The more I watched it the more I came to understand that this film is one of the true classics ever made and features some of the greatest actors and actresses to ever grace the silver screen. It is now easily one of my very favorite movies. Leslie Howard (Gone With The Wind) stars as Sir Percy Blakeney, a super hero of the French Revolution, who masquerades as a man who should be afraid of his own shadow. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the Zorro stories were spawned in part by exposure to The Scarlet Pimpernel. Merle Oberon (Wuthering Heights), one of the great leading ladies of Hollywood, stars as Lady Marguerite Blakeney, a woman who holds a terrible secret about her past and wonders why her husband is a dandy. Rounding out the cast is Raymond Massey (East of Eden) who stars as the sinister Citizen Chauvelin. A movie's greatness is shown in whether its remakes offer something new and revolutionary or copy it verbatim. The remake of this movie that aired in the late seventies/early eighties, was a complete copy of this 1934 classic. Don't waste any time on it and relish the classic performance by Howard, Oberon and Massey.
This movie is based on the legendary story of the Scarlet Pimpernel, risen in a time of rampant Leftism (revolutionary France, set on social and political implosion) and burgeoise England (eventually saved only by the rise of Rev. Wesley). My wife is one for early romantic movies, but I am the one who thinks the most romantic and tear-jerking scene (don't psychoanalyze me here -- I think I just love the play of raw courage vs. naivite) I have ever seen is in this movie. Holding Oberon by the shoulders in his palms, Howard stares her straight in the eyes, "What price did you pay?!!" he declares. This is the crux of their relationship. The political savior, Howard, is in a much more subtle plot -- saving men, women, and children one at a time from the reach of hard-Leftists set on destroying stability in Europe militantly and in blood in order to rebuild the society under their own ideal. Perhaps many people won't get it, but this movie is well worth the watching no matter by whom, a lesson for those who can think, and real entertainment for those who will not. ... Read more | |

The most visually stunning of all Bond films, Thunderball's sheer cinematic beauty comes glistening through on the remastered DVD print. The light, tropical hues of The Bahamas radiate like never before and the vast scope of the dazzling underwater scenes are fully appreciated on the widescreen transfer. Having personally viewed this Bond classic at least 200 times on standard video, I felt as though I was seeing it for the first time via widescreen DVD. The plot involves Emilio Largo(Adolfo Celi) as sinister SPECTRE baddie #2 who threatens to nuke Miami unless paid a hefty ransom by the British government and NATO. Of course, Bond has just four days in which to save the world -- four days filled with such distractions as an array of willing women, killer sharks, and exploding cars and boats! Celi is absolutely captivating as Largo, the eye-patched criminal mastermind. Deliberate and understated, Largo catches on to Bond, and his intent, early on. The ensuing cat and mouse chase begins cordially before turning deadly. The pursuit of Bond through the Junkanoo Parade in the streets of Nausau is positively nerve-wracking. Ditto a pair of horrific scenes in Largo's swimming pool which convieniently doubles as a deadly shark tank. Italian actress Luciana Paluzzi nearly steals the show as Fiona Volpe a femme fatale killer who yearns for Bond in more than one way. Paluzzi lights up the screen, oozing equal parts temptation and evil. Former Miss France, Claudine Auger turns in a fine performance as Bond's main love interest Domino. The fact the Domino just happens to be Largo's mistress doesn't stop our favorite super-spy from pursuing her. Rik Van Nutter's portrayal of CIA operative Felix Leiter is perhaps the series' finest. Of course, Moneypenny, Q and M all flawlessly reprise their respective roles. A perfect blend of From Russia with Love's suspense and Goldfinger's fun-filled explosiveness, Thunderball is undoubtedly one of the best Bond films. MGM did a great job on the DVD, thus making Thunderball a necessary addition to every Bond fan's collection.

Well not in this thing, though you can tell that he's trying, but he's dealing with lousy direction, a horrible script, and he's trying to play a character that has been definitively played by one of the comic geniuses of the century. The plot, as feeble as can be expected for the genre, would actually have some interesting potential if it could have exploited today's digital technology. Imagine a dozen Clouseau's bumping into each other as they all accidentally rob the same bank. I haven't seen the other Clouseau flicks recently enough to remember if they all were like this, but this G-rated flick had enough gay innuendo to almost consider that this was brilliantly hidden subversive material. Somehow, though, I doubt it.

But something happened to Zhang Yimou, and his artistry--as perhaps one of the greatest directors of all time--waned. Was it perhaps because he lost his muse, Gong Li, star of "Shanghai Triad" and "Raise the Red Lantern"? Many professional reviewers speculate that Gong Li's departure is the cause for Yimou's artistic slump, but regardless of the cause, Yimou seems to be on the rise again with this film "Happy Times." Zhao (Bensahn Zhao), an unemployed, middle-aged lonely factory worker longs for a wife. After being jilted 18 times, he decides to marry an unpleasant, domineering divorcee. While friends scoff at photographs of Zhao's large new fiancee, Zhao defends her rubenesque proportions by stating that the other 18 women left him because they were skinny, and as this fiancee is far from skinny, Zhao believes she will stay put and marry him. Zhao, in order to impress the divorcee, brags that as the manager of the "Happy Times" hotel, he is fairly well-to-do. Problems develop when the divorcee contends that they need 50,000 yen in order to get married in style, and this is when Zhao starts to involve his friends in his relationship. Acting on the advice of his best friend (who also has no money), Zhao refurbishes an abandoned bus as a romantic retreat for lovers with the idea that the lovers will pay for their privacy. The divorcee, who really is a most unpleasant character, decides that the non-existent "Happy Times" hotel would be the perfect place to dump her unwanted blind step-daughter, Ying, and before Zhao realizes it, he is responsible for the neglected, frail blind teenage girl. Zhao's faulty logic, accompanied by his unrelenting desire to please and placate his nasty fiancee lead to further fabrications and eventually to disaster. The title of the DVD, "Happy Times," is ironic--just as the "Happy Times" hotel does not exist, there are also really no "happy times" for any of the characters in this film. Happiness remains elusive--or exists in the imagination, at best. Zhao's make-believe hotel--a metaphor for life--is really only a gutted, abandoned bus that serves as a tacky love nest. Similarly, happy times for Zhao and Ying are elusive and fleeting moments spent eating an ice cream, and describing the colours and patterns in a dress. There is no lasting happiness in reality, and yet indulging in fabrications and make-believe ultimately also brings unhappiness to those who indulge in fantasies.
It is about a lonely man named Zhao who is trying for the 18th time to get the perfect wife who he thinks he has found in quite a large woman with an obnoxious son, and a blind step daughter. Zhao tells the woman that he owns a hotel and that he has the money pouring in. What he has in fact is an old bus that young couples frequent to make out in. The woman hates her step daughter and dumps the girl on Zhao. In order to keep up his appearance as a wealthy man he builds a fake massage parlor along with a group of his friends who are also out of work. The girl Mu(?) is happy working with Zhao, but of course things don't stay that way. I loved themain character Zhao from the instant he appeared on the screen he is just a very likeable guy. But one does feel pretty bad for the yung girl who is not wanted by her step mother or her father. She finds olace with a middle age man who keeps her just to put up appearnces. The ending will leave you in tears once you see how Zhao and the girl's relationship grows.
I've long been a film buff - my favorite films tend to be artsy and rather pedantic. Because of this, my family generally doesn't like to sit with me and watch movies. So, when I started "Happy Times" last night, I thought they'd gradually wander off and find something else to do. But, they were enthralled! This movie is the perfect balancing act between comedy, drama, and the enduring love we feel for those who have touched us in a special way. This is a great, great movie. Too many Americans shun foreign films. This is one they shouldn't miss. When the movie ended, my oldest son turned to me and said, "Wow. I think Hollywood has forgotten how to make movies like this!" American filmmakers seem to think they have to descend to the baser instincts in order to make "adult" movies. Yet, "Happy Times" - and countless other foreign films - never seem to sink to this level. These films are always excellent. I think the issue is that Hollywood has forgotten how to write a good story; they've forgotten that basic human values can be enduring, can be entertaining, if only they would jettison their cynical baggage. "Happy Times" will make you laugh and cry, smile and reflect with pride on the better angels of our nature. -

This movie starts out with a wonderful (and I do mean wonderful) view of Arnold's posterior (I'm quivering and blushing as I type). I immediately hit the rewind button for another view of 'The Vos'. He is making love to his wife when something strange happens. Vosloo (An ER Doctor) tells his therapists that his and his wife's memory of that night is a bit hazy. Through hypnosis they both remember--that aliens impregnated her! Vos teams up with an alien abduction expert to save his(uncooperative)wife before it is to late.
A doctor and his wife are trying to have a baby. One night they are interrupted by a bright light and they discover that two hours have gone by. The husband is bothered by this but really freaks out when a bright light flashed in his eyes causes him to space out for a few minutes. His wife is now pregnant. Hypnosis and seeing a TV spot about alien abduction gets him thinking. The film progresses nicely as the doctor becomes more and more convinced that there is something wrong with the baby his wife is carrying. One of the great things about this film is that you are kept guessing as to whether he is crazy or not. This is much more of a psychological thriller than a gore fest, so those looking for the gore may be disappointed (there is a little), but those looking for a film with actual creepiness will find a tasty treat with this one. One other note, you might notice that the husband is almost always on screen (he does an excellent job).

From the Aaron Spelling stable of TV movies comes this tale with Ricky Nelson (and his wife Kris Nelson) as an idealistic couple. Ricky is running for Mayor of a small western town against Edward Andrews who plays a corrupt town boss. Jack Elam is his Sheriff and Andy Devine is his Judge, both firmly entrenched in his back pocket. Pat O'Brien comes to town as Ricky Nelson's father-in-law, a retired Texas Ranger who rounds up his old partners (Walter Brennan, Edgar Buchanan and Chill Wills)!!! Throw in Gypsy Rose Lee as the owner of the local saloon and you got yourself a pretty good (for TV) rip-snorting western. You know how it's going to play out, but watching the all these stars in action makes up for a sub-par script. Unfortunately the transfer is from a well-used print that looks like it was recorded in long play mode. At times, scenes taking place at night are almost unwatchable. But the chance to see these stars of westerns in their later years is a treat you should not miss if you're a fan of the western genre. Brentwood/BCI put in their usual extras, six chapter stops, a DVD dictionary, trivia game and a short subject (Hal Roach's "Little Rascals"). This movie is also in a 10 pack of westerns at about triple the price for this one film from Brentwood Home Video called "The Wild West" and is available from Amazon.com.

Anyways, that matter aside, let's talk about the movie. 3 Ninjas from different clans unite to ward off Evil. Each Ninja with their own special sword, come together as one. Evil is rampant, Lord Nobunaga Oda with his evil intentions sends out all his evil artillery to smash the Ninjas and thier allies. His goal, to spread evil and demons throughout the land. Ayame, is a young girl who sees her life and family shattered before her innocent eyes, yet she is helpless to do anything. Vengeance becomes her lifelong obsession. Ryoma, a Ninja from a neighboring clan, kindhearted and sweet is her companion and ally. And of course, Sakon (my favorite guy) is the Ninja who can feel the treachery of those around him, and sees the battles and evil as never ending. I will not say anymore, but I seriously recommend this movie. Take my advise and watch this great animated movie. I has everything, including Love.
The movie itself isn't that bad, its just I cannot give this DVD, nor any butchered version of the OVA series a good rating. The series features 3 ninjas fighting against Nobunaga Oda (an evil ruler at one time in Japan's history) as they try and stop his attempts to take over the world. The movie is kind of a beast/ninja movie which would fare over well for some viewers, but it failed to capture my interest. With all of my personal opinons aside, the DVD itself does include some good extras. With deleted scenes being the key extras on the disc, it also has a "meet the cast" option as well with the traditional U.S. MANGA "DVD Sneak Peaks". Overall, I'm sad that this could-be great anime was delivered in such a poor way. If you can overlook the fact that you won't be seeing the entire movie no matter what when you buy the DVD (even if they give you 2-3 deleted scenes), then you should probably pick this up. Also, if you are a fan of the ninja/demon beast genre it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

I admire the film for its simplistic story-line set under a light tone. The picture quality was pretty bad, but what else do you expect from a student film? The cinematography is moderate, the sound is reasonably clear, even the scenes appear professionally synchronized. Like a satisfying appetizer, this movie is refreshing as it is delightful. However, if you have a soft spot for Jim Carry, I suggest viewing his later features, such as Ace Ventura and The Mask. Do not be fooled by the cover, this is no Jim Carry "knock-out", but the pleasant premises makes up for it. Buy it for easy, quick enjoyment (as well a glimpse of the "softer" side of Jim Carry). The plot is tight, economical and well crafted....taciturn, moody Detective Frank Bullitt (McQueen) is charged with the protection of a key witness vital to an upcoming trial involving Mafia connections. Whilst hidden away in a supposed secure location, the witness and his police guard are brutally gunned down by unknown assailants. The heat is turned up on Bullitt by his tough Captain (Simon Oakland) and the manipulative, opportunistic politician Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) to come up with the right answers fast ! Between the draining investigation, Bullitt struggles to maintain his relationship with his cultured, sensitive girlfriend, Cathy (Jacqueline Bisset) Primarily coming from a TV series background, Englishman Peter Yates (directing his fourth movie) did a commendable job as director on "Bullitt"...producing a complex, intense crime thriller with a unique style that would ultimately influence many other films. Yates would later to go onto direct Robert Mitchum in the excellent "sleeper" crime film "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" ! And of course "Bullitt" is reknowned for it's now legendary car chase between Frank Bullitt's 390 GT Mustang and the two hitmen in their black, Dodge Charger 440 Magnum barrelling through the city streets and highways of San Francisco....just don't pay too much attention to how many times they pass that slow-moving, green VW Beetle !! The DVD transfer is excellent in both sound and picture quality, and the Limited Edition Set with the extra goodies (Single sheet poster, shooting draft, lobby cards etc.) is a real bonus for keen film fans !! One of my favourite cop thrillers....McQueen sizzles on screen !!
The good and the bad: True, there is a high-speed car chase in part through the hilly streets of San Francisco. Is it "the best ever" chase? Depends on how you look at it. Plus - It was very high speed. Plus - It had a cool-looking Mustang fastback vs a big GTO.
