The film begins as Doc Brown transports Marty and his girlfriend to the year 2015 to avert a McFly family disaster. This is certainly a promising start. After some brief exposistion seting up this installment by Doc Brown, Marty ventures into Hill Valley of 2015. This brief adventure is the best sequence in the film, in fact it's the only sequence that bears any similarity to the charm, wit and awe of Part I. I'll admit, I loved the future sequences. Marty from the 1980's, sees flying cars, bizarre people and a "Jaws" sequel. The film soon leaves the future setting and focuses on a sinister alternate timeline which finds Marty and Doc Brown fighting for thier lives and travelling back and forth through time to repair damage to the space time continuum. This is an interesting premise, however it only hides the lack of a solid story. In each era Marty visits, he has no time to absorb the surroundings as he did in the first film, and no relationship to establish and this is due to the frantic fast pace. The film would have been more appealing if the story focused entirely on the future and had Marty help his children. It would have served as a good counterbalance to the first film and be more appealing visually. Overall "Part II" is NOT a bad film. It is filled with inventive plot twists, action and great visual effects. However, knowing how great the first film was, there was no reason for "Part II" to have been so disappointing.
The story of Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) continues in this sequel to 1985's "Back to the Future". The movie picks up right where the first film left off where Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) returns in the DeLorean and tells Marty and Jennifer (Elisabeth Shue, replacing Claudia Wells) that they have to come back with Doc to the future to help their future children. This scene was re-shot for this movie because of Elisabeth Shue taking over the role of Jennifer from Claudia Wells, but it is otherwise the exact same scene that we saw in the ending of "Back to the Future." They are off to 2015 so that Marty can prevent his son, Marty Jr (also Michael J Fox) from getting into some trouble with Griff Tannen (Thomas F Wilson), the grandson of Biff Tannen (also Thomas F. Wilson). While they are in the future, there is a little problem. Marty stops Marty Jr from getting into trouble, but Jennifer is picked up by the police (Doc gave her something so she can just sleep and not get into any trouble) and returned to her future self's home. While Marty and Doc go to get her before she is seen by her family, the old Biff Tannen overhears them talking about time travel and grabs "Gray's Sports Almanac" and goes back to 1955 and gives the almanac to his younger self. Now the young Biff is free to gamble on sporting events knowing the outcome. When Marty and Doc return to 1985, it is an alternate 1985 because the town was changed when Biff won millions gambling. It changed everything in Hill Valley. The rest of the movie is Marty and Doc trying to find out what happened and fixing things back in 1955 (where a different Marty is already there doing what he did in the first "Back to the Future" movie"). This has always been my favorite of the Back to the Future movies. I like how it shows even more how seemingly small events can change what happens in the future. I like watching Marty see himself helping his parents in 1985 (more scenes that had to be re-filmed to get Marty in two places at once). I also appreciate how much attention to detail there was in relation to the first movie as well as what would foreshadow the third movie. The first movie may be considered the best, but this is my favorite.

And it was, certainly, a more innocent era. Heck, this was a New York City where you could loll safely around Central Park until well past midnight--and then maybe hitch a ride with a passing milkman, of all things! Robert Walker and Judy Garland are just about perfect as sweet boy-and-girl next door types who meet cute--as industry types say, or maybe less "cute" than innocent--in the big city, have a whirlwind courtship and race to marry while he is on a 48 hour leave before shipping out to fight in Europe. Their small town naivete (she's been there a year or so, but still has down home ways) is played off against urban gruffness, which is not to be confused with rudeness or indifference. The dyed-in-the-wool New Yorkers they bump up against are more like endearingly gruff uncles or eccentric aunts. And some, like the older couple they meet up with and who pretty much inspire the youngsters to take the marital plunge, are just the salt of the earth. It's hard to come away from this movie without a warm glow. Heck even the (haphazardly) violent drunk played by a young Keenan Wynn is basically a mensch at heart. The story and screenplay stemmed from Paul Gallico's writerly pen, and that may, in part, explain the intelligent dialog and the real sense of humanity with which all the characters and the city itself are imbued. It's a sweet movie, but if you're expecting pure corn syrup, you're in for a surprise. Life-affirming does not necessarily mean reality-denying, and there's a tinge of melancholy throughout the film. Minnelli and Garland proved once again to be a great cinematic team. Help from a very able supporting cast and an intelligent script make for a true classic. I was suprised to see in the notes above that this film was not a huge success upon its relese, but after doing a little informal research of my own, I guess it's true that the film was, relatively speaking little seen. When I speak of it to people who would likely have seen it or at least would know of its existence, I'm surprised at how many scratch their heads and profess never to heard of it. The Amazon critic above cites the fact that the war was already drawing to a close upon the film's release as the main reason for its relative obscurity. The fact that it was not the splashy musical Judy fans may have come to expect may have been another. One nice thing about film, though, 57 years later it's still not too late to catch up.

Duvall's portion, a very small portion, merely relates his This video is no more than an amazing documentary and cultural commentary on the "Milonga" style of Tango; it's past, it's future and simply dazzling performances of now aging non-professional stars of Tango, who are passing the torch of this cultural heritage of Buenos Aires on to another generation. There is an inate sadness in the interviews of the older "Asfalto" Milongueros, the dancers, who see this dance form slipping into disuse, in favor of the European and American style; something that the, the old timers, cannot relate to. Backed by excellent music and stunning exhibitions by "Portenos", this film is a "keeper", to be played over and over again, for it's dance, it's music, it's form and the shear enjoyment of Tango.

As stated the show is excellent, the cast (meaning the original) are great together. The pilot is a little creepy but well worth the watch, and if you can catch the rest of the show currently in reruns on Scifi it gets even better! With the exception of two blondes and a redhead that should have never come about...Watch it, love it and join the rest of us ptl fans!

Frank Drebin (Nielsen) is a bumbling cop who is assinged to look into a plot to kill Queen Elizabeth at the World Series after his fellow oficer and good friend Nordberg (O.J. Simpson - yes, that O.J. Simpson) is nearly killed. The prime suspect is a businessman named Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban). Drebin and his partner Ed Hocken (Georeg Kennedy) will stop at nothing to find out who's behind the crime. That is, if Frank can avoid the charms of the sexy Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley). This is a great film for anyone who loves to laugh. And get the two sequels as well and pray they comeout with a fourth one soon.

In the first one, Mindy discovers she has a major case of represed grief after learning her father is remarrying. Mindy's nightmare flash back scared the living daylights out of me when I was little, and it is still very sobering. The second episode is more typical except at the end when Mork, lamenting celebrity, rattles off a list of famous people who died too young. Although Williams is a master actor, you can tell he slips out of character for a moment when he ads John Lennon with a crack in his voice. Imediately followed by silence (as opposed to the usual gag-signing off, it too is very sobering. Even those too young to remember John Lennon will know the signifigance of the change in plot.

The main focus of this movie is to convert a very good novel to the silver-screen. I think it is done quite well. The movie has a great plot, good sub-plots and plenty intense moments. I agree Frank Peretti over-acted in this film, but hey, the film's good points far outweigh its bad points. The acting was very believable, and the bullying scenes could have been pulled right out of any high school, today. I used to be one of those ignorant bullies myself... Leighton Meester plays Elisha Springfield flawlessly, and she is one of the most beautiful people on the planet. David Keith (playing Nate Springfield) did a great job, after the "drug bust" scene, which I think was a low point in the movie's acting. Andrea Morris was excellent in her role as the tormented Crystal Sparks. She really added a lot to this movie. I actually felt sad for her character during the movie. Jake Richardson was good as Ian Snyder. All and all, I think this movie was way better than Arachnophobia, and I think it is not a movie that tries to push Jesus on anyone. I believe anti-Christians find that a threat in any action a believer takes; even if they ask you to pass the salt... Buy the movie, it's good! God Bless. :-) www.therunninggirl.com
The Christian message isn't overt. As a matter of fact, this couldn't really be considered a "Christian movie". Yes, one of the main characters prays during a crisis, but that's what most Christians do. There is no "Romans Road to Christ" laid out in the film, and it shouldn't offend anyone who's not a Christian. The special effects are good, especially for the budget they had to work with. All in all, this is a movie I'm glad I watched, but I doubt I watch it again any time soon. I look forward to another Frank Peretti film in the future, but I hope it's "The Oath" or "This Present Darkness", either of which would be incredible. Don't judge Frank's works by this movie. Read his books instead.

Both of these statements have a lot of merit, but I think I'm going to go with my second opinion. Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is quite enjoyable while it's playing. The scenes are set up well, the one-liners are mostly funny ("I said celebrate, not fornicate!"), and Streisand and O'Neal give off a strong sexual charge between them onscreen. It may not be meaningful, or even original, but THE MAIN EVENT is a pretty good timewaster. About the DVD: The picture quality is great, and the mono sound is fine as well. It's great to have the original trailer and the 19-minute television special, titled GETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE MAIN EVENT, preserved on disc, although Streisand's brief audio commentary is slightly disappointing.

Interspersed between the musical shots are slice-of-life vignettes where we get to hear our hero trading philosophy and folksy wisdom, along with some very ribald stories, with his compadres. We also get to look at some of his colorful, "realist" (artist's own description) paintings of African-American life. But the real treat for me was a treasure he has kept locked up since he created it. It's a "prostitute's bible" with folktales, how-to guides, anecdotes (personal and otherwise), cut-out magazine photos, and some charmingly explicit and colorful drawings. I would pay at least $100 for a copy of it. When asked why he keeps it locked away, he replies that he does so to avoid "the man" keeping him locked away. It's unfortunate that this video hasn't been released on DVD, because in effect, its obscurity does keep Louie Bluie locked away. ... Read more | |

A WORD OF WARNING. Some reviewers note that the film received an X rating in the early 1970s when X ratings were much more freely given than they are today. That is true; after all, even MIDNIGHT COWBOY was rated X, if you can imagine it. Even so, there is considerable nudity and simulated sex in FLESH GORDON, and during one or two of the crowd scenes it seems obvious that at least one of the couples is well gone into X territory. While I wouldn't describe FLESH GORDON as pornography, it remains fairly raw stuff, and you may want to keep that in mind.
