5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent film!
This is an excellent film. I think this has an excellent plot. In John G. Avildsen's The Karate Kid Daniel and his mother move from New Jersey to Southern California, where he's not too keen about his new home until he meets Ali and attractive girl who seems to like him. But trouble looms when Ali's ex-boyfriend and his gang of ruffians start tormenting Daniel. One day, as Daniel is suffering a beating at the hands of these louts, Mr. Miyagi an elderly Japanese handyman, comes to his rescue. To Daniel's amazement, Miyagi manages to take down the whole group by himself using karate. Daniel begs to learn this ancient martial art, and soon Miyagi begins the boy's training, teaching Daniel that there is more to karate than fighting. Through a series of lessons, the wise mentor instills a sense of honor and nobilty in his young pupil while preparing him for the ultimate karate showdown. However, as Daniel studies the discipline and art of karate, his enemies are learning a dirtier kind of fighting from Kreese a cold-blooded ex-marine. Ultimately, the boys will fight to the finish in the All Valley Karate Championship in a rousing and triumphant finale. Morita is a gem, as the elderly father figure Miyagi, giving the character warthm, wisdom, and comic charm. macchio's underdog character inspired an entire generation to run out and join the nearest karate school while chanting "wax on, wax off".

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational movie
This is a really great movie about a boy named Daniel who moves from Newark, New Jersey, to a much different atmosphere in Southern California which he didn't like.Thing only got worse when a group of bullies, called the cobra kais, well trained in karate decided to pick on Daniel because he liked the cobra kai leader Johnny Lawrence's(William Zabka)girlfriend. He meets Mr. Miyagi(Pat Morita)who teaches him karate and gets him signed up in a karate tournament. After becoming Ali's(Elizabeth Shue's charcter)boyfriend he fights just about all of the cobra kais until there sensei persuaded Bobby(who was actually a kind hearted character)to take Daniel out of commission.Daniel looked to be done for after he was kicked in the leg by Bobby but Mr. Miyagi did a technique on him so he was able to fight in the final against Johnny. He defeats Johnny in a very inspirational way with the crane technique and wins the title.

This is one of my top ten favorite movies of all time.It shows that if you have a big heart and keep trying you will win in the end.Pat Morita gives one of the best performances ever,Ralph Macchio does a great job as Daniel,Elizabeth Shue does a good job,and i think that William Zabka was an excellent villain. Along with one of the best soundtracks of all time this movie is a must see.I recommend it to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars good movie
This 1984, 'modern classic' by director John G. Avildsen ("Lean On Me"; "8 Seconds") is a solid movie--very entertaining. I'll admit there is nothing truly spectactular about it. Robert Kamen's ("The Fifth Element") writing is good, but nothing truly great. Macchio and Morita put in solid performances. The karate is only mediocre, but the principles aren't exactly martial arts experts. Still, it is one of those films I fondly remember as a child, and one I can still go back to all these years later. It holds up over time.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Wax On, Wax Off, Sand the floor, Paint the house."
This is one of the best teenage movies in 80s. It has lots of good elements, like romance, school problems, great music, fighting combats, and the zen of karate. This is a unique martial arts movie. Most of them focus on fighting combat scenes; however, Karate Kid instead focuses on the mental side: Wax On, Wax Off, Sand the floor, Paint the house, etc. Those are as a matter of fact the defensive techniques for learning blocking. You can see the director carefully sets up two traditional styles of karate: Hard and Soft. Obviously, the Cobra sensai & his students are from hard style, very aggressive & no mercy. In contrast, Miyagi & Daniel are from soft style, focusing on defensive technique and mental training. They meet together finally in a tournament.

For this DVD, it lacks of some extra freebies. Only subtitles and theatrical trailer are included. No deleted scenes, no directory's commentaries, and no documentaries. I'm sure lots of people will appreciate if there's a DVD box set for the entire Karate Kid series with some good extra features.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 80's are back!
"Wax on, wax off" is a catchphrase that will forever be instilled in the human psyche, thanks to the eighties release, The Karate Kid.

Now, as you cringe at the images racing through your head of disco balls, pastels, hair spray and corny one-liners and you decide to bury yourself in a deep hole and hide, dust off the cob webs because no matter how many times you've see it, this is one eighties flick you can't help but love.

Now available on DVD as an Ultimate Collectors Pack, we can relive this inspirational story of courage and friendship.

While teens of today may call this a retro disaster, and use the video cover as a coaster during a drinking fest at one of their underage parties, there's no denying the saying, "an oldie but a goodie" loudly rings true.

Moving to a new home and starting over is never easy. Just ask Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio). Leaving Newark for LA, Daniel's the new kid and he thinks the whole world is coming down on him.

It's all doom and gloom until like any other 16 year old teenager with rushing hormones, meets a beautiful blonde, Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue).

However, Ali brings baggage to the picture, a wild ex boyfriend Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) who also happens to be the leader of the Cobras, a ruthless youth karate gang.

Subject to constant bullying by the cobras, Daniel turns to an unlikely source for help, Japanese war veteran turned apartment block handyman Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita).

Mr. Miyagi, who has been taught karate by his father becomes the helpless teens mentor and teaches him the craft, not as an offensive tool, rather only as a means of self-defence.

After months of unconventional training such as washing cars, sanding decks and painting fences and houses, Daniel's prepped for his toughest battle, a fight against Johnny in the thrilling conclusion. Will good prevail over evil?

It's the finale that's most exciting. My finger is always drawn to the rewind button, where I can't help but recap those final gripping moments again and again.

The youth of today's movie going generation will have a field day laughing at the funky eighties pop music, the tightly worn jeans, and (I must admit) the outrageous hair styles. Despite this, 20 years later, a lot can still be learnt as its messages transcend across the boarder of time.

An everlasting masterpiece the whole family will enjoy, John G. Avildsen's The Karate Kid, the original of the trilogy, is undoubtedly the standout.

Though a little hackneyed and slightly predictable at times, it's the relationship between Macchio's and Morita's finely tuned characters that still make this a heartfelt film, two decades after its cinema release.

It's a shame Ralph Macchio can't brush off that teen type cast. Struggling to get adult roles because of his boy like features is unfortunate as his acting ability is second to none.

It sadly seems he'll forever be remembered as 'The Karate Kid'. A great performance is somewhat to his detriment. Still, only one word can describe this movie, unforgettable...that's for sure!

Dim the lights, heat up the popcorn and enjoy this timeless classic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Haven't we seen this before?
I just saw this movie and found it quite hysterical. There are some movies where the exact same thing happens, just different details. For anyone who has young children or siblings, the have heard of the Disney Original movie "Motorcrossed". In "Motorcrossed" a girl disguises as boy (cuts off her hair, wears baggy clothes, etc...)So she can race in a tournament. At the end of the movie her identity is revealed and the boy who's been helping her and who she's been falling in love with hates her.

Wait, where did we see this? Oh yes, In "Just one of the guys" it seems like "Motorcrossed" is a direct replica of "Just one of the Guys" with a few trivial differences. And what is even more surprising is that both Terry (Just one of the guys) and Andy (Motorcrossed) get the guy in the end. Isn't this just too good to be true?!

Without sarcasm now, I personally think this a although a little John Hughes-y, it is never the less funny and romantic. For any person who loves teenage romance movies (i.e.: Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Can't buy me love) I am telling you see this movie. I promise you will fall in love with Terry (as a girl or a boy).

5-0 out of 5 stars Just one of the best
I'll skip the "over-the-top" superlatives of some of the other reviewers in this group, but "Just One of the Guys" is a fun, intelligent comedy with a host of well-drawn characters large and small. It follows the formula -- but it doesn't. Its comedy is three-dimensional. Although it has much to say about teen angst and growing up, it never takes itself too seriously, so we can laugh along the way. Even the class bully is handled with a sense of humor. You hate him, but that's okay because so does everyone else.
Is the movie dated? Yes, in many respects it represents its decade -- the 80s. But its humor and its message have not dimmed with the years. It's not just a kid's movie, either. I've watched it many times, and at well over 40, I'm no kid. As for Joyce Hyser, she carries the film with grace and humor and a range that would make most of the "big stars" of the movies today jealous (if they understood what she was doing). And -- as has been noted by another reviewer -- only Leonard Maltin among the "official" critics gives this movie a chance. I hope it comes out on DVD, and that it includes an interview with its star and some of the other principals. A real sleeper. Enjoy!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Just One More 80's Teen Comedy
1985's Just One Of The Guys is an implausible, but amusing tale of an aspiring journalist, Terry (Joyce Hyser), who writes an essay about a female disguising herself as a male jock. The essay is rejected and to rebuke the bias she believes was the cause the rejection, tries to live out her premises. Getting a short haircut, wearing baggy clothes and deepening her voice, Terry goes undercover at high school. Since Ms. Hyser hardly has a boyish body, much of the plot revolves around her trying to hide this fact, especially in the boys locker room. Terry has a boyfriend, but she ends up falling for a quiet loner type guy Rick (Clayton Rohner). Finally Terry can't hide her feelings for Rick and the prom, she reveals her true identity by flashing Rick. The best part of the film is the interaction between Terry and her brother Buddy (Billy Jayne). Buddy is a complete pervert with Playboy centerfolds plastered all over his bedroom walls and his lines are the funniest in the film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great flick must see comedy film.
This movie was one of my favorites. She does the one thing she has to do to become a noticed writer. Which was being a guy!!! Before she was a portrayed as a male, everyone assumed she was nothing but all good looks and no brains. She proves them all to be wrong when she comes up with greatest article in the end. A must see for 80's movie fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can You Put a Price on Dignity?
This is the question I constantly ask myself while watching this masterpiece. Rick Morehouse, played by the legendary Clayton Rohner, commands respect when on screen. Rick is a true James Brown enthusiast who feels an impulsive need to dance like a fruit anytime he hears the Godfather of Soul. This movie really has so much to offer but the dignified performance given by Clayton Rohner is what truly captivates me and steals my heart, my mind, and my tears. A true epic. To not buy this movie would be a disservice to you, your family, and the American film industry. Thank you Clayton Rohner. You give me hope, strength, and most of all dignity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable romantic comedy/drama
I found this movie quite by chance in a local video store and decided to see it because Ann-Margret is one of my favorite actresses, not to mention one of the most beautiful women in the world. It also stars the gorgeous Kelly Preston and B-movie king C. Thomas Howell. It starts out as many teen romantic comedies of the '80s, but it has its own flavor and mature themes which make it stand out.
Howell and Preston are boyfriend and girlfriend in smalltown USA. They're about to graduate high school. He wants to go the next level with her, but she's holding back. You get the feeling she's a bit of a shrew as well. Ann-Margret stars as Preston's mom. She has her own baggage with an estranged husband and difficult relationship with her daughter.
After breaking up with Preston, Howell kind of stumbles into a romantic relationship with the Ann-Margret. They feel a strong attraction for each other and consummate their relationship, but it looks like it doesn't have a chance of surviving, what with their age difference and familial scrutiny. Ann-Margret gets pregnant, and how they handle this unplanned event and the future of their relationship is what makes this movie a winner.
There are a number of memorable quirky scenes, like with the pet tiger of the title, and the hilarious outdoors make-out scene with Howell and Ann-Marget when they disturb some wasps. I highly recommend this film.

In the mid-1980s, standup comic Rodney Dangerfield underwent a renewed wave of popularity, finding a surprisingly enthusiastic baby-boomer audience. What else to do but make a movie that shows off Dangerfield's alternately knowing and boorish humor? This may not be on the AFI list of great films, but it delivers laughs aplenty in its story of a rough-edged tycoon who made his fortune in clothes for the stout and tall and decides to attend college in order to be closer to his son (Keith Gordon). There's not much plot, but lots of room for Dangerfield's one-line riffs. The goggle-eyed comic veteran displays surprising charm, enough to make his romance with professor Sally Kellerman believable. Look for cameos by late comedian Sam Kinison and author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars You Are About To Enter A Danger Zone
Aside from the comedy classic ensemble Caddyshack, Back To School is my favorite Rodney Dangerfield film.

Self-made millionaire Thorton Melon (Dangerfield) decides to join his only son, Jason (Keith Gordon), who is having difficulty fitting in, as a freshman in college. This impulse gesture drives Jason a little nuts, while setting Thorton on a path to a little romance with an English professor (Sally Kellerman). He also learns that there are things in life money can't buy, and in the process, somehow becomes the most popular man on campus.

Director Alan Metter allows Dangerfield to do his thing. But also allows him to show a softer side that doesn't seem at all out of place. Don't let that deter you though, there are still plenty of laughs to be had. Gordon is pitch perfect as Jason and provides plenty of grounding as well. The film also boasts solid support from actor Burt Young as Lou, and early performances by Robert Downey Jr. as Derek, Jason's roomie, as well as former Star Trek beauty, Terry Farrell.

Sadly, the DVD doesn't have any "real" extras, save of course, for the film's theatrical trailer. Typical for most MGM releases, the package also includes a "collectible" production trivia booklet. An audio commentary or a few deleted scenes, would have put this disc over the top. Still, this film is a must see, for comedy and Dangerfield fans. It's a very funny movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rodney's All Time Best Comedy Get's Straight A's!
Don't you just miss 80's movies like Back To School? A film starring one of the funniest men on the planet (Mr. Rodney Dangerfield) with an ensemble cast of famous names unto themselves, has got to have SMASH MOVIE written all over it, and it does! A simple premise: Thornton Melon (Dangerfield) has become a wealthy millionaire even though he dropped out of high school, and now his son, Jason (Keith Gordon) wants to drop out of college, so in order to keep him from leaving, Thornton decides to go to college too! There are so many hysterical moments I just can't print them all. But some favorites are the big scene with Sam Kinison as the crazed history teacher, Professor Terguson ("Good teacher. He really seems to care. About what I have no idea".), Thornton doing the Triple Lindey swimming dive (with Derek[Robert Downey Jr.]distracting the rival diving team with loud noise and reflecting light to the face), Thornton's rendition of "Twist And Shout" at a local bar, and of course, the party in Thornton's dorm room, with Danny Elfman's band, Oingo Boingo and a killer hot tub, complete with BUBBLES! ("Now that's what I call marine biology".) But a truly winning comedy can't be completely great without heart, which is what this film has. Keith Gordon (John Carpenter's Christine), who is sorely missed in the acting world since he changed his profession to directing, is great as Thornton's son, Jason, who loves his father a lot but feels like Dad's always trying to do too much to make him happy when all he wants to do is live his own life. Terry Farrell (TVs Star Trek: DS9 & Becker) makes a good love interest for him too. I always knew she'd make a name for herself one day. Of course you can't make this sort of film without the bad guys and both father and son have each of their own: William Zabka (who we all should remember as bad boy Johnnie from The Karate Kid) as Chas, the snotty swim diver, and Paxton Whitehead as Philip Barbay, Thornton's economics professor are both out to give our duo a not so sweet time at college. But with Sally Kellerman as the funloving literature teacher, Diane, helping Thornton with reading (and biology) just made things a whole lot more fun. This film has such a great mix of comic chemistry and one-liners that you may miss after the first viewing from laughing so hard. But it's also a movie that just makes you feel good when it's all over.

The DVD isn't much on special features, only a trailer, which has a scene not in the film of Thornton and his bodyguard, Lou (Burt Young of the "Rocky" movies as Paulie) looking at a college sex book ("Well, they left out the most important thing...where to get it"). But at least they give you a letterboxed version (1.85:1) as well as a full framed version. But for the asking price, this disc is worth it. Maybe someday they'll get the gang together and make a documentary and audio commentary. Until then get this DVD. I haven't seen the picture look this good in years. The VHS pales in comparison.

So, if you're tired of all the bland humor that seems to be coming out of the Hollywood machine these days, go Back To School with Rodney Dangerfield, who will show you just how funny Comedies should be. "Ooh, I'd love to tame your shrew!"

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to recommend
A syrupy sweet story of a dad and his semi-estranged son, this film feels like a low-rated sitcom. Other than a handful of smile moments, it's neither funny or remarkable at all. I'm not sure which of the film's premises are more frightening: Dangerfield the smart, confident, self-made businessman, or Dangerfield the expert diver. It's not that you should avoid it, but there are so many better films to see.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, but make sure you get the NEWER DVD release!
After his appearance on Leno recently, it seems Rodney Dangerfield is losing his touch due to age and his admitted pot smoking. He still had it in Back to School, however. This has always been a good way to spend 90 minutes or so to get some laughs. Along with Caddyshack and Easy Money, it's his best work.

Be careful of which DVD version you buy. There are two floating around out there and they both look the same until you make a close inspection of the back cover. MGM quietly slipped this new transfer out there with the same cover without as much as a peep. The original copy was non-anamorphic widescreen and was a poor transfer with some framing issues. The new one is a great improvement with anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 Surround Sound. You have to look at the bottom left of the back cover. You will see 16:9 Widescreen 1.85:1 versus the old one which did not have the '16:9' printed above the word Widescreen. The free booklet with the older copy was nice but the new anamorphic transfer and 5.1 trump the importance of the little booklet included in the older DVD release. I don't know why they didn't throw in the old booklet but its importance is negligible. You don't buy DVDs for booklets anyway.

One more thing. Always buy DVD releases of films in their OAR(Original Aspect Ratio). Don't buy Fullscreen copies if the movie was originally released in Widescreen to theaters. The only time you should buy (Fullscreen, 1.33:1, 4X3) is if that was the OAR, which is usually only television these days and much older films from the early 50's and beyond. Why would you want to watch a film with the sides chopped off? You'll learn to live with the 'black bars' and realize that you're not losing any picture on the top or bottom.

2-0 out of 5 stars This film stinks
This "comedy" isnt so funny because the acting reeks- Both Keith Gordon (Rodney's son in this film) and Sally Kellerman (the teacher) cannot act, will not act, or refused to do alternate takes, because they are the worst most unconvincing performances ever put on film. Try Easy Money 1983 instead. This is better than Animal House which says absolutely nothing since Animal House is the worst film ever released to the public since motion pictures with sound were invented back in 1929. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better the second time around!
The thing that makes "National Lampoon's European Vacation" stand out from its original predecessor "National Lampoon's Vacation" is the lush, green European scenery combined with the dialogue between the film's characters. Add the delightful comedic talents of Monty Python's Eric Idle, and you have the makings of a hilarious movie, with Idle adding an element of slapstick, screwball physical comedy that occurs with each accident that brings with it a style only Chevy Chase's character, Clark Griswold can create. Dana Hill and Jason Lively fit into their roles as brother and sister Audrey and Russ Griswold quite nicely. Let's not forget the lovely talents of Beverly D'Angelo as Ellen Griswold, whose shower scene in the movie is sort of on the risque side, but ends up being hysterical when she finds it advertised on an Italian billboard due to Clark's accidental videotaping! I did find the kissing scene between John Astin's game show emcee character and the Griswold daughter (Dana Hill) character to be totally inappropriate for a film that the whole family can watch together. If you're into scenic films with a good dose of comedic dialogue and action-adventure, then "European Vacation" is the movie for you! Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Funniest Movie, Ever
First I would like to disagree with all the neagtive comments about this movie. I have probbaly seen it a good 500 times. I have worn out 4 videotapes, so to my surprise and delight, it is finally coming out on DVD. I have searched high and low and always wondered why all the other vacation movies were out but not this one..
Anyway, the entire Vacation series in a nutshell, are brillaint, light hearted movies. Though European was the best. There are fun characters and amazing one liners. I love Clark in Germany and on Pig in the Poke... The kids were cool, I love that Rusty, but Audrey made me ill! Can you pass the crousaints, and the butter and the jelly...yuk.
Overall the plot was fun, they win a trip to Europe, on a fluke...Clark, Thats right..Clark, of Lewis and Clark...And the Griswalds' are our grand prize Pig in a Poke winners...and they allow us access to the American disfuncional family life. I think you can relate cause we all have had family vacationos like that, where dad is frustrated, mom is trying to smooth everything over ( and kidnapped ) and the kids are trying their hardest to be a pain in the rump!
Any way, I am delighted that I can get the DVD, and I am looking forward to the commentary. because one of the beauties of this film, is there are so many slapstick jokes going on in the background. They are not the focus of the scene, so unless you are a obsessed fan like me they would go un-noticed. So I am hoping that the commetary will shed a few secrets that even I was unaware of.

Great movie, definitely check it out! Its a joy! And I recomend that younger kids don't watch, due to adult suggestions... AHHHHH, I love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original, but still good
INTRODUCTION:
National Lampoon's European Vacation was the second film in the Vacation series of films. For many years, the first film has been hailed as a comedy classic, and this one has been all but forgotten. Is this film an underrated masterpiece that is as good as its predecessor, or is it a mediocre entry in the series? Read on for my review.

BASIC PLOT:
The storyline of the film goes something like this. The Griswalds appear on a quiz game show, and (through a rather odd twist of fate) win the grand prize - a tour of Europe. Beverly D'Angelo and Chevy Chase reprise their roles from the previous film. Before long, their vacation in Europe begins - and once again, they find themselves in a so-called vacation in which one thing after another goes wrong - they end up in a cramped hotel room, getting a huge phone charge, and even having their video camera stolen by a French criminal! They even end up accidentally destroying Stonehenge! One thing after another goes wrong once again...

FILM OPINIONS:
This film is not nearly as good as its predecessor, or it's follower, Christmas Vacation, but it's a good film nonetheless. If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one too. Just don't be expecting it to be quite up to the quality of its predecessor.

DVD:
The DVD is severely lacking as far as extras go. We get commentary and trailers, and that's about it. There's really not much other than these things, things that every DVD should have. Still, the actual film is good, and it makes up for this.

OVERALL:
Overall this film doesn't top its predecessor, but it's still damn funny. If you want to laugh, pick it up. You'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Hilarious Sequel to a classic comedy
The Griswalds are on another vacation, but this time, they're going to Europe. This is a hilarious sequel to a classic comedy and it's one of the sequels that lives up to the original. People who hate this movie don't know what they're taling about. This disk isn't anything special, weird menu and hardly any features. The only features on this disk is a commentary by Chevy Chase (which sucked, I'm not kidding) and a theatrical trailer. Pick up this disk but only because it's a hilarious film. ... Read more

Gale force is not necessarily a great B flick, but it's entertaining, takes jabs at reality TV shows and their hosts), has recognizable actors in it that do a decent enough job, and is done well enough to be enjoyable (especially if you like the actors). Though a few scenes of footage are used from other movies (helicopters flying over jungle in Predator, some car stuff and opening concepts from Last Action Hero) such doesn't really bring the picture down. It's meant to be a fun romp, not a spectacular, or entirely original film. Special effects get the job done and aren't too hideous. The kind of movie you might see on a weekend on a miscellaneous cable channel. If you're a fellow Treat Williams fan, I strongly recommend DEEP RISING (a far better fantastic movie), but he's cool in Gale Force as has some fun moments. You might consider turning off Gale Force in the first ten minutes, but it picks up. All in all, a simple flick, with a simple 'who lives and who dies' plot, with some fun moments. It's worth it for the actors, and the jab at reality shows. Good movie to rent on the cheap, or buy in a discount bin somewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars SLOW WINDS A BLOWIN
GALE FORCE is another straight to video that suffers from its lack of creative intelligence. Obviously scenes were stolen from previous movies (see other reviews), and the opening scene does little than to establish Treat Williams as a loose cannon. I will say for Treat that even though he can do much better than films like this, he manages to exude a quiet strength that helps elevate his films. Michael Dudikoff as a villain is novel; Susan Walters needs acting lessons; you never know when Cliff deYoung and Tim Thomerson are going to turn up. The effects are sub par, the pacing erratic, but overall it's an entertaining 90 minutes or so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comedy 'Force!'
...Treat Williams sported a brown leather jacket, red shirt, blue jeans i.e. Jack Slater's wardrobe and his name was Jack, right? The first ten minutes of the movie will leave you disgusted and you'll probably shut it off immediately. But, the main reason to watch "Gale Force" is because of Michael Dudikoff. The American Ninja plays a bad guy for once and he takes care of business. Basically this movie makes fun of reality television shows especially "Survivor." "Treasure Hunt" has brought in a group of people to search for a pot full of ten million dollars. But, a group of pirates (ex-Navy Seals) are scavenging around the island taking down the contestants. That's enough plot. Too much thinking. Jerad (Dudikoff) asks the host, "You think we're ready for primetime?" and then surprises him with a blast! I was amazed to have seen clips of the helicopters flying around from "Predator" in this movie... This movie is horrible, but it can make anybody laugh. A lightning bolt struck two people at the same time, yes! Old Man Withers still has some fight in him. Way too windy for me, the winds looked pretty windy. Oh well, like I said comedy!

1-0 out of 5 stars A horrible film that pokes fun at TV reality shows
Treat Williams has made some bad films, and "Gale Force" is another stinker to add to his filmography. This direct-to-video garbage stars Williams as a LAPD detective who is asked to sign up for a new TV reality show, "Treasure Hunt", after he is suspended from the police force. The film's director (supposedly it's Jay Andrews, not Jim Wynorski) decided to steal some footage and action sequences from other films, such as "Last Action Hero" and "Die Hard". I wonder how the makers of "Last Action Hero" feel about having its car chase sequence being digitally inserted into this film! Anyway, avoid this one at all costs, and pray that Treat Williams' new TV series will be better than this [one].

2-0 out of 5 stars What Could Have Been...
What could have been a REALLY great B Flick with a very different plot ended up just another average B Flick. The plot:"Treasure Hunt" is tv's hottest new reality based show-$10 million dollars is buried on a remote island and it's between 8 contestants to find it and bring it home.(I can hear the idea being pitched now to a major tv studio to actually go through with this) Rogue theives have infiltrated the island and are also looking for the hidden cash but wait another disaster has beset these islanders: a violent tropical storm is heading towards them. Sounds good right? The Bad: Well the opening car chase scene is STOLEN from "Last Action Hero" it is the original scene but edited with Treat Williams in place of Arnold! (Look for the Slater 1 license plate on the car!) Even when the "house" where a hostage is held up blows up (STOLEN from Last Action Hero) it reeks of being from another movie.Didn't the director trust his production company or are B flicks that tight on a budget due to the economy? I thought I could overlook this flaw but alas another scene has a group of ex-Navy Seals flying in by helicopter to the island. This was lifted right from Predator! The somewhat Good:Overall I found it to be entertaining just to find the "borrowed" scenes from better action movies. I was disappointed in Michael Dudikoff playing a bad guy. (First Olivier Gruner in Extreme Honor and now Dudikoff for shame!) Its bad when B actors are playing bad guys instead of the usual "good guy" we see them play in countless other movies. What could have been will probably be when a Big Budget Movie Co. remakes this plot and releases it to a national audience. Bottom Line:Check it out just for a good laugh then check out the better produced movies they borrowed from. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid for a DTV...
UFO LLC is not the film company to go to when you're looking for solid filmmaking or great writing. They're a company that thrives only on its special-effects rather than anything else. Yet for what it's worth, I found "Epoch" to be a very enjoyable movie where I didn't need to think for a bit. Compare it to "Sphere" and it seems like a sci-fi masterpiece! The story is not the usual large-monster horror film like UFO usually does. It's about an alien artifact that is found in Bhutan. The army is sent to investigate it. Many theories rise up and there are a few neat effects sequences. The movie never tries to rise above its own intelligence. It never once insults the intelligence of the viewer, and it never stretches anything out to a ridiculous length. The special effects are extraordinary, the best UFO has ever done. The story is simple enough, but not stupid. True, when you get right to it, it's another direct-to-video movie. But not once does it try to pretend its anything more. I liked it.

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD MOVIE ALERT!
this movie has taught me that live is short and every second precious. do not waste a moment.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not that bad a film.
This isn't as bad a film as some critics make out. I have seen a lot worse and they had a bigger budget than this made for TV movie had. Does anyone remember "Battlefield Earth"? Now that was a film that stank and sank! EPOCH on the other hand is an easy to watch, easy to understand movie that touches on areas that we all know and love.

The plot follows a group of investigators as they struggle to find out the truth behind a strange monolith that has appeared in the middle of nowhere in Bhutan. David Keith is a dying scientist who finds himself cured of a terminal illness after he enters the Monolith. Ryan O'Neil doesn't do too badly as his equally confused colleague trying to keep the Military under control whilst at the same time trying to understand what is happening. The much loved James Avery (from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air) gives a good performance as a military Doctor and the excellent James Hong is cuttingly sarcastic as Chinese Ambassador Po. Add to this a Colonel with a power complex, a Captain whose belief in God comes into conflict with his orders and you have a pretty good film.

The film's overall storyline is that the Monolith intends to "wipe the slate clean and start all over again," because in a nutshell earth and its destructive human population isn't worthy of existing anymore. The Monolith is able to resequence DNA, hence David Keith's miraculous cure and the resurrection of two dead Chinese pilots and a Scientist.

Okay so the special effects aren't all that and a bag of chips, but even with a couple million dollars worth of special effects, "Battlefield Earth" still managed to honk louder than a gaggle geese in a farmyard!

It's not a terribly suspenseful film but it is watchable and not as bad as some people are making out. It certainly isn't cinema quality that is for sure then neither are a lot of movies that make it to the cinema and I don't see them getting panned in the same way. Make your own mind up about this movie, don't expect much other than a nice little movie that you can rent out when there is nothing else available. Like I said, it's not that bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't do it....
I know it's tempting because you can't find it in the video store for rent, but you will have nothing but contempt for yourself if you purchase this disc. It's really really bad. trust me, it's so bad I will not waste anymore time on this review (and I happily own Spacetruckers and Tremor's III).

1-0 out of 5 stars A epic bomb
Washed up, bloated, Ryan O'Neal is the star of this TV flick, so that should give you enough information to know just how bad "Epoch" is going to be. Unfortunately, I bit anyway. What a colossal waste of time. The plot is transparent; the characters, unbelievably shallow, hackneyed and stock. The actors? I've seen better acting in high school productions. They deliver lines about as well as Ackroyd's Beldar from Saturday Night Live. How the producers and directors could have put their names to this time waster is beyond me. Don't be fooled by the cool production art on the DVD cover. This...is of such "Epoch" proportions the fact that it actually was released should be science fiction. I feel like such a fool for having rented it to watch. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars High Voltage for DVD
Now this movie had bad acting, and bad music, but did it deliver on action ! The shootouts in this movie seem straight out of Hong Kong. If you want to see a "B" movie with "A" Quality shootouts then this is for you. ( When did Bruce Lee's daughter look so good)?

2-0 out of 5 stars OKAY
I am a fan of Antonio's but I will speak frankly - this movie was cheesy. It was okay. It is always a thrill to see that hunk -- and an extra thrill to see his father (Good Lord! He is more built than his son! WOW!)-- but the movie was not very good. Sorry-- it's really only for hard core Antonio fans. What's with the marriage scene! That was lame! But overall it is okay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good action picture with a believable plot.
Antonio Sabato Jr. and Shannon Lee do a good and believable job of portraying bad guys being chased by the Vietamese mafia. The surprise appearance by the other Mr. Sabato was a nice touch. Both the leads do well enough with the brawling sequences that no standins were used for many scenes. This lets the camera show the characters faces and bodies while fighting and the crew of this film did a good job with this. This is the first time I saw Bruce Lee's daughter play a significant role in a movie, and I must say I was impressed. Her acting showed good emotional content and her action sequences were well done. She plays a character who works for the mafia but ends up helping Antonio's character out. The body language between her and Sabato was good. I was disappointed that there was not more martial arts type action since I had seen Ms. Lee on Martial Law doing some impressive kicking and tai chi. Maybe her next movie will show off her martial arts talents more. Martial arts action pictures could certainly use a new female lead who can act as well as kick the bad guys. If you like a good action picture with gangsters, a handsome hero, and a beautiful heroine as well as an interesting plot then this movie is for you. Bruce Lee fans may also find it interesting because it is one of Shannon Lee's first appearances, but I expect we will see more of her in the future.

Pick up this disk but only because it's a hilarious film. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Like a Train Wreck
With the variety of entertainment available on today's market, it is rare to find an action film that can actually hold a is even rarer to find one that does so simply due to the poor quality of the film. This movie is so utterly repulsive that one can't help but stare on, fascinated by the sheer lack of imagination, befuddled by the few snippets of dialogue that string together into a "plot" (and I use the term VERY loosley), and generally curious to see just how much worse the movie can get. This movie could be used as a form of capital punishment (as it seems repeated viewing could cause brain atrophy), except that such a punishment would most assuredly fall into the category of "Cruel and Uusual". Actually spending money on movies such as "Shootfighter 2" only encourages studios to produce more of its ilk. In short, not only would I recommend never watching this movie, but I would also recommend that any existing copies be destroyed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average martial arts movie
My only complaint is that I got this movie to see Bolo Yeung and he was really only in 2 fight scenes. It did have some good fights with the other guys though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as the prequel
I saw this film because I'm a fan of Bolo Yeung. It compares well with his other films, especially those from Hong Kong in the 70's which often have poor film quality. The plot was nothing spectacular but it was original. The action scenes were very good. Yeung was mesmerizing in that respect, as usual. Overall I enjoyed the film, and recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MARTIN RABBETT IS THE GOLD IN THIS ADVENTURE!
This should have been an exciting adventure of the Mel Fisher family, searching for sunken treasure, off the Florida Keys. The family was beautiful and close, with Martin Rabbett stealing the show as Dirk Fisher - eldest son and skipper of the family ship. He was energetic, loving, and the only child to show us any excitement for this undertaking. The shortcomings of this movie were found in the lack of characterization. We just didn't get to know these people. Martin Rabbett made a great effort to project his character's personality and to let us know who he was and what he was all about. He has a natural charisma and charm. When he drowns prematurely, it was very sad, because we actually knew enough about his character to miss him. In fact, after his death, it was easy to lose interest in this film, because the only REAL person was gone. Except for Martin Rabbett - the actors should have been searching for their characters as ardently as they searched for the treasure. Unfortunately more than treasure was lost in this movie!

1-0 out of 5 stars what a con

It is not the big karate of the year, but it has very nice karate moves. Its the story of a boy trying to build his confidence, by searching the power within the ring, which a karate master gave to him. If you are looking for a high tech movie, this is not the one you are looking for.

John G. Avildsen not only directed Rocky, he tried remaking it over the years in a dozen different ways. One of them was this popular 1984 drama about a new kid (Ralph Macchio) in town targeted by karate-wielding bullies until he gets a new mentor: the handyman (Pat Morita) from his apartment building, who teaches him self-confidence and fighting skills. The screen partnership of Macchio's motor-mouth character and Morita's reserved father figure works well, and the script allows for the younger man to develop sympathy for the painful memories of his teacher. But the film's real engine, as with Rocky, is the fighting, and there's plenty of that. Elisabeth Shue is on board as the girl the klutzy Macchio dreams of winning. The DVD release features a theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, full-screen (pan and scan) presentation, and optional subtitles in French, Spanish, and English. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

Dim the lights, heat up the popcorn and enjoy this timeless classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Awesome movie! Shove over Anaconda!"
Although the "Anaconda" snake affects were much better, this still is a good movie. "Python" does have its share of gore and sexuality, but not language (which doesn't really matter to me). I liked the performances by Robert Englund and Casper Van Dien. Van Dien played Special Agent Parker, Robert Englund was Dr. Rudolph. Van Dien was really cool in this movie, although he looks sort of rediculous with that mustache. In the movie, Van Dien has an English accent but at the same time he has a Southern drawl. The scene at the beginning with the two women was NOT cool, but the very first sequence with the plane crash is awesome, probably my favorite scene. One of my biggest complaints is the Python's roar, it sounds like it came from an early '50s horror movie. A good roar for this big snake would be the combination roar of a T-Rex from "Lost World" and the "Predator", but I guess this one is fine too. One of my other complaints is the scenes that show the Python's snake-skin, it's way to small for a 170 foot reptile. I wish the 20th Century Fox would combine the monster from the movie "Crocodile" with this Python. In other words the Python and Crocodile should fight each other. Or at least there could be a sequel where the Python returns with another snake. Buy the movie it's great!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Snnnaaaaaakkkeeee!
Okay let me start by saying this movie does not take itself seriously. Whew! Too many times a film of this kind can't quite figure out what it wants to be. Not a problem here. It's all tounge and cheek . William Zabka(The bully from the Karate Kid and Just one of the Guys) Plays Deputy Greg, a Small town Deputy Sherrif Who just never left town to become that hotshot FBI agent. He's got bigger problems, seems a military flight carring a VERY LARGE and VERY HUNGARY Experimental Snake has gone down in the woods surrounding the small town of Ruby. The rest as they say is history. Robert England and Casper Van Dien also show up to hunt the Great and Hungary Beast The Dvd itself has some nice extras and a great 3D Menu. It looks and sounds great. If you liked Anaconda you'll like Python.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sssssssssssss-ucks!
Wil Wheaton stages a comeback! Hooray! Actually, he's just there to get eaten, somewhere towards the end of the movie. And whoopee!!!-a Jenny McCarthy cameo, too! (Sorry, boys. She keeps her top on.) I have to ask: can a big snake really knock someone's head off with its tail in one swipe? Seriously, I want some biology experts to weigh in on this. I have to know, just to restore some of McCarthy's character's well-earned dignity.
But wait... here comes Robert Englund of "Nightmare on Elm Street" fame! Surely HE will make this movie worth watching! Unfortunately, after countless scenes of stroking the python's fragile ego, he wanders off to get killed somehow. (A disappointment, really. I propose another sequel... "Freddy vs. Python"!)
By the way, everything else about this movie is terrible, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally In Your Face
This movie definitely earns it's title-I can't think of another movie off the top of my head that deserves the title "Python" more than this movie. I don't know if they got the same snake from Anaconda, but they might have-he is totally in your face and outrageous-a reptile for the new millenium! You've gotta see him knock these humans into submission! I love the scene where the Python calls them and when they trace the call it's coming from downstairs in their own house!

This film was hard for my sister to watch because she was attacked by a snake as a child, but the film was pretty even-handed and let you see things from the snake's point of view, so I think maybe she came to terms with her fear through understanding. Some of my friends (including Billy) complained that the film's hard-earned realism was hurt by all the cameos, but I thought the scene where Regis Philbin and Cher blasted the Python to kingdom come was awsome! People call this kind of movie a guilty pleasure, but it makes you think about reptiles, and therefore is more informative and important than movies like Mystic River (which, by the way, isn't even a true story).

3-0 out of 5 stars good but not great
I thought Python was really good, and I know a lot of people didnt like it,but I think there big dumbos. It has lots of gore, like when the women gets her head choped off by the pythons tail and lands in the guys lap. It then pukes acid on the guy,and burns him to nothing but bones and blood. Its when two men are carrying a huge python on a plane and it gets out of its cage.He eats the crew and the plane crashes near a town called Ruby.First it kills a lesbian couple. Then it starts killing the locals one
