3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
Like the other reviewer said this is a fairly decent video showing a good history of rock and blues guitar, and the guitar in general. But the video fails to mention greats such as Duane Allman, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Joe Satriani and so on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Teachers Beware: PG-16
Actually, it is a decent video, covering a fair amount of territory in the history of Rock and Blues guitar playing. Lots of big-name cameos (though they neglect to introduce some of them to the camera by name). Unfortunately, it is NOT APPROPRIATE for public school if you are looking for something to add this perspective a guitar class--You may get away with it if you preview and fast forward through the 5-or-so instances of rough language, the smoking, and the less-than-quaint section on the sexual nature of playing the electric guitar. Censored, you can use it, but there is probably a better option out there. It is a much better buy if you are not planning on sharing this with the 13-year-olds in your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN BLOWS TORONTO AWAY!
This performance captures Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble playing a smokin' set of tunes at Toronto's El Mocambo in late 1983. In this very intimate setting, Stevie, Whipper, and Tommy play a fantastic set, a type of performance that Stevie always gave. He starts out with two instrumentals, "Testify" and "So Excited" (my personal fave). Then he goes into Jimi Hendrix's classic "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)". After burning through "Pride And Joy", he goes through Howlin' Wolf's "Tell Me" and Buddy Guy's "Mary Had A Little Lamb". Then, the show-stopper: "Texas Flood". Almost ten minutes of textbook blues-playing, culminating with him playing behind his back. Watching him play this song is like someone punching me in the gut. Then he plays behind his head for "Love Struck Baby" and does a great cover of John Lee Hooker's "Hug You, Squeeze You". Then he has his rock-star moment with Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun", beating his guitar, Number One, to death on the stage. It makes one realize why Number One looked the way it did. He encores with "Lenny", a performance so beautiful and so full of passion that it would melt the most hardened blues-purist's heart. SRV then concludes the performance with Lonnie Mack's "Wham!", then sets his guitar down, says "Thank you so very much, we got's to go", and he and Double Trouble leave the stage. This performance is so fiery and intense. There is no way to describe it. You'll just have to go out and buy it. GO AHEAD! BUY IT NOW! OR ELSE! LONG LIVE STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really is as good as people say
Better than the Austin City Limits compilation, SRV is absolutely smokin' on this. Perhaps the best blues concert recording ever. A must-have if you like SRV.

5-0 out of 5 stars TAKES THE CAKE
THIS DVD CANNOT BE TOUCHED. I HAVE BEEN COLLECTING DVD`S FOR A WHILE NOW AND THIS ONE IS THE BEST I OWN. YOU WILL NOT WASTE A PENNIE ON THIS RIG. I CANNOT STOP WATCHING IT. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY THIS PIECE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supersonic Electric Wizardry
Any guitar fans DVD collection is incomplete without Live at the El Mocambo. If you are a Stevie Ray fan and you dont own this DVD its almost blasphemous. The DVD itself provides a great selection of songs, great camera angles(for those who dig his technique) and the chance to see the greatest Texas guitarist of all time. All you have to do is put the DVD on, max out the volume and feel the music from Stevie Ray's soul to your own, just the way he wanted it and just the way it should be. Trust me, you wont be disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL SRV
THIS IS A GREAT DVD. I AM A BIG FAN OF STEVIE RAY AND I THINK THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE TONE HE HAD QUITE NICELY. THIS DVD MAKES ME WISH MORE AND MORE THAT I COULD SEE HIM LIVE. YOU SEE AND HEAR PEOPLE AND ARTISTS NOW A DAYZ THAT TRY TO IMITATE THAT TONE. ITS NO USE TO EVEN TRY BECAUSE OF THE SOUL, PASSION, AND POWER THATS QUITE NOTICABLE IN HIS GUITAR PLAYING. I RECOMMEND THIS DVD TO ANYONE. IT IS THE SLOSEST THING YOU WILL GET TO SEEING HIM LIVE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guitar Legend!
Man could Stevie Ray play! This man was a guitar genius and the music world suffered a huge loss when he passed on in 1990. Fortunately, we have these great videos like this one so we can still watch Stevie play. There are 11 live performances and a video collage at the end of the DVD set to the music of 'Little Wing'. The first 3 performances were filmed in 1983, the other 7 are from October 1989, and all are taken from his only 2 performances on the "Austin City Limits" broadcasts. Simply amazing, this man poured his heart and soul into his music. Double Trouble are an excellent backup band, but Stevie steals the show. He does an amazing cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic 'Voodoo Chile'. The part in 'Texas Flood' during the '83 show where Stevie plays that solo behind his back is just unbelievable and amazing. My fav part of the '89 performance is 'Riviera Paradise', his performance is gripping. All songs are great, and I'm amazed every time I watch this concert. If you want to see some great guitar playing, then get this one and treat yourself to some lightnin' fast blues. What are you waiting for? ROCK ON!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great SRV performance...shabby audio
I would rate Stevie Ray's performances 5 stars, the picture quality 4 stars, and the audio quality barely 2...which averages out to 4 stars for this DVD. The 3 tracks recorded in 1983 feature the worst sound; it's aggravating to see Chris Layton hit a cymbal hard, but to hear no crash of said cymbal, and this pretty much sums up the overall audio quality of those tracks. The sound is a bit better in the 1989 performances, with the exception of "The House is Rocking," which actually sounds like it was dubbed from a cheap cassette tape. Just how awful the audio is becomes more apparent when you view this set back-to-back with "One Night in Texas...," the DVD of outtakes from SRV's 1989 "Austin City Limits" performance (packed with the "SRV" box set, which features absolutely superb audio. I expect Epic eventually will re-release "Live from Austin, Texas" with 5.1 surround sound, forcing us all to purchase the updated version. Still, if you're a Stevie Ray fan, you NEED "Live from Austin, Texas."

2-0 out of 5 stars Wrong songs!
I watched the DVD and was immediately disappointed. I saw the original two performances in 1983 and 1989 (on TV of course). His second performance in 1989 was far more powerful. His rendition of Voodoo Chile was somewhat tame in the 1983 episode that you get on this DVD whereas the 1989 performance was his best ever. Even better than the El Macombo. This was not on the DVD of course. This DVD is a typical Sony ripoff. Until they give the entire 1989 performance on DVD, Live from the El Macombo is the best example of SRV's genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great DVD!!
As a huge Stevie fan, I gotta say that this DVD is really great. It has alot of great songs with some kick-ass guitar work! If you are or you aren't in to Stevie, you'll still like it. Plus, it has a pretty moving music video of Little Wing.
If you're considering getting this DVD, do it! Its worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Still selling this?
Geez, I never buy music from dead guys. That's why Bing Crosby and Sinatra are still so popular. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN - 10/03/1954 - Forever
This video shows a lot of sides of Stevie's personality. He truly had a heart of gold. And yes, all the reviewers here agree he is a Master, one can tell that just by listening to him playing with eyes closed! But watching him it is immediately and definitely apparent.

These video clips are fantastic! I especially love "Love Struck Baby," (he's the boss-like there was ever any doubt!) "Cold Shot," (shows his sense of humor) "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is truly awesome (I love them "playing" in the storm and changing winds! The ending is perfect!) and "Change It." (The good ole west--ahhhh.) Honestly I love all of the videos but those stand out the most for me. The last song "Crossfire" he looks better than I believe I've ever seen.

I wish this was in DVD but if you are a fan, it is a must-own. I highly recommend it and promise if you care anything for Stevie and his awesome band you will enjoy it. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Several music videos and a live track from New Orleans
First up, I am an avowed SRV fan; this review can be considered somewhat biased. The VHS version is a compilation of music videos released during the 80's. The videos span the period from an early 80's "Pride and Joy" set in none other than Austin's Rome Inn club to the late 80's release of Crossfire. I particularly like Cold Shot and SRV's swampy rendition of Superstition; the video's story line is cool too. The real treat for me was the live MTV video taped aboard the riverboat President in New Orleans. SRV and Double Trouble treat the crowd to a marvelous rendition of Chester Burnett's I'm Leaving You (Commit a Crime). So, with this tape, you'll get a good look at SRV in his awesome, barn-burnin' 20's (Pride & Joy, Cold Shot), his drug and alchohol-plagued years (Change It...he looks like an old man), and during his amazing post-rehab period in the late 80's (New Orleans, Crossfire). All-in-all a good tribute to SRV and Double Trouble. And with SRV, how can you go wrong?

5-0 out of 5 stars SRV and Double Trouble: Pride And Joy 1990!!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the best VHS out their with a collection of music videos featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble also Live Performences. I would rate this a 5 because this could not get any better the music videos are really cool this is a must have for an SRV fan. My favorite is Couldnt Stand The Weather when SRV is playing his custom hamilton guitar in a rain storm very cool! I also like the western side of Change It. This is such a cool movie I hope they can release this sometime on DVD it would be sweeter so enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video compilation of classic SRV, but....
This video compilation is great. It was a long time coming. SRV has been gone for, what, almost 12 years now? All the videos are here, Cold Shot, Superstition, Tightrope, Crossfire, and even a live one in New Orleans on a riverboat at the jazz festival. I only wish they would wake up and put this on DVD format. Doesn't it deserve to be?

5-0 out of 5 stars SRV Priceless
This is more of a request then a review. These videos of the late/great SRV are priceless. Everyone of them. From Coldshot- Couldnt Stand The Weather-Tightrope and all in between. I request that it be transfered to DVD format at once.... ... Read more
