4-0 out of 5 stars A cult favorite
This little movie has become legendary among animation buffs, and the creator, Mike Jittlov, a bit of a legend himself. Part of the legend has to do with all the Hollywood machinations that Jittlov set out to lampoon and that ended up biting him in the end.

Watching the film today is a bit of a disappointment for anyone raised on the special effects of the post-Star Wars era. The effects aren't anywhere as impressive as when Jittlov made this film. Jittlov's acting and that of much of his mixed amateur-professional cast is indeed amateurish, as is much of his directing. The story is weak, and is mostly one long rant against Hollywood.

Yet the film still has a certain undeniable charm, and for anyone involved in trying to self-produce a film it's a must-see- or a must own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertainment Par Excelent.
Mike Jittlov has produced film that keeps you woundering where its going next. This "full length" movie is based on the original short that was shot in a garage. The precise attention to time laps is beyond compare. Cameras dance with tripods that are being attacked by a clapper board. The best part of the film is the sound track and the sync with the action. The heads of spot-lights spin in time with the music and the wizard walks on a wall with sound efx. This a work that looks like something Disney would do. But no, one (or mabey several) Jittlov, a green robe with stars, and a full load of original talent. To quote the transfer tech in the movie "far out man". And it is. Oh and one other thing, watch out for banna peels at mile marker 13.

4-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best vanity film ever made
This is film by, for, and about film geeks. Naturally, I love it. Using mostly stop motion photography, it details the trials of Mike Jitlov trying to get his film made. It's riddled with inside jokes about the industry, many obvious but some subtle. It's also quite textured with lots of cute and clever sight gags going on in the periphery - much like a Joe Dante film. A worthy showcase for Jitlov's work, I only gave it four stars instead of five for its lack of any substantial plot, feeling more like a "The Making Of This Movie" documentary. However, the four stars definitely do not detract from its overall entertainment value, which is substantial.

As other have pointed out, most people (including yours truly) missed this when it was first released - easy to do since it only played about a week. And that's a shame - it's extremely witty and entertaining. Even more so when you consider the work involved in shooting a live action film in stop motion.

I'm fortunate enough to own one of the reportedly 1600 laser discs which were made and it's a perennial favorite of mine. However, even on VHS, if you get a chance to buy it, I can heartily recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Must See for all Film Making Students
Mike Jitlove is a Genius who managed to do more with imagination, a lot of stop motion animation, and hand creating each frame of special effects. He is light years ahead of his time with this classic movie about Making a movie. He shows the humorous/frustrating side of Hollywood and all the Guilds and Unions it takes to make a movie. I first saw this when taking Special Effects Make-up classes in Orlando. The teacher had a copy on Laser Disc. I would actually buy one of the old Laser Disc Players just to have a copy of this movie, that is how good this movie is.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie
I got this movie and watched it over and oveagain. It got me hooked on making stop-motion animation. It has a great plot and shows some of the techniques used to make a live motion picture if you want to start. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing erotic thriller
There are erotic thrillers that succeed in their genre (e.g. Basic Instinct, Jade), but this one felt awkward and contrived. I think its producers were trying to ride on the coat tails of the immensely popular Basic Instinct by attracting some of that audience. I know that's why I and friends went to see it in theatres. But we were disappointed, both in the story and the acting.
I think Sean Young is very attractive, from the first time I saw her in Dune and then in No Way Out, but her nude scenes in this film were embarrassing. I agree with someone else who said her proportions were much better in Ace Ventura and, I might add, Dr. Jeckyll and Ms. Hyde. She may have had some work done.
I admit I haven't yet seen the unrated version so it might change my opinions.

2-0 out of 5 stars pointless
The villain had no motive to commit his crimes. At least, the director chose not to reveal what it was. This movie was an utter waste of time. Sean Young is pretty, but too thin in this film. She looked far better in "Ace Ventura."

3-0 out of 5 stars The unrated version
This was the review I wrote on "Full Body Massage": "An unreal plot with senseless flashbacks, but Mimi Rogers' bod rules -- no question about it, so don't bother about her acting (or lack thereof)". Well pretty much the same thing applies here. Only Sean Young is younger and slimmer. So make sure you got the unrated version.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sean Young at her -- and everyone else's -- worst
Sean Young in this movie gives the worst performance by a big (at the time) star in a Hollywood movie. I can't think of a single exception. She looked positively drugged in this thing, and yet there's no rationale for it, so it has to be the acting. See it if only for this historic low.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Unsual and Daring
Make sure you get the unrated version - and not because it's racier (though it is), but because it has major scenes and interactions that finally make the whole film make sense. This version was not released theatrically, and it's a good example of a Director's Cut that really does make a difference. Though Sean Young might not be the best actress for the role, the film itself is a challanging look at the more dark and shaded areas of sex and power games. Steely direction by director Lizzie Bordon. Well worth the watch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dark, dry and hilarious
If you are a Paul Bartel fan (and why wouldn't anyone be!) you will absolutely love this movie. One of his best. This movie can be used as one of the best examples of why independent movies/directors are necessary in today's society. A comedy without being slapstick, I can watch this movie over and over again and still find myself laughing outloud. With Paul Bartel no longer with us (his death came much, much too soon), you need to watch this and discover a true genius who had been, unfortuantely, underappreciated in his lifetime. My only regret is that this movie is still unavailable on DVD -- what a crime!

4-0 out of 5 stars Bedrooms Farce
3 1/2 stars

A juicy comedy on the sexual foibles of the rich, that doesn't take itself too seriously. It was made by the just deceased (2000, when this was originally written) Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul), and obviously inspired by Paul Mazursky's (who plays a cameo role) own 1986 comedy, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, which was itself a remake of Jean Renoir's 1932 farce, Boudu Saved from Drowning. Jacqueline Bisset heads a motley crew of a cast. Much of the film's charm is due to Stanley Myers' (The Deer Hunter) excellent score, especially his "bed rondo."

5-0 out of 5 stars Beverly Hills 9021-OH!
From the clever mind of writer/director/actor Paul Bartel comes this hysterical, yet screwed-up view of one weekend in the lives of two Beverly Hills households. Revolving around a fading British soap opera star, Clare (Jacqueline Bisett), her recently-divorced neighbor Lisabeth (Mary Woronov) and their butlers (Ray Sharkey and Robert Beltran), the story involves every major and minor character in subplots that intervene with one another.

Featuring an all star cast with such stars as Ed Begley, Jr., Wallace Shawn, Paul Mazursky, and Arnetia Walker, the film goes through many hysterical, yet wickedly delicious turns. The most memorable one is the twisted, diabolical film opening that involves murder (it turns out to be a dream). Arnetia Walker is wonderful as the trashy, yet funny Aunt Tobel who happens to be the mistress who ruined Lisabeth's marriage to her gynecologist husband (Shawn).

The film features one of the most beautiful piano scores I have ever heard. Along with Arnetia Walker's powerful, stirring renditions of two classic songs ("Natural Woman" and "Let's Misbehave"), the film's soundtrack is memorable. It is a great shame that it was never released.

With themes involving homosexuality, bisexuality, pornography, sado-masochism, this film will not be appealing to conservatives who can't enjoy a wonderful farce of life among the rich, snobbish community known as Beverly Hills. Paul Bartel who directed, wrote, and starred in the film did an superb job of poking fun at one of America's most recognizable communities. Like many present-day comedy directors such as the Farrelly Brothers and Keenan Ivory Wayans, Bartel pushed the limits of good taste and morality with this film. The results will have most rolling on the floor laughing.

On a sad note, two of the film's stars died shortly after the film's release. Rebecca Schaeffer who played Clare's daughter, Xandra, was murdered by an obsessed fan. Ray Sharkey, passed away from complications of AIDS. Their performances will live on on what I consider one of the best farce's of the 20th Century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fan of Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov? This is a winner
After seeing ( and loving) "Eating Raoul" with these 2 geniuses, this movie just added to my devotion. The bonus in both movies is Robert Beltran- who was drop-dead gorgeous... what ever became of him?
The ...price tag for an old, used movie nearly scared me off, I guess it was worth it. It really is a terrific, hilarious movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beltran's Has Great Comic Flare
I was amazed to see Robert Beltran has great comic flare. For once he didn't die, got the girl and acted like he was really enjoying the role which made me enjoy the movie more. Even a certain scene was tastefully done because of his relaxed acting style. Beautiful smile, glad to see it so often in this surprising well done little movie. Beltran handle himself well and I got to see glimpses of the Chakotay character that he at times brought to life so well on Voyager. If you like Beltran or more adult comedy this would be for you. Beltran and a few of his fellow actors from Eating Raoul seem very comfortable with each other and it shows. Not quite as dark as Eating Raoul but gives Beltran a chance to shine again. I think he succeeds without over acting or making the character of Juan look stupid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure
This is probably the "guilty pleasure" to top all other guilty pleasures. A made for TV flick that should have been released theatrically. No major stars--though Fred Ward you may remember from "Tremors"--but one of the best made-for-TV movies ever broadcast. No major special effects--no huge explosions--but the ones in the flick are human-sized (like the Borg queen in "Strar Trek") and thus twice as interesting. A lot of in-group jokes for genre lvoers, from Ward as Detective Harry P.Lovecraft to another named Bradbury. A real popcorn thriller that's frequently hilarious to boot. And at the price, one of the best bargains going.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good.
It's very good movie, though it'd never win an award. It has few insightful things to say, though you have to over-interpret to see them. One belief I hold dear came from this movie, which is why I don't practice witchcraft is so "...Nothing has a mortgage on my soul." It gives the message not play with things you don't understand. THere should be more movies like this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT AND HILARIOUS LOVECRAFT SPOOF
Whether you are an "in the closet/out of the closet" Occultist, you'll love this film spoof of the occult in general, and HP Lovecraft in particular. The scene where Fred Ward has a conversation with a real estate agent who praises the fact that her homes are made with "the finest Thaumaturgy" and builder zombies falling in the background will split your gut...no pun intended. Anyone will enjoy this film; but Occultists will howl. Plus, Old Cthulhu never looked so good...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to blow an hour and a half

It's not incisive or heavy and it won't inspire debate, but this movie is an absolute blast nonetheless, and a nice illustration of the fact that a movie doesn't have to be vapid pablum to work as light, fun, happy entertainment. Even the violence isn't anywhere near as gory as it could have been. In general, you'll hit the rewind button 90 minutes after starting the film and be pretty pleased at the way you just spent those 90 minutes.

The story is engaging and fun, Fred Ward (who I've had a soft spot for ever since "The Right Stuff") is perfect as the inexplicably sexy roadworn gumshoe, perfect casting. David Warner plays his standard "Hi, I'm Bob Evil" type of role and does a lovely job at it.

This could have been a lot schlockier than it was if it hadn't been played so straight, but as it is, with the actors playing it *absolutely* straight, you get to enjoy the movie on a variety of levels: just suspending your disbelief and letting yourself fall into the story, and enjoying the general fun of watching it all played so straight. One little wink at the camera would have ruined it.

It's called a comedy, but I'm not sure it is -- it's just that the way the film comes together just has you chuckling out of delight more than laughter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories of when I loved this game.
I've always been a Costner fan, even when he has stretched my patience. "For the Love of the Game" did a lot for me in bringing back fond memories of the game which I used to love when I was a kid. Costner's sports movies are among his most entertaining, and bringing in Vin Skully added tremendously to the realism of this film.

Although I do agree (somewhat) in many reviewers' disappointment concerning the relationship aspect in this film, it still held enough interest for me that I enjoyed the film as a whole (heck, I almost bought it hook-line-and-sinker, but then again, I can be a real sucker). I also liked how the love aspect of the story was told in flashbacks as Chapel (Costner) was pitching the game of his life. I believe that many people may actually enjoy this film who are not baseball fans, but it sure couldn't hurt if you were.

Between 1 and 10, I give "For the Love of the Game" a solid 7. It's nice to see an actor who is athletic enough to pull off a sports movie and make it look real. Some of the scenes (where people are watching the "game" on television, ala Kelly Preston at the airport bar) looked 100 percent authentic. I would have no hesitation in viewing this film a second time, especially the dvd version (if it puts back what was left on the cutting room floor, as one reviewer indicated).

4-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Costner plays a 40 year old pitcher
Kevin Costner again stars in another baseball movie. This time he is a 40 year old pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. As the movie opens, he has dinner in his hotel room and a drink at a minibar. The next morning he awakes with 3 bad news.

(A) The team owner (Brian Cox) has sold the Tigers, (B) He might get traded, (C) His on and off girl firend he leaving him and taking a job in London, Because she tells him "you don't need me, you'r perfect with the ball and the diamond. Not the thing you want to hear when you are facing retirement.

Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) has to decide to hang it up after 19 years or have a 20th season? His girlfriend is Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston). She is his on and off girlfriend.

Then it flashes 5 years before a game in New York, when Billy and Jane first met. At first she doesn't know who he is until a tow-truck driver says, "Hey your Billy Chapel."

Anybody Kevin Costner's age might be retired from baseball. Kevin Costner had two or more baseball films before this, and when of them was called "Field of Dreams".

Soon he has to look for his grandfriend's daughter named Heather (Jena Malone). Which after first she says freedoom. The movie was directed by Sam Raimi. If you love baseball, then this is the one for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this movie
this movie has to be one of the best baseball and love movies I have ever seen. It is perfect for a date because the guy can get into the baseball part and aa little bit of the love story and the girl can get into the love story and a little bit of the baseball story without feeling let down

5-0 out of 5 stars Costner should stick to baseball and Westerns
If Costner stuck to baseball movies and westerns he would be fine. This was a really good movie. It is actually a cross between a chick flick and a sports movie. The baseball scenes are expertly done and the other part of the storyline is expertly woven into the movie. I really enjoyed this movie and think lots of other people will too. Even if you've read the book, you should still see this movie. Just my opnion though, I could be wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a baseball fan

4-0 out of 5 stars FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES
I am 67 years old, so I guess that I am a child at heart. The cast was uniformally wonderful. I am a big fan of Mara Wilson, and all of the cast performed equally well. The movie is a fantasy, with it's basic moral that faith can do miracles. While, unfortunately this is not always true, in this movie it certainly provides a feel good ending. So, please, lose your disbelief and enjoy this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balloon Farm, a charming story
Like many fantasy stories, you have to have a suspension of disbelief to enjoy it. I thought the cast did a good job. Perhaps other reviewers shouldn't have watched it many times if they didn't like it the first time. I have watched it many times and still enjoy it. I enjoy most Disney films and am a fan of Mara Wilson.

I thought the concept was well executed. I didn't expect that the balloons' contents would be what they were. I thought all of the characters gave fine performances, that includes the balloons as well.

If you have never believed in magic or can't enjoy a fantasy, this is not the movie for you. If you can you will be thoroughly entertained.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Place Where Imigination Soars!
A freindly newcomer to a drought-ravaged farm town surprises everyone by growing an amazing crop of brilliantly colored balloons in his field. While embracing the balloons as a sign of hope in troubled times, the community is suddenly torn between grouchy old Wheezle Mayfield and their mysterious new freind, Farmer Potter. Now, it's up to a little girl named Willow to save the day. Based on the book written by Jerdine Nolen.

Ballon Farm is definitely nothing special. It was made for family audiences to view and enjoy (but it seems like it was made for 3 - 8 year olds). When I watched this Disney TV movie, I thought it was downright weird and predictable. Just by watching this movie you can tell the script was written for very young audiences. You'll see the adults in the film saying and doing immature things. The only positive thing about this movie is that it's extremely funny the first time you watch it (but then afterwards it just plain boring). Not to mention Disney chose poorly in picking the cast members. Overall, Balloon Farm is a waste of time and money. DO NOT BUY! ... Read more

Written by Bruce Wagner and directed by Paul Bartel, this smart, nasty little sex farce deals with the various comings and goings within the household of a show-business family in Lalaland. Who's sleeping with who--and who wants to sleep with who--are part of the door-slamming, bed-swapping escapades in this wild send-up of contemporary life among the wealthy and the people who work for them. No one's secret is safe in this house, and most of them are very funny--in a sick and twisted way. The terrific cast includes Ed Begley Jr., Jacqueline Bisset, Ray Sharkey, Wallace Shawn, and Paul Mazursky. Not for more demure tastes. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

I think he succeeds without over acting or making the character of Juan look stupid. ...

Well worth the watch. ... Read more

The town of Waterston is facing a severe drought, so it seems odd when amysterious farmer named Harvey Potter moves into town and attempts to plant anew crop. Thus begins Disney's Balloon Farm, a tale about keeping one'strust and belief even in the bleakest of times. Rip Torn stars as the farmer whofinds skepticism in all of the residents except one, a small girl named Willow(Mara Wilson, of Matilda). Greater suspicion arises when it appears thatHarvey is able to grow a field of balloons that have seemingly magical powers. The film is quite colorful, not only in its bright hues but also in the varietyof characters that populate the town. The suspicion of Waterston's town folkgrows, however, when the highly profitable balloon farmer appears to be incahoots with a company determined to foreclose on the local farms and turn thetown into a massive garbage dump. As this is a Disney film for children, one canexpect a happy ending--but not before the tension in the town rises and allseems lost. Hope survives, however, and the film teaches its viewers that "It'swhat you believe" that counts. (Ages 7 and older) --Zachary Lively ... Read more

DO NOT BUY! ...

I am not a baseball fan but i can tell you this movie is really good it is really deep full of emotion. I don't know anything about the game basball i live in England but yet i was able to really enjoy it bcoz it doesn't really focus on the game but on the personal life of a successful baseball player. Brilliant buy it. ...

It's called a comedy, but I'm not sure it is -- it's just that the way the film comes together just has you chuckling out of delight more than laughter. ... Read more
