4-0 out of 5 stars Beverly Hills 90210 on acid? Sounds about right.
I bought this movie from a clearence sale at this video store. I had never seen it before, but I thought I'd really like it because there are a million people in the movie that I love. Plus, I thought, if I really hated it I could return it.
So, I watch it. And I end up loving it. I gave it four stars because all of the [...] scenes between Heather Graham and Ryan Phillippe got on my nerves. Other than that, it had a great script, great acting, great characters, it was just full of perfection.

The thing I loved about it the most: It's not an average movie. It's dark, and extremely unusual. Gregg Araki is now one of my favorite writers and directors (along with Tim Burton and Darren Stein).
Another thing that was great: You can understand where the characters are coming from, and they cover practically every teenager type from the late 90's. Valley girls, goths, geeks, everyone! It's realisitc in some sense (You know, besides the aliens).
Seriously, I have a lot more appreciation to most of the cast members: Kathleen Robertson, Jordan Ladd, Christina Applegate, Rachel True (Even though I liked all of them before) and this movie introduced me to James Duval, who is a very good actor, and had a great character who I could really relate to.
Oh! Another thing about this movie: The bright colors. I was really distracted by them. From the color of the val chicks dresses, to Lucifer's hair.
The val chick scene was probably one of the most exagerrated scenes in movie history, which made it classic.
See it! I don't recommend it to everyone, but I do recommend it to people who have ever felt confused ,or misunderstood about life, love, and more than anything: death.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative...interesting...whatev...
When I first saw "Trainspotting," I thought THAT was a messed up movie that was good because of its accurate portrayal of heroin addicts and the fact that it do so was a gutsy move...which was another reason it was good. I personally feel that movies should take chances and challenge the viewers' mettle for watching, no matter how blatant or unnecessary it may seem. There is something to be said for a subtle message portrayed through the worst possible plot, script, acting, etc...it shows a willingness to accept the ridiculousness of the world in which we live. Gregg Araki has never failed to push the envelope to an extreme that sickens most people, sometimes especially the people who like his films. And I have to say...I LIKE this film. "Nowhere," for all of its colorful characters, and its unique penchant for not showing real life, but showing life through the eyes and perceptions of some really screwed up teenagers is a courageous endeavor for any writer/director, particularly one who hasn't been a teenager for two decades. I mean, Araki is in his '40's (I think), and somehow he has done what practically every other adult in the world hasn't...he hasn't forgotten what it's like to be a disgruntled, confused, self-destructive teenager on a drug trip. It shows in his writing. The plot follows the events of a day in the life of these L.A. teenagers, which ranges from typical relationship issues (interesting to note is that almost every character in this movie is bi- or homo-sexual, an issue that pops up in almost every Araki film), drug addictions, suicides, car-jacking from local skinhead gangbangers, muscle-bound drag queens, and even a few alien abductions. Sounds like a regular day to me. The script is so campy that it's actually unnoticeable that these people are using words like "gnarly" and "radical," (among other colorful composite words and metaphors) years after that language went out of style...or maybe it hasn't...it is L.A. and I've only been there once. Some philosophies thrown in either from the main character, or from the Teen Idol, or from the televangelist also add to the pathetic existentialist message this film sarcastically conveys, yet it also makes fun of those messages, just out of the film's sheer anarchic idiocy. It's actually humorous that the film can mock these messages and still get them across. Even the characters' names are pretty silly. Dark, Moses Helper, Cowboy, Lucifer, Egg, Ducky, Ski, Zero, Handjob, Jujyfruit, etc...but like the language, the names go unnoticed. Araki's direction and his script somehow derive a great deal of strength from its weaknesses. It's a film that's so bad that it actually becomes good because of it. However, this film is not for everybody. The eroticism of the film is bound to offend and annoy, ranging from interracial, bi- and homo-sexual, masturbation, piercings, bondage, and rape. While some of it is shown in a somewhat "normal" fashion, there is a splendid level of depravity surrounding these situations, and yet it is also important to note the level of nudity is kept very minimal. "Whatev..." I think this movie is innovative and has a level of genius behind it. Not for everyone, but certainly for people who need a kickstart in the chokehold that is life. I also recommend the two previous films "All F**ked Up," and "The Doom Generation," both of which are even harder to watch than this one (hey, both had to have material cut to achieve an "R" rating...that says it all).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best movie ever ever ever ever

1-0 out of 5 stars pondering
I don't even know why I saw this movie. The Doom Generation is, in my opinion, the worst movie ever made (and I'm not the only one who believes this I can assure you). so why did I see Nowhere? Well I figuired that a director couldn't get it so completely wrong more than once. I was wrong. I'm trying hard to figuire out why so many people like this movie, it has so many scenes that are put in for shock factor that are just stupid. I really don't want to see a guys nipples ripped off. Oh, by the way this movie doesn't say anything about teenagers, I should know, I STILL AM ONE!. Yes I am 17 and I have never felt or experienced half of the things seen in this movie. So many adults want to make their teen years seem so dramatic that I think that some of them acctually believe that they really were like that. If you really want to see a good movie about growing up and the hell that it can be go check out KIDS. now that is a wake up call of a movie.

thought this was gonna be a good movie..by the way it looked...though you dont always get what you want...this is truly...junk...nothing good is in this movie. the big watsed cast include... Superior to both Kids and Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is a snarling satire that has the emotional range to prompt rage, fear, laughter, and grief in a viewer. Three L.A.-based, almost-twentysomethings--an incredibly foul-mouthed Valley Girl (Rose McGowan), her puppyish boyfriend (James Duval), and a sexy bad boy (Johnathon Schaech)--take to the road after a series of comic collisions with skinheads and gun-toting convenience-store clerks. While secret lawmen and voyeuristic TV cameras follow their movements, the fugitives gradually warm up to a three-way sexual relationship that wraps them in a profound, renewing innocence--an innocence then stolen by a wrathful America. Araki skewers the usual villains: the media, homophobes, gun nuts, Gen-X stereotypes. But there is so much more at stake here than meets the eye, an extraordinary anger and fear about predatory intolerance and purposelessness about the young. The DVD release includes the original theatrical trailer and production notes. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Red"," White" and "Blue" on the Run
Everybody made a big deal about Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers", calling it brilliant. But I thought it was ... One of the worst movies ever, too over the top and condecending. "The Doom Generation" gets it right with a mixture of satire, music, and a punk attitude.
The movie stars Rose McGowan as Amy Blue. Both she and her boyfriend Jordan (James Duval) are sitting in their car sharing a moment when Xavier (Jonathon Schaech)leaps into their car and thay have to get out of there to avoid the goons chasing Xavier.
After that, they embark on a road trip around L.A. They get involved in a bloody holdup, killings, and are being chased by homophobic maniacs, the FBI,and people who constantly mistake Amy Blue for someone else. The movie has a tongue in cheek quality that I felt accurately mirrored the teen angst rebels on-the-run scenario. Rose McGowan makes the movie with her witty one-liners and her attitude driven performance. It's wild and outrageous and has an ending that definitely caught me off guard. I also think the soundtrack, which I bought,is pretty good. With gore, nudity, ...undertones, and enough metaphors ... , this one's not for the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rose and Gregg tear up the screen!!
What drew me to this film was the sexy chic on the cover.. Rose Mcgowan made this role her own.. Gregg Araki directed the film and her very well.. The film is about two lovers played by Mcgowan and James Duvall. They pick up a stranger who is being beaten up by a gang of kids.. after picking him up (by accident).. they try to drop him off at a convenience store.. trouble ensues and the twosome becomes a threesome.. they begin to travel across the state to avoid the police.. on their journey they meet up with some very strange characters who all think they are lovers of Mcgowans, and try to take her back by any means neccesary.. each time, something bad happens.. and each time they run.. finally, trouble catches up with them..

This movie is a prime example of how movies should be made.. its an indie classic in the making.. a cult hit if you may.. it never lets go once it grabs ahold.. watch and enjoy.. you won't be dissapointed..

1-0 out of 5 stars This film stinks.
"The Doom Generation" is a piece of garbage. It tries to be so many things and fails on all levels. It's not art and it's not good entertainment.
It tries to be as violent and funny as "Pulp Fiction" and "Natural Born Killers" are and it fails! "The Doom Generation" tries to shock the audience with violence and even there it fails! I guess one could call it a boring and cheesy comedy. The only thing to laugh about it's how predictable and boring it is. Still, I give it 1 star for the scene where the "heroes" of "The Doom Generation" show a bit of compassion for a dog.
Otherwise, it's as boring as a rat's ass!

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-The-Top is the absolute understatement
I rented this movie basically because of the fact that it touted itself as a "road flick," a genre that I'm usually a fan of. I'll admit the gratuitous violence in the beginning had me laughing just because of how corny it was presented, but this wore itself out several minutes later. The film tries to loosely have some kind of "hell" theme by continuously referring to $6.66 as payment for different items they buy along the way. We get it. You didn't have to do it 7 times. I wasn't sure exactly what theme the writer was trying to convey, but it doesn't matter because the story it was based on was so bad anyway. The filmmakers try to use shocking visuals and group sex to (I guess) grab the attention of the audience, which is good because it diverts that attention away from the terrible story that's going on. Don't waste your time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Over Cooked?
Normally, I don't care much for movies that try to hard to be shocking but this one does leave an impression. The entire film is jam-packed with subliminal messages and 'eye-candy' visuals. There is a story here, with no satisfying conlusion, that is entertaining as he77 to watch. The ending to this film is "overly-shocking" by which I mean not shocking because it tries so hard to be shocking, but it will suprise you. I give it 3 stars because it is not the best movie ever but it leaves a lasting impressioin. I guarantee it. ... Read more

Hard-core and unsentimental, this low-budget road movie/romance between two HIV-positive gay men manages to be bizarre, bitter, and intriguing. Figuring they have nothing to lose, Craig Gilmore and Mike Dytri hit the road as fugitives, where they act out bad-boy fantasies amid provocative conversations. Director Greg Araki, who also wrote the script, does a decent job of juggling black humor and bleak rage. It's a tough movie to watch, but nihilism rarely looks this good. Araki continued his bleak look at life with later films, The Doom Generation and Nowhere, both of which pander more obviously to self-involved Gen-Xers. --Rochelle O'Gorman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Thelma and Louise' with a twist
Gregg Araki expertly and faultlessly takes the 'buddy' film and elevates it with black humor, nihilism, and a bittersweet love story in this little gem. He angrily 'dedicates' it to a Republican government which cares nothing for the suffering of it's citizens with AIDS. Sad to say, not much has changed since the days of Bush I when this remarkable film was made.

"The Living End" opens with Jon (Craig Gilmore) being rather glibly told he is HIV+. Dazed and confused, his outlook on life and work is forever altered. One gets the impression that he was rather a 'goody two-shoes' prior to this announcement, but that all changes when he meets Luke (perfectly played by Mike Dytri), a stunningly handsome, sweet hunk on the lam. A veritable magnet for trouble with his in-your-face anger toward the homophobia which surrounds them, he is also HIV+. Jon and Luke begin a violent, surreal, humorous crime-spree and passionate love affair (one of the most honest on film). They fight, break up, make up, make love, and ultimately come to terms with each other. The world around them is hateful and senseless, but they will protect each other.

"The Living End" (Araki's masterpiece and the best HIV film ever made) has finally been released on DVD by Platinum Discs, for which I am deeply grateful. But it truly deserves a full re-mastering on the level of Criterion, with comment by its extraordinary participants. I mean, whatever happened to the magnificent Mike Dytri?!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Living End.
This movie fell short of my expectations. After reading other reviews I was prepared to be thrilled, but frankly, I wasn't. I really was dissapointed because I very much enjoy the directors other films, but this one fell short. Sometimes gay films get decent readings simply because of the homoerotic material. While there are some very powerful scenes in the film, there is a lot of lull time as well. The first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes were the most interesting visually and narrative wise. (...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Pea-Brains' Big Adventure
Early on in the film, one of the anti-heros goes into a parking garage and writes on a pillar "Society is responsible". And that's the point of this mixture of nihilism, self-pity, and stupidity. Mostly, it's a series of bizarre, phony scenes filled with nutty, unpleasant people. The story becomes a road movie, when two HIV positive gay men go on the lam after one claims to shoot a cop (the scene is never shown). While on the road, they commit some boring crimes, engage in unsexy sex scenes, speak gibberish, and act like fools. The aggressive one appears to go crazy, while the other one gets sick, but no one gives you a reason to care. Not one character in this putrid mess displays the ability to think and act logically. Clearly, this film is (un)inspired by "Thelma & Louise", but without the charismatic leads, well-written characters, interesting story, or technical competence. The only person in this film who displays any talent is actress Mary Woronov, a veteran of trashy films. In her role as a flirty lesbian, and she displays a combination of malice and comic irony that outshines her dialogue. But she's only on screen for a few minutes. The rest of the actors appear to be amatuers, as do the photographers, sound crew, and director. As for the two leads: Mike Dytri talks like he's reading from cue cards and doesn't understand the lauguage, while Craig Gilmore seems to be bored or hung over. And the appearant message about HIV (take no responsibility for your life and disregard everyone around you)is not only dumb, but offensive. This film does a better job at portraying gays in a negative light than anything Jerry Falwell has said, which is why the positive reviews floor me. Those who rent this movie are proceeding at their own risk.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very low-budget and a bit out-dated
It's hard to believe this film is only ten years old, because it seems a bit tame by today's standards, compared to how it was perceived when it was released. The film is shot on an almost non-existent budget, the acting is weak, and the chemistry between the two protagonists is not the strongest. Still, it has its moments, telling the story of two HIV-positive men who have nothing to lose, literally, including their lives. As with most low-budget, independent films, it takes a lot of patience to get through some of the quirks, and perhaps a few viewings to appreciate what is really going on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey Brian, lets learn to spell.
This movie rocks. It is also ashame that people can't stand seeing realily and have a deep seated need for gloss. Or maybe their homophobia is showing???? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than many high-profile romantic comedies i 've seen
Splendor , the story of confused ordinary girl Veronica who enloys living a life in a threesome is really a refreshing romantic film experience. Having been directed with a speedy Mtv-like aura by Greg Araki , the film achieves to be both funny and tender. It's hard not to love it's three lead-actors , especially with the killer-lines they get to say in certain moments of the film ( "Who do you love?Him or us?" ) .All the cast delivers some good acting but the one who , in my opinion shines is Matt Keeslar as the goofy yet appealing Zed , an ex-drummer who eventually becomes his basic rival's best friend in order to get to be with Veronica too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Film
This is a daring topic and I wish more theaters had shown the film. Can two men love a woman and share her in a way that makes it work? This movie attempts to answer that question without compulsively tacking on moralistic, "don't try this at home" endings where the relationship ends disastrously almost before it starts with jealousy-crazed, immature tantrum-throwing on the part of the protagonists. It also blows a few stereotypes in a delightful way: the two men in question seem like normal, heterosexual guys, if a bit immature; the woman is a nice, girl-next-door type who is just trying to find someone to love her and hits the jackpot, rather than a nymphomaniac. Somehow, it's the rest of the world that starts looking a bit strange after a while -- nobody else seems to get it.

The film isn't very explicit, which has its pluses and minuses -- other movies that have dealt with similar scenarios invariably do a thoroughly awkward, uncreative job of portraying a threesome, so it would have been nice to see an improvement on that -- but I think Araki wanted to focus on the romantic, emotional side of a threeway relationship rather than the sexual aspects, which this film does quite well. I would also have liked the film to be a bit longer to allow for more character development of the men (it's told from the woman's perspective so it's easier to develop her character than theirs); what was it about the men that made the woman think that it could work between the three of them? Those points aside, this is a serious film and I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, enjoyable romantic tale.
'Splendor' is a wonderful film by indie director Gregg Araki, who with such films as Nowhere, The Doom Generation, and Totally f***ed up, has been dubbed "The God of Alternative Gay Teen Cinema." The film opens on Halloween night at a costume party, where out heroine, Veronica, an aspiring actress (is there any other kind?) meets her Prince Charming (literally), Abel, a freelance rock critic, after he accidentally runs into her. As their eyes meet, the two realize that they are destined for each other. As Veronica begins to walk away, due to protests from her lesbian best friend Mikey, Abel asks for her number and she gives it to him. Less than five minutes later, Veronica sees the gorgeous drummer of the band playing at the party, and they immediately have sex, without even an introduction.

It isn't long before Veronica is steadily dating the two men, with their permission of course. The two men know that they are sharing the same woman, but they have never met each other. When Veronica invites Abel to one of Zed's concerts, the two men run into each other and complications arise.

This film deals with a daring topic and I wish that more theaters had shown it during its theatrical run. Surprisingly, the film isn't very explicit, but I think that Araki wanted to focus more on the romantic, emotional side of a threeway relationship rather than the sexual aspects, which the film does quite well.

This movie was very enjoyable and somewhat different from the corny romantic comedies out there, although the end did manage to take that route. The script was fresh and funny, and the performances were great. I love Kathleen Robertson and its been good seeing her in such daring roles lately. Johnathon Schaech was terrific as always, and Matthew Kessler, who plays Zed, is one of the sexiest actors I have ever seen. This is one I can watch over and over and I am eagerly anticipating whatever will come next from this great director. Highly recommended for those who want to see a slightly different romantic comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A polyamorous twist wait twist wait happy movie.
Polyamorous people come from all directions on the continuum and so does this movie. We are given a variety of characters with all their foibles, scars, and blemishes and somehow most of them rise above their faults. Working through is a theme lots of new movies are dealing with. Pay It Forward, Matchstick Men, and As Good As It Gets are examples.

This movie is about one possible path we might take as urban, emotional, confused yet sexual beings that want an inclusive life instead of an exclusive one. That said... if you prefer movies with "perfect" characters in them, then "Saving Private Ryan" and "Matrix" are more your style I suppose. If you liked the complexity of Cabaret and the quirky of Singles, then this movie is similar and worth seeing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Love Araki, Hate this movie.
I too must echo the sentiment expressed earlier in these reviews. The female lead is the most selfish, unsympathetic character I believe I've EVER seen in a movie. She uses and abuses EVERY man that she comes across. Forcing each adoring suitor to abide by her wants and desires if they wish to have any sort of relationship with her. I simply cannot bring myself to feel any shred of pity for Robertson's character as she jumps from one emotional freak out to the next. Dragging her lovers unwillingly along for the ride and playing them off of one another to get what she wants out of each relationship (guy 1 = sex, guy 2 = emotional/Intellectual support, guy 3 = MONEY).

I will simply ask this question: If the female lead was replaced by a MALE lead, who treated WOMEN in the same way that Kathleen Robertson's character does to the three men "in her life", do you think that this movie would still be "crazy and kooky fun"? I, personally, don't think so.

I think that you can see where I'm going with this.

Go rent Doomed Generation, Nowhere or Totally... if you want a real taste of Araki. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Movie With Fabricated Good Things About It
Gregg Araki's "Totally F***ed Up" is one of the most horrible movies ever created. The break in segments, flashing signs of quotes to live by, have no relevance to the movie. The characters are all typically fake. You don't believe any of them are gay except Deric and he's bashed during the film. Then the ending...how miserable! I believe that films like this should not exist outside of the "hard to understand Sundance Film Festival" category.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay!
WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF THE MOVIE I ORDERED IT RIGHT AWAY.I GIVE IT AN AVERAGE RATING BECAUSE I WAS EXPECTING MORE.THE ACTING WAS OKAY BUT THE STORY WASNT REALISTIC AT ALL, SO I RECOMEND RENTING IT BEFORE YOU BUY.

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the most truthful films I have ever seen.
This is also one of the most depressing films I have ever seen. The movie starts out with a newspaper article telling us that 30% of all teenage suicides are committed by gay teens. So immediately I am thinking: "Oh man, one of these kids is going to kill him/herself." (I was right.)

The lives of these teenagers consist of hanging around doing nothing, hanging around doing drugs, and having sex. Some of them have jobs, but it does not look like any of them go to school. This is also a very depressing but realistic portrayal of way too many teenagers lives-both gay and straight.

This movie is good because the teens have to deal with many issues that face gay teens often these days. One of the teens is gay bashed-he is not killed, just banged up pretty bad. One of the teens is kicked out of his parents' house when they find out that he is gay. A couple of the teens find out that their boyfriends are cheating on them, but the two guys deal with this pain in very different ways.

The ending of the movie sucks, in my opinion, because there is very little closure--which I guess is realistic, but it is not very satisfying to the viewer. When the movie ends one of the teens is dead. One is still recovering from getting gay bashed-he is also one of the guys that found out his boyfriend was cheating on him, so he is doubly miserable. And the one, who was kicked out by his parents, is still trying to find some place to live-he is not living on the streets he is living with the friend who got gay bashed. So, basically, this movie ends, and I get the feeling that nothing is going to improve for any of the surviving teens because their lives are still going nowhere and they really do not seem to be that motivated to make their lives go somewhere more positive. The fact that this is what the characters' lives are like (going nowhere fast) probably goes a long way towards explaining why one of them ends up killing himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and graceful..
I watched this movie not knowing exactly what to expect.. I had seen all of Gregg Araki's other films, and I am one of his biggest fans.. The movie is kind of slow moving at times, and it fumbles for words a lot, but at the same time, it shows a generation in turmoil.. the characters in this movie represent the teenagers of the current generation.. this movie tells the story of a group of gay friends who deal with the worst s**t a teenager has to go through.. it covers, aids, sex, homosexuality, love, drugs, and suicide.. During a time when these kids are just learning what each of these things are, they have something new shoved in their faces.. none of them really know what life is, or what is to come, but they all fell that they have nothing to do wirth it or no part of it.. Most of the people i knew when i was that age went through at least some of those same feelings.. the overall feeling i had in the movie was disturbed.. i wasnt sure how else i felt until i watched the last credit and i felt upheld and relieved.. i saw how bad my life could have been and what i could have had to go through.. this movie is one i think all indie film fans should see if not own.. watch it and love it for yourself..

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth Rocks
Independent filmmaker Gregg Araki takes an everday look at several gay and lesbian teenagers (4 gay boys and a very cute baby dyke couple ) whose friendship provide a '90s-style family unit. This flick mixes together a head spinning/heart wrenching combination of queer teen angst, homophobia, AIDS, suicide, love and hope..

I really liked the parts where the the kids were just "talking" to the camera about issues and their feelings. It was so bitterly honest I just couldnt believe it. Very unusual, and touchingly rad. BRAVO! As you may remember, everday life for any teenager means crisis, loneliness, rebellion, and the search for love. Growing up gay adds another dimension to the angst and turmoil of teen life. This flick shares a rare, honest look at teenagers. They arent made out to be Clueless or given a Hollywood "treatment" to make them more glittery and sellable. This film will shock you, make you laugh and most likely make you remember the pain and desperation of being that 'alien' boy or girl who just didnt seem to fit in with barbie and ken.. ... Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance. Rose McGowan (Scream), James Duval (Nowhere), and Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!) star as a trio of friends (Schaech's character actually being a complete stranger who steps into their car and into their lives one club-hopping night) who end up on a sex-and-crime spree that draws the fixed stare of television coverage. Araki makes a case for their continuing innocence in a society whose anti-outsider malevolence is barely disguised in the media but is quite naked out in the heartland, where a punishing level of bigotry is not unknown. Araki's jokes and techniques are crude yet forceful, and his anger is absolutely clear where Stone's was obscured and overreaching. The climax is among the most shattering and enraged scenes of '90s cinema.

I guarantee it. ... Read more
