Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with this inventive, perhaps too clever sequel to the popular 1985 comedy about a high school kid (Michael J. Fox) who travels into the past and has to bring his parents together (or lose his own existence). Director Robert Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication to this follow-up, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Fox's character watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Inventive but uncharming sequel
"Back to the Future Part II" is an inventive 2nd adventure of Marty McFly and Doc Brown aboard their suped up Delorean, it is not however a great movie like the first film was. Part II retains none of the charm, warmth or wonder of the first film. Instead it's an effects filled roller coaster ride of confusing time paradoxes and visual effects.

The film begins as Doc Brown transports Marty and his girlfriend to the year 2015 to avert a McFly family disaster. This is certainly a promising start. After some brief exposistion seting up this installment by Doc Brown, Marty ventures into Hill Valley of 2015. This brief adventure is the best sequence in the film, in fact it's the only sequence that bears any similarity to the charm, wit and awe of Part I. I'll admit, I loved the future sequences. Marty from the 1980's, sees flying cars, bizarre people and a "Jaws" sequel.

The film soon leaves the future setting and focuses on a sinister alternate timeline which finds Marty and Doc Brown fighting for thier lives and travelling back and forth through time to repair damage to the space time continuum. This is an interesting premise, however it only hides the lack of a solid story. In each era Marty visits, he has no time to absorb the surroundings as he did in the first film, and no relationship to establish and this is due to the frantic fast pace.

The film would have been more appealing if the story focused entirely on the future and had Marty help his children. It would have served as a good counterbalance to the first film and be more appealing visually.

Overall "Part II" is NOT a bad film. It is filled with inventive plot twists, action and great visual effects. However, knowing how great the first film was, there was no reason for "Part II" to have been so disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the 3
I am a big fan of the Back to the Future series, and I think the second one is the best. This one starts out where Marty McFly has recently returned from the 50's and is about to start relaxing when..................Doc Brown comes in and tells Marty he has to go to the future with him to save one of his future kids. While in the futur, Marty takes the place of his son, who looks like him, and tell's Biff's grandson he does not want to particapate in whatever get Marty's son in trouble. After that is settled Marty buys a sports almanac. He plans to go back to the 80's and win money on predictions (or already-known-answers) from the book. But, Biff steals the book, steals the time machine, goes to the 50's, gives young Biff the book, and soon Biff becomes powerful, rich, and married to Marty's mother. So now Marty has to go back to the 50's, get the book back, and safely return to the 80's without screwing anything up. How? Watch this GREAT movie to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE EVER!
I am a real sci-fi geek, but this movie was superb! It's a true sequel to Bttf Part 1 and I personally think it's the best movie EVER! It's my absolute favorite! This is a must-see!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of the trilogy
A film by Robert Zemeckis

The story of Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) continues in this sequel to 1985's "Back to the Future". The movie picks up right where the first film left off where Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) returns in the DeLorean and tells Marty and Jennifer (Elisabeth Shue, replacing Claudia Wells) that they have to come back with Doc to the future to help their future children. This scene was re-shot for this movie because of Elisabeth Shue taking over the role of Jennifer from Claudia Wells, but it is otherwise the exact same scene that we saw in the ending of "Back to the Future."

They are off to 2015 so that Marty can prevent his son, Marty Jr (also Michael J Fox) from getting into some trouble with Griff Tannen (Thomas F Wilson), the grandson of Biff Tannen (also Thomas F. Wilson). While they are in the future, there is a little problem. Marty stops Marty Jr from getting into trouble, but Jennifer is picked up by the police (Doc gave her something so she can just sleep and not get into any trouble) and returned to her future self's home. While Marty and Doc go to get her before she is seen by her family, the old Biff Tannen overhears them talking about time travel and grabs "Gray's Sports Almanac" and goes back to 1955 and gives the almanac to his younger self. Now the young Biff is free to gamble on sporting events knowing the outcome. When Marty and Doc return to 1985, it is an alternate 1985 because the town was changed when Biff won millions gambling. It changed everything in Hill Valley. The rest of the movie is Marty and Doc trying to find out what happened and fixing things back in 1955 (where a different Marty is already there doing what he did in the first "Back to the Future" movie").

This has always been my favorite of the Back to the Future movies. I like how it shows even more how seemingly small events can change what happens in the future. I like watching Marty see himself helping his parents in 1985 (more scenes that had to be re-filmed to get Marty in two places at once). I also appreciate how much attention to detail there was in relation to the first movie as well as what would foreshadow the third movie. The first movie may be considered the best, but this is my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE!!!!!
I am a HUGE fan of the Back to the Future triliogy!! If i had to recmmend any of the 3 to own it would be this one, # 2!!!! It is the best of both worlds, going from present to past and future!!! Sometimes simplicity can be heartbreaking. So it is with The Clock, a wonderfully simple love story that stands as one of the gems of the MGM golden years. It should be noted right off that this 1945 film is not a musical, despite a talent roster led by the maestro of MGM musicals, producer Arthur Freed. Rather, it's a straight, black and white romance about a soldier (Robert Walker) with a two-day pass in unfamiliar, overwhelming New York City. He meets an office worker (Judy Garland), and in the glow of the city and each other, they fall in love. Underlying the sweetness of the romance is the time limit of the soldier's leave, after which he will be sent overseas; the clock brings an urgency to the action, especially after the lovers lose each other in the crush of a subway. Veteran character actor James Gleason provides lovely support, as does his real-life wife, Lucile. Director Vincente Minnelli brought his designer's eye to the film, turning (by his own avowed intention) New York City itself into the third main character in the drama. It's not difficult to guess the reason for the film's strong emotional tug, or for Judy Garland's radiance; Minnelli had fallen in love with Garland during the making of Meet Me in St. Louis a year earlier, and they would marry after filming The Clock. She was never lovelier than in these two pictures. --Robert Horton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clock-charming picture
In this indescribably brilliant masterwork by Vincente Minnelli, he uses his soon-to-be- wife Judy Garland and Robert Walker in a poignant, charming drama. Judy is charming and incredibly wonderful in this dramatic role (she doesn't sing a note, but never mind) as a young woman in New York City who befriends a handsome soldier on 48-hour leave (perfectly naively played by Robert Walker). In only a matter of hours, the romance has fully blossomed. With the aid of a jovial milkman, they decide to marry. Only Judy Garland could have brought such poignancy to this movie, this beautiful movie that can never be forgotten. A true Garland treasure, perhaps the finest wartime love story ever made!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Clock Should Go Digital
New York's well known PBS station, Channel 13, ran this movie the weekend before September 11, 2002. That may have been fortuitous, or there just may be real a programming whiz there. Vincente Minnelli's THE CLOCK is just about as perfect a cinematic valentine to New York City as you're going to get. In many ways this 1945 movie--filmed during another critical period of U.S. and world history--relates perfectly to our experience today. Even people who don't "heart symbol NY" (not a camp I fall into, by the way, but I know there are those megalopophobics out there) will shed a tear or two for our lost innocence.

And it was, certainly, a more innocent era. Heck, this was a New York City where you could loll safely around Central Park until well past midnight--and then maybe hitch a ride with a passing milkman, of all things!

Robert Walker and Judy Garland are just about perfect as sweet boy-and-girl next door types who meet cute--as industry types say, or maybe less "cute" than innocent--in the big city, have a whirlwind courtship and race to marry while he is on a 48 hour leave before shipping out to fight in Europe. Their small town naivete (she's been there a year or so, but still has down home ways) is played off against urban gruffness, which is not to be confused with rudeness or indifference. The dyed-in-the-wool New Yorkers they bump up against are more like endearingly gruff uncles or eccentric aunts.

And some, like the older couple they meet up with and who pretty much inspire the youngsters to take the marital plunge, are just the salt of the earth. It's hard to come away from this movie without a warm glow. Heck even the (haphazardly) violent drunk played by a young Keenan Wynn is basically a mensch at heart.

The story and screenplay stemmed from Paul Gallico's writerly pen, and that may, in part, explain the intelligent dialog and the real sense of humanity with which all the characters and the city itself are imbued. It's a sweet movie, but if you're expecting pure corn syrup, you're in for a surprise. Life-affirming does not necessarily mean reality-denying, and there's a tinge of melancholy throughout the film. Minnelli and Garland proved once again to be a great cinematic team. Help from a very able supporting cast and an intelligent script make for a true classic.

I was suprised to see in the notes above that this film was not a huge success upon its relese, but after doing a little informal research of my own, I guess it's true that the film was, relatively speaking little seen. When I speak of it to people who would likely have seen it or at least would know of its existence, I'm surprised at how many scratch their heads and profess never to heard of it. The Amazon critic above cites the fact that the war was already drawing to a close upon the film's release as the main reason for its relative obscurity. The fact that it was not the splashy musical Judy fans may have come to expect may have been another. One nice thing about film, though, 57 years later it's still not too late to catch up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Judy Garland at her most beautiful, excellent direction by Vincente minelli, a must-see frogotten classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars The brio of romance.
Turner Classic Movies just ran it, and it is, in a word, breathtaking. What I especially love is the duality of Robert Walker and Judy Garland: they are both simple, lonely souls who literally stumble over each other one day, then get repeatedly teamed up in a series of seemingly innocent adventures (they ride a double decker bus; she shows him Central Park; he shows her an art museum)- each time attempting to part company but continuing to draw towards each other. When you analyze it, their courtship is almost fantastic, but the time of the film's 1945 release more than allows for the magic of budding romance. It is not really a sugary film; all the while the two leads communicate, you can see the improbability of their situation on their faces. When a milkman rescues them from being stranded at the end of a long date- and they wind up delivering his milk route- they burst out laughing at their situation. It makes a later scene of a subway separation particularly heartbreaking, and its later reunion at a train depot breathtaking (I guarantee tears in your eyes)- and that's sort of what the movie's all about. In retrospect, it's a bit ironic to watch the young sweetness of Walker and Garland- two stars who had tragic, frequently unhappy existences. Their chemistry here as strangers who become friends who fall in love is mesmerizing. Ms. Garland does not sing, but her dark, exquisite eyes are music to the camera lens. Several bios have cited this film and MEET ME IN ST LOUIS as the two films which really captured a beautiful Judy Garland, and I suspect that has something to do with the elegant taste and artistry of the director- who was in love with (and would soon marry) his star. Grab immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Classic For the Non Musicals Fan!
For anyone who loves 40's films but not thrilled with Musicals. I think this is a film you'd enjoy. The Stars Robert Walker (strangers on a train) as soldier on a 48 hour leave and Judy Garland (the Wizard of oz) as a NY secretary that Walker falls in love with.
This is a sensual, Romantic and Dramatic film. Not something that Judy Garland was known for. Upon her request to do a Non singing film her husband Vincente Minnelli directed the song bird in her fist non singing film. As the story unfolds The two strangers Alice and Joe meet, fall in love and Marry in 48 hours, Yes 48 Hours, but they go through quite a bit in the during war romance. They meet under The Clock at 7 for a date and in that same night walk through Central park and share a passionate Kiss, then they decide to get married, But while they are in Grand Central station they accidently lose eachother and spend what time (Joe) has left before his leave is up. When they finally see eachother again. It is beautiful. You can really feel the steaminess of the story ...
This is a heartfelt war time romance for anyone who's ever been in love. See Judy Garland in a wonderful dramatic film which proves she could hold her own as a powerful actress. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jorge Zanada's documentary on the Argentinian Tango
"Tango: Our Dance" refers to the people of Buenos Aires for whom the Tango is much more than a dance. It is a ritual imbued with great sensuality and style. Director Jorge Zanada is not offering up an extended music video, because this documentary looks at how the Tango fits uniquely into the culture of Argentina focusing on the elements of passion and machismo contained within the dance. Robert Duvall makes a "special appearance" in this film which is in English with Spanish subtitles. "Tango Bayle nuestro" won the Golden Precolumbian Circle Best Documentary Award at the 1989 Bogota Film Festival. Ultimately, this film is more about culture than it is about dance per se.

4-0 out of 5 stars docu with real tango
Finaly a documentry with real danced Argentine tango with normal people, realy improvising on the music. Not everything I like in this video, there is a part with Ballroom tango and a choreographed dance (orgenised by an american program for latino's) that misses the point, but I like realy the end, a ballet , but it is beatifully danced in real Tango stile, that means heavy, down to the ground.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Tango
Somewhat overwrought in its politics, but this film does put tango in its cultural context. This film shows ordinary people dancing the tango and talking about the dance they love. It contrast the real tango in Buenos Aires and the acrobatic tango you see in shows. This film is insightful and passionate and beautiful and sad, much like the tango itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Docu-commentary on "real" Milonga style Tango.
I was bemused by another review of this film which asserted "an inebriated Robert Duvall portrays an aging gigelo, pandering to old ladies."

Duvall's portion, a very small portion, merely relates his reasons for visiting Argentina, to learn Tango at it's cradle of inception. The interview is obviously in a hotel room, where he speaks compactly about his love and interest in Tango. He "plays" no part. He does not dance.

This video is no more than an amazing documentary and cultural commentary on the "Milonga" style of Tango; it's past, it's future and simply dazzling performances of now aging non-professional stars of Tango, who are passing the torch of this cultural heritage of Buenos Aires on to another generation. There is an inate sadness in the interviews of the older "Asfalto" Milongueros, the dancers, who see this dance form slipping into disuse, in favor of the European and American style; something that the, the old timers, cannot relate to. Backed by excellent music and stunning exhibitions by "Portenos", this film is a "keeper", to be played over and over again, for it's dance, it's music, it's form and the shear enjoyment of Tango.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Duvall's greatest films.
As a tango instructor at an Arthur Murray studio in East Islip, New Jersey, Duvall commands the viewer's attention with his cynical, jaded, bored, and slightly inebriated portrayal. Ripping off infatuated elderly ladies who only want to be young again so they can dance with him, Duvall's conscience never begins to get the better of him. Then a new instructor is hired - a younger, more attractive Mason Williams. Watch the fireworks and fancy footwork as these two gigolos compete ruthlessly for the attentions of their elderly clientele. You must see this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Derek de Lint...Need I say more??...
But I WILL! Poltergeist; The Legacy is a show all on its own, no it has nothing to do with the Poltergeist movies starring Heather O'Rouke and Jo Beth Williams. PTL as reffered to by the fans stars Dutch actor Derek de Lint as Derek Rayne, Martin Cummins as Nick Boyle, Robbi Chong as Alex Moreau, Patrick Fitzgerald as Phillip Callahan, Helen Shaver as Rachel Corrigan, and Alexandra Purvis as Kat Corrigan. It also had recurring stars Daniel J. Travant(Hill Street Blues)as William Sloan and Kristin Lehman as Kristin Adams. And Jordan Bayne as Julia Walker whose unfortunate demise in the first episode leads to the incorporation of Rachel Corrigan.

As stated the show is excellent, the cast (meaning the original) are great together. The pilot is a little creepy but well worth the watch, and if you can catch the rest of the show currently in reruns on Scifi it gets even better! With the exception of two blondes and a redhead that should have never come about...Watch it, love it and join the rest of us ptl fans!

3-0 out of 5 stars first REaL horror film
i really wanted to see a horror film that actually looked good besides attack of the killer tomatoes (yuck). So i rented this with my two old friends (icky mon and erin) and it was boring. first, erin wouldnt shut up and monica kept thinking she knew so much about it. i really didnt get the story cuz it was kinda boring. Well it had this box........

5-0 out of 5 stars A must see!!
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. After renting it I actually ordered it through my locate Blockbuster, it cost me $75.00 at the time but it was totally worth it. The T.V. series that followed was the best four years of television. I taped the entire series and to this day its the only thing I watch with any regularity. I would recommend anything with Derek de Lint in it as he is a fantasic actor with a very wide range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poltergeist is the best show ever!
Poltergeist the legacy has nothing to do with those dumb poltergeistmovies. It's a terific show all on it's own. There are about 100+websites created by the fans alone. There are close to a million fanfics posted online. The cast has great chemistry and the special effects are TERRIFIC! There's curently a petition at Helen's site to bring the show back. :) "Since the begining of time, mankind has existed between the world of light and the world of darkness"

3-0 out of 5 stars A Movie for Demon Lovers
The cast was good. The plot was good. The character interaction was good. They didn't go overboard in the gore and special effects like most of these type of movies do. Poltergeist: The Legacy is about a team of paranormal experts who are desperate to find the last of the five druidic boxes before it gets into the wrong hands. If that were to happen, then God's fallen angels would be set loose upon the world. There is some gore, some violence and language. So, it is not a movie for children to watch. But, I think fans of the demonic genre will enjoy this fast-paced movie. ... Read more

David Zucker--of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker creative troika behind Airplane! and television's Police Squad!--directed this 1988 feature film based on the latter show. Leslie Nielsen returns to his old TV role of Lt. Frank Drebin, the deadpan idiot with a detective's badge. The reinvention of the failed series as a theatrical feature seems to have inspired everyone involved to make a pretty funny movie, and the jokes gather a momentum that lasts until the final act. Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is being invaded by Drebin during routine questioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman. There's a hilarious bit when Drebin--wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom--can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand). Yes, that's O.J. Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the files of when comedy was actually funny
Those who know me know that I don't often go to comedies that have been made since the Austin Powers era. The reason is that there has been a line that has been crossed in recent years that makes that majority of these films unfunny to me. While Austin Powers had Dr. Evil to save it from over all lameness most comedies these days are too reliant on riskaye sex jokes and over the top toilet humor that works in South Park and Nintendo's "Conker's Bad Fur Day" but nothing else. The Naked Gun is based on the short-lived but absolutely hilarious "Police Squad" TV series starring Leslie Neilson as Lt. Frank Drebbon. The show and films classic "who dun its" from the 40s and 50s with over the top classy humor, and a lot of well timed puns and gags. Timing is what makes not only this movie, but also its sequels do funny. The timing for everything is dead on, plus it's a Zucker film, and the Zuckers are almost up there with Mel Brooks. They know how to do comedy right. However the weakness of this film is in its time sensitive gags. A lot of the events in this movie are poking fun of events that were occurring at the time the movies were made. People who were not around in, or do not remember the early nineties may not get a lot of the gags. Even so there is still enough material that is not time sensitive for the film to be funny over all. Even a guest appearance by Weird Al Yankovic.
The special features are lacking, however. Part of what makes DVDs so fun is when you get a jam-packed DVD that goes in depth into the making of the movie. It is when you have those kinds of documentaries that the movie becomes more than a movie; it becomes a living piece of history. Considering that so many of the jokes are so era sensitive these making of featurettes that this DVD lacked could have been beneficial to those who don't know that backdrops to which so many of these jokes are built.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank Drebin from Police Squad hits the Big Screen
Yes, "The Naked Gun" is a funny movie, a fitting heir to "Airplane" in the genre of "Kitchen Sink" comedy where you had better pay attention to everything that is going on in the background and read all of the final credits or you will be missing out on the fun. But Leslie Nielsen's totally dead-panned performance as Lt. Frank Drebin in the original "Police Squad" TV series worked better than than the more hammy approach used in the films. Still, watching Priscilla Presley, Nancy Marchand and Ricardo Montalban deal straight up with all the wackiness redeems many things. Even if you never saw "Police Squad" (with Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln), you will laugh parts of your anatomy off during "The Naked Gun." I wonder if Queen Elizabeth ever watched this movie? Too bad it is hard not to wince every time you see that guy playing Nordberg. Final Trivia Note: the German version of "The Naked Gun" runs four minutes shorter. See if you can guess what the fun loving Germans found so offensive they cut (No, I do not have any idea, but I am curious).

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy
Based on the failed tv series "Police Squad", 1988's "The Naked Gun" was a smash comedy that gave new life to Leslie Nielsen's career (he had previously been reduced to dramatic roles) as well as escued the team of Jerry and David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, who hadn't had a hit since 1980's equally hysterical "Airplane" (which also starred Nielsen).

Frank Drebin (Nielsen) is a bumbling cop who is assinged to look into a plot to kill Queen Elizabeth at the World Series after his fellow oficer and good friend Nordberg (O.J. Simpson - yes, that O.J. Simpson) is nearly killed. The prime suspect is a businessman named Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban). Drebin and his partner Ed Hocken (Georeg Kennedy) will stop at nothing to find out who's behind the crime. That is, if Frank can avoid the charms of the sexy Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley).

This is a great film for anyone who loves to laugh. And get the two sequels as well and pray they comeout with a fourth one soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars This carn't be overlooked
Very funny movie if you haven't seen it its clear your behind in comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
When asked what my favorite movie of all time, I always instinctively utter "The Naked Gun." While not everyone really appreciates this movie, unless you're into goffball comedies, this has to be one of the funniest movies ever. Not sure what else can be said about it. Puns, punchlines, side gags, are all brilliant. I laugh out loud every time I watch it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Zefirelli and Domingo!
Franco Zefirelli makes here an astonishing film adaptation of Leocavallo`s famed opera. Though using scenarios sometimes, the settings are convincing and give another dimension to what was to be carried out in an opera stage. The production surely adds to the musical quality. In relation to this, Domingo is superb. Pagliacci is, no doubt, one of his best roles and he is in a great form. More than this, this record shows us that Domingo can be an extraordinarily convincing actor for an opera singer. The other singers are great as well and were it not because of the great presentation by Domingo, they surely could be de highlights of the cast. The production is really a must for any opera lover, whith great music quality crowned by great scenes. ... Read more

Movies about the movies are a particularly rich vein, especially in comedies. No one understands just how ridiculous Hollywood is like the people who work there. This film is an affectionate behind-the-scenes story about a bumpkin (Jeff Bridges) who moves to Hollywood in the 1930s with visions of a career penning the kind of Westerns he loves to watch, especially the ones starring his favorite Western star (Andy Griffith). Instead, through a series of mishaps, he becomes an actor himself--and a pretty bad one at that--starring in B Westerns (and becoming a rival to Griffith, who turns out to be a particularly nasty piece of work, in a bit of casting against type). Alan Arkin and Blythe Danner join in the fun in this good-natured and amusing spoof. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I only saw some of this movie but i think it is very funny. Jeff bridges can act very good. and andy griffith plays a very good meanie. i remeber the last scent when griffith saves the day. i think it is funny movie

5-0 out of 5 stars an underrated classic
This movie hasn't exactly gone down in history, but it should. Jeff Bridges is incredible as a young man with iron determination to become a western writer against all the curves that fate can throw at him (like outright mockery and severe beatings) and Andy Griffith is even better as an old western writer-actor with an amiable exterior and a ruthless interior. Blythe Danner comes on like a modern Jean Arthur, only better. Full of great scenes, including one of a low budget musical ("Get rid of the noodle in the pith helmet."). Film fans, you have got to see this one. It is guaranteed to leave you with a happy feeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuinely sweet, genuinely funny, and urbane cowpokes too
This film is full of scoundrels and opportunists and still manages to make life seem delicious. Long before Gwenyth Paltrow was famous her mother, Blythe Danner, was known by aficionados as someone that picked superb material. She's here as The Girl, savvy but still sweet enough to fall for the truly endearing and monumentally naive Jeff Bridges. Alan Arkin does a sublime high strung director of 1920s cowboy movies, and you won't believe what Andy Griffith can do. See it and feel great not in a sappy way: a truly grown up delight.

3-0 out of 5 stars a treasure!
Jeff Bridges was wonderful in this little gem- a hint of good things to come! What fun seeing Andy Griffith as a meanie! Glad I found this video at amazon.com

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality...Tsk, Tsk
First of all, the episodes on this volume were great. It's the quality that upsets me. The first episode ("Mork's First Christmas") was in pretty good condition, but the second episode ("Mork Goes Erk") was in REALLY bad condition! I'd rather get these episodes from someone who taped them off Nick at Nite or from the Canadian Comedy Channel.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BUY IN AGES!
Williams is a comic genius. He may own an Oscar for Good Will Hunting, but Mork is still by far his best work. Mork and Mindy perfectly captures the raw, unpredictable and exceptional comic talent which is purely Williams' own. The two episodes on this video are two of the best episodes from all four years of this heart-warming, side-splitting and award-winning comedy. I would strongly reccommend this video, and all other three volumes, to anyone who likes to laugh. It's one of the best purchases I have made in a long time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Problaly the most dramatic episodes in the series
When I was little I was a HUGE fanatic of the series (okay I still am, but that's not the point here) These two episodes showcase some of the best dramatic (and we are talking serious acting) from Williams and Dawber.

In the first one, Mindy discovers she has a major case of represed grief after learning her father is remarrying. Mindy's nightmare flash back scared the living daylights out of me when I was little, and it is still very sobering.

The second episode is more typical except at the end when Mork, lamenting celebrity, rattles off a list of famous people who died too young. Although Williams is a master actor, you can tell he slips out of character for a moment when he ads John Lennon with a crack in his voice. Imediately followed by silence (as opposed to the usual gag-signing off, it too is very sobering. Even those too young to remember John Lennon will know the signifigance of the change in plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best movie, ever!!
WHY ISN'T THIS OUT ON DVD????? Uncle Meat is a work of genius that has stood the test of time - a brilliant dissection of the commercial music industry and art in general. The film offers great comedy, surreal footage and awesome avant garde musical performances. Frank Zappa is a genius! The best part is you can watch this again and again and never get bored, every time you discover something new. This has to be my favorite movie of all time. Highly recommended. Apple-O

2-0 out of 5 stars For hardcore Zappa fans ONLY
Man, I'm a pretty big Zappa fan, but this isn't the easiest movie to sit through. If you've seen 200 Motels, you have a basic idea of what to expect from Zappa the film-maker. However, while 200 Motels was bizarre, Uncle Meat is just plain inane. The movie follows no direction at all. Scenes of people talking about unrelated things are just stitched together to make the movie. The one thing that makes the movie worth seeing is the performance of the concert that appears on the "Ahead Of Their Time" CD. Even that isn't really enough to encourage anyone to pay anything over [dollar amount] for the movie. [...] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Addressing The "BULLY" Issue and Good Suspense
I am amazed that some non-Christians have tried to knock this movie based upon it's content. This is NOT a movie inteneded to convert people to follow Christ.

The main focus of this movie is to convert a very good novel to the silver-screen. I think it is done quite well. The movie has a great plot, good sub-plots and plenty intense moments.

I agree Frank Peretti over-acted in this film, but hey, the film's good points far outweigh its bad points. The acting was very believable, and the bullying scenes could have been pulled right out of any high school, today. I used to be one of those ignorant bullies myself...

Leighton Meester plays Elisha Springfield flawlessly, and she is one of the most beautiful people on the planet.

David Keith (playing Nate Springfield) did a great job, after the "drug bust" scene, which I think was a low point in the movie's acting.

Andrea Morris was excellent in her role as the tormented Crystal Sparks. She really added a lot to this movie. I actually felt sad for her character during the movie.

Jake Richardson was good as Ian Snyder.

All and all, I think this movie was way better than Arachnophobia, and I think it is not a movie that tries to push Jesus on anyone. I believe anti-Christians find that a threat in any action a believer takes; even if they ask you to pass the salt...

Buy the movie, it's good!

God Bless. :-)

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a start
As a fan of Frank Peretti's novels, the idea of one finally becoming a movie thrilled me. While I found "Hangman's Curse" a good book, it wouldn't have been my choice for a first movie. Still, they manage to adapt it reasonably well. It's a little slow-paced in parts, and yes, some of the acting is a little off, but it has its redeeming points. It's a family film that should keep the interest of teens and kids (though the adults will probably find themselves going to the kitchen for popcorn quite often).

The Christian message isn't overt. As a matter of fact, this couldn't really be considered a "Christian movie". Yes, one of the main characters prays during a crisis, but that's what most Christians do. There is no "Romans Road to Christ" laid out in the film, and it shouldn't offend anyone who's not a Christian. The special effects are good, especially for the budget they had to work with.

All in all, this is a movie I'm glad I watched, but I doubt I watch it again any time soon. I look forward to another Frank Peretti film in the future, but I hope it's "The Oath" or "This Present Darkness", either of which would be incredible. Don't judge Frank's works by this movie. Read his books instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars best movie ever

i saw it at a church camp
and it was so good scary but good
i rate this 5 out 5 stars because the beginning of the movie makes you want to watch the whole movie

4-0 out of 5 stars A good lesson against taking revenge
The only reason I did not give this movie five stars was because of the spiders. I'm severely arachnophobic, and if I'd known what was to come in the last half hour, I would probably never have hired this film.
That aside, I was disappointed to read so many negative inferences into the film. I did not see it as perpetuating the whole 'Jocks/mainstream is good - Goth is evil' thing. It was, however, a strong effort to warn both mainstream students about the evil in oppressing someone just because they are a little bit different (karma always comes back to bite you in the back), and a warning to anyone suffering at the hands of bullies about the dangers of trying to take revenge.
I also believe people have completely mis-interpreted the thanksgiving prayer right at the end of the film. It was a young man who was making his first effort at saying a prayer, and if anyone thinks God wouldn't have had a smile for him needs to take a good look at their own attitudes.
There is plenty to be positive about with this movie. One of my favourite points was when one of the Goth students tries to hang himself, and one of the jocks that had previously been harassing him ran to help and save him.
Hangman's Curse is a good story. My only concern is the lack of emphasis on the family's Christian beliefs. It is worth watching, though - assuming you're not arachnophobic.

5-0 out of 5 stars good story with good morals
I'm not usual interested in watching Christian films. mainly bc there put on a low buget and aren't done very well. But this one caught my eye cause i loved the book. I put it on and it was done really well, it followed the book (not to the letter no). It isn't something for little kids to watch, it kind of creepy. The lesson in the movie are good sure as consequence for bullying and what happens when you take revenge. All and all a great film! ... Read more

Comedic misfire from the mid-1970s in a futile attempt to bottle the same lightning that struck when Barbra Streisand teamed with Ryan O'Neal in What's Up, Doc? Here, Streisand plays a spoiled rich girl, the head of a bankrupt cosmetics company, who discovers she's lost everything--except her ownership of the contract of a washed-up boxer (O'Neal, known for his combative nature offscreen). So she tries to rally this dispirited pug into a comeback that will earn the kinds of purses that will put her back on her feet. Naturally, in the process romantic sparks are kindled. But despite a loud and energetic performance by Streisand, this Howard Zieff comedy doesn't add up to much.--Marshall Fine ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "I've got the same two words for you!"
I would actually give this film three-and-a-half stars. This film was a major hit upon release in the summer of '79, but it has since been written off by many as one of Streisand's weakest film efforts. As for myself, I could go about reviewing the film in two ways. I could say that the THE MAIN EVENT is a perfect example of a worn out premise given the by-the-book treatment, with no attempt to disguise how derivative and predictable the whole thing is. However, I could also say that THE MAIN EVENT manages to be likable, funny, and entertaining.

Both of these statements have a lot of merit, but I think I'm going to go with my second opinion. Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is quite enjoyable while it's playing. The scenes are set up well, the one-liners are mostly funny ("I said celebrate, not fornicate!"), and Streisand and O'Neal give off a strong sexual charge between them onscreen. It may not be meaningful, or even original, but THE MAIN EVENT is a pretty good timewaster.

About the DVD: The picture quality is great, and the mono sound is fine as well. It's great to have the original trailer and the 19-minute television special, titled GETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE MAIN EVENT, preserved on disc, although Streisand's brief audio commentary is slightly disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars She cant make a bad movie.
It has been quite a while since i have actually seen The Main Event but i have been trying to find it in the stores on video for quite a long time. I can remember loving the movie. There was a lot of screeming and yelling...but isnt that what boxers do. I thought the way they pick on each other is cute. I thought Barbra was precious. It is one of those movies that you come out feeling good which is hard to find these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie, but a PG rating?????
I liked the movie, it's fun and funny but what really surprised and shocked me was: PG RATING? Come on! 1. They show two butts in the movie, there is a lot of adult talk, and a lot of hintings to sexuality? It is a good movie, but I mean one would think more about the point of view of watching it depending on the rating of the movie.
All in all, this is a quite good movie which I like
Recommended, it's a lot of fun

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Entertaining but I've seen better
The Main Event was the first Streisand picture I ever saw. I loved it at the theaters. But since then I've seen many more of her movies on VHS. I have to say it's a good film but not her best. I liked "Yentl" or "Owl & Pussycat" or "A Star Is Born" much better. Her acting is superb, so is Ryan's. But the storyline is a little weak compared to other movies she is in. I reccommend it its just not her very best movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An obscure gem...
This is an early documentary by director Terry Zwigoff ("Crumb", "Ghost World") that focuses on an old time music/blues player named William Howard Armstrong. Armstrong was 75 at the time this film was shot, but he was still capable of some blistering playing. We get to see him play the fiddle, the guitar, the banjo, the ukelele, and some hybrid instruments. He appears with the players he has been with for years and years.

Interspersed between the musical shots are slice-of-life vignettes where we get to hear our hero trading philosophy and folksy wisdom, along with some very ribald stories, with his compadres. We also get to look at some of his colorful, "realist" (artist's own description) paintings of African-American life. But the real treat for me was a treasure he has kept locked up since he created it. It's a "prostitute's bible" with folktales, how-to guides, anecdotes (personal and otherwise), cut-out magazine photos, and some charmingly explicit and colorful drawings. I would pay at least $100 for a copy of it. When asked why he keeps it locked away, he replies that he does so to avoid "the man" keeping him locked away. It's unfortunate that this video hasn't been released on DVD, because in effect, its obscurity does keep Louie Bluie locked away. ... Read more

Directors Howard Ziehm and Michael Benveniste draw from the same cliffhanging Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s as the glitzy 1980 tongue-in-cheek space opera for their soft-core spoof. Hockey hero Flesh Gordon and often-naked love interest Dale Ardor join Dr. Jerkoff in his battle against the mad Emperor Wang from the planet Porno, who has unleashed his diabolical sex ray on the Earth. Full of toilet humor, juvenile sexual innuendo, and unending naked romps and orgies, it's hardly in the same company as the Mel Brooks genre goofs Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. But amidst the slack direction, flat performances, and grungy photography are some lovingly crafted low-tech effects, including marvelous stop-motion creatures from Jim Danforth and spaceships courtesy of future Oscar winners Greg Jein and Dennis Muren. The film's best sequence is a King Kong tribute with a giant rampaging satyr (voiced by an uncredited Craig T. Nelson, who ad-libs quips in a cultured but expletive-filled whine) kidnapping Dale as Flesh buzzes him his phallic space ship. All the restoration in the world won't make this dark, grainy, bargain-basement parody look any better, but the retro effects, inspired score, and playful attitude make this silly sex romp a kitschy cult item from the randy 1970s. --Sean Axmaker ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wang rules
Oh bless this film! First the poor parts that caused a 4 rating. They have nothing to do with the plot. Transferance created some grainy parts, as well as the occasional `skip' BUT, this movie is absolutely the best spoof of the Flash Gordon series. Originally, Back in the `70s, Flesh was supposed to be `X' rated. By todays standards, this is PG-13. There are little or no swear words, but there is frequent nudity. What cracks me up is the virginial Dale Ardor has a huge caesarian scar! Dr. Jerkoff, Planet Porno, Emporer Wang. Perfect spoof names. When the Amazon Queen (black patch over one eye and a leather patch over the opposite boobie) proclaimed herself as Chief Nellie, I damn near died. The quick scene of 50 followers of Emperor Wang, performing a nude Bunny Hop, slayed me. The stop action Penisaurus cave was parody plus. The backgroud space shots are purposely 2nd grader quality (wires cannily included), and enhance the absurdity. I love the bizarre. I adore the blatantcy of the campy lines. This DVD is NOT for your 13 year olds. Those of you who remember the 70's like I do, will want this DVD for your library. If you do NOT remember the Flash Gordon Series or Movie (Queen soundtrack) you will view this with utterly aghast amazement (hard to believe they had this kind of Mitchell Brothers humor 30 years ago), but you still appreciate the Young Frankenstein approach. This movie was made cheaply, cheesy, and superbly. Trust me. I am never wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Cult Movie Parody
Everything from ROBINHOOD to KING KONG gets a whack from this early 1970s parody of the 1930s FLASH GORDON serial, which has a story line in keeping with the sexual revolution. A mysterious "sex" ray that turns otherwise normal people into sex maniacs is plaguing the earth--and is eventually traced to the planet Porno, ruled by evil Emperor Wang. And so our hero Flesh, his lady love Dale Ardor, and their scientific genius Dr. Jerkoff set out for planet Porno to defeat Wang... only to find themselves victims of his REALLY kinky ways! As film-making goes, the quality of this parody is often quite poor, the material itself is extremely uneven, and the performers merely so-so--but what the filmmakers lack in experience they more than make up for in imagination. Witness the attack of the dreaded Penisaurus! Behold Prince Precious' Reward! Beware the intiation of the underground lesbians! With everything from stop-motion animation monsters to some truly Freudian art design, cult-film fans and most others will probably find lots to enjoy--but FLESH GORDON is an acquired taste. Some will find that joke runs dry long before the film ends; others will consider it juvenile and distasteful.

A WORD OF WARNING. Some reviewers note that the film received an X rating in the early 1970s when X ratings were much more freely given than they are today. That is true; after all, even MIDNIGHT COWBOY was rated X, if you can imagine it. Even so, there is considerable nudity and simulated sex in FLESH GORDON, and during one or two of the crowd scenes it seems obvious that at least one of the couples is well gone into X territory. While I wouldn't describe FLESH GORDON as pornography, it remains fairly raw stuff, and you may want to keep that in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth
I saw this film as a historical documentation in it's day, having been there. A triumph over the times. The DVD is not the same. Cant be. I wish it could be so.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money and time
Cheap. Stupid. Hokey and not very erotic or interesting. A big waste of money! I saw the movie in a theater in an upscale neighborhood in the early 1970s when X-rated films were still shown in normal theaters. I thought it was one of the most erotic movies I'd seen. Hadn't seen that many to that point. So when I got a gift certificate to BN, I bought the DVD, among other things. It came and I was VERY disappointed. I guess I'd forgotten how bad it was. Extremely bad acting, even by X-movie standards. (Well, maybe not, but ...). Extremely bad 'effects' -- among the worst you'll ever seen anywhere. No beginning film-maker would be caught dead doing such silly models and animations nowadays. It might be a 'classic' in somebody's book. If so, it is a terrific argument for trashing and forgetting such 'classics' forever. Embarrassing. In a word. I barely could sit through it. Kept hoping it would get interesting. Didn't

3-0 out of 5 stars So bad it's good... well, kinda
Flesh Gordon is easily one of the "best" worst movies that I've ever seen. If you're openminded and enjoy a good eroti-comedy, then you might enjoy this one. The picture here isn't great and neither is the sound (especially since it's called a collector's edition), but it's okay for what it is. Just don't watch this movie with kids since it contains both male and female full frontal nudity. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Food for the Coen Bros
Yes! I agree with the Coen Bros references. This is a wonderful film. The Time Out film guide rightly says that this film defines the term 'offbeat'. I found myself chuckling every few minutes. Caan was pumping out some true classics in his peak (71-74) and here you really appeaciate the nuances of the role. Look at the way he reacts to Kellerman's 'Crazy chick' - perfect! But the real star here is the writer W.D.Richter. I see from IMDB that he hasn't had a film out in over 5 years. Why? He's a bloody genius!

4-0 out of 5 stars Kellerman & Caan: an easy match
When critics do their lists of the great screen couples, bet you ten-to-one they'll overlook this duo. James Caan and Sally Kellerman are a wild pair of would-bes: he's an ex-con, she's a sexy, daffy schizophrenic. Throw in Peter Boyle and Louise Lasser as a nutty pair of suburbanites who go along for the ride and you've got a comedy classic. Deadpan jokes, unforced direction, a wild chase scene. True genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slick & Lithe
Although not a big fan of any of the main actors here, with the possible exception of Boyle, this is nevertheless a great screwball comedy. Fine comic plot involving the search for illicit money that works itself out perfectly, memorable comic characters, including eccentric subsidiary ones like Shull and Garfield, and just the exact right pace. An untrumpeted masterpiece. Truly memorable

5-0 out of 5 stars A forgetten gem
Leonard Maltin, as usual, doesn't know what he's talking about. "Perfect TV fare"? The Coen Brothers were nominated for Oscars by making films comparable to this one - a strange, quirky comedy with a twisted take on life. Characters are clueless, the misunderstand each other, they inadvertently cause the destruction of themselves and others, and it's all very, very funny. Peter Boyle is great in it, everyone is, from Louise Lasser to James Cahn to Sally Kellerman. Better yet, it also features Richard B. Schul, Alex Rocco and Alan Garfield - you can't miss! Ranks along with The Big Bus and Slapshot as one of the funniest comedies of the seventies, the most misunderstood and unfairly maligned decade of filmmaking in the histiory of American film and this, my dear friends, happens to be one of its classics. ... A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Home Alone career, but Anna Chlumsky is unusually sophisticated in her understanding of her character and situation. Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are perfectly stable as the kids' single parents. Directed by Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MY GIRL.
I love MY GIRL. It's about an 11-year-old tomboy named Vada, who is growing up in the 70s. She never met her mother because her mother died when she was born. Vada lives with her widowed father who owns a funeral parlor and the funeral parlor happens to be Vada's home, as well. Vada is obsessed with death because she sees dead people coming into her home every day. Her best friend is a boy named Tommy J. (Macaulay Culkin) who is allergic to just about anything you can think of. Vada is also in love with her school teacher. When Vada's father hires a cosmatologist to put makeup on the dead people (and ends up falling in love with her), Vada soon starts to learn the true meaning of life. This flick also stars Dan Aykroyd as Vada's father, Jamie Lee Curtis as Shelly, the woman Vada's father falls in love with, and newcomer Anna Chlumsky as Vada. This is a great coming-of-age story that is very moving and at the same time, enjoyable and entertaining. With an all-star cast and serpurb acting, MY GIRL is a great movie to watch anytime! I also recommend the sequel, MY GIRL 2, which is just as good. If not, better!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Top 10--Bittersweet Comedy
'My Girl,' is one of my top ten family comedy films since they've been making movies. It ranks as the most entertaining, heartwarming stories about coming-of-age and apply yourself parenthood. About a mannerly, awkward little guy named Thomas (Macaulay Culkin) becomes the object of 11 year-old Vada Sultenfuss' affections (Amy Chlumsky). Vada is distant from her father, Harry (Dan Aykroyd). Vada never knew her mother. Her mother died when she was born. So, naturally in such emotional surroundings, her dad runs a funeral home. She is obsessed with death. Things begin to see light when a make-up artist, Shelly Devoto (Jamie Lee Curtis) answers Harry's job want ad. She's one smart cookie who gets Harry to realize that life isn't just death...don't ignore the living..especially his daughter. Vada is very mature for her age and has a kind of wisdom for someone her age. There are some funny lines here and there. My favorite is Vada and Thomas walking home from school. Vada asks, "Why do you think people want to get married?" and Thomas replies "When you get old, you just have to". You can feel the emotion after Thomas is fatally stung by a hive of bees. It's easy for younger kids to view it, as it's geniusly pieced together to filter the aftershock. Vada must realize her best friend has gone, and her look at life and death had changed. She gives a lovely eulogy about, "The Weeping Willow....he left one day/Is it because he could not stay/He found shelter in your shade/...../ for there is something to calm your fears; / If you think death has ripped you forever apart / I know he'll always be in your heart." In the end, Harry and Shelby become capable parents for Vada. 'My Girl' is a bittersweet tale of growing up and single parents becoming a family again that the whole family will enjoy. It'll make you wanna cry and smile all at the same time. I got that title soundtrack song in my head by The Temptations that won't go away :), ASIN: B00000284Z. If you like this film you'll like it's sequel much more, 'My Girl 2.'

5-0 out of 5 stars No less than the best film to reach our screens...ever!
The fist time i watched this film i vowed i was going to change my name by depol to Veda Sultanfuss, get a bike with streamers, a boy as a best mate an make sure he didn't go near bee's. this film tackles a lot of really good issues from a childs perspective. Veda has the trauma of believing she is responsible for her mothers death to deal with, along with the fact her father (harry) pays more attention to his new girlfriend than her and then to top it all of her best mate pops his cloggs! i cry ever time i watch it even thogh i know every line, pause and song.
its funny, touching and a good sunday afternoon family film.
if i hadn't of grown up with this film i hate to think what kind of person i'd have turned out to be =D...x
