Superior to both Kids and Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is a snarling satire that has the emotional range to prompt rage, fear, laughter, and grief in a viewer. Three L.A.-based, almost-twentysomethings--an incredibly foul-mouthed Valley Girl (Rose McGowan), her puppyish boyfriend (James Duval), and a sexy bad boy (Johnathon Schaech)--take to the road after a series of comic collisions with skinheads and gun-toting convenience-store clerks. While secret lawmen and voyeuristic TV cameras follow their movements, the fugitives gradually warm up to a three-way sexual relationship that wraps them in a profound, renewing innocence--an innocence then stolen by a wrathful America. Araki skewers the usual villains: the media, homophobes, gun nuts, Gen-X stereotypes. But there is so much more at stake here than meets the eye, an extraordinary anger and fear about predatory intolerance and purposelessness about the young. The DVD release includes the original theatrical trailer and production notes. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Red"," White" and "Blue" on the Run
Everybody made a big deal about Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers", calling it brilliant. But I thought it was ... One of the worst movies ever, too over the top and condecending. "The Doom Generation" gets it right with a mixture of satire, music, and a punk attitude.
The movie stars Rose McGowan as Amy Blue. Both she and her boyfriend Jordan (James Duval) are sitting in their car sharing a moment when Xavier (Jonathon Schaech)leaps into their car and thay have to get out of there to avoid the goons chasing Xavier.
After that, they embark on a road trip around L.A. They get involved in a bloody holdup, killings, and are being chased by homophobic maniacs, the FBI,and people who constantly mistake Amy Blue for someone else. The movie has a tongue in cheek quality that I felt accurately mirrored the teen angst rebels on-the-run scenario. Rose McGowan makes the movie with her witty one-liners and her attitude driven performance. It's wild and outrageous and has an ending that definitely caught me off guard. I also think the soundtrack, which I bought,is pretty good. With gore, nudity, ...undertones, and enough metaphors ... , this one's not for the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rose and Gregg tear up the screen!!
What drew me to this film was the sexy chic on the cover.. Rose Mcgowan made this role her own.. Gregg Araki directed the film and her very well.. The film is about two lovers played by Mcgowan and James Duvall. They pick up a stranger who is being beaten up by a gang of kids.. after picking him up (by accident).. they try to drop him off at a convenience store.. trouble ensues and the twosome becomes a threesome.. they begin to travel across the state to avoid the police.. on their journey they meet up with some very strange characters who all think they are lovers of Mcgowans, and try to take her back by any means neccesary.. each time, something bad happens.. and each time they run.. finally, trouble catches up with them..

This movie is a prime example of how movies should be made.. its an indie classic in the making.. a cult hit if you may.. it never lets go once it grabs ahold.. watch and enjoy.. you won't be dissapointed..

1-0 out of 5 stars This film stinks.
"The Doom Generation" is a piece of garbage. It tries to be so many things and fails on all levels. It's not art and it's not good entertainment.
It tries to be as violent and funny as "Pulp Fiction" and "Natural Born Killers" are and it fails! "The Doom Generation" tries to shock the audience with violence and even there it fails! I guess one could call it a boring and cheesy comedy. The only thing to laugh about it's how predictable and boring it is. Still, I give it 1 star for the scene where the "heroes" of "The Doom Generation" show a bit of compassion for a dog.
Otherwise, it's as boring as a rat's ass!

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-The-Top is the absolute understatement
I rented this movie basically because of the fact that it touted itself as a "road flick," a genre that I'm usually a fan of. I'll admit the gratuitous violence in the beginning had me laughing just because of how corny it was presented, but this wore itself out several minutes later. The film tries to loosely have some kind of "hell" theme by continuously referring to $6.66 as payment for different items they buy along the way. We get it. You didn't have to do it 7 times. I wasn't sure exactly what theme the writer was trying to convey, but it doesn't matter because the story it was based on was so bad anyway. The filmmakers try to use shocking visuals and group sex to (I guess) grab the attention of the audience, which is good because it diverts that attention away from the terrible story that's going on. Don't waste your time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Over Cooked?
Normally, I don't care much for movies that try to hard to be shocking but this one does leave an impression. The entire film is jam-packed with subliminal messages and 'eye-candy' visuals. There is a story here, with no satisfying conlusion, that is entertaining as he77 to watch. The ending to this film is "overly-shocking" by which I mean not shocking because it tries so hard to be shocking, but it will suprise you. I give it 3 stars because it is not the best movie ever but it leaves a lasting impressioin. I guarantee it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Has flaws, but I love it anyway
I'm giving this film 5 stars despite some small things some folks would consider flaws in the film. I am still giving it 5 stars because it happens to be a film I keep watching over and over again, and I never get tired of a single scene in the whole flick.
Jean-Hughes Anglade and Eric Stoltz are perfect together as old childhood friends out to rob a Federal bank in France on Bastille Day.
Here are the reasons why I love this movie. It really has a lot packed into it. It has a ton of humor, though much of it is dark humor. The extended drug use scene and tour of Paris must be about as close as you can come to honestly portraying being high on film. The pace of the action never slows down, and each scene consistently draws me in. There are a whole bunch of little original ideas and surprises thrown in that makes the film always interesting.
Memorable moments: the dead cat in the hallway, "riding the dragon", the monkey and Billie Holiday, viking films, Ron Jeremy, the ex-con joke, Eric pondering the next move.....
If you like anything by Tarantino, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. Honestly, I come back to watch this far more often than I do anything by QT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Reservoir Dogs
Roger Avary is the true talent behind Quentin Tarantino (at least according to NBK producer Jane Hamsher) and his first solo job is impressive, if a bit slow. The main heist doesn't really get going until the halfway point. But it's really a character study, anyway.

Zed (Eric Stoltz) is called by Parisian buddy Eric (Jean-Hugues Anglade) to help him break into a reserve bank vault on Bastille Day, one of the few banks open on that day.

Zed falls for a student/escort supplied to him through a cab driver, takes several recreational drugs with Eric and his friends (including Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp), and wakes up the next morning, not quite ready for the job. The job keeps Zed downstairs surrounded by the noise of the drill, so he never notices that things go very wrong.

And who happens to have a part-time job at the bank?

Avary is quoted as saying that producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction) called him up and said he had a bank set free for a few weeks, did he have a script involving a bank he wanted to film? Avary said yes, he did. Then he wrote one...this.

Comparisons to Reservoir Dogs are inescapable (even on the video box), but the two films are very different, although similarly dark in tone. I think this one is actually better.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I was Zoe!
I wish I was Zoe so that someone would have killed me before I started watching this drivel.
This film was reccomended to me and all I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.
Quentin Tarantino and Lawrence Bender produced this. I must admit, I find that very hard to believe. Not because of the slow pace, crappy story and characters (Although that is surprisng for those two) but it's the incredible lack of money that surprised me most of all. Don't get me wrong on this, I don't care if a film is made on pennies. BUT IT HAS TO BE GOOD.
Robert Rodrigiez made El Mariachi on seven thousand dollars. This looks like it was made on seven cents.
I personally think that this film was no more than one of Tarantino's old Video archives buddies asking for a bit of money to make a film. Tarantino being the nice guy that he supposedly is, not to mention a film addict, was curious to see what his friend would produce. Now it went one of two ways.
Either Tarantino and Bender gave him the money and left him to do the whole thing on his own without any tip offs, or the guy just kept all the money, went to the local supermarket to pick up a crappy video camera (cos that's what it looks like) and shot the film without a care in the world eagerly awaiting the rap party.
Anyway I f you find all this hard to believe (Just like I did) then get hold of this and find out yourself. But make sure you do yourself a favour and when you start to get incredibly bored, turn the film off. Take my advice, It doesn't get any better.

I would be surprised if Lawrence Bender and Quentin Tarantino didn't agree with me!

5-0 out of 5 stars craziness
You guys are nuts. Killing Zoe may not be the bank robbery film that Heat is, but it has many more aspects to it, namely gratuitous sex, drugs, and violence. Yes, the bathroom scene is a little much, and the movie is unrealistic. But if you're going to movies to experience realism, what's the point? Just walk outside. Killing Zoe is a perfect distraction for any of you out there who, like me, are to entrenched in reality to fly to Europe and take heroin for the first time the night before a bank robbery you didn't plan for at all. I'm personally insulted by the stupidity that would be necessary to call this movie predictable, simply because I didn't anticipate it was possible for such a level of it to exist and I hate it when I realize that dumb people still have the capability of suprising me. This movie is a classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Killing The Audience
Predictable from the first 5 minutes into the movie. Overdone plot about a robbery gone wrong and the safe-cracker hero who has a heart. Nothing original here except for scenes so vulgar and tasteless that it would make Howard Stern turn in disgust.

The script is nil and the acting less than stellar. The conincidences purposefully placed in the film to support the plot are too great to be credible and the action too dull to keep it interesting. I frankly could have done without the grotesque heroin-induced sodomy scenes. Watch "Heat" instead if you want to see a great bank heist film. Don't waste your time or money on this one, it's a sleeper at best: A negative rating is called for. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good as vampire movies go
Let's face it, if you're a fan of the genre, you know that most vampire movies suck (no pun intended). This one doesn't. It's actually pretty good, especially if you like a view that's sympathetic to the vampires. The vampires in this movie are a subspecies of humans, with their own society and laws. Sounds sort of like Kindred, The Embraced, doesn't it? It even has the stylish old-world vampires at odds with the younger, rebel vampires. It also has the beautiful blonde human reporter who's in love with one of the vampires. The movie has some good twists, attractive women, cool settings...and it's entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Movie!
This is one of the few vampire movies I could watch again and again. It's not very gory but it's very entertaining nonetheless. It stars Jason London, and he plays his role as that of vampire-who-doesn'-t know-he's-a-vampire very well. Blood Ties has its very funny moments as well (I'm not sure they were supposed to be that funny...). Get this movie today. Happy watching!

3-0 out of 5 stars Views more like a murder drama than a vampire movie...
Frankly, I'm surprised it even got an R rating. The story isn't half bad, except they break the cardinal rule that vampires can't exist in the daylight. In most ways they don't even seem like vampires--just a strange branch of humanity who can feed on blood when riled enough. Anyway, don't expect any nudity. What scenes there are could probably be boadcast without censorship, in my opinion. The violence must be what makes it restricted, but again compared to most vampire movies of today, the violence is very tame.

If you're looking for a borderline R vampire flick to watch with teen members of the family, this is it. Enjoy the tale. But, hardcore horror fans will think this extremely disappointing....

5-0 out of 5 stars "Only Revenge Is Sweeter Than Blood"
"Blood Ties" begins in Anchor, Texas, where three S.C.A.V. (Southern Coalition Against Vampirism) members murder a teen's parents and shoot the young man (Cody Puckett, played by Jason London) with a crossbow before setting the house on fire. Luckily he escapes--or rather, the Amish-looking trio allow him to get away so they can follow him to "the others".

Wounded, 17-year-old Cody seeks the rich, corrupted Uncle Eli Chelarin (Patrick Bauchau) in Long Beach, California. Here Cody meets a few other relatives: Butcherbird "Butch" Vlad (Salvator Xuereb), Eli's rebellious nephew and the apparent leader of the Shrikes (the young troublemakers of the family, which Cody becomes a part of); Harry Martin, aka Harlevon Martinesque (uncertain spelling; played by Harley Venton), another one of Eli's nephews, as well as a reporter for the 'Long Beach Post-Gazette' and Cody's "guardian"; and Celia (Michelle Johnson), Eli's younger halfsister and lover. She's also Harry's occasional lover, which, by the way, if you hadn't noticed, makes her his half-aunt. Grossed out? Then you may not want to watch this one, because there's more incest involving cousins. Nothing graphic though.

In the movie, Harry is one of the leading characters who is trying to track down these "vampire" hunters before they can hurt anyone else. His semi-assistant is D.A. Amy Lauren (Kim Johnston Ulrich), who had tried to put Butch in jail at the beginning of "Blood Ties", but failed because of Eli's monetary charm. Amy's more of a blond-haired-blue-eyed sexual distraction for Harry, though, than any real help.

Although "Blood Ties" is essentially a vampire/horror movie, it doesn't rely on fangs or other vampire myths at all. It's more of a tongue-in-cheek soap opera drama with a hint of vampirism that's more racially charged than scary. This is noticeable in how the word "vampire" is considered a derogatory term, even though that's what they are; "Carpathian" is the appropriate term. Another example of racial undertones in this movie is when the redheaded Western Regional S.C.A.V. member (Grace Zabriskie) spouts off how terrible it is to have to sit with "one of them" on the bus or be with one in the same room. She continues by saying the "vampires" sole purpose is to steal other people's spouses, jobs, parking spaces, etc. Concerning "vampires" it sounds absurd, I know, but realize there's more to this movie than just cursory blood and guts, although the violence is quite tame and nonexistent compared to today's standards. There is some bloodletting, but no graphic vein-ripping, limb-tearing scenes here.

Sure, it's pretty cheesy at times too, i.e., the choreographed dancing of the Shrikes, but "Blood Ties" wasn't meant to be a serious film. It had aired back in May of 1991 on Fox as a pilot, but apparently it didn't take as a series. I remember watching it back then and pretty much fell in love with it at first viewing since it combines my two favorite genres (horror and comedy) and spotlights "vampires" (my favorite type of monster). I simply can't wait for the DVD version to come out this June!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another fresh twist on the vampire theme
Excuse me -- not "vampire"! That's an ugly word, a slur. These folks preferred to be called "Carpathian -Americans," thankyouverymuch.

And most of what you've heard about ... Carpathians ... is untrue. Wild, exaggerated, ugly tales. (Except the thing about liking the taste of blood. That's true. But that was long ago. They're civilized now. Didn't _your_ ethnic ancestors do some pretty gross things hundreds of years ago?)

"Blood Ties" looks at an extended clan of, uh, Carpathian-Americans as just another group of immigrants, living in Long Beach, CA. There's the first generation -- conservative, with strong ties to the old country and the old ways. The second generation -- assimilationist, more "American" in their thinking. And the young third generation -- rediscovering their heritage, militantly proud of it, and a little bit spoiled.

These immigrants, however, are also victims of prejudice and hate ... which turns deadly ... There are "vampire hunters" abroad, and they are the bad guys.

Suspenseful, sexy, sometimes humorous and maybe even thought-provoking. I don' t think this was exactly a big-budget movie, but it was very entertaining. I wish it could have become a TV series. And I loved the "Carpathian" music -- especially the tune that plays at the beginning and ending. I wish I could get a recording of it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars John Stamos Rides Again
This is one of my favorite action movies. I originally watched it because of John Stamos, but now that I don't really care one way or another about him, I still appreciate the movie a little for what it is; a motorcycle/war/action flick. Stamos does a bang-up job, there is an exploding motorcycle for those who resonate to that, and of course, a little love story on the side. So, if you like Stamos, or if you like to see motorcycles burst into flames, watch this movie.

Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance. Rose McGowan (Scream), James Duval (Nowhere), and Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!) star as a trio of friends (Schaech's character actually being a complete stranger who steps into their car and into their lives one club-hopping night) who end up on a sex-and-crime spree that draws the fixed stare of television coverage. Araki makes a case for their continuing innocence in a society whose anti-outsider malevolence is barely disguised in the media but is quite naked out in the heartland, where a punishing level of bigotry is not unknown. Araki's jokes and techniques are crude yet forceful, and his anger is absolutely clear where Stone's was obscured and overreaching. The climax is among the most shattering and enraged scenes of '90s cinema. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars intelligent well made movie
I enjoyed this movie altho I found one of the principal actors a bit to affected to be believable.JAMES BROLIN does a fine job as a first time director as well as taking the lead role .PATRICK FOY does well as the reluctant hero and GARY COOK as the IRA head is well cast. The only problem I had was that it was a bit cliched but then it is getting more and more difficult to come up with and original idea no matter what the story.Watch out for the BILL MURPHY cameo. He plays paddy kelly an IRA activist with the fire of freedom burning in his belly.Stunning scene.

This movie had a good plot. The performances by Salvator Xuereb and Patrick Foy were absolutely superb as feuding IRA brothers. I could have done without James Brolin. He and his character were out of place and his acting, as usual, leaves you unmoved. It's a movie worth watching on a rainy day. It is especially worth watching for the poem at the end - very moving.

The only reason we bothered renting this movie is becuase our friend has been making fun of it in the past two weeks (by the way, he found in the Blockbuster dumpster). It exceeded our expectations and is probably the most unintentionally hilarious movie we have ever seen. How can you not laugh every time James Brolin enters the screen? Plus, why did Josh Brolin get a billing when he was only in the movie for 2 1/2 minutes?

I guarantee it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rose gives the performance we've been waiting for.
Although "The Doom Generation" was a wonderful start for Miss McGowan, this movie shows that she doesn't need to talk to what she wants. And Dan Gunther was pretty cool too.

5-0 out of 5 stars ROSE McGOWAN DELIVERS!!!!!
This is an awesome flick! Rose McGowan was by far the best part about this film! She was so good... I mainly saw this because of Rose, but it is a pretty good movie. Gunther was good too. If you like Rose, see this film! It was awesome!

3-0 out of 5 stars "You gotta swear you won't kill nobody with these guns."
Lots of indiscriminant murder and Rose McGowan behind the wheel of a pink 58' Olds with a cigar perched between her trademark red lips...what more could you ask for? You know, I love that girl but somebody finally figured out the real key to her intoxicatingly wicked charm is to keep her silent throughout the entire film. Just the hottest little demon from Hell homewrecker since Joan Crawford!(Spoiler alert) She has one line in the movie and it's worth waiting for, or maybe you'll just want to fast forward to the last scene to hear it for yourself. Her facial expressions and hand gestures are a lot more effective than the dialogue here anyway which is just downright stupid. I wish there was another word that better describes the pure dumbassity of this movie but there just ain't one.

Salvator Xuereb was pretty cool as your "here we go again" dissasociated psychopath that broke out of prison with some computer nerd to go on a treasure hunt for gold. They even managed to weave in a tatooed dog, a hit man and a poisonous snake...OOOOOOHHHHHHH! Has it's moments, particularly when the tourists from NY stop to photograph one of our treasure hunters. That one had me rolling on the floor. If you like road movies you can probably somehow find the patience to sit through this one too. Made me hungry for "Love and a 45." 3 Fangs

5-0 out of 5 stars She's bad, but she's NOT bad
Did you like The Doom Generation? So did I, actually, I like it a bit more than a healthy person probably should. Rose was in that movie constantly, and she was, to put it kindly, quite vocal. I enjoyed this. So I couldn't imagine wanting to watch a movie in which she plays a "mute" - why watch a movie without that incredible voice? You know what's even better about Rose McGowan than her voice (hey, get your mind out of the gutter)? Her eyes. Guess how someone who is mute expresses themselves... with their eyes! Wow! The way she uses those eyes to reduce people to insect-status is incredible (guy... "Can you hear?" Rose's eyes... "You are an idiot" you... "whoa, those are great eyes"). So what can I say? Love Rose McGowan's eyes, love this movie. Don't love Rose McGowan's eyes, well, I can't comprehend such a thing, so I can't comment in that case.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly inept writing, acting and direction.
An annoying trio of characters, an I'm-so-hip tone, atrocious writing and shooting, and a relentlessly smutty tone...this one, for me, didn't even quality as "bad is good". Not even worth the rental price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant piece of art depending on your expectations.
To me, Roger Avary's Mr. Stitch is one of the most underrated movies ever. Yes, it's sparse special fx and some sets may look cheap, but hell, this isn't what Mr. Stitch is all about, in the same way as Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek: The Next Generation" isn't about science fiction.

If you're looking for great fx or hollywood style entertainment, then you'd be ill-advised with Mr. Stitch, this is not the kind of movie to watch with friends at a video party. It's the fusion of utterly brilliant, thought provoking dialogues with truly magnificent music (by tomandandy) where this piece of art excels. Mr. Stitch has a timeless quality to it and if watched alone and without any distraction (recommended) it creates a unique, almost hypnotic mood. I especially like the beautiful night sky scene.

As so often, it's all a matter of taste, but by no means should Mr. Stitch be called a failure as it definately succeeds in transporting it's message to those inclined to listen carefully enough.

If you prefer "Last Light" to "Dead Man Walking", "Dark City" to "Matrix", "Supernova" to "Star Wars", "Sweet November" to "Sleepless in Seattle" or "Blade Runner" to "Minority Report", then, I guess, you're compatible with Mr. Stitch and there's a very good chance that you'll love it.

Personally, I'd pay nearly any price if this little gem came out on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
this movie is awesome.....if you dont wanna rent it then def keep your eyes open for it to be on scifi again

3-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant failure
I must say I was totally glued to the screen during the first 40 minutes of the movie. While a number of old ingredients were present in the story, some twists of modern science were carefully applied. The vast potential of the mix was immensely evident, and unfolding suspense carefully adminstered to the viewer.

Many movies seem to be released in pairs (such as Volcano & Dante's Peak, Deep Impact & Armageddon...), and such was the case with this one too: it explores some elements akin to the film Powder.

Unfortunately, as the movie went on, the story solved itself towards the ending in a very predictable, traditional way. Which is sad, since this film had all the possibilities to be something truly unique. While a lot of the film was artistically extremely high-brow, a few ugly bits here and there damaged the effect.

The soundtrack was similar to the movie itself: something very interesting and potential was on the works by "Tomandandy", but a number of searing flaws ruined the whole.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bizzare and weird in a tradtion to "Brazil!"
A modern day Frankenstein story. Rutger Hauer is one of the many scientist who have created a human from 88 different people who donated there bodies to science. One problem. in his sleep he is haunted by the souls jumbled in his resseurected body. Starring Rutger Hauer, Wil Weaton, Nia Peeples, and Ron Pearlman. Made by in assosiation with the SciFi Channel.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious, boring, art-wannabe timewaster
So the director shared an Oscar with Tarantino and apparently some producer gave hime a big fat check to make this pretentious "thoughtful" SF disaster. Don't waste your time cuz nothing works in boring "art" piece. Actually it looks like it would properly work as a stage play..well, maybe not. "Killing Zoe" was an okay flick but this turd is as bad as "Closetland". Mr. Hauer has wasted his talent with yet another bomb but what's new. ...

2-0 out of 5 stars My Brother's War

I wish I could get a recording of it. ... Read more

I guarantee it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie
I liked the plot of this movie. John Stamos actually knows how to ride. The race sceen is pretty cool.
