Another of Disney's efforts to create a quickie animated feature film out of one of its daily TV shows, this one plays like a low-rent reworking of Aladdin. Still, with Scrooge McDuck (voiced by Alan Young) and nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, there's fun to be had. And that includes the genie (voiced by comic Rip Taylor) and the villains voiced by Christopher Lloyd and Richard Libertini. The plot centers on Scrooge's search for lost treasure; the kids come up with the magic lamp with the genie in it, which is sought by an evil magician. Everyone gets into the act of making wishes and seeing them come true, until the bad guy gets a hold of the lamp. Mostly for young viewers. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Movie, But Limited Viewability
I was always a fan of the DuckTales series as a child, but even then found this movie to be dissapointing. It's a cute movie, and has great characters to work with, but it lacks the charm and fast pace of the show. Kids may become restless watching it (I know I always did) as it tends to drag its feet a bit. Most of the jokes of the Geenie are stale and fall flat.
The familiarity of the classic characters does make it a good comfort movie. I don't care for the central villain, Merlock, who never comes across as particularly menacing, but his sidekick Dijon is a nice addition and provides some comic relief while fitting in with the true DuckTales style.
This movie is worth viewing once or twice, but you might opt to rent it rather than purchase it, as it's not something that will hold your interest if you watch it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Movie
If you are a fan of the older disney movies, than Treasure of The Lost Lamp is a must have. Even today, I still love to watch this amazing movie. DuckTales Treasure of The Lost Lamp is great for all ages.

The only improvement needed is to make Treasure of The Lost Lamp a DVD. Even on the old VHS, it still deserves a 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars i love it!!
this is the best & most underrated disney movie ever... love it as a kid... i wish i would see it ungain... i especially like the part where weddy stuffed animals come to live & attack the genie & run rampant... funny part & the rest of the movie is perfect... dont miss it if u love this stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney's feature-length DuckTale is a lot of fun
The first of Disney's attempts to make some quick bucks from a feature based on one of their daily TV series, "Treasure of the Lost Lamp" sprawned from the enjoyable 80's cartoon series DuckTales and is likewise animated by the TV department. In this big-screen goround, Scrogue McDuck (Alan Young) travels with his nephews and niece Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby (all Russi Taylor) in search of Collie Baba's legendary treasure. They are persued in this quest by powerhungry sorcerer Merlock (Christopher Lloyd) with the reluctant assistance of his henchmen Dijon (Richard Libertini) and escape with their lives - but without most of the treasure. The kids release a geenie in the lamp when Webby is cleaning her "teacup" and have fun making crazy wishes (such as turning Webby's stuffed toys into real live animals.) But Merlock, the geenie's former master, is hot on their trail and hell-bent on reclaiming the lamp and the power of the geenie at any cost.

All this plays out like a workprint version of Disney's classic "Aladdin," which debuted two years after the DuckTales release, but that's not nessesarily a bad thing. There's a lot to like about "Treasure of the Lost Lamp," and a lot of fun to be had here, including many comic moments. Also, the breezy 74-minute runtime is just right for young viewers' attention spans. While the visiuals and somewhat choppy editing are nothing compared to the Feature Animation-created Disney efforts of the time, the movie recaptures the look, feel, and spirit of the TV show, making it good fun for fans and a very worthile watch for others. In fact, it's best to think of this as an episode of the TV show with an extended runtime. When you use that point of view with this film, you'll have a lot of fun following the epiosodic adventures of the characters. The opening sequences while searching for (and finding) the treasure feel a lot like an animated Indiana Jones and it's a shame there wasn't more time put into this part of the story.

All in all "DuckTales" provides a solid, simple and entertaining story, great vocal delivery from all the cast (most noteable in this department is Christopher Lloyd as the villian), and a lot of laughs with genuine humor behind them. Highly reccomended viewing for a lazy afternoon, but this might not stand up to repeated showings unless you're a big fan of the show. If you are a fan, don't hesitate to buy this - you'll be pleased. Others who just want a taste of what the show was like, this will fit the bill nicely and is suited to a rental.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best movie!
This movie was a childhood classic. This movie is funny, interesting, and it grabs your attention. It's hard to walk away from once you start it, and even though I've seen it dozen's of times there is always something new or something that you never really "saw" what it was. This is definetly a movie every kid should see....at least once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Another Disney Classic
This definitely is a Must See Disney Classic. It tells you the great story of a Christmas carol and at the same time the Disney's character's personalities fit the character that they are playing. It is especially great for children who would be bored hearing the story while the movie keeps them entertained by bringing in Disney characters.

I definitely recommend this movie, but I would also tell you to read the book, because it is also a real classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disney does "A Christmas Carol" as an animated short
The only real complaint about "Mickey's Christmas Carol" is that it only runs 25 minutes, which means the story gets a bit rushed. The rest, such as the idea that Goofy should play Marley, is just quibbling (Goofy has the height to make it work). On the plus side of the ledger is the on-point casting of Uncle Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer, Mickey Mouse as Bob Crachit, and Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Historically "Mickey's Christmas Carol" was important for Disney because it was the first animated Mickey Mouse short in thirty years. Since these are the Disney characters inhabiting the familiar roles from "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, you end up with a winning combination of goofy humor and warm sentiments. However, you cannot help but thinking that given the creativity of Disney, even in those dark days six years before "The Little Mermaid" brought back the magic, this could have been a pretty good feature length animated film. Compared to other Disney animated shorts, "Mickey's Christmas Carol" is a five. But compared to other versions of "A Christmas Carol," this one is just short of the top tier. Worth having? Absolutely. But just make sure it is not the first version of this Christmas classic that the small fry see. They should appreciate the original holiday lesson taught by Dickens before they enjoy this more comic version.

4-0 out of 5 stars First time buyer...very pleased!
I just received this video and was very pleased with its condition. For Only $2.00 it was in great investment and I know that my children will love it during the holiday season.

5-0 out of 5 stars An animated christmas classic!
This is a magnifiecent retelling of the classic Dickens tale featuring the stars of Disney in this tale. Scrooge Mcduck stars as Ebenezer Scrooge before he became a mega-star on "Ducktales", Mickey Mouse plays as Bob Crackett, Donald Duck as Fred, Willie The Giant as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Pete as The Ghost of Christmas Future and many Disney all stars.
A well done retelling of the story with a nice moral at the end and it's a sensational short.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYONE: It IS available on DVD...
Hi! Just saw some of these reviews wishing for this title to be available on DVD. Well - it does exist on DVD, on the compilation DVD "Mickey's Magical Christmas - Snowed in at the House of Mouse (1983)" - which is available here at Amazon. Only flaw - and a big one in my opinion - is the intro which has been cut from the VHS version. It starts right into the movie, with the panning down into the city, and the only bit of the wonderful intro song is a short verse at the end. Maybe most people won't mind, but having seen the VHS every christmas for several years, it's a shame really. But the entire movie is there unedited. I hope the whole thing with the intro and all is on the next "Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Living Color Part 2" available next year... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not even a traditional SCI-FI fan
Star Trek bores me, and Star Wars doesn't do much for me either. So that disqualifies me from being a Sci-Fi geek. That being said, I've reviewed a handful of movies on Amazon, but I've never reviewed my favorite of all time. Year after year, this one stands out: The Time Machine, first viewed during my junior year of high school, is my favorite movie of all time.

The movie is very easy to get interested in. It brings up the What If questions about the world you ask yourself and your dearest friends. The dialogue is clever and enjoyable. And Rod Taylor is the perfect gentleman time traveler.

Some people can't handle the 1960 special effects... Appreciate the nostalgia.
Romance. Action. Intruige. Suspense. Emotion. Watch this thrilling movie about much more than TIME TRAVEL, and you'll find yourself loving it, too.

And when you're finished watching the movie, you'll be taking a few minutes to think about starting your own civilization...and what three books you would take to help you build THE FUTURE!

And then you'll stop thinking and look for something else to watch on TV.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Ageless Enthralling Classic of Sci Fi
As gorgeous as the new time machine is, its hard to imagine it can ever top the beauty of the original. Watching the film again today the elegance and detail in the design astonish me. The machine is unforgetable but its the intelligently crafted story and character filled casting in this version that can still fill young hearts with wonder at the possibilities of time travel. Its amazing how the initial half of the film seems as contemporary a tale as when it was first invented. It is only in the land of the far distant future that the film turns into a traditional pulp heroic adventure. But the evil underground dwellers, the morlocks with their blue skin, white hair and glowing eyes remain quite scary and create wonderful tension and excitement. This is a really fun adventure film that warrants its classic status because it can still be apreciated today.

Accompanying the film is a sentimental featurette documenting the finding of the original time machine in a thrift shop and its loving restoration. The film is hosted by the original star Rod Taylor who reprises his role with his co-star Alan Young (Wilbur Post on Mr. Ed) at the end of the feature performing a ten minute skit that imagines a scenario where H.George Wells returns in his time machine to convince his friend to time travel with him to prevent his death in a soon to happen WWI plane crash. The affection for this film for everyone connected with it is palpable as they wistfully delight in telling stories of the experience. Oddly enough one of the big reasons I purchased this DVD at this time was the cover art was so beautiful I had to have it. Click on the Amazon.com icon for this film to see a larger version. It must be one of the best movie posters ever made. Good companion pieces to this film are Fantastic Journey and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let it fool you
I gave it 5 stars just for the movie, but this edition deserves 3, cause you see the audio cd shown on the picture won't be inside the package. I returned it, and got myself the standard version, cause I bought this edition most for the cd. The picture is from an initial pressing of this edition and is no longer available, you'll get all the stuff you see, but no cd. I just thought you'd better know it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Time Machine still a timeless classic
Rod Taylor, Alan Young, and Yvette Mimieux star in George Pal's "The Time Machine", a great sci fi movie based on the novel by H.G. Wells.

Taylor plays George an inventor in the late 18th century (1899 to be exact) who makes a machine that can go back in time.

At first his colleagues are skeptical, but when they see George's small model machine that goes back in time, they start to believe him.

George's best friend, and supporter is David played by Alan Young.

George takes the machine back, because he is sick of the present time, with war being brought on.

He travels to the early and middle 1900's and to his shock , George finds out that Man's future lies in war (which is pretty accurate even up to today's time).

He sees how WWI and WWII started, and even sees when his house is destroyed by an enemy plane!

George then travels far into the future, the year 802701, to see if mankind has any hope of living in peace.

At first, he sees a great paradise with many people (mostly children) play about in solitude. But when one lady named Weena, starts to drown, he sees that no one seems to care. He rescues her, and after talking to the other youths, he learns that they learned nothing from their ancient ancestors.

The books they have are old and buried.

They have lived the good the life, based on the sacrifices from mankind, and they don't appreciate it (which is another accurate telling of today's times).

He learns that Weena is part of the Eloi society which is under the slavery of the Morlocks, a cannibalistic race.

The Morlocks give everything, food and clothing to the Eloi , in exchange for the slavery and their bodies as food.

The movie was directed by sci fi whiz George Pal who won an impressive 7 oscars and awards for his movies.

He is the Steven Spielberg when it comes to sci fi movies.

What's astonishing about the film is the special effects that were made without computer help (which in most movies make the movie look more fake than real).

The way the special effects people made flowers bloom, candles burn while the Time Machine went in time, is very special to see.

It's a great site, from a special effects view, how these people managed to do these effects, with the limited resources they had.

He directed "War of the Worlds" and "Destination Moon" which won numerous awards. DVD comes with a number of great features:

A behind the scenes documentary with Rod Taylor. A great documentary where he shows how George Pal designed the machine. Taylor even shows us storyboards which haven't been seen in 30 yrs.

Even the DVD main menu with Taylor on the cover and the Murlocks in the background, give the DVD a great sci fi look!!

5-0 out of 5 stars From 1899 to 802,701 AD The "Timeless" Classic
There are a lot of reviews about this great picture and how it influenced an entire generation. All of it is true! For some reason this film ties into the imagination and fills you with wonder. We can thank Mr. Wells for creating the story, but we really owe it to George Pal, Wah Chang and Gene Warren for translating the book into a miracle of romantic adventure. The real draw of course is "The Time Machine" prop. Never in the history of film has a prop been more imitated and desired. The special effects received an Academy Award and it was well deserved. All of the elements of Victorian London in winter, cozy parlors surrounded with friends gathered for dinner, "tea table" chat over the 4th dimension and the recollection of an experiment in time travel utilizing a flashback technique are what makes this film so enchanting. When Rod Taylor finally begins a slow initial journey we see the sky in motion in day and night sequences that are breathtaking in astronomic splendor. As the flowered garden and fruit trees go through their seasonal cycles in rapid progression you cannot help but be drawn into the wonder of creation and the genius of invention! The screenwriters then play with your imagination as we see our traveler stop at different events in our 20th century past and a "cold war" interpretation of the decade in which it was filmed when he stops in the "future" on August 18th, 1966 to witness a nuclear holocaust. From here we are quickly transported to the focal point of the Wells story to a future society of Eloi and Morlock culture. The care that went into this DVD should not be understated. It is a highly polished film that restores 20/20 vision to the frames so that we can see all of the colorful beauty that was originally there. Once again, we can SEE the atomic satellite zeroing in, the clear sky above the Eloi "cafeteria" and the smoking machinery of the Morlock caverns. When our traveler returns to 1899 and presents the flower to Filby that was given to him by Weena you will agree that "that flower could not have possibly bloomed in the winter time" and in the holding of that flower you will realize that this is a magic moment in film that will be with you forever and as Mrs. Watchit gradually turns off the lights in our view from the snowy evening outside you will think about the three books you would have taken and agree that having seen this film you will never be the same again, because you are in love with a romantic idea, TIME TRAVEL. ... Though promoted as a "full length holiday movie," this is moreof a TV Christmas special spinoff from Disney's new series, House ofMouse. The premise is something like an animated MuppetShow: Mickey, Goofy, and Donald run a nightclub for an audience ofDisney characters, with plenty of songs, skits, and cartoons. There'snot much story to this holiday special--Mickey whips up an impromptuparty for stranded guests and instills a "Humbug"-quacking Donald withthe holiday spirit--but it's full of sight gags and comic bits withdozens of Disney characters, from Ludwig von Duck to Pumba and Timmon. The special begins with the short Pluto's Christmas Tree andends with the entire 1983 short film Mickey's Christmas Carol. However, the highlight is a comic retelling of The Nutcrackerwith Donald as a reluctant Mouse King (complete with phony Mickey Mouseears) and John Cleese as the exasperated narrator. The special isutterly unmemorable as a whole, but nonetheless bright, light, and cuteand sure to keep the attentions of young tots. --Sean Axmaker ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic Of Disney Shines In This Holiday Season
Whether you have children, or just want to venture into your own past, remembering the magical spirit of Mickey Mouse, this video is perfect. This video has a little something for everyone, and those of you with children, like myself, will see the holiday magic light up on their faces.

MICKEY'S MAGICAL CHRISTMAS is simply about friends getting together during the holiday season. With unexpected visits from a plethora of Disney characters, the storyline has Mickey and friends trying to cheer up Donald Duck. To bring out the smiles, the Disney gang watches old movies together, and the fun is just beginning.

Two of the four movies shown are fairly recent, but "Mickey's Christmas Carol" still brings a warm, fuzzy feeling to my stomach, let alone, huge smiles to the faces of my three daughters. Another classic, "Pluto's Christmas Tree" is also included, and for those of you who can remember this one, Pluto and Chip & Dale are at their best. This humorous cartoon is sure to bring lots of laughter to your family.

John Cleese as the narrator was an excellent addition, and the sound and color is absolutely phenominal. This truly is a wonderful video that culminates with the tremendously heartwarming song "The Best Christmas of All," sung by this outstanding cast of Disney characters. This is the perfect holiday gift for any fan of Disney. It is sure to make you smile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well, I'm expecting a 5 star toon, here's why...
I don't know how many of you out there have seen the new animated Disney TV series House of Mouse, but those of you who have will know what I'm talking about. This is a dream come true to watch. Every Disney cartoon character ever made is seen together at last! The House of Mouse is a hip new night spot where every Disney character from Snow White to Kuzco the llama get together night after night to have dinner, mingle, and watch all new cartoons starring the fab five(Mickey and his crew). The new cartoons are very funny, seeing all the characters together is GREAT, and the idea of a Christmas DVD based on that show sounds like a wonderful Christmas gift to me! I can't wait to get mine! Especially if last year's Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas is any indication of what we can expect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas special for House of Mouse!
This tells about Donald Duck whom is not getting into the Christmas spirit, but it will take Mickey Mouse and the other Disney characters to cheer him up for the holidays.
I'm a big House of Mouse fan and this is quite excellent, this has some shorts such as " The Nutcracker" and the 1983 Disney classic " Mickey's Christmas Carol".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Viewing!!
This DVD is a great buy just to be able to see "Mickey's Christmas Carol". Mickey's Christmas Carol is a classic that all generations will love!

5-0 out of 5 stars I think most of the reviewers wasted thier time
I can't believe that Disney is taking Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, and The Return to Neverland out of stock next year and this is still going to be out on video and dvd (at least for a couple more years). If you know a House of Mouse fan, this may be a good movie for them. But still I have seen some reviewers give this below 3 stars. I just think they have wasted thier time watching this movie. The movie starts with Mickey Mouse (Wayne Allwine) finshing a House of Mouse show on Christmas Eve. But the guests and Mickey's House of Mouse staff can't go home because they are snowed in at the House of Mouse. So Mickey decides to have a party (and going on with the show at the House of Mouse). But then Mickey has another problem Donald Duck (Tony Anselmo) can't get into the Chistmas spirit and keeps saying "Christmas bah, humbug". So Mickey starts showing short cartoons. And some longer ones like "the nutcracker". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Disney Winner for the Whole Family!
What a clever, fun little movie this is! I enjoy it just as much as my 3-year-old son, and we love to watch it together, over and over. My favorite aspects are that it's an interesting story (a classic "mystery") with intelligent characters & clever dialog. There are no gratuitous sidekick characters, no meaningless song & dance numbers.... everything fits together perfectly in this movie. I initially wondered if my son would lose interest in the wordy, British-accented main character Basil, but nothing about the movie was over his head. Even the villians (including a delightfully mean rat, voiced by Vincent Price) didn't overwhelm him. Overall, "The Great Mouse Detective" is thoroughly enjoyable for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've finally bought it on DVD!
That's right all you fans of Disney and of this movie, the long awaited DVD of this movie has finally arrived and ready for you to own it.

This 1986 Cult Disney Classic is about a Detective Mouse named " Basil" with new assistant " Dawson" who must find out what clever scheme that his foe " Ratigan" ( voice of Vincient Price) is up to and must reveal the secret of what he is planning to do with London.

a Brilliant and unique animated feature full of incredible animation and it first uses early CGI for some scenes, this is a movie worth owning for Disney and Animation lovers cause on Repeated viewings it never bores you.

The DVD is fantastic, it's got good features like two Cartoons, Behind the Scenes footage, Scrapbook, and the Picture is absolutely perfect without no single Dirt or Grain to appear and the Sound is phenomenal, this is a must own Disney DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why rated G
This is one of my favorite disney movies,i think that the song 'Goodbye so Soon'could be used in younger classes at the end of the day when its time for the kids to go home, however i don't think that this movie should be rated G,there is a scene in the movie showing mice smokeing and drinking it should of been rated PG.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart, Fun, and just plain excellent!
My first memory of this movie was when my Dad rented it from the video store for us kids. I don't remember my mother watching it with us, but I do know as a child it fascinated me, and my Dad actually got into it, too. My sister and I were looking to expand our DVD collection of good movies without all the garbage that most "adult" movies have. We thought of this one and found it at Wal-Mart. After watching it again, I can say it was just as thrilling! The voice talent, Vincent Price included (since I am a big Batman fan and enjoyed his rendition of egghead), carried well through the movie without sounding the least bit fakey. The take on a mouse detective named Basil of Baker Street living inside the home of the real Sherlock Holmes is one of the smartest movie ideas ever. The plot never slows. The movie progresses at a good clip and keeps you interested. The humor and climax are totally original. Nothing completely predictable and nothing borrowed here. Adults will love this just as much as kids. It's one of those movies that's simply good all the way through.

KITKA

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Disney films of the 1980s.
Full of adventure and mystery, in this film, Disney takes a slightly more sophisticated turn and the outcome is really enjoyable. The film has really nice animation especially the scene atop Big Ben. The voice talent is great, especially the dastardly Vincent Price. The villain is good, and very malicious and powerful. The DVD is really good as well. The movie is in a new letterbox treatment- very nice. I highly reccomend this film for anyone who loves the Disney film genre. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A LOT better than the original
Ok, I'm really getting sick of hearing people flog this movie. The fact of the matter is that it's a lot better than the original in every way. Let's start with the beginning. The original film's first act, yes, the first HALF HOUR is set in a sitting room...with a bunch of people talking. Be careful not to doze off here. Also there is a flashback here, put in for apparently no reason. The scientist, who is never given a name, just wants to see if time travel is possible, that's his only real motivation. Then we are treated to some REALLY godzilla-like special effects and hokey Star Trek: The Original Series sets. When he finds the girl, she has 50s styled hair, speaks perfect english with no explanation whatsoever, and is dumb as a stump. The plot hole here are numerous. Check this out "You mean you have no government?" "No". "You don't work?" "No". If they don't do these things, how the heck do they know what he's talking about? Then the morlocks come bounding out. Remember that old bad monster flick with the guy in the gorilla suit and the deep sea helmet? These aren't far off. Now let's talk about the new movie. Aside from the really annoying "quirk" Guy Pierce comes up with, hanging his mouth open for the entire first act, I liked it. He now has an impotace to change the past, then a motivation to go forth into the future. I loved the broken moon thing, much more interesting than a nuclear attack that sets off a volcano in New York. The Eloi are no longer Star Trek extras, but a real culture. They don't just meander around like zombies but have real tasks to do. When the Morlocks show up, It gets pretty intense. The notion of 3 different kinds was cool. I also liked that Jeremy Irons justifies their behavior. The ending was much better, more fun, and wasn't just some geek professor turning into Rambo and punching out white gorillas.

3-0 out of 5 stars There Was Potential...
At best, Time Machine was a worthwhile Saturday watch. The effects were top rate and very convincing worthy of even George Lucas' ILM stamp of approval (althought the f/x were done by another company). As a previous viewer commented, it was painful to watch Guy Pearce's performance in some scenes. He either displayed "wooden emotions" or he tried a bit too hard. Also, his appearance looked gaunt and very tired in the first 30 to 40 minutes of the film. The ending or fading out of the film had a sort of Titanic feel with overlapping the past and future together in one particular melancholy scene. Despite the advances in special effects over the past 40 years since the original, the 1960 version will always be the best and is definitely a classic. In addition, the 1960 release produced some very grotesque and terrifying images with regards to the underground dwellers (the Morlocks; who can forget their yellow glowing eyes and savage growls)! However, what was admirable in the new version was the introduction of actor Jeremy Irons' intellectually sinister character role ! To hear him say his lines was like hearing his voice all over again from The Lion King playing the evil Scar. Showing that although the human future race was near extinction the existence of a multi-ethnic population was still possible (unlike the original). What I kept yearning for was more adventuresome exploring by the time traveller before he would finally advance to 800,000 years into the future. Also, it would have been fascinating if the writers or director would have gone the H.G. Wells route where supposedly the time traveller goes so far into the future that the entire planet is near total destruction (possibly leaving the traveler lingering in outerspace). This was the room for potential I was talking about!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ren & Stimpy forever
Ren and Stimpy came along when the cartoon industry was in bad shape. What a fresh sigh of relief when this cartoon comedy team appeared on MTV in 1991. Cutting edge. Featuring the voices of creator John Kricfalusi as Ren ,and Billy West (as heard on the Howard Stern show at the time) as Stimpy. This Christmas episode "Son of Stimpy" represents the best of what Ren & Stimpy had to offer. At first it was banned from the airwaves. The series had moved to Nickelodeon, and the story based around Stimpy's flatulence, was a little too risque even for Nickelodeon's target audience. But soon R&S was airing on MTV again with the older generation seeing it on late night, and Son of Stimpy was finally aired. The fact that it was indeed a Xmas episode, was upstaged by the outrageous storyline, the melodrama, the effecting musical soundtrack (probably the most tearjerking version of Silent Night Ive ever heard).
Unfortunately, Ren & Stimpy have not yet made it onto DVD, unless you buy a pirated version of all the episodes transferred to a DVD-r or VCD from eBay. But for now, its worth it to get these hard to find VHS tapes. Especially this "Have Yourself A Stinky Little Christmas" tape. It has all the trademarks of a classic Christmas cartoon that is sure to hold up for years to come. ... Read more

After scoring popular hits with When Worlds Collide and The War of the Worlds, special-effects pioneer George Pal returned to the visionary fiction of H.G. Wells to produce and direct this science-fiction classic from 1960. Wells's imaginative tale of time travel was published in 1895 and the movie is set in approximately the same period with Rod Taylor as a scientist whose magnificent time machine allows him to leap backward and forward in the annals of history. His adventures take him far into the future, where a meek and ineffectual race known as the Eloi have been forced to hide from the brutally monstrous Morlocks. As Taylor tests his daring invention, Oscar-winning special effects show us what the scientist sees: a cavalcade of sights and sounds as he races through time at varying speeds, from lava flows of ancient earth to the rise and fall of a towering future metropolis.

The movie's charm lies in its Victorian setting and the awe and wonder that carries over from Wells's classic story. The pioneering spirit of the movie is still enthralling, but it gets a bit silly when Taylor turns into a stock hero, rescuing a beautiful blonde Eloi (Yvette Mimieux) and battling with the chubby green Morlocks whose light-bulb eyes blink out when they die. Although it's quaint when compared to the special-effects marvels of the digital age, the movie's still highly entertaining and filled with a timeless sense of wonder. --Jeff Shannon ...

Watchit gradually turns off the lights in our view from the snowy evening outside you will think about the three books you would have taken and agree that having seen this film you will never be the same again, because you are in love with a romantic idea, TIME TRAVEL. ... When the 2-inch-tall Tom Thumb arrives at a childless couple's door, it seems like the perfect family has been created. But a chance meeting with a pair of devious robbers soon has Tom acting as an unwitting accomplice in a robbery, thereby threatening his family's happiness. Only Tom (Russ Tamblyn of West Side Story) and his friend Woody (Alan Young) can prove the innocence of Tom's parents and bring the robbers to justice. This 1958 presentation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale won an Oscar® for its innovative special effects. Timeless scenes include the famous dancing shoes and the painted boy who peels himself off of a pad of paper to dance around the room. Peggy Lee and Fred Spielman provide a wealth of catchy songs that have Tamblyn, Young, and Peter Sellers singing, dancing, and performing impressive gymnastic feats. 4-0 out of 5 stars when i was a little kid, this was my favorite movie
and the good parts are just as good today.

start off, of course, with the brilliant sequences from george pal. if i am not mistaken, this was the final puppetoon animation he did, as he was then involved increasingly in directing feature length films. but if only for the yawning man and con-fu-shen, this film would be worth seeing.

add to that, the wonderful live performances by such as the underrated dancer russ tamblyn in the title role; the legendary jessie matthews; and a young peter sellers and terry thomas as marvelous comic villains. sadly, the love story between queenie and woody slows thing down, and even the usually wonderful alan young cant save that part of the movie. (incidentally, a year later young would turn in his finest performance in the george pal "time machine.")

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh Joy!!
Ren & Stimpy have came a very long way since they started the turn from zany cartoon characters, to video vixens in animation. Nevertheless, the manx cat and the dog still have a couple of surprises for everybody. They can always know how to put on their best costumes an make themselves into the most sneaky ways possible. All in the names for some good homes and food. It was shown several times within these cartoons that Ren & Stimpy have appealed to.

There are three cartoons to this crowd. The first, Fire Dogs, showcases the duo dressing themselves up like dalmations, so they can recieve good pay from the fire department, where they have to work hard, especially when the fire comes around, from a big building with goofy characters.

The second cartoon, Monkey See... Monkey Don't, the idea is that the two try to enter a zoo, so they can get some grub, posing as a couple of monkeys. In this cartoon, they meet up with another monkey named Filthy, who tries to make a monkey out of them in tricks, and within their chances at getting some decent food. Nevertheless, monkeying isn't all what it is cracked up to be.

The final cartoon, The Boy Who Cried Rat, is another similar example to Ren & Stimpy getting good service. In the cartoon, Ren poses as a rat, as a similar parody to the old Tom & Jerry cartoons, with a little bit of Mickey Mouse in the way Ren dresses. Unfortunately, there is a unbelieveable twist, where Stimpy is forced to eat Ren up and chew him all the way down. Thankfully, Stimpy coughed him up, otherwise there wouldn't be anymore episodes.

There is also a bonus short called Ren's Pecs. Just a music video short based on Ren finally making it in life, after getting chest implants, through the eyes of his friend Stimpy.

It is just a shame that Ren & Stimpy are no longer being aired on television anymore. It would really be exciting to see the two of them come back to light in full circle. Oh Joy, what an exciting experience that would be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars That Smells Worse
When Ren & Stimpy came out in the early 90's, they brought upon a very clean, but sometimes obscene and weird sense of humor with their animated blitz. Every single cartoon brought up something that would not usually bring into a sense that would seem like it was normal, but it wasn't, and also a sense that it was wished to be normal. Still, you could just tell that within each smell of fear and zany humor that comes about in each cartoon, from the manx cat and the dog called Hoek.

The 1994 video More Stinky Stories, is a collection of 3 cartoons that feature Ren & Stimpy. It was made a sequel based on the previous Ren & Stimpy collection, The Stikiest Stories. Though not all of the cartoons seem like they're fully stinky, yet they are totally zany. The First cartoon, Big Baby Scam, shows Stimpy and Ren trading places with a pair of babies, so they can become a part of a strange family, that the duo once sold rubber nipples to. That was featured on a different cartoon.

The second cartoon, Mad Dog Hoek, is a parody of wrestling that actually goes to the zany, looney bin. Anyway, it also showed something else when Stimpy thinks it is just a pretend game, like most rigges matches. Anyway, once they play against the Lout Brothers, it is anything but pretend, even with the weird wrestling moves that Ren & Stimpy challenge. Rocky this ain't.

The final cartoon, A Yard Too Far, portrays a hungry Ren & Stimpy, trying to get into a burdened yard, when actually, a devilish baboon, who is crazy with protecting his hog chows, that Ren & Stimpy absolutely go crazy for. Still, the duo was able to fool the wild animal, by wooing the baboon with a puppet, which he thinks is a real mate, and the puppet and baboon get married within less than a ten minute courtship.

Still, it is just a shmae that the cat & dog duo are no longer being aired on television anymore. Still, it is just amazing that the impact of Ren & Stimpy still lives on with joy. I just hope that Nickelodeon considers reactivating the looney cartoon. It is just completely zany. ... Read more

The two episodes in this particular video are certainly high calibur 'Ren and Stimpy' work, but the real reason to watch this is the mock commercial 'Colonel Backwash's Chicken in a Drawer'. It pokes fun at things as diverse as inbred swamp inhabitants to everyone's favorite fried chicken mogul, Colonel Sanders. The comedy in this short skit is so irreverant and well thought out it takes a few times watching it to catch all the humor, but amazingly enough you'll never tire of seeing it.

I highly reccomend this film for anyone who loves the Disney film genre. ...

I hope the whole thing with the intro and all is on the next "Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Living Color Part 2" available next year... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a GOOD Movie!
This movie is highly entertaining and very funny. I had laughed at some scenes in this movie. Even kids will enjoy this movie.
"Androcles and the Lion" is about a meek tailor befriending a lion by removing a thorn out of his paw (his mean wife ran away though). Androcles named the lion "Tommy". The tailor, Androcles, gets captured by the Roman army because he's a Christian, and makes friends with a beautiful woman and a burly man named Fevvorus (sp?), among other Christians with them. The beautiful woman, named Lavina, falls in love with a Roman Captain (played by Victor Mature), but she still keeps her faith in God. Later when all the Christians arrived at the Colluseum where the fighting to kill the Christian men, and the lions are for the ladies to die, Fevvorus slays all the fighters and won the affections of Ceaser. Androcles was picked to be killed by the lions...and guess who he met? The lion named Tommy! Ceaser gets impressed once more because Tommy and Androcles danced together in the arena and the lion is tame. :) Ceaser finally lets all the Christians go free, Fevvorus gets to be a guard at the palace, and Tommy and Androcles walk the streets together at the end.
Very good movie and it's highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Androcles The Great
This Hollywood adaptation of Shaw's play came as a very pleasant surprise indeed since as Shaw's plays are always about ideas, I was gratified to see those outlined in the play were faithfully retained in the film. It is also one of Shaw's wittiest tracts on behalf of his abiding belief in animal rights, (the theological debate about whether animals have souls being retained and convincingly presented), as well as his mistrust of any religious dogma that isn't constantly on the side of the here-and-now and the Life Force. Although obvious budget constraints show here and there, all concerned certainly display a grasp of what Shaw was trying to say, and acquit themselves with distinction in all department. Full of Shavian irony and compassion, (the sadness and poignancy in Shaw's work is seldom noted these days), it turns accepted values upside down and helps you on the road to thinking laterally and, hopefully, autonomously. Subversive stuff as always with Shaw! Highly recommended.
