3-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie! Good Movie! But I'm upset!
Richard Pryor did a great job in this movie! It was so funny and he sing like on Wizrd of oz "there was no place like home" He did a great job and I watch it over and over! I'm upset cuz they didn't make on DVD! I want them to make it on DVD's!
I gave them 3 star cuz they didn't make on DVD's! Please make it cuz I am Richard Pryor Fans! This is a good movie for making on DVD's.

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is timeless
Having experienced a variation of nearly every pitfall which Richard Pryor encounters during this hilarious film, I had tears in my eyes watching it happen to someone else. A character not to be overlooked is Dana Carvey who brings even more laughs to this side-splitting cult classic. Though this movie never made it in the "main stream", it remains one of my favorites and I suggest it to all of my friends. It's difficult these days to find a film most have not seen. They are surprised and delighted to find that this one shoud not have been overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD SIMPLE FUN COMEDY
The Toy is a great movie from an all time legend Richard Pryor.
O.K. its not in the top ten of all time comedys and the first 15 minutes is a bit slow, but if you are like me and my family who go on the feel good factor instead of "ACTORBILITY" and all that crap then you will love this film.
A classic comedy with good values, what more can i say!

1-0 out of 5 stars I will rate this movie higher when its finally put on DVD
Why hasnt this great comedy been put onto DVD yet? Did the people converting movies from the reels pack up and leave, and this was one of the films that they said "where taking it with us"?

Come on, this a 4 to 5 star comedy , when is coming out on DVD? Treat great comedys with respect. And this is certinly one of Richard Pryors best.... TO DVD, NOW

4-0 out of 5 stars A Funny Movie!
This movie was pretty silly but it was funny and enjoyable and Richard Pryor was very good as the father of a family who have to move to another state and the scenes with him and the teenage daughter who doesn't want to move are very funny and I recommend this movie and hope it will someday be put on DVD! ... Amazon.com essential video

When a Man Loves a Woman is a dumb title (not another classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. A kind of gender-switch take on The Lost Weekend, it's about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but When a Man Loves a Woman is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing. That's because the film is grounded in the actual experience of co-writer Al Franken (assisted by Rain Man scripter Ronald Bass). Franken is best known for his affiliation with Saturday Night Live and Politically Incorrect, and as the author of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations. You may recall that Franken is the creator of Stuart Smalley, 12-step programmer extraordinaire. Well, if you want to know how Stuart was born, you can start here. This is no comedy, however. In fact, one of the most painful realizations comes when attractive, "good-time girl" Alice Green (Ryan) and her husband (Andy Garcia) begin to realize how much of a role alcohol played in their marriage and in bringing them together in the first place. The issues and experiences confronted in this movie go far beyond the stuff you see on Oprah. --Jim Emerson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
Coming from an alcoholic family I was able to relate to the children in the movie. I think Meg Ryan played the part perfectly and Andy Garcia did a wonderful job as well. It was a different look at a serious disease, the fact that the mother was an alcoholic.

Meg Ryan (Alice Green) plays a wife and mother of two, who has an out of control drinking problem, that takes her almost dying in the shower to make her realize that she has a problem. Andy Garcia (Michael Green) plays her husband who knows that she has a problem, but just is not ready to face the fact that she needs help or she is going to hurt herself or one of the children.

When Alice finally does get the help she needs, Michael doesn't cope well with the fact that she now has other people to turn to when things get rough. Michael does try to go to a support meeting for family memebers, but just sees it as a bunch of people sitting around feeling sorry for each other. He thinks that things will just 'go back to normal' now that she has gotten help and just isn't that simple.

Although the effects that her drinking had on the kids was not addressed, I felt that it touched most of the bases that a family goes through after recovery.

You will need a box of tissues by your side for this tear jerker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting movie about the effects of alcoholism
When I first saw the title of this movie, I was thinking that this was going to be a romantic comedy. But, to my surprise, it was so much more.

Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia are good as Alice and Michael Green. I liked the fact that the movie dealt with Alice's alcoholism. She realizes that she has a major problem with alcohol. Eventually, she goes into rehabilitation.

I'm glad that they didn't stop the movie with her coming out of rehab and life will be all wonderful and fuzzy. What happens is that with Alice sober, Michael doesn't have anyone to rescue anymore. It is good to watch how their relationship changes with Alice's new found sobriety. Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia do a great job in showing how alcoholism can effectively mess up a relationship and family.

It's been a while since I have seen this movie, but there are some wonderful supporting performances to mention. Tina Majorino as the oldest daughter, Jess, is astonishing. She shows a lot of emotion for the daughter of an alcoholic. I think that she could have easily been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Also, Lauren Tom as Amy, the Green's nanny/housekeeper, is incredible. Her character does not really like Michael Green very much. The scene where Michael begs her to come back and help the family is great. Amy definitely does not make it easy for him.

This movie is definitely not light-hearted fair. In fact, I would really not recommend this for children. But, for adults, I recommend this movie because it tackles alcoholism head on, especially with some not so pleasant views of Alice's alcoholism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad and Real. Finally a good portrayal.
No film has shown the damage that alcoholism does to someone in this way. Nobody thinks that even the houswifes and the soccer moms could be effected. The alcoholic in this movie is played by the awesomely talented Meg Ryan, who should've been nominated for her role as the depressed alcoholic mom, Alice. Andy Garcia is also a good choice to play the troubled husband. The movie is very depressing but has a silver lining. Everyone should see this movie at one time or another, it will change your view on this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its All About Love xoxo
The movie sucks you in and doesnt let go til the end!! It engrosses you in REAL LIFE, it tells a story that you can feel so close to home it brings tears to your eyes more than once. The first time I saw this movie was at a group meeting for alcoholics and the response was breathtaking it touches your soul and makes you feel the love and the pain and every other emotion possible. The title I must admit doesnt draw you to the movie because you figure *Oh just another romance with no point or purpose* but in reality there are both. This movie is one of my all time favorites and I would recommend it to anyone. Its not just a chick flick for all you guys out there:p Never Judge a book by its cover:)

2-0 out of 5 stars But she tries so hard...
The scenario of a family dealing with a wife being the abuser rather than the husband is not commonly explored, yet this particular plot was ill-conceived, which almost makes it a crime. If a story as important as this can't be told well, it's better not to tell it at all, or the effect is that the viewers are numbed to a reality people should care more about. And when I finished watching this film, I yawned and put in something more gripping, while I should have at the very least been lulled into a few moments of reflection or contemplation.

For the most part, though the screenplay wasn't great, I feel poor casting is responsible for the film's failure. Try as she might, it just doesn't seem Meg Ryan can be taken seriously doing much else than romantic comedy. No, she isn't a bad actress, but the quirky, cute persona is what carries her, and when she attempts to be serious, she comes off as a little witchy and intolerant, not at all sympathetic or likable. In this particular role as the substance-abusing wife and mother, she doesn't inspire sympathy, never expresses any depth of confliction, and never convincingly emerges with dignity, though I suspect it was meant to be an empowering story.

Andy Garcia is "blah" as her husband. Yes, he's suitable as a nice guy who is confused as he both supports her and tries to hold her accountable, but he often comes across less confused and reticent and more wary and aloof as if he's actually secretly distracted by his dealings as a mob flunky or something.

The best performance is by Tina Majorino, who doesn't for a moment look like the spawn of Ryan and Garcia, but who's authentic reactions of fear and confusion when victimized by her mother are heart-rending. Thus to the film's credit, I guess the reality of a child being the most vulnerable victim in situations of substance abuse is demonstrated, but is not a strong enough impression to make this an even moderately impressive film. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fun movie
I remember watching this movie over and over when I was younger. You can't go wrong with the Olsen twins movies from when they were little--I'm sure most of us would agree that they were absolutely adorable and endearing at this age.

DDTT is a fun Halloween movie with lots of magic and supernatural powers that might be too much for younger kids, but it's still a very enjoyable film. Sick and tired of being twins, 7-year-olds Lynn and Kelly often get into fights. After experiencing cold rejection from their witch aunt Agatha and hearing stories from a mysterious "grave-digger," the girls finally learn of their parents' financial problems and set off on their own to rescue their beloved Aunt Sophia, who was the victim of a spell from her sister Agatha 7 years ago and is the only person who will be able the family get out of debt. And of course, lots of friends are made along the way, and the movie has got Mary-Kate and Ashley as the stars--a good formula for a kids' film.If you're a kid, you'll probably enjoy watching this on Halloween--if you're like me or anyone else who remembers the Olsen twins' younger days, you'll also enjoy watching and remembering.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite Olsen movie
This is my favorite Olsen movie that they have made, mainly because unlike so many of their more recent movies, it has a good plot and a very good supporting cast. The plot sends 7-year-olds Lynn and Kelly on a Halloween night mission to get a magical moonstone from their evil aunt who has cast a spell on their other aunt. Fun for little kids, but also enjoyable for older fans. It's a good movie to pull out around Halloweentime (or whenever) and at 17 years old, I am not ashamed to watch it because it is truly one of Mary-Kate and Ashley's better movies. I guess the reason I think that is because of the stronger recognition of the other characters--they really get a more substantial role in the movie than the surrounding characters in some of MKA's other movies. In this film, you'll fall in love with the endearing gravedigger, the money-hungry yet lovable Mr. N, and the supportive, "take charge" Oscar the Clown. And then you've got the girls' parents--who, for once, actually act like parents. Gentle, loving, good people--and yet they have problems of their own that they must get through as a family. Now you start to get the feel of a real movie with a real plot. Too many of Mary-Kate and Ashley's movies either have them with single moms or dads(which there is nothing wrong with at all, but it got a little repetitive with the Olsens) or completely up-in-the-clouds parents who were practically at their feet doting on them and giving them everything, thus showing the viewer exactly what life is NOT like. This movie is one exception where the casting of the girls' parents is very strong and realistic. After seeing enough of their other films, you may grow to appreciate seeing this. I am a long-time fan of these girls' films--have been ever since their memorable Full House days. But if you're looking for a quality Olsen movie, I'd recommend that you go for the ones from their younger years--this one may be your best bet. But that's only my opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Parents Beware
I purchased this video and was appalled when I watched it with my child. The twins go home with a homeless man without a second thought! What kind of message is this for children? Plus, the movie has disturbing imagery, that I found scary even as an adult. This is not wholesome entertainment!

Looking for a good "scary" movie for five+? Try The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knots. I loved it, and now all the many children in my life love it, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't get this video
This is a scary show, not due to the Halloween content, but because two little girls run away from home, talk to a stranger (a homeless man, or "hobo", go into another stranger's house (who is a midget male clown), need I say more? Although these fellows turn out to be nice guys, we all know that doesn't always happen in the real world. Bad message for kids who are supposed to be learning not to talk to strangers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Double Double tiol and trouble
I loved the movie. I am a big fan of the olsen twins. I have liked them since they were in Full House as babies. They are so cute and I am going to keep bying their movies until they stop making them. They are such a joy to watch on tv considering all of the bad junk that is on tv these days. I have a 3 year old child who loves the olsen twins as well. she gets me ot go out and buy them when she

3-0 out of 5 stars The music's good. Videos...so so.
I'm one of them new U2 converts, and my first CD by them was the hits collection, so I was pretty happy when I got this music video collections.

GOOD
-The music's all top notch stuff.
-The Unforgettable Fire and New Year's Day...beautiful videos both.
-Sweetest Thing is funny, but also quite poignant if you know the story behind the song.
-It is kinda funny watching Bono dance in I Will Follow like U2 was a new wave/synthpop act (they even looked the part, the buttoned to the neck white suits...)
-Where the Streets Have No Name, what a heck of a video
-One Tree Hill
-Amazing version of Bad, from Rattle and Hum

THE BAD
-Unfortunately, the amazing version of Bad features Bono taking off his shirt...uh, I don't think I wanted to see that.
-'New wave' U2 in I Will Follow
-'Hair' U2 in With or Without You (Bono in sleeveless leather top with long ponytail, ugh)
-I kinda cringe with the whole 'Bono marching to the drums' and the 'white flag' in Sunday Bloody Sunday
-They made a video for 'Gloria' didn't they...I love that song, I want that video.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good video compilation, but...
...not a complete one. Again, like the album of the same name, it's missing songs, it's not in chronological order, and - unlike THE BEST OF 1990-2000, it's not on DVD yet!!!!! Here's what could have been the tracklisting for the original VHS release and what should be for the DVD (and as a bonus, the UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY/LIVE AT RED ROCKS concert video should be included):

1. I Will Follow
2. Gloria
3. New Year's Day
4. Pride...In The Name Of Love (two versions)
5. The Unforgettable Fire
6. Bad (two "live" versions)
7. A Sort Of Homecoming
8. Where The Streets Have No Name
9. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
10. With Or Without You
11. Bullet The Blue Sky (LIVE)
12. One Tree Hill
13. The Sweetest Thing
14. Desire
15. When Love Comes To Town
16. Angel Of Harlem
17. All I Want Is You
UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY/LIVE AT RED ROCKS (bonus material)---------
1. Surrender
2. Seconds
3. Sunday Bloody Sunday
4. The Electric Co.
5. October
6. New Year's Day
7. I Threw A Brick Through A Window
8. A Day Without Me
9. Gloria
10. Party Girl
11. 11 O' Clock Tick Tock
12. I Will Follow
13. '40'

(by the way, the video for "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on 1980-1990 was taken from the LIVE AT RED ROCKS concert so that's why I didn't list it with the other promo videos)

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD Must be released
This is another example of a music video that should be on DVD,
Please release it!

5-0 out of 5 stars ?????
Why isn't this available on DVD? When it is issued on DVD, they should include the unreleased Red Hill Mining Town video by Neil Jordan. Hopefully their merchandising team has thought ahead with Best of 1990-2000 and will automatically issue it on DVD as well as VHS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where are Gloria and Celebration?
Of course, whenever you are a "snob" who has liked something longer than most people you know, you tend to like the stuff that they all missed more than the stuff that made them jump on the bandwagon. I did not like Joshua Tree for several years because it made U2 a household name instead of a cult band. Yeah, only a couple of years later, after I hadn't listened to it a a while, I had to say, "This was the album of the '80's - well done."

But this isn't about that, it's about the vid collection. My point is that this is a collection for all of those who jumped on the bandwagon on or after Joshua Tree. For the "thousands" of us who rushed out to buy War in 1983 this collection is missing some relics. Most significantly, Gloria, the first song I heard by them on a Joliet, IL punk/new wave station, and Celebration - an early "single-only" (like Party Girl and 11 O'Clock) and never has appeared on an authorized album. It was probably the next best video to New Year's Day.

Nonetheless, any collection of U2 video's automatically gets at least 4 stars by default. Worth the money, of course, just disappointing by the lack of the relics. Maybe they will cash in by releasing a DVD with Celebration included! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
On one hand, "He's Your Dog Charlie Brown" is interesting and somewhat amusing as the tale of Snoopy behaving badly and having to stay with Peppermint Patty. This tale somewhat foreshadows the film "Snoopy Come Home." On the other hand I guess you have to really be a kid to enjoy "Flash beagle." I was in my twenties when I saw it and thought it was WAY too corny. Must be my age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth seeing for Flashbeagle
The first special on this VHS, HE'S YOUR DOG, basically, in a word, sucks. The plot revolves around Snoopy needing to go to obedience school due to his bratty behavior. The story and dialogue are poorly written, and the animation is poor. Snoopy is such an unsympathetic character that the viewer doesn't care what hapens to him. The only redeeming things about this are some of the backgraound art and Vince Guaraldi's great soundtrack.

On the other hand FLASHBEAGLE is overall great, probably one of the 10 best specials of all time. This is like a Peanuts homage to musicals. At times the "dancing" looks stiff and awkward; however, this is probably the best animation you can expect when dealing with characters whose limbs are like macaroni. A lot of the songs are quite catchy, like the "Flashbeagle" theme song, "Listen to Lucy", and "Pigpen Hoedown".

3-0 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- Peanuts classics
Until a couple of years ago, if you couldn't catch a Peanuts cartoon/special on TV or pick up a Peanuts treasury from the library, then you were out of luck. But now, classic Peanuts material is much easier to find. One such classic -- well, CLASSICS, rather -- is this video, which contains He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown from 1968 and It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown from 1983.

He's Your Dog is about everyone complaining to Charlie Brown about Snoopy's lack of obedience, and Flashbeagle is loosely based on Flashdance (which came out earlier that same year) with Snoopy playing the lead character. Both specials are good -- actually, the latter is GREAT -- but there are some other points I would like to cover.

To understand why I gave this video a 3-1/2-star rating, let me go into more detail about the specials. As I said before, He's Your Dog is about Snoopy's lack of obedience. He even causes problems to Charlie Brown, because he insists on walking Snoopy on a leash, and Snoopy behaves as though he can't breathe -- or that Charlie Brown's grip is too strong on him, I'm not sure which. Anyway, Charlie Brown sends Snoopy to stay with Peppermint Patty for a while to learn some discipline, which Patty briefly explains to Roy.

Actually, that's another thing I've always wondered about. What exactly is the deal with Roy? He always just happened to appear around Peppermint Patty, and I'm not sure if he lived with her, or if SHE lived with HIM, or what. And why was he always wearing that hat from camp?

Anyway, back to the movie. After a while it looks as though Snoopy is well-mannered, but when Charlie Brown comes to pick him up, he makes the mistake of bringing the leash with him, which causes Snoopy to literally tear up the leash. Okay, Snoopy can tear up a leash with his bare hands, yet he is unable to get out of the leash when Charlie Brown is walking him?

Flashbeagle has more of a party theme, as the kids are all at a party (I'm not exactly sure whose party it WAS, though) and they get into games ("Lucy Says", like Simon Says) and dance routines (Charlie Brown's "The Pigpen Hoedown") and such. The only thing really wrong with this special was that the animation was kind of lazy. If more than one person was in any shot, you'll notice that the person talking was usually the only person moving -- nobody else was even blinking. Maybe United Feature Syndicate didn't want to shell out too much money and instead just stuck still frames in.

Finally, I don't understand why these two videos are packaged together because their respective themes aren't even remotely related (and don't say they're both about Snoopy; you know that's not what I mean). But this is still decent enough to pick up if you want to relive some nice Peanuts memories.

my kids can't get enough of this video. my 7 yr.old loves lucy's says and wants me to forward the tape to the party.
my 4 yr old loves snoopy when snoopy play fight with lucy by
licking her. he sometime plays like he's snoopy and does the
same thing. great laughs all around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Our kids' favorite Peanuts Double Feature video
We own several of the Peanuts Double Feature videos, and this one is our kids' favorite.

The first program, "He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown" is one of the earliest Peanuts specials and is my favorite of the two episodes on the tape. Snoopy's initial, ornery mischief-making is quite humorous, and his eventual taming by Peppermint Patty is a nice lesson in responsibility and gratitude. It's classic Schultz that many parents(like me) will find both nostalgic and funny.

The second, "It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown!," seems dated to me in certain respects (particularly the disco theme), but is far and away the kids' (ages 6 and 3) favorite. Flashbeagle is the most musical of all the Peanuts special outings, with a number of catchy, character-specific songs that never fail to get our daughters up and dancing (our 3-year-old now sings along with "Listen to Lucy").

This is a solid Peanuts tape worth having in your kids' video library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This tape is a collector's item.
This tape is more of a "must have" for Jerry Seinfeld fans or diehard SNL fans. For others, you may want to think twice before spending good money on this one. That is only because of the length, a mere 32 minutes (and that includes the video company's opening credits). The comedic skits and comedy bits are very good. I believe this originally aired in 1992, a couple of years BEFORE the TV show "Seinfeld" hit its prime. Jerry's fans will like this tape a lot. Especially the "Superman" sketch and the "game show" sketch (where the contestants answer questions, using Jerry's trademark delivery style). Again, if you're a fan of anything "Seinfeld," grab it while you can. It already seems like a collector's item to me. If you're an SNL fan, be aware that the only skits on this tape (except for the opening bit, before the monologue) are the ones in which Jerry appear. The episode's other skits are not included. For fans of both Seinfeld and SNL, definitely purchase it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable. Jerry at his Jerry-best.
This is a very enjoyable video if you are a Jerry Seinfeld fan. It starts with a sketch (4.10 minutes) with Phil Hartman playing Clinton and Dana Carvey playing Brown. They are talking about a political debate they are about to have.

Then comes Jerry Seinfeld's monologue (6.1 minutes), which consists of some material any fan will be familiar with because it is also covered in his book SEINLANGUAGE and in his stand up act I'M TELLING YOU FOR THE LAST TIME (available on VHS and DVD). My favorite part of this bit is when he talks about the water at the edge of the runway at La Guardia Airport. I know exactly what he is talking about; it is kind of freaky to be in a plane going down a runway that ends at a body of water. Jerry suggests that they put piranha in the water to make the experience even more pleasant.

"Stand Up and Win" (8.26 minutes) is the first sketch we see Jerry in. In this sketch, Jerry is the talk show host of a game that tests contestants' knowledge of commedian catch phrases. Jerry gives a question, and the guys have to answer with a "Jerry" response. Also in this sketch are: Dana Carvey, Rob Schneider, and Adam Sandler.

"Make You Think" (6.28 minutes) has Jerry as an exasperated high school teacher. His students are incredibly dense as he tries to teach them about World War II. I really enjoyed this sketch because one of my favorite SNL alumni is in it, Ellen Cleghorn. And Jerry makes a very good teacher, if only his students weren't so dumb (one student being Chris Rock, and another being an even-skinnier-than-usual David Spade).

Probably the best part of the video is "Superman" (4.32 minutes). In this sketch Jerry plays the man he will always be famous for wanting to be: The Man of Steel. Jerry as Superman is being interviewed on the radio by a radio personality played by Phil Hartman.

"Goodnight" (1.31 minutes) is just the standard "Thank you for watching, Goodnight" thing that all SNL hosts do after the show with the cast standing behind them. Apparenlty Annie Lennox was the musical guest that night, because she is in the crowd.

I'm not exactly sure what the original air date was, but it was obviously in the very early 90s - probably 1992 or 1993. And my only complaint is that I believe that they failed to include all sketches that made it into the original airing. .

Other than that, what Jerry fan could ask for more? The Patron Saint of Mr. Average playing Superman. This is why we love him.

4-0 out of 5 stars A real classic - collector's item
If you can still get your hands on this one, do it. This features Jerry at his younger comedian days along with the talented crews at Saturday Night Live. See how his nothingness evolved into His Royal Nothingness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a Seinfeld fan.
Except for the monologue, it had some pretty weak material, I thought

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great, Seinfeld on SNL.
This video is awsome. Jerry does his act, and hosts the show. If you like SNL and Jerry this is the video to buy. In one part of the show Jerry is a teacher of a slow-witted class. Where he tries to teach history. After he gets a couple of stupid anweres he gives up on the class. Chris Farley also stars in this episode. The video is also very inexpensive. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Only for the die-hard fan
As a devoted fan of the Wonder Years, I must say that I was disappointed in this video collection. Not only is the quality poor (fading in and out, scratchiness, etc.) but there are only two episodes per video (on this one and on vol. 1). I appreciate the early episodes, but they definitely made a mistake by passing up some of the gems of the later seasons ("The Lake"/cara episode, "Goodbye", anything with Becky Slater...and of course, the 2-part series finale). Unless you're desperate and this is truly your only option, I would recommend holding out until something better comes along.

4-0 out of 5 stars My review
The episodes on this video both really make you think. Not only are they both amusing, they also capture your heart. "My Father's Office" is a father-son episode, in which Kevin goes to work with his father and uncovers a few mysteries of the life of his father. He learns a few reasons why his father is the way he is. "Angel" is a funnier episode than the first, but it still manages to have a moral at the end and make you think. In it Karen, Kevin's older sister, has a new boyfriend, that Kevin discovers is cheating on her and Kevin tries to find ways to get rid of him. So if you're a Wonder Years fan, I reccommend you add this great video to your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous trip down memory lane!
The Wonder Years is a show about innocence in a time not so innocent. The naration parallel to the beautiful script and hilarious acting, make the trip down memory lane a lot easier to swallow. Which, I assume, is it's initiative. As for these two episodes, the first is a must see. For those who had a father figure, this is a must see. It may make you want to reconsider the relationship with your son, or daughter. The other episode is another classic in a very classy t.v. show that will hopefully teach you as much as it has taught me about myself and my past. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars - four hours went by too fast!
This movie (miniseries, actually) remains on my top ten list of favorite films. The writing, the acting , the storyline, everything, just leaves me wanting to watch more (after four hours, that is saying a lot!). This film is inventive and captivating without a lot of special effects or high budget - it is just good. The basis of the story is the coming of age in 1960's London, of Kareem, (played by Naveen Andrews, from the English Patient) who is the son of and Englishwoman and Indian man. His place in English culture, in Indian culture, among his respective extended families on each side, as well as his place in life - exploring his career options, his [body], etc. - make this a thoroughly enjoyable experience. This movie is very entertaining and quite funny, especially when Kareem's ... father decides to jump on the East-West Hindu yoga and spirituality bandwagon of the sixties to make money. I just cannot describe all of the amusing and touching scenes from this film that make it such a gem. Very well made, and it has a very good soundtrack as well, featuring some good David Bowie songs. This film is a must-see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddha of Erotica
Wonderful BBC film adaptation of the Hanif Kureishi novel of the same name. The translation to the small screen worked well primarily because Kureishi himself co-wrote the screenplay.

A satirical witty look at bi-racial issues in the teeming London (and its suburbs) of the 1970's. The film is unexperimental on a cinematographic level but carried brilliantly by a well writen screenplay and superior acting.

Narrated from the perspective of a selfish young man, this is on the surface a tale of a suburban London youth trying to get laid and make it in the world.

Issues of family and commitment are looked at with a subtlety that is refreshing in a world of films that often try to beat you over the head with their moralizations.

Karim is confussed about the world around him (as young people all are) and trying to balance loyalty to his quirky family with the duality of his racially mixed background. All of this is set upon a backdrop of a young man trying to find sex and excitement and his place in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kureshi is spectacular!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wild Horses
The rural grazing life in the Snowy Mountains has hardly changed since Banjo Paterson traveled the high country and wrote his famous "Man from Snowy River" poem. His poetry is an authentic voice of a frontier society in which song and campfire recitation were much appreciated entertainment.

"And the Snowy River riders on the mountains make their home,
Where the river runs those giant hills between;
I have seen full many horsemen since I first commenced to roam,
But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen."

Andrew Barton Paterson was born in New South Wales and was the son of a Scottish immigrant. Paterson was a poet, journalist, lawyer, jockey, soldier, farmer and one of the best-loved figures of Australian literature. His poem is the basis for this gorgeous movie about the treacherous terrain and bands of wild, stampeding horses. He also wrote Waltzing Matilda, which is lovingly woven into the soundtrack.

The Man from Snowy River Movie tells a more in depth story of a cattle baron Mr. Harrison (Jessica's father) who has had a long quarrel with his brother Spur. Kirk Douglas plays both roles. When one brother finds his fortune, the second goes searching for gold. This is a story based on a time when families tended their sheep and cattle. Ghost towns from the gold rush still haunt the landscape.

Set against the untamed Australian Outback, a love story unfolds between Jessica Harrison ( Sigrid Thornton) and Jim Craig (Tom Burlinson). Jim seems to have a way with horses and Jessica is a bit of a brash filly herself.

She has her own ideas regarding a woman's choices in life and choosing the path she will take in her own career. She defies her father and runs off to find Jim. Her anger towards Jim over a horse riding accident is like a summer storm that quickly disappears once she experiences the excitement of forbidden love.

Her father, Mr. Harrison, has not yet learned that there is a beautiful place inside each person where we are either nurtured or destroyed. He seems emotionally destructive and Jessica rebels because he won't let her follow any of her dreams. He seeks to trap her in his own wishes and thinks she should settle down into a domestic lifestyle.

Jim and Jessica are soul mates with hearts as wild as the horses running free through the snow. While at first they fight their mutual attraction, Jessica seems clearer in her thinking after she almost dies and realizes there are just some things in life worth fighting for.

Equestrian Heaven with an impressive conclusion! You must see this movie once in your life if you love horses. The wide-screen edition is highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Not To Like...??
"NEVER CRY WOLF"..."FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX"..."THE ENLGLISH PATIENT"...

...all, cinematic and character delights - as you will find "THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER"...

Technically a "10", this Aussie (and World) classic, may leave you none-the-less breathless. George Miller's direction, Cull Cullen's script (enhanced by John Dixon and David Bradshaw's, "A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson", whose original poem is the essense of the film), Keith Wagstaff's absolutely stunning cinematography and Bruce Rowland's original and heart-tugging music (particularly, the piano solo, "Jessica's Theme") may bring tears to your eyes with this simple, Down-Under western plot -- but it took a world-class editor like Adrian Carr to put this gorgeous film into the top ranks of movie-watchers the globe over. Carr's timing of Wagstaff's photography and Rowland's music is the stuff legends are made of...just, dare I say it, "Professional Grade"(!)
It didn't hurt to have a made-to-order cast. Burlinson is quietly, and wonderfully, cast as the young male hero, "Jim Craig." Kirk Douglas hasn't played a better role - and, as a double. Terence Donovan played the quietly strong, short-lived role as Burlinson's father, "Henry." Sigrid Thornton was exemplary and believable as Tom's love interest, "Jessica" (the woman is beautiful) and the venerable Jack Thompson was magnificent as "Clancy" - the range-wise, "horse-magician" glue that holds the whole film together.
The subtle British humour Americans are so used to is sometimes raucous in the film - more the better from Chris Haywood's
"Curly" (..."Ah'm studyin' to be Supavisa!").
If you can't get an empathetic rise and a teardrop over the cornea through this wonderfully crafted epic, then pop-a-top from a 12 oz. curl of your favorite brew, pull back the handle on your Lazy-Boy and turn on the Wrestling Channel...you dolt.

Filmed in 1982, it's still a true classic 22 years later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, with beautiful music and scenery!!
I was only nine years old when this movie came out, and I have loved it ever since I first saw it in the theater. I am a horse lover and rider myself, and so I'm sure that's a big part of why this movie is one of my favorites, but I think even people who have never even been around horses can appreciate it. The acting is excellent, and the scenes with the horses galloping across the gorgeous Australian countryside, are wonderful. One of my favorite things about it is the music. The music is some of the most beautiful I've ever heard. The soundtrack is definitely one of the highlights of the film. And of course, I can't forget one of the most incredible scenes I've ever seen in any horse movie, which is where Tom Burlinson gallops his horse down an unbelievably steep mountainside. My family and I have always wondered if this was actually done by a stunt rider, or if it involved trick photography. Either way, it is a very impressive scene, and will leave you in complete awe. This will always be on my list of all-time favorite films, and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Western-type genre, or anyone who loves horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars My All-time Favorite
I first saw The Man From Snowy River when I was 8 years old and now that I'm 23, it's still my most favorite movie. I've probably watched it close to a thousand times by now, with every line memorized. There is not a single thing about this movie that's not amazingly beautiful, and the sequel is just as good--if not better, then the first! I would absolutely recommend this movie to anyone looking for some good, wholesome entertainment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Twenty years later, this movie is still an Aussie classic
I remember seeing this with my girlfriends in the theatre, and then buying my first vcr so I could watch this film everyday. The cinematography is gorgeous. The music is haunting and beautiful. Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton make a great romantic team, and Jack Thompson is wonderful as Clancy. All of the actors fit their roles except for Kirk Douglas. It really shows that a "big name star" had to be used to get this picture made. Kirk Douglas insisted on re-writing many of his lines, and refused to step off his horse with the entire cast at the end of the movie in homage to The Man From Snowy River. The entire end scene had to be re-written. Little wonder that Brian Dennehey was cast in the role in the sequel. Enjoy both the original and the sequel. And be sure to get the soundtracks. Bruce Rowland created two of the best movie scores you will ever hear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New York's Finest Thieves
Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid play New York's perfect criminals. They have the perfect bank robbery plan. It's perfectly executed. The only thing that gets in the way is the city in which they operate. The city that spawned these crooks, also spawned the madness (the same madness that frustrated Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis in THE OUT OF TOWNERS) that get in the way of their getaway. From the opening scene of Bill Murray in a clown costume, I knew I was in for a quirky film, but it was much more than that. This was a surprisingly funny movie that captures the essential oddities of the city. Philip Bosco plays a bus driver who would better be suited as a Marine drill sergeant at Parris Island, and he's just one of the eccentrics. I won't give anything else away. Just take my advice and give this underrated film a look.

4-0 out of 5 stars Possibly Bill Murray's Most Underrated Movie
Quick Change was hardly the most amusing film I saw at first viewing when it was released. With each successive viewing since, I have been more and more pleased. The directing is very good and Murray's comic nuances really become apparent the more I see this movie of comic twists and turns. Murray doesn't monopolize the great comedic acting here. On his level are Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, and especially the veteran Jason Robards. It's an interesting twist that we the viewer are led to sympathize and root for the criminals.

5-0 out of 5 stars PUT IT OUT ON DVD ALREADY!!!
I've been waiting months and months for it to come out, and nobody wants to move a finger to put it out on DVD. There is so much crap out on DVD, so why cant they put out something actually GOOD?!? This is one of Bill Murray's best, and is my third favorite movie, apart from Groundhog Day being 1st, and Harold and Maude being 2nd. Please produce this on DVD. PLEASE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Undernoticed But Definitely Worth Owning and Watching
This is one of my favorite movies. It's a comedy with classic performances by Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid, a great supporting role by Jason Robards, and a wonderful cameo by the late Phil Hartman of SNL fame. The movie pokes great fun at all the foibles of New York City. The plot is very clever, the twists and turns incredibly funny, and the result is a movie that keeps viewers laughing throughout. It's not just a movie to watch once, but one of those rare movies you can watch over and over again, yet never tire of. If only they would put it out on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Murray Classic
Although not very well known, this remains one of Bill Murray's funniest & most original films. Feeling frustrated with his life and NYC in general, a city planner comes up with the perfect bank robbery scheme, with the help of his girlfriend and best friend. Getting away with the money ends up being the easiest part of their day. Everything imaginable that can go wrong, does as the three attempt to make it to the airport. Quaid is especially good as the dimbulb best friend, and Murray is dead-on perfect as the subdued brains behind the almost perfect crime. Murray also co-directed.

Highly underrated, & more then worth checking out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An truly twisted '60s sex comedy
Woah! Call the Gender Studies class in to explain this one to me... Debbie Reynolds stars as the feminine reincarnation of a no-good philandering wolf named Charlie; Tony Curtis is the best (and perhaps only) friend who was dragooned into reading the eulogy at Charlie's funeral. Of course, when Debbie shows up on the beach naked and with amnesia, Curtis at first gets drawn into the mystery, and then falls in love with... his old best friend(!) Where to begin? This has Reynolds ogling other girls in the dressing room, Walter Matthau (who had shot Charlie at the beginning of the film) hitting on Reynolds, Charlie golddigging with a hapless rich boy (played by Pat Boone) and finally, the romantic scenes between Curtis and Reynolds... the levels of homoeroticism in this film are so multifarious and bizarre, that it's truly, astoundingly mind-boggling. I really wish I could know more about the genesis of this project... How this project got green-lighted in the first place is a source of continual amazement... You really have to see it to believe it!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great film based on a great script
A playboy is shot by a jealous husband after he is caught in the middle of an affair with the man's wife. Later he comes back as Debbie Reynolds, possibly as God's punishment to him for the way he spent his life using women for his own pleasure, or mabey as a way of seeing if being a woman can teach him how to be a better human being, or maybe both. It's a saddly undiscovered comedy that hopefully more people will get to see and enjoy, now that it's been rereleased on video. I also happened to find the script for the play that this movie is based on. (There was a copy of the play write in the public library.) The play is very, very short, so of course the movie adds much more to the story. I was a little disapointed by the ending of the movie, however. (I liked the ending of the play much better.) The movie is still well worth seeing, however, and if you are lucky enough to find the play script, it is well worth reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars GOODBYE MOVIE!!
This film is boring and NOT FUNNY! A man in a woman's body should get more laughs, but not in this offering. As you watch, you wonder what is going on. If you buy this, you have made an ASS out of yourself!

2-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Charlie
I'm sorry but I did not like this movie. It had some flaws. The
actors were good but the story was not told very well. I wouldn't recomend this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Charlie, it's good!
I was born in 1961 and probably saw this movie the first time it was shown on TV back in the late 60s or early 70s. It left an impression for some reason, much the way "It's a Mad Mad Mad World" and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" did. I often find the theme tunes to these movies running through my head and once you've heard "Goodbye Charlie" as it's played hypnotically like a soft breeze throughout this movie, you'll be haunted by it forever. You may or may not appreciate that fact. ... Read more

Technically ambitious but artistically underwhelming, this 1961 epic by Anthony Mann (Man of the West) stars Charlton Heston as an 11th-century hero who drives the Moors from Spain. The film has been described as "glum," and that is indeed apt for a story that focuses so much on its central character's losses in the face of his simultaneous, mythic approbation. Then again, Mann has always been interested in the hidden weaknesses in prevailing myths, so that's not unusual. What is unusual in El Cid is the degree to which technology takes over his filmmaking, as it does here with so many grandiose and bravura moments with a roving camera that don't add up to anything beyond spectacle. As an achievement of Hollywood's technical advancements in the postwar years, and also as part of the filmographies of Mann and Heston, the film is well worth a look. But it is not the artistic equal of other epics of its day, such as Lawrence of Arabia. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'The Perfect Knight' a PERFECT Film!
'El Cid' is the IDEAL film for any fan of great tales of Knighthood, the Age of Chivalry, and great tales of adventure! Directed by Anthony Mann with reverence to the best elements of the genre, shot on location in Spain, the mammoth production stars perfectly-cast Charlton Heston as Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a warrior held in such respect by both friend and foe, that he is nicknamed 'El Cid' (The Man). Sophia Loren is luminous as his ladylove, Jimena (one might quibble that she NEVER ages through the film, but Loren is so radiant in the role, who cares?) The battle scenes are epically staged, the color photography is rich and tapestry-like, the sets and costumes capture the feel of medieval Spain, Miklós Rózsa's score is sweeping, wildly romantic, and, in its organ finale, triumphant; EVERY element in this film WORKS, and is a labor of love!

The screenplay, by Philip Yordan, Fredric M. Frank, and Ben Barzman, uses Vivar as the definition of Chivalry; noble, with lofty ideals, he opens the film by defending the Crucifix in a small Spanish town, defeating a band of Moors, then showing them mercy, which earns their respect, and gains the blessing of the Church (the symbolism of 'El Cid' and the Cross is clearly juxtaposed; he is truly sent as an answer to Spain's prayers!)

He and the beautiful Lady Jimena, daughter of the King's Champion, are to be wed, but when Vivar is forced to face him in a duel, killing him, as the elder attempts to defeat him by treachery, Jimena is sworn to avenge her father's death!

Inheriting by default the title of Champion, Vivar is immediately thrust into a spectacular combat against a rebelling city's Champion, fought with an array of medieval weaponry; this scene is the first of many highpoints of the film, and is incredible! The hard-fought victory 'vindicates' Vivar's new title, and Christendom and Spain has its true Champion against the Moor!

The film has all the classic elements; heroism and betrayal, pure love and jealous hatred, divine purpose and petty manipulations. Above all of this towers 'El Cid', whose lofty ideals are never compromised, whose only dream is to serve a united Spain. Nothing, not even death itself, will prevent him from fulfilling his destiny!

If you have only one film about Knighthood or Chivalry in your collection, this should be it! No other movie even comes close to 'El Cid'...it is truly a triumph!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly crafted and highly under rated masterpiece
I saw El Cid soon after its release in 1962 when I was just 12. I was then in an armed forces training school at Dehradun, India, and the entire college had to march five miles to the theater to see it as an inspiring and motivational film for future military leaders. We had never heard of the Cid or any other Spanish hero till then. But, when we left the hall, after seeing this 3-hour magnum opus, we were never to forget him. Since then I must have seen this film on video and in theaters scores of times. On every occasion I was moved afresh by the heroism and sacrifice of 'the man who rode away into legend'- El Cid. I do not think, except for Ben Hur, Sound of Music and Titanic, any other English film has made such a lasting impact. Yet, surprisingly and sadly, El Cid has never figured in the all time greats of Hollywood. Both Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren have given splendid and unforgettable performances, probably their best ever. Their characters and role have been superbly etched by a screenplay, which has done justice to a long but very well knit story. Both the indoor settings and outdoor locales, in which the film was magnificently shot, are so beautiful and natural, that one is literally transported into Spain in the Middle Ages. The lance duel on the plains of Calahara is superbly picturized in the timeless tradition of Hollywood immortal scenes. By the time the movie reaches its unforgettable climax you feel a hollowness creeping into your heart, for you realize that the magic of one of the greatest cinematic epics is about to end and you have no choice but to return to the dreary everyday world! I eagerly look forward to replace my ageing video cassette with the newly released DVD, which I am sure will give me viewing pleasure for as many years ahead as the tape and film versions had given me in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preservation of a magnificent, splendidly cinematic event
My sentiments are pretty much identical with the ones of the gentleman Sri, from India. I am very disapointed that this magnificantly depicted story has not found favor with the DVD formating industry. After all stories such as 'Tale of two cities', 'Count of Monte Christo', 'Man in the iron Mask','Scarlet Pimpernel', the list goes on..;has been formated in DVD format. I can only wonder if the reason for not having 'El Cid' on disc was a matter of preference or economics at time of decision? I understand that not everyone may enjoy this 'Genre'but personally I believe it's one of the best re-telling of a magnificent, by-gone era and is certainly worthy of DVD formating-if for nothing else but to retain History. I truly wish that this masterpiece of cinamatic splendor would be re-formated and re-mastered digitally. It is such a great story and so masterfully depicted that it most certainly worthy of telling to future generations-and what better way to preserve this on DVD format, since it keeps a lot better than Tape?

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD available on amazon.fr
This film deserves a Criterion DVD complete with a restored print. It certainly is a timely film and I find its vision of mutual tolerance and charity between Christians and Muslims particularly welcome at the present moment (especially with all those frothering neocons yapping about a clash of civilizations). It will be interesting to see Ridley Scott's forthcoming Crusades film, which looks to be an avatar of El Cid.
There is curently a DVD available from amazon.co.uk, but do not buy it. It is full screen, not widescreen. There is a DVD available from Amazon.fr, however, which does have widescreen. I saw the film when I was eight (for my birthday) in 1962 and saw it on television (wth a pan and scan edit) which butchered the 70 mm Technirama print. The fullscreen (tv) format gives one only less than two thirds of the actual frame. It's a wonder to see the French DVD version on my 23 inch flat computer screen. the only problems with htis DVD are that the print is not a great one--there are scratches every now nad then, and hte sound track is momentarily off for a few seconds. More troublesome is that the French subtitles were burned into the print, so they can't be removed when you watch the DVD in English (there is also a French dubbed version). And the various menu features don't work except for film and language tracks. Still, I'm glad I got it and recommend it until a DVD here becomes available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rodrigo's Christians against Ben Yussef's Moors
This grand, epic film tells many stories but the main thread is about the selfless, noble sacrifice of the gallant El Cid, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, who was able to effect an alliance of Christians and Moors to defend Spain against Ben Yussuf and the very real threat of a Moorish invasion from North Africa. El Cid faces many trials and tribulations in his quest for peace and freedom in war-torn Spain, where palace intrigue and plots, treachery and assassinations threaten the country's stability. Charlton Heston's Rodrigo is a man of courage and bravery who is also just and sees the senselessness of killing Emirs and spares the lives of five captives after a battle in order to spare the citizens from Emirs seeking revenge for the killing of their soldiers. Thus begins Rodrigo's long, lonely and often thankless struggle to free Spain from the fear of Ben Yussuf. Rodrigo's battle to defend his father's honor against the slurs made by Chimene's father is only the first of many trials he faces until many years later when the final battle and victory against the Moors is at hand and will bring peace and unity to Spain. Sophia Loren is quite lovely as Chimene who finally embraces Rodrigo as her husband and realizes that it is he who represents Spain's only hope for peace and freedom. The battle scenes are well done, with much of the action shown in close-quarters combat and the beauty of Spain's castles and countryside is captured in beautiful widescreen Technicolor. The superb production has a wonderful music score by Miklós Rózsa that is evocative of the beauty and sorrow of this quixotic land on the Iberian Peninsula...a land of contradictions with its own unique character and mystique. ... A pioneer of America's first frontier came to life every week for years--now you can relive his adventures with Daniel Boone: Premiere Episode. In "Ken-Tuck-E," Fess Parker as our national hero must take territory from the natives in order to prepare for war with the British.Along the way, we meet his family, friends (including Ed Ames as Mingo), and enemies as "Dan'l" fights, talks, and sings his way through scrape after scrape. Though some of the characterizations might offend modern sensibilities, if viewed in context the show can be seen as respectful (except possibly to the British and raccoons). This classic episode shows why Daniel Boone stayed in living rooms for so long--charm and adventure go a long way in this country. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE DAYS OF YESTERYEAR
As several have said, Fess Parker was a better Daniel Boone than a Davy Crockett. Oh well, he was Davy only four or five times, and Daniel about SIX YEARS. Practice does make perfect. This is a good video for nostalgic reasons and fairly believable acting. If you are a historian who nitpicks about accuracy, then don't watch. It was amazing to see Plains TeePees intermingled with East Coast wigwams. Some of the tribal costume was out of place as well. Oh yes, some of the "Indians" needed a little more berry juice for complexion.
Other than that, this is an excellent video. It is very family oriented(Daniel does not take the Indian wife that is offered to him because Becky is waiting back home), his family always runs to meet him, and gets angry if he has to leave again. He tells stories to his children, and sings to the Missus.
Yes, there is some violence and killing and probably excessive, but Dan'l doesn't kill unless it is to protect someone, and tries avoid it if possible.
These things just are not done in films today, and if they are attempted they just don't have the same spirit.
This video(may there soon be more!!) also gives our children a chanced to see a program that excited us when we were young. everyone has seen all the Peanuts cartoons, and odds and ends of famous sci-fi, but this is a simpler life video.
It is also great to see familiar faces we haven't heard from in years like Ed Ames, and did anyone notice George "Goober Pyle" Lindsay up on the stockade wall during the battle?
AHHHH for the days of clean, if very inaccurrate historical stories. Yes we were very prejudiced in those days, but I think things like this were the beginning of racial acceptance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dan'l Boone living large on the frontier of Ken Tuck E
"Ken Tuck E" is the pilot episode for "Daniel Boone," which originally aired on September 24, 1964. Fess Parker, who had become famous in the 1950's playing Davy Crockett for Disney, became even more successful as American frontiersman and folk hero Daniel Boone. Technically a "Western," the series was set in the 18th century, right before the American Revolution, when the "west" was the North Carolina-Tennessee-Kentucky! In this pilot episode Dan'l gets his friends, both Indians and settlers, ready to fight the British. Ed Ames co-starred as Dan'l's Indian friend, Mingo, while Patricia Blair played Rebecca Boone, Veronica Cartwright was daughter Jemima, and Darby hinton son Israel. The show also featured Albert Salmi as Yadkin and Dal McKennon as Cincinnatus, the tavern-keeper of Boonesborough. This first episode is certainly representative of the series, which focused on Boone's encounters with friendly and hostile Indians, his pioneering exploits, and his relationship with his family. I know I am not alone in thinking that Parker made a better Daniel Boone than he did a Davy Crockett.

5-0 out of 5 stars great family entertainment
I agree with the other reviewers, this is great family entertainment that you aren't ashamed of letting your kids and family see. I think all the baby boomers and even some of the kids of today would enjoy seeing this series on DVD or at least VHS.

Please pass this on to the ones who decide what is coming out next on video.

When a recent widower (the wonderfully overemphatic George C. Scott ) moves into an antique Washington mansion, his realization that he may not be the only resident leads him toward a deadly secret that refuses to remain buried....The best haunted-house film since the legendary Haunting, this potent, classy combination of the mystery and horror genres eschews explicit gore and dumb shocks in exchange for a subtle creepiness that occasionally builds to a terrifying peak (watch out for that seance scene!). The result is a satisfyingly intelligent horror film with an intriguing dash of Watergate-era paranoia. Director Peter Medak went on to direct the considerably more gratuitous and somewhat less effective Romeo Is Bleeding and The Krays. --Andrew Wright ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Changeling (1979)
Director: Peter Medak
Cast: George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, Melvyn Douglas, Jean Marsh, Barry Morse.
Running Time: 109 minutes.
Rated R for violence and some language.

At a time when the horror genre was shifting away from the suspenseful notions of such classics as "Psycho", "Rosemary's Baby", and "Halloween", this film is a pleasant surprise of a horror-thriller due to its firm, gripping script, excellent musical and orchestrating score, and fine performances from the entire cast. Medak presents George C. Scott's character as a rigid puzzle piece searching for the rest of the connection as a lonely, old composer who thrives on seclusion. Attempting to get on with his life after his wife and child are tragically killed, the music lover buys a new home and looks forward to the new chapter of his life; however, an evil presence lurks in the halls.

As the horror of "The Changeling" proceeds, Scott's character is transformed into a soul searching for the reasons for his failures and short-comings, all the while trying to survive in a haunted estate. A truly ghoulishly fun film that gladly mimmicks the work of previous classic films of the genre, in turn producing a very enjoyable thriller that deserves much more respect than it has received. One of the better supernatural thrillers of the late 1970s.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Haunted and Haunting movies ever...
George C Scott suffers the tragic loss of his wife and young daughter and moves to Seattle to teach music and compose. He rents an enormous old house, (the house is so vast, it is hard to imagine one person living in it, or spending one night in it alone)which turns out to come with a ghostly presence. The overall mood and tone of the movie is very dark and sad, I was very moved when the real story behind the haunting came out. There is nothing, in my opinion, more horrific or incomprehensible than murdering a child, for any reason, but this was beyond my worst imaginings. There are many unforgettable images from the movie, most notably, the wheelchair, the ball and the child's voice on the tape recorder, but what I had a hard time getting out of my mind was the music box theme. This is apparently based on a true story, and one can only hope that the real child did not suffer the same fate in the afterworld that this poor little boy did. At times my sorrow and my fear were at odds with each other; suffice to say this is one of the finer, more eloquent, and more haunting of the genre that I have ever seen...

5-0 out of 5 stars Steal from the best they say...
I’ve owned The Changeling for many years first VHS then DVD. When movies like ‘the Ring”, “What lies beneath” and “the Others” came along I noticed something similar to my favorite old ghost story. Michelle Pfeiffer’s character (Beneath) has her first marriage come to a tragic end by a car accident and looses her children. So does George C. Scott in “The Changeling”. She’s a musician (Ditto). Watch the scene in the bathroom and then watch where they got the idea from in “The Changeling”. The neckless in the story is exact as well. Finding the neckless at the bottom of the lake (Beneath) or finding it at the bottom of a well (Changeling)... “The Ring” nabbed some ideas as well (no pun). The tortured child held captive in some upstairs attic is right from “The Changeling”. Finding the body in the well is right from “The Changeling”. The most similar scene I’ve found out of all is the scene from “The Others”. The seance is taking place and the blind women is writing on paper what she is hearing from the ghost in the house. The assistant takes each piece she finishes writing and reads out loud what the psychic has written. Exact same scene in “The Changeling”. The whole Haunted house murder mystery revenge thing is my favorite type of movie. I just kept thinking, watching these “newer” movies, I think I’ve seen this before.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOLLOW THE BOUNCING BALL
This movie is truly a frightening ghost story. Director Peter Medak wisely chose to downplay any gore, instead giving us a series of terrifying sequences, revolving around a bouncing ball, a music box, a child's wheelchair, and a mesmerizing seance. George C. Scott and Trish van Devere play their parts well, with some excellent support from Melvyn Douglas and John Colicos (who in one brief scene signifies true evil). All the elements of good film-making come together in this well-filmed and orchestrated movie. A classic yet to be realized.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST ever suspence horror film!
It is not gory, sorry, I like gore, but at the same time gore need not be a crutch to mess with people's heads, you can acheive the same effect with Skinny Puppy, a walk down a long dark windy woods, or watching a movie like this. I've yet to see one better in the Ghost Story Genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant insights
Errol Morris's stunning documentary is about one of the 20th century's most significant players: Robert McNamara, who reprises the highlights of his life and professional career. The movie covers a lot of ground, including McNamara's stint as a Ford Motor Co. executive, his participation as a war planner in World War II, and his crucial involvement as secretary of defense under President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and under Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War. There are some stunning revelations, including his role in the firebombing of Japan, as well as the nuclear face-off between the United States and Cuba. This is another brilliant coup for Morris, the inspired documentarian who has made a career out of conversations with the most fascinating subjects. He tells a story that knocks you right off your feet.
