The soul of a dead serial killer is captured inside a computer network from a surge of lighting; he begins to ply a killing spree through the electrical grid and appliances on a Cleveland single mother's friends, using pages from her lost address book. Computer graphics and some unrelenting gore (for those who like that stuff) can't compensate for a ludicrous and predictable story, but even those "redeeming marks" aren't anything to brag about. Running Time: 93 minutes and rated R for violence and gore.

It's not of Academy Award caliber; there were two scenes I would expect to see in a "B" movie. The rest, in my opinion, more than makes up for these two scenes. Given what happened in New York on September 11th and America's response, this movie has a message about violence and non-violence. Don't look for it to be a simplistic message.

Amazon.com Admitted, this movie is more suited to fans of the comic than to outsiders, but that said, it is the Marvel adaptation most likely to entice people into investigating its source material. Hooten delivers an appealing performance as the compassionate Strange; his acting is what drives this piece. John Mills is decent as Lindmer, and Anne-Marie Martin emphatically plays the victimized Lake, but Jessica Walter is a bit too cold and distant as sinister sorceress LeFay, despite her cool, icy stare. Luckily, Paul Chihara's moody electronic score (reminiscent of Goblin's music in Dario Argento films) adds tension to the movie. You can tell the filmmakers were setting up a series that never came, and it's too bad because there was a lot of potential here. --Bryan Reesman Reviews (6)
In every age and time, some of us are called to join the battle. This is the story of Dr. Stephan Strange, a man in middle years who suddenly discovers the great mystery of his own life, and of all life. He comes face-to-face with the Ancient One, Master of the Hermetic Arts- Sorcerer Supreme. He is told that he has been chosen to be the next bearer of this mantle, the next champion of Light. Yet he cannot accept it. To change his mind it takes exposure to the nemesis of Light, Morgan- who is Kali, who is Lillith, who is Ishtar.... Only then does Stephen accept his destiny- and the sacrifice of the mortal pleasures of ignorance, progeny, and an easy death. The only thing he doesn't sacrifice is Love, for that is the very fabric of the Universe itself- the Universe that he now serves. Based on the Marvel Comics series, this film will probably disappoint some purists. There is no mention of Tibet, or the accident that cost Dr. Strange the use of his hands (in the comics he was a surgeon, here he is a psychologist), and the Ancient One is a westerner (John Mills) and lives in New York. However, the spirit of the original is definitely here. I saw this on television in the late 70's and never forgot it. A measure of how good it is, is the fact that it was released on video even though it was a made-for-TV pilot for a series that never materialized.

Here, in this treatment, we have a vampire who is so totally without any bit of good in him that he is truly Evil. He is a Fiend, blood dripping from his fangs [which we never see]. His vengeance is so horrible on the people who stand in his way that is it reminiscent of Jack the Ripper. It goes without saying that this vampire has enormous, even overpowering sex appeal, but it also is plain that his female tools or victims [usually both] are no important to him than lab rats. He is a serial killer more than the quasi-romantic image of the good man who happens to be a vampire; his killings are not the result of some awful childhood or catastrophic emotional event. He is a monster. Our sympathises are not with him, but with his victims. Real monster movies are actually rather rare. This is one of them, and even though the posse of vampire killers are such flat and 2-D characters that it makes the vampire look complex by comparison, the film is worth watching for its different treatment of the vampire as villian. Richard Lynch, who is far from conventionally handsome, has a horrifying way of grabbing your attention and keeping it squarely on him. It's partly the fascination of the rabbit by the cobra, but also the unconscious fear of the power of sexual attraction. The novel "Dracula" fairly pants with sexual heat all through it, to an amzaing degree considering it's overwrought, even purplish Victorian prose. The Victorian age was famous for it's amnesiac denial of sexual drives, while the studied avoidance even vague sexual terms in polite conversation ["limb" vs. "leg"] drew attention to it...the 12-foot aligator in the living room. In this case, it's the 6-ft naked sexual aggression of a man-like beast. You'd like to ignore it, but you can't. This is the jet engine that drives the immense popularity of the vampire myth. This movie, unlike many of it's kind, lets you feel the power. I wish this movie was available for purchase. It hardly airs on TV anymore. No true vampire/Dracula afficianado should count his or her education complete without seeing it. ... Read more | |

The performances are of course terrific, as Cusack and Robbins really let loose and go wild on screen, sacrificing almost anything for a joke. Sometimes the jokes work, sometimes they dont, but it doesn't matter because you will be so enamoured with the strangeness of film to complain about those few moments that don't quite turn out right. And the ones that do - well I cant say you'll be rolling on the floor, because again, its bizzare enough so that you'll probably simply be struck with some unsure smile for the duration of the movie, but then you'll watch it again... and again... and again. Why? Because, it's a film thats genuinely different. And honestly, how many movies can you really say that about? Not many.
