4-0 out of 5 stars The Wild Geese
This is one of the best made and realistic mercenary action adventure movies ever made. The film depicts how it happens in the real world how mercenaries are hired to go on a mission but are then left out to dry after a deal is struck between the adversaries. They then have to improvise their way out from deep within enemy territory and they even have room for honor and idealism and payback. It reminds me of a modern version of the Magnificent Seven with similar star power with Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Roger Moore and other good actors better known in the UK. I just wish it was available on video again. I would certainly purchase it and so would many other fans of quality action adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the BEST WAR drama
The WILD GEESE demonstrated, unequivocally, that Officers are indeed GENTLEMEN. These men (Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, Hardy Krooger, etc,) are extra-ordinary mercenaries, they have scruple. These bunch would not do just anything for money, they are on the side of good, and goodness saw them through all the dangers they faced in the jungle of South Africa when they were abandoned. It is not just a war about killing, but of killing evil dead in all its forms. There are many real life issues that touched the heart, and are so very well dramatized that every scene arrests a viewers attention. This movie has every emotion in it, humour, actions, espirit de corps, sorrow, losses, recovery of humanity and new understandings, etc. It started with Roger Moore refusing to be a cocaine pusher, to Richard Harris failing to fulfill his promises of a wonderful Christmas holiday to his only son because of a heart wrenching tragic event, to Hardy Krooger (a black hating South African)finding a new understanding of humanity and friendship in the black president Limbani they went to rescue. It ended by paying treachery in its own coin. Just when the doer proclaimed peace a sudden distruction landed on him. A clear lesson for discerning minds. It is a movie I have watched over and again many years ago, and still long to see it again. BRING IT OUT AGAIN, and "Shout at the Devil".Many would love it for Christmas. I am hoping it would come out in DVD version suitable for the USA viewers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic 70s Study in Moral Ambiguity
Murderers and mercenaries with conscience? The scene where Roger Moore forces a dope dealer to eat a bag of heroin is particularly disturbing. That, and the sacrificial ending, which I will not spoil.

I loved this film as a kid. This, and the excellent (and available) "The Dogs of War" are two of the best mercenary films ever produced.

As a fan of Burton, Harris and even Moore, I would love for somebody to finally release a region 1 version of this film on DVD. They've already done the telecine for region 2, so what's the hold-up?

Oh, and Hardy Kruger is great, too--as he was in "The Flight of the Phoenix."

PLEASE RELEASE THE REGION-1 DVD!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE WILD GEESE" Soar
Like everyone else who has discussed this extraordinary film, I implore the powers that be to please release it on dvd as soon as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burton, Harris and Moore are excellent...
I am truly a fan of great films and this is arguably my favorite. The synopsis has been given in previous reviews here so I will avoid a lengthy description...this is probably the best mercenery film made to date, and films like "Tears of the Sun" pale outlandishly in comparison. I encourage all to sign up on the waiting list to hopefully persuade the studio to release this on DVD. Hard to believe ALL the second rate sequels, which star none of the original cast, are readily available on either DVD or at least VHS and it is next to impossible to find a good used copy of this, which has been out of print for some time. My VHS copy is getting worn and I feverishly await the DVD release!! ... Read more

Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn 15 years after his enormously popular Zulu. Set in 1879, this film depicts the catastrophic Battle of Isandhlwana, which remains the worst defeat of the British army by natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16-to-1 by the Zulu tribesmen. The film's opinion of events is made immediately clear in its title sequence: ebullient African village life presided over by King Cetshwayo is contrasted with aristocratic artifice under the arrogant eye of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the heart of all that goes wrong, initiating the catastrophic battle with an ultimatum made seemingly for the sake of giving his troops something to do. His detached manner leads to one mistake after another, and this is wryly illustrated in a moment when neither he nor his officers can be bothered to pronounce the name of the land they're in. That it's a beautiful land nonetheless is made clear by the superb cinematography, which drinks in the massive open spaces that shrink the British army to a line of red ants. Splendidly stiff-upper-lipped support comes from a heroic Burt Lancaster and a fluffy, yet gruff, Bob Hoskins. Although the story is less focused and inevitably more diffuse than the concentrated events of Rorke's Drift which followed soon after, Zulu Dawn is an unflinchingly honest depiction of British Imperial diplomacy. --Paul Tonks ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Love this Movie!
I highly recommend this movie to all war or history buffs. This movie is based on the true story of the Battle of Isandlwana in south Africa .The battle was fought on Jan. 22nd 1879 between the 24th regiment under the command of Lt.Gen. Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu nation under King Cetshwayo. To make a long story short, The Zulus crushed and wiped out the entire British regiment largely in part because they outnumbered the British 24,000 to about 1,500, but also due to British arrogance(Which is pointed out time and time again in this movie)and the lack of respect and where abouts of the enemy. An allstar cast including Peter O'toole and Burt Lancaster Star in this Classic. The only Bad thing about this movie is that it is no longer in print, which to me is a real travesty, considering all the garbage that was made that still is in print. In fact i had to buy this movie off an online auction. I hope that the Movie Company that made this Great film comes to it's senses and Redistributes this movie so that it can be enjoyed on DVD as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disaster at Isandhlwana
ZULU DAWN is a superb companion film to the classic ZULU, particularly since both films were written by the same man, Cy Enfield. ZULU DAWN climaxes with the Battle of Isandhlwana, which immediately preceded the Battle of Rorke's Drift, accurately portrayed in ZULU. While the Battle of Isandhlana is important, the real significance of ZULU DAWN lies in its revelation of how the British governor of South Africa orchestrated the war against the Zulu. Moreover, the British governor, Sir Henry Bartle-Frere, acted against the wishes of Queen Victoria and Parliament, resulting in the bloody defeat and near annihilation of the British 24th Regiment of Foot at Isandhlwana. The arrogance and carelessness of the British is shocking and the humiliating defeat of the British army in South Africa strikes the viewer as completely justified. The fact that good copies of ZULU are hard to find is pitiful enough, but the unavailability of ZULU DAWN is a real tragedy. It's extremely difficult to rent; it's been out of print so long that most recent video rental establishments have never been able to acquire it. I myself have only encountered two copies for sale ever, and I bought both of them (one went to my uncle, who turned me on to ZULU DAWN in the first place). Keep an eye out for ZULU DAWN in used video stores and exchange shops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Less Heroics, More History
I really wish this would come out on DVD, it is an excellent movie. This is the 'prequel' to the Stanley Baker. . .and introducing Michael Caine. . .epic, 'Zulu.' While made almost 15 years later, it completes the story. This movie has a much more interesting cast and more accurately shows the fact that the British were the aggressors in this war. The Battle of Isandhlwana was, and is, the single most disastrous defeat of the British Army, and one brought on by the hubris of the commanding officers and the politcal operatives of the British Government. I really like this movie and have it on VHS, but it is getting worn out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cry me a 'River,' Put on DVD now!
A lost city in the Amazon jungle has John Hamilton (Michael Dudikoff) interested. There are riches hidden below, but unfortunately for he and his crew, there is a sadistic doctor there still performing offbeat operations. Disease ridden and strange tribes are spread out through the "River of Death" and the group either survives or perishes by the end of the story. The movie based on Alistair MacLean's novel is pure genius (never read the book). If I knew a river was called the "River of Death," then I wouldn't go into it. No casual swim, no fishing. Probably infested with piranha, anyway, those tribesmen needed to save makeup time for their Barbies. Why couldn't those people take a shower? If you want to stay healthy, all you have to do is stay clean. Common sense. Michael Deitykoff is a genius once again. Please put this movie on DVD right now! MGM needs to release all of Michael Dudikoff's movies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Actually, 2,5 stars...
This is just ok. Nothing else. But don't waste money buying it. There are MUCH better action movies...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great action adventure
I didn't realize this was an Allistair MacLaine story. There are plenty of neat twists to keep you interested. I always have liked adventure stories that involve a group of colorful heroes/characters who go jungle adventuring together and you try to determine who will live or die by the end. This isn't a perfect movie, but fun. Personally, my favorite Dudikoff role.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ernest's downfall
I've always pretty much liked the Ernest movies. Yes, they are silly and whatnot but they were always funny and I can't think of another actor who can make such funny faces. Unfortunately, in this one the budget was seemed to have been kept to a maximum of about 200 bucks. It's very low budget and it was dissappointing to see Ernest in something so stupid.
The story was cheesy, flimsy, and stupid. The actors (excluding Ernest himself) were horrible, and it was altogether just cheesy. Ernest also wasn't very funny in this one at all. His co-star, that dumb waitress who goes along with Ernest to Africa was so mean and stupid I just wanted to slap her across the face. Anyways, there's not much to say about this movie except if you want some real Ernest, I'd suggest "Ernest goes to Jail","Ernest Scared Stupid", or "Ernest goes to school."

4-0 out of 5 stars COMEDY CLASSIC!
One of the series' best finds Ernest in love and on the run from jewel thieves in Africa. It's great to see Ernest in such an exotic setting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost realistic
In this film, Ernest wants a date with Renee, the waitress at a local diner. She considers herself to deserve more than this Mr. Nobody. At the advice of the other waitress, Ernest tries to win Renee's heart with a gift. Unfortunately, while shopping for the gift, he gets mixed up in a jewel theft involving stolen African treasure. That lands both Renee and Ernest in Africa, where they must try to evade capture by competing teams of jewel thieves. While in Africa, Ernest gets to try out an extended scene with the old lady in the green dress, and he does a masterful job as an Indian swami.

The first time I saw this movie, I thought it lacked continuity. I found it somewhat strange to see Indians, Arabs, and Brits mixed in with the African characters, and I thought that Varney had gotten his geography thoroughly confused this time. I also found the stereotypes that he was playing with a bit offensive- -many of the characters certainly aren't politically correct. However, after seeing the film again after living years in the Middle East, I can now recognize the characters easily, and they are incredibly realistic and very funny indeed. Varney must have spent some time in East Africa before making this film. While he was there, he no doubt visited an Arabic palace in Zanzibar, had some run-ins with Indian servants and British hunters, and met some friendly tribesmen who taught him some key phrases in a Bantu language. Unlike some of Ernest's more kid-centered movies, this film doesn't have a moral theme. It's just Ernest on safari.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe he's too funny to be appealing.
I saw this movie today and the one thing that disgusted me about this movie more than anything was that woman Renee. She totally deceived a funny, warm-hearted guy who really had feelings for her. How bitchy she treated him was in my opinion absolutely uncalled for. All he wanted was for her to be his girlfriend, but all he got was hurt feelings and deception instead. She was mean and what I'd rather see in a movie is a nice woman who gives the hero the love and romance he deserves.

I hope you see my point in my sincere interview.
Steve

5-0 out of 5 stars one of my favorites
this one of those movies that never won an academy award,
probably got mediocre reviews, and has been largely forgotten
by the movie-going public. for me, however, it is one of those movies that i never tire of seeing over and over. christopher lee gets to
do deadpan comedy and rest of the cast do a terrific job of
dealing with the african desert. stockard channing has to cope
with a baby baboon climbing over her for most of the movie and it is interesting to see her professionalism in handling it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Journey To The Center of my Soul
Cunning. Ingenious. Skillful.

There are words that accuratly describe the Harry Hurwitz masterpiece know as Safari 3000. Hurwitz, who had directed such cinematic gems as 1994's Fleshtone and 1984's No Tell Hotel, hones in on greatness in his Junior effort. Set in the large and wild country of Africa, David Carradine and Stockard Channing team up as stunt-man and writer, competing to win an international road-race. There are many elements of this movie that are extremely rewarding, expecailly how Hurwitz decided to set the movie in Africa. What a joy! Now Africa has the distinction of gaining notiriety from not just Safari 3000, but Ace Ventura Two When Nature Calls, Ernest Goes to Africa, and Shaft in Africa. When did this country get so popular? If you havent seen this cult classic, by all means go to your local Blockbuster and demand that the inept teenage chashier orders five, if not ten copies. We all have a chance of dying as each day passes. Not seeing this film would be a sin, unless your "special" like Timothy Rice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Safari 3 thoustastic
If I were only allowed to use one word to summarize this movie, I would choose, marvelous. This movie is pure cinematic genius, its clever plot interwines three main conflicts. One being the classic love/hate relationship between the guy from Kung Fu and the woman from West Wing. The other spicy conflict involves a couple of british men who dress up like aliens, these men seemingly have some sort of gruge against the Kung Fu guy. It could be because he's Asian, although they don't dwell much on the ethnic perspective of this movie. These british aliens are bent on destroying the chances of the Kung Fu guy and the West Wing girl winning the coveted Safari Cup. However, the man from Kung Fu is strong of mind and body, and he easily overcomes the paltry attempts of the british aliens. In a wonderfully cinematogored scene the two lovers romp in a large mud puddle created by a sceneic rainstorm. It brought a tear to my eye. As you can see this movie has a very realistic good vs. evil elemnt to it. I fully recomend this movie to all.
Timothey Rice is stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Fun
Safari 3000 has a delightful graininess that makes it feel real. It could be a wholesome cult film, if such a thing is possible. It's an adventure movie, but only one person gets killed. The characterization is superb. David Carradine and Stockard Channing are a team that have entered a three-day road race across Africa. He's a Hollywood stunt man determined to win, and she's just there to write a story for her magazine. Christopher Lee, their nemesis, is a ruthless rich Italian nobleman who wears a Darth Vader helmet. This movie appeals to those who enjoy characterization and a lively pace.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice attempt, Bad results
If you are looking to laugh outloud while watching a movie, then buy this movie right away and watch it. However, you will only be laughing at the utter stupiditiy that must have gone though the minds of the directors while making this film. With no big name stars, and basically no plot at all, this film amazingly earned 2 stars in this review because it made me laugh at it's simple, pathetic attempt at cinema. An international race through the African Safari? Wow! I do not know where the idea for this film came from, nor do I really care to find out. I am glad I watched it however, because now I have the honor of claiming that I have seen the worst movie ever produced in the history of film making. Own it. Watch it. Laugh at it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars swell pulp fun
I'd never heard of this movie, but it was cheap and the cover looked good so I picked up the DVD. This is such a great little movie! it should really appeal to fans of pulps, men's adventure books, and B movies. The guy playing Jake is perfect. John Hurt makes the best bad guy. I loved H.A.R.V. (Heavily Armored Raid Vehicle)!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pulp fiction brought to life on the big screen
The characters are underdeveloped and one-dimensional; the soundtrack is only a shade better than the synth-pop soup of "Day of the Dead"; the actors sound like they're reading directly off an unrevised script; and the plot is about as loose and messy as a rice krispie marshmallow treat. All these little nuances aside, "Jake Speed" has got to be, hands-down, the greatest action/adventure B-movie I've ever seen. The title character (played brilliantly by unassuming "everyman" Wayne Crawford) is a bona-fide dime novel adventurer, seeking to defeat the nefarious forces of evil with the aid of his disturbingly effete partner Des and ingenious little innovations such as "The Kid" (a super-powered automatic shotgun!) and H.A.R.V. (an armored Jeep with side-mounted machine gun turrets!). As you might expect, moral absolutism (the titanic, interminable struggle of the good heroes vs. evil villains) and cheap sensationalism abound, just as they would in any good piece of bad action-melodrama. If you're in the mood for a cute, tongue-in-cheek, low-budget iteration of early-twentieth century action serials or just one laugh after another from a ceaseless torrent of cheesy heroic one-liners, pick up your copy of "Jake Speed" today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Action Hero Movie
One of the few action hero movies I like, the story has a great twist, sound track good , picture even better, this is a movie to have fun whilre watching, not a great story but keeps you interested, if you like Remo Williams, Buckaroo Bonazi, X-men then you'll like this movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look if you like the off-beat.
Not my favorite, but up there somewhere, away from the bottom of the list. It is a cute little action-fantasy with a unique twist (the adventurers document and sell their adventures as fiction) and some interesting philosophy "if you want/need something badly enough, it will happen". One of those culty type movies where only those that "get it" enjoy it but worth the effort. Always remember: If you want to be entertained, see a movie. If you want to be enlightned, climb a mountain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "B" movie ever made.
This cute movie is a treat if you have ever read an action-adventure paperback. J.S. is a spoof of the genre but can stand on its own as an exciting adventure. It was filmed on location and has breathtaking African scenery. The film has an above average soundtrack for this type of movie. 1-0 out of 5 stars diamonds, lying, b-movie, lost plot....ec..
Although I am not a fan of any of the actors involved with this movie I have been spending alot of time trying to find it. I was looking for a telly savalas movie from 1975 called "Diamond Mercenaries" and the reason was that I own a landrover and they destroy many series landrovers in this film. Like I said it was a b-movie although an allstar cast but without the plot to match ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly remarkable!
This could possibly be the best terrible movie ever. The acting is... stunning, the plot and writing are laughable, and the props... oh my, the props... Imagine, for a moment, the glory of special forces riding around a lake in neon jet skis shooting fireworks off them. Apparently they were using the Las Vegas camouflage scheme. This movie was good for many a hearty laugh, and I'm disappointed that it's not for sale as a DVD.

3-0 out of 5 stars fair
Slow moving.Liked Kraft as a villain. Had humor but could've been more vicious.Frank Zagorino stiff as usual and not a character worth rooting for. Very scary to think how easy it is to get one's hands on a missle. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CORNIEST MOVIE EVER!!!
The action scenes in this movie were horrible. The music is a joke. DO NOT BUY THIS. The special effects were the worst i have ever seen in my life. And the ending...no comment on that one, just bad. This makes the real delta forces look like losers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Delta Force saves New York City!
This film has become one of my favorites of all time! The action in this movie is virutally non-stop and Delta team characters are fun to root for. The Director Mark Roper does an awesome job with a low budget; his battle scenes are more intense and exciting than any Bruce Willis type movie. The soundtrack was also well done as it helped bring more drama to the heroic scenes. The shots of the Statue of Liberty at the end were cool. Overall, if you like patriotic action movies where the good guys kill all the bad guys, then you should buy Operation Delta Force III - Clear Target. Easily the best of the whole series.

If you have a sense of humor and don't take things too seriously, you will adore this underrated gem. Good show for kids of all ages. 2-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye, 50 Minutes
Africa Blood and Guts is Africa Addio with 50 of its 138 minutes cut out of it. The people responsible for Mondo Cane went into Africa in the 1960s to record the chaos that ensued after European colonialists began to withdraw after exploiting its people and resources for years. Africa Addio is still one of the most powerful and shocking documentaries ever made, and is still pertinent (those responsible for screwing up Iraq should take note of its lessons). Distributor Jerry Gross took the original film, stripped it of all its historical context and political savvy, and released what is basically just a gross-out film under the more sensational title "Africa Blood and Guts".

Blue Underground has released the uncut Africa Addio in its uncut version as part of the Mondo Cane collection. Get that instead if you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars The apparently lost Africa Addio
Africa Addio is one of the greatest achievements of documentary film making. It presented a balanced view of the white and black situation in Africa. But beware the picture was reedited for reissue with Sweet Sweetbacks Bad Song. It was redited and they totally destroyed the delicate balance of the original to pander to the urban black audiences. This is the version that seems to be available today. What a shame and an insult to two great film makers.

4-0 out of 5 stars An unblinking eye
Good but not great document on the savagery of post-colonial africa. If you do not want to know the truth about those dark day's just close your eye's and look away, and look for another film.Just remember that the film's visual's are pretty bad and some part's are kind of boring. But where else can you see the naked truth laid out before you? From tribal slaughter, unresricted poaching and just general choas. The last 15-20 min. is worth the price of the film, showing Mike Hoare's Mercenary group in heavy action against the Simba warriors, the only such footage that I know to exist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage,garbage,garbage!...
This is the worst propaganda film I have ever seen.First of all I ordered Africa Addio and recieved Africa Blood and Guts, seconcondly it started out as a national geographics documentary, and evolved to the worst piece of garbage with it misrepresensations, out right lies and degradingf portrayals of africans .I wish I had my money back

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Not the original

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this the World's most idiotic movie?
Want a belly laugh on video tonight? Forget Sandler, Carrey and Murphy... to laugh yourself stupid, this is the place to be. A project obviously designed as an extended field trip for mental defectives, this shocker is up there with anything Ed Wood ever threw out there. The alleged story goes like this: a cluster of revolutionaries (led by the wildly overacting- not to mention thoroughly inebriated- Oliver Reed) seize control of a small Carribbean island by slaughtering all of its inhabitants, except for a band of American students who attend a college based there. They plan to use the students as collateral in their negotiations with the US Government. However, they didn't count on one of the students calling in his brother...

Introducing ex-soldier-cum-dragcar racer Blaine Striker, played by James Ryan, who is not so much the poor man's Sylvester Stallone, as much as his desitiute kids' Jan Michael Vincent. Striker rallies the students together to rise up against the errant soldiers, by ever-so-sneakily stealing their weapons and running in and out of warehouses storing copious amounts of warheads. Naturally, this goes completely unnoticed by the "crack military force" that holds them. (Think "The Monkees" with semi-automatic weapons, and you're getting close.) This is where the plot pretty much substitutes cliches and idiocy for mayhem and idiocy...

This movie will lead you to ask many questions... How could a movie with such a sure-fire "Rambo with co-eds" concept possibly miss? What exactly do the soldiers want? Why are they wearing war paint? Why does Ryan have to flex every single muscle in his body at all times, and still struggle for definition? Why was Ollie Reed allowed to drink and act? How exactly do you knock a man down with punches that don't connect? Why would a fisherman, plying his trade, stow away in a box and carry a pistol? (You'll realise what I mean when you see it... but you won't believe it.) How exactly does someone acquire money to make junk like this? I know that this is said about many movies, but this time, it's actually true: there are scenes in this movie that have to be seen to be believed. Living cinematic proof that human ineptitude has no real limit... ah, well... at least we get to see the late Ollie the way we fondly remember him. Getting hammered. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a 'total recall' ...
when this movie came on my cable server, i looked it up on amazon to see what was up. when i saw that it had not been reviewed, i decided to watch it, to see if i could help. ...this picture is not even bad enough to be good. it's just not good.
an ex-government 'highly-trained killer' (you were the best of the worst, son) has his memory tampered with by his ex-commanders, but starts getting it back by dint of several implausable occurences. the action sequences that follow are unconvincing, unbelievable, and derivative. the acting is, well, i'm sorry, but words fail me here. the father 'fessing up, any scene in which the son, sean, appears ...
i mean, i really like court-room scenes, but these court-room scenes are just awful, so manipulated as to be simply ludicrous (how many times can a judge say, 'this is turning into a circus'? i believe that this movie holds the world record for this banality catagory).
is there anything redeeming here? yes. the female lead, kimberly kates, enchanted me (the male lead is presumably a 'hunk', but that's not my department). i even thought that she delivered her impossibly hackneyed lines with verve and flair, but as i mentioned, i may have been enchanted. she did enchant me. let's hope that she gets many more roles, because i want to see her again, but maybe not at the cost of sitting through this turkey again (but i will if i have to, as i said, she enchanted me)
in short, this is not a movie to avoid, it is just a movie to ignore.

2-0 out of 5 stars do not buy !
