inside Moll's head." That review was very detailed and the author was probably a top student in writing when he/she was in school. Now... ...I first saw this movie on television in 1996 on PBS.WNED. And most people that know me, all know that I love these kind of movies where they take place back in the 1700's and 1800's. I started to watch this luckily just after Pat Russell finishes his very discriptive (and kind of story spoiling) introduction. I thought that Alex Kingston was very good as Britain's most wanted woman. The other cast acted well too. Moll is a woman who is born in Newgate Prison: a place for the people who don't have any sense to what they're doing. Moll starts out as a poor, stressfull servant girl to shy to stand up for her problems. To a thief in London (in which turns into a gay sort of affair with a female friend!!). Her story involves many different feelings. Moll can make you shed a tear or two (as when her FEMALE FRIEND is hanged). She can make you laugh your head off (like when her 5th husband, Mr John Bland, dies from shock and she takes away the money she lays upon his eyes). She can also make you suspensed (she doesn't hand you a clue about what she is about to do with Mary Edwards, that child that lives on St. Jude's street). Andrew Davies writes a splendid adapation of Daniel Defoe's book. It's close to the book and is very faithful to it. I think it will be a classic in time, like GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) and A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (1940 something). I hope it will be a classic. This is my favorite adapation of this tale and my favorite movie of all time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Moll Flanders
I first saw this Masterpiece Theater production on PBS and I fell in love with it instantly. Alex Kingston shines brightly as Moll Flanders, a woman determined to make her way in life as a gentlewoman. She will do this by marrying the richest of men, but then she meets someone different, who makes her believe she doesn't have to have money to make her way. A great supporting cast follows Kingston (who happens to be my favourite "movie star") as well. Excellent acting, cinematography and costume design add to the fabulous results of making the 18the century come alive again. *Note: There are two musical scores for this movie. One by Mark Springer, the other by Jim Parker (which won an award). This one has the score by Jim Parker.*

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly and thoroughly satisfying . . .
I stumbled on this movie by accident and after just a few minutes was riveted. What a gem! Moll as played by Alex Kingston is just fabulous. Nothing I've seen her in since allows her to showcase her talent so fully. The story has many robust twists and turns, the characters are ribald and more alive than most real people I know, and Alex is the glue that superbly holds it all together. Don't miss this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good version
I watched the miniseries when it came on PBS and I was excited when it came on DVD but have been disappointed. Several scenes have been omitted from the DVD version including Roland's first romantic overture to Moll in a beautiful circlular garden, and when she finds herself spiraling into wickedness she prays to God for help and then turns to the camera and says "do you think He helped me, has He ever helped you?" They're small omissions but I considered them important and with no subtitles of any kind, I can't recommend this edition and regret buying it myself instead of seeking out the PBS version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ruminators sounding better than ever!
It was in 1990 I first heard the Ruminators opening for Tempest, if I recall. They had a very unique sound that really grooved. Soft, airy, but down to earth. I bought their first CD and loved it, especially their remake of the Beatles "You Can't Do That," which is one of the very few times that someone has done a better job of a remake.

This new album is most excellent, and they sound excellent. The songs flow together quite nicely and it's a real pleasure to listen to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Duo brings sounds of love to airy folk creations
Independent songsmiths offer what those who have gone on to record with big name studios cannot. Namely, music that sounds almost live and true to the performing arts. That has never been more truer than with the ruminators who vocals, harmonies and hooks need no production value to sound good. This is contempory folk on the lighter side. Mostly rousing balads and songs of new-found love, there is much to spur you on to a better mood. Listen and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars what a treat...
what an absolute, tasty little treat. its smart, funny, and sometimes wonderfully crude. though sarita choudhury is billed first on most reviews & press, naveen andrews steals the show--its his film, all the way. and hes utterly beautiful--again, even as a citified drugstore cowboy. this movie abounds w/ exceedingly bad hats & seedy western wear, and "dude" is said a few too many times; but it seems that attwood is using these devices as affect, not as a british understanding of country music & its culture, but rather, as a way to contrast southall & londons tightly packed markets with the big sky & wide open places so revered in country. here, in _wild west_, you even find cheatin', drinkin', love for mama, & a porch-dog (whos a little star in his own right), as well as intersting use of the word "redneck." thanks to the (wonderful) exploitation of that nebulous musical genre known as "alternative country," _wild west_ maintains a refreshing obscurity (contrary to the above review, there is, thank god, no garth brooks on the soundtrack). the only morsel missing is willie nelsons "mamas, dont let your babies grow up to be cowboys," which would have said it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Off the beaten path comedy
One of the best indy-type films I have seen in a long while. If you like non-formula films, then see this one. The cast is first rate-- anyone remember Kip from 'The English Patient'? The writing is excellent, and it always hits the right mark when searching for a laugh. One of my favorites! ... Read more

Description

In this energetic and bold adaptation, Conan Doyle?s legendary characters are portrayed with a pace and vigor that capture the spirit of the original story. Sir Charles of Baskerville lies dead on the moors of his family estate. The look of abject fear on his face and the presence of animal footprints around his corpse suggest the impossible; that the ghost of a fearsome hound, long feared by the Baskerville family, is responsible for his death. As the new heir, Sir Henry Baskerville takes up residence at the estate, legendary detective Sherlock Holmes and his trusted associate Dr. Watson arrive to investigate the mystery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I have enjoyed all the film versions of this great novella that I've seen (e.g., Rathbone/Bruce, Cushing/Lee, Brett/Hardwicke), and before I saw this one I felt the Cushing/Lee adaptation closest to the story's spirit. I am convinced that Conan Doyle would approve this new adaptation for it meticulously depicts: (1) the evil of Jack Stapleton (played to perfection by Richard E. Grant) manifest through the atmosphere he creates (i.e., rational fear of the natural dangers of the moors and the fear of the supernatural (the Baskerville curse and the mythic hound) as he works towards the end of murdering Sir Henry Baskerville; and (2) the true character of Dr. John H. Watson and the mutual respect between him and Holmes. Those familiar with the Sherlock Holmes canon will applaud this version's depiction of Dr. Watson as the brave, intelligent, discerning, and strong-willed companion Conan Doyle created.

The sole shortcoming of this version was that while it depicts Holmes as the sleuth-hound, it does not show either Holmes' deep concern for justice or his compassion for human suffering. (Viewers who want to see these traits should see either Rathbone's or Jeremy Brett's performances.) Richard Roxborough's depiction of Holmes is one-dimensional but -- incredibly -- that does not diminish this superb adaptation.

Purists, stop complaining and let go of this one; it gives too much pleasure.

1-0 out of 5 stars FYI
DO NOT buy this DVD, "Hound of the Baskervilles" from Amazon.com, it is not a Region 1 -- I don't appreciate paying for a DVD then finding out that it is not Region 1 and therefore will not play on a North American DVD player. If a website wishes to sell Region 2 DVD's it should be honest and state the truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Vile Baskerhound Tosh
Yes - very difficult to revisit such a well-known story - but best advised not to try.

Why?

Roxburgh - plank. Hart - juvenile with weird head and lounge lizard tash.

Here in the UK the supporting cast are all better known than the leads - thus, you don't know who you're supposed to be watching. Much "Oh look, it's whats'ername..." slows matters to a crawl.

Excisions and additions - exiguous. Depiction of cocaine usage in toilet stall - presumably derived from hilarity-filled production lunches?

Dialogue not bad; moorland photogenically wet, much like entire production.

Avoid.

3-0 out of 5 stars well done
This version of the Hound is very well done. Matt Frewer was the best Holmes of recent years, but Richard Roxburgh gives a fine performance and Ian Hart is good as Watson. Lots of atmosphere and some re-toolong make this an interesting take on the oft told tale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hounded by re-makes with a TWIST
There are two very good aspects to this new Holmeswork presenting the Baskerville legend. #1 The musical score is excellent. #2 The scenery is atmospheric and well suited to the purpose of the plot. But in looking at certain sections of film, can we seriously believe that our rather heavy set escaping prisoner outruns those guards? Oh, they fell into the bog...well that explains it! Watson as a rather quarrelsome character? (Very far from the Nigel Bruce edition) This updated version of the Hound twists the traditions of previous work to gain more drama to cover the lack of budget which pervades every update of films today. One need only compare this film with previous attempts or compare the Old Moby Dick with the recent debacle. In support of this version I will say that the actor playing Sir Henry Baskerville gave new vitality to the role and is perhaps the best performance to date. But against it finds Stapleton is really the Scarlet Pimpernel. Or shall I say the Scarlet Pimpernel was hired to play Stapleton but ended up revealing that he is really the Scarlet Pimpernel? There is no recount of the Baskerville legend in the traditions of previous films, you won't see the dramatic "Hell-fire Club" that was in the Hammer edition from 1959. No, we have humanized Holmes & Watson down to just two guys renting the same apartment receiving a doctor's call over his codified responses to an coroner's inquest. Also you might note the strong resemblence of Inspector Lestrade to an aging Lawrence Olivier (was this an intentional joke?) All in all it is time to stop updating the classics and place the classics on DVD. Let's face it, they just don't have the money anymore to do what should be done. I am giving this a higher rating than others due to effort in writing and some aspects of the work that are memorable but old Doyle deserved better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD - COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER
This is a well-researched and ambitious production. Good for those just getting into the Cuban Revolution, and also for those of us who have followed it for years. It suffers from choppy editing, a common problem of TV-movies. Mr. Martin's characterization of Fidel is basically sound, though a bit underplayed at times - when Fidel is wound up he's a real fireater and this is why his audiences endure those 3-4 hour speeches. My major criticism of the script would be the abrupt manner in which Castro suddenly announces "I want to build a Marxist-Leninist state" - before any relations with the USSR and its expression of commitment to him. This is completely unhistorical. Other things that I would have included as a scriptwriter were, in turn, not raised - such as his university activism - but I can understand time limits in trying to compress a dramatic life and subject into a two-hour screenplay. Overall an enjoyable production.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bearded One
Films that attempt to dramatize the lives of legendary figures often have great difficulty explaining who all the surrounding characters are and deciding which events in their lives to include and which to skip. In that regard this film probably does a better job than nearly any docudrama I can think of. To follow the action of this film you need not have read a book about Castro's life and you can probably spot the editorializing on your own. This is a rather well balanced account of the life of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro, and nearly a remarkable document considering it comes from the USA. Actor Victor Huggo Martin does an outstanding job capturing the charisma of the Cuban leader, particularly in the period of his days as a student activist. Castro's near suicidal optimism and complete belief in his destiny of toppling the corrupt regime in Cuba when so many others had failed is well portrayed. The relationship between Castro and his most trusted advisor Celia Sanchez is handled with tact. Castro's various romances are portrayed to spice up the film a bit but are not dwelled on too much. The film also touches on some of the more obscure facts of Castro's life, such as a custody controversy involving his son Fidelito, not unlike the one of Elian Gonzalez of recent years. My criticism is small, I would have liked to seen Castro's post-revolutionary tour of New York dramatized when he charmed the masses of Harlem and met with an unconvinced Vice-President Nixon. The murderous nature of the Batista regime is also not emphasized as much as it could be, and while the death of revolutionary Abel Santamaria is well portrayed Frank Pias and others are not even mentioned. As entertainment the film is first rate, the performances are top notch and it is nice to see Latino actors playing the key roles. ... Read more
