Approved by J. Edgar Hoover himself, this idealized telling of the FBI's origins spans the years between Hoover's appointment in the '20s and the Red Scare of the mid-'50s. Beginning with an investigation that showcases the talent and resources available to the FBI, dedicated agent Chip Hardesty (Jimmy Stewart) tells new recruits how the agency was streamlined into a professional crime-fighting organization. Using his personal life story as a backdrop, Hardesty takes the new men (and the viewer) through cases involving gangsters, land grabs, and Communist spies. Vera Miles plays Hardesty's dedicated wife, while Murray Hamilton helps out as gung-ho fellow agent Sam Crandall. Lots of pro-Hoover PR and propaganda, but it never gets in the way of the action or family drama. Interestingly, the history of the Hardesty family is almost as good as the history of the agency.--Mark Savary ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Pure Malarkey
The USA got along fine for 150 years without a national police force before the Congress in its wisdom tapped a mentally unbalanced lawyer and career bureaucrat to run the Federal Bureau of Investigation. To his credit, J. Edgar Hoover did introduce modern scientific method to the practice of criminology, but activities of the FBI's field agents have been a fiasco from the word go. Unintentionally, from the producers standpoint, you get some sense of the FBI's relentless bungling in this film, a dramatized "history" of the agnecy, in which the Bureau is usually a day late and a dollar short, crossing wires with local law enforcement officers at every turn and making big noises about very small accomplishments. Murray Hamiltion delivers a monologue about the necessity of a police state that is truly despicable. It's a shame that James Stewart, a genuine patriot and conservative, lent his reputation to this tripe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie despite the flaws
This movie is a view of the FBI that was approved by J. Edgar Hoover himself, so it has lots of propaganda and at least two major errors -the famous Kansas City massacre of the FBI agents was erroneously attributed to Pretty Boy Floyd and there was no proof that Ma Barker was in the Barker gang. Nevertheless, it's lots of fun. High drama, a good script and famous criminal names move the story along. It slows a bit when the James Stewart character has family problems, but that's okay. It has a slam-bang beginning and even a great musical score. Everybody in the movie is terrific.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Early Days Of The FBI
1959 film which chronicles the early days of the Federal Bureau of Investigation through the eyes of one it's g-men, played by Jimmy Stewart. Film starts with the small scale cases that agents were assigned to, such as an investigation of financial thieves in the 1920's. Film continues from the 20's all the way into the 1950's, covering such topics as the famous era of gangsters in the 1930's, exposing German operatives in South America during WWII, and tracking down Russian Spies in America during the first full decade of the Cold War, the 1950's. The FBI Story covers the evolution of the agency and the emotions of a family towards their father's dangerous job in the FBI. Good movie, that does well at explaining the happenings in the film. Film gives good insight into how the FBI operated back then, using occasional narration alongside the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great FBI movie
This is definately the best movie made about the FBI. Stewart is as always, great, in a role made just for him. The movie follows Stewart and his carrer through the Bureau. It starts in the 20's, and goes through until the 50's. He solves famous cases, fights the Ku Klux Klan, fights gangsters, and still manages a family. Vera Miles is great as his wife, with Murray Hamilton as his best friend and fellow agent. This is one of the best depictions of the Bureau, showing its' victories and always giving credit to its' agents. It shows the coruage and bravery of the agents and the men who help out in their labs. The film is definitely the best depictoin of the FBI in film history.

4-0 out of 5 stars G man James Stewart
Here, the real life Air Force General and decorated war hero plays the part of a true blue FBI Special Agent who rises through the ranks to become an instructor at the FBI Academy. J. Egdar Hoover actually did a thorough background investigation of James Stewart to make sure he was the kind of morally upright straight American who was suitable to play the part of an FBI Special Agent. Needless to say, James Stewart passed with flying colours. An uncritical view of the FBI and their exploits from prohibition to WW2 and beyond. The most touching part is when his wife leaves him because she can't take the stress of being a Special Agent's wife and worries about his safety. Later, she returns when she realises how much her children miss him. James Stewart is superb in this role playing the patriotic, idealistic straight American hero who stands for Truth, Freedom and the American Dream. This movie is based on the book of the same name about the Bureau. As the FBI motto goes, Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Saturday matinee delight.
A Greek fisherman named Demetrios rescues a shipwrecked princess. He helps her return home and finds himself a slave in the advanced civilization of Atlantis. Due to arrogant corruption and moral laxity, the country is an abomination before heaven. Unexpected religious overtones enter the story. Impending doom hangs heavy in the air. The birds and animals flee the approaching destruction. Eventually, the earth moves, thunder crashes, and the volcano rocks-n-rolls. Others complain that this is an inferior effort from director George Pal. Comparisons aside, this is a good fantasy adventure story. The MGM production values are above average for this type of film. The animal men are demonic in their transition from human to animal. Demetrios's ordeal of fire and water is exciting. Take a basic sci-fi plot of a lost civilization, add "The Island of Dr. Moreau," mix with "Spartacus," splice in some costume spectacle, enhance with crisp color photography and you have this movie. In fact, the director uses footage from historical film epics in the explosive and fiery climax. The death ray is lethal, albeit primitive. There is an unfortunate lack of a Ray Harryhausen type rampaging monster. The grim visage horned idol just sits there when special effects could have done wonders. Bottom line, this is a "G" rated adventure story fine for family viewing. Baby boomers may recall seeing this film back in the early '60s at a Saturday matinee double feature teamed with some Italian spear and sandal epic. Nostalgia rules. ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars ATLANTIS, THE LOST CLASSIC
I have a particular warm spot in my heart for the films of George Pal, and ATLANTIS, THE LOST CONTINENT is my favorite. To me, the movie is what I call the "Ultimate Saturday Afternoon Matinee". It's got everything - a brave Greek hero, a beautiful Atlantean princess, the "House of Fear", the "Trial of Fire and Water" in the colliseum, a gigantic crystal death ray and an apocalyptic finale!!! Does our hero survive or perish on the doomed continent? Your in for a treat finding out! With great production and a marvelous music score by Russel Garcia. *****

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite up to the producer's standard
Producer/director George Pal is responsible for two of filmdom's best sci-fi/fantasy films: 1953's "The War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine" from 1960. Because of the excellence of those productions, it is inevitable that anything else done by Pal would suffer in comparison.

"Atlantis, the Lost Continent" sports some of the producer's trademark state-of-the-art special effects (the Nautilus-like ocean craft and the use of other superbly crafted miniatures). However, the film's shortcomings lie in the cast.

While stars Anthony Hall and Joyce Taylor are good to look at and compliment each other, they just don't cut it in the acting department. In the aforementioned classic films, Pal had the fortune of having accomplished actors Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne (all in "War..."), as well as Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux, and Alan Young in "Time".

The supporting actors of "Atlantis..." score a little better. Edward Platt, later to be "The Chief" on the 60's sitcom "Get Smart" and Jon Dall, veteran of Hitchcock's "The Rope" and the epic "Spartacus", do well in their respective roles of "Azor" and "Zaren".

The great mystery is why several actors' voices were dubbed by voice great Paul Frees (who provided the pre-credit narration). Frees, who also appeared in Pal's "War of the Worlds" as the newscaster reporting the impending A-bomb drop, was a staple for many animated features and had only one rival: Mel Blanc. To hear Frees's voice coming from at least three of "Atlantis's" characters is a wee bit disconcerting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Matinee Fantasy
Anyone that enjoys the older fantasy films like "Jason and the Argonauts" or the old Hercules movies should enjoy this movie. It is a well made adventure with the lost city of Atlantis, a fish shaped submarine, mutated animal men, a giant, a crystal ray gun, and beautiful women. What more could you ask for a great Saturday afternoon matinee. Sure it may not be as entertaining to adults as it once was but the kids will certainly love it. The whole family can watch this one. This is at least a couple notches above the B movies. I am surprised this isn't out on DVD since I am sure it would sell. I can't beleive I am the only one that would buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Atlantis the Lost Continent
I remember as a kid seeing "Atlantis the Lost Continent" along with "Giant of Marathon" with Steve Reeves in May 1961 at the Eastown Theatre in Detroit.
Two handsome leading men (Reeves and Anthony Hall) save their kingdoms from doom and gloom and win the love of a beautiful lady in the process.
"Atlantis" has been panned by critics over the years yet I loved this film as a 12 year old in 1961. It was science fiction at it's best with colorful costumes, ogres, wolf men, mad scientists, beautiful maidens and villains. How about the submarine shaped like a fish!!
Anthony Hall as the greek fisherman could have used a little weight training from Mr biceps - Steve Reeves - as he appears a little too thin for a hero. The staged scene of Demetrious on a boat with his maiden (Joyce Taylor - by the way what ever happened to her?) passing through the pillars of Hercules is hopelessly silly with fake water sounds and fog along with horned owls hooting! Best part of the movie is Demetrious's fight with a giant ogre in a pool of fire and water. The ogre appears to be about 350 lbs and Demetrious outmaneuvers him and lights his hair on fire with hilarious laughing from the massive crowd in the "coliseum"
Some spectacular special effects at the end of the film with Atlantis exploding and disappearing into the sea.
The laser ray gun turning hapless victims into skeletons excited the matinee crowd in 1961.
This is a fun film made at a time when fantasy films were in vogue such as "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad", "The magic Sword", and "Jack the Giant Killer" In fact Kerwin Matthews (Sinbad) would have probably been a better choice for Demetrious.
Enjoy this film with the kids and dont worry about swearing, beheadings, and explicit sex. Good family fantasy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm fuzzies
This holiday special is like a cup of hot cocoa for my soul. I don't know why- I never even saw this movie when I was growing up, but discovered it in college when the Family Channel (pre-ABC) aired it during their 25 Days of Christmas. I fell in love with it though, and it's been a Christmas staple in my house ever since then. My tape is almost worn out as I've watched it every year now for almost ten years. My three-year-old daughter and I would put this tape in almost every night this Christmas season and fall asleep to it, not because it's boring, but because it is sooooo soothing! I have to agree with what one other reviewer said, that is reminds me of what Christmas meant to me as a young child. Watching this movie is always a treat for my inner child, and my actual child loves it too- something wonderful we can share together! My husband thinks we're both crazy, though. That "70's" quality only registers for him as tacky, tacky, tacky. Yes, it's tacky. But it sure does give me the warm fuzzies!

Two funny "bloopers" I noticed in the movie:
1. The tree changes size, shape, and garland colors several times.
2. Marshmallows is misspelled "Marshmellows" in a few frames, and spelled correctly in others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Christmas Special
This is one of my all time favorite christmas movies. I had no idea why they stopped airing it, but kids everywhere are missing out. This movie made such a lasting impression on me that my husband and I named our dog Nakomi because I remembered the character.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Was Truly the Most HEART-WARMING ANIMATED STORY EVER
I loved 'Santa and the Three Bears'. I heard the reason they stopped airing this wonderful story was the ACLU deemed it a religious cartoon. Does the AC stand for 'Anti-Christ'? I've never heard of something so evil.

Yeah, pull "Santa and the Three Bears', but keep the violent, insidious movies that those boneheads from the ACLU love and worship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Santa & the Three Bears
This is my absolute favorite Christmas program. Until I found it on Amazon, I had spent many years searching for it since it rarely airs on television. Thanks to Amazon, it's once again a part of my holiday tradition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hanna-Barbera and Christmas!
Santa and the Three Bears is a great little holiday special for young and old alike. I don't recall seeing this as a youngster, it wasn't until I was older that I stumbled across this one holiday season and was immediately captivated by the story. Now, I saw the film on commercial television, so it wasn't until I saw the Prism video release that I saw the live-action sequences to the story.

Hal Smith and Jean Vader Pyl lend their voices to this animated classic and it's simply a fun holiday film. Find a copy, sit down with your children or grandchildren or even sneak it in the VCR when you're alone and be swept away by the endearing story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well Done, Low Budget "Beauty and the Beast".
Edward L. Cahn has become a forgotten man among low budget filmmakers. Not as gifted as Edgar G. Ulmer nor stunningly incompetent like Ed Wood Jr or as prolific as William Beaudine, Cahn was nevertheless responsible for many of the more memorable moments which occured in 50's B movies. To the first generation raised on television IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE and INVISIBLE INVADERS were classics of their kind which inspired other more celebrated films (ALIEN and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) Cahn earned the nickname "Fast Eddie" in Hollywood because of his ability to shoot his pictures quickly and efficiently (he made 110 films over a 30 year period). He first came to prominence at MGM directing the last several OUR GANG shorts in the late 1930's. He then worked for several independent outfits who released through Columbia, American International, and United Artists where he finished his career. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was his swan song and his only film in color which is too bad because one of its highlights is the imaginative use of lighting to enhance the color photography. The Beast make-up was done by Jack P. Pierce who did the legendary Universal monsters which is why it resembles Lon Chaney Jr's WOLF MAN. Mark Damon (FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER) and Joyce Taylor make a lovely couple as the title characters while veteran villians Walter Burke and Michael Pate help to add spice to the proceedings. There are also several shots which, as was characteristic of Cahn, manage to stick with you once the movie is over though you really don't know why. While definitely not the best version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (the Jean Cocteau 1946 film will always reign supreme while Disney's will remain the best known), this one is not without merit. My kids and I enjoyed this movie and so will you. "Fast Eddie" was one of those rare directors who could get the very most out of the very least. The ability to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear is a talent that deserves to be remembered. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Twice watched flick
Nice flick, and yes, reminicent of Corman in a slightly more straightforward way. Not only does it lack Corman's dreamy camerawork, but the picture also seems by bits to be suffering from too much bright lighting, where there should be shadows and mid-tones. The film is well presented, the copy is very good, with probably the best picture / sound quality available. Definitely not terryfying to modern viewer, but worth buying, if you have all the Corman films, and still want more!

5-0 out of 5 stars On the original movie.
Scoff all you want to about whether or not this movie is scary by todays terms. I haven't see the DVD but I saw the original movie back in 1963 as a six year old. First movie I think I ever saw in a theater and it gave me nightmares for YEARS. I have searched for this movie for years in ANY format to see (as an adult) what so terrified me in my youth. After 40 years I have finally found it available in a format I can purchase and view - and have just ordered it. After a long search, glad I finally found it.

3-0 out of 5 stars worth watching
The movie suffers ironically from the "House of Green Gables", the most well known story in the movie. It dragged along, even Beverly Garland and Vincent Price's charisma couldn't hold the story together and that's saying a lot.
But I do recommend it. The first two stories were imaginative and well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars THREE TIMES THE PRICE
While all of these tales might have been mildly scary back in 1963, the only saving grace for them these days is the fact that all three star Vincent Price. I applaud MGM's Midnite Movies for bringing us more of Price's work on DVD. While I consider this film weaker than a Corman flick, I still had to add it to my collection on the strength of it's star. Two thumbs up (and 3 stars) to Vincent Price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terror Times Three.
This is an obvious attempt by another filmmaker to copy the success of the Roger Corman/American International/Edgar Allan Poe tales starring Vincent Price. They even went so far as to cast Price in the lead role. The anthology of three tales based on the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne is worth viewing, but you have to be a determined collector of gothic horror flicks to take an interest in this one. The movie suffers in comparison with the Poe product. Instead of Corman's creepy camp worthy of multiple viewing, we have straight-faced tales of the supernatural. The first story, "Dr. Heidigger's Experiment" fares the best. Price and Sebastian Cabot discover the secret of rejuvenation and resurrect Cabot's love of 38 years ago. Instead of a dusty skeleton in a grungy gown, we now have a dishy blonde in a plunging negligee. Combined with the color photography and period detail, the mood here begins to resemble the heaving bosoms of Hammer. "Rappacini's Daughter" plods along, slow paced and poisonous, with its tragic romance. "The House of Seven Gables" tries to capture the mood of the classic novel, but it only achieves modest results before it collapses on itself. The supernatural overtone of the stories is subdued. Vincent Price grimaces and tries to look tragically sorrowful. The no frills Midnite Movies edition of the DVD includes the original trailer, but no bonus extras. Proceed at your own risk. ;-) ...
