In 1850, pirates loot a temple in the Amazon jungle, plundering gold, jewels, a brightly colored parrot. After one pirate drunkenly sets their ship aflame, he washes ashore on Coral Island in the South Pacific, where he buries a casket of golden booty before collapsing. The bird witnesses all. At this point, The Real Macaw fast-forwards to contemporary Australia, where a teenage boy named Sam (Jamie Croft) spends more time with his Grandpa (Jason Robards, whose American accent is a bit out of place) than with his bickering family. Grandpa rehabilitates tame birds and releases them into the wild, but he has one special bird--the very parrot plucked from the Amazon, now substantially older.

But it turns out that Grandpa is deeply in debt; when an accident puts him in the hospital, his son (Sam's father) decides to sell the old man's house to pay the bills. At this point, Sam discovers that Mac the parrot is no ordinary bird. Mac can talk--and he doesn't just repeat words, he can hold up his end of a conversation. To save Grandpa's house, Mac and Sam hatch a plan to fly to Coral Island and dig up buried treasure; but when a nasty archeologist gets wind of the plan, he secretly follows them. Worse still, Coral Island is now a tourist trap; can Mac still find the treasure when a luxury hotel is built where it was buried? Great family movie.
A very entertaining movie about a very old parrot named Mac and morrally very educational. A young boy tries to help his family and ends up on a wonderful adventure with a talking parrot. Treasure hunting and pirates and beautiful scenery are all to be expected in this great family movie. My 6 and 8 yr old daughters loved this movie. And I loved it for its good acting and unique story and the great values it was teaching as my children sat spell bound.

I bought this movie because I have a B&G macaw and love them. It was entertaining. Any parrot lover would enjoy this film.

I love Macaws
Hi, Mac, You are a great actor and entertainer. I wish I could understand everyting you spoke. I purchased this video for my love of macaws but it is not only that. This film is one of the best comedy I've ever seen.

Exciting Adventure With A 150 Year Old Parrot
Exciting, well-polished and believable story, with wonderful scenery. Encourages problem solving skills, honesty, assertiveness and respect for elders. Enchanting. Kids were fascinated by the pirates, tropical islands and talking parrots. They wanted to hunt for treasure themselves. "It showed me how kids can help solve problems without doing bad things." Best for ages 8 to 12.

Cute Movie!
This was a very entertaining storyline. It was very similar to the movie "Paulie" in many respects. If you have seen that movie and enjoyed it, you will probably like this one as well. (If you haven't, then I guess you've got two movies to rent!) "The Real Macaw" was an excellent family movie / fantasy / fairy tale rolled up in one. The macaw added a lot of humor to the movie. John Goodman's voice was a good choice for the bird's voice, and his lines were usually funny. We have a macaw, and the attitude of Mac was right on the money. Used To Love This Movie
This used to be one of my favorite movies! I absolutely loved it! It's really cute and the animals are really cute too. It's great for kids and adults, but it's more of a kid oriented movie. Highly recommended! Definitely see this movie! It's adorable! ENJOY!

Delightful adventure of a darling Golden Retriever Puppy
This is a wonderful family film you will watch over and over and over! It's the story of a darling little puppy named Muffin who thinks he's destined to see the world and live as a wild dog! His adventure is based on an island off Australia and he meets many delightful friends! This is a fun animal adventure and nothing heart wrentching or awful happens so it's great for children of all ages as well as parents! It's also a great gift idea as everyone will enjoy it! It's very humerous and the voices are animated and refreshing! A truely fun endearing film that you will enjoy again and again!

They have a small hot air balloon and Muffin jumps in it!He flies over the city and lands on an island.He now calls him self Napoleon like the great navagator.He's goal is to become a wild dog.He goes trew many avents like running into a cat on the island.He mets many friends. Excellent entertainment!
This television production is family entertainment at its zenith. Perhaps best suited for girls (my daughters take turns pretending they are Vickie, the lead character), although both my three-year old son and I love it as well.

Tightly constructed moralistic tales, interesting characters, solid acting, gorgeous scenery (New Zealand), sentimental music and a terrific horse. 4+ stars from a picky person. ... Read more
