4-0 out of 5 stars A Enjoyable Film from Stuart Gordon
Re-Animator was a classic, From Beyond was too, Dolls was disappointing and Robot Jox a great film of entertainment. The setting is somewhere after a Nuclear War and 2 countries have split in to oppossing sides; 1 Good (The Market) and 2 Bad (The Confederation). War has been outlawed and terrotial possession has been settled by piloting huge mechanical robots by there nation's champions. Achilles (Gary Granham) is the Market's only help against the Confederation's unstoppable champion Alexander (Paul Koslo) must do battle once and for all. This is a great movie from Stuart Gordon i noticed some people won't like it but it's there decision. Also there are some great stop motion by David Allen Productions but the effects aren't great but there ok for the age. Overall i enjoyed it.
Note: This move is extremely rare and i bought it at half.com they should have some copies left so better hurry before they run out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Campy lunacy
I watched a screening of this at a convention where SF writer Joe Haldeman, who did the screenplay, sat in back with a something eating grin on his face.

What's not to like? In celebration of their son's visit, the family has meat--a lone weiner floating in a tureen of soup. The female pilot makes all the men nonplussed, then has the tables turned on her when an enemy robot unleashes a giant crotch chainsaw in the midst of a duel, for the obvious Freudian tie-ins (at which point Joe was grinning mercilessly.)

All the jokes and innuendos are way over the top. As Joe put it: "I was writing a movie for adults that kids could enjoy, and the director was writing a movie for kids that adults could enjoy."

Add in a Slim Pickens performance invoking Dr. Strangelove, and it's a twisted, unsubtle romp through political incorrectness, poking fun at (among others) environmentalists, capitalists, global politics and sports fanatics (the spectators who get squashed under a falling robot).

Oh yeah, and it has these kick butt robot warriors, too. Grab your friends, grab the kids, grab a pizza and a couple of beers for the adults and laugh until you choke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Any Occasion
Anyone who knows me is familiar with my philosophy that there are only three genres of movies worth watching:
First, there's the miniature robot movies (see Batteries not Included), that feature robots much smaller than people. These movies get a little sappy but they still make me hope for a day when I can have a conversation with my toaster. Second, there are the human size robot movies (see RoboCop parts 1-3), distinguished by robots that are roughly the size of the actors playing them. Third, there is the giant robot movie (like Robot Jox!). I'd take this genre any day of the week. I would recommend this movie. You've gotta see these robots bash each other into submission! I don't know if they used models or built real robots but the special effects make them look like robots. The acting glistens with reality.
The worst part about the movie is the opening credits-everyone knows the title of the movie they're seeing either from buying the ticket or from the box the tape was in so why do they have to waste valuable movie time by showing it on the screen? Unless you want to read a title you already know and a bunch of names I would fast forward that part.
I used to watch this movie almost every day in my basement and my dad would yell at me "quit watching that movie and eating peanut butter and get a job!" I also love the soundtrack but I don't listen to it anymore because it reminds me of my ex-girlfriend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Crash and Burn
Any fans of campy movies like "Army of Darkness" and "Wing Commander" and TV series like Voltron and Transformers should love it. Similar fans of computer games like Mech Warrior should also appreciate this movie. Decent special effects, casting, directing, and music make it better than many B movies like those previewed before the movie. The best parts of the movie are the robot fight scenes, but even the storyline isn't bad.

We find our hero surrounded by "tubies", young men and women that have been created in test tubes for the express purpose of being robot jocks. He witnesses the ninth member loss of the Market team which he represents, to their nemesis the Confederation. The Confederation team led by a baddy with a Russian accent that kills people indiscriminately. It seems the Markets secret weapons are being sold to the Confederation by a spy.

The finale shows the spy exposed and a battle royale of the two mechs of the Confederation and Market. One can only hope this comes out on DVD since it is far more fun to watch than many of the others I have seen released. Let's hope Columbia Pictures makes it available soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meca madness
I'd have to start with a contraction since that's what I'm reminded of seems to be a movie spin off of some 70's and 80's cartoon legends such as Voltron and Robotech (Macross, for the new generation). Over all Great fights, good fxs for early 90's release, a couple familar faces and good story line to run with. Hope you like it as much as I. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth seeing for the commentary alone
Okay, I see lots of reviews that talk about the film itself and don't dwell much on special features. Here, I'll try to get into the reason for buying a special edition and you can read other reviews if you want to know about the story.

Re-Animator (The Millennium Edition) brings an old favourite back to life (no pun intended). The picture and sound quality are so good, it's almost as if the movie was re-made using today's technology. I always liked this quirky little movie ever since I saw it on video in 1985-86, but I had assumed it had gone the way of so many '80s low budget gems. So I was pleasantly surprised to see it recently on DVD and in a remastered edition. The film is still a classic cult film, having lost none of its wit and charm (if one can say that a gory horror fest can be 'charming'), but the thing I'm happiest about is the cast commentary, which, although not overly informative (there's a director commentary and numerous video interviews that go deeper into movie facts), is nevertheless very entertaining. The actors obviously had a lot of fun making the movie, and they clearly have a lot of fun watching it together. Some moments during the cast commentary are truly a Mystery Science Theater 3000 kibbitz-fest, and so really we get two movies in one - the original version and a goofy MST3K-style review, but with the insights and rememberances of those who helped make the film.

There are lots of extended scenes and one deleted scene that was too hot for the censor (Barbara Crampton - yeah, baby! Yeah!) Added to this, lots of audio choices make this a great buy for those with hi-fi bells and whistles. Also, a set of still photos and video interviews that put other special edition efforts to shame.

All in all, I think this is a fantastic effort, far better than many remastered editions on DVD. The team that remastered this one obviously did their job with care and reverence for this cult classic. Certainly this 're-animated' Re-Animator (okay, sorry, I meant that pun) is well worth the price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horror at it's finest!
Rarely do great 80's horror movies get the DVD treatment they deserve. Sice the assumption that the market is limited, you can often only find mediocre transfers with little to no extras. But with "Re-Animator", that paradigm is broken and we get a top quality and thoroughly entertaining version of the cult classic.

Stuart Gordon's gore-fest concerns a medical student named Herbert West, who's experiments with bringing the dead back to life are successful, but with grave consequences. Jeffrey Combs is first rate as the whacked out West, and he plays it both for shock and comedy value. It is criminal that he isn't more widely recognized outside of the horror and cult circles. The rest of the cast is exceptional, especially Robert Sampson as the re-animated headmaster. The special effects can best be described as gruesome, with plenty of decapitations, body parts flying, and other nasties. But what sets "Re-Animator" apart from other 80's horror flicks is the story, the good acting, and the good production. This is a great movie that satisfies both the need for quality filmmaking and the need for gore.

The Millenium Edition DVD is packed with extras, all of them worthwhile. What initially pleased me most was the quality of the transfer, which makes the horrible VHS transfers seem like a different movie. The commentary, especially by the producer and the cast, is more like a high school reunion with everyone having a good time. The interviews also give valueable insight, and the deleted scenes are also nice goodies for fans.

This is the definative version of "Re-Animator", and great value for anyone who loved the movie. The extras are quality, and the transfer is superb. In short, a DVD you must own (assuming you can stomach it).

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny Gore Flick
How they took HP Lovecraft's short story (which is one of the SCARIEST short stories ever written, in my opinion)and came up with this, I'll never know, but there's no denying the entertainment value.
This has some outrageous scenes, like the decapitated head performing cunnilingus on a woman strapped to a table, and the exploding eyes, and the re-animated cat. It is easy to see why this has such a huge, loyal cult following.
Now to be fair, what I'm about to say has not been mentioned by the other 106 reviewers, leading me to believe that this only occured with my copy, but I was not able to move the arrow on the main menu, so I missed out on the extra features. Like I said, I proably recieved a defective copy, but it may be wise to investigate before purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Re-Animate Her"
One of my all time favorite horror movies next to day of the dead, Zombie, dead alive, etc. A good horror for fans of the undead or just a quick scare. There are some very gruesome scenes such as decapitation by shovel, eyeballs exploding, attacking intestines, and it seems when ever you see the Deans daughter, about five or ten minutes later she's naked. I also highly recommend Bride of the Re-Animator.

2-0 out of 5 stars Utterly Disgusting
This is a warning to any horror fan. This movie is extremely disgusting and has absouletly NO point what so ever. I feel bad for jeffery combs, because of this movie his repuataion is now worse than ever. The gore is over the top, and there is no plot, besides phystoic zombies trying to kill people.

Here is the gore that this movie has: Decapitation by shovel, bitten off fingers, a bone saw through the stomach, someone pulling off some guys skin, than revealing the skull, and with a bone saw removes the skull, and picks up the brain and plays with it, we see a guy shove a Q-tip in a hole in someones for head, a cat with a broken neck, a stomach exploding with organs coming to life and attacking someone, eyes exploding, a head being impaled on a needle and lots more blood plus a head that falls off after being hit by a woman. For violence, we get someone being hit in the head with a shovel, someone being thrown into the wall with extreme force breaking the glass, slapping, hitting and punching to ward off a dead zombie.

Overall, I think this movie was a waste of money. But, now that you know what the movie is truly about, you can make that descision for yourself. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Haunted Spacecraft?
Dark Side Of The Moon is an enjoyable Sci-fi thriller. It starts like haunted spacecraft story in 2022 when the malfunctioned space station rendezvous with Spacecraft Discovery the crew later find out the fact that it had vanished in Bermuda Triangle in 1992. The spacecraft now thirty years old is eerily intact but there seems to be no living souls around. After the crew encounter the dead body of one of the missing Discovery crew, the story turns like sort of Alien series. Something evil embodies to human body through human contact with the perfect triangle scar mark on the victim's abdomen (and it begets another victim like vampire stories). Suspension heats up when the crew started to suspect each other. Although trying to connect Bermuda triangle mystery with that of dark side of the moon is not so convincing, it will please the fans of Sci-fi movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sci-fi/horror
I absolutely love this movie. I've seen it a few times and hope it comes out on DVD some time. It's extremely creepy and dark. The link between the dark side of the moon and the bermuda triangle is very clever and makes you wonder.

5-0 out of 5 stars A richly satisfying and entertaining film.
The prospect that there is a link between the Bermuda Triangle and the side of the moon that Earth never sees brings a depth to the film that few attain. With supurb actors and outstanding special effects, "The Dark Side of the Moon" is one of the best SFI-FI movies around.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent movie.
I've seen a lot of good movies, but "The Dark Side of the Moon" really takes the cake as one of the best ever! It's incredibly thought-provoking and well-acted; and the level of tension increases with each scene. Overall, an excellent film. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gene Wilder in wonderful form!
I first caught this little gem in the wee small hours of a Sunday morning, after a very late night out, on one of our main TV Networks here in Australia. I laughed so hard in many of the scenes and am still convinced it's probably one of Gene Wilder's best performances - similar at times to his wonderful take on Leo Bloom in the masterpiece 'The Producers'. It's a pretty simple tale of two close mates dealing with a series of problems that life has thrown up at them but handled so subtly and with great understanding for its characters. There's a great cast here in fine form including Ellen Burstyn, Chloris Leachman, Valerie Harper and a young Rob Reiner in a rather zany role as Gene Wilder's agent, who doesn't realise he's his agent. A very funny scene. Thursday's Game is a very perceptive and often hilarious look at famliy and friendship set against life in the Big Apple.I agree a re-make might be a good idea but I have the feeling it's the kind of story that sits very comfortably in the '70s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gene Wilder at his funniest and most poignant
I stumbled across this little gem in the wee small hours of a Sunday morning on one of the TV Networks here in Australia some 15 years ago and fell in love with its simple tale. Gene Wilder is probably in his finest form here and really strikes up a nice chemistry with Bob Newhart in the role of his very straight-laced poker playing buddy who's going through a mid-life crisis. Great cast including Ellen Burstyn, Chloris Leachman, Valerie Harper and watch out for a cameo by Rob Reiner as Gene Wilder's pretty zany agent, who doesn't realise he's his agent. Very funny scene. A low key little film but well worth the investment for its perceptive themes of friendship, family and life in New York. I agree a re-make would be a good idea but somehow this story sits too well in the '70's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable lightweight comedy
A forgotten TV Movie with an excellent cast, strong script and solid, if unexciting direction. Gene Wilder and Bob Newhart are two businessmen who continue to meet up in secret after their weekly poker game ends. Not a lot really happens and there is nothing earth-shattering, but it does a very nice job of examining marriage, love and life just before middleage. Written by James L. Brooks I am suprised no one in Hollywood has thought to create a remake. A great value at the price and if you have broadband internet access it can also be viewed for free from... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Why Not in DVD?
The other reviews here say it very well. So pardon me if I vent a little: Why is a marvelous movie like this not in DVD? What irks me is that so much idiotic drivel (such as "The Real World" or "American Idol") seem to pop right onto DVD, while the best things are often left in the can somewhere in a dusty archive waiting for a building fire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go toward the light
This is the most amazing film I have ever watched! Similar to The Cure it is both heart felt and true to life. Everyone can get something from this well acted and scripted drama. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The hand of love
This movie had to be the best tear-jerker I have ever seen. It is full of situations that no parent would ever want to be in, but once faced with the delima, what else could a parent do, but give their child "the hand of love". To help thier child go through the transaction from life to death with the comfort of knowing that there is something more and death is just the beginning of life. This movie shows love in the purest and most unselfish sence of the word. Great for the whole family, it will make you want to draw close to each other knowing that everyday is a gift and that we are not promised tomorrow and that our family and friends should be treated and loved as if today was their last day.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Movie!
Go Toward the Light is about a Mormon family who learns that their 8-year-old son has A.I.D.S.. This movie was based on a true story at the time when A.I.D.S. patients were only expected to live one year. This was a very inspirational movie with superb acting and a fantastic musical score. His desire to get to know the father he never met gets the better of him and, with the help of a mysterious woman, he goes about fulfilling the wish. However, there is an unexpected catch....

But, now that you know what the movie is truly about, you can make that descision for yourself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Significant piece of history.
It can be disturbing sometimes, to see how some sides of our society have deteriorated in the 1990's. In the 1930's the kidnapping/killing of American hero aviator Charles Lindberg's baby represents a low point in our humanity.

Telling this story is tough, particularly since the evidence was all circumstantial. Whereas the 1996 film "Crime of the Century" approaches the after-the-fact investigation, with a perspective that Bruno Hauptmann (executed for the crime) indeed may have been wrongfully convicted, this film (from 1976) pursues a more clinical, step-wise, investigative approach. The dictum here seems to be to substantiate the verdict within the bounds of historical accuracy.

Nice turns by Cliff DeYoung as Charles Lindbergh, and Anthony Hopkins for his portrayal of Hauptmann (for which he won an EMMY). The presentation is a bit dry, confusing, and long (148mins). You might want to find a nice supplemental text to help you better understand the main players and the chronology of events.

But if you're unfamiliar with much of the circumstances you will definitely want to take a look. ...

Overall, an excellent film. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor amount of gore
Being a big fan of this genre of films, and Lucio Fulci. I expected much more from this film and was sadly dissapointed. It is very slow to get started, and there is actually very small amounts of gore. Although the head drilling scene is horrific, and one of the worst scenes that i have evr seen in a movie, very little else happens. The film struggles, and for a Zombie film there is a distinct lack of zombie action. I am a massive fan Zombie, and have just purchased the beyond and New York Ripper, and of all the Fulci films, City of the Living Dead is a poor effort

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
This movie was EXTRMELY slow but not to the point where it got boring but at times it really did. I was very upset about the gore scenes. The Gut spewing was good but the brain sqeeze and the ehad drill well wasnt very appeling. Everyone says "his brains are getting drilled out" when it is clearly through the top of his cheek. But there was some scenes that didnt make this bad. The movie gives you a dreadful feeling, which is very effective because movies arent like that these days.

Rated X for some repulsve gore and general creepyness

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars at best
Absolutely no sense can be made from this, but that is like so many other horror movies. The end makes you say "huh?" Their are much better Italian horror/zombie movies out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, could be better
Fulci's work is often misunderstood. I for one, love this movie, but this one is not fulcis best. None of it made sense, but if youre a fan of his films and campy eurohorror flicks, you'll love it regardless. I love the "intestine vomiting" and "drill" scenes. Those are classic. Also, I liked the "coffin rescue" scene. The plot... oh I forgot, there really isnt one. But, thats really dosent matter with a Fulci film. You have to have an open mind to understand his work. Its not just about endless violence and gore, theres much more to it. The lighting in this movie got annoying...The soundtrack sounded like Zombie's, but it still had the same haunting qualities. Especially the acoustic guitar, that added to it. These movies dont scare me really, but Im just a big fan of the genre. Put down "Scream" or "Haloween" and go pick up a copy of this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by fans of this garbage
Lucio Fulci might have made great films (that I haven't seen), but this sure as hell isn't one of them.

Not much of a story. Priest hangs himself and somehow opens up the gates of Hell and zombies slowly begin to squirm out and kill innocent townsfolk. The police nor the victim's families can understand the crime scenes but are sure that Bob, a rumored sex offender, must be the perpetrator of these bizarre deaths. Then a young woman and a reporter set out to find the city where the dead are awakening before All Saints Day, when a whole bunch of zombies will walk.

This movie is a major bore. The music score drags tediously through the death scenes, eliminating the possibility of a legitimate scare. Then the gore is so sloppy, that what many fanatics regard as intensely shocking, is just laughable and ineffective in enducing real nausea. Though, the same can't be said for the performances in the film. I did remember feeling queasy during nearly all dialogue-driven sequences (save some mild inconsequentials with Mary and the washed-up journalist).

To put it bluntly, there is a part of you (all those of you who are sane) who will wish you were being drilled yourself then endure the torture of having to watch this film. The only visceral quality in any way related to it is the contempt you'll feel for it, and especially for it's creator. ...

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a dollar
Considering the dvd-worthy titles out there awaiting digital transfer, I was a little surprised to find this 70s-era made-for-television movie in the $1 cut-out bin at a local used book store.
A WOMAN ACCUSED is unwatchable (never thought I'd say that about a movie that has Anthony Zerbe in it.) The problem is with the sound. Background noises and music swamp the dialogue track - somebody walking across a room sounds like the French army storming the gates of Moscow. A background violin drowns out whatever the actors are saying. Not being a lip-reader I couldn't finish this movie. If you're thinking about purchasing it, buy it from a reputable dealer that allows returns. ...

A great value at the price and if you have broadband internet access it can also be viewed for free from... ... Read more
