Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good, and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Runnings warms the heart
I remember seeing this movie in the theatre when it first came out. It's the heart-warming true story behind the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team. After jumping through numerous hoops such as racial discrimination, a coach with a shady past, and a rickety bobsled, they land themselves a bobsledding spot in the Winter Olympics, something Jamaica never had before.
John Candy gives a stellar performance, unfortunately it was one of his last. At times he's comical, while others, more dramatic. He's a character easy to fall in love with. I miss him.
Overall, Cool Runnings teaches the fundamentals of determination and never letting anything come between yourself and your dreams. Even when catastrophy ended the Jamaican's third bobsled run, they still got up and carried their sled across the finish line. Even if their time didn't earn a gold medal, their heart did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart- warming and inspiring...
Bobsled to a Caribbean is like a Yeti to the Sahara desert. Both simply dont exist!. And yet, 4 guys with dreams in their eyes, set out to acheive the unmaginable in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. To represent their country Jamaica in Bobsledding!.

"Cool Runnings" is based on this true story, but with a few changes that needless to say, is aimed at making the movie more dramatic. Leon(Derice Bannock)is an athlete aimed at making amends for his failure to secure a berth in the Jamaican Sprint Team. With no way out, he decides to try Bobsled, a sport no Caribbean in his right mind would even know it exists. Irv Blitzer(John Candy), a disgraced former champion Bobsledder decides to train Leon the intricacies of this "bone-shattering" sport. To compete in the event would however require 3 more bobsledders to make up the team. In comes his best friend Sanka(Doug.E.Doug), the tempermental Yul Brenner(Malik Yoba) and the reserved Junior Bevil(Rawle Lewis). What you end up with is a team of hysterical proportions, but with a heart.

"Cool Runnings" is not so much about the event as it is with the main characters. The Jamaicans are determined to compete in an event that is considered solely the domain of a few Icelandic- Nordic nations. The 4 guys are felt out of place, racialized and ridiculed at the event while the coach(Candy) is humiliated and taunted at every turn by the organizers. The crux lays in how they overcome their hardships and ultimately win the crowd, if not a medal. The movie is absolutely hilarious considering the Jamaicans have never seen snow in real life. The initial training on their island is itself worth every penny you paid to watch this movie. However the movie's main strength is in its moral message. "Believe". The movie is based entirely on this one word.

Leon is superb in his role as the leader who never gives up. John Candy is without doubt an actor with a heart of gold. Every movie he has been involved in, he brings in that 'human element' into picture. He is perfect as the flawed but determined coach. The find of the movie however, is Rawle Lewis as Junior Beville. He has the best dialogues and behind that meek physique ,stands a truly compassionate and competitive character. Sanka is the funny bone whose expressions are enough to spill your guts out while Yul Brenner is a tough but protective fellow who eventually warms up to the team and gets transformed at the end of the event. Ultimately it is the will and the confidence they derive from each other at every turn of the event that makes this movie so heart-warming.

The movie has a nice flow to it and the music is catchy. Jon Tutletaub(Director) puts everyting in the right place and the direction is straight forward but slick. Though some parts of the movie are fictionalized, it is forgivable since the main theme isn't lost. Infact it actually enhances it. I must say that movies like this generally tend to have a predictable ending. You'll know you'll have a happy one at that. But watch Cool Running's final few scenes and the phrase 'finish the race' will take a whole new meaning to you. The ending is inspiring..surprising..simply magnificent. Go watch it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hillarious and Inspirational
Everytime I watch Cool Runnings, I still feel the magic and excitement of the first time I watched it. This movie is exceptional. Everything about it works.
The acting is powerful, the story is both exciting and moving, the comedy is fresh and enjoyable, and the soundtrack is perfectly suited to support the mood of the movie.
Cool Runnings is a perfect family film. People of all ages will be drawn to it and enjoy cheering for the Jamaican Bobsled team. There is some mild use of profanity, but it can be overlooked in favor of the moving story, and the morals that children will pick up along with it. Cool Runnings shows the value of pride, tolerance, and persistance.
Throughout the course of the movie we see the team prove to the world through their persistance that they are just as good as any other team, regardless of where they come from. They learn to become a team, learn to take pride in their culture, and do a lot of self discovery.
This movie is one of the few that is sure to touch you and to uplift your spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teenagers dig this movie!
Catchy music, funny crashes, bar fight, a sledder who pees in the sled because he's so scared, calling each other names like Sanka and Yul Brynner....all make for a great laugh in the eyes of a teenager. I've shown this movie to dozens of teens and it never disappoints. The fact is that it's a true story of people chasing their dream, and it has a perfect blend of silly with poignant and great pace to keep adults and young adults alike INTERESTED and entertained the entire time. Also, it follows real life at the end and doesn't have a bunch of no-name Jamaicans taking the gold at the Olympics....teens expect a Disney ending like that and appreciate seeing, instead, the truth. However, ANYONE who watches it finds themselves rooting for these no-name Jamaicans and kind of wishing they would medal even though, realistically, they have no chance. BUY IT and watch it and show it to others...its timeless themes never go out of date.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies I've Seen
"Cool Runnings" is one of the best movies I have seen.
The story line, John Candy and the Jamaican Bobsledders,
the switch from warm Jamaica to cold Calgary all make for a
warm and funny movie. I'm going to take the advice of another
reviewer and watch it now to revive the "feel-good" feeling
of the entire movie. A classic to buy and keep. A true
comedy. ... Read more

This oddball sequel to Smoke is less a sequel than a free-wheeling companion piece. Filmed by Wayne Wang and Paul Austerthe week after they finished Smoke, the idea was to create a wholly improvised film, using the same characters from the first and a few new ones. The challenge was to improvise scenes that would keep the characters talking and interacting for 10 minutes at a crack--the length of a magazine of film. Some of it works well, some less well, but some of it is pure gold (though there is no real story, per se). Among the highlights: Jim Jarmusch as a guy who is about to quit smoking, waxing eloquent about why he loves cigarettes; rocker Lou Reed discussing his various philosophies on life in hilarious deadpan; a few disquisitions on the joys of Brooklyn; and, if you can believe it, a love scene between Harvey Keitel and Roseanne. --Marshall Fine ... 2-0 out of 5 stars What a shame!!!
What a waste. It's terribly filmed and aimless. It also suffers from shoddy editing. Harvey Keitel is great, I don't think I've ever seen him in a bad film. But many charachters, such as the one played by Michael J. Fox, are only seen for a few brief minutes. There is no narrative, this movie is shameful compared to it's predecessor. I understand the directors wanted too do an ode to Brooklyn, but why, oh why, did they have to do it around a sequel to smoke?

4-0 out of 5 stars Blue in the face
All events go on in one of the most famous districts of New York- Brooklyn.
Ozzy's shop with tobacco is the centre of the action. People come there not only to buy cigarettes but also to talk, to meet some friends. A lot of funny, absurd situations take place in Ozzy's shop. We can see some famous faces such as Jim Jarmush who is giving up smoking, Harvey Keitel (Ozzy), Madonna and her provocative dance...
"Brooklyn Boogie" is also a specific description of american city, inhabitants and their attitude towards living there. Lou Reed talks about New York, why he still lives there despite all that danger he meets everywhere.
It's really interesting film. It has nice, relaxing atmosphere, good for sad winter evenings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jarmusch Rules.
I had no idea who this guy was...but his bit on Nazis and movies and cigarettes has caused me to recommend this movie to friends. I saw Smoke first and enjoyed it, but Blue in the Face will leave you rolling on the floor laughing..promise!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Script, No Plot, No Problem!
I got this movie to hear Lou Reed talk about New York. It gets 5 stars for that, but it's much more than a few moments of Lou's brillance. I can't say this movie is better than "Smoke". It has less to it (no plot), but it mangaes to say a little more. Where "Smoke" is like a beautiful song with lyrics, "Blue in the Face" is an instraumental. It's harder to capture, because the viewer isn't forced into pitying or loving any character or the city of Brooklyn. The story doesn't have a plot to guide the viewer toward some monumental epiphany. Instead, the viewer listens harder, and produces fulfillment for themselves. Don't get me wrong, this is a very funny movie. Low budget or filmed in five days, this movie matters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is there no cult following for this film?
And why are there only three customer reviews of this brilliant, on-the-edge film? And what's up with Leonard Maltin (see above)? I think he was expecting a Hollywood Production Movie. I think he would also ask for a Belgian waffle in Belgium (can't get them, I learned from watching this.) There is a McGuffin, I guess, for those who must have a plot. Will the cigar store be sold or not? Who cares? I'd much rather hear Lou Reed explaining the source of his life-long cynicism or why cigarettes are really "health tools." I had seen and enjoyed Smoke, but never knew this film existed. I am so glad I found it by chance. I enjoyed it more than Smoke. I think it would be a great film to run at a party. Regardless of the length and clarity of their attention spans, guests would have to ask "What is this?" And gradually this film would get the cult following it deserves (or maybe it already does and I don't know it out here in the Midwest). Of course, as always, I loved my main man, Harvey Keitel which should go without saying. (I wonder what Mr. Maltin had to say about the uncut version of another Keitel film, The Bad Lieutenant," another movie you won't be seeing on t.v. If "innovative" doesn't scare you, buy this. I am still thinking about the bag-in-the-tree man and Michael J. Fox's survey. I think I need to watch it again. ... Read more

After making a critically acclaimed debut with the low-budget independent drama Heavy, writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone's long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of costars, including GoodFellas alumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can't be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold's script is wildly uneven, but the film still packs a white-knuckled punch. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One Good Cop
When I bought my first DVD player a number of years ago, Cop Land was one of the films that, I thought about buying right off the bat. I was disappointed though, to discover there were no bonus features on the disc, and I didn't get it. Back then, my rule was simple: no bonus material-no purchase. After a long wait, a special edition for the film, is finally here.

Freddy Heflin (Sylvester Stallone) is the sheriff of a place everyone calls "Cop Land"-a small and seemingly peaceful town populated by the big-city police officers he's always admired. Yet something ugly is taking place below the surface. The sheriff is shocked when he uncovers a large and deadly conspiracy among these local residents. He doesn't know who to trust. Gary Figgis (Ray Liotta) and Ray Donlan (Harvey Keitel) try to persuade Heflin that he is wrong. Soon though, he is forced to take action and make the difficult choice between protecting his own and enforcing the law, as Lt. Tilden (Robert De Niro), an Internal Affairs officer, arrives to begin an investigation of his own.

Writer/director James Mangold assembled a top notch cast that can't be beat. Stallone rises to the challenge and gives his best performance since the original Rocky flick--no really, it's that good. The drama and situations are very real. No over the top, super hero heroics are to be had. It's gritty reality is heightened for me even more, due to Mangold's use of many familiar North Jersey locales, as the story's backdrop.

The DVD showcases a 116-minute "Director's Cut" of film. In this cut, 11 minutes of footage is reinserted, not part of the original theatrical version. For the most part, these scenes are rich in character bits and advance the plot only slightly. Still, the 11 minutes are worthwhile. The audio commentary track from Mangold, producer Cathy Konrad, cast members Stallone and Robert Patrick is a solid one, filled with great insight on how the film came together. Aside from the 11 minutes of inserted scenes, there are a few additional deleted scenes complete with opitional commentary from Mangold, about the editing choices he made. The film's climatic shootout and its corresponding storyboards are detailed for viewers. Pretty cool. Rounding out the bonus material is a featurette called "The Making of an Urban Western" All I'll say is the commentary is better.

The special edition of Cop Land is recommended. And it's worth a re-purchase if you already own the movie only disc. ****1/2 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable movie with an even more memorable cast !
The movie Cop Land combines long lost talent in its leading star, Sylvester Stallone; top notch performances from its supporting cast, Ray Liotta, Robert Deniro, Harvey Keitel, and Annabella Sciorra; wonderful cinematography by Eric Edwards; and brilliant direction of James Mangold who later went on to direct such hits as Kate And Leopold, Identity, and Girl Interrupted.

Cop Land is a fictional tale of crime and corruption in a city run and occupied by New York's unfinest cops. Stallone pulls it off excellently as the city's overweight sherrif, Freddie Heflin, who couldn't get into to the force on account of his deaf ear. When the police force covers up a cop shooting that leaves two innocent men dead and stages a hero story, its up to Sherrif Heflin to reveal the truth and bring order to the city known to everybody as Cop Land.

The movie features an outstanding performance by Robert Deniro as an FBI agent trying to uncover the deceptions and opens Heflin's eyes to the corruption around him.

A memorable film with an even more memorable ensemble cast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Underrated
Great little movie. Amazing cast, great performances. Nicely underplayed. Will be curiuos to see the directors cut with 11 extra minutes added.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid cop thriller in the tradition of Sidney Lumet
Cop Land is a homage to police corruption films like Sidney Lumet's Serpico and Prince of the City. In many respects, Cop Land is also a modern western, complete with a High Noon-style showdown. Miramax previously released this film on a movie-only DVD. This new version is a huge improvement but is it worth the upgrade?

Definitely.

"Cop Land: The Making of an Urban Western" is an excellent retrospective featurette. Stallone to be interested in the role but the actor wanted to something different, to go back to his starving actor roots. After him, came De Niro and then everyone else followed.

Next, there is a "Storyboard Comparison" that allows one to watch part of the film's climatic shoot-out simultaneously with the storyboards for it.

There are two deleted scenes with optional commentary.

Rounding out the extras is a solid audio commentary with director James Mangold, producer Cathy Konrad and actors Sylvester Stallone and Robert Patrick. Not surprisingly, Mangold and Stallone dominate this track. Stallone comes across as a very humble and gracious guy. Mangold keeps everyone talking, acting as an informal moderator and asking everyone questions. This is a really good track and definitely worth a listen if you're a fan of this movie.

Cop Land features a killer cast and allows them to flex their acting chops with a top-notch screenplay. This DVD is a definite improvement over the previous bare bones edition and is worth the upgrade. Miramax has finally done this film justice with an excellent special edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was alright but nothin' special
I thought the movie would be really fun to watch I mean CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER & BERNIE MAC and on top of that FREDRO STARR & MALIK YOBA.
All the people I mention did great work, but the movie it self weren't that well-written and couldv'e been much better however it was a pretty funny movie.
I bought the European Version and missed out on the 4 musicvideos that are as a bonus in the american edition and that pissed me off a little.

The soundtrack is better than the movie, but the movie is still o.k. if u don't pay too much for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC
Though the movie was very predictable, the music was great! Some of the storyline was so stupid it actually made it funny. Again clearly the star was the music of DUNN PEARSON!!

2-0 out of 5 stars The most ridiculously stupid movie
A movie with a so called "righteous black man" and some students he takes to Florida the possibility of making in entertainment only in the end to buy into the sterotype of black entertainers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Actually better then i thought
I must say when i saw this film when it was first release in theatres i didnt know what expect.. I thought just some second rate low budget comedy.. with the laughs comin at crude humour..but to my surprise the laughs were ginuwine.. they were forced like you get in some movies.. a good cast of hip hoppers, unknowns, veterans.. a Slamming Soundtrack ! made this movie very entertaining

1-0 out of 5 stars very forgettable

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick Review
Malik Yoba plays Keith, a struggling journalist that comes up with a story idea. He uses the personal ads to get 30 dates in 30 days. He discovers all sorts of women until he discovers a girl (Stacey Dash) that sees right through him. What turns out to be a story idea becomes a quest to understand woman and their issues of dating.
If you have seen How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or Never Been Kissed, this movie si sort of a hybrid of those movies. You pretty much see every type of woman out there and then some. A nice movie without the excessive sexual content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Indy Film!
I had the pleasure of seeing this film in the summer of 2000 in Chicago as part of the "Go See Black Films" Film Fest and was thoroughly entertained. This is a fun movie about dating in the millennium. Everyone that I've let borrow my DVD version of Peronals has enjoyed it and purchased a copy for themselves. As a fan of Indy films, especially Black Indy Films, I cannot recommend Personals enough. It's funny, has a great looking cast, fun characters, and a message that everyone can relate to. This is a great date movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars bbbbllllaaaahhhhhzzzzzeeeeyyyy
This was so tired as a film and a story. Nothing new and very very limited talent on both sides of the camera. No wonder this had no theatrical release. Malik Yoba once again proves to be a black version of Kevin Costner though with out the Costner pay checks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Sexy
I had the pleasure of catching this film during a film festival in DC and I then ordered a copy from Amazon. It was hilarious at times, heartwarming at times, and just downright entertaining. The main character is a reporter who decides to date several women that he meets through personal ads for a story. He assumes that he will learn something pertinent about women but ends up finding out even more about himself, his behavior, and his emotional needs. I would suggest this movie to anyone who wants to discuss the male-female thing with their mate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anyone Can Relate
This is a film, I feel, that anyone who has ever dated in the 80's, 90's, or 00's can relate to. Anyone who has gone to the edges of the earth and tried every tactic availabe to find true love can relate to this. Especially someone who had dated someone from the personal ads or online. I really enjoy the message of 'sometimes true love can be staring you in the face.' I recommend this film to anyone single and especially to those who are dating. You might just see yourself in one or many of the characters. Excellently written, directed, and edited this film is easy to follow and really keeps your attention and your emotions at their peak! Malik Yoba and Stacey Dash both give excellent performances and the surprise ending will leave you with chills and possibly a tear of happiness. This film is a must for anyone's DVD or Video Library. A work of art that you can't help but watch over and over and over again. 'Personals' is definitely worth every dollar and then some. ... Read more

APART FROM THE GREAT SLY WE HAVE THE GREAT HARVEY KEITEL, RAY LIOTTA AND OF COURSE ONE OF MY TOP 5 FAV ACTORS ALONE WITH SLY WHO IS NUMBER 3 ROBERT DI NERO. THIS IS A GREAT FILM FOR COP LOVERS I THINK ITS ONE OF THE BEST AND REALISTIC FILMS ABOUT BEING A SO CALLED "COP" AND BEING A "SHERIFF". I WOULD RATHER BE A SHERIFF AND WEATHER MOE TILDEN LIKES IT OR NOT FREDDY HEFLIN IS A COP. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This play is sooooooo good. Not only does it have a good message, it also has some good actors/actresses and some good scenarios. The singing is ausume too. This is a good tape to have, to invite church friends or family to watch together. It offers a clear cut message. My favorite part is when the mom sings to the daughter after she confesses that she has lost confidence in her self. I was so affected by the mom's vocal skills and the words, she sung self esteem right back into my life. Go get it!!!!!!!! One Love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!!!
If you have been living with someone and you feel that it's not a great idea, well, get this video!! You have this young couple(Malik Yoba is the young man in the video) and he lives with this young lady who helped him become the lawyer he is. Add to that pot a "baby mama" who is so jealous of his relationship that she latches on to his colleague at work to destroy his reputation for their own gains. Include a father who is looking for his second young adulthood, a mother who constantly harangues her daughter with engagement ring ads, and threatning bodily harm to the man so much that he has to run and hide and you got a comedy that although funny, has also a great lesson behind it. I urge you to get this video today!! You won't miss it. Check out the scene where the mother talks and comforts her daughter. Unforgettable...

David E. Talbert does it again! David has managed to write yet another entertaining stage play..."His Woman, His Wife." If you missed seeing this production live on stage, you must buy the video! You're in for a treat...outstanding singing talent, many laughs and some tears. The entire cast was talented. If you've had the opportunity to see some of David's other productions, "He Say, She Say", "What Goes Around Comes Around", or "Mr. Right Now", then you will love "His Woman, His Wife." Check it out for yourself. You will not be disappointed! ... Read more

'Personals' is definitely worth every dollar and then some. ... Read more
