Will Cain (Cooper) on this his happiest day of his life having a wedding and retirement ceremony (from being the town Marshall) has his past suddenly become the challenge of a lifetime. Vengeful returning outlaws are seeking Cain. Everyone wants him to go on his honeymoon and leave town immediately. His sense of loyalty & duty is to stay until the new Marshall arrives. Problem no one stands beside him to defend the town. Will Cain must do it alone. What is so wonderful about this classic black & white western is the real-time scenario from about 10:40 am until 12:00pm "High Noon". Clocks & railroad tracks are the major ingredients to the suspense. These desparados are coming on the noon train. This is a great movie and "The Making of High Noon" with Leonard Maltin is wonderful. You'll be watching this movie more than once. This is a western to have in your DVD library now!
A morality play that was deliberately produced in stark black-and-white to heighten the mood, the story revolves around Cooper's character, the aging Marshal of Hadleyville who, when the film begins, weds Kelly's character. Cooper has retired and plans to return after his honeymoon as a store keeper because his wife is a Quaker and a pacifist. Plans immediately go awry, however, when it is discovered that a notorious killer whom Cooper had arrested and was expected to have been executed, was instead pardoned. The killer is expected to arrive back in town on the noon train to take revenge on Cooper. Three of his equally savage gang have already arrived and are waiting for him at the train station. The townspeople urge Cooper to flee with his new wife, but as he starts out of town, he stops, then returns, convinced that he has a responsibility to protect the town and bring the outlaws to justice. Pinning the marshal's badge back on, Cooper tries to deputize residents, but no one will help him and he is forced to stand alone. In powerful scenes, Cooper is forced to ask for help time-after-time but is turned down by residents who refuse to accept civic responsibility or acknowledge the debt they owe Cooper, rationalizing their decision not to act. Kelly doesn't understand her new husband and threatens to leave on the same noon train if he persists in remaining as the marshall this one last time. Kelly eventually begins to understand what drives Cooper but only after forming an unlikely friendship with his former girlfriend, who teaches Kelly about loyalty and character. Ironically, it is Kelly the pacifist who saves Cooper's life by picking up a .45 and killing one of the gunmen. In the last scene, the steets are utterly deserted until the gunmen are killed, then the townspeople, who had been hiding, flock around Cooper and Kelly. Without a word, Cooper removes his badge and drops it in the dirt. He and Kelly leave together. Throughout the movie, the stirring music and the real-time focus of the minutes ticking by until High Noon, serve to increase the movie's tension. The film combines elements of love, trust, duty, honor and courage in unexpected ways that are both thought-provoking and entertaining. The DVD version is crisp and clean, the story as powerful today as when it was filmed. If you have never seen this movie, you owe it to yourself to pick up this DVD.
During these 90 minutes, Gary Cooper will try to get help from the local population, old friends, and a man who wants to be the next sheriff (Lloyd Bridges). But it will not be an easy task. Add to that the fact that his brand new wife abhorres violence, and threatens to leave him less than two hours after the marriage - in fact she says she'll leave in the train that brings the outlaw Miller to town. People think this is a western classic. Wrong. "High noon" is surely a classic, but not a western. It only happens to be set in the old west. To say the truth, "High noon" is more like a thriller with a Hitchcockian feeling to it. The western setting (violence, lack of respect for the laws, gunfights, dry and sun-scorched landscape, etc.) is present to add to the mounting tension and suspense that grow with each shot depicting the face of a clock and the relentless passage of time towards noon and the train arrival. What makes this movie great is the seemingly dead-end situation, the great dialogues, and very good acting by Gary Cooper (which earned him an Oscar, when the Academy Awards were not given for political reasons), Grace Kelly, Lloyd Bridges, among others (and Lee Van Cleef, the infamous "Angel Eyes" from "The good, the bad and the ugly" - he doesn't say a word, but those eyes are surely creepy). I will not give "High noon" five stars because I felt the script could be a little more developed. The ending is too rushed and kind of unsatisfying. But this is an excellent movie nonetheless. And, I say it again, this is not a "western" in the common sense of the genre. Grade 8.0/10
A seemingly unusual cast includes Gary Cooper ("Sergeant York", "Pride of the Yankees") as the good-guy out-going marshall, Grace Kelly ("Rear Window") as his new wife, Lloyd Bridges ("Sea Hunt", "Airplane") as the deputy, Lee Van Cleef (the "bad" of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly") as one silent badguy, Lon Chaney ("The Wolfman"), and Henry Morgan ("MASH"). The movie proceeds in nearly real time - it starts about 10:30 AM and ends shortly after noon - and clocks are increasingly prominent in nearly every scene. The leader of the badmen, Frank Miller, who was sent to prison by the marshall under a death sentence but was released, is now coming to town on the noon train to kill marshall Kane. Three of his friends are waiting at the station to greet and assist him in killing the marshall. That same morning, Kane is getting married to a violence-abhoring Quaker woman and is going to give up being marshall because of it. After learning Frank Miller is coming to town, the wife convinces Cane to essentially skip town and they leave, but the marshall gets his sense of duty back and returns to town. He and his wife argue, and she is determined to leave on the noon train. The judge also packs his things and leaves town. The marshall's deputy also quits. Kane goes around town trying to organize a posse, but only one capable man volunteers (the other is a one-eyed drunk) but he subsequently backs out. Cane is forced to face the men alone. I won't spoil the ending. At a time when movies (even bad ones) were being made in color, "High Noon" was shot in black-and-white, trying to get an unglamorous look to it modeled after Matthew Brady's photographs of the civil war, and succeeds. There is no beautiful sky and clouds, or cactus and sunsets. It is great cinematography however. Oscars for Best Actor, Editing, Song and Score. Reasonably-priced DVD picture and sound are good. It has an average commentary by daughter of actor, son of singer, son of writer and son of director. Also has a short documentary, a fair behind-the-scenes, and a 5-plus minute radio interview with singer Tex Ritter.

The cast is very good with Jodie Foster and John Hurt standouts. Foster is as good in this as she was in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. She has moments of pure magic...I get misty eyed. And John Hurt's "Wanna take a ride?" is my favorite character. The DVD transfer is one of the best in my collection. The picture and sound are excellent. If you're into 2001 A Space Odyssey and the like, then Contact should be on your shelf.
If you have ever read Carl Sagan's books, you'll see that this movie touches upon the usual staples of a Carl Sagan read: the foundation of religion vs. the foundation of science, the mutual misunderstanding and struggle between those governed by curious optimism versus those governed by primal fear, and a demonstration of the dangers of a world that depends on science which is filled with so many people who do not understand it. Some have argued that they find Contact to be "preachy." I don't really see much of a foundation in that assessment of the movie. Just like in real life, the ultimate philosophical answers are left wide open at the end of this movie, leaving it open to many different interpretations. And I think it's refreshing to see a movie that doesn't follow the contemporary pattern of avoiding any serious discussion about morality and philosophy. These are some of the conversations the human race will be forced to have with itself if we want to survive the coming centuries. Recent events since this movie was released and Carl Sagan's death only accentuate the importance of facing this fact. I love this movie. From the beautiful computer-generated opening sequence, through the middle sequences detailing the main character's relentless and passionate quest for scientific knowledge and exploration, to the adventurous surreal climax, I felt that I had a personal connection with almost every aspect of this movie.

The film's not even so bad it's good. I did recently watch "I Love the '80's Strikes Back 1981" on VH-1 & was amused by how awful the stars on the show said it was & the jokes they made about it. The acting is awful by everybody & no one is really likable in the film. Jade's parents are morons. The father tries to be cool & smoke grass & drink alcohol with the kids. He usually ends up making a fool out of himself, dancing around idiotically. Basically, he's only nice when he's under the influence. Jade's mom struggles to sputter out easy sentences & sayings, souding like a child learning Hooked on Phonics & is so sex-starved that she tries to pull an a la Graduate & make it with David. Jade's older brother (James Spader) is not happy with David dating Jade even though he introduced the two! Brooke Shields disturbs me in this film. I always got the feeling that she was exploited in this film (as she was in many others when she was young e.g. Pretty Baby as a 12-year-old prostitute, The Blue Lagoon in which she's way too young to be wearing barely nothing & having sex) as some unstable, young nymphomaniac who acts much younger than 15. This is especially evident in the rape scene that was so nauseating I had to fast forward past it. It's long after David has intentionally set fire to Jade & her family's house & they meet up again a couple of years later & he rapes her, making her demand over & over again to proclaim his love to her & she's crying. Afterwards, she's still on his bed, acting flirty & nonchalant as if nothing happened. What a f@#%*# up scene! After the scene I just mentioned, I kept on fast forwarding through the film to stop the madness & because I really didn't care what would happen. I just wanted it to end. Does it have a point? Maybe it does - that arson will not win back the heart of the girl you love? Or maybe that obsessive love will, most likely & almost always, lead to tragic consequences? But who really cares any way? I suggest you save your money & rent better films about obsessive love like the uncensored version of 9 1/2 Weeks & the 1st version of Romeo & Juliet. ... Read more | |

BASIC PLOT: FILM OPINIONS: OVERALL:
Booger is now a faded, watered-down-for-network-TV shell of his former slobby self here, as he prepares to get married to the daughter of a wealthy socialite. As expected, the father doesn't approve of the imminent marriage of his little girl to Sandusky, Ohio's raunchiest belch-monger, and hatches a plan to keep it from happening. Um, the wedding, that is. Fortunately, Booger's geeky friends come to the rescue and help bring about a happy ending, complete with a strip-tease by Lamar and the underhanded scheming of the big man's son-in-law (married to the bride-to-be's sister)... Also starring here is the ever-optimistic Lewis Skolnick, once again played by Robert Carradine. Apparently, Mr. Carradine really needed the work, as he also executive-produced this fiasco. A few other recurring characters played by out-of-work actors desperate for a paycheck include Lamar (Larry B. Scott), Takashi (Brian Tochi), Ogre (Donald Gibb), and... former Adams College QB Stan Gable (Ted McGinley)?! Sheesh, I guess it wasn't bad enough that McGinley's famous as the harbinger of doom for just about every TV show he's starred or appeared in, now he's gotta do the same thing for the ROTN franchise... In conclusion: if you do not wish to have your fond memories of the first two ROTN flicks sullied by this pathetic waste of celluloid, just pass it by and pretend it was never made (which is what I do, by the way). But if you can't resist your curiosity, then you'd best get a trip to the local Blockbuster in order. Just remember, I Gave you fair warning... 'Late

Both of these statements have a lot of merit, but I think I'm going to go with my second opinion. Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is quite enjoyable while it's playing. The scenes are set up well, the one-liners are mostly funny ("I said celebrate, not fornicate!"), and Streisand and O'Neal give off a strong sexual charge between them onscreen. It may not be meaningful, or even original, but THE MAIN EVENT is a pretty good timewaster. About the DVD: The picture quality is great, and the mono sound is fine as well. It's great to have the original trailer and the 19-minute television special, titled GETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE MAIN EVENT, preserved on disc, although Streisand's brief audio commentary is slightly disappointing.

The film's title is ironic. 'First Night' refer's to a medieval ruler's 'first night' rights -- the right to first bed a bride on her wedding night. A medieval ruler (King, local nobleman or landholder) had complete power (military and/or economic) over his subjects' lives, including the right to specify who could marry (whom). 'First night' rights were a recurring reminder of that power, a reminder that medieval rulers' subjects accepted with hatred, scorn and fear. Yet the plot of "First Knight" revolves around the relationship between warm dutiful Guinevere and roguish Lancelot, with a disappointed fatherly King Arthur watching. Society has changed. The father literally should be 'first knight' to his wife and children, but easy separation and divorce breaks family relationships. The film "First Knight" reinterprets medieval rulers' historical []rights as Sean Connery's noble fatherly ruling style, a style that itself is becoming increasingly rare. In the Twenty-First Century a separated/divorced father's role often is limited to paying bills, a role carrying nobility but little authority.

Meyer is Nick Schaffer, a nice young guy who has just returned from his best friend's bachelor party and, of course, is asked when he will settle down himself. But good-hearted Nick, while not exactly a wild child, still isn't ready. However, while passing through a Las Vegas casino and finally tempted to put a quarter in a slot machine, he becomes embroiled in the adventure of his lifetime, as casino-owner/billionaire-boys-club organizer John P. Sinclair (Cleese) fixes certain slots to pay out six special tokens. These tokens have a room number printed on them, beckoning Schaffer, along with the NFL's worst referee (Gooding, Jr.), a harried mother (Goldberg) and her on-the-go-biz-minded daughter (Lanai Chapman), two party-dude brothers (Seth Green and newcomer Vince Vieluf), and a bumbling Italian funnyman (Atkinson, doing his best Roberto Benigni impression). Of course, these largely dimwitted characters are the unwitting participants in Sinclair's latest game to amuse himself and his billionaire buddies. The goal: find $2 million locked in a train station safe 563 miles away in Silver City, New Mexico---winner takes all, naturally! Just as with all of the previous treatments of the same basic theme, the point of watching is not to see who wins, but to see what incredibly incredulous situations these greedy, wacky characters can get themselves into. See hapless referee Cuba Gooding, Jr. being even more hapless behind the wheel of a touring bus--of "I Love Lucy" conventioneers. See hapless dad Jon Lovitz who essentially kidnaps his entire family to join him on the ride, and ends up taking them on a tour of the "Barbie Museum" (which sets up this film's funniest series of gags, if not most controversial). See hapless Rowan Atkinson making mincemeat of the English language through his character's overly engaging Italian accent--and falling asleep at the least opportune times as he happens to be narcoleptic. Breckin Meyer essentially plays the straight man to everyone else's bunch of rodeo clowns, but his character is no less the [end] of the film's joke, as he gets into trouble with his too-trusting nature. I will not give away any of the film's surprisingly funny scenes. I will simply say that although many of its characters are rather stupid, the movie itself is not. I laughed at the vast majority of jokes. So this isn't AIRPLANE or THE NAKED GUN--it isn't trying to be! It is, however, funny and fast-paced. Besides, you just can't hate a film that gives us cameos by wonderful stage veteran Kathy Bates and feminist attorney Gloria Allred! RECOMMENDED
My favorites are the Jon Lovitz and Kathy Najimy who play a husband and wife with 2 kids. I is one of the funniest we have ever seen. Their kids wanting to visit the "Barbie" museum which turns out for this Jewish couple to be the Klaus Barbie of Hitler fame museum and results in a quick get away in a car once owned by Hitler with swastika flags and all. You will laugh so dang hard. I laugh just thinking about their performances. Then the whole Kathy Bates ... The Squirrel Lady and Whoopu Goldberg and the whole break the land speed record segment is a riot. Cuba Gooding Jr. ... Owen Templeton and the whole bus load of Lucys look alikes headed for a Lucy convention will have you laughing so hard. There is also a naughty but not vulgar scene with the two young guys, (one has piercing) and the two girls in the car where the one girl Tristin Leffler (Pierced Girl) shows the one guy driving that she has more piercings than him and he drives the car off the road and into a hilarious segment that will have the Nascar and trucker fans busting a gutt. The nice thing is the ending .... not at all what one expects.

When Highlander arrived on TV, it started out with a good concept (taken from the first film, primarily), a real hero (Duncan - played with great self-assurance by Adrian Paul), but some bumps in the road that gave it a TV feel. This is evident in the first season, as the episodes are hit and miss, and the show wasn't operating on all cylinders until near the end of the season. In the 2nd year, Highlander hit full stride, and with each successive episode, the series became more compelling. Many episodes from that year are excellent. The full Highlander team had to have known they had a winner, and the creative energy is high. These were the shows that solidified the fan base the show would ultimately have. The 3rd season picked up right where the second took off, and by now Highlander was thriving, if in relative obscurity. By now Adrian Paul WAS Duncan MacLeod - The Highlander. The show had a level of synchronicity and often intensity, that made the very most of the concept. The actors (again, espeically Paul) the writers, and entire crew were obviously very inspired, as they turned out one excellent episode after another. Many of them masterfully interweaved. The 4th season kept the pattern going. And the Highlander team continued with exploring characters, and changes. While the concept was limited (who will Duncan meet from his past this week?), as such, we were introduced to the "dark side" of Duncan Macleod. If because of what the cast and crew had working together - the show continued on putting out either excellent, or good shows. While this turn was interesting, the somewhat dark side didn't always click with fans who saw Duncan as a role model and hero. The 5th season found the writers trying to vary the previous season's problems. With many espisodes Duncan changing (often not using the sword at all), and sometimes mystical elements involved (which turned some fans off). But the professionalism continued. By the 6th season, the show was hit and miss, and it seemed at times like it was soon to reach the end (which it did). The final episide was somewhat sentimental, but at the same time, fittingly obscure. Highlander - Raven continued with the charming character of Amanda. But without Paul, the series didn't have the same backbone, and ultimately waned. Adrian Paul would later reprise the Duncan MacLeod role in the film Highlander: Endgame, which is the best sequel as the films go (and on par with many TV episodes), but alas, the film did not fair well at the box office, as the previous sequels (2, and 3) were so bad, the mainstream stayed away.
Homeland is the first episode that was also directed by Adrian Paul and is set amongst the magnificent scenery of the Highlands of Scotland and shows what a great talent Adrian has not only as an actor but as a director. Methos is also featured in several episodes along with Joe Dawson, with Amanda also making an appearence there is something for everyone. Still, it's nice to see a movie where Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer manage to move away from type-casting and prove that they can both act. Also impressive is the fact that director Zemeckis filmed this whilst on a hiatus from his other film 'Castaway'. Unfortunately though, it drags a lot at the start. After things hot up a little you'll be at the edge of your seat but for a long while it's a little dull. Of course, this was passed off as being adult and a great tension-builder and no-one dared say anything. It was just kep quiet about whilst everyone raved about the ending. If you're not accustomed to the genre then this is probably a really good start to ghost movies. But there are far better ones out there and this is little more than ordinary. In fact, it is only really a fantastic turn by Pfeiffer that makes it anything special. Watch out throughout the movie for key points that are heavily earmarked as future plot elements - what's with the mysterious (and conveniently misty) lake? the old photos? and the seemingly insignificant fact that you can't get mobile phone reception on the deserted bridge? Highly entertaining in parts, very dull in others.

To best describe this film to the uninitiated would probably require a comparison with "L.A. Confidential" (with PG-friendly/cartoon violence) and a Looney Tunes movie. It is fun, boisterous and entertaining with memorable performances by Bob Hoskins (as Eddie Valiant), Christopher Lloyd (as Judge Doom), Roger Rabbit (as himself) and that sultry scene-stealer Jessica Rabbit (as herself and voiced by Kathleen Turner). A veritable who's who in animation, this film features cameos by Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Daffy Duck, Goofy and Betty Boop, to name a few. The VISTA SERIES is especially impressive given the many, many special features that are included. The packaging alone - with a case that looks like a detective's portfolio/folder - is a treat. Add to that the following: 1) Audio commentary by the filmmakers led by director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) The film itself is well worth the price of the DVD. Add to that the wealth of special features and this promises to be one of the best DVDs of the year. Animation, action/adventure and comedy fans will find this a special treat and I highly recommend this family-friendly (PG) film to everyone!
The story takes place in 1947 and it all begins with the lovable goofball Roger Rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer) co-starring with the cute but not-so-innocent Baby Herman (offstage, Herman is a whiney, scowling cigar smoking midget) in What's Cookin'. It's not long before Roger is under investigation by hapless no-nonsense detective Eddie Valiant (Hoskins). Marvin Acme (Stubby Kaye), owner of Toontown, has been murdered. Judge Doom (Back to the Future and Taxi's Christopher Lloyd) and his pack of scheming weasels suspect Roger is the culprit, particularly after Acme plays a game of patty-cake with Roger's sultry wife, Jessica (Kathleen Turner). Jessica's defense: "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way!" Roger, Jessica and Valiant do their best to prove Roger's innocence and save the fate of Toontown. Benny the wisecrackin' Cab is there to help Valiant get to the bottom of it all. Cameos include Daffy and Donald Duck, Bugs Bunny (voiced by the late Mel Blanc), Yosemite Sam, Mickey Mouse, Tweety, Droopy Dog, Betty Boop (with the original voice of Mae Questel) and many others. The musical score is composed by Alan Silvestri (Forrest Gump, Lilo and Stitch). Now for the extras. There is a spoken commentary as well as a "pop-up video" style commentary on the picture, outtakes including the "pig head" sequence, information on before/after animation, a DVD game Trouble in Toontown, options of widescreen and fullscreen, and (if you're bi-lingual) dubbed in versions in French and Spanish. Finally, it includes 3 Roger Rabbit short films, including Tummy Trouble (where Baby Herman swallows everything), Rollercoaster Rabbit (where Roger babysits Herman in an amusement park; my favourite of the 3) and Trail Mix-Up (where Roger takes Herman camping around Yellowstone Park; watch for Jessica's cameos in all of these!). Give yourself a week or 2 to enjoy the movie and all the extras! Enjoy the ride and leave the driving to Benny, your faithful tourgide!
I was 10 when "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" came out and it is just as much fun to watch now, maybe funnier because I missed some of the humor back then. Roger's a riot and his wife, Jessica Rabbit ("I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way"), is truly a toon vixen. Bob Hoskin's Eddie Valiant is sent to find out the truth when the owner of Toon Town is murdered after playing patty-cake (literally) with Jessica. Everyone assumes a jealous Roger did it and that washed-up detective Eddie can't hack it anymore. There is lots of subtle humor, like when Eddie asks for a scotch on the rocks in a 'toon bar and instead of ice he gets actual rocks. Eddie seriously hates Toon Town because his brother had a piano dropped on his head, but he eventually becomes pals with Roger, overcomes his hatred of Toon Town and clears Roger's name. Christopher Lloyd's Judge Doom is perfectly creepy and his squad of weasels are funny as they try to stop Eddie and Roger from discovering the truth. The interaction between the live actors and the toons is seamless, probably why the movie won four Oscars. The behind the scenes features and commentaries are great, the entire 2-disc set is incredibly well-thought out and packaged, making it a must-have for the fan.
Here is the story. Someone has killed Marvin Acme, owner of ToonTown and Roger takes the heat for it. Of course he was framed but by who and why? Roger seeks the help of Eddie Valiant, a once prominant detective that fell into hard times after his brother was killed by a toon. Thus was his reluctance to help Roger since he was a toon. But he does help Roger, and he must get to the bottom of the mystery before Judge Doom finds and kills Roger by "dipping him". Eddie feels sorry for the rabbit so he investigates before it is too late, and along the way he discovers more and more about why Acme was killed and that ToonTown itself is in danger. Oh yeah, and Roger was the perfect one to frame because his wife Jessica Rabbit had been seen meeting with Acme before he died. So most people probably know the plot already, but if not it is highly original and entertaining. This masterpiece couldn't get any better treatment than this, a fully loaded 2 disc set sporting both a family-friendly version on disc 1 and enthusiast version on disc 2. There are so many extras that it will take you a long time to see everything. I admittedly have just begun to see the treasures contained within. But it is obvious that the utmost care was taken to give this the fair dvd treatment it deserved--mission accomplished. This is probably my third favorite movie of all-time, and is without a doubt the best mix of live action and animation. So many great characters appear in this movie such as Bugs and Daffy in the scene where Eddie is falling and they hand him an anvil instead of a 'chute. It is sheer movie magic, and something I could watch all the time and never get tired of seeing it. Director Zimeckis has done a remarkable job with this film, and we also great great performances from Bob Hoskins (Eddie Valiant), Christopher Lloyd (Judge doom) and pretty much everyone else appearing in the film with the addition of the voices of Roger and Jessica who were terrific. To me this is a perfect movie so if you havent seen it before rent it, and if you like it then buy it. If you are a fan then you must own this dvd. It is truly a great thing and this dvd set presents it in all of its glory, the way it should be done.
Do to the fact that 2D animation doesn't seem to generate much interest these days, it's very unlikely that Disney will ever complete Richard Williams' other masterpiece "The Thief and the Cobbler" properly (there is a butchered version out there from Miramax, with very poor animation next to Williams' brilliant sequences). ... | |
