5-0 out of 5 stars Chesney Hawkes Is Incredible
It doesn't get any better than Mr. Chesney Hawkes in the underrated, under appreciated, Buddy's SOng. His performance is riveting as well as the soundtrack which he wrote the songs too.

All in all, this movie is worth the $92 just to see Chesney's face on the big screen, the man is a god! ... Read more

Description

One of Disney's most treasured animated classics comes to glorious life -- stunningly photographed on magnificent locations in India! Based on Rudyard Kipling's beloved short stories, this all-new adventure promises a journey beyond your wildest imagination! Raised by wild animals since childhood, Mowgli (Jason Scott Lee) is eventually drawn away from the jungle by Kitty, the beautiful daughter of Major Brydon (Sam Neill). Mowgli soon faces a corrupt Captain Boone (Cary Elwes), who wants both Kitty's hand in marriage and a hand on the mythical treasures of Monkey City, a place only Mowgli can find. Loyal animal friends Bagheera, Baloo, and Grey Brother must help Mowgli survive the untamed peril. All of Kipling's memorable characters spring wonderfully to life in Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK, a bold, sweeping adventure brimming with treasures for the whole family! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Simple Love Story
This movie is great - full of surprises and delightful scenes between a young British women and the rough jungle man she falls in love with. There are many funny scenes characteristic of traditional British humor, as well as witty dialogue and lovely scenary and costumes. This movie made me wish I were a kid again and could still get away with watching only Disney movies. Also, Jason Scott Lee is absolutely gorgeous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative--Best movie of 1994
The only reason I am giving this film 5 stars is that I can not give it anything higher. This film is far and away one of my all time favorite movies. I must have seen it at least a dozen times in theatres. I stumbled on JB totally by accident. On Christmas day 1994 I went to see Interview with the Vampire. Only to find that it had been pulled. Not wanting to make my trip to the theatre a waste of time. I decided to watch the Jungle Book. I braced myself for a silly childrens film. Instead I found a moving story, fit for all ages, about pure love, racism and colonialism and adventure.

The Jungle Book is about Mowgli (Jason Scott Lee) who, after a terrible mis-hap as a child, ends up growing up in the Jungle communicating with the animals. As an adult he becomes re-aquainted with his childhood sweetheart Kitty (Lena Heady) the daughter of a British officer(Sam Neal) in Victorian India and learns to become "civilized" again. Unfortunetly Mowgli crosses Kitty's then love interest (Cary Elwes). And a bunch of stuff happens which I will not go into for giving away the plot.

I will say this though this is really, really an amazing movie. The chemistry between Jason and Lena is unbelivable. It really is what love is all about. Not once do they utter the "L" word towards each other but in every scene they are together you can see the bond and affection they have for each other. Also (keeping in mind that this is a PG movie) It is so refreshing to see a couple in love without them getting physical. Cary Elwes as the movies villain is really effective and subtle. He really is slick and charming-a real cad.

I would strongly recommend this film to lovers of the above.
This film became such an obessession of mine that I wrote out the novelization just to get it out of my system. Get this movie, it is a descision that you will not regret!

1-0 out of 5 stars Look out! This is not the movie and most reviews are wrong
This is a complete rip off and unworthy of a Disney label. Packaging totally deceptive. No Jungle book film and not even any clips. Yes there are a couple of songs of poor quality. Kids very frustrated and parents upset with Disney.

Note to Amazon - you have been deceived too - you need to change the editorial review as you are contributing to the deception.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not the movie.. the reviews are wrong
The packaging is a total misrepresentation.. and the reviews here are wrong as well. The reviews talk about the movie.. I made the mistake of reading these reviews and others and bought it because my son is in Spanish immersion and wanted some fun alternatives to his usual books/videos/music. There is so much wrong with this DVD, I don't know where to start. First, there is no chance of reading along.. the story goes so fast that any child will find it challenging to read AND listen to the words - let along if they are learning to read. In addition the story is completely abridged. And while the packaging says "games" there is ONE game.. a very simple game. Three barrels move around and you have to find Mowgli under the right one. My 4 year old could do it in seconds. That's all for games. The vocabulary section is laughable. The vocabulary ranges from incredibly simple words like "boy" to highly specific words like "lily-pad" and "column" and doesn't seem to bear sufficient relation to the vocabulary in the story - sure some of the words are from the story like "panther" but many many many words that appear frequently in the story do not appear in the vocabulary. The concept of this video seemed great but this is an absolute travesty of marketing and profiteering from the movie. I wish I had not recommended it to my son's grandmother to buy for Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good old-fashioned Saturday matinee adventure film
Oh, this film could have been made for those Saturdays at the movies (25 cents to get in, popcorn with real butter, etc.) Jason Scott Lee is Tarzanly-gorgeous as the grown-up Mowgli, complete with animal sidekicks. The scene where he finds the monkey-king's treasure city is just wonderful.

This is not exactly kiddy-fare (little kiddy) for the opening scene where the tiger trashes the shikari camp are pretty scary--a flaming wagon-ride, and the tiger is pretty nasty. No gore, but still a bit much in my opinion for the early grade-schooler. Older kids and adults, however, will enjoy this worthy adventure film, with not only Jason Scott Lee, but Cary Elwes. Dramatic scenery, humor, adventure, what's not to like here? ... Read more

As a depiction of the computer-hacker underground, this movie is bogus to the bone. As a thriller, it's cartoonish and conventional. The premise (computer-happy kids hack into the wrong system, and the Forces of Repression come after them) is recycled from John Badham's 1983 WarGames. And the corporate-creep bad guy, played by Fisher Stevens, steeples his fingers and growls mossy villainous clichés. ("By the time they realize the truth, we'll be long gone with all the money.") For all its postmodern trappings the movie is working with sub-prehistoric storytelling tools. But it does succeed on one level, as a movie about adolescent bonding and alienation. The director, Iain Softley, helmed the Beatles-in-Hamburg biopic Backbeat, and he seems to have an instinct for the emotions that pull kids together around common interests and the insecurities that drive them apart. The familiar crises of loyalty and betrayal have an ache of real loneliness. It doesn't hurt that the two stars, Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy Williamson in Trainspotting) and Angelina Jolie (Gia), are just about equally gorgeous and charismatic; their longing glances steam up the screen. --David Chute ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You mess with the best you die like the rest!
There have been so many teen angst/adventure/comedy films made throughout the years and I have probably seen every one of them, but Hackers shines through like a needle in the haystack. Many of the so-called cliches of this genre are here but are acted so well that it's believable. The on screen relationship between Crash (Johnny Lee Miller) and the woman that portrays his mother is very genuine and Matthew Lillard steals the show (The way he acts in this movie shows us how Shaggy will be in Scooby Doo next year). Oh, don't worry, I didn't forget about Angelina Jolie who shows the viewer how we REALLY Want women to be like, she's a REAL LIFE HERO. But what might be the film's major achievement is that it portrays a real life society that has not been seen (I'm not talking about the HACKING aspect), the society of New York City! What many people don't realize is that New York is the closest thing in America to European Culture! Kids are very much free and they have more opportunities to become adults at a younger age because they are exposed to so much culture. It is very interesting to see how these high school kids hang out, in run down buildings that are remodeled to look like a Nintendo Convention, to the sleek underground laptop/music cafes that cater to the under 21 culture. New York is probably the only place in the U.S. where you don't have to be bored if you're not 21. The fact that they are computer Hackers is just a part of the New York scene and it radiates with curiosity and shows us that we are truly in a new age. But aside from all the technical things, the relationships the actors portray on screen are genuine and compasionate, the comedy is great, and the adventure is A+. In a film that should not have taken itself seriously, it did, and strangely it worked!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a movie, a way of life
If you want a serious movie about hackers, look somewhere else. If you want a really fun movie with good style, Angelina Jolie, and a pulsing soundtrack, Hackers may be for you.

Johhny Lee Miller (aka Crash Override or Zero Cool) moves to New York with his mother. He meets Angelina Jolie (aka Acid Burn) at school and they immediately become rivals. They come up with a hacking contest to prove who is the best. Together with their friends, Lord Nikon, Cereal Killer (my favorite), Phantom Phreak, and Joey (who is nobody without a handle) join up to take on Fisher Stevens as Mr. The Plague.

This movie is chock full of cool scenes, cool people, and skater technobabble. Sure, the hacking scenes are totally unrealistic, the people unrealistic as computer geeks, but with the awesome techno soundtrack and the style they are presented with, it is easy to overlook. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

I think that most sysadmin types probably have Mr The Plague as their role model. As a villain, he is ultra suave. As a sysadmin, he is over the top. I have never seen a computer guy with this much panache, and I don't suspect I will see another.

After you have made it through the movie a few times you can begin to watch for the fun stuff. Watch Mr The Plague's hands, especially in the flower delivery scene. When they go over to Lord Nikon's place and watch TV, consider what is playing. How many of their secret hacker books do you own?

If I could give this movie more stars, I would. This is by far my favorite hacker type movie, and if you count the number of times I have watched it, it would rank as my all time favorite over all. BUY IT NOW! It is better than Cats, you will watch it again and again.

The soundtrack is available on CD, and if you are a techno fan I suggest looking in to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hack Job
To be honest, Hackers is not a great movie, especially when it stands up against other cyber thrillers like Sneakers and War Games, but as a pure guilty pleasure it ranks as one of my favorites.

Dade Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller) is a hacker prodigy, who, along with his Mom, (Lorraine Bracco) moves across the country to New York City. Soon he meets other kids like him, forming a High School cadre of misfits and rich kids who hack into computer systems purely for fun. When one of their group is suddenly arrested, the others band together to take on a corporate hacker disguised as a security officer in an attempt to expose his plans and save one of their own.

The film is clearly influenced by, and made for, the MTV generation. Director Iain Softley tries to do the best he can. The story has been done before and is muddled by a lot of techno speak. That said, it somehow, still manages to be something that's hard to ignore. The screen lights up as a very lovely Angelina Jolie, playing Kate, makes quite a splash. Miller is your typical anti-establishment hero but some of the sequences he initiates are a lot of fun to watch. I also liked some of the cyber names the characters have in the film, like "Cereal Killer", "Acid Burn" and "Zero Cool".

The DVD's only extras are the theatrical trailer and MGM's--sounds better than it really is--8-page booklet. It features trivia and production notes about the making of the movie.

There's no rhymne or reason, as to why I like Hackers, as much as I do. (Jolie??) If you are looking for a piece of good/bad fluff this fits the bill

5-0 out of 5 stars An adorable look at L.O.V.E., S.E.X. and E.S.P.
Mark Frankel does a superb turn as the charming Daniel Becker, a body language expert who is finds himself at a loss when Katie Burrill (Amanda Pays) knows his every thought (literally). Katie is tired of men and their thoughts - "Men's minds are sewers!" she says, but a persistant Daniel doesn't let up and insists they can work things out.

It hard to believe Mark is gone, but thank goodness his memory lives on in his films and television work.

I thought Solitaire for 2 was hilarious and funny, with two wonderful actors and a fantastic story.

A romantic comedy, Solitaire for 2 is a funny, adorable film and worth a video rental! END ... Read more

Disney scrapped the songs and talking animals for its second version of Rudyard Kipling's classic novel, an old-fashioned boy's adventure that more resembles the classic Korda brothers' lush original than Disney's own animated musical. In this live-action version, Jason Scott Lee (the hunky star of Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) is the grown Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves and taught the ways of the jungle by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther. Fascinated by Englishwoman Lena Heady, whom he spots marching through the jungle on a safari, he follows her to the city. She teaches him the ways of polite society while a greedy British soldier (a sneering Cary Elwes) plots to discover the fabled lost city, where a fabulous fortune awaits. At this point the film becomes more Tarzan than Kipling. Lee's rippling form, back in the freedom of a loin cloth, is on display running through the jungle, swinging on vines, and going mano a mano with snooty Englisher Elwes. His charm and sex appeal has made this film a favorite of many adult women, but it is a family adventure, after all, with colorful locations, grand sets, and plenty of fun-loving animal moments. Sam Neill is his usual figure of moral strength as Heady's explorer father, and John Cleese imparts a little deadpan humor as the safari's absent-minded professor. Director Stephen Sommers went on to direct the 1999 action fantasy hit The Mummy. Ages 6 and up. --Sean Axmaker ... Read more

Dramatic scenery, humor, adventure, what's not to like here? ...

5-0 out of 5 stars a rare combination of the intelectual and the emotional
This film suprised me by being both informative and enjoyable. I was interested by the setting in Oxford and by how the subject matter could be used cinematically. I was not dissapointed.

The film deals with some fundamental questions of life, the universe and everything and seems to relate them back to the basic emotional experiences that we all share via some pretty high powered particle physics.

I was concerned that the film would be too cerebal, but it consistenly delivered an emotional tug with believable characters and some fine acting in places. Perhaps it was a little too simplistic and neat and tidy in the end but overall the ride was highly entertaining and informative.

A really pleasant discovery on video... I would recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A totally ludicrous film
I expected to be thoroughly entertained by this film, but I wasn't. It was very bad, and the acting didn't help. None of the 'brilliant young research students' seemed to have a brain cell between them, half the time nothing happened and when it did it was totally unconvincing. Richard Attenborough, who only appears for about five minutes, seemed to be playing Father Christmas once again and the only actor who was convincing was a James Faulkner as the token bad guy professor. Even he had to show a 'nice' side in the end and have an emotional 'reunion' with his ghastly daughter. If it had been a slasher movie, I'd have wanted her to be the first to die, so I felt quite sorry for him. A waste of time and money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wavelength
This movie features Jeremy Piven, Kelli Williams, Liza Walker, and Richard Attenborough.

Dr. Paul Higgins (Jeremy Piven) is a visiting professor of physics at Oxford University where he and his team of graduate students are working to complete Einstein's final research.... Dr. Higgins and his team have (a limited time) to unravel the most basic secret of the universe hoping to catch a glempse of the mind of God.

I rather enjoyed this movie. As a fan of Jeremy Piven, it was nice to see him in a role that was not pure comic relief and that places him in a leading part. The ensemble cast is strong and works together presenting a unified story as a whole without and noticable weak parts.

While this movie lacks the kind of pure action and violence associated with smash hollywood hits, it relys instead upon the interaction of characters and dialog to motivate the story line. This film is definitely for those who enjoy a more intelectual aproach to movies.

This movie contains only brief nudity and very limited use of foul language. END ... Read more
