5-0 out of 5 stars Geniune reality
I just loved the movie, it I thought the movie was a real outstanding show of the life of a military man, and his love for a girl. I can really identify with it after being a military wife and not knowing what will happen, when your man is called off to go fight a war. It was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must see
This movie is a sleeper, and excellent movie that never got alot of publicity. It is a must have for Viet Nam movie lovers. A great combination of action, love, tragedy, and comedy set in the turmoil of the Viet Nam war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant Even Today
While this pic is set during the VietNam war, it is still very relevant today with what is going on in the world. I feel it is an accurate depiction of the horrors of war, the lonliness of the soldiers and nurses and the compassion of the military personnel. Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd are excellent as the leads and your heart aches for them when they are apart and then finally reunited. The reunion never fails to bring tears to my eyes. This should be seen by all.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE SECOND CASUALTY OF WAR
If innocence is the first casualty of war, romance is certainly the second. Both are explored in PURPLE HEARTS, Sidney J. Furie's second Vietman installment, 6 years post his classic THE BOYS IN COMPANY C. This could have been the Vietman War chick flick but instead it's a tight drama with solid acting by leads Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd, and great support by James Whitmore, Jr. (fantastic as a stoic CIA operative), Stephen Lee and the always great R. Lee Ermey, playing (what else?) a USMC gunnery sergeant. Get this one and BOYS to DVD ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent war romance story
This needs to come out on DVD. This is a fabulous romance story set during the Vietnam War. Highly recommended to those who love action adventure romances. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LIKE THIS FILM...
[w]ith dialogue as: "You have 2 choices, duck or bleed!" This isn't intended to be anything more than time wasting fare, yet there is a time accurate political element to the film proposing that the USSR was threatening to detonate a nuke in the Mid East oil fields in 1982. The film was released right around the time of Al Haig's exile from D.C. so there may have been more truth here than not. That aside, James Glickenhaus was the master of comic book violence in the early 1980's and you can see some of his influence in Quentin's first works. This is a good Saturday afternoon B flick the way the studios used to churn them out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trashy but fun
Stereotypical spy/action movie directed by James Glickenhouse, a protege of Peckinpah. Tangerine Dream fans will want to view this as much of the TD soundtrack was actually recycled for the soundtrack for Thief.

Ken Wahl starred in this movie before he became famous in the TV series Wiseguy. The plot and action are not particularly original but its still fun to sit back and watch and the music, if you are a TD fan, provides significant compensation. Break out the popcorn and enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cheesy movie
Granted, this flick is intellectually devoid. So why do I like it? Well, inspite of its many flaws (i.e., the ducks-in-a-row ambush/chorus line at the beginning [each man with a different weapon of incompatible ammo], recoiless MAC-10's that never run out of ammo, reloadable LAWs rockets, CIA headquarters being in Washington and not Langley, shall I go on....?), I think that it helps to watch it as less of a movie and more of a Tangerine Dream video. I first saw this movie in '82 when it was released (I was 15 then). Back then, my high school newspaper would editorialize about how Reagan and Haig would lead the human species to nuclear extinction. Unlike my whiney, Berkley-bound peers at the time, this movie helped me crash through the HANDS ACROSS AMERICA THE DAY AFTER I saw it and regard the possibility of global calamity as, well, exciting (the town I grew up in kind of sucked). This film does max out the intrigue of the day by way of its touching the realistic nerve of the oil matter local to a time of mile long fuel lines in America in collusion with the red menace moving northward (at least, that's what THEY said) from Central America. It has some noteworthy effects: the ski jump and the sawed-off-under-the-sleeve (Charles Bronson would've won the Oscar if he was depicted plugging some low-life that way in "Death Wish"). Oh yeah, look for a young Edward R. Rooney as the President's National Security Advisor. For those of you who still don't get it, at least respect this film for having starred "Wiseguy" Ken Wahl instead of someone like, oh, I don't know......"Navy Seal" Charlie Sheen (THEN IT REALLY WOULD'VE BEEN CHEESY!).

2-0 out of 5 stars A good Saturday afternoon flick
I saw this movies many years ago, and was reading a novel on a mid-east terrorist plot and automatically know where the guy lifted it from, so when I found out that I could get the movie I bought it!

1 very happy customer

2-0 out of 5 stars Not A Good "Soldier"
I saw this picture a few times in the theaters when I was a big fan of violent action movies. "The Soldier" is merely another violent B-movie.

An antiterrorist(A pre-"Wiseguy" Ken Wahl) and his team set out to thwart a Soviet plot to detonate a nuclear device in the oil fields of the Middle East.

"The Soldier" is simply another forgettable low-budget action movie. The film is extremely violent. Viewers who merely want to see blood and gore will not be disappointed by this picture; the film graphically shows people being shot or burned to death. In one particularly offensive scene, the movie literally shows the audience how to make an electrically-charged incendiary device. The picture isn't particularly exciting or suspenseful. The dialogue between the characters sounds unrealistic. Klaus Kinski is completely wasted in a cameo appearance as a treacherous foreign agent.

"The Soldier" is simply another trashy and forgettable action movie. The film is only for those who merely want to see violent action. For a superior antiterrorist thriller, see John Frankenheimer's "Black Sunday." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Another example of why sequels are a gamble
What does Hollywood do when a movie becomes a hit? Gather as many of the original cast together, write them a new but similar story, and film a sequel. When this is the basis for a sequel, the result is often disappointing. This particular film is a good example of this process. There's some good actors doing some good acting here, and some of the battle scenes are pretty good, but I came away with the strong impression that many of the people involved with this film were thinking, "Let's make a copy of a good film" instead of, "Let's make a good film."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission
The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission isn't that bad of a movie, great acting, and good battle scenes. The story begins when Maj.Gen. Warden(Ernest Borgnine) gives Maj. John Reisman(Lee Marvin) another hit-and-run mission: Kill a Nazi SS General who's wanting to kill Hitler. The Allied brass can't let that happen because they want Hitler alive, so what do the Allies do, train a gang of misfits, killers, psychos, and convicts and send them on a suicide mission behind enemy lines and kill the general. Give this movie a chance, I liked it. Hope it comes to DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission
Yes, the video is not like the first but it is still a great story. It had a great plot and a great ending. I reccomend this video, it is good. Besides what continueing movie is better than the first.

1-0 out of 5 stars 18 Years to Late!
After seeing the first rendition of the film, this sequel is most unfortunate. The first was canned in 1967 and this 1985 version is very disconcerting. The time from the first to the second mission was just a couple of months in 1944 but the players have all aged beyond their military retirement age. You don't make a sequel AFTER 18 years using the same principal actors portraying the same peronalities, and expect to be still within the bounds of credulity. This is a bad rehash of the first and was probabaly filmed to cash in on the "cult" popularity of the first that generated over time. Still, it was fun to see the aging Marvin, Borgnine and Jaeckel reprise their parts. It's a good thing Bronson had the good sense not to indulge in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Script
I thought that this movie had a very interesting script. Some parts could have used a little more work but overall I recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Action-packed!!!
"The Taking of Beverly Hills" is an action-packed thrill ride of a movie! I know, because the very first time I saw it, it was sooooooo good that I just had to watch it again. And each time I watch "Beverly Hills", it gets better and better throughout. I had to give credit to Ken Wahl on the lead performance as a quarterback football player. To me, whenever I see this movie, it kind of asks me this question..."How can one man go through an entire night of running from the bad guys that are robbing the city of Beverly Hills as if this is some kind of real life-or-death football game all of a sudden?" Well, I don't have the answer to that one just yet. But anyway, to anyone on this website, DO NOT MISS THIS FILM!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Do not take this movie seriously.
This is the story of a fake toxic spill, which is created to allow for all of Beverly Hills to be looted. Ken Wahl is the quarterback hero of this film and of of course he has his comedic sidekick to help him. The film has some good action film attributes to it, but like "Last Action Hero" it can not be taken seriously. If you like "Remo Williams" or "Buckaroo Bonzai" give this movie a chance. It might just surprise you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The original Boys from the Bronx........
"The Wanderers" is a class act and a stylish movie that has a brassy toughness to it that is both infectious and moving. It was probably overshadowed on it's release by the other gang movie of 1979 "The Warriors", but "The Wanderers" easily holds an equal footing as an excellent period piece of working class lives in 1963. The film centres around the lives of a gang of young boys in the Bronx in mid 1963 coming to terms with friendships, school, girls and other gangs. Ken Wahl ( a promising actor who for some reason never quite made it to the big time !! ) plays a great lead as the smooth talking and charismatic, Richie, the leader of the Wanderers. Richie is struggling to maintain his gangs strength and position in the local neighbourhood as well as juggling his many relationships with different girlfriends. He meets a young and attractive Karen Allen whilst out on the streets with his buddies, and from there another relationship develops. Allen plays her role with style, and even though Allen is not a great beauty, she has that unmistakable feminine charm, especially when that wonderful smile lights up her face.

What makes the movie all the more interesting is the way it goes behind the scenes into the home lives and the hopes, fears and dreams of some of the gang members. We see Joey's artistic talents put down by his fearsome, aggressive father...we see Turkey struggle with his own identity within the different gangs...and we see Richie forced to take responsibility for his actions near the film's conclusion. Backing the movie up, is a dynamite soundtrack containing some top numbers including "Stand by Me", "Runaraound Sue", "Soldier Boy" & of course "The Wanderer" !!

A movie that has charm & talent, and stands up to repeated viewings with ease...if you haven't seen it already....catch up with "The Wanderers" soon !!

4-0 out of 5 stars LEAVE THE KID ALONE....and let him watch this movie!
These were the OLDEST''TEENAGERS''since the Sweathogs!I mean, not one looked at least 18.That said, this is a wanderfull movie. The music, the acting, the chemistry, the atmosphere, everything worked.it had drama, comedy, horror(enter Ducky's Boys),action, and a love story(even though Terror's a lil too old for her!)The plot is basic gang rivalry set in the age of the do wop.We are introduced to the core members of a local gang, the Wanderers. Not a drug dealing, neighborhood wrecking gang. But the loveable, wiseguys you find bowling and hanging out.Tension mounts between rival gang the Del Bombers and the battle is set.Calmer heads prevail and the fight turns into a football game, which turns into a bonding inspired fight. There are subplots;1 Wanderer stealing anothers girlfriend,1 Wanderer becoming a traitor, the home lives of 2 Wanderers,to keep the pacing just right.I am glad to see this on DVD.Too bad theres no extras.Anyway, theres no question youll enjoy this movie, but would you ever mess with the Wongs?

4-0 out of 5 stars a era we all wanted to live
I seen this movie at the theatre when it was released,
because it starred a guy i went to high school with
ken wahl.

this historical aspect on what gang life may have been like
in 1963, sorta a serious west side storey.

i also boight the soundtrack album and now have it
on cd as well.

good movie for a saturday afternoon

4-0 out of 5 stars A VERY ENJOYABLE FILM.
"The Wanderers" is the kind of movie that you don't expect a lot from it before you watch it, but after the movie is over, you feel that seeing this film was the right choice, because it's incredibly amusing. In fact, "The Wanderers" is one of the few films that can make that the audience cares and feels interested for the life of the teenagers portrayed in the movie, "The Warriors", "West Side Story" and "American Graffiti" are some films that have that quality too.

All the characters in "The Wanderers" are very human and believable, some performances are slightly better than others, but overall all the cast is uniformly well in their roles. Definitely "The Wanderers" is a very recommendable movie, the characters, the situations and the script (based in a Richard Price's book) are very good. This is an enjoyable movie from beginning to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars THOSE GUYS LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF PRICKS WITH EARS
this has got to be one of the greatest gang movies ever made along with The Warriors. the best part of the movie is the big fight at the end in the football field. Joey's dad was kickin some major A** ! I like how all the gangs got together in the end to help each other out. Goes to show that in the end besides our differences, were all just a bunch of squirrels trying to get a nut. the soundtrack for this movie is off the hook too ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A silly comedy that shines - thanks to its stars
Let me start by suggesting that you buy, not rent, this movie, because you might well find it too silly at first, then you'll surprise yourself with the urge to watch it over and over again. Yes, with a plot that's nothing better than a good episode of "Three's Company", the cast and crew deserved all the credits to make "The Favor" one of the most entertaining comedies reflecting various facets of love and marriage. Except for Elizabeth McGovern (who shines in almost every role given to her, especially in "Men & Women, Stories of Seduction"), other actors seemed to deliver their best performances here: Harley Jane Kozak, Bill Pullman, Larry Miller, the Orti sisters... I give this film 5 stars, one of which goes to the screenplay that's full of hilarious one-liners, so wisely interwoven with simple but thought provoking dialogues (the conversation between Bill Pullman, Harley Jane Kozak and Leigh Ann Orti in the "kitchen scene" being my favorite one).

4-0 out of 5 stars Family Pleaser
This movie was "adorable". After seeing this movie and loving it, I had to take it to the rest of my family and watch thier reactions. It's a keeper. The plot is yes, a little corny and yes, a little silly. But, the cast was well positioned in thier characters. The thing that most amazed me was how sweet the artist character in this film was. Previous to my awareness of Brad Pitt, I thought he was wonderful. And after I realized it was him I had seen in this movie...I had to see it again and yes....again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Romantic Comedy
I found this movie to be one of the best romantic comedies of all time. It has an outrageously funny storyline coupled with fine performances by sexy Bill Pullman and sultry Elizabeth McGovern. A must see for any Pullman fans! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars sophomore film indeed not a jinx
i am not exactly sure why this film didn't do well but i rather found it entertaining and actually better than many of the films ms.midler would do later on. let's just say upfront the musical numbers here would not go down as anything special but that alone shouldn't have kept the film from being sucessful. the film features the diving miss m doing exactly what she is best at and that is making us all laugh. you will hoot, you might howl, and it's assured you will be charmed by her magnetic performance here which shows she was able to more than pull her weight in this film. whether or not you believe ken wahl's performance or even mr. torn, you will love ms.midler and with good reason too. for those of us who believe ms.midler was best when she was less vulgar and a bit more subtle but nonetheless a jewel to behold, this is the film for you. in this cute but somewhat black comedy, we find ms. midler playing a lounge singer traveling from town to town with her abusive hubby played by mr.torn is a part which i thought he pulled off rather well. not to mention ms.midler's black cat which i thought was absolutely adorable. we find mr. torn following a blackjack dealer from town to town as he has somehow managed to jinx the youngman. as fate would have it, the blackjack dealer and bette meet, fall in love, and devise plans to get mr. torn out of the big picture so to speak. the end results are often witty, clever, and always unpredictable. for a surprising and entertaining early bette vehicle, this one was not nearly as bad as the reviews have clearly suggested. give it a chance folks !!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Bette Midler is hilarious!
This movie was terrible, and so was Ken Wahl. But every time Bette opened her mouth, I couldn't control myself. I loved it when the tumbleweed hit her, and the way she said "I love you, pumpkin" to her cat. Her and Miss Nina should have their own movie! She really did save this truly awful movie, and because of her I am able to laugh through most of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bette saves the movie!
I think that Bette should have gotten better reviews and better publicity on this movie! The movie itself is flat but Bette saved it!

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie was a jinx!
Bette tried hard for this movie, and even though I am her biggest fan, I have to say this movie was bottom of the list. I did'nt see a plot, or even point in it. Same with Scenes From A Mall. We all know she can do better than that.

3-0 out of 5 stars BETTE JINXED!
In this film, the full-legth motion picture follw up to THE ROSE, Bette is less serious than THE ROSE and not as funny as her follow-up DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS. There was more drama behind the scenes to this movie than the movie itself. Based on the movie DOUBLE INDEMNITY with Barbra Stanwick, a story of how a woman tries to kill her husband, collect the money and run off with her new love. Bette adds a little humour to the role. The highlight, of course, is the shower scene with her dead husband and black humour. If you're a Midler fan, it would be interesting to see her in this film in her early comic stages. But don't expect the comic genious in the string of hits to follow:DOWN AND OUT..., RUTHLESS PEOPLE and OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Obscure Classic
This is a classic film that hardly anyone that I know have ever heard of. This is a shame since this is a movie that has hardly any of the cliches that clog up so many police dramas. Paul Newman stars as a cop who tries to enforce the law without engaging in violence against suspects. This sets him at odds with other officers including the new precinct captain played by Ed Asner. This is the heart of the movie and it leads to a surprising conclusion.

A script, acting and directing job that adds up to on excellent movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little hokey, but a solid film with great performances
Good cop films are really important, and this is an excellent portrayal of the human side of law enforcement. What a find. It's a very convincing, gritty New York drama, something that is always appreciated. One of the film's strengths is its ability to shift from comedic moments into harsh tragedies, and in this sense feels like an accurate reflection on real life. Newman is absolutely convincing in his top rate performance, as is the rest of the cast. Which brings us to the plot - it's solid, but not dazzling. You have a sense it is trying to be a tour-de-force about police mentality and corruption but falls a bit short. But, for the rest of the film's strengths, this can be overlooked. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT SO WISE GUY
Before taking on the role of the wiseguy in the acclaimed CBS series, Ken Wahl was making fluff movies like this 1987 corker. It is mildly entertaining, as it invokes memories of the cop series of the 70s and 80s. Wahl plays a journalist whose daughter is kidnapped by a terrorist group. He is joined by veteran character actor George DiCenzo in trying to get his daughter back. Doug McClure (Trampas on THE VIRGINIAN) plays a clueless cop on a diet, addicted to licorice sticks and spouting out bad euphemisms. There's not a lot of action in this movie, and what little there is, seems awkward and uninspired. The soundtrack itself sounds like a Tommy Mottola 70s record. Unoffensive if you're into this kind of thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars OH PLEASE PUT IT ON DVD.
I SAW THIS MOVIE WHEN I WAS 13-14 YEARS OLD, WHAT A BLAST IT WAS THEN AND WHAT FUN IT WOULD BE TO RETURN TO ON WIDESCREEN DVD. ANYONE WHO LIKED ACTION/SPY-GENRE FLICKS WILL LOVE "THE SOLDIER".
YEAH ITS GOT A CHEESY MOMENT OR TWO ,AND THE ACTING ISNT GONNA WIN ANY AWARDS, BUT...WHO CARES?? THIS MOVIE HAS SOME GREAT SCENES THAT ONCE WATCHED YOU WILL NOT FORGET.
THE BAD KGB AGENT BLOWING AWAY THE SHARIFFS DEPUTY WITH A DOUBLE BARRELED SHOTGUN RIGGED UNDER HIS TRENCHCOAT SLEEVE.
THE DIR. OF THE CIA BEING WHACKED BY AN EXPLODING LIGHTBULB, THAT WE GET TO VOYEURISTICALLY WATCH BEING BUILT AND RIGGED.
AND IT HAS ONE OF THE COOLEST OPENING CREDIT SEQUENCES AND OPENING SCENES OF ITS TIME.
THE MUSIC IS GOOD AND VERY ERA ORIENTED AS DONE BY TANGERINE DREAM.YEAH ITS JUST SCREAMIN 80'S.
THE VHS EDITION (LIKE ALL VHS EDITIONS) IS LOW GRADE QUALITY AND FULL SCREEN [is bad]. HOPEFULLY A NICE DVD TRANSFER WILL BE IN THE MAKING. IF NOTHING ELSE RENT THIS FILM ON VHS, AND HAVE A GREAT ROMP IN THE HEADY DAYS OF THE COLD WAR.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can someone help me with this movie?
Since there is no review on this movie, I'm not sure if it is the one that I am searching for. I am hoping that someone will respond to this review and tell me if this is the movie where they process dead people for food?
