Here's an interesting concept. Take a director whose career is rapidly fading, give him a star whose career is rapidly fading, and stock his film with rising stars. Think you can come up with a saleable product? You can if you're Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink) and Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys). Article 99 was the last good film Sutherland made before the dry spell that ended with Dark City; Deutch is still looking for a comeback film. Sutherland is surrounded by then-rising stars who have since become household names, including Ray Liotta (fresh off the success of Goodfellas), Kathy Baker (a year before Picket Fences), Keith David (still best known for playing Childs in Carpenter's 1982 remake of The Thing), and Lynne Thigpen (who, come to think of it, still hasn't gotten the recognition she deserves). Put the lot of them in a VA hospital, as (all except David, who plays a sociopathic-but-likable Vietnam vet) they try to cut through all the red tape and just do their jobs, while the hospital's administrator (John Mahoney, now known as Frasier's dad) tries to hamstring them at every turn. It doesn't sound like a recipe for the kind of comedy Deutch is used to directing, but somehow it all works, with the doctors and the administration battling it out until things go just one step too far, as they usually do in movies. And it still could have fallen flat on its face if not for the very last scene, as the end credits begin rolling. It's a feel-good movie that doesn't allow you to feel good. Now THAT'S an accomplishment. *** 1/2
Most who have lived through those eras or who are frustrated with the lost promise- similar to a retroactive pay cut have a more precise understanding of the film. Vets of these wars & particularly those who have attempted to access the quality medical care promised them see may be able to view this film as highly accurate. The humor is ingrained in attempting to receive this retroactive benefit promise. The film's very accurate depiction & humor makes it almost sad by illustrating in view of the degradation that the Vet must encounter when trying to access their medical care, when needed. It also illustrates the low status given to the Vet in attempting to access health care. I suppose if one really wants an accurate feel for this film, they should sit in a VA Hospital clinic reception area for 6-12 hours so as to see a doctor who will refer them to another to see in 2 months, or schedule a test 4 weeks off, with instructions to return to this dr thereafter. The unknowing viewer can walk though the clinic to discover that the Vet who saw the referral doctor and had the test 2 months earlier, will in many cases meet with "lost records" & the need for a rescheduled appointment. By the time of returning to see the origianl Dr., he/ she is usually no longer on rotation at this government hospital. So the Vet must start over from scratch with a brand new dr who knows nothing of him, and can't locate the test results. Of course, by the time these records are located, any negative results have probably caused medical deterioration. Add to this the fact that the Vet's follow up appointment may very often be rescheduled up to 3 months down the road. This IS the reality, which sprouts humor to the "insider". For the young eager Dr/ resident, he too starts out highly frustrated & often must pull strings to accellerate the Vet's needed care. It's unlikely that one's VA doctor will be around throughout the Vet's entire diagnosis & treatment. So no one really works to assist the patient. This movie may be compared to "The Doctor" in view of a chronically or seriously ill patient who gets frustrated and often gives up attempting to receive the care that is not readily available. It also can be compared to the legislature's recent desire to control medical care of private patients in order to assure that those not paying are treated. I perceived the film as highly accurate in it's depiction of treating the Vet as though they were non- paying welfare recipients. In most cases, the doctors are too young to fully understand that these earlier Vets paid for their medical care in the same manner as one pays his medical insurance premium & co-pay's. The difference is that these Vets paid for their medical care by forsaking the pay they were due, and are thus, far from the Welfare spectrum. But permitting welfare recipinets to use these facilities now is another way of cheating the Vet, who now must apply for private insurance & is expected to pay the balances of bills out of pocket... someone must pay for those who expect FREE- NO PAY insurance & open- ended medical care, so the vet is financially penalized. It's not just the taxpayer now; it's the Vet... and he/ she is being cheated. Perhaps it's a film which is difficult for anyone under 40 to fully understand since many equate the Vet with the welfare patient, and view both as living off the system. The unknowing viewer may also not fully comprehend the delivery of services, which were VERY ACCURATELY deopicted in the film. To understand, they need to accompany the Vet to an appointment at a VA hospital. First of all, it takes anywhere from 1-3 months to get in. Then after a 6- 13 hour delay, sitting in reception areas and losing pay at their jobs, the vet is seen by a young new Dr. He/ she may order tests, a follow- up referral with another department Dr & then a return visit. Given the average 2-3 letters acknowledging a changed appointment due to overbooking, et al... the Vet often returns to find that the Dr. he saw is no longer at the hospital; the tests done- with no results providrd for 3-4 months are probably in his missing medical file, and the new dept dr. is unaware of the the Vet's medical history, problem or follow-up, so the dr then redoes an initial work up... Very often the Vet is disgruntled with losing 2 full days of pay and being nowhere further then when first coming in months earlier. On the positive side, the young dr if viewing this film and others of a similar nature may gain some perspective into the the film's true-to-life merits. He may also learn for the first time of these Vets having paid for their medical during their active tour while in service. I'm not a big Southerland fan, but do likr Leotta; yet the 2 did a good job in their roles here. I'd recommend the film to 40 y/o plus adults & younger people who are unaware of the promises made to the older vets. These viewers may be able to view this scenario in the same light as accessing medical care which is dictated by a corporate medical group. Perhaps those who have dealt with the frustrations of attempting to access medical care via a HMO/ PPO may have some understanding here; if they have chronic or serious medical problems/ disabilities, their insight may be greater. Yes, the film has some political overtones; but the VA Healthcare system is controlled by the government & thus politics are at the center focal point. This political influence is moving into private healthcare now, so a better under- standing may exist. In addition, anyone with a serious/ chronic medical condition has probably lived through these similar frustrations. In sum, I found the film accurate, and unfortunatley predictable for this scenario. Although it's not new, those with some level of understanding of political influences in healthcare may in fact empathize with the vets who have no other options & may then find this film a good one. ... For some reason "Meet Joe Black" has received mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers. In my opinion, this remake of the 1934 film "Death Takes a Holiday" was one of the best films I have seen in quite some time. The movie has gained a reputation for being long and drawn out because it is 3 hours long. I did not find the film to be drawn out at all, and time flew by for me when watching this film. Brad Pitt is actually a very good actor and shows it in this film. Pitt accurately portrayed how Death would react to the world around him with his endless curiousity and naive behavior. The scene where Death discovers peanut butter for the first time is priceless!! Anthony Hopkins was great as usual, and turns in another oscar worthy performance as Bill Parrish. You come to legitimately feel for his character because you know that it is only a matter of time before the inevitable is coming. The thing that impressed me most about the film, was that the romantic story between Death and Claire Forlani's character Susan is extremely well done, despite the gloom setting that Death's presence brings. I also highly recommend picking up the soundtrack to this film. The musical score used was outstanding. The only piece of advice I can give with this film, is to ignore its reputation and give it a shot. Overall, "Meet Joe Black" is a captivating and touching film with great performances given from the actors and an incredible soundtrack. A solid 5 stars...
Hopkins and Forlani are also excellent in their roles. Hopkins gives a wonderful performance as a loving father and powerful business man faced with death, but having to hide it from his family. Claire Forlani plays the part of his beautiful and intelligent daughter so well. She's constantly probing into Joe's situation to find out why he is living in her father's house meanwhile falling in love with this stranger and teaching Joe about love (something that is obviously new to him). The contrast between Pitt, the lawyer in the coffee shop and Pitt as Joe is fascinating. The guy in the coffee shop is opimistic, fun, lively and a great conversationalist. He smiles and laughs easily making Susan extremely attracted to him. Pitt as death (Joe) is quite different even though he looks the same. Joe is quiet, serious, mysterious, and somewhat clueless about people. As time goes on, Joe becomes more comfortable and Susan gets him to smile after his first kiss and he get a "week feeling" in his knees. The love scene is beautifully done and shows Susan undressing Joe. They get to the point where he can't get his shirt off all the way and he has this huge grin looking at Susan. I loved that part! There is a lot of conflict in this movie too. Many of the characters have personal issues to work out. It seems like a simple story but actually has several stories being told.

This movie is a celebration of in-your-face sight gags: a johnson caught in a zipper, a petrified dog revived by an electric jolt, a dash of "all natural" hair gel. The visual comedy assaults you, wave after wave, and never lets up. It's comedy you would expect to find in the third stall of the locker room, comedy so off-the-wall and immature you can't believe the sound of your own laughter. Matt Dillon surprised me; this actor can flat out play a humorous role. Cameron Diaz is perfect as Mary, the title character, while Ben Stiller is just. . .Ben Stiller. While THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY doesn't break new comedic ground, it darn sure enhances the genre. Granted, some of the stuff was lame, but I'm game.
Get the widescreen 2-disc director's cut, because it's loaded with special features like gag reels, behind the scenes stuff, interviews, etc. Rated R (contains language, semi-nudity, crude humor relating to sexual content, slapstick violence-- no blood and references to drug abuse) Starring Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon and Cameron Diaz
If you like what the Farrelly Brothers bring to the comic, comedy world, this movie has it. I loved the fact that they mixed up comedy and romance to make a huge hit. The pure gem of comedy, this will be the funniest rated comedy you'll come accross.

The story revolves around Brad (a.k.a. B-rad), a rich kid from Malibu, who has completely taken on the thug lifestyle. Although he's never really left Malibu and gone to the real "streets" of L.A., he still feels that he's from the hood. Brad seems to be hurting his father's campaign to become governor, so two actors are hired to scare Brad "white". What happens to Brad, the actors, and an ambitious young lady will have you rolling! Not only was Jamie Kennedy very good in his role as Brad, but I especially liked Taye Diggs' and Anthony Anderson's portrayals as actors trying to find their motivation for acting like thugs, which was very hard for the classically-trained characters. Although the critics have been somewhat harsh while reviewing this movie, I would definitely suggest it. It's a cute movie that you can see when you want to have a good laugh. See for yourself!!![.]
B-Rad ( Kennedy ) becomes the subject of a brutal joke. His father ( Ryan O'Neal ) inlists his campaign manager ( Blair Underwood ) to help him deal with his son. The problem is O'Neal's running for office and B-Rad's hip-hop antics are costing him votes. Thus, the kidnap plot of the year begins. And may I say it was a very funny and unique plot. We present Anthony Anderson and Taye Diggs ( two of the most popular black actors today ) playing actors. They know as much about the 'hood as B-Rad does so when they are hired to play gangstas and kidnap B-Rad the comedy really starts. They bring in a sistah, Shondra ( Regina Hall )to tempt B-Rad and she does just that. He ends up falling head over heels in love with her. Shondra finds herself attracted to him as well and why not? Jamie's hot whether he's white or black. I thought the transformation Anderson and Diggs did from actors to criminals was one of the funniest in the film but stands behind B-Rad hands down. Jamie rocked the house and though the film was cliched and stereotypical, you get a lot of laughs. I was hoping the film would stay original but it ended up being another Bringing Down The House, except Malibu's Most Wanted had more intelligence when it came to its audience. It didn't try to insult by having a bunch of black people do stupid things. What it did was educate in its own way showing that hip hop can truly be a culture of many flavors and can be used to bring people together. It may seem sappy but in the end you get a nice, multicultural comedy filled with interracial romance, rap stars, talking rats, bumping and grinding and all around fun. In the end B-Rad learns more about himself than he thought he would and so do we. I think this film is worth a look and believe me, I love intelligent films. This film may not be the calibur of Hamlet but it wasn't supposed to be. I think people forget that this was a COMEDY, a film to watch to have a good time. You don't always have to have a film that's socially and politically correct. I'm a black woman and nothing in this film offended me. I appreciated the effort and loved the fresh spin on how blacks and whites relate to hip hop. This may not be your cup of tea and that's fine. But as Jamie Kennedy says in the film " Don't be hatin' " which is a fine line if you think about it. Especially if you haven't given the movie a true chance. I'd just watch it all over again for Jamie if nothing else. He is so fine. Give the film a chance and draw your own conclusions.

Up to this point, his world had pretty much revolved around his camera, and a dream of using it, to get the money needed to go to photography school in a different city, so he could escape his hum-drum existence and crappy home life, were his mother's new boyfriend is trying to be his "Best Friend", and in peal advice that he doesn't want to hear (as sound and poniant as it may be). But, enter Demi Moore, a down on her luck rock singer, playing at a dive bar, with big dreams of the big times, hampered by disserting band members, a sleazy bar owner, and very little luck. And suddenly, Jon Cryer's world changes, as his infatuation grows for Demi, and he becomes obsessed with seeing her dream full filled (whether she wants to let him help her or not). We see his little world, where everything is seen from a distance, through his cameras lens, opens up, and through his struggles to help Demi, we watch him matures from a geeky kid, to a young man This film has a lot going for it, in comedy of situation, depth of character, and charmingly gratifying story, that makes this a "Must See" film, for 80's nostalgia fans, and any fan of a great comedy with heart.

The story of "My Boss's Daughter," is a simple on at most. No biggie. Tom works as a reasearcher in a publishers houserun by Jack who is known for firing people for making a bad cup of coffee. That is exactly what Tom's fellow co-worker Audrey does. Tom is very nervous about asking his boss for a promotion in the creative department, and he is also nervous about asking out his beautiful daughter and co-worker Lisa.(Played by Tara Reid who I never really liked.) Tom thinks that Lisa is asking him out when it seems that she is asking him to a party, but she really just wants him to housesit in place of her, so that she could go to a party. Jack is waiting for him at the house and tells him the rules. He also tells him how to feed his precious bird O.J. Tom says "No problem," but thinks go wrong when everybody leaves. Audrey comes by to talk to Jack and then Lisa's brother Red comes to ask Tom to give a package to T.J. The package is drugs. But then tons of other people arrive at the house including Speed and Tina. Tom is scared because when Jack left the house he said that if anything was wrong he would fire Tom and kill him. As he tries to get everybody out of the house, he runs into Lisa's boyfriend Hans, a women who thinks that Tom is her date, and is offended because she has a large headwound, and O.J. who escapes from his cage. "My Boss's Daughter," is a very funny movie that was just misunderstood. "My Boss's Daughter," got such bad box office buzz that it wasn't even previewed in advance by critics. I still stand by the theory that the reason movies that were shot down by critics do bad, were because people were told that they were bad. I think that that is the case with "My Boss's Daughter." I thought that this was a very funny piece of comedy. It was also dark, I feel. I love dark comedy. Some of my favorite dark movies are "Death to Smoochy," and "The Royal Tenenbaums." But "My Boss's Daughter," is a different work of dark comedy. It is a dark comedy disguised as a comedy. It wasn't billed as one, but I think it should be. It had comedy about death, drugs, and murderers. But I thought it was a great film and the DVD is out soon. ENJOY! Rated PG-13 for crude and sex-related humor, drug content and language.
There was no laughter coming from me for the entire 101 minutes I watched this movie...For a movie that is supposed to be "absolutely hilarious"...I would say that that is pretty bad. The back of the DVD says that "you will laugh your ass off"...the only thing my ass was doing was developing a cramp from sitting on it for sooooo long... Please do not waste your money or time with this one...use it for something with some cinematic quality...such as MYSTIC RIVER!

The DVD has an o.k. audio commentary from the director and a few trailers as extras. This film is a must have for fans of Pacino. This is not your typical courtroom movie and will leave you with lots to think about. Viewers have the choice to see the film in either the widescreen or pan and scan formats. Recommended
The origins of Al Pacino's over the top acting style has to be traced to this film, especially in the court room scene. Another great line in his speech has to be "The DA is not going to get him,

If this film had been shorter, stuck with the original storyline, hadn't smushed the moral in our face, or had had less of Little Cindy Lou Who (I couldn't help but think in one scene, "Oh my god she's going to sing isn't she?") it could have been better. Otherwise, it really just fails as a movie. I'll take the original animated short with Boris Karloff any Christmas.

Anyway I do suggest you watch this provided you aren't one of those affor mentioned people that freak out over every little thing. I do NOT reccomend the Cat in the Hat movie. I thought that movie seemed too much like Austin Powers in a cat suit to tell the truth,
So this isn't exactly the same storyline as the one penned by the good doctor himself. But it is very close, with some details added in to give adults a few more chuckles. And if you like it for nothing else, you will love the fantasy world created by some outstanding set and costume design; terrific old and new music; and vivid special effects. Soon after, Susanna starts to wonder if she's indeed crazy or if she's turning crazy by being there. The doctors at Claymoore, Melvin (Jeffrey Tambor) and Dr. Wick (Vanessa Grave) seem to think she's mentally ill, while her boyfriend Toby (Jared Leto) disagrees. Susanna has to deal with the situation, trying not to spiral into insanity, but at the same time finding a substitute for a home amongst this group of rejects. As for the acting, it is solid all across the board. Ryder does a convincing job as the lead character and all of the other actresses shine in their roles, especially Murphy, but this is Jolie's film. She steals almost every scene she's in, from the distressed crying on one of her downs, to frighteningly mad outbursts, to maniac lunacy. She earned a well deserve Oscar for her supporting role. The director, James Mangold, has also helmed films like Cop Land (1997, with Sylvester Stallone, Robert DeNiro and Harvey Keitel), Kate & Leopold (2001, with Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan) and Identity (2003, with John Cusack, Ray Liotta and Amanda Peet).
