5-0 out of 5 stars ROMERO

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Story of Conversion to the Poor
Oscar Romero, Archbishop of El Salvador, had the courage to live the teaching of Jesus, even though this meant alienating the rich and powerful who oppressed, tortured, murdered, and defrauded the poor of that nation. He stood in the pulpit of the national cathedral and urged soldiers to obey their Lord and disobey commands of oppression. He paid for this, taking a bullet to the heart while blessing the wine during mass.

This movie portrays the story of a quiet, bookish man who stood in the gap between the machine of dehumanizing globalization and the children of Jesus. We watch him wrestle with discovering an authentic Christian response to the injustices and oppression prevalent in El Salvador. We see him reprimand all those who would practice violence, whether as military authority, rebels, or institutionalized violence that robs people of their humanity and ability to feed their families.

The movie was filmed in Mexico, not Hollywood. Raul Julia deserved an Oscar for his performance as Romero. Mexican extras bring a feeling of authenticity that could not have been realized in Hollywood. The telling manages to avoid most of the "splatter" depictions of violence that most box office draws include, and by so doing, makes the violence even more heinous.

This is a powerful story, whether you are Christian or Pagan, Marxist or Capitalist. It is superbly told. This is the story of a person finding his authentic place in the midst of a struggle for justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ROAD IS NARROW, AND DOWN THE MIDDLE
The most unlikely of heroes, Romero, with owlish glasses and demeanor, is reluctantly thrust into a role much like Thomas More almost five centuries earlier.

20th century El Salvador, like 16th century England, is enduring bloodshed and havoc. Insurgent Communist rebels compete with paramilitary squads and the oligarchy for control of the tiny Central American nation. Priests and the flock they lead are caught in the middle. Those who cry for justice are photographed and marked for extinction because they speak the language of Marxism.

Archbishop Romero recognizes that Marxists and the ruling oligarchy are merely obverse sides of the same coin-- ideologies who rule by force contrary to the the rule of God.

He is equally harsh with Communist sympathizers as he is with the paramilitary squads who rape, torture and execute advocates of justice and human rights.

Like a nail driven into wood, Romero meets each new situation, bewildered at first, but rising to the occasion with increasing faith, anger and determination.

In one scene, he arrives at a church which has been turned into an army barracks. He announces that he has come to remove the Blessed Sacrament. A belligerent soldier responds by unloading a round of bullets into the tabernacle and shatters the crucifix hanging above the altar. Romero stands transfixed, astonished at the utter desecration, then leaves. He pauses outside where a crowd has gathered, unsure as he himself is what he will do next.

Suddenly, collecting the courage to face the evil that expelled him, he wheels around. He brushes past the insolent soldier and stoops to gather the consecrated wafers in trembling hands. The soldier fires another round above Romero's head. Undeterred by the gunfire, the intimidation, and the soldier who shoves Romero with his boot, he completes his work then exits.

But he isn't finished. He returns yet again to restore the church to its rightful owner--the people of God. The soldiers in their turn stare blandly at the audacity of this meek soldier of God who dares to stand up to their jackbooted authority and in his turn expel evil.

Archbishop Romero fights every battle his Redeemer once fought: the apathy of the elite, the treachery of those in power, and betrayal within his own ranks. One of his own priests reveals that he carries a weapon. Romero angrily and loudly denounces him because "You lose God just as the others have!" Another parishioner denounces Romero for betraying their class by "forcing" her baby to be baptized along with "all those indians."

This video should stand next to A Man For All Seasons. Raul Julia, like Paul Scofield, has memorably portrayed one of the Church's most celebrated martyrs. Julia carries a heavy load, but the entire cast contributes

4-0 out of 5 stars A hero's tale.
In a country that was troubled by injustice and murders, the ruling elite gave Romero a powerful job as an archbishop. The reason why he was given this job, was that they believed that Romero would stick by the rules, and never fight against the cruelty and the injustice that the people of El Salvador had to endure.

How wrong they were! In this film we are allowed to witness how Romero gets more and more involved in the fight for justice and freedom for all citizens. In the end he has to pay with his life, as he is being murdered in front of the altar during a church service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, well acted, and well worth watching!
Archbishop Oscar Romero is one of my personal heros, for the faith and courage he showed in standing up when he saw people being oppressed and speaking against those attrocities.

Raul Julia is an excellent actor and he captures this role beautifully, it is an inspiring story of going from a milquetoast bishop to a fighter for the people.

Well worth it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good movie
Farrah Fawcett and James Russo are outstanding for the characters they portray. The movie description: James Russo is a serial rapist and Farrah Fawcett plays the victim who manages to escape her would be (masked) rapist in the beggining of the movie. However, he still has her purse carrying her personal information and address. Marjorie goes to the police to report her attempted rape and the police inform her "it would be hard to press charges on an unknown assailant" Basically James Russo returns a week or so later back into Marjorie's life at her home to finish what he started. (now he is unmasked, and enters her home). The scenes are brutal: however if you manage to stomach Farrah Fawcett being attacked mentally, and physically you will then witness how she manages to turn the tables on her would be rapist. After the tables are turned though the movie starts to slow down and We wonder what will be the outcome? What will she do with her would be rapist.. Turn him over to the police who he says will let him go since she (yet again) has no proof of sexual assault? Or burry him alive in the back yard? I reccomend this film, but definitely not for children!! Also, the co-stars in this movie make the most of their small roles!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Despite Extensive Editing
The crux of this film, the episode wherein the rape victim (Farrah Fawcett) turns the tables on her assailant and imprisons/abuses him, was actually a fictional extension of a real-life occurrence involving the attorney general of a small southern state. The real-life occurrence was portrayed herein conceptually, altering the true circumstances (campaign meeting, encounter in hotel room) but preserving the brutality. Several scenes were cut, the fear being that the presentation would simply be too repulsive for viewers to stomach. One of these was the scene where, immediately after assault, the victim emerges with a bloody lip from where the attacker butted her with his head -- and the man coldly said to her, "You better get some ice on that." It was feared that viewers would be too sickened, seeing such a thing, though as it turns out (per a national survey conducted November 2000) that about half the folks in the nation have no problem whatever with that sort of behavior.

The film's ending pretty much reflects the same outcome as the real-life episode, and one can only imagine the poor victim's feelings about that. The real message is that any man who would do this sort of thing is vile, evil and horrible, and fully deserves to be locked away for the rest of his life -- even though that simply doesn't happen often enough. Rapists continually thumb their noses at the system, in effect saying to all of us, "You better get some ice on that."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
I like this movie, the acting is great she (Farrah Fawcitt) is great at making her voice tremble when she's scared and so on. When I saw the half ending on tv recently, I didn't know the name of this movie, so when the credits came on, I remembered the name Farrah Fawcitt. (I only heard of her once before but didn't know what she looked like or who she was before this movie). So I came onto amazon.com and typed in her name and was able to find this movie by reading the reviews. A few weeks later, I saw the movie on tv again but more of the beginning as well. I think it's funny how once the tables are turned and she's in control, how she was prodding him with the fireplace's metal rod that is used for pushing hot logs . He didn't like that too much. I'm going to buy it online here because I want to see the first 15 minutes that I missed, and this movie is a really good movie from what I saw already. I also hope to see other movies that Farrah Fawcitt does because she is talented with her acting and probably has done some other great movies as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars Farrah Fawcett at her best
When Playboy's video "Farrah Fawcett - All of Me" was released in 1997, a reviewer wrote, "if your interest is to see her in the nude, it's better just to get yourself a rated R movie". Another reviewer wrote, "she's much sexier in anything other than this video." Both were right. "Extremities" was an R-rated movie, and Farrah, while not in the buff, was sexy as hell (she was thirty-nine when it was filmed, while "All of Me" marked her fiftieth birthday). Better yet, her strong and believable performance made "Extremities" a surprisingly good thriller. With this movie, she really put the Charlie's Angels era behind her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
I saw the movie when it aired on the Superstation about 3 years ago and to this day I have been searching for it. I must admit at the time I saw it I was only 13 years old but it helped me understand womens issues. Its good that women can take control of a situation which initially they had no control over. Graphic but excellent film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Cult Film!!!
Repo Man is THE classic cult movie. It's a real original! A wacky and complex masterpiece that defies description. Emilio Estevez, in his one and only good role, is the title character, a teenage punk who lives with his hippie parents in L.A. The always brilliant Harry Dean Stanton is the veteran repo man who takes Estevez under his wing and shows him the ropes of the trade. To reveal more would be wrong, one of the many pleasures of this movie is the wild surprises and twists that the film springs on us. Let's just say the film mixes a punk attitude with bizarro science fiction, hysterical comedy, satire, a GREAT soundtrack and much more. With this film and the brilliant Sid & Nancy (another film you should see if you have'nt)Alex Cox announced himself as a great director. Unfortunately, he seemed to want to self destruct a promising career with the release of two deeply flawed but nonetheless interesting films Walker and Straight to Hell. This is a man who needs to direct again? Where is he now??

5-0 out of 5 stars Cult classic
Of all the low-budget films to come out of the Eighties, Repo Man, Alex Cox's dark cult comedy about Eighties urban sprawl and alien paranoia, is one of the better ones. Emilio Estevez stars in one of his earliest roles as Otto Parts, your modern apocalyptic teen up to his armpits in drugs, sex, and parental neglect. He soon finds a way out through Bud (Stanton), an ace repo man, who gives him a job and teaches him the ways of the car repossessing trade. The two wander through the guts of L.A. in search of a '64 Chevy Malibu, priced at 50 thousand dollars, and run into a cast of bizarre street characters: feds, girls in distress, a lobotomized nuclear physicist, and really, really dumb criminals. Estevez gives one of the best performances of his career, honing his acting skills as a punk white boy just in time for his role in Coppola's The Outsiders, released later that year. Cox, who wrote and directed the film, creates a strange but hilarious view of our culture, a brilliant satire on modern society.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the f*ck do I know?
One thing I do know is this film is a modern day masterpiece.Unlike anything made before it.A true work of art and absolutely essential to any great DVD collection.Better than Gone With The Wind.It will make you wanna go to L.A. but stay home and watch Repo Man instead.I really wish they'd release the made for TV version of it as well.Along with the high art of Richard Elfman's brilliant Forbidden Zone, Repo Man is in a class all by itself.SUPERB!

4-0 out of 5 stars not what i had expected
I was thouroughly pleased upon seeing repo man. Though i Admit it was defintitletely not what I had expected. A friend recomended the movie to me saying it was apunk rock thing, and it was actually an acurate portrayal of the punk rock lifestyle of the 80's. WHOA no way, thats the last time i trust that guy. What I did discover was a magical glowing, flying spacecar, which everyone and their mother wanted. It's brilliant, just half way through the movie it takes a twist for the strange. I'd recomend this movie to anyone. This is probably Emelio's only good performance ever so that makes the movie that much more special.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The more you drive, the less intelligent you are."--Miller
Wow, ummm....interesting. Finally something different. No, I mean this is REALLY different. About time to, cuz lately I've seen a string of bvad movies, so it's nice to see something cool and original every now and then. Otto (Emilio Estevez) is a Los Angeles punk, a loser with no direction and no role models. But he discovers a code of honor and higher purpose when he joins a select group of latter-day knights: the repo men. As a fledging apprentice, Otto slowly learns the ways of these high-caliber, overmedicated auto repossessors. And when a $20,000 bounty is placed on a mysterious missing car, Otto eludes the police, feds, religious cultists, and other repo men in a frantic search for this holy grail. Could one man's destiny lie in the back of a 1964 Chevy Malibu? For some, actually for many, this film will come of as stupid and random, but for those of us who "get" it, this is a breathe of fresh air. Using clever, if somewhat odd, story telling, this film should keep you entertained and amused throughout the entire duration of the film. I say rent first, then but. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A real, reel KNOCKOUT..so buy it!
Little brother boxer idolizes big brother boxer. But sleazy mob guys brutally bash big brother to death prompting little brother to go Rocky on everyone. In the end its those no-good thugs that deservingly get slammed. Whoa! Good stuff. Personally speaking now, from the opening scene at the gym to the walk to ring with that smashing finale, I could virtually see, hear and smell the actual world of a fighter. I may be crazy, but after that fatal beating the mob gave big brother I ached all over as if I were the poor sap. (Except that I am still thankfully alive of course). And the crunch of ME slamming onto the pavement below the window?...oof! As for all the other punching blows..the sight & sound of high energy fisted leather exploding on MY flesh...well, it's almost too much for me to take. But I keep going back..for more. Viewing that is.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Heart-Pounding Emotional Knockout"
This movie shows the REAL Sides of Boxing...The Dark side of the sport...How much Boxing is more a business then a sport..It also shows the Love of two brothers and they're relationship with they're father..Terrific performance by Gene Hackman...The walk in to the ring is one of the most exciting scenes in movies....I highly Recommend It... ... Amazon.com essential video

A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Hunted-Pointless and Confusing
The Hunted, an inert and bizarre thriller from director William Friedkin who use to direct and appreciate good movies. Tommy Lee Jones and Benecio Del Toro star in this incredibly senseless film, I only gave it three stars for the great action.
The film unfortunate to say is not very suspenseful, it's rather banal and unsurprising.
Basically, Jones, plays a commander of an elite special forces unit which use brutal tactics involving knifes and other such weapons. Toro is a lead student in his class and is commended for his great work. Soon during a secretive mission in Kosovo, he after completeing the missions successfully he loses his mind and essentially goes mad. He targets deer hunters whom he thinks are CIA agents trying to nail him. He's very surreptitious and cautious and so no one can catch me or so he thought. Soon the cat and mouse games becomes an intense deadly and fairly gruesome knife game which could be depicted from many horror films.
Toro is an expert when it comes to being a killing machine. Jones's primary objective is to catch him and of course execute him. An excellent knife fight is staged pretty much at the end of the film between Toro and Jones. All in all, the $6 used for the film ticket would've been better for charity. I mean that film wasn't atrocious, but it wasn't an amazing film. Personally
I think Tommy Lee Jones, is desperate for money, and so is Friedkin and Toro. This film should've immediately come to tape,
but it's a bit late for that. The only thing I can recommend about this film is the enthralling action, but one must have the stomach for the gory and graphic knife fights.
The Hunted is rated R for Strong Bloody Violence (which is indeed true) and Some Language. The violence is excessive but is considerable. I would recommennd only to fans of action and possibly fans who admire stupidity, cause that's all you'll get from this movie. See if you must, you should probably see it right away though.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very well acted & directed action/adventure flick.
Aaron Hallam (Benicio Del Toro), has went off the deep end using his special forces killing techniques to fillet hunters who kill with "irreverence" as some sort of social statement. Now it's up to the man who taught him L.T. Bonham (Tommy Lee Jones), a professional tracker and good ol' boy to bring him in.

The Hunted is simply a fun, sometimes silly non-stop action extravaganza low on story, dialogue, character development, and overall plot and heavy as a sumo wrestler on visceral, fast paced, beautifully choreographed and even more beautifully photographed action sequences.

Staring in Kosovo, in what can only be described as a vision of hell on Earth, we meet Hallam a special forces op/assassin who witness brutal mass murder at the hands of some tyrannical military force. After his mission is carried out Hallam returns to the world and is given the silver star. He then disappears into the woods and begins to carry out his crusade for animal rights, or so we're supposed to believe even though the details are hazy. There's also a moment where Hallam says he was set up, but that's quickly forgotten along with his animal rights stance and we're left to believe that the guy just snapped. Tommy Lee Jones is brought in as is the case in all these movies where only a retired agent/cop/tough guy can bring down this new threat, a threat he helped create. After a brief, very brief, ploy by a shady government official Bonham jumps aboard to help bring in "his boy." From there we're treated to chase after chase, hand to hand combat after knife fight and it's all breathtakingly captured by William Friedkin of The Exorcist fame. A man whose made a name for himself by filming amazing car chase sequences. So who better to call the shots on The Hunted, which is really one amazing chase sequence after another, than Billy himself who pulls everything off...amazingly!

You have to give the guy credit for not going the route seemingly all other action movies go these days when it comes to filming high octane action sequences. I'm talking about endless slow-mo's and irritating Matrix-style visuals. Here Friedkin keeps the action going at a fast pace. The many hand to hand combat sequences between Hallam and Bonham are done with so much realism you I almost found myself grunting and grimacing along with the actors. Bravo. As far as the story is concerned it's all pretty much window dressing, thin window dressing at that. Void of dialogue with all other characters (excluding Jones and Del Toro) there just for show. Although Jones and Del Toro, who are great actors, spend most of the movie running and fighting it still took much skill to play these rolls only relying on physical prowess and the ability to show emotion without speaking. Bravo again. There's an out of place theology lesson at the beginning of the film that's just silly. The story of Abraham and Isaac is employed simply for pretentious purposes I'm sure and carry little weight in the film itself. Hallam looked up to Bonham as a father and at one point Bonham refers to Hallam as "my boy." And of course Bonham is brought in by the government to essentially kill Hallam, but that's as far as the Bible lesson goes.

The Hunted has it's fair share of goof. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times at how silly some things came off as being. Hallam's initial motive for killing hunters was simply ridiculous. Also I have to say that Tommy Lee Jones seems a bit old to be engaging in hand to hand combat with anyone. The final showdown is simply a one sided fight to what was ultimately a predictable finale that for a moment had me believing things were going to shift. Alas they didn't and the end seemed like a cop-out quickie to a vaguely symbolic finale.

After watching The Hunted I came away smiling, superbly entertained, and recounting the numerous goofy moments. I also praised Benicio Del Toro for his great, creepy performance, the break neck action sequences and director Friedkin. But now in retrospect I find much sadness in the story and the characters. It's really about two people neither one good nor evil, but walking that thin red line between the two. The Hunted isn't a great film, but one that resonates in my mind causing a number of emotions. If you're an action buff, The Hunted will surely suffice if you're in the mood for a quick action fix. However, and it sounds weird saying (or rather typing) this, but I think there's much to be discussed about the characters, Hallam in particular. I've found much to empathize with both men and ultimately feel sorrow for them. Check it out!

3-0 out of 5 stars This movie is nothing like The Fugitive
And that is nothing like sarcasm. Okay, it is. It's a lot like sarcasm, actually. Maybe if it weren't Tommy Lee Jones as the star it wouldn't be so obvious, but to me what it came down to was a tough, know-it-all smart guy chasing a resourceful criminal that apparently no one else can catch.

The Hunted seemed to have promise in the previews. Jones of course is usually good in everything (others might say this is because he typically plays the same character). And since starring in The Usual Suspects, Benicio Del Toro can really do no wrong. But The Hunted is a strange film, awkwardly left of center, as though it was aware of it's own triteness so it tries to overcompensate for it in random areas - violence, gore, and casting for example. Watching the movie I couldn't help but feel it was far beneath Del Toro's ability. He is certainly more gifted than to play the run-of-the-mill action star that he is in The Hunted.

The Hunted is a typical disciple-gone-wrong movie. Del Toro, a deeply covert special forces soldier who "doesn't really exist" is so battle scarred that he goes AWOL and kills some innocent people. Once the government realizes this, they send the man who trained him - Jones - to track him down and catch him. From here it unfolds in an extraordinarily predictable way. The audience is left to feel as though they are watching out of obligation rather than actual interest - 9/10 viewers could probably outline the rest of the story. To try to hold our interest then, the filmmakers include a deep amount of gore in the movie, much more than a typical action film would have. Whether it's photos of decapitations or showing us orphaned children stepping though bodies in Somalia trying to find their parents, The Hunted delivers some disturbing scenes

The problem is that the film doesn't really earn the right to do this. What I mean is, if I'm going to look at sickening images then it really needs to be a good movie otherwise. I'm not going to look at it for the sake of looking at it, and unfortunately that's all The Hunted has to offer.

I advise avoiding this film despite the promising cast. You'll just be waiting for plot twists that never come and hoping Benicio gets back on track in his next role choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars On The Run in the Pacific Northwest
Somewhat reminiscent of the D.C. sniper slayings, this film concerns a battle-fatigued Special Forces veteran of Kosovo, who has seen far too much violence, and becomes an animal lover and wreaks his vengeance by tracking & killing two hunters in the conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest. He is tracked down reluctantly by his former teacher, and by other members of the FBI, again reminiscent of the D.C. snipers, with this critical difference: he has been taught to kill in hand- to- hand combat with primitive weapons he makes himself, not modern high-powered rifles. The film is not for the faint-hearted, and starts with 15 minutes of fiery Hollywood battle footage from the Kosovo War, and its ethnic cleansing. The first half of the remainder might be considered slow by some viewers, but the pace picks up considerably in the second half, as the chase begins in earnest, beginning with the military detention vehicle's accident. The subsequent chase scenes through the streets, construction sites, underground tunnels and whitewater rapids surrounding Portland, Oregon are some of the most exciting you will ever see on film, raising this film briefly to a 5-star level.
They culminate is a gruelling hand-to-hand combat between teacher and pupil above some whitewater rapids as the FBI looks on. Second film I have seen in which Del Toro plays a desperate killer on the run, the other being "21 Grams". He seems to be developing into a Sylvester Stallone-type actor. The film has some other notable touches: the music of Johnny Cash, and how Tommy Lee Jones saves a white dog or wolf from a snare in the film's opening scene and later sees the same dog at the end of the film.

1-0 out of 5 stars Run...away
Some movies are bad yet enjoyable on a silly, nonsenical level. Others are so stupdily conceived and executed they hold all the fascination of passing by a car wreck in slow motion. You simply can't believe what you're seeing. "Running Woman" is one of the latter. A low budget version of "The Fugitive" with a female hero doesn't sound too bad, right? Read on. Theresa Russell plays a art restorer who through complications that make my head hurt ends up accused of the murders of her son and a policeman and running away through the auspices of some Mexican Underground Railroad. Everybody in this movie, especially Russell, acts with a jaw-dropping combination of stupidity and illogic. The police bore in on her as a suspect with a disdain for legal procedure that would make Mark Fuhrman proud. Russell, though running mostly on foot, isolated from her home and near penniless, manages to wear a variety of clothes and wigs that seem to come out of thin air. This was made by one of Roger Corman's companies but even he can usually squeeze some kind of sleazy fun out of a scenario like this. This is so idiotic you can't even enjoy it. How idioitc? At one crucial point, the main villain fires a gun at someone who is holding a huge tank of nerve gas! The villain seems to be the only one surprised when his bullets hit the tank. Theresa Russell isn't the greatest actress in the world but she is still one of the loveliest and it's a shame she spends most of her career in worthless junk like this. Rent this only if you're in the mood to evaporate some brain cells. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars TV PILOT ALERT
THE PRESENCE is a 1992 tv-pilot for NBC that never sold; watching it you can see why. A typically stereotypical group of survivors end up on a deserted (not really, though) island which once housed a facility where genetic breeding was conducted. In the mishmash of the plot, one never knows what really happened, and by its "open ending", you can see how it would have been a series. The cast is wasted, with only flashes of talent from Gary Graham and Joe Lara. Otherwise, its effects are mundane and its suspense level virtually non-existent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Presence: Lord of the Flies Meets Gilligan's Island
All too frequently, big budget Hollywood films sport an impressive cast of well-known actors whose talents go to waste is a mess that leaves the audience shaking its head at its ineptitude. Such a waste of big stars can happen on a low budget film too. In PRESENCE, director Tommy Lee Wallace takes the acting ability of popular film and television star June Lockhart (LASSIE, SERGEANT YORK), Joe Lara, and future bimbo star Nikki Cox and totally misuses their talent in a movie that was supposed to fighten but wound up as merely amusing. The plot involves the time honored cliche of a group of scientists, military men, and bikini wearing CPAs stranded on a lost island when their plane crashes only to find that the island had been inhabited by CIA spooks running forbidden bioharazrd experiments. Naturally, the experiments had gotten out of hand, creating scaly-like creatures right out of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. As if this was not incredible enough, the survivors meet a tribe of natives who seem to have wandered off from the set of GILLIGAN'S ISLAND. You would think that with so many model types in bikinis, such a movie ought to have at least one or two love interests. Model Kathy Ireland bounces her locks around without entangling any man. PRESENCE is so full of cheesy scripting and unbelievable plotting that the eggs that Hollywood lays in its big budget disasters are not limited to them alone. The best part: Kathy Ireland in a bikini. The worst part: everything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRESENCE OF DANGER ISLAND
RELEASED AS A PILOT FOR A SERIES "DANGER ISLAND" AS THE ORIGINAL TITLE. REASON FOR MY 5 STARS IS BECAUSE MY OLDEST BROTHER PLAYED FRANK. AND JUNE LOCKHART WAS MARRIED TO ONE OF MY MOTHERS BEST FRIENDS FROM HER CHILDHOOD DAYS. ANYWAY, THE MOVIE IS WORTH WATCHING BUT PLEASE ONLY EAT FRESH FRUIT WHILE WATCHING IT, DAY OLD FRUIT SPOILS FAST. THE FILM, WELL THINK OF IT AS ED WOODS VERSION OF GILLIGANS ISLAND

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly ridiculous

2-0 out of 5 stars No Illusions
The screenplay by Pablo Kenjves for this Stuart Cooper directed thriller is more interested in the bitter vengeance of Bruce Greenwood as a cop who has been discharged from the service and now works as a security guard for a bank, than Virginia Madsen as his wife who is framed for multiple crimes. This focus has us observe the mechanics of Greenwood's scheme for revenge, which de-thrills things, even giving the narrative a witness to Greenwood thinking he is getting away with it. Ultimately this treatment gets too complicated, with multiple pursuers including the police and an insurance agent. That Madsen is a better detective than the police isn't surprising in this scenario, but it's a shame that her character only becomes active late in the proceedings. This is not to say that Greenwood is a bad actor, or that Kristen Dalton as a woman he has an affair with is either. They just pale in comparison to Madsen. She may be lumbered with a line like "You're so full of rage and hate that you're poisoning both our lives", but she handles a silent response to rejection by Greenwood with subtlety and emotion. That she is playing a non-femme fatale part is evidence of her range, since as a cuckolded wife she retains empathy and has a solid presence. We even accept her faith when otherwise we might consider her a fool, particularly as the boat Greenwood romances her on is called No Illusions. Madsen is arrested under the flimsiest evidence, then on bail is given free reign to pursue Greenwood without any suggestion of police surveillance, and the bank's security for incoming cash is laughable, but Greenwood's affair with Dalton has some eroticism because of his hunky beauty.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bitter Vengeance : The Forgoten Thriller
Bitter Vengeance is a good thriller. It is not a classic by any means, but it is a good friday night thriller. The plot is simple, a security guard bored with his job and life decides to take advantage of his position. What I really liked about the robbery is that the director chose to include it at the very beginning of the movie, as to keep the viewer's attention. From here, the plot twists and turns as the guard (Greenwood) trys to escape to Mexico. All the actors do a decent job of acting, except the wife, who is played too hysterically. Overall, a good action/suspense movie. Enjoy! P.S. Not worth spending $74 on :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching
The film used some technology that was exploited one year later in "Enemy of the State". It contains mystery and suspense interspersed with action. The more-than-one subplot presents some unexpected scenarios and keeps one's interest up to the finale where it all comes together nicely. DVD has basic features, menu of play/scenes/bio/setup with an added extra of being able to watch the movie with only the soundtrack playing. You'll probably want to turn on subtitles for that. Good quality video and audio with no noticeable artifacts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ivory Wayans isnt that much fun
Ivory Wayans is most wanted and Jon Voight is out to get him....starts off good but then wallows in stupid twists and turns and plot points that leave your brain dead..if you wanna see Wayans in something good..check out A Low Down Dirty Shame

1-0 out of 5 stars LEAST WANTED PIECE OF CRAP!!!
This is one of the lamest and stupidest movies in all of cinematic history. The plot was predictable and boring, while the action scenes were no better than the plot. The jokes were lame and Keenan Wayne is not an action star but a comedian. Was this movie made in a week?STAY AWAY FROM THIS GARBAGE!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Better than you'd expect, but not that much better
Synopsis:
In a nutshell, Most Wanted is about a death row, military convict named James Dunn who is recruited from death row to serve in an elite CIA black squad group. The convict is framed for the murder of the First Lady of the United States, a murder he didn't commit. He escapes with his life, then seeks to find the real killer and bring them to justice.

About the Movie:
Overall, this is a mediocre movie. Yet despite that and its plot holes and its fairly unimaginative plot, it can be entertaining in spots. I like this one a lot better than a lot of the action sludge out there, including a lot of the oldies. Of course, it still won't win any award, except maybe a Razzie.

Interestingly enough, Most Wanted stands a career side road for comedian Keenan Ivory Wayans, who's probably best known for his work in "In Living Color" in the 90's. Most Wanted is intended as a serious action film. While there is some humor in the film, it's the action hero variety and not the slap stick brand Wayans is known for. He stars instead as a serious action hero and surprisingly doesn't do as badly as one would expect. While he'll never make a career as an action star, he does pull off the roll, albeit with a lot of cheesy and stagy lines here and there.

The movie co-stars Jon Voight, as very predictably, the villain. This movie, perhaps more than many of the others he's been in, really does reveal what an over-actor he is. Scenes with Voight are almost painful to watch because he so overplays his character that the character becomes a grotesque characature. His over-acting is so bad that he actually was nominated in 1998 in this role for a Razzie for *worst* supporting actor. That's quite a distinction.

The movie also co-stars Jill Hennessy as a doctor who becomes Dunn's unlikely side-kick. In a movie with no female roles except for the First Lady, (who shows up just long enough to get shot and killed) she provides Most Wanted's only female lure. She isn't terrible in her role, but she does very little to make her shine either. Mostly, she's there to add the female element and look pretty.

On the up side, the best played role in the film turns out to be played by Paul Sorvino in CIA Director Kenny Rackburn. Sorvino's solid acting, and charming style help to raise the movie up a notch. It also helps that he's so easy to like. Sorvino provides a nice counterpoint to Voight's horrible and stagey overacting.

Plotwise, Most Wanted isn't really very original. Thankfully, the story moves in a good pace, and despite its predictability and plot holes you could drive a bus through, it still manages to hold your interest throughout. Some of the stunts and special effects are pretty good, and there are a number of action sequences that are a lot of fun (if also a little unbelievable). This one would never get any awards (except a Razzie), but it still can be a fun watch, especially if you've got a bunch of buddies with you to poke fun at it with.

About the DVD:
This DVD comes in a cardboard case, marking it as a budget DVD. The DVD itself is a double sided DVD with both wide-screen and full screen versions included. For the most part, it's an entirely unexciting DVD release, with almost no extra features.

The one exception is the separate music track on the DVD. It allows you to watch the movie without any dialog and just the music. I did watch it that way, just for kicks, and found it fascinating to watch from an artistic standpoint to see how the music was used in the movie. I'm not entirely sure what this feature is good for otherwise, unless you leave the TV on occasionally for background noise.

The picture on this DVD isn't too bad, but I did notice some problems with the sound. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the sound editing in the film itself, or the transfer to DVD. Either way, the sound volume seemed to fluctuate at times, lowering and raising so that I was occasionally reaching for my remote to turn up the volume, only to be blasted out of my chair a few minutes later when it returned to its previous levels. It's not a major problem, but it does lower the overall quality of the release and provides a minor distraction while watching.

Bottom Line is that this is a predictable and unoriginal movie in a budget DVD release (with some technical issues). If you're looking for a cream of the crop action film, this is not the place to look. Still, if you like this type of film, you might like this one. 2 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Wanted of movies
Some people might complain this movie was poorly done but i think it's great entertainment. It doesn't take itself too seriously, i'm not sure if you would consider it a comedy or not but it almost comes off as one without intending to do so. And some of the scenes are just so funny they're unforgettable. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars About as exciting as "Masquerade"
I saw this movie while riding on a bus from Puerto Vallarta to Tepic in central Mexico. For 80's made for tv anti-terrorism drama, it's not too bad. It holds up better over time than its contemporary, Airwolf. The only point of interest of this movie is that the guy who plays Josh Lyman on West Wing appears in it. I can't imagine why he leaves this off his bio on the NBC website. Next time you see him, be sure to go "Hey, it's that guy from C.A.T. Squad!" Then plead ignorance if he mentions his other work. ...
