4-0 out of 5 stars Groucho Marx and Carmen Miranda. The mind boggles...
Putting Groucho Marx and his cigar in a movie with Carmen Miranda and her fruit basket headdress certainly seems like a good idea, but nobody bothered to write a decent script for this 1947 musical comedy (and you can only think of all the Groucho one-liners that must have ended up on the cutting room floor). The plot, such as it is, has Groucho as Lionel Q. Deveraux, an agent who has one client, Carmen Novarro (Miranda). To make money he has her pose as both a Brazilian bombshell and a French chanteuse to fool nightclub owner Steve Hunt (Steve Cochran). There are some minor subplots involving romance, but they are of tertiary interest at best.

Of course for me the only worthwhile moments are when Groucho is on screen and making with the jokes. The musical numbers are okay, but nothing memorable. If all you have seen are parodies of Carmen Miranda in action then this exposure to the real thing has its value as well. She also works well as a foil for Groucho, which is not really that surprising. You can either be totally flustered or joyfully oblivious to Groucho's zingers and Carmen goes with the later strategy to good effect. "Copacabana" is no substitute for a "true" Marx Brothers film, but despite that inherent limitation it is not a bad film. It would rate a 3.5 but we round up because, after all, it is Groucho.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's...... Groucho! (and Carmen is fun too!)
Just enough gags and zippy one-liners to make it worth the price of admission for Groucho fans. It's only a pity the other brothers are nowhere in sight. I didn't care much for the musical numbers, but that's what the fast-forward button is for.

The picture quality is great and the audio is clear. No Marx Bros. collection is complete without it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my paltrigger
i did"nt know their were 2 my pal trigger. i have a my pal trigger but it doesn"t say one or two. please explain.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Of Roy Rogers
This movie-My Pal Trigger- is stupendous! It is a touching story of Trigger and the beginning of Trigger's and Roy's relationship. Along with co-stars, Dale Evans and Gabby Hayes, Roy breeds his prized mare, Lady, to Golden Sovereign, the fastest horse in the west. The owner of Golden Sovereign refuses Roy's request, but amazingly Lady and Sovereign run off together. Roy is accused of shooting the stallion. Months later, Roy returns with the unregistered foal of the Golden Sovereign as a token of sympathy to the owner. Golden Sovereign's owner sneers and tosses the foal off as a "half-breed". Roy is not about to let him get away with that and promises to prove to one and all that the best horse in the world is- Trigger.

3-0 out of 5 stars funny as it wanna be
I used to watch the Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy and all the other cowboy shows every Saturday and I never realized how ridiculous they were until I watched this one last fall again. What's with Roy Rogers being in some rodeo glamour-looking costume and everyone else in flannel shirts and jeans? The funniest part is how fast and out of nowhere they get into fights. This movie cracked me up. I only wished that Gabby Hayes would have played a drunk, cuz that's when he's funniest. And how come that skinny guy who used to always play somebody named California or Tennessee couldn't be in it? I wish I knew what movies he was in. Alright that's enough rambling -- if you watched cowboy tv shows, watch this cuz it will crack you up. Otherwise, I wouldn't say you're missing a whole lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roy Rogers' personal favorite!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anti-Yankee Southern humor but where are the Blacks?
A humoristic and extreme vision of the South confronted to the invasion of the Yankees. But a strange vision indeed. No Blacks what so ever. A clean white South, just as some would have liked it to be and as it has never existed. This enables the director to show Yankee villains since they only have one objective : to conquer and govern this rebellious South. But it is hilarious in many ways and there are some elements that are good. The trick to make old teetotallers drink alcohol is banal. But the dog is very good and has been well trained, just like these Southeners who become supermen when they hear their Southern national anthem. If you are nostalgic about a past that did not exist and if you are not concerned by unreality then you will find this story amusing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good film if the film stock was in better shape
This film was shot with the cooperation of the Royal Navy at the outset of WW2, so the boats you see are the real McCoy, which is pretty cool if you're a submarine enthusiast. The plot is good, but the film is hampered by: (a) thick English accents. My American brain had some trouble understanding some of the dialogue at the beginning of the film, but after awhile I either adapted to the tongue or the actors spoke clearer. (b) poor film stock. Back in the 1940's war time pressures limited movie studios in production qualities, so the sound is garbled a bit and the film clarity is slightly blurry and grainy, as if you were watching this film through water, and (c) character development which didn't seem to accomplish much other than to slow down the pace of the film and give us some background on the poor Brit sailor of German heritage who ends up saving the life of the crew in a final act of heroism.

The submarine is sent to attack the German battleship "Brandenburg" in the heart of German-controlled waters. The boat must go through mine fields and undersea nets to reach its rendezvous point and make a daring attack. It also makes an unscheduled stop to steal fuel oil from a German-controlled port. Good action here makes it worth the struggle through the beginning of the film.

Not the best WW2 sub film you'll ever see, but worth a viewing or two. ... Read more
