5-0 out of 5 stars First-Rate Adaption
This is a very good interpretation of the Scott Turow book. 'Burden of Proof' has always been my favorite work from this author. This time Turow makes a lead character out of a terrific supporting character from the previous book ('Presumed Innocent'), the elegant and cunning defense lawyer Sandy Stern. It has a fairly complicated plot which must be handled judiciously in a movie to be understandable, and this movie does it well. The casting is top-notch, especially for Stern and his brother-in-law, who is under federal indictment. This is definitely worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly entertaining
At first glance this looks like a vehicle for between work actors. You spend the first few minutes saying where have I seen that person before. Then all of a sudden you are into the story. You say "Oh yeah I have seen that formula." They give you enough overt clues to predict ahead of time what is going to happen. Then somewhere along the line the actors melt out and the characters are real. Every so often they throw in a ringer or a herring. And just as you figure it out "you are wrong!"

The whole experience is over too soon and your are left thinking what could of happened "if only." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest satires I've ever seen
If you want to see one of the best, maybe the best, satire on the media (maybe topping even "Network"?), then this movie is for you. Don't miss it. I swear, a number of times I laughed so hard I cried.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done satire. Intelligent and engaging.
Kingsly and Byrne are excellent in this biting satire that often turns to black comedy in an excellent commentary on modern high-powered wheeling and dealing in the corporate world. Twists and turns galore in a tightly woven plot that promises and delivers surprise after surprise in a wonderfuly written plot. Equally engaging is the sub-plot of Mr. and Mrs. anyone caught up in the aftermath of the duel between two media mogules (hence the title).

An intelligent and engaging well writen movie for those who like to think about and be caught up in their entertainment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Absurd but delightful cmic fantasy
Brook Shields plays newspaper reporter Brenda Starr, the glamorous heroine of a strip cartoon drawn by a slightly wet but amiable artist, who somehow manages to draw himself into the strip and finds himself sharing her adventures as they try to find a missing professor who has developed a secret formula to replace petrol and who is also being pursued by various baddies (well, something like that anyway). The artist naturally has a crush on the glamorous Brenda, but romantic compications occur when gorgeous Brazilian aristocrat Basil St. John (Timothy Dalton in tight black trousers and an eyepatch,oh crikey, I'm drooling again)turns up, he's also after the formula, I think. Look, I've watched this film three times now and I still don't really understand the plot, but who cares. It's a lot of fun anyway, and with Brook Shields in tight skirts and Timothy Dalton in tight trousers it has something to please everyone. True, there is a rather long bit in the middle of the film where Dalton isn't around, but you can't have everything, and the rest of the time, he's there, and absolutely divine. Don't worry about the baffling plot and crazy characters, just enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Styleish.
I love all the pretty outfits that Brooke Shields wore in the Brenda StarrVideo. I think that Brooke is one terrific actress as well as supermodel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny movie
Yes, I admit, I bought this movie because Timothy Dalton stars in it. And it does not disappoint. It is a movie with lots of humour and not to be taken too seriously. Just sit back and enyoy the humour. It has no pretensions of deep human emotions or of world philosophy and that is what makes it so enjoyable.

2-0 out of 5 stars So Many Pizza Hut Plugs in This One It'll Make You Dizzy
We know of Timothy Dalton because we shamefully watched all of the James Bond movies, happening to see the one or two Dalton starred in. (Now, a man unleashes a wet, sickly cough, bracing himself on kitchen counter for support). "Brenda Starr" is one of the worst movies ever. What can account for this? Try one too many liberal arts graduates shuffling around under dim lighting in an empty warehouse, while yet another chain smoker coughs horribly into a tissue. It all comes up bloody in the end. At last! Brooke Shields is no longer making films!

5-0 out of 5 stars It has lovely Brooke in it !! Of *course* we'll watch her !
Hi ... I am One Of Those Guys who, in His Adolescence, was so down on _me_ that it was not until into my Adulthood that I actually began **really** taking notice of those comely yeomen strutting their lovely posteriors in their micro-minis all up and down the Enterprise ... so, what's my point ?? Simply this: Brooke Shields is a sight for sore eyes no matter HOW old a man is when he finally learns it's okay to LIKE himself AND gawk at very beautiful girls. That is, apart from BRENDA STARR being, as I understand my elders, a pretty faithful adherence to the Heroine of so many young ladies in the fifties; lush with romance, comedy, bright colors and adventure; and a diverting and entertaining indulgence absent of foul speech which never takes itself *too* seriously -- there is, in every frame, our Brooke, our Heroine, Gorgeous Eye Candy for the Age of Cable and Color TV, most splendidly attired, for several delicious minutes at least, in a most eye-pleasing, fetching Barnum and Bailey style "costume" [ heh heh ]. Or, in the immortal words of my pal, Homer: "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Brooke _Shields_." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Witty HELLBOY is fun, rollicking adventure
Based on the Dark Horse comic, HELLBOY is probably one of the more unusual superhero films around today. In a prologue set in World War II, the U.S. Army foils a (...) plot to open an other dimensional portal and unleash monster fiends upon the world. However, an infant demon slips through into our world. Taking pity on him, government scientist Professor Broom raises the tyke as his own. Sixty years later, we find the demon all grown-up and fighting paranormal menaces for a secret U.S. government agency. However, Hellboy finds himself battling not only the evils of his past, but his own feelings for Liz Sherman, a fellow freak with pyrotechnic powers.

Ron Perlman is perfectly cast as the demon with a blue-collar attitude towards his job. In many ways, he comes across as your local garbage man or plumber with his world-weary view towards the many monsters he faces. His snappy comebacks are especially amusing. Perlman's costume and make-up also reinforce the image with his floppy raincoat and filed-down horns, which resemble goggles more than anything. Selma Blair is touching as Liz Sherman, the somewhat sullen object of Hellboy's affections, while John Hurt brings an added amount of warmth as the elder Professor Broom. Rupert Evans is solid as the young FBI agent who is introduced into Hellboy's world. As the evil Rasputin, Karel Rodin underplays the part, making him a somewhat bland bad guy. Doug Jones, with the voice of David Hyde Pierce, makes the fish-man Abe Sapien a truly fun creation. Lending solid support is Jeffrey Tambor as Hellboy's antagonistic boss. Director Guillermo del Toro does a wonderful job keeping the film at such a brisk pace that we easily get swept up in the story.

Despite having a lower budget than most films of its type, the special effects are definitely better than average with snaky haired monsters providing menace and a complaining zombie half-corpse providing laughs. HELLBOY is a fast-paced, fun film that definitely will draw in fans of the cult comic, while the irreverent attitude will appeal to action fans in general. It doesn't matter if you're familiar to the comic or not, this film is definitely a enjoyable time, and as such, is one that I definitely recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Casting
One of the better Marvel Comic / Movie crossovers of late with a powerhouse performance by Ron Perlman in the title role, who delivers the character which such panache, you can forgive the other disappointing aspects of the movie. A typical pulp storyline finds the birth of Hellboy by a Nazi ritual interuppted by well to do professor figure who he comes to know as father, and then we are moved hence 60 odd years. Hellboy is now on our side thankfully, but we are then only to find (shock horror) that the original protagonists have re-emerged to finish their aim of World destruction yada yada yada. Top heavy on the SfX as you would expect, but the success lies in the movies persistent, and almost self effacing script; that refuses to try and overlay a topical, or politically correct message, as so many other movies of the genre have in the past. The film seems to know it's implausible and often silly beyond belief, but the acting is perfectly executed. Any moments of stale screen time are soon enlivened with some beautifully delivered lines, again by Perlman, who almost single handedly carries the whole picture. A lot of fun here for young and old, and should appeal to those outside the 14-22 demographic for whom it seems to have been intended for by the director. Your intellect won't be tested too much, but if you know that going in, you should enjoy this movie. Deserves 3.5 stars, but not quite 4.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stylish fun
"There is a place, a dark place, where ancient evil slumbers, waiting to be awakened," a character warns in the first minutes of "Hellboy." And if you think that ancient evil is going to continue slumbering through a film with a title like "Hellboy," you must be dreaming. Awaken it does -- on two fairly spectacular occasions -- and to defeat it, the world must call upon a guy who could squash Spider-Man with one sweep of his rock-hard right hand, a scarlet-skinned avenger who makes the Hulk look not-so-incredible.

Hellboy, as readers of the Dark Horse comic know, is a half-man, half-demon and, as played by Ron Perlman, he's a whole lotta fun to hang around with. Although he's got brute strength to spare, his fireproof hide hides a tender side: He vainly tries to sand down the pair of horns that keep threatening to sprout out of his broad forehead, he consumes basins of chili and mini-mountains of nachos in one sitting, and he enjoys the company of ... kittens.

The dream project of the gifted Mexican screenwriter and director Guillermo del Toro ("Mimic," "Blade II"), "Hellboy" initially appears to be a flashy mishmash of elements lifted from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "X-Men," "The Matrix" and other fantasies. But stick with it. Somehow del Toro gives the movie unexpected rhythm and spirit; don't be surprised if you get caught up in this weirdly affecting tale about a superhero bedeviled by his need for acceptance and companionship.

The screenplay by del Toro begins in 1944, as the Nazis and the diabolical Grigori Rasputin (yes, the Mad Monk himself) combine science and black magic to open a portal to Hell. The results are dire for all concerned, and in the midst of the mess a miniature red menace manages to cross over from the dark side.

Adopted by paranormal expert Professor Broom (John Hurt), the little creature grows up to be Hellboy, the secret weapon of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, an organization dedicated to stamping out monsters whenever and wherever they appear. They're a low-profile bunch. Instead of the supersonic jet the X-Men travel around in, the BPRD team disguises itself as a band of trashmen.

In the rare moments when he's not fending off attacks by the sinister forces of Rasputin (Karel Roden), Hellboy attempts to deal with new BPRD trainee John Myers (British TV star Rupert Evans), who has managed to win the trust of Hellboy's dreamgirl, Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), a sullen soul cursed with pyrokinesis: Whenever her temper flares, everything goes up in flames. The bizarre love triangle is delightfully well-played, with Hellboy fuming and fussing as he stalks John and Liz. "When am I ever gonna get a girl?" Hellboy complains. "I drive around in a garbage truck."

"Hellboy" also introduces Abe Sapien, an intellectually inclined gill-man/psychic who speaks with the voice of David Hyde Pierce; an undead assassin with a horribly mutilated body, veins full of dust and a clockwork heart that keeps him running; and Sammael, a hell-hound capable of resurrecting itself (or quickly reproducing copies of itself) each time it seems to be near death. Avid readers of the comics will be pleased to know creator Mike Mignola served as a visual consultant here, and he's at least partially responsible for the film's sleek, dark, glossy/grungy look.

Certainly not everything works as well as it should. The humor, which often gives scenes a welcome edge, sometimes gets perilously close to the thudding one-liners that eventually sent Arnold Schwarzenegger into exile in the California governor's mansion. An insufferable bureaucrat (Jeffrey Tambor) who abruptly disappears from the storyline -- a plot point that's ridiculed during the end credits -- is an extraneous annoyance that slows down the action and should have been cut before shooting began.

But for every little flaw or misstep, "Hellboy" manages to come up with something unexpectedly off-the-wall to compensate for it, such as the inclusion of 1940s chanteuse Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" on the soundtrack, or a fistfight that somehow continues, even as the participants are hurtling down an elevator shaft.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just to let you know
A 3-disc edition of HellBoy is coming out in November. It'll have 15 minutes added into the film, a new commentary track, and a few other extra features and bonuses. So you might want to wait on getting this if you'd rather get the full version. Sheesh, when are studios going to quit doing this? It's bad enough there're going to be 4+ other releases of Kill Bill...

5-0 out of 5 stars Hellboy
As far as Comic book movies go, this was extremely well done. Del Toro did a marvelous job in bringing this to the big screen. Ron Pearlman was superb in the title role as Hellboy, just as Michael Keaton was to Batman. The plot was great, taken right from one of Mike Mignola's stories. This is pure escapism at it's best (as all comic book movies are). Just enjoy it for what it is. If you want to go further, just head to Borders and read a copy of any of Mike Mignola's Hellboy graphic novels for free (there are about 6 available). In closing, I really enjoyed the film and will buy the DVD, although I'm hoping for a directors cut extended version (I'm hoping they'll do one). Like I said, just enjoy it folks! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute!
Mr. Mom stars Michael Keaton as a guy who loses his job and is having trouble finding a new job but his wife played by Terri Garr finds a job and he has to stay home and take care of the kids and do the housework etc, it is a cute movie with some funny and charming scenes and Michael Keaton and Terri Garr are both good and the kids are cute. I give it 3 stars because even though it's a cute movie it's a little dated and it's not as cute as some other similar movies but I still think it's worth watching at least once so I recommend renting this and then seeing if you like it enough to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keaton is masterful
After he burst off the screen in Night Shift, Michael Keaton was given his first leading role in this film. He plays Jack Butler who designs and builds cars for a big Detroit auto maker. Due to cutbacks, he is laid off from his job. His wife, played by Teri Garr, has been a housewife to their three kids and hasn't worked in years. Jack and her make a bet as to who will get a job first. Of she does and Jack is forced to stay at home and watch the kids. He obviously has no idea how tough the job is and the film goes through his transformation from an inept house dad to a growing into the role. Some hilarious scenes include a trip to the supermarket gone awry, Jack's addiction to soap operas and his confrontations with his wife's smug boss played with oily charm by Martin Mull. Teri Garr is very funny as is Ann Jillian as her best friend. The real star is of course Mr. Keaton, who shows he cannot only be funny, but touching and caring. a first rate performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Family Film
Mr Mom is a delightful family movie reversing parental roles where the man works and makes money and the woman stays at home and raises children. It all starts when Jack loses his job at a Michigan car plant caused by a shrewd accounting, who wants to improve financials by downsize personnel. The movie protrays the accountant as dishonest, cheap negotiator; who shifts blame by using a job enticement to get Jack too appear before a corporate board too take blame for losses. The accountant tries to manipulate Jack into taking responsibility for a sudden drop in profits and increases in costs, in Jack's old division. The Accountant wants Jack and his friends too confess and get their jobs back, 1/2 price. Jack confronts senior management and reminds them, he doesn't work for the company, anymore. The mood shifts and the accountant trys to pursued Jack too confess of siphoning funds for his own purposes; Jack wants his job back, however, he knows the truth is more important, so he stands up to the accountant and tells management, when he was there, costs were down and profits up. The movie pokes fun at the company's senior management attempts too creating short term profit gains by layoff staff and ignoring the effectiveness of middle manager, in particular Jack to keep costs down and production up. Its difficult to know, how Jack really helped the company. The Rocky analogy was a perfect setup for "Gung Ho". Revelation of Jack's skill will be discovered in "Gung Ho".
Jack's wife Caroline uses her connections too get a job working for an advertising firm tasked with creating an advertising campaign for Schooner tuna. Caroline brings Schooner back to selling "Americanism", "we at schooner tuna care", and "during this period of economic crisis, Schooner will drop the price of each can of tuna, 50 cents". Caroline is smart, if you want to move inventory, drop price; profit margins are less but product starts to sell, the cost of good don't increase stablizing against further losses, sales increase, and inventory decreases. I would say Caroline was pretty smart, maybe much smarter than Jack.
Caroline experiences the corporate climb, sexual harshment, hardline politics, long work days, and starts missing experiences with her children. Jack tells her not to forget what is most important. Jack experience mid-life crisis, throws a race against Carolines boss, drinks too much, gambles with his new female friends, gets confused while multitasking (clothes, TV maintanence, changing diapers, school dropoffs, and Soap operas). Jack becomes Rocky, cleans up his home, task command of his life, and makes a come back.
The movie is very delightful. The cast bringing humor, empathy, and friendship to the big screen.

If you don't own this movie, get it. It is a classic. The characters are believable and real and the comedy is perfectly blended between real-life/palusible situations and that intanglible movie quality that makes movies like this great. Kenny and Alex remind me...of me...when I was their age. Jack Butler, Carolyn Butler, Ron Richardson, Joan...all fantanstic characters. In my opinion, movies of the 1980's (character/plot driven movies) don't get any better than this. My one critique is that the male stripper scense seem a little out of place. Yum Yum Tuna Bits! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Atrocious
This movie is absolutely awful. Good lord. How do these scripts get MADE INTO FILM? An absolute waste of time, film, and money. Oh, so you mean Moranis got picked on by Arnold when they were kids, but now they're older, and he's not so bad a guy, but Moranis is still spooked? Oh, and Moranis' son is now picking on Arnold's son? Oh, brilliant! Greenlight! COME ON! THIS IS FILTH!

3-0 out of 5 stars The good and the bad
The bad guy is played wisely by a good actor; the good is played by an imitation of an actor. I don't think the capture of Eichmann in '61 was a party. Howard plays like it was one. Could have been Dean Martin instead, result would have been the same. Otherwise, interesting tv movie. Not more than that.

4-0 out of 5 stars An important event in our history chronicled.
Any time you get the opportunity to see Robert Duvall work, you should take it. When the pot is sweetened by the chance to learn a little (or a lot) about an important historical event, then it's a no-brainer.

A far more carefully crafted story line distinguishes this film from the 1961 'Operation Eichmann'. The source of this film is the book, "Eichmann in my Hands", by Massad agent Peter Malkin, the primary Israeli Agent involved in Eichmann's capture in Buenos Aires.

The film is presented pretty much from the point-of-view of Malkin, played superbly by Arliss Howard, an actor who's career to date is papered with non-distinguishable work in non-descript films. His portrayal here is right on target. There is a nice turn as well by Jeffrey Tambor, a wonderful comedic actor, here cast completely against type in a serious role.

Much is the time when TV has been dismissed as a learning medium. Thankfully, made for TV movies like 'The Man Who Captured Eichmann" go far to dismiss that notion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny!!!
I was pleasantly surprised by "Malibu's Most Wanted"! It actually turned out to be a very funny movie. I was a little skeptical at first, but I can't deny that there were moments where I was laughing very hard.

The story revolves around Brad (a.k.a. B-rad), a rich kid from Malibu, who has completely taken on the thug lifestyle. Although he's never really left Malibu and gone to the real "streets" of L.A., he still feels that he's from the hood. Brad seems to be hurting his father's campaign to become governor, so two actors are hired to scare Brad "white". What happens to Brad, the actors, and an ambitious young lady will have you rolling!

Not only was Jamie Kennedy very good in his role as Brad, but I especially liked Taye Diggs' and Anthony Anderson's portrayals as actors trying to find their motivation for acting like thugs, which was very hard for the classically-trained characters.

Although the critics have been somewhat harsh while reviewing this movie, I would definitely suggest it. It's a cute movie that you can see when you want to have a good laugh. See for yourself!!![.]

4-0 out of 5 stars This Sistah Loves Jamie Kennedy!
Jamie Kennedy is the bomb! Malibu's Most Wanted could have used some work but Kennedy plays the lead character with style and keeps you laughing when the film gets its worse. I've always liked Jamie since Scream because of his unique comedic style. He never ceases to amaze. In Malibu's Most Wanted Jamie gives the audience a lot to think about AND laugh at.

B-Rad ( Kennedy ) becomes the subject of a brutal joke. His father ( Ryan O'Neal ) inlists his campaign manager ( Blair Underwood ) to help him deal with his son. The problem is O'Neal's running for office and B-Rad's hip-hop antics are costing him votes. Thus, the kidnap plot of the year begins. And may I say it was a very funny and unique plot. We present Anthony Anderson and Taye Diggs ( two of the most popular black actors today ) playing actors. They know as much about the 'hood as B-Rad does so when they are hired to play gangstas and kidnap B-Rad the comedy really starts. They bring in a sistah, Shondra ( Regina Hall )to tempt B-Rad and she does just that. He ends up falling head over heels in love with her. Shondra finds herself attracted to him as well and why not? Jamie's hot whether he's white or black. I thought the transformation Anderson and Diggs did from actors to criminals was one of the funniest in the film but stands behind B-Rad hands down. Jamie rocked the house and though the film was cliched and stereotypical, you get a lot of laughs. I was hoping the film would stay original but it ended up being another Bringing Down The House, except Malibu's Most Wanted had more intelligence when it came to its audience. It didn't try to insult by having a bunch of black people do stupid things. What it did was educate in its own way showing that hip hop can truly be a culture of many flavors and can be used to bring people together. It may seem sappy but in the end you get a nice, multicultural comedy filled with interracial romance, rap stars, talking rats, bumping and grinding and all around fun. In the end B-Rad learns more about himself than he thought he would and so do we.

I think this film is worth a look and believe me, I love intelligent films. This film may not be the calibur of Hamlet but it wasn't supposed to be. I think people forget that this was a COMEDY, a film to watch to have a good time. You don't always have to have a film that's socially and politically correct. I'm a black woman and nothing in this film offended me. I appreciated the effort and loved the fresh spin on how blacks and whites relate to hip hop. This may not be your cup of tea and that's fine. But as Jamie Kennedy says in the film " Don't be hatin' " which is a fine line if you think about it. Especially if you haven't given the movie a true chance. I'd just watch it all over again for Jamie if nothing else. He is so fine. Give the film a chance and draw your own conclusions.

Talk about taking a stereotype to the extreme! And someone please tell Anthony Anderson he cannot act is even less funny. Go away please.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just barely three stars
Why would I watch a film like this? Well I have a teenage son and he and his friends think it's a crack up and have watched it many times over. I try and keep abreast on what they watch and like and so I gladly sat through this one twice.
I wouldn't own it, but my kids do and it's not all that bad of a flick. It's mostly a coming of age morality tale and the message it sends is mostly good and wholesome. It's probably not a good movie for the real young, but for most teens it's got nothing too bad and it's entertaining enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is sensual and hot
this is a great story line. First you think Michael Madsen is a murder and a bad guy. Then you end up liking him. He is, - what can I say......? A HE-MAN! He is masculin and he is charming.
Helen Slater is a very good actress. Probably one of the best.
I would like to recommend this film to all women and perhaps to a few men!?

2-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre direct-to-TV thriller.
"A house in the hills" is a quite poor b-thriller shot in Luxenburg to be shown directly on TV. Director Wiederhorn makes an acceptable job creating an suspense atmosphere, but storyline is so poor that often the only aspect that keeps the film working are the performances by Michael Madsen, an usual face in this type of movies, and a Helen Slater trying to get rid of her earlier comedy image. Personally, the only thing that kept me watching was a couple of scenes where Slater appears nude. The rest is not so bad, but certainly it is nothing we have not seen before a thousand times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saturday the 14th
Unlike some of extrodinarily expensive spoofs of today that ganish very few to no laughs, and can only be seen by (and basically understood by) the adult population, this movie was really enjoyable. Sure the movie may look like a low budget never was, but it was one of the more honest movies of its day. This movie was designed to be fun (even suitable for the whole family), not to make millions and bore the audience with site gags and sexually lude or crude jokes (that only the person who wrote the movie understands) that have been used time and time again. I think that the actors played their parts very well, and some of the monster designs were amusing. People who only like movies with big budget special effects, and hughely popular stars will probably not enjoy this movie. But for someone who just wants an honest movie with laugh and (believe it or not) an understandable (yet silly) plot will enjoy this movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia? Not bloody likely.
Saturday the 14th (Howard R. Cohen, 1981)

Veteran Hollywood screenwriter Howard Cohen (Deathstalker, Stryker, Vampire Nurses, and-- I'm not kidding-- Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealers) tookhis first whack at directing with this insanely silly send-up of seventies horror flicks. How a guy who writes B-grade fantasy and softcore flicks managed to assemble the cast he got for this film is beyond me, but to his credit, the cast did manage to pull off something that didn't completely wreck their careers.

Waldemar (veteran character actor Jeffrey Tambor, in his second big-screen role) and Yolanda (the late Nancy Andrews, in her last film role) are very interested in buying a dilapidated old house. Problem is, its owner has just died and left it, in his will, to an all-American family: father John (Richard Benjamin, recently seen in the TNT production of The Goodbye Girl), mother Mary (seventies film and TV staple Paula Prentiss), nubile daughter Debbie (Kari Michaelsen of Gimme a Break!), and credulous kid brother Billy (Kevin Brando, for a while the voice of Charlie Brown). Billy finds the book Waldemar and Yolanda are after, opens and reads it, and lets out all manner of evil creatures, making no one happy. John hires an exterminator to get rid of some pests, and finds himself stuck with Van Helsing (the late, great Severn Darden), an exterminator who is more than he appears to be...

yeah, okay, it's funny. Kind of. In the same incredibly stupid way that Dark Star is funny, but without the ability and talent both in front of and behind the camera to be found in Dark Star. (And without the beach ball with claws, an unforgivable omission.) Kari Michaelsen's obligatory "nubile daughter taking a bath" scene is worth the price of admission, if you're into that sort of thing, and there are a few chuckles here and there. But for the most part, it kicked my nostalgia trip between the legs a few times. This one just plain doesn't hold up well, and I wonder what I was thinking back in the day when I watched it about a hundred times on HBO. (No, I know what I was thinking. Kari Michaelsen taking a bath.) **

4-0 out of 5 stars I Hope the DVD is Available in Widescreen!
I saw Sautrday the 14th when I was a teen, I'm not sure though if I saw it in a movie theater or on cable on a movie channel. This was a funny movie that spoofed horror movies. Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss who are married in real life play a couple who move with their son Billy and daughter Debbie into a haunted house. The movie also stars Jeffrey Tambor (Hill Street Blues) as a vampire and Kari Michaelson as Debbie. Kari is best known for playing Katie in the Nell Carter sitcom Gimme a Break. I would like to have this movie on DVD but there isn't really any info on if it's available in widescreen, I would hate to buy it and find out it's an edited pan and scan DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a great movie
I first watched this movie when i was about 5. My mom taped it and i have shown it to everyone. I found the movie hilarious. The parents are so dumb to mistake bats for owls. I love it when the dad finds eyeballs in his coffee. The movie just makes fun of horror movies. Niave people inherit a house with a cursed book which releases monsters into the house to destroy the world. It is very entertaining and you will definitely laugh somewhere in the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars War! Famine! Hate! -- Those we've got...
Not scary at all, but quite fun, Saturday the 14th includes ALL the cliches, from the family (a banal, witty father, an equally banal Mrs. Cleaver mother, a cute teenaged daughter who is just destined for mauling, and a super-smart 10-year-old son) to their newly inherited "house with a curse". The house is as much fun to watch as the characters living in it, with moving-eye portraits, sentient (and carnivorous) bookcases, candles that mysteriously light themselves when light switches are thrown, and a Dark-Shadows-meets-Brady-Bunch decorating scheme.

A pair of gothy-looking married vampires are trying desperately to get into the house to retrieve a book, which the boy inadvertently opens to release many evil things into the world. A nutcase exterminator (hired to get bats out of the belfry) seeks to find the book as well, and to foil the vampires. Somewhere along the way there's a house-warming party with a houseful of detestable guests (and the daughter wears a VERY 80s Gunne Sax dress, a cute touch), most of whom deserve everything that happens to them.

The monsters are of the latex suit variety and there's mild violence, but nothing here is meant to terrify. It is a parody, short and sweet, with many fun little comedic touches (the TV *only* gets "The Twilight Zone"). Everything you think will happen does happen, right down to the bathtub scene with the teenaged daughter. The acting isn't fabulous, but the casting is good. I'm still trying to figure out if that pizza delivery boy is played by Adam Sandler in a pseudonym. Definitely this is a fun movie to have, and I've already worn out my VHS edition, which is why I've gotten a DVD edition. Incidentally, the DVD includes a few little goodies -- bios of some of the actors and staff (the producer's bio is a hoot -- it's HUMONGOUS), and trailers of various movies the same studio has done including this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The movie was good, it's not what people expect from Murphy.
I really liked this movie. It was funny and yet different considering what people usually expect from Eddie Murphy. He was not rude or used a lot of bad language. It shows that he is a very versatile actor. He can do good roles an roles where he hast to be the crudest person on earth. Anyway, I thought that having the animals really talking and their lips were in sinck with thier voices was a job well-done. Some of the actors that you think would never be good as a voice were pretty funny. John Legazamo was good as one of the rats. The drinking monkey was also hilarious. Well, I can say nothing but good for this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars vastly superior to the sequel, IMHO
Like a lot of people who believe themselves to be worldly, I put my little barriers up when I encounter a film like "Dr. Dolittle". When you think of yourself as a sophisticate, it's hard to reach the child within. You hope the kid left long ago.

The truth is that few people grow up entirely. Halfway through this movie, I threw in the towel and decided to admit I was enjoying this adolescent gem. It's infectious.

Eddie Murphy's Dr. Dolittle is not recognizable as the character in the Hugh Loftis book. He's been totally updated. The only element left from the novel is Dolittle's ability to talk to animals. He understands them. They converse. Thankfully they do not sing, as they did in the dreadful Rex Harrison musical comedy thirty years ago. That film lost a fortune for Fox Studio. At this late date, Mr. Murphy and friends seem to have recovered its money.

It may seem like a gift to be able to communicate with guinea pigs, owls, dogs, pigs, pigeons and other creatures. This gift could be a one-way ticket to the funny farm, which is the problem Dolittle faces.

One of the best things about "Dr. Dolittle" is that it's short. The producers were wise enough to get in and out before the audience realized this was basically a one joke, one special effect story.

Murphy seems to have undergone a personal transformation in the last few years. Now he is completely at ease and in control in gentle comedies like this and "The Nutty Professor", just as he was in the sexy and crime-driven vehicles that made him a movie star in the 1980s.

It was bathroom humor that earned this picture a PG-13 rating. It may have deserved it, but kids seem to learn this stuff younger these days. Maybe they are just more open than my generation was. This touch of crudeness helps "Dr. Dolittle" to work. Full of smart remarks, these animals are survivors. They are also endearing. They assure that the movie never becomes sickeningly sweet. Besides, nobody expects Eddie Murphy to give up his bad boy image completely.

One element I found interesting is that, despite all the advances in digital special effects, when you see a lot of animals talking on screen, it doesn't look any more real than it did in the days of Francis the Talking Mule. It just cost ten times as much to create the effect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud comedy.
Dr. John Dolittle (Eddie Murphy) has the so called "perfect life", a beautiful wife, two loving daughters and a career that could not be better. All that changes one night when he nearly hits a dog with his car. As he is leaving, the dog calls him a bonehead then runs off. From that day on his childhood ability to communicate with animals is back. Soon, animals are showing up at his home to get help. His colleagues suspect he's going crazy and many decisions still have to be made regarding the sale of the clinic. Just as everything is about to fall apart, a circus tiger falls seriously ill and it's John's turn to prove to everyone that he's not crazy.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Repeats
This is a movie I bought first, primarily for the kids because of the reviews. No one ever asked to watch it a second time. I say this because one of my kids was watching the Lion King last night, for the umpteenth time. So yes, I agree that eddie murphy impressed me again with his talent... but it just didn't grab my kids, 3 boys and 2 girls. I had to give it a good rating of 3 rather than a 2 to encourage the making of good movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's Richard Pryor when we need him?
eddie murphy is a comical guy, but is he really the right guy to play in something as stupid as this? Of course, who is the right guy for it? One of the questions i can't stand to think about in this movie, is how Dolittle hears the animals speak, but their lips move and nobody notices. Can't they connect the dots? Obviously not. And obviously, the filmmakers couldn't either. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars JIM CARREY was Born to Play THE GRINCH!
I just want to say THE GRINCH with JIM CARREY is one awesome Holiday movie! I am 24 years old and I really dig this movie. I saw this movie at the show last Christmas, and I had a blast watching it. It is very close to the DR. SEUSS book and animated movie but being a motion picture the movie has a lot more detail on the story which gives the story of The Grinch a whole new life. The DVD will be released this NOVEMBER and you can pre-order it here on AMAZON.com. The DVD has so many special features like - Sing-Along songs, Read-Along songs, DVD ROM content such as - Add a Grinch to your own photograph, screen savers, games, recipes, the Music Video of Faith Hill's "WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS", a Whoville section which includes Who School, Jim Carrey make up application, set decorations, visual effects, and a few more surprises such as a Spotlight on location, Deleted scenes, and Outtakes. Buy this DVD it is a great flick to add to your Holiday Movie Collection! You can also check out the WIDESCREEN version DVD, this one is for the FULL SCREEN version of The Grinch.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOW THE GRINCH STOLE THE BOX OFFICE
BASED on the classic Dr. Seuss tale of "HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS", THE GRINCH not only proved the durability of the multi-talented JIM CARREY (comedies, dramas, now family films), but also proved that classic stories can be modernized and still be just as enjoyable.

Not only is the unique element of the story still there, but the silver screened edition adds more plot on many subjects. Most importantly - the Grinch's origin that explains his hatred and disgust for the Whos and their beloved holiday. Some will argue that this either perverts a classic or dulls it's shine. Not at all, and after seeing the movie you'll realize that it is in no way possible.

The movie can't tarnish that eternal shine, and really can only make the old classic even more popular than it already is. Here are some facts and comparisons:

Some say: "If you can't stick to the classic's criteria, there shouldn't be an updated version."

I say: "The classic is a 2 minute read and a 30 minute cartoon. There's no such thing as adjusting a 30 minute cartoon's subject matter into that of a required (atleast) 90 minute film. The updated version actually contains all that is in the cartoon and book, adding the rest was simply needed. Could you imagine stretching out 30 minutes of material into 90 minutes?! Anyways, THE GRINCH is BASED on the classic childrens book. B A S E D."

Some say: "I went to THE GRINCH in hopes of seeing something alot more. That movie is basically the Grinch stealing Christmas, where's the rest? Surely the story needed something different!"

I say: "Saying you knew the Grinch would steal Christmas and that you expected more is like saying you went to TITANIC in hopes of the true story having a manipulative-movie-happy-ending where the boat doesn't sink. Too bad because besides the added origin/reasoning, great make-up (Oscar winning), excellent design and portrayal of the Whos and their town (Oscar nominated Art Direction)...you also get JIM CARREY who gives another Oscar-snubbed performance as the Grinch. Not only does CARREY go through with hours and hours of make-up each day to get the job done, he also makes the Grinch his own. He keeps the tone and attitude of the classic character solid while adding humor, plenty of facial expressions he could do without make-up, and most of all... ironically likeable."

Some say: "Where's the rhyming and Seuss-like feel? The movie had dialouge and singing...but that dialouge should be in rhyme!"

I say: "Pleeeeaaassseee!! That's the one thing this movie definetely did not need and wisely kept out! Constant Seuss rhymes would only bore the adults of the FAMILY MOVIE AUDIENCE much like Disney movie songs and Barney sing-a-longs. A little rhyming is allright, a whole 90 minutes..."

Some say: "Many parts of THE GRINCH are not for children audiences! Kissing a dog's rearend! Belching in someone's face? That is so immature and vulgar for a PG rated movie!"

I say: "Firstly, it's a PG (Parental Guidence suggested, let's all say it together...again...one more time). Lastly, it doesn't show a close-up (or at all) of the dog's butt meeting the lips of it's victim. It's not as graphic as you make it sound. Belching...yeah, gross. Nobody does that until they see a movie to influence them to do so. Yeah, whatever...next?"

Some say: "There's quite the run of dry spots that can drag on."

I say: "I must not have noticed, nor left the house with such a Grinch-like attitude. I went to the movie to have fun. The parts I thought were dry was the little girl singing "Where Are You Christmas", but atleast, thank god, they didn't go overkill with it. JIM CARREY also gets in on the singing with his version of YOU'RE A MEAN ONE, MR. GRINCH."

I haven't seen THE GRINCH since opening day (11/17/00) and would gladly deem it in the Top 5 Movies of 2000. AND, it certainly isn't as bad as THEY make it seem. Either they are JIM CARREY bashers or not a fan of modernizing classics, but I can't think of one real reason not to see it. Though I won't and can't ever forget this NOW-CLASSIC, I do highly recommend this one for everybody. At the moment I am wishing I had seen it more than once, 'cause now I'm suffering from withdrawls to know when it will be released to own on DVD! Remember, not all classics set the standards. Sometimes it can be the upstaged by it's successor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
I really liked it a lot! I watch the original cartoon every Chrsitmas and I've read the book to my little brother. This is a really cute movie I would definitly reccomend. I think the Grinch's cold hearted spirit is captured really well (until he turns good that is). Some people don't like this and feel it ruined the Grinch because it's not strictly to the book, but what do you expect? The book wasn't very long. It can be read in about five minutes more or less...

Anyway I do suggest you watch this provided you aren't one of those affor mentioned people that freak out over every little thing. I do NOT reccomend the Cat in the Hat movie. I thought that movie seemed too much like Austin Powers in a cat suit to tell the truth,

1-0 out of 5 stars Did these people even read the BOOK????
What a terrible movie! How could you possibly ruin such a classic Dr. Seuss book?
Dr. Seuss is one of my favorite authors (no kidding, the books are for much younger readers than me...but I own every Dr. Seuss book, anyway.) It drives me crazy that Dr. Seuss' wife let them PRODUCE this rot! If I were her I reject them and I might even (as Dr. Seuss said on DR. SEUSS GOES TO WAR) smack them in the snoot!
I even didn't watch the whole thing, I left as soon as I could. Unless the ending was about sixty times better than everything prior to that, it was one of the worst movies I've ever watched!
Jim Carrey DID do a good job, but he can't save a movie like THAT! And did we really have to go into his long, boring and disturbing childhood? It tells us WHY he hates Christmas, whereas in the book no one quite no the reason why he hated it. (And don't even get me started on how much I hate THE CAT IN THE HAT with Mike Myers (who, by the way, can't act)!
Not to say I don't like the animated TV Special THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS. That was maybe better than the book was. Although, what could you expect from a master like Chuck Jones who actually KNEW what he was doing! That movie at least 1000 times better than this!
And one of the best parts of the book was "Maybe Christmas DOESN'T come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps, means a little bit more." But how can you believe THAT on THE GRINCH, the vulgar movie that was merchandised to the BONE!!!!!
After watching this film, you realize: The Grinch didn't steal Christmas...but the directors RUINED Christmas!

4-0 out of 5 stars So THAT'S how he stole it...
That was Jim Carrey in that costume? I don't think anyone could have pulled it off better, but for me, Taylor Momsen, who played Cindy Loo Who, was the most enjoyable to watch. What a gifted little actress. Christine Baranski and Molly Shannon, both musically-inclined favorites of mine, also danced across the screen.

So this isn't exactly the same storyline as the one penned by the good doctor himself. But it is very close, with some details added in to give adults a few more chuckles.

And if you like it for nothing else, you will love the fantasy world created by some outstanding set and costume design; terrific old and new music; and vivid special effects.

Worth a viewing or two for all of you Who's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must See, Must Own
I was recovering from hip surgery and popped this movie in the VCR at about 1:00 a.m. It looked like a cute drama from the cover, something I could watch and fall asleep to. I couldn't have been more wrong. Before long I was laughing so hard I popped my stitches and woke my entire family up. I mean to tell you this is the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life. So funny I had to bury my face in the pillow to keep from waking the neighbors. Gut busting hilarity....Jill Clayburg is like you've never seen her before! Jeffrey Tambor is fresh, charming, and outrageously funny portraying a slightly bent free spirited jazz musician.
There's a little piece of everyone in these two characters and will keep you in stitches for weeks to come! This movie is for anyone over 30 who has ever vowed "Never Again" to serious relationships. It's upbeat, up to date and an absolute must see, and for me....a must own! It's the funniest movie at the video store....and now at amazon.com! "Never Again" is the most under rated, under advertised, block buster comedy of all time. I just can't say enough! 5 stars in my book!

Sincerely,
Sherry Malone

5-0 out of 5 stars Well? It's a hoot!
I can't remember the last time I picked a lesser-known title from the video store shelf and decided it's a must-buy! I'd had enough theological babble for a few days, went to rent something light and picked this up as an afterthought. I spent the next week telling all my seminary colleagues that this is a definite MUST-SEE for all who think they're gonna do pastoral work at all! How real and really funny and true! If only we really admitted to living this way, the world would be a far funnier place! Enjoy it ... again and again and again....

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST COMEDIES I HAVE SEEN!!
I remember seeing Jill Clayburgh in those wholesome romantic movies in the late 60s/early 70s. Boy, is this one different! The language would make a gang member blush! The scene when she wears the sex outfit, while answering the door, may be the funniest thing I have ever seen: I laugh my ass off!! Get this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars vulgar but funny
Some vulgar language and sexuality and the dialogue is kind of silly at times, but I did find parts of this film funny.I enjoy Jeffery Tambor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny...Sad....Honest.....
I'm very glad I found this film. But I almost didn't watch it because of the terrible song that accompanies the opening titles - a song that is totally out of synch with the style and mood of the rest of the film. And what a wonderful film it is. My wife and I have both been divorced twice and we sat nodding our heads throughout the film at its accuracy and honesty in dealing with tentative "never again" relationships. The performances by Jeffrey Tambor and Jill Clayburgh are terrific. Anyone who only knows Tambor from The Larry Sanders Show will be amazed by his subtlety and depth. The script and direction are near perfect - the dialogue is people talking like real people (albeit very witty real people). The film successfully blends great comic moments with honest emotions and human behavior. Highly recommended for anyone who has ever had a relationship break up or fall apart (that's pretty much all of us, isn't it?). The film offers hope without sugar-coated optimism. More importantly, it is also highly entertaining. I think I'll go watch it again...but with the sound off for the opening credits! ...

Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but fast
The movie was very informative but because of time ristrictions it skipped a lot of critical events in Sadat's life. Some events in the movie can be argued but the movie was well acted out and directed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Interesting
Sadat is a good film. I was using it for my audio/visual source for a school presentation and it gave me plenty of information and helped me to understand the Arab-Israeli conflict better and also early Egypt. This is both informative and exciting. ... Read more
