1-0 out of 5 stars Memories of Midnight
This movie was terribly dissapointing. The Other Side of Midnight is one of my all time favorites and I could not wait to see this movie. The characters and story line are weak and unsophisticated compared to OSOM. I loved Jane's business attire, she dressed to the T in this movie and the scenery in Greece and Venice were lovely and that's about it. I would not watch this mini series again. Jane Seymore was wonderful in "Somewhere in Time".

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Sheldon Thriller, But Too Long
Jane Seymour and Omar Sharif make this sequel to "The Other Side of Midnight" come alive, but they can only hold it together for a limited time. Seymour plays the amnesiac victim and Sharif is the badguy. When the are together this crackels, but unfortunately that isn't often. This film would have been much better with some judicious editing.

P.S. There is a very sexy scene at the end that unfortunately is covered by the end credits. Didn't the producers feel that they could have spared an extra five minutes for something interesting?

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific! Reunion of Sharif and Seymour like H is to O H2O
Jane Seymour is at it again as an innocent victim. She plays a great role alond with Omar Sharif who puts the icing on the cake. I suggest this mini-series to anyone and is definitely worth the price! It kept me in suspense 99.9% of the time. Sheldon is a true master! Also suggested with Seymour: Somewhere in Time, Matters of the Heart, Dr. Quinn, Onassis, and Live and Let Die. With Sharif: Dr. Zhivago, Oh, Heavenly Dog! (he plays the same type of villain only not as powerful but still high in the ranks). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unsung CLASSIC Of American Comedy!
With "Viva Max!" director Jerry Paris(best known for directing numerous episodes of "The Dick Van Dyke Show")took the skills he had finely tuned for television(sharp, clever, fast-paced comedy)and brought them to The Big Screen. What makes this film such a stand-out from his work in television is that he was successfully able to combine these said skills with social and political themes, creating a film that is both hysterically funny and fast-paced, yet filled with MUCH "Food For Thought".

As a person who hails from BOTH the cultures(Texas Anglo and Mexican-American)depicted in this story, I could relate to the REAL significance of this film. Upon initial viewing, one may only see it as a clever, fast-paced comedy, well-acted by a STERLING cast(indeed, I think John Astin's performance as Sgt. Valdez ranks among the FINEST of his ENTIRE career).

Upon REPEATED viewings however, one can start to recognize FAR MORE to both script and cast of characters, than was initially apparent. The DEPTH of personality(particularly in Astin's and Ustinov's characters)simply DEMANDS repeated viewings to REALLY appreciate. They are complex:both inept and ludicrous, yet oddly courageous, stoic and ultimately WISE in their "Military Conquest" of Anglo-America!

Comedian Jonathan Winters turns in THE performance of a lifetime as the good-natured, befuddled brigadeer general of the Texas National Guard, chosen as a liason between the Mexican Army and the Texas Anglos.

Want to know what Texans are REALLY like? FORGET "King Of The Hill" and WATCH THIS FILM!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anyone familiar with San Antonio this is a must see.
Fantastic what if story. The picked only serious actors for this politically correct film on manifest destiny. Peter Ustinov is General Maximilian Rodrigues de Santo. Although the story revolves around him many others help carry the story such as John Astin Sergeant Valdez who keeps the general out of trouble and Jonathan Winters as General Billy Joe Hallson of the National Guard.
This film was actually made in San Antonio. Written by Lehrer, James

Basic story is Mexican general is going to retake the Alamo as an act of heroism for his men.

2-0 out of 5 stars Viva Max?
Viva Max! is a dull, sometimes boring comedy. Filmed on location at the Alamo then relocated in Italy due to angry protesters interference in production, this movie stars Peter Ustinov as a Mexican General trying to re-capture the Alamo. Although Ustinov is great as the bumbling General, the only actor that could breath life into this movie was Jonathan Winters. Although Winters is at his best improvising comedy routines, he still manages to create some fairly funny scenes in this film. This film is a must-have for Ustinov and Winters fans. Otherwise, it bites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny funny irreverent but funny.
This was PBS' Jim Lehrer's first book. The movie, now a video, starred some greats of the past. One almost has to feel sad for General Maxmillian at the end of the story but he most certainly 'saves face' and becomes a hero to his men. One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read and absolutely one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. You'll watch it again and again. Hope you'll tell me I was right! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Movie
This was a movie that I saw when I was a child. It is a great story where the Grimm Brothers wander into an Enchanted Forest where they run into many different characters from stories such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Hansel and Gretel. It is a great film and if you have children this is a must see for them!

5-0 out of 5 stars been searching for a long time
This was one of my favorite movies I saw when I was a kid in the 80s. I have been trying to track it down for a LONG TIME. I highly suggest this movie. It's a great fantasy about the brothers walking through a enchanged forest and bumping into many of the fairy tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent movie!
This was my favorite movie as a child and i still enjoy it now. It takes you away from the everyday problem filled adult life and back to your childhood. If you are a parent I strongly recomend you by this movie for you and your children. They don't make movie's like this anymore pick it up while you can!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn about the Grimm Brother's fairy tales
I saw this film a while ago, and it still holds strong in my memory as a very good movie. While it is obvious that this film is meant for children, there is no reason that adults (children of all ages) cannot enjoy this film. There are several silly and cheesy moments, from the costumes to the dialogue (i.e. really really bad jokes), even to the acting. However, in this case the good outweighs the bad. One of the most remarkable thing about this film is that most, if not all, of the fairy tales mentioned are set in some way to music and/or dance. To see these fairy tales come to life in this way is remarkable. I would definitely recommend this film to every child I know...and even to a few adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plausible history
While touring the Middle East Harvey and Zoey get off the buss and finds some scrolls in a cave. They chronicle the life of Herschel; as Harvey starts reading we are carried back to the actually time and given a first hand look at what really took place with Herschel and Moses. Several times God speaks to Moses and Herschel is in earshot and thinks it is he being addressed.
My favorite scene is when they are both in baskets floating down the Nile and Moses give Herschel's basket a push off course and changing the course of history.

Dudley Moore is Harvey/Herschel and Laraine Newman is Zoey/Zerelda. There are many great actors that are choice picks for the characters. A short list:
Richard Prior - Pharaoh
John Ritter - Satan (The Devil)
Lisa Caimano - Baby Moses
John Houseman - The Archangel

Comedic misfire from the mid-1970s in a futile attempt to bottle the same lightning that struck when Barbra Streisand teamed with Ryan O'Neal in What's Up, Doc? Here, Streisand plays a spoiled rich girl, the head of a bankrupt cosmetics company, who discovers she's lost everything--except her ownership of the contract of a washed-up boxer (O'Neal, known for his combative nature offscreen). So she tries to rally this dispirited pug into a comeback that will earn the kinds of purses that will put her back on her feet. Naturally, in the process romantic sparks are kindled. But despite a loud and energetic performance by Streisand, this Howard Zieff comedy doesn't add up to much.--Marshall Fine ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "I've got the same two words for you!"
I would actually give this film three-and-a-half stars. This film was a major hit upon release in the summer of '79, but it has since been written off by many as one of Streisand's weakest film efforts. As for myself, I could go about reviewing the film in two ways. I could say that the THE MAIN EVENT is a perfect example of a worn out premise given the by-the-book treatment, with no attempt to disguise how derivative and predictable the whole thing is. However, I could also say that THE MAIN EVENT manages to be likable, funny, and entertaining.

Both of these statements have a lot of merit, but I think I'm going to go with my second opinion. Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is quite enjoyable while it's playing. The scenes are set up well, the one-liners are mostly funny ("I said celebrate, not fornicate!"), and Streisand and O'Neal give off a strong sexual charge between them onscreen. It may not be meaningful, or even original, but THE MAIN EVENT is a pretty good timewaster.

About the DVD: The picture quality is great, and the mono sound is fine as well. It's great to have the original trailer and the 19-minute television special, titled GETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE MAIN EVENT, preserved on disc, although Streisand's brief audio commentary is slightly disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars She cant make a bad movie.
It has been quite a while since i have actually seen The Main Event but i have been trying to find it in the stores on video for quite a long time. I can remember loving the movie. There was a lot of screeming and yelling...but isnt that what boxers do. I thought the way they pick on each other is cute. I thought Barbra was precious. It is one of those movies that you come out feeling good which is hard to find these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie, but a PG rating?????
I liked the movie, it's fun and funny but what really surprised and shocked me was: PG RATING? Come on! 1. They show two butts in the movie, there is a lot of adult talk, and a lot of hintings to sexuality? It is a good movie, but I mean one would think more about the point of view of watching it depending on the rating of the movie.
All in all, this is a quite good movie which I like
Recommended, it's a lot of fun

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Entertaining but I've seen better
The Main Event was the first Streisand picture I ever saw. I loved it at the theaters. But since then I've seen many more of her movies on VHS. I have to say it's a good film but not her best. I liked "Yentl" or "Owl & Pussycat" or "A Star Is Born" much better. Her acting is superb, so is Ryan's. But the storyline is a little weak compared to other movies she is in. I reccommend it its just not her very best movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nearly Perfect Fun Camp Film
This movie is a definate visual treat. From the beautiful and fun Valerie Perrine to the spectacle that is Bruce Jenner in short shorts which are so tight that my eyes watered for him and then there's Steve Guttenburg....who is so hyper and manic in this movie that one wonders what he was on that kept him so perky and wide eyed? :o) It was after all 1980 and I don't even think Betty Ford was thought of as anything but a former first lady at that point in time. Then there's The Village People without whom this film would never had been made at all. Now I was a pre-teen when this came out and I wasn't a huge fan of their music but I still remember the David Hodo musical sequence and thinking to myself....Yikes. And then there's the ode to the "Milkshake" and I ask you, Got Milk? How ahead of it's time! In a strange note, since buying this video I had an erotic dream about Felipe, the Indian, and to this day I can't explain that one? So if you like a fun, frilly, fluffy, and Fabu film....PLEASE buy this movie A.S.A.P. P.S. Valerie Perrine is still a goddess, why isn't she making movies anymore, where is the justice in this world?

5-0 out of 5 stars OH, YEAH....SO BAD, IT'S *GOOD*!
OK, first of all, completely ignore Leonard Maltin's taking-himself-far-too-seriously review of this film. Like a pug that's so ugly it's cute, this movie, like so many others have pointed out, is deliciously bad -- horrible acting; cheesy special effects (no doubt state-o'-the-art way back then); riduclous plot; oh, and did I mention *horrible acting*? -- so bad it's wonderful. Like a horrible auto accident you can't tear your eyes away from, this movie is so dreadful that you can't stop watching, if only to see how badly any of the actors (except the ever-perky/pro Valerie Perrine) will deliver their lines. The musical numbers are a delight, though, and it's obvious THAT is where most of them money went. Poor, poor Nancy Walker (that's right, Rhoda's mom) directed this and she'll be remembered for this if nothing else. You haved to wonder WHAT she was thinking, though....

You don't have to be gay or into disco to enjoy this: just sit back and let the horror (and the fun) wash over you. It's THE perfect movie for a group of people to watch and groan together.

BUY THIS MOVIE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Relentlessly incredible
This film is one of the best musical movies ever made. The Village People are incredible. I highly recommend this film to everyone that likes to watch a bunch of fun people having a great time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't stand the movie
There are some movies so horrible that you watch them, not out of guilty pleasure but rather with the same interest as rubbernecking a 20 car pile-up on a major highway.

Nothing works about this movie. It is bad, bad bad, not even Valerie Perrin can make it good. As for Bruce Jenner, what was he thinking. The rumour is that a lot of coke was used in the making of the movie, the reason, they all wanted to dull their senses it is that bad. I'm surprised anyone had a career after this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I appeared in this movie, and I think it's great!
.
OK, so I wasn't exactly a "star" in this epic, but I was in the final scene, filmed in San Francisco. It was a HUGE disco-bash filmed at The Galleria, and I was on one of the balconies hanging over the dancers below. We all kind of wondered what the heck was happening; what they were filming. No one was really sure at the time. (And NO ONE could figure out what Gypsy Rose lee's little sister "Baby June" (June Havoc) was doing at a gay dance bash... sing OUT, Louise!)

When the film came out (inside joke here, as the gay aspect of the movie was closeted within the context of the film itself), I went to the San Francisco premiere. The film continued to play for about a week before fading into oblivion. It was a HUGE BOMB!

I always thought the best part of this film (besides the over-the-top production numbers) was Bruce Jenner's fabulously sexy belly in the scene where he wears a half-shirt and cut-offs. However, when I saw this on DVD and kept my finger on the freeze-frame button, I was amazed to see more than I ever remember seeing in the theatre during the "YMCA" number. Hard to believe this film has a "PG" rating with what they show in the shower scene! (I thought I was at a hotdog stand!)

A few years after this film bombed in theatres world-wide, I remember meeting Bruce Jenner in San Francisco and telling him that I thought his belly in that scene was the best part of the film. He said that if that was the best part of the movie, he now understood why he and most of the other actors in that film never made another film!

Well, since this film effectively killed the careers of everyone who appeared in it (except for Steve Guttenberg), his words proved true.

Anyway, it's a fun movie to watch, just don't take it seriously. It's just a big disco joke. Enjoy it for what it's worth. This ain't "Gone With The Wind", it's a different kind of epic!

Oh, I remember disco, and the glory of the BOOM BOOM BOOM when we all saw our faces reflected in the spinning mirror globes high above the dance floor, and thinking it would never end. This movie is an effective reminder of the good times, bad taste, and sweet excess of the disco era. ... Read more

Of the several film versions of Donald E. Westlake's "Dortmunder" novels, this is easily the best. Not perfect, but it has very good acting and the story stays fairly close to the original book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timless Heist Pic for all ages
Okay, I rate movies by what they are aiming to do; THE HOT ROCK aims to entertain, make you smile, and infuse a sense of camaraderie while rooting for crooks. With that in mind, I would think that only Cyclops OD'd on Visine would rate this less than all the stars on a clear summer night

I've watched this film app. eight times, even showed it to my urban HS basketball team I coach a few years ago, and they loved it.

Without revealing any plot lines, this classic rhymer remains with me to this day: Afghanistan banastand. The most famous password since the Marx Bros fiddled around with "swordfish."

Just go get this and then wonder how you never seen or heard of it before.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Favorite!!
The Hot Rock is a favorite movie of mine that brings back warm memories of my childhood. I loved this movie especially the scene when Dortmunder confronts Murch about not knowing how to fly the helicopter and Murch starts flipping switches, gets it started and takes off. My brothers and I used Murch's line "flip this here, hit this one, this one and this one, then double it over, hit your battery, then your starter and come on baby, come baby--Ha-ha-ha!" all the time when growing up and building cars. It is a classic film set in NYC that all will enjoy and one that goes down as my all time favorite.

My mother (A big Robert Redford fan) would always let me know when it was coming on TV so I could watch it again and again. She said I reminded here of Murch as I could fix or drive anything mechanical and get any engine to start. She recently brought me the DVD for my 40th birthday and I watch it at least once a month.

Redford and his enjoyable cast are funny and very entertaining. It's a great heist film and one that makes you want them to get away with the jewel.

Other great scenes in the film I liked: When "Chicken" pretended to throw Greenberg down the elevator shaft and Abe gets busted for lying about the stone, and when Redford coolly strolls into the back on his last attempt at the diamond. There is also some great close up shots of the World Trade Center while it was under construction. You can actually see thru the building on a fly by.

In a day when many movies are packed with violence and harsh language, this film will bring all whom watch it back to a time when great films were made that could stand on their own without brutality and curse words every other line.

This movie is a classic and I would recommend it to all viewers. I would also love to see (and be involved in any way possible) a remake of this film set here in New Orleans!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars this came first
I watched this movie with my dad, and within about fifteen seconds, I said, "wow, this feels just like Ocean's Eleven." and he said, "really? I was going to say Out of Sight," not realizing that both were directed by the same guy. So if you want to see what was almost certainly one of SS's inspirations, check this out. It's a riot. It would be hard to go wrong with William Goldman writing and Robert Redford starring, but then you add in Zero Mostel and it's just out-of-control funny. An excellent heist flick. ...

I reccommend it its just not her very best movie. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair movie with great title
Even its great cast cannot make this a good movie. I must say that it makes some important points that deserve further thought.

1-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE *WORST* FILMS EVER MADE
It is absolutely unbelievable how truly awful this film is--'Frozen Assets' is easily one of the WORST films ever made. This movie is so bad that it's beyond comprehension.

(Almost worth seeing for the broad strokes of undiluted incompetence this film was brushed with.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Light and Funny
For a slightly different, light hearted comedy, try Frozen Assets. It will put a smile on your face without a lot of foul language and nudity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simply funny!
This is a typical Shelly Long movie in which she plays a small town doctor assisting those with fertility problems. In comes Corben Bernsen and Larry Miller and the antics begin. This movie is a feel good movie that is incredibly funny in its simplicity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light-hearted comedy
Frozen Assets is a light-hearted comedy that will tickle your funny-bone. It might be one of those movies you have to be in a funny movie to watch and laugh at, but it is pretty good. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Forrest Gump meets Fatal Attraction
Certain members of the pseudo-intellectual crowd, the type who attend film festivals to be "challenged" by a film instead of merely "entertained," will flock like lemmings to see or rent this film.   I know this type well, because I am currently dating one, and he persuaded me to view this film with him.   What a waste of two hours of my time!

Before I receive hate mail for being "mainstream," let me make it plain that I have enjoyed many films which are off the beaten path: Maurice, My Beautiful Launderette, Beethoven's Nephew, or the recent (WONDERFUL) Big Eden, the list goes on and on.   Unfortunately, the main characters of this tiresome little opus have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and neither does the script.

Buck, the main character, is an emotionally retarded man in his late 20s, who has never moved past an early adolescent sexual experience with his best friend, Chuck, who HAS grown up and is preparing to get married.  After Buck's mother dies (the first scene in the movie, a charming way to start a film, don't you think?) Chuck attends the funeral, where Buck makes a pass at his old friend in the restroom.  When Chuck rejects Buck's advance, he remains undeterred, and moves to Los Angeles to, in effect stalk Chuck.

While Mike White tries to portray Buck as fragile and lovable, he merely comes across as creepy and irritating.  Frankly, I wound up having more sympathy for Chuck and his fiance, and kept wondering why they didn't go to the police for a restraining order.  That's what any real person would have done.  In another instance of unreality, Buck befriends a young boy who injures his hand with a firecracker. But would any responsible (or even semi-responsible) parent let a character like Buck get within a hundred feet of her son? The utter lack of verisimilitude in these characters' behavior makes it impossible for any semi-critical person to suspend his/her disbelief. The movie rambles through several subplots until Buck winds up blackmailing Chuck into one, final, sexual encounter. The saving grace of this scene is that the viewer knows that the film must be finally nearing an end.

There are those who call this type of film deep and relevant. Frankly, I can find more depth and relevance in an episode of Star Trek.

4-0 out of 5 stars Punches a nerve
When Buck, an immature 27-year-old, is reunited with his best friend, Chuck, a successful music industry executive, his resulting infatuation threatens to ruin Chuck's previously stable existence. CHUCK & BUCK successfully blends comedy, drama, and stalker films and is made all the more immediate by Miguel Arteta's decision to shoot on digital video. This, coupled with the striking performances by the two leads--both nonprofessional actors (Mike White and Chris Weitz are successful screenwriters)--results in a highly original film that can't easily be categorized.

"Chuck and Buck" is a disturbing but fascinating film. I have been in both Chuck's shoes (I had a guy in my math class who would not leave me alone, to the point of following me around constantly, asking me out, and calling me) and in Buck's (I was in love with my best friend for two years and went through hell because of it), and let me tell you, neither side is pretty. That's why "Chuck and Buck" is so powerful. It is an extremely real depiction of a stalker and his stalkee. Sure, it's hard to take at times, but the writing, directing, and especially acting, are brilliant.

An expert at finding the humanity in seemingly irredeemable characters, director Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl) touches more than a few raw nerves, and he taps into the characters' memories through dreamlike footage of young boys and the use of an insidiously catchy kiddie-pop ditty. "Chuck & Buck" is the sort of film that burrows under the skin by refusing to establish the expected cinematic distance between the audience and the bizarre man-child at its center. It may freak us out, but it's never a freak show. Good times!

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is The Movie That The Cable Guy Should Have Been.
This is one of those movies that makes you laugh and squirm at the same time. Mike White's script and his impressive performance are the driving force behind the film. If you like smart dark comedy, I recommend this movie highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars You could use a reality check
Shut up. Try getting stalked for 4 years by a Buck-like person and you'll see what I mean idiot.

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome refresher
Woah...sounds like the last reviewer could use some therapy of his own.

Yes, a dark movie...yes, a disturbing movie...but it keeps your attention, challenges you, and most importantly its' complexity is an experience...that's why a movie should be about.

And for what it's worth, Buck's desperation and anti-social behaviors are pitiful...how can someone not feel bad for the guy on some level? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible sequel
Because I was nuts about the original with Michael J. Fox, I felt that I had to go see this movie when it came out. Although it stared Jason Bateman in the lead role this time (Fox had other committments) I figured that I would give it a chance and so went to the theaters.

College student Todd Howard may be more intially popular than his small town cousin Scott, but the revealing of the family secret is much less amusing this time because it is basically the same synopsis with a location and some character changes. This of course did not make a successful movie, and I venture to argue, may have actually hurt the franchise's chances.

To his credit, Bateman really tries to make this film work, but lacks Fox's same comic timing and the ability to play an average person blessed with a rather unusal family curse. The problem is, the sensitivity and confusion that Fox managed to convey throughout the first film never shows up in the hastily produced sequel. ...

This movie is an effective reminder of the good times, bad taste, and sweet excess of the disco era. ... Read more
