5-0 out of 5 stars Passion in Paradise-At First Glance is it What it Seems ?
I enjoyed the movie from begining to end.It made 100 minutes fly by without the thought of leaving my chair ever entering my head.Filled with intrigue and romance, not to mention a murder your constantly speculating on, your attention is entirely consumed by the plot and energy of the story and it's cast. Alfred,a ruggedly good looking guy, with the undertone of electricity and animal magnetism no woman could resist, was done dynamically by Assante. This movie starts off by showing you a taste of paradise, with all it's beautiful weather, unending supply of perfection and tons of money. The perfect life....or is it? Father's trying to force daughters to marry who they choose for them, not who they love. Daughters rebelling against parents. Then a new guy that doesn't quite fit in with the rest. Throw in a dash of organized crime,a turn against ones own country, and of course a murder and it's hard to see paradise anymore. I would strongly encourage you to watch this movie if your up for some rivetting entertainment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Living a CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES
This lovely, sensitive interpretation of Dylan Thomas's poem is loyal to the original, but adds appropriate dialogue and a wonderland of touching pictures and characters. We have viewed it for the first time and are drawn into the film at every new frame. It seems just right for all ages and makes one quite nostalgic for the days of our youth and those special times with family and friends when small towns and simple acts meant love was every where around us. We recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must see" each Christmas
This is a delightful story of a young boy in Wales. It commences with the grandfather and his grandson at the home of the child's parents on a Christmas Eve.(The narrator and grandfather played by Denhom Elliott) The child is given a beautiful snowglobe by his grandfather as a Christmas gift. The grandfather had received the snowglobe many, many years earlier when he was a boy and the child asks "tell me about your life when you were young, Grandad" -- so the story begins of Christmas's long gone by in Wales, Gt. Britain. The story is simple, Dylan Thomas' words are beautiful, and this is a video that can be watched every holiday season by all the family. I encourage everyone with young children to see it. Life was much simpler in those days. Hopefully it will never go out of print.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Good But...
This film version of Dylan Thomas's Christmas story is very good. BUT...the audio recording read by the author is truly an aural pleasure! Also, years ago I saw a TV production of this story by the National Theater for the Deaf that was beyond words. Please contact them and encourage them to make this simple, stunning, and (in my opinion) superior presentation available.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas gem!
This is a beautifully realized film of Dylan Thomas's prose poem, "A Child's Christmas in Wales." The poem, wonderfully narrated by Welsh actor Denholm Elliott, is set within a framing story of a grandfather (Elliott) telling his young grandson about his own childhood Christmasses. The casting is marvelous and the cinematography is good, but it is Dylan Thomas's words and Elliott's narration of them that lifts this film into the ranks of Christmas classics. I saw it first on PBS, and was delighted to see it come out on video. Watching it each year has become a family tradition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely little film
This beginning to be one of my favorite Christmas movies. When I'm getting too overwhelmed with a modern Christmas - the consumerism, the excessiveness of it all - I can put this movie on and get swept back to a time when Christmas was simple and, as seen through a child's eyes, wonderous. This movie captures the book's charm and expands upon it. The one downside is that it is a bit slow-paced, however, that might make it the perfect movie to show the children Christmas Eve to make them sleepy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound and moving film on love.....
This film is one of the best and truest films on the subject of REAL LOVE! I've been watching it ever since I was a kid and though I didn't understand it, it has certainly shaped what I believe and hope for in a relationship. The Holy Father is astounding on his insight to human beings and their souls! The play that this film was based on is even better!
JOHN PAUL II, WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding portrayal: the power and dangers of love.
Screenplay written by Karol Wojtyla (later Pope John Paul II). It is a thought-provoking examination of love between a man and woman and of the choice between fidelity and infidelity which will mark their future. Two couples' experiences are contrasted with great effect through the romantic relationship of their two children. While this is a profound film, it is by no means slow. The acting is very good (Hussey is superb), and the plot moves nicely to its conclusion. I would recommend this movie for anyone living or contemplating a love relationship. If you can, see it with the one you love; if you can't, see it yourself. Either way, you won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Wife
The Christmas Wife has been one of my all time favorite movies for over 10 years now and I never get tired of watching it.
As a matter of fact I watch it at least 3 times every Christmas season and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes good sentimental movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding loss
This short drama was satisfying to watch even though there wasn't much action. It was almost like a two-person play. It tells how an apparently strong person copes with the dramatic change in his life caused by the death of his dear spouse. Christmas traditions are not the same, so the widower adapts by renting a companion. Jason Robards and Julie Harris are delightful to watch, so professional.

3-0 out of 5 stars sweet

The actors are a delight and they do maintain the viewers interest. HOWEVER; The ending of this picture leaves one suspended above the play.
To me, this film is a fill in the blanks movie that leaves the viewer wondering if this is all there is. Still I found it a delight to watch and a very wholesome picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fix some hot chocolate and start a fire in the fireplace...
This is a surprisingly good drama for a lazy, frosty, Christmas-season evening. It's well-acted, well-written, and well-crafted -- definitely sentimental, but without being fluffy or soppy. The cast is led by veteran acting greats Jason Robards and Julie Harris, which in itself should make the movie worth a consideration.

Robards portrays John Tanner, a recent widower who doesn't quite know what to do with the changes imposed upon his life. When the annual family trip to the cabin for Christmas is jeopardized, he attempts to rescue his traditions in a radical way: he finds a dating service and "hires" a woman to be his family and spend the Christmas weekend with him. Julie Harris is the sad, perceptive, and mysterious woman, Iris, who agrees to be his "Christmas wife" - but only if he will ask her no questions about herself.

This is a quality "G" movie (at least, the version shown on television). At the risk of sounding sexist, I would say this is a woman's movie, but some men may find it not objectionable. Children may not be interested in a character (as opposed to action) movie about middle-aged people, but if they are, their parents won't have to worry about what they're watching. Adults who have some experience with age or loneliness may discover a tale striking quite a responsive chord.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Over 50", Life 101
If you're over 50 this movie will be a great rainy afternoon delight. It is NOT a comedy! It is a hard look at life and what it brings. Jason Robards and Julie Harris are two of the classic actors of the last century. Just to see them act together is enough, but the sweet story of how life throws rocks in our path and the way we remove them is great! Treat yourself to perfection! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun
Although there are blatant references to "Lolita" (dig Alicia Silverstone in her huge sunglasses and swimsuit gazing up at Cary Elwes), "The Crush" is a suitable thriller despite being very predictable.

The premise is simple: Silverstone plays a fourteen year old who develops a crush on Elwes, who is a 28 year old newspaper reporter and has just moved into an apartment on the grounds of her family home. Elwes is dating Jennifer Rubin, and she's aware of the vibes being sent by Silverstone. But Elwes is either naive or enjoys the attention (you decide!!!) and puts himself into several compromising situations with Silverstone. Silverstone, who's clearly unstable, tightens the noose from then on, and eventually attempts to kill Elwes. The ending, also predictable, is appropriate.

This certainly isn't going to be on anyone's list of all-time best films, but it's worth owning on DVD (despite the fact that there's little that separates the VHS from the DVD). You'll enjoy popping it in every once in a while for a good scare. If nothing else, guys, you'll be very careful who you flirt with after watching this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scream Queen Of The 90's!
Similar to the role Glenn Close played in "Fatal Attraction", Alicia Silverstone is terrifying as an obsessive teen who is "crazy" about the 28 year old living in her parent's guest house. After being told several times that she's too young for him, and finding out that he already has a girlfriend, she goes on a methodical rampage against the two. Tearing both of their lives apart. Tension builds throughout the film with various scary parts and an exciting, violent ending. Way better than "Swimfan".

4-0 out of 5 stars The Crush... True story
The movie is not only fun but a must see.. and the movie is now in my all time collection! well, I watched the movie years back but I had to recall the story of the movie and watch it again and again, as I am facing almost the same situation.. well I'm 25 and she is 15 and she has a crush on me 'no fun, trust me' and her mother (not father, like in the movie) is almost as same as Darian's father.. I've watched the movie thrice in last two days to understand few things about her moves.. I think you'd enjoy to understand the movie like i do (now) :)its fun and entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Crush
Great Fun! If I hadn't seen it on t.v., I never would have seen it anywhere else. I saw it while flipping through channels and was late to a meeting because I couldn't stop watching it, I had to see what was going to happen in the end.

3-0 out of 5 stars Watch Out!
Darian Forrester (Silverstone) is a 14 year-old Girl rapidly blossoming into a woman at a immense rate. Her IQ is above average and her eye for detail flawless. After earning himself a job working for a decidedly well thought-of magazine, Journalist Nick Eliot (Elwes) scans the neighbouring houses with a room to let. Shaken-up after practically knocking down Darian after she skated into the wheels of his arriving car, he notices that her residence has a guest house to let and after viewing the named house, snaps it up with no more then a few Ums and Errs. After a few days, Darian is smitten with the new lodger and things begin to lead themselves down the wrong path. After a kiss initiated by Darian, Nick backs off, and dismayed by his actions, warns off Darian. Skimpily clad in diminutive bikini's, provocative clothing and breath-taking body language, Darian refuses to take no for an answer and subsequent to attacking his lover, persists to abuse her welcome, with the police having to stand in within the concluding half hour.

Suffocating and thought-provoking, this a tall-tale that mirrors many a headline currently splashed on newspapers worldwide. Shapiro's direction is at times warped and the pacing does have its flaws, but yet it seems to work out and leaves you fulfilled with the end product. By far Silverstone's Best role yet, with only 'Clueless' to contend with, while Elwes's appeal is strong, and sporadically exasperating, is every now and then overruled by his 14 year-old counterpart.

A great movie with bright sets and a proficient script, this is in no way Cinema at its best, but yet a worthy edition to your home library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!
This was one of my all time favorite movies!! It was filmed just outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (my home town) in Stonewall. My cousin also did the make up for the movie and I have some pictures of the making of the movie! Anyways... this was a GREAT movie and if you can get a hold of it...you'll LOVE it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Find my way home
I saw this movie on a plane trip about 2 years ago, and that song still runs through my head. This movie is great, and that should be all that is required to watch it. A powerful message, and the ending is definetly not sappy compared to recent movies that have been put out by producers.

5-0 out of 5 stars realy inspiring film
this was an excellent film. gema zamprogna was amazing. the thing i liked the most was the way she showed her emotions of her father dieing in a odd way which shows the pain she was going through and that just made me emotional. but an excellent film it was.

3-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ZODIAC (MAYBE)
EDWARD JAMES OLMOS AND GEORGE DZUNDZA TURN IN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES IN THIS THINLY VEILED RECREATION OF THE ZODIAC MURDERS OF SAN FRANCISCO. OLMOS' ROLE STARTS OUT PURPOSEFUL BUT ENDS UP PATHETIC WHILE DZUNDZA BEGINS AS WEIRD AND TURNS PREDATORY. IT WAS GREAT TO WATCH THEIR CHARACTERS CHANGE AS THEY PLAYED OFF OF ONE ANOTHER. WHILE IT WAS INTERESTING THAT THE SCOREKEEPER'S VICTIMS AND M.O. CLEARLY PARALLELED THOSE OF THE ZODIAC, I FEAR THAT THIS FILM WOULD ONLY BE A 2 STAR AFFAIR (AT BEST) FOR THE NON-ZODIAC BUFF. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Zodiac Killer case revisited
A San Francisco detective is obsessed with catching a serial killer who has been killing people for over 20 years. When the detective learns that he has only a few weeks of life left, he tries his one last shot - taking the suspect for a ride down memory lane, hoping to force him into a confession...

What makes the movie interesting to true crime buffs like myself ;) is the fact that it's very obviously based on the never-solved case of the serial killer "Zodiac" from San Francisco area in the 1970s. The movie is a faithful recreation of the "canonical" crimes of the Zodiac, with Edward James Olmos starring as an SFPD detective clearly modelled after Inspector Dave Toschi (who hunted the real Zodiac).

....

Unfortunately, the film concentrates on a certain theory proposed by one recognised writer...This almost spoiled the movie for me, as I find many aspects of this theory annoying in the extreme. Still (and in spite of its ending, as realistic as the idea of Jack the Ripper being the Duke of Clarence), so far it's the best movie on the Zodiac out there (the 1970s movie is reportedly too silly to watch), and it has a nice musical score, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love It Deadly
Malcolm McDowel is great in this gutsy small picture with big ideas. Cora Fell (Hidie Von Palleske) tells a haunted mythical tale that links us to times past of pirates and ghost ships, but this is the future and its even darker. In a world where the sky burns orange under global warming even the ocean seems a desert, the ship is navigated by an ugly-cute neural-implanted 90 yr old "baby" in some cyber-knetic fluid. Everyone on this ship is mad, like nuts, some just show it earlier than later.

Michael Pare plays it nicely (he's the bad guy and McDowell the good guy), in fact they all play it straight. I'm sure the filmmakers (the team of Daniel D'or and G. Phillip Jackson, I think they're the same folks who are doing TV's Starhunter) know they are working with low cash, you can see them wink at the audience, but instead of all being toung-in-cheek, they don't cop out, they have fun with the film. Mackenzie Gray is also convincing as a nutso first mate, an explosives expert with a bad case of the nerves.

I for one also really liked Gweneth Walsh (Star Trek -where she also confronted McDowell), she's the sexy manipulator without being typically overt about it, except she was overt about looking like she was having fun.

Very nice cybernetic killing machine the ultimate fem-tek fatale I say. I'd like to see this picture with a bigger budget and tighter editing. Good movie overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Ride, Wierd Sea
This is a good surprise, its a strange l'l movie, but kept me entertained and intriugued. So it looks like it didn't have the most money in the world, but it kept the surprises coming and a unique SF feel. McDowel is good, Michael Pare is different (A bad guy) and that's OK Gweneth Walsh has fun with her bits. If the regular SF stuff that looks all the same and tells the same story bores you, you'l probably really like this.

The female Killer Cyborg that moves like a dancer is a neat invention.

1-0 out of 5 stars DRIVEL, PURE DRIVEL !!!
Another one in a series of lame, cheap movies from Producers Network Associates (PNA) -- Greystone International -- Danforth Studios -- or whatever the heck they're calling themselves nowadays. "The Deadly Wake" is a deadly bore that stars Michael Pare. In fact Michael Pare seems to star in all the films of these guys and this has had the overall effect of ruining the actor's once promising career.

Here's what you can expect from this movie if you're foolish enough to actually rent or buy it: cheap sets, low-grade script, horrible acting, and special effects which look as though they were put together by a mogoloid monkey. There's absolutely nothing to recommend here, so much so that I'm surprised the "film" even managed to get made. Who on Earth was foolish enough to hand these guys money to make it?

Do yourself a favor and watch static on your TV, you'll get a heck of a lot more enjoyment out of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is rare Scientific Fantasy. (Not a Science Fiction)
Most people can't understand my grade to this movie.

This movie is not a Science Fiction. This is too easy to be called as "sience". This is Scientific Fantasy. (There are some other genres like this, ex: Space Fantasy(Star-Wars))

I'd watch this movie on cable TV. I don't know first beginning story.
Surely, most items of this movie are sucks as a Science Fiction.
(Story is sucks as any genre!)
But thay are pretty fantasy mood.
Baby computer is urgly, but it can be watched.
And Proxate building on the sea... that seems to be a dark elf's house on the water.

However, best important thing is the woman who remains foot watermark.
She is a elf. Maybe director set she as a elf.

Last, killingmachine. She is pretty and so sexy! But her action too short. She is best valuable item on this movie.

She is really rare item. This is Japan style character. Dancing killing machine is never seen on other movie. (There are many girl machines, killing machines, and dancing machines, but no dancing-kiling-girl machine)

Story is surelly sucks, but only the mood of movie is best. Dark future, cool misterious, red tone screen, fetish girl, classic elf woman.
And cool design proxate building.
(Two women in proxate were pretty good design.)

Good points of this movie are only these:
1.Girl killing dancer machine(better than killing machine)
2.Foreverly woman
3.Proxate building
4.Nice dark mood. Cool misterious.
5.Evil woman in proxate.

The 'proxate buildiing' and 'sea', and three women(includes machine).
Only these, this movie has value to watch.

But money...?

2-0 out of 5 stars Who Financed This Mess?
I think our dear Malcolm had some pretty wicked overproof in that bottle and decided to share it with the crew while this film was made. I recommend you drink plently before watching this freaky flick, too.

Basically a bomb and totally incoherant, I gave it an extra star for occasional freakiness. It actually could have been a decent movie, but it just has no structure at all and genuinely makes no sense. Might be worth a peek on late night cable, but look at the price on this issue! That's about the scariest thing of all.

A talking embryo floating in a bottle that talks isn't freaky enough to make it worth sitting through the rest of this film, which seems to have been made as a tax write off. Avoid!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-acted adaption of a true story
Based on a true story, "Gift of Love" tells the story of a high school student, Daniel Huffman (played by Elden Henson), who looks to have a promising future in football. He is very close to his grandmother, Shirlee Allison (Debbie Reynolds), who helped to raise him.

Shirlee becomes quite ill, and is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Daniel selflessly gives her one of his, a choice that results in him never being able to play football again.

The movie was obviously made to "tug at the heart strings"; it's packed with saccharine, if you catch my drift. The acting, however, is top notch - with fantastic performances from Henson and Reynolds, especially. Ed Marinaro also stars as Daniel's coach. ... Read more

This movie was hilarious. It is definitely a movie for teens. I am not joking when I say that this monkey walks, talks, and acts like a human. Plus he throws his balls at unsuspecting victims. You will fall over laughing, especially if you are under the influence. The jokes in this movie are not funny at all, but this monkey acts like he is constantly on crack, and he always jitters and shakes. Plus you can tell that everytime he is snowboarding that someone pushed him down the mountain and he is trying to stop, but he can't. In one scene you can see the guys hand pushing him off of a jump. It was probably the funniest thing I have ever seen. Go see this movie... no, wait, go buy this movie! It will be worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
Of the 3 films in the MVP trilogy, I think MXP might be the best. I watched this one with a few friends before going out on a Saturday night. The comic hijinks of Jack and the other monkeys, as wells as the complete aloofness of every adult in the movie who fails to see Jack climbing trees, eating food, and sneaking onto airplanes dressed in a sombrero and pancho is incredible. This film sells itself. 1 monkey + 1 snowboard = awesome. Is MXS (Most Extreme Surfer) next? I hope so.

5-0 out of 5 stars MXP Rocks
My kids love the whole MVP series, and this one is just as enjoyable as the others! Highly reccomended!!!! By the way, the music from the Jay's band in the movie is great - and I found that the songs are from a real band whose cd you can buy here on Amazon. They are called the dynamite boy and all the songs from the movie are on their Somewhere in America CD too.

Jack is cool in this movie with his snow boarding and I think you will enjoy the movie, so GO FOR IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best movie ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really love this movie. Jack the chimp is so cute and a really good snowboarder he rocks. Jay the big brother is the cuttest guy i have ever seen and his band Rocks. Jay seems like the best big brother i wish my brother was like him. Pete is the best snowboarder i wish i could go snowboarding with him he is so cute too. I wish Jay's band had a c.d.. Oh and i really love the outtakes and the music video. And the brain freeze scene is so funny. I really love this movie it makes me want to snowboard and start a band. This movie rocks rocks rocks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Stellar Made For T.V Movie Ever!!!
I'm not a big fan of made for t.v. movies. I don't mind watching them once in a while, but they're not the best thing to waste your time doing. Anyway, I had read the little childrens book to my sister a couple years ago, so I decided I'd watch it when I heard Disney was going to make it. The book was about trouble maker Zenon who lives on a space station in the future being sent to earth to stay with her grand parents. She found it booring until her dog had puppies. I thought the book was so stupid. But Disney wrote a completely different story for the movie. In the movie, Zenon is in 7th grade, not 5th grade like in the book. When she is accidentially in the wrong place at the right time, she witnesses someone loading a virus into her space station that she lives on. When no one believes her, her parents ground her to earth, which is considered a very dangerous place to live because of pollution and earthquakes and such. She has a little trouble fitting in, but she ends up falling in love and discovers everyone in the space station is about to die because of the virus. Now she dosen't have much time to get back into space and save the day. I reccomend if you haven't seen it, that you go to your local video store and rent it, or maybe wait and see if the price drops. I guarantee you'll like it. Disney recently made a sequal called "Zenon: The Zequel." The first one was better though!

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie sucks!!
This is the most horrible movie i have ever seen, or course not counting 2 or 3. Now disney has put out some good stuff but this is just crap. They Hire a horrible lead actress, with a supporting that at this time while staring in the 3rd probably has had breast implants. Disney needs to clean up its act and hire som good actors and actresses.

From a 1984 performance (live, but with many voices dubbed) at Canada's Stratford Festival comes this version of Iolanthe, the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta in which the residents of Fairyland confront the House of Lords. A work in its authors' most whimsical vein, Iolanthe combines satire with fantasy, acid humor with voluptuous melodies, in the improbable way that G&S could pull off so skillfully.

Stratford's production places the story within a frame--a 19th-century theater company's performance of Iolanthe. The device doesn't serve much purpose, except to imply the director's uncertainty that audiences can swallow this material without mediation. That anxiety shows in the production's overwrought style. The performers try hard, though: The distinguished contralto Maureen Forrester, while not exactly funny as the Queen of the Fairies, is as game as can be, letting herself be flown in on a swing and dressed up as the god Mars. As the Lord Chancellor, Eric Donkin is amusing but restrained, perhaps laboring to keep up with the ferocious lyrics he has to get through.

Productions of Gilbert and Sullivan these days often include rewritten lyrics and dialogue; this one is loaded with them. The extent of the updating will alarm some viewers, but it's wholly in the spirit of the piece, since Gilbert's script is full of topical allusions that he wouldn't have expected to be meaningful more than a century later. Many of his political asides have, of course, been replaced with Canada-specific references, which will be of only limited value to non-Canadians. --David Olivenbaum ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Much Sullivan and less Gilbert
While I agree for the most part with the other review, I'll add that the G&S purist will be very disappointed by the arbitrary changes and additions to Sullivan's contribution and very, very disappointed by the pretty much irrelevant local references and such arbitrary re-wordings (e.g. to allow a needless change of "five and twenty" to "twenty five". If you really, really like G&S, give this recording a pass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, yeah, but it IS fun!
I just watched this VCR with two children, aged 7 and 10, who don't beg, in general, to stay up and finish an opera (ok, an OPERETTA!). We had a joyous time of it in three tranches. To me that's a solid two thumbs way, way up.

Yes, the sound quality is infuriatingly bad and the "videoization" of a stage work intrusive and distracting. The slip-sync dubbing amounts to a face slap at times. And yes, the voices aren't uniformly wonderful.

But the staging is a delight with clumbsy faeries, caped nobles, pop-up book sets, stage hands continually caught in the frame and inventive swinging entries. It kept us all charmed. And glued.

If the story, and its CBC modernizing, is a tad unaccessible, so what! The music and its delivery are riveting and my girls were there giving the TV a standing O as the credits rolled. Way to do, Stratford!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stratford demonstrates zero respect for beautiful theater
In 1882, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan introduced a beautiful opera at the Savoy theater. Iolanthe was at once human and funny, moving and satirical. Unfortunately, this Stratford production seems to have latched onto the phrase "comic opera" and decided that drama and acting are insignificant, and that each scene -- in some cases, each line -- should be considered in a vacuum to maximize comic effect. The result is a series of scenes that betray characters as massively inconsistent and unbelievable, and a show that is much less than the sum of its parts.

I don't generally mind rewrites in cases where the original lyrics would be unintelligible; I think it's perfectly reasonable to write "Captain Shaw" or "Ovidius Naso" out of Iolanthe. But to a modern American audience, many of the dated political jokes are no better understood.

All told, the musical changes, the lyric changes, and especially the (lack of nuanced) acting indicates a complete disrespect for the original product, and makes one wonder why Stratford is (at least nominally) doing G&S at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spirited interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan
Like so many opera films, this presentation is a film of a stage show. Rather than ignore this, the producers include behind the scenes vignettes of the company and stage hands. These brief interludes provided amusing transitions between parts of the opera and were not overdone. The playful spirit is in keeping with the irreverant tone of sirs G&S.

It is too common these days for producers to try to upgrade the words of G&S operas, both for political correctness and to make them more topical. This production is no exception. Unfortunately, the new references often are so topical that they have no relevancy a few years later. For example, the wonderful line, "When Wellington thrashed Bonaparte, as any child can tell, the House of Peers, throughout the war, did nothing in particular, and did it very well!" is replaced by some drivel about the mostly forgotten Falkland war. At least the changes are documented in the DVD version.

There are no captions or sub-titles available on this DVD, which is unfortunate. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful version of Iolanthe. The players are in good voice and they clearly understand that this is comic opera. This Canadian company ranks among the most refreshing modern interpreters of Gilbert and Sullivan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
As a comparative newcomer to G&S, Iolanthe was the second live presentation my wife and I saw (in Halifax, Nova Scotia). Upon purchasing the video, we found that the Stratford players and their "twists" really made it appear to us that we were being entertained by watching Iolanthe for the first time. The presentation was enjoyable, well produced, the cast was well-selected, and the orchestra marvelous. Oh yes - the goings-on before and after the play were appreciated too. I have no idea what a true aficionado of G&S would think about this version - but in the eye of this beholder - it was beautifully done. ...

The acting is good, however it does leave one guessing.

A great movie with bright sets and a proficient script, this is in no way Cinema at its best, but yet a worthy edition to your home library. ... Read more
