5-0 out of 5 stars SINK ME! ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS
My mother, who was a lover of great old movies, introduced me to this film years ago. At first I thought it dull and dry, being too much accustomed to the new special effects that were beginning to dominate film.

The more I watched it the more I came to understand that this film is one of the true classics ever made and features some of the greatest actors and actresses to ever grace the silver screen. It is now easily one of my very favorite movies.

Leslie Howard (Gone With The Wind) stars as Sir Percy Blakeney, a super hero of the French Revolution, who masquerades as a man who should be afraid of his own shadow. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the Zorro stories were spawned in part by exposure to The Scarlet Pimpernel. Merle Oberon (Wuthering Heights), one of the great leading ladies of Hollywood, stars as Lady Marguerite Blakeney, a woman who holds a terrible secret about her past and wonders why her husband is a dandy. Rounding out the cast is Raymond Massey (East of Eden) who stars as the sinister Citizen Chauvelin.

A movie's greatness is shown in whether its remakes offer something new and revolutionary or copy it verbatim. The remake of this movie that aired in the late seventies/early eighties, was a complete copy of this 1934 classic. Don't waste any time on it and relish the classic performance by Howard, Oberon and Massey.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Movie vs. the Book
I would have liked this movie had I not read the book first. But once you read the book, you realize that this movie is a VERY poor adaption. The book is a lot more exciting and fun. And Leslie Howard was really miscast as Sir Percy Blakeney. He's too.....I guess depressing is the word. The point is that he doesn't do the character any justice. If you want "The Scarlet Pimpernel"....Read the Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very good film
This film has most everyting adventure romance, but also an underlying sadness as its during the French Revolution. Merl Oberon is beautiful does a great acting job and also Leslie Howard plays the Scarlet PImpernel so very very well. Hes very talented in all his films this I think is one of his best.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Old Movie Gets Shortsheeted.
I had a tattered old copy of this movie on video for years that had finally begun to degrade due to the number of passes it had endured through the VCR. When I brought this DVD home I had such high anticipation to see the classic on a digital format, but was sorely disappointed to find out that Madacy Entertainment had shortened the movie by removing scenes from it. Now, why they had done this is unknown, but it was a great disappointment to both me and my wife.
I constantly wonder why the scenes aren't there (being in video post production myself), and often question whether the DVD has an error in it's encoding and is skipping the scenes, or if Madacy for some reason took the scenes out due to time constraints.
In spite of this flaw, the movie is still a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story for Our Times
Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon, I think, are in their most romantic roles ever.

This movie is based on the legendary story of the Scarlet Pimpernel, risen in a time of rampant Leftism (revolutionary France, set on social and political implosion) and burgeoise England (eventually saved only by the rise of Rev. Wesley).

My wife is one for early romantic movies, but I am the one who thinks the most romantic and tear-jerking scene (don't psychoanalyze me here -- I think I just love the play of raw courage vs. naivite) I have ever seen is in this movie. Holding Oberon by the shoulders in his palms, Howard stares her straight in the eyes, "What price did you pay?!!" he declares. This is the crux of their relationship.

The political savior, Howard, is in a much more subtle plot -- saving men, women, and children one at a time from the reach of hard-Leftists set on destroying stability in Europe militantly and in blood in order to rebuild the society under their own ideal.

Perhaps many people won't get it, but this movie is well worth the watching no matter by whom, a lesson for those who can think, and real entertainment for those who will not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Own on DVD
Explosive action, stunning locales, a tight plot and Sean Connery's most convincing turn as the world's favorite spy make Thunderball one of the finest-- if not the finest -- entries in the James Bond film series. Add to that a DVD package chock full of dynamic extras such as "behind the scenes" documentaries and two highly informative audio commentaries and you've got yourself a must own movie.

The most visually stunning of all Bond films, Thunderball's sheer cinematic beauty comes glistening through on the remastered DVD print. The light, tropical hues of The Bahamas radiate like never before and the vast scope of the dazzling underwater scenes are fully appreciated on the widescreen transfer. Having personally viewed this Bond classic at least 200 times on standard video, I felt as though I was seeing it for the first time via widescreen DVD.

The plot involves Emilio Largo(Adolfo Celi) as sinister SPECTRE baddie #2 who threatens to nuke Miami unless paid a hefty ransom by the British government and NATO. Of course, Bond has just four days in which to save the world -- four days filled with such distractions as an array of willing women, killer sharks, and exploding cars and boats!

Celi is absolutely captivating as Largo, the eye-patched criminal mastermind. Deliberate and understated, Largo catches on to Bond, and his intent, early on. The ensuing cat and mouse chase begins cordially before turning deadly. The pursuit of Bond through the Junkanoo Parade in the streets of Nausau is positively nerve-wracking. Ditto a pair of horrific scenes in Largo's swimming pool which convieniently doubles as a deadly shark tank.

Italian actress Luciana Paluzzi nearly steals the show as Fiona Volpe a femme fatale killer who yearns for Bond in more than one way. Paluzzi lights up the screen, oozing equal parts temptation and evil.

Former Miss France, Claudine Auger turns in a fine performance as Bond's main love interest Domino. The fact the Domino just happens to be Largo's mistress doesn't stop our favorite super-spy from pursuing her.

Rik Van Nutter's portrayal of CIA operative Felix Leiter is perhaps the series' finest. Of course, Moneypenny, Q and M all flawlessly reprise their respective roles.

A perfect blend of From Russia with Love's suspense and Goldfinger's fun-filled explosiveness, Thunderball is undoubtedly one of the best Bond films. MGM did a great job on the DVD, thus making Thunderball a necessary addition to every Bond fan's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Connery at His Unadulterated Best on DVD
Double entendres abound in this aquatic tale of intrigue, action and adventure 007 style. And make no mistake about it; Sean Connery makes this his picture. This may not have the narrative flow of a "Goldfinger" but Connery's confident and energetic performance and the villain's well-laid out caper makes this one of the most entertaining, realistic and tongue-in-cheek films in the series. This film was made at the pinnacle of the James Bond phenomenon and it shows. No cost was too great. This movie is big and it looks and feels big in every way. The underwater bellicose -ballet is one of the best pieces of action ever put on film thanks to Lamar Boren's colorful and beautiful photography and John Barry's original, innovative and intuitive scoring. The opening fight scene between Bond and Jacques Boitier in the chateau is one the best choreographed and edited of the series. What really makes this film is the dialogue. Connery's one-liners, his banter with Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo and Luciana Paluzzi as Fiona Volpe and his delivery is brimming with aplomb, wit, humor and confidence all rolled into one. Claudine Auger, Molly Peters, Luciana Paluzzi and Martine Beswick are the ultimate 'Bond Girls.' Production designer Ken Adam, Art design Peter Murton, Cinematographer Ted Moore, Special effects expert John Stears, Editor Peter Hunt, Composer John Barry, Screenwriter Richard Maibaum and Director Terence Young make this one of the best Bond films of the series. Bernard Lee as "M," Lois Maxwell as Moneypenny and Desmond Llewelyn as "Q" all give their best performances. One of the best looking Bond films! It sounds better than ever in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound!

5-0 out of 5 stars The second best film of Bond series
Thunderball is a feast eye. Visually stunnig with advanced and ingenious twist and ideas.
The presence of Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo and one of the most beautiful Bond's girls - Claudine Auger , are winners components.
The unforgettable submarine fight deserved for this film won Best special effects . And from its release became in a classic sequence.
Funny and plenty of chases , sharks and arresting locations.
After Goldfinger , this could be the most clever and kinetic movie of Bond series.

5-0 out of 5 stars THUNDERBALL = Best Bond Movie
This movie is Awesome. The story is the best and score is fantastic. Sean Connery gives one of his best performances as James Bond along with everyone else in the film. This is truly one of my favourite movies ever and I've only become a mega fan this past year. Make your life better and get this along with every other James Bond film!

3-0 out of 5 stars borderline classic, borderline franchise popcorn
this is the pivotal bond film because it has enough of the same qualitites that rank it nearly alongside dr no, from russia with love and goldfinger.
but, it also has enough hints of the rot that is you only live twice and diamonds are forever that follows.
the first three bond films can actually be considered good films period and not necessarily 'franchise films'.
thunderball truly is the beginning of the franchise that will become furmulaic popcorn with the next one and that was too bad,
and connery, wisely, knew this himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC !!
This film is extremely funny and should be praised as one of Abbott and Costello's best films! Some other nice scenes include guitar entertainers Les Paul and Mary Ford, who are somewhat comical also! Some other interesting things are the old fashioned TV commercials that might make you laugh a little bit!! Classic acrobats on bars do their dazzling jobs to also make the audience somewhat dizzy in the process! One of the comedy duo's funniest scenes is when Costello gives his friend a mistaken scalp treatment and boils his hair right off! One other different scene in the film is when a snake charmer at a nightclub makes a girl in a snake costume slither and bend like a pro snake on the run! This is an entertaining movie, all in all! But,what I do not understand is why nobody reviewed this timeless Comedy Hour, but forget about that and rent or buy this fascinating picture to cheer yourself up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated Sequel
INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU from 1968 with Alan Arkin as Clouseau is a highly underrated effort from director Bud Yorkin. I found this film very entertaining and uproariously funny. Alan Arkin's interpretation of Clouseau is quite different from the popular version established by Peter Sellers in the two previous films: THE PINK PANTHER and A SHOT IN THE DARK. Alan Arkin curiously represents Clouseau as the thinking man's bumbling inspector. The scene with Arkin and Patrick Cargill in Cargill's office as they continuously exchange different chairs during the briefing is brilliantly conceived and must truly be seen in widescreen to be fully appreciated. I laugh aloud every time I watch it. Another funny scene is when Clouseau tries to disembark from the plane at the airport missing his shoes and umbrella. One of the highlights of the film is Ken Thorne's outstanding score. Ken Thorne is one of the most underrated composers in the history of cinema. In all, I truly enjoy this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect installment for a pink panther fan
This is a real good movie despite the fact Peter Sellers isn't in it. Alan Arkin does an excellent job of portraying the character of Inspector Clouseau. Alan Arkin uses the same accent and physical humor as Peter Sellers did.The movie is filled with hilarios scenes and of course begins with a humorous cartoon short. If you are a Pink Panther fan I suggest for you to buy a copy today.

2-0 out of 5 stars Passable, dated 1960s comedy
I first saw this movie many years ago on late night television. It looks like it was done on a much more modest budget than any of the Blake Edwards films. Despite the Clouseau character, this isn't nearly as madcap as it should have been, and often comes across as a made-for-TV 60s comedy. Alan Arkin's done much better work than this and to his credit does his best to make the character his own rather than an impersonation. Die-hard fans of the series will probably want to see this movie for the sake of completeness. But without Peter Sellers, Blake Edwards and Henry Mancini is there any reason to have a Pink Panther movie?

2-0 out of 5 stars And now for something not so different after all
I overcame my reservations about this movie because, well, it has Alan Arkin. He's funny, right?

Well not in this thing, though you can tell that he's trying, but he's dealing with lousy direction, a horrible script, and he's trying to play a character that has been definitively played by one of the comic geniuses of the century.

The plot, as feeble as can be expected for the genre, would actually have some interesting potential if it could have exploited today's digital technology. Imagine a dozen Clouseau's bumping into each other as they all accidentally rob the same bank.

I haven't seen the other Clouseau flicks recently enough to remember if they all were like this, but this G-rated flick had enough gay innuendo to almost consider that this was brilliantly hidden subversive material. Somehow, though, I doubt it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspector Cleoseau
I own every other movie in the Pink Panther sereis, that is the reason I would like to own this video if possible, when the video comes back into stock, and if I or if I don't win A certifcate I would like to buy the video. I thank you for having the video, and for your time. Christopher Stone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bitter-sweet story
There was a time when I longed to see another Zhang Yimou film. His greatest films, "Raise the Red Lantern," "Shanghai Triad," "Ju-dou," and "Red Sorghum" are--without a doubt--some of the richest cinematic experiences--and I'll stress the word "experiences" that I've EVER had.

But something happened to Zhang Yimou, and his artistry--as perhaps one of the greatest directors of all time--waned. Was it perhaps because he lost his muse, Gong Li, star of "Shanghai Triad" and "Raise the Red Lantern"? Many professional reviewers speculate that Gong Li's departure is the cause for Yimou's artistic slump, but regardless of the cause, Yimou seems to be on the rise again with this film "Happy Times."

Zhao (Bensahn Zhao), an unemployed, middle-aged lonely factory worker longs for a wife. After being jilted 18 times, he decides to marry an unpleasant, domineering divorcee. While friends scoff at photographs of Zhao's large new fiancee, Zhao defends her rubenesque proportions by stating that the other 18 women left him because they were skinny, and as this fiancee is far from skinny, Zhao believes she will stay put and marry him.

Zhao, in order to impress the divorcee, brags that as the manager of the "Happy Times" hotel, he is fairly well-to-do. Problems develop when the divorcee contends that they need 50,000 yen in order to get married in style, and this is when Zhao starts to involve his friends in his relationship. Acting on the advice of his best friend (who also has no money), Zhao refurbishes an abandoned bus as a romantic retreat for lovers with the idea that the lovers will pay for their privacy.

The divorcee, who really is a most unpleasant character, decides that the non-existent "Happy Times" hotel would be the perfect place to dump her unwanted blind step-daughter, Ying, and before Zhao realizes it, he is responsible for the neglected, frail blind teenage girl. Zhao's faulty logic, accompanied by his unrelenting desire to please and placate his nasty fiancee lead to further fabrications and eventually to disaster.

The title of the DVD, "Happy Times," is ironic--just as the "Happy Times" hotel does not exist, there are also really no "happy times" for any of the characters in this film. Happiness remains elusive--or exists in the imagination, at best. Zhao's make-believe hotel--a metaphor for life--is really only a gutted, abandoned bus that serves as a tacky love nest. Similarly, happy times for Zhao and Ying are elusive and fleeting moments spent eating an ice cream, and describing the colours and patterns in a dress. There is no lasting happiness in reality, and yet indulging in fabrications and make-believe ultimately also brings unhappiness to those who indulge in fantasies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart rending
My university's east asian cultures department is showing an east asian movie every friday for a month and this was the first one shown. I finished watching this movie a little over an hour ago, and it still is affecting me.

It is about a lonely man named Zhao who is trying for the 18th time to get the perfect wife who he thinks he has found in quite a large woman with an obnoxious son, and a blind step daughter. Zhao tells the woman that he owns a hotel and that he has the money pouring in. What he has in fact is an old bus that young couples frequent to make out in.

The woman hates her step daughter and dumps the girl on Zhao. In order to keep up his appearance as a wealthy man he builds a fake massage parlor along with a group of his friends who are also out of work. The girl Mu(?) is happy working with Zhao, but of course things don't stay that way.

I loved themain character Zhao from the instant he appeared on the screen he is just a very likeable guy. But one does feel pretty bad for the yung girl who is not wanted by her step mother or her father. She finds olace with a middle age man who keeps her just to put up appearnces. The ending will leave you in tears once you see how Zhao and the girl's relationship grows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
-

I've long been a film buff - my favorite films tend to be artsy and rather pedantic. Because of this, my family generally doesn't like to sit with me and watch movies.

So, when I started "Happy Times" last night, I thought they'd gradually wander off and find something else to do.

But, they were enthralled! This movie is the perfect balancing act between comedy, drama, and the enduring love we feel for those who have touched us in a special way.

This is a great, great movie.

Too many Americans shun foreign films. This is one they shouldn't miss. When the movie ended, my oldest son turned to me and said, "Wow. I think Hollywood has forgotten how to make movies like this!"

American filmmakers seem to think they have to descend to the baser instincts in order to make "adult" movies.

Yet, "Happy Times" - and countless other foreign films - never seem to sink to this level. These films are always excellent.

I think the issue is that Hollywood has forgotten how to write a good story; they've forgotten that basic human values can be enduring, can be entertaining, if only they would jettison their cynical baggage.

"Happy Times" will make you laugh and cry, smile and reflect with pride on the better angels of our nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT IS MY FAVOR
I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SAY,BUT IT IS REALLY GOOD,I LIKE IT VERY MUCH

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy viewing, at least.
Zhang Yimou's ironically titled *Happy Times* is really a remarkable tightrope act: it offers us some very sappy melodrama while commenting on its own artifices, and gets away with it like a charming thief. Get a load of this plot. . . . A fat divorcee with two teenagers -- her own boy and a blind, unwanted step-daughter left behind by her ex-husband -- gets involved with an unemployed proletarian named Zhao. Zhao, depressed, broke, and lonely, claims he's a big-shot hotelier in order to impress the divorcee, who turns out to be very hard to impress. Hence, Zhao's lies -- as one might expect -- become more grandiose and difficult to sustain, especially after the divorcee dumps the unwanted blind girl onto his doorstep. "I'm sure you can find SOME work for her at your fancy hotel!" the woman declares. Zhao hits upon the idea of hiring the girl as a masseuse for the imaginary hotel's wealthy guests. But how is he going to pull THIS off? Desperately, he lets the girl stay in his shabby apartment, which he claims is a "worker's apartment" -- his OWN place, of course, is some unspecified mansion elsewhere. Of course, by now he's forced to get his fellow-unemployed friends in on the act: they pose as the wealthy guests and receive massages from the girl in a decrepit factory that they have hastily dressed up as a massage parlor at the "hotel". Once these jobless pensioners run out of real disposable income, they tip her with rectangular cuttings from brown paper bags instead of money. This all sounds very cruel, I know, but just watch the movie: Zhao and his friends come to feel a deep fondness for the poor wretch, who -- you guessed it -- just wants to find her father somewhere in Beijing so that he can pay for a procedure to cure her blindness. This whole set-up -- poor man, blind girl, and their unlikely friendship -- could so easily slide down toward appalling sentimentality. But Zhang Yimou avoids that by making his characters well-rounded: selfish one minute, solicitous the next; hopeful one minute, suicidal the next; comic one minute, tragic the next. The story requires an artist to negotiate the narrative through the pitfalls of cliches that would otherwise sink it. But then, there aren't too many directors equal to Zhang Yimou's artistry, anyway. And here's a tip to the filmmakers out there: don't mistake the manipulative plot devices in *Happy Times* for universal situations. This is a story that could only happen in China. Therefore, no "loose remakes", please. Leave it alone. ... Read more

This movie is fantastic. George Burns plays the part of lonely old man waiting to die, until his grandson, a 21 y/o who is mentally handicapped, teaches him that he has something to live for. Nollie (the boy) is torn apart by his parents: his father thinks he should grow up and be a man, and his mother wants him to stay a boy forever. When Nollie's mother decides to leave her husband and move away, Nollie steals her car and takes out his grandfather. It's wonderful, trust me.

Pokemon has still got it. Digimon beware! Pokemon still has the legue.

1-0 out of 5 stars ENOUGH!
Pokemon's dead. It's pathetic. It used to be the height of pop-culture, it was everywhere. Didn't they get enough money from back then, or do they need to keep milking it from what little people still like it? Keep it in Japan.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good collection of episodes
Here we go. Another collection of episodes from the fourth season of Pokémon, randomly picked. Don't let this put you off! There's three very good episodes on this tape, which is entitled "Big Air".

1. Current Events
Although this episode does have an impact on the main storyline of the show, it is not neccessarily the best on the video. It involves Ash and Chikorita getting locked in a power plant. While trying to escape, they must avoid the Electabuzz and Electrode that patrol the corridors aswell as Team Rocket. At the end of the episode one of Ash's Pokémon evolves - I won't spoil it by saying who. 7/10.
2. The Big Balloon Blow-Up
In this filler, Ash and co. meet up with a young boy, whose father makes hot air balloons. They end up entering a madcap, fast-paced balloon race. Unfortunately, Team Rocket wants the first prize for themselves and also enter! Probably the best on the tape, this one get better after repeated viewing. 8/10.
3. Right On Rhydon
In our final (filler) adventure, our heroes meet up with a girl who is trying to capture a surfing Rhydon. As strange as it sounds, this is an episode worth seeing. It includes the hilarious scene when Team Rocket recite their motto with their mouths full! 7.5/10.

This collection is well worth buying, as it contains some of the better season 4 episodes. Even if you looking for an introduction to the Pokémon animé, this tape is perfect as the storyline isn't that hard to pick up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sequel To The 1981 Hit Comedy.
Arthur 2 On The Rocks is an underrated sequel to the original. To me...I thought that this one was in fact better then the original, because it had a very good screenplay and great sense of humor...not just the drinking jokes from the original, but much more situatiuon comedy, which the original lacked. Plus, this one has a much more complex and smooth plot, that wasn't as confusing as it worked with the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Rocks...Rocks
On The Rocks is a delightful experience. Young millionaire playboy learns that there is more to life than money. A hilarious sequel to Arther, Number 2 is even better. Much more down to earth comedy, with a sober twist. Thanks Dudley, you've done it again!

4-0 out of 5 stars not so great as the first one, but still a good movie
This movie , altough is not a masterpiece like the first Arthur, is still a good entertainment. The carachters are so charming that you can enjoy a sequel, even a pollitically correct like this one(arthur trying to quit drinking). There's also a new theme song by christopher cross.Watch it and judge yourserlf.

1-0 out of 5 stars They should outlaw test-bombing
This movie was a total bomb; it was a failure in all cinematic categories. All the major players from the first movie save one (Jill Eikenberry who played Susan) return to star in this one, but whatever they did wasn't enough to save the picture. Sometimes, the best things you do are the things you don't do; this film is a prime example of that situation.

2-0 out of 5 stars A mistake
This was a movie that should not have been made. Arthur's behavior in the first flick was amusing. Here it becomes increasingly tiresome, and you begin to question his wife's sanity at putting up with it. The cast tries (Liza looks great), and it's lushly produced, but they should have better left alone. Gielgud is wasted, although he does get the film's best line. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only For Arnold Vosloo
I have to say that I am a latecomer to Vosloo. I recently (YES I KNOW) saw The Mummy and The Mummy Returns on tv and was struck by the Character who played Imhotep. I was amazed at his screen presence and wanted to know more about him. I purchased this video to find out what he did before his big break.

This movie starts out with a wonderful (and I do mean wonderful) view of Arnold's posterior (I'm quivering and blushing as I type). I immediately hit the rewind button for another view of 'The Vos'. He is making love to his wife when something strange happens. Vosloo (An ER Doctor) tells his therapists that his and his wife's memory of that night is a bit hazy. Through hypnosis they both remember--that aliens impregnated her! Vos teams up with an alien abduction expert to save his(uncooperative)wife before it is to late.
Cast includes Craig Burton (Arnold Vosloo), his wife Sherry (Jillian McWhirter) and alien abuction expert Bert Clavell (Brad Dourif).
This is a B movie with a B storyline, but Vosloo fans (myself included) should not be disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars a colossal waste of time
What the hell is wrong with all you people! this was the biggest waste of tape i have ever seen. not only did they cheat us out of plot, they cheated us on gore. Amazon is selling this giant turd of film for $103.99. Who would buy "Progeny," a retarded attempt at sci-fi...or is it horror....or is it a sappy romance with soap opera-like actors....whatever it is Brian Yuzna can shove it up his pootie tang. don't rent it and sure as hell don't buy it. i will now cry tears of sorrow for my two dollars...

4-0 out of 5 stars Stuart Gordon Creates Another Thriller
Considering that this is by Stuart "Re-Animator" Gordon, it bears a much closer resemblance to Dagon than Re-Animator is atmosphere and style.

A doctor and his wife are trying to have a baby. One night they are interrupted by a bright light and they discover that two hours have gone by. The husband is bothered by this but really freaks out when a bright light flashed in his eyes causes him to space out for a few minutes. His wife is now pregnant.

Hypnosis and seeing a TV spot about alien abduction gets him thinking.

The film progresses nicely as the doctor becomes more and more convinced that there is something wrong with the baby his wife is carrying. One of the great things about this film is that you are kept guessing as to whether he is crazy or not.

This is much more of a psychological thriller than a gore fest, so those looking for the gore may be disappointed (there is a little), but those looking for a film with actual creepiness will find a tasty treat with this one.

One other note, you might notice that the husband is almost always on screen (he does an excellent job).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Better than Re-Animator"
If I could give this film 6 stars, I would. This movie is OUTSTANDING!!! It's from the same guy who directed Re-Animator, Brian Yuzna. A married couple happily await the arrival of their first child, but little do they know the nightmare that awaits... Great special FX, interesting plot, & A++ acting. This film has been one of the most slept on horror movies in the past couple of decades. It's a classic, up their with "The Exorcist," "American Werewolf in London," & "Dawn of the Dead." If you don't have this movie already, GET IT!! It will be OOP very soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Above Average.
"Progeny" is one of Horror Meister Yuzna's less gory attempts which includes some fine special effects but a weak plot. The actors do a great job, especially Brad Dourif. Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy& The Mummy Returns) is Craig Barton, the surgeon who is sure that his wife Sherry (Jillian McWhirter) has been impregnated by evil aliens. The movie does have a few surprises and carries out an uncanny mood. Recommended for strong horror buffs. ... Read more

Perhaps many people won't get it, but this movie is well worth the watching no matter by whom, a lesson for those who can think, and real entertainment for those who will not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem of an Enigmatic Movie.
I saw this film many years ago, rented only on a whim and it has haunted me ever since. It is not a film so much as a real work of art. Its characters, backdrops, contrasts, and poetic artistry of writing and filmography make me sad that it has not received more commercial acclaim yet I have great satisfaction of having it as one of my secret discoveries. I watch this film over and over again and have shown it to friends and it always touches off many emotions and stirs alot of discussion. All I can say is that if you see this movies you will not regret it. The writing, the complex characters, and the exotic backdrop of Hong Kong make for one helluva good film and this movie delivers BIG TIME! If you love movies then this is a MUST to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it
I can say it purely and simply ....
I love this film.... I really and truly Love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Justified Cult Following - Fantastic Film
This film is a nearly unknown gem. It successfully captures the exotic feeling of Hong Kong, with its fortune tellers, ancient trees and ultramodern highrises, all set against the hum of commerce. John Lone plays the protagonist, a former member of the Red Guard who illegally enters Hong Kong (with only the clothes on his body) after Mao's death. The film then shifts to a time several years later, during the 1989 student demonstrations, and people are forced to consider what the coming 1997 takeover will really be like. By this time, Lone's character is a highly regarded, well known, wealthy businessman. Until some stunning rumours about his parentage surface.
Even with all of that information, you cannot predict how this film will end or much of anything that happens along the way. Self examination, the ability to remake oneself, the value of loyalty and youthful friendships, race and nationality are all themes, and all are examined subtly well. The story is something that could come from Hemingway, but far less somber. The final two minutes or so are just amazing. I wish they'd release it on DVD, and that the soundtrack (which is very moody and ethereal) was available in the States. You won't regret getting this video for a minute, and my bet is that you'll watch it many, many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars A man of success looks back on his own humble roots.
It is a pure artistic film. It is filmed in the heights of Asian economies. A man of success in every single facet of the material world looks back on his own humble roots with mixed feelings. Instead of saying "who am I???" in verbatim, the whole film depicts life as a "dream-like-state" in pictorial. This is a story about city mid-aged crisis: a self-exploration of his self in the past versus the present success and wealth of his responsibility -- and also, the compromise and non-compromise of both. A first class international production "backs" the Japanese director in every single detail to explore the ultimate meaning of life: the search of one's own "existential self", a universal theme painted in a sensuous Japanese melody. The whole story flows in the mind of the director like a piece of silky cloth in a tempest-tossed sea, disquietingly. Artists John Lone and Sammi Davies have succesfully depicted all emotions necessary of a mid-aged crisis between love and dilemma of all. A must-see film for rentals in a quiet Saturday night. (Commented by Production Assistant of this film.)

3-0 out of 5 stars No Ranger retires perpendicular
Nasty and corrupt Mayor Nard Lundy (Edward Andrews) is challenged by idealistic Jeff Rose (Ricky Nelson) in an upcoming election. Lundy has Sheriff Clyde Barnes (Jack Elam) rough the young upstart up some. Rose's visiting father-in-law, retired Texas Ranger Captain Oren Hayes (Pat O'Brien) sends an urgent telegraph to three of his former command (Walter Brennan, Chill Wills and Edgar Buchanan) to come to Boulder immediately and help him clean up the town.
THE OVER-THE-HILL GANG is a 1969 made-for-television movie that was popular enough at the time to lead to a sequel a year later. For old movie fans it's hard to beat the appeal of this veteran character actor laden movie. It's fun to see them play off each other and confront a situation that their advancing years have forced them to deal with more with guile than brute force. What's not so much fun is seeing them saddled with this tired, predictable plot.
Brennan and Buchanan shine brightest in this one; Brennan as the gun slinger who's lost a bit of speed on his quick draw and Buchanan as the scout who's eyesight has deteriorated to the point that he's drawing his guns on stuffed and mounted bears. With a better script, and a more delicate and penetrating examination of what it feels like to suddenly find yourself old and in the way, this one could have been a classic for the ages rather than an amusing piece of fluff.
The print transfer to dvd is so-so. Some of the night scenes are muddy and it's hard to make out what's happening. The dvd also comes with the Little Rascals' short "Hooky Spooky."
Fans of old movies should enjoy the veteran character actors in this, although they may agree that the folks in front of the camera in THE OVER-THE-HILL GANG deserved far better.

3-0 out of 5 stars One more chance to see some ol' western stars
The technical part of this review refers to the Brentwood Home Video or BCI Eclipse version.

From the Aaron Spelling stable of TV movies comes this tale with Ricky Nelson (and his wife Kris Nelson) as an idealistic couple. Ricky is running for Mayor of a small western town against Edward Andrews who plays a corrupt town boss. Jack Elam is his Sheriff and Andy Devine is his Judge, both firmly entrenched in his back pocket.

Pat O'Brien comes to town as Ricky Nelson's father-in-law, a retired Texas Ranger who rounds up his old partners (Walter Brennan, Edgar Buchanan and Chill Wills)!!! Throw in Gypsy Rose Lee as the owner of the local saloon and you got yourself a pretty good (for TV) rip-snorting western. You know how it's going to play out, but watching the all these stars in action makes up for a sub-par script.

Unfortunately the transfer is from a well-used print that looks like it was recorded in long play mode. At times, scenes taking place at night are almost unwatchable. But the chance to see these stars of westerns in their later years is a treat you should not miss if you're a fan of the western genre.

Brentwood/BCI put in their usual extras, six chapter stops, a DVD dictionary, trivia game and a short subject (Hal Roach's "Little Rascals"). This movie is also in a 10 pack of westerns at about triple the price for this one film from Brentwood Home Video called "The Wild West" and is available from Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Animes Ever!
I love Anime. I bought this DVD version for one reason and one reason alone. So that I would not have to watch or listen to the dubbed version. I cannot stand the English dubbing. My advise to anyone watching a foriegn film; watch it in its original language, no one else can do the characters justice. That is my opinion.

Anyways, that matter aside, let's talk about the movie.
Yes, it has extremely graphic violence, but it states that on the DVD. (Contains brief nudity and Graphic Violence, Parental Discretion Advised). Gore is not what this anime is about. There is actually a great historical storyline interwoven within all its action and suspense.

3 Ninjas from different clans unite to ward off Evil. Each Ninja with their own special sword, come together as one. Evil is rampant, Lord Nobunaga Oda with his evil intentions sends out all his evil artillery to smash the Ninjas and thier allies. His goal, to spread evil and demons throughout the land.

Ayame, is a young girl who sees her life and family shattered before her innocent eyes, yet she is helpless to do anything. Vengeance becomes her lifelong obsession. Ryoma, a Ninja from a neighboring clan, kindhearted and sweet is her companion and ally. And of course, Sakon (my favorite guy) is the Ninja who can feel the treachery of those around him, and sees the battles and evil as never ending.

I will not say anymore, but I seriously recommend this movie. Take my advise and watch this great animated movie. I has everything, including Love.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible Reincarnation
This movie is very poorly done. And I'm not just talking about the anime itself, I'm talking about how they took the OVA series (300+ minutes) of this and cut it down into a movie (87 minutes). I'm glad this doesn't happen to all anime series, that would be for shame.

The movie itself isn't that bad, its just I cannot give this DVD, nor any butchered version of the OVA series a good rating. The series features 3 ninjas fighting against Nobunaga Oda (an evil ruler at one time in Japan's history) as they try and stop his attempts to take over the world. The movie is kind of a beast/ninja movie which would fare over well for some viewers, but it failed to capture my interest.

With all of my personal opinons aside, the DVD itself does include some good extras. With deleted scenes being the key extras on the disc, it also has a "meet the cast" option as well with the traditional U.S. MANGA "DVD Sneak Peaks".

Overall, I'm sad that this could-be great anime was delivered in such a poor way. If you can overlook the fact that you won't be seeing the entire movie no matter what when you buy the DVD (even if they give you 2-3 deleted scenes), then you should probably pick this up. Also, if you are a fan of the ninja/demon beast genre it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Loved it!!
Great anime! Awesome action scenes! the story is kinda slow at first and the stroyline is a bit shallow, but it gets best towards the end. has a lot of sad parts, but is totally worth seeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second only to Ninja Scroll
Ninja Scroll is the best ninja movie to come out. Wrath of the Ninja is great for any Ninja Scroll fan. The movie has excellent characters and the story is great. Pick up this great title NOW!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible

1-0 out of 5 stars Holy Crap!
I wish they had a space for negative stars, this movie sucks so bad it is painful. Not just a little bit painful either. It's like seeing a hero's funeral.I would rather get a punch in the eye than to ever have to watch this movie again.Darn you Jim Carey...Darn you for ever subjecting the world to such horror. After watching this movie, I think it is a miracle from God that anyone ever gave you a second chance to redeem yourself. You should thank God every day that you got a second chance.Oh yeah and the next time you get twenty million bucks for making a movie, please try to buy every copy of this movie in existance....please. Thank You

2-0 out of 5 stars Rubberface... An indebth look at a social masterpiece
Ok so my title may have been misleading... but so is the cover of this video. "JIM CARREY...IS RUBBERFACE" in actuallity Jim was just a secondary character. I bought this because I live in Perth Western Australia and this movie was never released here. I got a few cheap laughs but was dissapointed by two things...
1) Jim Carrey was hardly in this and despite the title of the film "Rubberface" he actually doesn't pull any of his famous wacky faces in this film.
2) The main Character and Jim tease getting together romantically through every scene they are in and nothing actually happened.
not the worst film ever and a definite watch for die hard fans of Jims work wanting to see where he started out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big J!!!! can't help but laugh.
I understand this was a student film, but why is it still available, and why can you buy it almost anywhere, including TARGET!? The only parts that are laugh-inducing are the parts that aren't supposed to be funny: like when Big J (good God, why did the girl let people call her Big J like it was her name?) reveals that her plans for the night involve her hanging out with her Sony. It's supposed to be sad but it's just funny and then you feel bad for laughing at her. Big J can't help being so dorky. She hangs out with her boombox for Christ's sake. That is, until Jim Carry comes along. He becomes her supporter when she goes to comedy clubs to "perform", but she's not funny. Jim laughs anyway. Way too cheesy. It's so horrible that my brother and I try to get people to rent it, and we tell them that it's the funniest movie we've ever seen....

1-0 out of 5 stars I want 48 minutes of my life back
This could quite possibly have been the worst movie i've ever seen in my entire existence! First off...Jim Carrey should do everything in his power to have this movie no longer releaseed or accessable to the public.(animals included) This movie can be rented in the comedy section of a video store...it shouldn't be there. The only laughs I had were me and other people laughing at me for my selection of a wasted night watching this movie. Sure you may come back and say it was a student film...but honestly, where the hell could he or she be a student at!! Who would accept someone with such lack of talent and creativity. Sure the girl was Fat...nbut that wasn't here main problem. The acted like an idiot all the time and then ALLOWED people to call her BIG J!! This is a complex written all over it. This is BIG J calling was always followed by some cheap Yogi Bear impresion...once again retaining back to the fact that she's fat and her rolemodel was a picnic basket stealing bear. Jim Carey didn't even entered this movie untill about 20 or so minutes into it. And just furtherd this movies down-hill spiral we call a waste of film. I was not impressed and don't recommend this waste o time, film, and brain cells to anyone thing. Even if no one is watching this movie in your house, Please don't leave it on in an empty living room where some small child or housepet could stumble blindly into the path of idiotic rays being dispersed from the TV screen. MY CAT DIED, WHILE VIEWING THIS FILM. please heed my warning.

Descent movie, but nowhere near the standards of quality Jim Carry material. Most of our time is spent on speculating the teenage troubles of a young girl. Rubber Face is nothing but a late 70's ammateur film that happened to feature Jim Carry midway through the movie. I appreciate the film's heart, set with the main charactor's cute but trutheful phylosophy. There are a couple of short comedy bits that deliver quality laughs, but all in all, the movie is more sentimental then it is humorous. I enjoyed the film's innocent taste, as well as the actors' simplistic yet soothing portrayal of teenage confusion. Seeing the movie, you wonder why such a bad script can deliver even the slightest touch of emotion. This effect is due to the film's fresh acting, especially Jim Carry's role in playing an unimployed comedian who attempts to enlighten the main charactor through his humour.

I admire the film for its simplistic story-line set under a light tone. The picture quality was pretty bad, but what else do you expect from a student film? The cinematography is moderate, the sound is reasonably clear, even the scenes appear professionally synchronized. Like a satisfying appetizer, this movie is refreshing as it is delightful. However, if you have a soft spot for Jim Carry, I suggest viewing his later features, such as Ace Ventura and The Mask.

Do not be fooled by the cover, this is no Jim Carry "knock-out", but the pleasant premises makes up for it. Buy it for easy, quick enjoyment (as well a glimpse of the "softer" side of Jim Carry). Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bullitt Hits The Mark
1968's Bullitt is best known for its classic car chase scene that is still considered by many to the best of all time. The movie is worth watching for that scene alone as Steve McQueen's fastback Mustang chases down a Dodge Charger for a tense ten minutes through the streets of San Francisco. Even without that memorable scene, Bullitt is a classic 60's film. Mr. McQueen's performance as steely police detective Frank Bullitt is one of his best and the forerunner of the anti-heroes that would dominate films of the 70's. The plot revolves around a seemingly routine job for Bullitt and his men to protect a mob informant (Pat Renella) who is set to testify before a Senate subcommittee. When two hitmen break into the safe house and fatally wound the informant and injury another detective, Bullitt begins to have questions and takes up investigating the case on his own with the help of fellow detective Delgetti (Don Gordon). Fighting them at every turn is ruthless and ambitious senator Chalmers played with unctuous smarm by Robert Vaughan. Jacqueline Bissett co-stars in one of her first roles as Bullitt's girlfriend and Robert Duvall has a bit part as a cabbie. Director Peter Yates crafts a gritty look to the film and editor Frank Keller won the Academy Award for his superb work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve McQueen scorches the streets of San Francisco
Arguably the best crime film of 1968, and certainly one of the most influential films of the genre...."Bullitt" established new directions in the mood and style of crime thrillers, and firmly established McQueen as one of the key anti-hero stars of the 60's. Based on the gritty novel "Mute Witness" by Robert L. Pike, this was the first, and only, time McQueen portrayed a police officer (albeit a maverick one) in his movie career. In 1968 Steve was then riding high on the success of his previous crime film, "The Thomas Crown Affair", and "Bullitt" just propelled his star even higher into the heavens !

The plot is tight, economical and well crafted....taciturn, moody Detective Frank Bullitt (McQueen) is charged with the protection of a key witness vital to an upcoming trial involving Mafia connections. Whilst hidden away in a supposed secure location, the witness and his police guard are brutally gunned down by unknown assailants. The heat is turned up on Bullitt by his tough Captain (Simon Oakland) and the manipulative, opportunistic politician Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) to come up with the right answers fast ! Between the draining investigation, Bullitt struggles to maintain his relationship with his cultured, sensitive girlfriend, Cathy (Jacqueline Bisset)

Primarily coming from a TV series background, Englishman Peter Yates (directing his fourth movie) did a commendable job as director on "Bullitt"...producing a complex, intense crime thriller with a unique style that would ultimately influence many other films. Yates would later to go onto direct Robert Mitchum in the excellent "sleeper" crime film "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" !

And of course "Bullitt" is reknowned for it's now legendary car chase between Frank Bullitt's 390 GT Mustang and the two hitmen in their black, Dodge Charger 440 Magnum barrelling through the city streets and highways of San Francisco....just don't pay too much attention to how many times they pass that slow-moving, green VW Beetle !!

The DVD transfer is excellent in both sound and picture quality, and the Limited Edition Set with the extra goodies (Single sheet poster, shooting draft, lobby cards etc.) is a real bonus for keen film fans !!

One of my favourite cop thrillers....McQueen sizzles on screen !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Put on a Sweater
This detective drama aimed to be the essence of cool, and succeeded, in fact it's a little too cool, can somebody turn up the thermostat? Barely anybody in the picture is allowed to show any genuine emotion, although one of the hoods looks a little upset before he's shotgunned. Director Peter Yates apparently planned to tell the whole story with action and came up with a near-classic. In fact his spectacular staging of McQueen's car pursuit of two Mob assassins is usually blamed for the countless imitation car chases that have blighted American movies ever since. It's certainly one of McQueen's signature roles, but why give him a hokey name like Bullitt?

5-0 out of 5 stars McQUEEN COOL!
Ignore the paisley pajamas, Steve McQueen was an icon of cool and BULLITT is the proof. Peter Yates has a smart thinking man's cop drama, bolstered by (yes) the best chase scene on film. Great locations in San Francisco. Superior acting by McQueen, Robert Vaughn as a sinister U.S. Senator and Don Gordon, as McQueen's partner. Why didn't Don Gordon become a bigger star?

3-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the pretty
"Bullitt" is highly regarded by many for either "the chase", or the drama.

The good and the bad: True, there is a high-speed car chase in part through the hilly streets of San Francisco. Is it "the best ever" chase? Depends on how you look at it. Plus - It was very high speed. Plus - It had a cool-looking Mustang fastback vs a big GTO. Negative - They pass the same VW 4 times, and another car 2 times (why? if not intentional, then very poor continuity) Negative - double-shifting or not, there are about 97 t
