One of my favorite movies, Pump Up the Volume is a film that has a great message and a cool cast. Christian Slater is perfect as Harry/Mark, I think this is his best role, his second best being JD in Heathers. Samantha Mathis is also great in her role has Nora. It's a movie that has a message about censorship, teen suicide, pressures in society, freedom of expression and it also has a great soundtrack with lots of music Hard Harry plays on his pirate radio station. It's a movie that, even with it's slightly serious tone, makes you feel free and gives you a lift. I really think everyone should see this movie, it's one of my top 5. It also has tons of great quotes, especially things Harry says during his radio broadcasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Allan Moyle, of course its 5 stars
This man rocks. This is also the man behind Empire Records( a movie that if you want the full effect you need to get the special fan edition, the original was alllll cut up, the special edition is a bit longer and much better). He knows how to make a movie. He also likes to dig into punk rock in america. Allan Moyle rocks. Theres no way around it. Anything he does is great. Samantha Mathis and Christian Slater are also great.
For those who know nothing of this movie ,how have you missed it but its the story of a shy guy whos moved into a new town. his parents got him a short way radio station so that he can talk to his friends back home. he uses it to play his kind of music, speak of things that he wants to and basically break every censorship law in existance. After one of his listeners shoots himself while listening to the show mark finds himself being wanted for arrest. He must find a way to change the minds of a town of teenage radicals. its the soundtrack of the pixies, concrete blonde, the beastie boys and basically everything that is good. also in it is the story of a boy and a girl who are legends in their own mind who seek after eachother. (samantha mathis and christian slater) moura ( i think thats her name its been a while since ive seen this) and mark.

if you like this get "empire records". like i said though, its best to get it on dvd- special fan edition. the regular edition is great too but the 16 minuets of extra footage and deleted scenes make the movie. the extra footage is also put into the movie so its like watching a whole new movie. it rocks, i just bought the special edition yesterday..

3-0 out of 5 stars shallow teen flick weighed down by self-awareness
Christian Slater is Mark Hunter, a nerdy Eastern transplant to an Arizona school. Completely overlooked by his easy-going parents and everybody else, Hunter runs a pirate radio station under the name "Hard Harry". Every night, the hordes of students who think nothing of Hunter, listen for every syllable of Harry's voice. Hunter laces his subversive radio with mixtures of Lenny Bruce and the likes of "Concrete Blond", and everybody loves it. Everybody that is but the stern, authoritarian and uptight nerds who live for nothing but make life miserable for everybody younger than they are. Hunter is a man with ideas, but he can only express them through Harry - he alters his voice for radio, and uses an anonymous mail box to collect fan mail - keeping his double life a secret. Unfortunately, Nora (Samantha Mathis), an introverted intellectual teen who works the library at Hunter's school, pieces together the clues of Hunter's & Harry's shared ID.

Until then, "Pump" is sheer fun, an equal opportunity offender that doesn't strain your sense of morality. The adults are easy targets (even Hunter's parents are out to lunch - they never realize that their son's got enough electronic equipment to be the "Hard Harry" that everybody is talking about; the rest of the adults fail to consider Harry's message as a wake-up call). But the teens are also pretty wasted - for all of their energy, they never convert their power into a cause (the script wakes up near the end, and crafts a genuine cause involving manipulation of student scores - a revelation hit on by a "friendly" teacher played by Ellen Greene of "Little Shop of Horrors" fame). Instead of rising up against some perceived evil, Hunter's fellow teens merely become louder versions of the same annoying and cliquish high schoolers that we've seen in countless flicks (typically starring Corey's Feldman & Haim, and Larry Linville or Mary Woronov as the evil principal). Even after essentially telling his listeners what kind of person he really is, none seek him out. They're not after Hunter's reality, only Harry's wicked construction. It's good clean fun, and Harry's rants are so irresistible, you'd be willing to sit through about 2 hours of it. Though Hunter/Harry talks to the disaffection of Teen-America, little in the surrounding setting bears out how much trouble we're in (clue: though a bastion of adult-managed conformity, Hunter's school still keeps the library stocked with Lenny Bruce).

Unfortunately, in true shock-jock tradition, Harry/Hunter's words become entangled with tragedy when a local teen commits suicide shortly after calling in. Faster than you can say "Good Morning Vietnam", Hunter dumps than resurrects Harry's persona - only now he's on a mission, and "Pump" becomes more serious than it proves to deserve. Still missing the genuine story underneath the story, the teens become louder, and the adults more repressive (one of the teens is brutally assaulted by one of the school's employees) and the script more satisfied with how it delivers Harry's message than how it can convincingly craft one. At that point, "Pump" transforms from an engaging comedy into a weighed-down message movie, one that spoils the fun of both halves. By the end, you feel like you've been watching less of a movie, than a really long and loud "After School Special".

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk Hard / Amazing film
Powerful film, Christian Slater with an incredible performance as Mark Hunter a shy kid who moves to Arizona in a new school where he notices things are very wrong. At night he turns into Hard Harry on pirate radio with a system in his basement. He has the whole school glued to his radio show that comes on at 10:00pm every night. No one knows it's him. He begins to uncover shady doings with the teachers and releases it on the air along with some kickin tunes by great bands really good soundtrack. His radio skits are hilarious. A girl (Samantha Mathis) figures out his identity and really gets into him and helps him reveal the crooked teachers. An amazing movie about censorship and the courage to speak your voice against wrong authority. One of my favorite films in my top ten, essential to collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slater is the bombdigity
this movie is about Christian Slater who plays Hard Harry the pirate radio man of his pirated show, is magnificent and full of style. this is a movie that deals with rebellion and teen angst..kids who want to live their lives free of all the things they are imprisoned to do and they tune into Slater's show everynight including Samantha Mathis which this is her starring debut in a movie. Cheryl Pollack also sparks some hottstuff. slamming music and great moments make this one a masterpiece and a movie not to be forgotten, one of the best movies of 1990. note: Seth Green has a short but recognizable roll in here and so does Martin Landau's daughter Juliet Landau has a small role as well, both Green and Landau worked together again in the tv series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Green played Oz and Landau played Drusilla. make plans and rent this or buy this. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars YOUNG BORELOCKS
Having seen the first of this series, we could immediately guess when DeCocteau would use slow motion scenes where the studs walk around the campus. These scenes are ridiculously stupid, as they serve no means whatsoever.
Again, we see lots of studly beefcake in their underwear, and yes, Virginia, this is a homo-erotic movie. Didn't you notice the way Luc looked at John while he was supposedly screwing Torrie? And the scene in the swimming pool, kissing the tears. Come on, DeCocteau is obviously heading for the gay audience; even though there are not homosexual scenes, the inferences are there.
And the long drawn out rape scene is so stupid, the music is something out of the eighties and nineties, and there is not one genuine thrill in the whole movie.
And the ending....these kids have no remorse over the people that have died due to their own selfish motives.
Yuck, what a waste of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brotherhood II: Young Guys?
I must say that I am a guy who goes either way. I liked the first Brotherhood only because of Bradley Stryker. I think that this one is better than the first because the story seems better and there are a lot more hot guys. Just to name a few: C.J. Thomason "Marcus", Noah Frank "Harlan", Greg Lyczkowski "Randall", and Ari Welkom "Alex". One of my favorie scenes is in the locker room, another is in the pool. It's just too bad that Bradley could not return, then it would have been a grade A movie. I thought that the girls in this movie were a waste of time, none of them were hot. What we needed was Denise Richards or Britney Spears. I say rent or buy this movie for the guys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely misleaving Reviews
Ok, every single one of these reviews are EXTREMELY MISLEADING! I love horror. And I considered this to be a cool mediocre horror movie that I very much enjoyed. I am a straight male (not say I am homophobic or sexist cause actually I am about as far from those 2 things as you can possible get). Yet, I definitely enjoyed this flick. When I rented this film from bl0ckbuster there was absolutely no indication on the box that this could be considered a "homo-erotic" film but rather just seemed like a rad horror film that I would enjoy. AND I AM GLAD IT DIDN'T CAUSE I WOULD HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF IF IT DID! Truthfully, IT NEVER EVEN OCCURRED TO ME UNTIL I READ THESE REVIEWS that this could be considered a "homo-erotic" flick. Not to mention the fact that there IS female nudity in this movie! I would also like to point out that every character in this movie IS STRAIGHT! So, unless you're a right-wing bas:terd don't let the whole homo-erotic thing discourage you from getting this movie if you like the idea to it.

This movie is about three high school outcasts who all have a real problem with authority (which I like) by the names of Marcus Ratner, John Van Owen and Matt Slaten. Yet despite they're individualistic attitude, the narrator, Marcus longs to fit in. Then they met Luke. He's the new kid in town. Luke (a warlock) promises them that they could have anything they want, rule over everyone, have girls, money, power, everything they've ever dreamed of and more! All they have to do is pledge loyalty to Luke and each other (the brotherhood) and break all ten commandments as well as various other rituals. However, what he told them were lies. As the movie progresses it is quite clear that Marcus and his two friends are not getting stronger but rather Luke is getting stronger and John and Matt are practically becoming slaves to Luke's will. And the only one willing to realize this is good old Marcus. Suddenly, loneliness and jock bullies become the least of Marcus's high problems.

If you are a fan of horror, I suggest you definitely check this great independent film. However, if you are new to horror, this is in no way the place to start. I highly recommend "Christina's House", "Ghost Ship" and "American Werewolf in Paris". But whatever you do, steer clear of the independent flick "Wendigo". Peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best film, a unique genre, and talent!
With great respect for all opinions expressed and implied by many of the "reviewers" on Amazon and those critics in print:

The fact is simple. What David DeCocteau is doing here is taking a cheesy, 5-10 day shoot horror genre and making something a little different out of it... twisting the traditional T&A into P&A (a humorous comment made by an earlier reviewer, and it is totally true!, I think a fair amount of good judgement is required before purchasing this DVD.

Does this film cater to the young female audience? YES!
Does it cater to a gay audience? YES!
Does it require or demand any substantial brain matter or deep analysis to enjoy or otherwise "figure out" this flick! Heck NO!

We are dealing here with cheesy horror and a small tad of "sexploitation", even though, in a review of the Brotherhood I, I stated that David DeC. was not being a sexploitation artist, it seems that it is now necessary for me to correct that statement, as to avoid confusion...

First... there is absolutely NO GRATUITOUS NUDITY. There are NO "in-your-face" sexual contents in this film. There IS however, a plain and simple fact: This film, like several others by David DeC. have a blatant, and, gratefully unashamed, appreciation for the male form, and the unique sensibility to delve into the taboo areas of male-bonding, body worship, and the ability for lead characters of the male genre to exercise psychological control over their male counterparts. This clearly makes some of David DeC.'s works "HOMOEROTIC". This may make some uncomfortable, it may also stimulate others.

I humbly disagree with those who may object to this film because of the homoeroticism as deeply as I disagree with those who find that they have been misled into thinking this title is a "gay film". It is neither! It is simply a different way of dealing with the genre of fast produced, low budget, horror films that this reviewer, as a lover of the horror genre, was pleasantly surprized by!

This film is well acted with a usual lineup of young TALENTED males of whom Dave DeC. is well known to acquire. I see nothing wrong with giving a handsome young man a "first break" in the film industry... because it seems that David DeC. does that quite a bit, and the results are usually rather good! (Frankly, I am glad that David hired them first... what is the other possible option for a young talent? Without mentioning it, smart ones know the answer!)

In particular, the perfomance by C.J. Thomason should be noted. The guy was only 18 when this was shot, and it was his first role in any film production. I wish him the ABSOLUTE BEST! There were several scenes in this film that other young actors had problems with,(specifically, the locker room, intimidation scene)which C.J. handled BRILLIANTLY! (C.J. was not the first actor to audition for this role, but his ability to handle it resulted in his hiring just two days before shooting began). (Reference source: David DeCocteau's commentary on the double collection dics of "The BrotherHood")

If you simply can not stand the sight of bonding between young men, then do not buy this title. If you want love scenes that are explicitly gay or a 100% gay film then don't buy it either. (There are so many other titles out there.. but if you are a true collector of gay-themed cinema, I would urge you to not pass this one up!) And, certainly, if you want a complex horror movie with all the trimmings, (say the like of "Poltergeist" or "Alien" or the "Shining") this is not the film for you either. [ A special note to readers of this review who are GLBTQ: David DeC. is so much smarter than one could think... In the "BrotherHood I" it was necessary to share "blood" as part of the plot... In this 2nd film (note: NOT a sequel) there exists a similar element, which the director was keen to point out: the "sharing of tears" is necessary to be part of the second "brotherhood". So we have BLOOD and then TEARS. Both, bodily fluids, but the parallel between the two speaks volumes. I suspect David DeCocteau is sending a message to all GLBTQ people... at least, to those of us who lived through the horror of the 1980's and the pan-demic of AIDS. So... I will not simply discard this film as without any complexity of thought.. in fact,, I think the director knows exactly what he is doing.. since parts 3 and 4 are now in production, we should all see within the year if there is such a depth to my thinking. For now, it makes sense to me! ]

But... if you want a film that is off the edge a bit, has no great depth of thought, but rather a simple storyline (predictable), smacks clearly of homoeroticism, has beautiful male leads (that are talented) and maybe redfines the word "THRILLER" (only becuase it may "thrill" the viewer in a unique way that it thrilled *this* viewer)... then I think it is worth investigating!

Respectfully submitted.

Bob

1-0 out of 5 stars Lamer than the First
Okay, we all know that sequels tend to be lame. This one is no exception. Unfortunately, it's a lame sequel to a lame movie. Talk about the law of diminishing returns.

Producer/director David DeCoteau and screenwriter Matthew Jason Walsh reunite for the second installment of their Brotherhood series. However, other than recycled sets and recycled themes, there is nothing to connect this movie to The Brotherhood--except actor Forrest Cochran who is theoretically playing the same character, but as I don't remember the character at all in the first movie, it's hard to call it a true connection.

As with the first, it is a thrill-less thriller and about as "straight" a piece of homoeroticism as you're likely to encounter.

Actually, to be fair, the underlying premise of this installment is slightly stronger than the first, even if it isn't related, and the plot is a little more interesting. However, the execution is weaker. The acting is adequate, with only Sean Ferris exhibiting any real charisma. This is unfortunate, as the whole point of the character Luc is supposed to be his incredible charisma, and Forret Cochran doesn't have the presence to pull it off.

This time, the story takes place at a private high/prep school, although it appeared to me to be the same location on which the original was shot. The student body is keep in a perpetual state of anxiety by a quartet of shirtless bullies. Three outsiders are the primary focus of the bullies. New student Luc arrives and offers the outsiders a way to get even which involves swimming in their boxer briefs and sitting in a satanic circle while wearing boxer briefs.

The quotient of screen time of guys in boxer briefs is higher than the first, and there are two female quasi-leads, doubling the number from the previous installment. The camera work and the editing is slightly better than the first, but there are still times when DeCoteau would better serve his audience by pulling the camera back and using more fluid editing.

It's weak, but what truly appalled me was the amorality of the ending. As a reviewer, I don't think it's fair for me to give away the ending, and I won't, but I have to admit that it really angered me. Screenwriter Walsh hasn't thought through the ramifications of his characters' actions, and this left me quite annoyed.

Another place where Young Worlocks matches its predecessor is in the lack of any bonus material on the DVD. The movie is presented in 1.33:1 screen aspect ratio. As this was probably shot for direct-to-video, I don't know if there was a version with a wider screen aspect ratio. ...

3-0 out of 5 stars a real thriller
A beautiful blond female cop investigates a string of murders, all blond victims. Interesting plot twists, keeps you guessing to the end. A fair number of nude scenes, for the guys. Light entertainment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the high price of the DVD !
First of all, Columbia-Tristar released a Shannon Tweed double feature for twenty dollars list price while charging this thirty dollars. Why is that?

On to the story, Shannon Tweed is a cop investigating a serial killer who killed high price prostitutes. She ends up falling in love with the main suspect. Shannon only have a couple love scenes which are OK. The rest of the girls are quite beautiful. But if you expect to see a lot of Shannon you will be disappointed as her first naked scene appears at 43 minutes mark.

The DVD is OK. The full screen picture is decent for this B movie and the sound track sounded like mono but again not much action in this one. Unless you are a diehard Shannon Tweed's fans who have to have this DVD right away, I would suggest you wait until the price drop or get a used copy as this one is not as good as Shannon Tweed's early movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars dead sexy
The movie was pretty good overall. Shannon is ok for the character she plays (cop). The scenes are sexy with Shannon giving it all as she does in all her films. If you are a Shannon Tweed lover it's worth it to get. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff from the Playboy/Eros folks!
This is high-class softcore erotica from the people that gave us some of the best in the genre (like "Allyson is Watching", "Forbidden Highway", and "House of Love". This one has lots of beautiful women and a nice range of hot action, including a hot-oil massage session in which the masseuse first lathers up two women and then turns her third massage into some sensuous girl-on-girl lovemaking.

Another plus is that the heroine, her friends, and their masseuse are all natural -- a nice change from the pneumatic, overinflated Pamela Anderson lookalikes that populate too many of these films. This one is well worth seeing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Shauna O'Brien Fans, These are Not for You...
I bought two of these movies (Cinemax Originals) when they first came out in Hong Kong last year. Although the credits list as: Holly Sampson, Shauna O'Brien..Shauna does not have any scenes in this. Her character is in a wheelchair communicating the story through email, and has a total of about 15 seconds screen time..Im not quite sure what thats' all about. The only erotica scenes feature the usual boring Holly Sampson and plastic women who could'nt follow in Shauna's footsteps if they [wanted to]. Even though I would never be one to say anything bad about any of Shauna O'Brien's movies...this is kinda misleading to her fans. Trust me, skip this and stick to her older, more thankful movies like 'Scandal-The Big Turn On' and 'Platinum Blonde'...until hopefully she comes back and makes something new for us.

2-0 out of 5 stars HOLLY SAMPSON
Viewers may not be aware that Holly has appeared in some hard core productions such as "A Slave to Fashion" where goes by the name of Nicholete.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time.
Don't be fooled by the name Emmanuelle or the "unrated" thing, you'll be totally disappointed. Not even Shauna O'Brien could save this turkey. A recent release, "Emmanuelle in Space", was much better. However, if you're seriously curious about the legendary Emmanuelle, go for the "real" series with Sylvia Krystel ("Emmanuelle", 1974, "Emmanuelle 2" - "Joys of a Woman", 1975, "Emmanuelle 3" - "Emmanuelle Forever", 1993). Two of them are on DVD now. ... Read more
