The dreamy voice doesn't seem to fit the scrawny young fellow singing-- but this was precisely the early appeal of the young Frank Sinatra. He, and TheVoice, are on agreeable display in this low-key MGM musical, with Frankie castas an ex-GI ecstatic at returning to the greatest place on earth. Where else butBrooklyn? The 1947 movie is on nobody's short list of great MGM efforts, and itfeels cobbled together from different projects. Sometimes it's a Jimmy Durantecomedy, sometimes it's a showcase for snub-nosed Kathryn Grayson's coloratura(she does bits of Lakmé and Don Giovanni), and toward the end itbecomes a fundraiser for a local boy who wants to be a pianist--a bizarredistraction from the romantic triangle of Sinatra, Grayson, and Peter Lawford(whose talent resides in Durante's comment, "He has a very fine command of theEnglish language"). Best tune: Ol' Blue Eyes crooning the lovely "Time AfterTime." --Robert Horton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great film!
This film is great and a must see. Great for all Katheryn Grayson fans It's romantic funny and enjoyable to see each time. I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sinatra Sings Mozart?
Indeed he does (La ci darem la mano from Don Giovanni) with Kathryn Grayson, and quite gracefully too. This unique duet is worth the price of admission, but in addition you get loveable Jimmy Durante, an icon of vaudeville and early television (where ARE those shows?), and charming Peter Lawford, Kennedy in-law and Rat Packer-to-be! The plot is indeed forgettable, but the highlights make it worthwhile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bronx cheer for "Brooklyn"
This is a movie whose time has past. Unlike its contemporary "This Time for Keeps" (also starring Jimmy Durante) this one is stale. It's a relic from the post-WW II years with a script as pedestrian as they get. If you want to see the best this movie has to offer, see "That's Entertainment." The clip there of Durante and Sinatra is all this tired black and white musical has to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie to see and hear
This is one of my all-time favorite movie musicals, believe it or not. It has a very nice story, is well-written, and seems the perfect movie. It's not a paper-thin plotline as seen in many other musicals, nor is it overly bombastic with huge production numbers and the like. It's right in the middle, a fairly normal film, but that is what makes it most appealing. And sadly, it is no longer available on video, so you have to try your luck finding it on TCM. As with any Burns & Allen vehicle, this film has its comedic moments, especially for Burns. An often overlooked aspect of this film is the original music that was written for it, mostly by songsters Harry Warren and Gus Kahn; incidentally, this was Warren & Kahn's only film project together. Eleanor Powell does a roller skate dance around a ship's pool as Gracie sings the rather banal title tune. At a costume party, a singer dressed as (I think) Bing Crosby croons the (greatly under-rated) dreamy love ballad, "This Night (Will Be My Souvenir)," while Gracie and the Kings' Men cut up with the very humorous "The Leader Doesn't Like Music." Needless to say, Gracie is Mae West and the Kings' Men are none other than the Marx Brothers, with TWO Groucho's. There are other stock numbers, mostly for a Hawaiian medley later in the film. The story of the film is of course the mistaken-identity one, but I will leave the details for when you hopefully watch this great and unduly forgotten film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dancing
Eleanor Powell performs a fabulous jazz and tap dance to Hawaiian music. I have watched this video over and over and am in awe of her talent. Another plus is seeing Gracie Allen tap dance and sing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Early George Burns Film!!
This was the last movie(1939) starring George Burns until he made the Sunshine Boys (1975).Also,co-starring Gracie Allen is a film concerning mistaken identities in Hawaii. It's a superb musical comedy classic!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good historical value
There is a lot of history here for pete lovers. Very interesting. Certain scenes are probably not suitable for children, but give us an idea of things in days gone by. Contains 4 shorts. Dog heaven, included with these, is a short filmed from Pete's perspective.

1-0 out of 5 stars sick
if this is the video where they hang another dog, it was disgusting and i took the video back to the store and got my refund.i was glad that i looked at it before my grandchildren seen it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of historical interest to American Pit Bull Terrier fanciers
This video showcases one of the best-loved animal actors, Pete the Pup, a registered American Pit Bull Terrier. There were actually several Petes and this video shows at least two of them. Awesome acting and tricks from the dogs as well as the dogs' own personalities shining through. Pete is always loyal, even when being traded for a doll and deserted for a girl (grrrr). This is the true American Pit Bull Terrier. I have to add that this is not a kid's video, as the treatment some of the kids receive will make you cringe. ... Read more
