5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie Ever.
I tremble as I write this review, for fear that I cannot put into words how I feel about this movie. This film...touched me in a way no other film ever has. I watch it endlessly, studying every detail, every nuance, every line of dialogue. This film is so beautiful, every aspect. The acting, the script, the photography, all of it. Danny Embling stands next to Holden Caulfield as one of the greatest fictional characters ever created. This movie has inspired me so much, every time I watch it I am still deeply moved. The final scene where Danny sits, smoking the cigarette and looking out at the landscape uttering the last words of the film will always haunt me. I hope someday to get to Willy Hill.

4-0 out of 5 stars Danny loves Freya, but Freya loves Trevor...
"The Year My Voice Broke" is a touching coming-of-age film from Australia. Set in the 1962 in a small Outback town in New South Wales, the title refers to Danny Embling (Noah Taylor), who has always been in love with the beautiful but independent Freya Olson (Loene Carmen). They have been friends since childhood, but, unfortunately, she falls for Trevor (Ben Mendelsohn), the school's star rugby player who has more than a taste for running afoul of the law. Writer-Director John Duigan must be working from material close to home here, because he does an excellent job of catching the pain and torture of teenage longing, especially in the scenes where Danny followz Freya and Trevor on their dates. The ending for the film is certainly not a happy one, but what is important is that it certainly rings true for all those of us who remember how it feels the first time you fall in love and she simply does not have a clue. "The Year My Voice Broke" is as bitter-sweet as you would expect from the title. Standing out in the supporting cast is Bruce Spence (from the "Mad Max" movies) who plays Jonah, a railroad signal man who is busy writing the first truly erotic Australian novel. This 1988 film won five Australian Film awards including Best Picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars A rural tragedy
This a pleasant and moving little film. Its strong points are the sence of place and the landscape. The sountrack is the Lark Ascending by Vaughn Williams. Although English music it captures the feel of the Australian country side wonderfully.

The hero of the film is a young boy of 15 who fall in love with an older girl from a poorer family. She is involved with an older kid who is always getting into trouble. The 15 year old watches the tragedy which unfolds from a distance. Around him live adults who have lived damaged lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poignant tale that captures the essence of growing up.
How easy it is to forget, the often awkward and sometimes painful moments we endure, in making the transistion from childhood to adulthood. "The year my voice broke", does a wonderful job of rekindling those feelings, while at the same time adding dashes of good Aussie humour, which keeps the mood from being too sombre. The setting, in a sleepy Australian country town, where the street lamps attract hundreds of circling insects at night, adds much to the atmosphere, as does the wonderful, haunting musical score. This is one of my all-time favorite Australian films. The only note of disappointment for me, was the DVD transfer itself, which is not much better than your average video. However, given that this is a relatively unknown film outside Australia, I guess I'm happy that it made the transfer to DVD at all. Acting by the entire cast is quite believable, though not polished in the typical Hollywood style. In particular, through the lead role of Danny, touchingly portayed by Noah Taylor, I was drawn into the turbulent, and bittersweet ordeals of his emerging adolescence. I've watching "The year my voice broke" many times, yet I still find it a moving, satisfying experience, that leaves me feeling reflective even after the credits have finished. Highly recommended for teenagers and up. ... Read more

"Bed of Nails" would have been a better title for this romance, an excruciating exercise that brings out all the worst in the genre. Christian Slater's performance is the high point of this flick, but his character is so obvious that even his subtle skills ultimately makes little difference. Slater plays Lewis, a florist who looks up one night during one of his habitual nocturnal walks and spies Mary Stuart Masterson weeping in a window. The next day he follows her to work and delivers a gorgeous arrangement of posies, leaving her guessing as to the identity of her secret admirer. We must wonder why Lewis pursues her with abandon, as Masterson's character Lisa seems nothing but a dull workaholic. Well, okay, she's also neurotic. First-time director-writer Michael Goldenberg's lopsided script lets us see the psychic damage harbored by both of the main characters, but doesn't make Lisa interesting enough to warrant all the attention heaped upon her, whereas Lewis is a model of perfection.Goldenberg often slips and slides over many details in thestory. Since the dialogue is not particularly witty or meaningful, andthe plot has pretty much withered by the second reel, there isn't muchleft on the screen to enjoy. --Rochelle O'Gorman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT LOVE STORY THAT WILL LIVE ON AND ON.
A very wholesome story that I can't stop watching. I bought two copies yesterday. One for me and one for my daughter. I fell madly in love with Mary and Lewis. Such a sweet love story-I loved the way Lewis allowed her to do the kissing and didn't demand to much of her. It was refreshing to see a man who respected a woman, who was close to his family. It's such a uplifting movie that anytime that I'm down I put it on. this is the first time I've ever watch anything over 3 times and I've lost count how many times I've watch this. I've rented UNTAMED HEART today and it's excellent but BED OF ROSES is way above it. I got on internet and have read all I could find about Christian and plan to watch all his work except the violent movies. I was just thrilled to see that he has become a christian and I for one will be praying for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful - Can't Stop Watching It!!
Bed of Roses is the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. On a scale of 1-10, Christian Slater is a 30!!! This is just a great romantic movie, without the violence, sex and swearing that most movies have. I have watched it 4 times and plan to watch it again. Mary Stuart Masterson is also great. I would love to see both of them do another movie. They are great together - like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The music was also great. I love the songs that are sung and would love to know where I can get the soundtrack. I can't rave enough about this movie. Thanks for the GREAT entertainment!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ~Beautiful~
This is one of my favorite movie of Christian Slater, very sweet, soft & gentle, romantic heart-warming film. Christian plays as a florist. His passion, honest, and true love rescues a cold-hearted business-oriented New Yorker lady Lisa (played by Mary Stuart Masterson). They fall in love together quite fast, but some imprefect childhood and psychological barriers separate them apart. Unlike the other great movie 'Untamed Heart', this one has a good happy ending. This is truely indeed a beautiful story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story of Love
Lisa is a workaholic basically feeding her [adult] drive with promotions and accolades from her boss. She eats and breathes her work trying to cover up her pain. But one night it breaks through and a young man, Slater, sees her. He is a man who I would love to meet. Very sensitive, he gives her flowers, hiding the fact he sent them. He is so child like and sweet, Lisa can't help but fall for him. The scenery is rich with flowers and plants and pretty buildings. Lisa holds a terrible secret, the film doesn't delve into it to much just playing out Lisa's boderline behavior. Slater works to keep the relationship real. The movie works because of the sweetness. The plot is not unusual, but Slater's character is a nice touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this one.
The film, while it has some minor shortcommings, overall was very likeable. Both Christian and Mary played the parts with genuine feeling. And Kate Seagull ( I think!) almost stole the show with her performance as the best friend. One thing I noticed on the dvd was that the theatrical trailer carried some scenes that were not in the film, and I am wondering how to find (if there is) this film with those deleted scenes. The film was a little short and those scenes may elaborate the story line. Also add to an entertaining film. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love boys, you will love Simon Burke in this film.
The charming child actor Simon Burke does a remarkable job connecting with his audience in this film. The film is about adolescent sex play and developing boys during puberty while confined to an all boys boarding school. The school is opressive but the boys use creative way's to survive this and try to love their developing bodies as best they can. Tom Allen (Simon Burke) has a charm about his smile that will get you in the heart and he knows how to act as well. The film is very well made and does accurately portray life in boys boarding schools. The Australian version of boys boarding schools seems to be much more opressive than the Brithish version of the same type of environment, of course this is from an American public school reviewer who has read a lot about these things. Note that this film is not a dark portrayal of life nor is it exploitive of boys sexuality. The boy's seem to have a ruggedness about their sexual curiosity that withstands the abuse of the system in the school. Also note that this film does not portray any sexual activity between the staff and the boys, but the staff sure has a botched up attitude about their own bodies. You will love the film.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Devil's Playground
A good movie with a message.
I liked all the extras- Trailer & Photo gallery.
What in the world is the "viewer from europe" writing about when he says- bad copy with no extras. He must have a Bootlegged copy. I have a DVD and so does a friend.
Both are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The body will not be denied."
UH-oh . . . a movie about male libido. You can run, you can hide . . . or you can go on a poignant journey with Fred Schepisi as he takes you on this semi-autobiographical tour of a Catholic seminary in Australia, circa the Fifties. The first problem to overcome, obviously, is the DVD's cover art: no, it's not about priests who prey on boys. The straight-and-squeamish out there may presume that the movie is primarily about gay issues, but they would be wrong. Schepisi's priests are all straight-shooters, overturning a generally cherished stereotype (the few scenes involving homosexuality occur between the students). Instead, *The Devil's Playground* is about sexuality itself, or, more specifically, the war between Dogma and Glands: both priests and students are caught in this grimly funny and exasperating struggle. Schepisi is most adamant about being fair to both sets of individuals. On the one hand, you have the monk who spends his rare night away from the seminary at the local watering hole, getting desperately drunk, and flirting with factory girls right up to the point when a one-night-stand seems imminent. ("I barely escaped!" he pants to his fellow-priest as they run out of the bar.) On the other hand, we see the adolescent students in various stages of terminal puberty: they goggle at pinups; they play sadomasochistic games at secret night assignations; they flirt with the local girls . . . all the while dealing with new hair under their pits, wet dreams, embarrassing confessions to their teachers, fury at God, and secret wishes to give up the vocation. It's pretty heavy going, particularly the case of the strictest priest in the seminary, who, made helpless by compulsion, spends his day away from the school at the local public swimming pool. After ogling the bathing-suited ladies, he absconds to the lavatory, shaking with self-loathing. (The fantasy this episode causes, later that night, has to be one of the most masterfully shot "dream sequences" I've seen.) Of course, there's also a lot of keen, rueful humor that brings much-needed perspective to this stifling atmosphere. Sex, after all, is pretty funny. But as much as Schepisi respects the men of the cloth (and the boys who aspire to the cloth), he never lets you forget where he comes down on the Catholic Church's war against physical desire: "The body will not be denied." [Trivia note: watch for Thomas Keneally, author of *Schindler's List*, playing the role of a visiting friar.]

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor quality DVD
This is a fantastic movies about the goings on in a Catholic boarding school in the 1950s. The struggles the boys and priests have between their minds and the lusts of their bodies is compelling and disturbing. This only reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is for the poor quality of the DVD release. Allied Artists Classics apparently just slapped a videotape version onto disc -- the picture is fuzzy, it jumps once in a while, the sound is hollow, the transfer is full screen and there are no special features. For [the money]I expected more.

5-0 out of 5 stars justin
this would be no. 1 movie ever produced in australia about what goes on in an all boys boarding school and i would believethat all the examples in the movie are true. i went to a boarding school with only all boys and the sex that went on there was unbelievable. we all were involved and this movie really caused a stir here. i am pretty sure it was screened at the movies. it is a revelation as to what boys get up to to release there sexual needs. see it and enjoy. even the priests get in on the act BUT there is No hint of interferance with the boys ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Bear fan!
I LOVED THIS MOVIE!

I have been a fan of Bear Bryant ever since I can remember. He was without a doubt one of the toughest college coaches in the history of football. The Junction Boys is about Coach Bryants tenure at Texas A&M. Sure some critics say that this movie focused more on the brutal treatment of player rather than football, but thats is what set coach Bryant apart from other coachs. His practices were brutal, maybe to the point of torture. But maybe his long hard practices are part of what made him one of the winningest coaches in college football history! If your going to cry about this not being a football film, go watch Remember The Titans instead. But if you want a true insite on the icon that is Paul Bear Bryant, and what he was like as a man, this movie is a must have! Roll Tide!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Completely Wasted Opportunity
Thanks a bunch, filmmakers: You've taken a terrific book, brimming with potential for cinematic presentation, and turned it into a stale old formula rendering of a boot-camp movie. You might as well have hired R. Lee Ermey to be the coach, or perhaps Frank Sutton as Sgt. Carter.

This story should have been told as it was in the book, beginning with the spirit of a college unlike any other in the world, a devotion to a campus with a theme which exists nowhere else: The vision of Texas A&M was the foundation of this tale.

Paul "Bear" Bryant, focused only on football, thought he was taking a mere little coaching job at a small school as just a step on the ladder of his career. Upon arrival, though, he found himself part of a richly woven society, the Fighting Texas Aggies. The place exuded spirit, and Bryant was astounded by the student and community enthusiasm. A complete stranger, he was welcomed to the team, to the family. The magnificent Aggie Band drummed him into the fold, and he realized he had arrived in a marvelously unique setting. Accordingly, Bryant set about to do his job and build a football team.

The film explored none of this -- it simply launched right into boot-camp maltreatment that bordered on criminal, with Sgt. Barnes from Platoon calling the cadence. We saw nothing of the spirit behind the endeavor, the reason for all that work, the motivation to bring honor to the Maroon and White. We just got another bland boot-camp flick, a smattering of awkward jokes, and very little of the complete story.

I wish I could win the state lottery -- I would use the funds to finance a remake of this film and I would do it correctly the second time. Read the book, it's a great book, but don't waste your time watching this insipid version of the tale. It was nothing but the waste of a terrific opportunity to tell a great story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pun-itive Measures...
This is a non-stop pun fest.
Filled with sight-gags, puns, take-offs, wonderfully overdone japes, pokes, ribs and alliteration.
From the opening shot(s) [really] through the "Herb Jar lables" on to the crossword bit...
One finally comes to the "Solid Gold Woofer"... and the climactic "But Holmes..."
I dearly love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes it's stupid, but...
It is a very stupid movie, but it has moments of great hilarity and Cleese is in great form. The who's the real Watson scene is worth the price of the DVD alone. Holmes:One of you is an imposter! Watson:Good Lord! Is it me?

4-0 out of 5 stars Goofy, with lots of familiar faces
When Dr. Henry Gropinger (a caricature of Henry Kissinger, played by Ron Moody), has his diary stolen, causing him to be killed, the finest detectives of the world discover than the one behind it is Professor Moriarty's descendent. Who else can they call for help but the descendent of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Sherlock Holmes (John Cleese)? With the incredibly stupid Dr. William Watson (Arthur Lowe) in tow, he sets a trap that Moriarty cannot resist. Sadly, this Holmes is only a pale shadow of his illustrious grandfather, and his combination of quick-action and slow-thinking do not serve him well. [Color, released in 1977, with a running time of 56 minutes.]

OK, let's start off by saying that this movie has only the thinnest of plots, and the humor is beat-you-on-the-head dumb! But, in spite of that, it actually is a fun little flick. There's no subtlety here, but if you are willing to put your brain into neutral, you will get a kick out of it.

And, I must say, what I appreciated the most about this movie was seeing so many of my favorite British actors in one place: John Cleese (Monty Python), Arthur Lowe (Dad's Army), Joss Ackland (Lethal Weapon 2, They Do It With Mirrors), Denholm Elliott (Indian Jones and the Last Crusade), Nick Tate (Space: 1999), Josephine Tewson (Elizabeth on Keeping Appearances), Burt Kwouk (Cato on the Pink Panther movies) and Connie Booth (Fawlty Towers).

So, if you love British television, and want to see some familiar faces in a goofy, off-beat production, then this movie is for you. If you are looking for a cinematic masterpiece, then look elsewhere, this movie is definitely not for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars This might have been the end of John Cleese's career.
"The Strange Case of the End of Civilization As We Know It" is the most awful exercise with which any Python has ever been associated. Nothing funny, nothing witty, nothing satirical, no jabs at authority or culture, and no entertainment value. At least "Fawlty Towers" is ugly, nasty, disspiriting, and a celebration of rudeness for the purpose of being cruel -- which is much nicer than anything one could say about "The Strange Case . . . ." The best non-Python Cleese is "Romance with a Double Bass" with the beautiful (and almost naked) Connie Booth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Tape . . .
It is awful--I mean it. It is worse than "How To Irritate People" and before I wasted the (money) on this I thought it would be impossible for Cleese to film something worse than "Irritate". You want to see John and Connie in their finest hours together?? Buy the complete set of "Fawlty Towers." It is their finest work. ... Read more

With Moonbase Alpha about to pass close to a planet, Piri, an Eagle (small, short-range spaceship) is sent to investigate, but its strange disappearance marks the beginning of a series of mysteries, including a series of strange results from the Moonbase computer. When Commander Koenig (played by Martin Landau) meets a beautiful woman (Catherine Schell, who later played Maya!) who claims to be the servant of the Guardian of Piri, she informs him that the purpose of the Guardian is to make people "perfect." When the Guardian takes control of the Alphans, it is up to Commander Koenig to save his people from becoming mindless, and ambitionless, inhabitants of a sort of land of the lotus-eaters. 5-0 out of 5 stars This was the most thrilling SF movie till Alien 10ys later!
I was watching the Space 1999 Tv series in late 70's as my absolute favourite movie. It took 10 years for the filmmakers to make The Alien that finally beaten Space 1999, in my opinion anyway. I would love to have it in my video collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the episodes will be one hell of a collection to have.
Since I was a young child I watched Space 1999 every week until they cancelled the show. A couple of years ago they show up on Sci-fi channel and I started recording the shows then they cancelled showing the episodes. I look forward to the episodes being available to the public on VHS Tapes or DVD. One hell of a show!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope they re-release soon

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice tape
The crew of Moonbase Alpha receives a surprise when an alien spaceship enters orbit around the Moon, only to crash-land on its surface. When the alien crew is revived from their suspended animation, they find that they were bound for Earth when their computer recognized the now renegade Moon. The aliens are determined to continue on to Earth, and Commander Koenig (played by Martin Landau) realizes that the death of an alien crewmember means that one of the Alpha crew can accompany the aliens (led by Captain Zantor, played by Christopher Lee). But, one crewman, Commissioner Simmond (Roy Dotrice), decides that he *must* be that one who returns to Earth, and he will net nothing stand in his way.
[Color, originally aired in 1975 (season 1), with a running time of 60 minutes.]

As a childhood fan of the Space 1999 (both seasons), I was overjoyed to have this tape fall into my lap. J2 Communications produced the tape I have in 1990. There are no little 'extras' on the tape, but it does have the episode in a reasonable quality. I am very glad to have this tape, and highly recommend that you get it! ...

Also add to an entertaining film. ... Read more
