5-0 out of 5 stars A Tremendously Bad Movie, but in a Good Way.
I first saw this movie on a late night Noah Hathaway double feature about 13 yeares ago, when I lived in LA. The host described this movie as a star vehicle for the young star of Neverending Story (which was shown previously that night).

The story is mostly a rehash of the plots of many '50s sci-fi movies, except you insert "Troll" into the script where "Martian" should be. Even to the extent that Noah remarks to his kindly neighbor lady (June Lockhart) that he thinks his sister is a "pod person". Of course, she (Lockhart) being powerful the powerful good sorcerous, explains that Harry's sister is in the Troll's power.

Young Harry must save the world from the evil Troll, while the grown-up neighbors (Sonny Bono, Gary Sandy (WKRP), Julia-Louise Dreyfus (Seinfeld), Brad Hall (SNL), etc.) bumble their way into victimhood. Of course Harry's parents (Shelly Hack & Michael Moriarty) think he's just imagining things. What makes this movie fun is that it's so predictable and the all-star cast seems to intentionally ham it up. Think of it as "North" with monsters.

What I have found weirdly ironic is that Noah's character's name is Harry Potter, Jr. (Hmmmm, haven't we heard that name somewhere recently?)

4-0 out of 5 stars Scary Kid's Movie.
TROLL takes place in a suburban apartment complex. The Potter family (more on that later) moves in to their new home in the bottom apartment. On the day of their move Wendy Ann Potter stumbles into the laundry room where she meets a troll who kidnaps her and uses his magic ring to make himself look like Wendy. One by one, the troll enters each apartment in the complex and turns the occupants into trolls and their dwellings into doorways to a fantasy dimension. If he succeeds in changing all the homes in the building, a dimensional vortex will be formed and modern America will be changed into a fantasy realm of old. The only person who can stop him is Wendy's brother, Harry Potter, Jr. who is under the tutelage of a witch upstairs.

Granted the special effects in this movie aren't all that good. However, the script is decent and the acting is fairly well done. The cast includes Sonny Bono and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss to name a few. This movie is basically a children's scary movie; it's the type of movie I would have loved watching when I was a kid and since I'm still a kid at heart I was enable to enjoy it despite it's flaws.

As a side note, the hero of this film is named Harry Potter. He gets involved in witchcraft and fantasy, though he thinks he's just a normal kid. The apartment slowly becomes a portal that leads to a mysterious and magical world. When he saves his kid sister and fights the big monster, it reminded me off another Harry Potter fighting another monster in CHAMBER OF SECRETS. Not only that, but Harry Potter Jr.'s dad is an author of children's books. Coincidence? Perhaps. However, as good as the Harry Potter series is, one must admit J.K. Rowling isn't as original as so many people suppose her to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars The ORIGINAL Harry Potter! Great Kids Horror Film!
Noah Hathaway, Michael Moriarty, Shelley Hack, Sonny Bono, Julia Louis-Dreyfus along with the incomparable June Lockhart & her real-life daughter Anne Lockhart sharing a role!
EXCELLENT PG-13 FILM for kids and adults alike.

This film has an interesting plotline, mindblowing special effects and a WONDERFUL SOUNDTRACK. Goblins, Trolls, Fairies, Elves, Witches, along with an adorable Talking Toadstool are the chief players that inhabit the underworld.

This movie will hold kids' attention & enchant them. It also features one of my very favorite poems that is recited during a family dinner. Edmund Spencer's The Faerie Queen... MAGICAL, MYSTICAL, & MEMORABLE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Holiday Movie
Dolly Parton plays Ruby Diamond in this touching Christmas story. Ruby meets an untimely death, and before entering heaven wants to become an angel. She is sent back to earth on a mission, and if she succeeds she will get her wings. She has to complete a mission before midnight on Christmas Eve. Ruby is now a nanny for a dysfunctional family who is trying to cope after the death of the mother in the family. The family is disconnected, the father a workaholic and the two children feeling distanced. Ruby helps the family realize they need each other, and need to stick together. Overall it is a wonderful holiday movie that will warm your heart. Dolly sings some wonderful songs too. Overall a well written movie, and Dolly is excellent in it. Add this one to your collection, it will brighten any Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars unlikely good movie
i wasn't expecting much when i bought this movie. i love dolly parton, so i bought it. it really makes me happy. i miss 80's christmas movies of the week, like that one where patty duke has given her son up for adoption to some rich people and then he runs away and spends christmas with her and her family in some rural all-american town. that was a good one! this one is even better! it has all the ingredients for a made-for-tv holiday classic - whiny children who can't act, roddy mcdowell as some spiritual bigwig, dolly's bigwigs, dolly's big, christmas decorations that fart, dolly parton in lingerie, dolly parton singing, children who shop-lift, and much much more. totally superb and very heartwarming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
"Fun for the whole family" really means it's only appropriate for 10 or 12-year-olds. While that also applies to this movie, it can be sappy and few times I'm embarrassed to be watching it (as a guy in my 20s), but it actually IS pretty good and I would probably buy it on DVD but it isn't worth paying over $20 for. Maybe I would buy it around Christmastime.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best christmas movie ever!
The only movie i watch every christmas, it's become tradition. Have to have, and you should 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must See!"
I bought this movie, and I was pleased. It is a great movie, and Dolly Parton is perfect for the part.Dolly Plays Ruby Diamond..a singer that needs to earn her wings by helping a family...will she get them, or will the clock run out? Watch it and Find out!!! It is a great movie for your family during the holidays, or anytime of the year! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every bit as good a Mommy!
After seeing Mommy I couldn't wait to see Mommy 2: Mommy's Day. Right where Mommy left off Mommy 2 picks up. (It's not that easy to kill a Bad Seed!) The movie was suspenseful and kept me guessing. I think Collins pulls together a great script with a very good cast and give us a movie that could become a cult classic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the first!
I think some of the reviewers on this page were too harsh on this film. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but let's not be unkind. Max Allan Collins clearly tried to make a decent sequel to his first film, the smart and wickedly entertaining MOMMY, and I think, for the most part, he succeeds. Patty McCormack effectively reprises the role she played in the earlier film, the ever-devoted MOMMY who is trying to win back the love and respect of her adorable young daughter. However, further killings ensue, and it seems that dear, loving mother is up to her same old tricks. Or is she? Sequels are seldom as good as their predacessors, but I think MOMMY 2 comes very close and at any rate, it's just a fun and entertaining thriller. Despite a few added gore effects, MOMMY 2 still concentrates more on plot and character rather than supplying cheap thrills, and that's the best way to do it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the classic original!!
This is one exceptional and rare sequel. It is even better than it's predecessor. It is somewhat similar to the original in many respects, but has many more twists and turns and surprises. It's also nice to see Paul Petersen (Jeff Stone from the classic t.v. series, "The Donna Reed Show") as "Mommy"'s brother-in-law. It keeps you guessing right up to the amusing and ironic ending, which fortunately also leaves the door open for yet another sequel. If it is as good as the first two, yes please!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the warm & fuzzy titles of these movies fool you.
Aside from a ludicrous scene early on depicting a lethal injection sentence being carried out in what looks like a nurse's office in a suburban elementary school (which, as we find out in the commentary track, was actually filmed in a church basement!), "Mommy 2" is an entertaining, clever thriller, and a good follow-up to "Mommy". I especially liked how writer/director Max Collins didn't give us more of the same. Whereas "Mommy" was more of a horror thriller about a deranged mother, "Mommy 2" is essentially a straight-up murder mystery, where Patty McCormack's "Mommy" character- supposedly rehabilitated through the wonders of modern chemistry- is just one of many suspects in a series of brutal killings. In addition to the well-told mystery story, the DVD emulates the first "Mommy" DVD and includes a load of extras, my favorite of which is a terrific commentary track featuring Mr. Collins and his actors and crew. And, hey-- when you're done with the "Mommy" films, be sure to check out Mr. Collins' latest DVD thriller, "Real Time: Siege at Lucas Street Market". Story and extras wise, it's a blast, maybe his best DVD yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting Suspense!
Mommy has done some pretty bad things and in this sequel to "Mommy" she is about to pay for her crimes. But wait, Mommy is not through yet; a woman like her cannot be disposed of so easily. After all, she only wants to clear her name and reunite with her precious daughter Jessica Anne. The media and those around her however are relentless in trying to get her to confess and discover the truth. In addition the famlies of her former victims would like nothing better then to see Mommy dead. Can she riase above it all, and still regain the love of the daughter she once nearly killed? If you have read "Moommy" then you have to read "Mommy's Day." It is just as suspenseful as the first book and the ending will positively shock you! Great book highly recommended. Hope Mr. Collins writes a third in the series. ... Read more
