3-0 out of 5 stars "Kate...Kate, I think I killed somebody!"
Those haunting words. One only a young Tom Hanks, with his emotionally cracking voice, could pull off. It's a wonder as to how many varieties of plaid shirt was worn during the 80's as well as the varying sizes of bad hair. I mean really, every scene was getting ready for a hoe down. But, I digress. Hanks, of course would go to greater triumphs (Bachelor Party, The Man with One Red Shoe, The Money Pit) but this was the stick at the beginning of the popsicle my friends. Who else but Hanks could say, "What's a fecalite?" with coviction, or am I quoting the book. Who cares, "brilliant" dialogue nontheless. A young unknown Chris Makepeace (as opposed to the old unknown Chris Makepeace) delivers a performance worthy of praise by extras everywhere. Bravo, Chris, bravo. That being said, he's head and shoulders abouve the rest of the cast, except Hanks, whom he stands at elbow height (at least in this movie). In conclusion, 'Mazes and Monsters' is an enjoyable diversion after a pizza, a few random encounters with some elves and an heated debate as to who is the better captain, Kirk or Picard? Delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars "I am the Maze Controller""
Mazes and Monsters is one of the few Tom Hanks movies I do like, that big piano routine in BIG is what I used to think of when I thought of Tom Hanks. But not after seeing this RPG related movie on TBS nearly 19 years after its release on TV. His performance was incredible, not mention that outfit he was sporting in the final scene, I mean could those shorts have been any shorter????, I beg you to imagine. "Freelic, It must have been a wise and powerful holy man that restored you to the living", says Tom. Now come on you either loved that line if you ever played D&D, or you thought it was just plain ridiculous if you never have, either way it made the movie. I recommend that anybody who has ever rolled a twenty side die buy this movie, and anybody who loves Tom should at least see it. Josh

2-0 out of 5 stars Campy Halloween Party Fun for MST3K fans!
What I wouldn't give to see what the gang from MST3K could do to this one. You will shriek in horror and howl hysterically! This not-so classic fright-fest starred Tom Hanks well before he had a copious choice of film projects. The plot is dreadfully simple, and simply dreadful. A Fantasy Role-Playing game drives a college dweeb to insanity when the players take it too far for his fragile little psyche to withstand, proving that even the highest of the Hollywood echelon had to just pay the rent sometimes. This mock-worthy made for TV movie aired in 1982 and had audiences wondering why they were watching this crap in the first place. Mazes and Monsters did for Dungeons and Dragons what Reefer Madness did for marijuana. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll kiss 75 minutes of your life good-bye! Get this for your next party with your wittiest friends and have some hearty laughs. You'll be glad you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now let this be a lesson for you.
Yep, first there was "Reefer Madness" (1936) ASIN: 6305396493 telling of the pitfalls of smoking reefers. Now there is mazes and monsters madness. An undetectable force that you are powerless to resist.

Tom Hanks as usual fits comfortably in any role he plays. The theme may be a little dated, but it is still fun to watch and speculate "There but for fortune go I".

As you have guest the story is about a role-playing game that gets out of hand. Tom Hanks plays a person that might not be quite stable and the addition of this game feeds his fantasies. This leads to a mysterious disappearance. This is more of a physiological movie than a blood and guts type. Before people say what is real or not, different people will come to this movie from different backgrounds, and go away a little closer.

3-0 out of 5 stars 80's cheese horror, c'mon you know you want some.
Compared to the last horrible movie I reviewed (The Dead hate the living) this was like drinking water from the Holy Grail after walking 666 days in the desert. Of course compared to good horror movies from this time period, it stands in much of the same low budget movie fare like Frogs and Pirahna. I wouldn't recommend actually paying money for it, but it's definitely worth checking out on a rainy night when nothing else is on.

The story: At a family party on some privately owned island, a young lady loves her dogs and her dogs love her. A drunken guest loves the way the lady looks loving her dogs so he tries to love her. Upset with his drunken gestures, the young lady slaps the drunken guest lovingly across the face. Angered by her slap, the drunken guest lovingly begins raping her. The loved dogs lovingly become upset with the drunken guest and rip through their fence and lovingly start mauling the loving drunken guest. The young girl lovingly tells her dogs to stop and then she lovingly smashes the loving drunken guest in the head with a brick of love, killing him. She gives birth to his love child. 30 years later two teenage couples crash their boat on this island and quickly become monster fodder. You might notice the monster will remind you a lot of the monster from Funhouse, another cheesy 80's flick. However you never actually get to see the monster clearly or anything for that matter because of the low light use. A lot of the time you'll be staring at a black screen with silly grunting and leaves shuffeling sound effects.

Bad acting, weak plot, and slight nudity, it's the stuff you expect from such movies and it delivers. Watch it if you are bored and want to strain your eyes looking at a black screen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rare, probably not worth it.
This made the rounds on HBO and Cinemax and then disappeared into obscurity.

Two couples crash on an apparently deserted island. I say apparently because they are definitely not alone.
With the threat of death from exposure, they venture inward and discover an H.P. Lovecraft reject living in isolation. He is not happy. Slasher movie stuff follows until the denouement, which is ripped right out of Friday the 13th Part 2.

The acting is pretty stiff. Special effects are non-existent except for the killer/thing. Dialogue is awful. I kinda liked it. It takes me back to the awful early eighties horror that was churned out every couple of months. Janet Julian looks pretty Janet-licious here. There is nothing actively offensive to my brain. That's better than most horror films right there.

As with most of the horror films from this time that you've never heard of, there is a reason that you've never heard of them. Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm St. were better movies and they've survived the test of time. Humongous didn't and slipped into the cheap bin at the grocery store.

Recommended only if you like horror and have seen just about everything else. Otherwise, recommendation to avoid.

2-0 out of 5 stars Snore-Fest
Even for slasher fans, this flick may be a chore to sit through. Besides the fact you never get a half-decent chance to see the main monster/bad guy, all of the outdoor night scenes are so incredibly dark and muddy you're actually left to guess what's going on. (I'm not exaggerating, either.) Definitely a by-the-books slasher film in all other regards, but without the early-80's blood and gore. Only recommended for insomniacs.

3-0 out of 5 stars WACKY BUT, GOOD SCARY MOVIE
If you are a fan of scary movies from the 80's,then you will love this one. A group of young adults go cruising on a vacation and have an accident, causing them to be trapped on a deserted island. Little do they know that a HUMONGOUS HUMONGA awaits them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very, very rare movie!
If your a collector of rare movies get this one, it might even be in the places you might least expect, maybe even in a second-hand store. I had this title, the discontinued original copy but traded it for another movie. The acting is bad but it's alittle interesting to watch as are most B films, I can't give you much explanation except at the beggining a woman gets raped and the dogs of the island kill the man who raped her. Then some teenagers were stranded on the island and there is some sort of monster chasing them around and so on. Well like I said buy it for a cheap laugh! ... Read more
