5-0 out of 5 stars Sentimental favorite...
Sure, this movie may be a bit on the predictable side, and the whole cryo-stasis thing might be a bit hard to swallow, but once you're able to get to the suspension of belief, what's left is a sweet, sentimental movie that's perfect for you and your special someone to cuddle up to as you watch.

Brian Wimmer and Peter Berg turn in terrific performances as brothers-in-law on-the-run from the authorities because of a crime they didn't commit. Wimmer comes across as being just as honest, caring and sincere as he needs to, which is considerable, since his character and performance depend on it. Berg, playing a somewhat-dimwitted man with a heart of gold is perfect, as he's often been in his minor, but memorable performances. The rest of the cast is more than competent, but the success of this movie depends on its two leads, and they come through with flying colors. You can't help but pull for these guys. One of the first thing a film-maker wants to do is get the audience interested and caring about the main characters, and trust me, you will be...

Funny and sweet, this is the perfect movie for a quiet night alone with your honey. If you consider yourself at all a romantic (love conquers all...and the like), you'll love this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic and fun
I so loved this movie. Though slightly predictable--the son of the bad guy turning out to be who he was...
His daughter growing up like she did...
The wife reacting like she did...
But it's ok, the script was wonderful and the actors pulled off the predictable scenes. I so enjoyed the backdrop storyline. I think it gave the movie a good place to end without just dropping off at the HONEY I'M HOME part. I think the daughter's reactions were good when the Peter Burg and Brian Wimmer showed back up. (disbelief and anger)
Yes, I cried during the credits, those were the best, having the photographs emeshed within. Having the young Peter Burg, still in love with his wife after...what to her was ALL this time.
The title Late For Dinner says it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars romanticly funny
this movie is a funny, yet romantic movie about losing the one you love, and then finding it all over again and finding out your love stood strong throughout all that time of being apart... it's great!!

5-0 out of 5 stars For "Somewhere in Time" fans
Just a short review. "Somewhere in Time" is one of my all-time favorite movies, and so is "Late for Dinner." Another terrific time travel romance. I encourage all SIT fans to sample this little gem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty boring
This was a pretty slow-moving film for my taste. I thought they really glossed over the troubles that would be inevitable with this kind of situation. This premise- a loved one coming back from the dead- was done MUCH better in "Always" and also in "Truly, Madly, Deeply". This seemed like just kind of a dumb movie, and could have been done so much better. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Long Time Fan
I'm a long time fan of the Beach Boys having spent my life since the age of ten listening to their music and having read Heros and Villians by Steven Gaines. The book goes into much more detail but the movie hits some of the high points.
I especially liked the portrayal of Dennis and Brian and Murray.
It's worth your time to see it.

3-0 out of 5 stars "The Beach Boys: An American Family" is a lot better
I feel that this movie was not as good as "An American Family". Bruce Greenwood, although a good actor and good Dennis Wilson, did not have any resemblence to Dennis, whereas Nick Stabile did. I feel it does the movie better if the actor portraying someone resembles them a little bit, (I understand that may be hard to find but when you do the movie is better(: )It's been a while since i've seen either of these movies but I definately feel "An American Family" is a lot better. This movie is good, too, but if you a Dennis Wilson fan, then i would consider seeing "An American Family" b/c Nick Stabile portrays Dennis really well. Actually, I recommend seeing both so you can compare and decide for yourself. ***FOREWARNING: "An American Family" is really hard to find at a reasonable price***

4-0 out of 5 stars Summer Dreams - It hit me Like a rock...
I can't let our "11-year old viewer" do all the work on this interesting 'B' TV-movie (good work, kid.. I've seen your other reviews, too.. turn the caps lock off, though.. ok? (--: ) - I didn't know too much in the early 90's (when I first saw this thing) about the life of the early Beach Boys - I had heard that Brian Wilson had 'weirded out' somewhat.. so, this film, with its uncompromising look at the abusive, hard-driving father, Murray, hit me like a rock.. it also showed the troubled personality of a very unhappy Dennis Love and speculated on what might have led to his drowning.. the critics didn't like this presentation too much, and it's overshadowed by THE BEACH BOYS: AN AMERICAN FAMILY now, I suppose.. but, of the two, I still prefer "Summer Dreams." it's shorter, and there's no candy-coated tribute words about Murray at the end either. You will understand what Brian Wilson meant when he sang about needing sanctuary "In My Room". With Wilson's recent beyond-belief performance at the Queen's Party in Britain, let's hope the dude is finally enjoying some peace of mind..

3-0 out of 5 stars Talking Dirty with Deborah
One of the more frustrating aspects of being a Deborah Harry fan is supporting her acting career. Though she's a decent actress and captivating screen presence, too often one has to suffer through 90 minutes of dreck to catch the two or three wonderful moments Deborah is on screen. For every "Videodrome" or "Hairspray" in her filmography, there are twice as many wastes of celluloid like "Drop Dead Rock" or "Forever, Lulu." This made-for-cable thriller isn't a great movie, but it's entertaining solely for Deborah's star turn as a phone sex operator who "witnesses" a murder over the phone. The cops, of course, don't believe her. Street cop James Russo overhears her being laughed out of the police station and decides to do some amateur sleuthing in hopes it'll help him get promoted to detective (like I said, not a great movie). It's pretty much a by-the-numbers, mediocre thriller, with Deborah getting stalked by the killer as she tries to discover his identity. Suspense fans will be disappointed, but Deborah Harry fans will be in heaven as they listen to her talk dirty to strangers in her flat, deadpan voice ("My eyes are blue--blue like the California sky," she breathes in the same tone of voice used to open the Blondie song "X-Offender"). Better still, Deborah's character is also a struggling singer, so she gets to sing a couple songs, the best being a forlorn cover of "Piece of My Heart."

One other group that'll love this movie: smoking fetishists. There's barely a scene Deborah is in where she's not lighting a cigarette--with matches, never a lighter. Even the opening credits begin with an extreme close up of her bringing a match to the tip of a cigarette. I can't watch this movie without wanting a cigarette myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheesey, but fantastic movie!
Here's the good stuff; see a sexy Deborah Harry chain smoke, talk really, REALLY dirty, and fight a maniac! Now, seriously, this is one great little movie you got here. If I'm correct, this was a made for TV movie, which would help to explain the look to it. The acting is very good at points, but then seems to fade at others. The maniac, for example, sounds incredibly scary over the phone, but when you see him face to face with heroin Deb, he doesn't seem to be that great. Just a small example. The plot is a little bit thin, but what can you say? It's a cat-and-mouse style movie, which usually doesn't includee much of a plot. The plot, however, doesn't seem to matter here, because the style of it all is great. It has a very eary look and feel to it, and the soundtrack is great (especially the Debbie songs!). So, yes, it may not be the best movie ever made, but it still deserves 5 stars for its creativity and the great sense of horror about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars COOL PERFORMANCE
FOR BLONDIE FANS, ASIDE FROM THE PLOT WICH IS COVERED BY OTHER REVIEWS, IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE SHE PERFORMS ONSTAGE WITH AN UNKNOWN BAND IN A SMOKEY DIVE IN GOTHAM CITY & HER VOICE'S GOLDEN ESSENCE IS STARTLINGLY CAPTURED. IF FOR NO OTHER REASON, THESE PERFORMANCES ARE WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION, NOT ON ANY LP'S MIGHT I ADD!

3-0 out of 5 stars GRITTY, GRIM AND GRIMY THRILLER
I FOUND THIS MOVIE HARD TO WATCH AT TIMES BECAUSE OF THE SLIGHTLY CLAUSTROPHOBIC ATMOSPHERE THE FILM HAS. EVEN THE CAST (WHO ARE ALL GOOD ACTORS) SEEM SLIGHTLY UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE SCRIPT, MAYBE THATS WHAT THE DIRECTOR HAD IN MIND. WHAT'S OBVIOUSLY INTENTIONAL IS THAT DEBORAH HARRY HAS BEEN MADE TO LOOK AS BAD AS POSSIBLE IN JUST ABOUT EVERY SCENE SHE'S IN (AND SHE'S IN JUST ABOUT ALL OF THEM). SHE OBVIOUSLY DOSENT MIND SHEDING THE GLAMOUR GIRL IMAGE FOR FILMS. THIS MOVIE WOULD PROBABLY MAKE AN O.K RENTAL FOR GROWN-UPS

4-0 out of 5 stars Harry gives a Brilliant performance
Deborah Harry , who has appeared in almost 20 films ,all of which were supporting or cameo, finally gets a starring role playing a chain smoking phone sex call girl and struggling rock singer in this cat and mouse thriller. Harry gives a brilliant performance as Corey Wheeler being chased by a killer. The soudtrack is super eerie and Debbie also sings a couple Janis Joplin covers in nightclubs scenes. Top notch ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Baja Oklahoma - Wonderful movie
I first saw this movie several years ago and fell in love with it. Leslie Ann Warren and Peter Coyote are wonderful! I was happy to see that I could get my own copy. The ending will have you cheering, laughing and crying all at once. It is a real FEEL GOOD MOVIE! I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Julia's in this one
Good movie starring Lesley Ann Warren as a bartender who wants to be a country songwriter. Originally made as a HBO movie. Julia Roberts plays Warren's daughter in her second movie appearance. (Her first role was in Blood Red with her brother Eric.) A must have for any Julia fan!!

5-0 out of 5 stars VHS edits out important scene
I first saw this movie on HBO without the editing on the VHS version. The first date with old boyfriend (Peter Coyote)where Juanita tells why she loves Texas was the reason she wrote her song to Texas to begin with. Without that scene, it takes the heart out of the movie. Please remake this on DVD without this killer editing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Country Charmer Penned by Dan Jenkins...
Baja Oklahoma is a wonderful HBO Original Film that is remembered primarily as an early Julia Roberts vehicle, but deserves much more than that! Written by 'Semi-Tough' scribe Dan Jenkins, the film crackles with great one-liners, inspired casting, and a 'Cinderella' storyline that's hard to beat.

Lesley Ann Warren (who's never been feistier or more beautiful) is Juanita, a good-hearted Texas woman with a string of bad relationships, an 18-year old daughter (Roberts) running off to Aspen with a dope-pushing boyfriend, a dead-end job waitressing at a bar, and dreams of being a songwriter. Her best friend/fellow waitress, Doris (the fabulous Swoozie Kurtz) cheats on her husband regularly, depending on her to back up her alibis; her patrons (including singer Billy Vera and the terrific William Forsythe) are an undependable but very likable collection of oddballs.

When Juanita's high school flame (Peter Coyote) returns to town for his father's funeral, her life begins to turn around. Both have been burned but still remain optimistic, and he believes in her talent. All she needs is some good advice (provided by Vera), a little management (offered by local deejay Anthony Zerbe, who's a hoot), some inspiration (from Coyote, of course!), and a little luck, and her dreams just might come true!

Filled with classic country tunes, appearances by Emmylou Harris, John Mayall, and Willie Nelson, and a terrific title tune by Jenkins and Nelson, this is a 'feel-good' movie that may just bring a tear to your eye by the finale. It's that good!

So if you purchase this simply to see Julia Roberts, prepare to be enchanted by another 'Pretty Woman'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Interesting Plots
Juanita is a single mother afraid to give love a second chance with her former high school sweetheart. Her dreams are overshadowed by a past she's not too proud of. While she's chasing her career as a song writer she's also butting heads with her headstrong daughter, Julia Roberts. This movie reminded me of Thelma and Louise and I couldn't help but fall in love with it. It's a great little treasure. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution: This was recorded in EP mode!
I just bought this tape and found that all 57 or so minutes of it are crammed onto a few feet of tape because it was duplicated in EP mode instead of SP. (We all know that most movies come in SP mode.) The quality suffers a lot.

The video cassette in this case is mostly empty space. I really don't get it. Why ruin such a fun cartoon this way? Does that extra video tape really cost so much? Why why?

5-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
This wild cartoon is great for younger viewers. The animation is very good and each character well drawn. An original and entertaining show, it's basically about the monsters themselves and the secret world that they live in underground and in the sewers. Their jobs in life are to scare happless humans. The focus of the show itself is on three monsters in particular; Oblina, Ickes, and Krum. Each of the characters have a unique personality and are quite likeable (but not obnoxiously cute). With Tim Currey as the voice of the Grumble (the teacher at the monster's Scare Academy), and various other celebrity voices, Real Monsters is a real treat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY NICE TRUE STORY
Based on a true story Cliff (Christian Slater, True Romance) is a small town social outcase whose infatuation with Lilly Becker his childhood friend and neighbor becomes more than an obsession.

2-0 out of 5 stars Desperate For Love--Desperate For Some Excitement
This video is based loosely on a true story of young love and obsession gone horribly wrong and ending in murder. The subject matter involves a young lady (Tammy Lauren) "desperately" trying to win the affections of a young man who is only mildly interested in her, and the consequences of her using his best friend (Christian Slater) to attract his attention. Christian Slater's character has been in love with the young lady for sometime, and the misplaced affection he receives brings the situation to a horrible end. This film had a lot of conversational drama and very little action. Fans of Tammy Lauren and Christian Slater are probably going to want to own this film out of a since of completism, because both young people have considerable camera time. As a huge fan of Tammy Lauren myself, it pains me to see her talents wasted in this movie, but her ability to come off as real and true to the character she plays still stands out in the performance. ...
