4-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing "Goliath Awaits" needs a complete DVD release
In 1939, luxury passenger liner Goliath was torpedoed and sank with presumably all hands lost. Discovered in 1981, the salvage crew was a bit startled to find some 337 survivors aboard. It turns out that the heroic crew took measures to "hold the water back" and special pumps were rigged to clean their remaining oxygen. Once aboard, the salvagers discover a quasi-utopian society run by Captain Christopher Lee - but his dicatatorship has more than a few dark secrets.

Engrossing undersea adventure stretches credibility paper-thin but certainly scores points for originality. I haven't seen the condensed video version, but try to catch the complete version on TV or cable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Short
The movie was a very good undersea drama that was 3 hours and 20 minutes long. "Showtime" and "The Movie Channel" used to run this movie in it's full length with a break in the middle. The VHS and Laserdisc versions of this movie have been cut and edited so poorly it ruins the movie. This movie should be released in it's full length. (Maybe they will do it for DVD). Let's hope so. I rated it a two only because of the bad editing in the Video. The movie itself get's a Five!

4-0 out of 5 stars great under sea drama
I seen most of this movie many years ago. On a tv mini series. It was great. lots of twists. Been waiting to get a copy for myself so I can see the few parts I have missed. This movie has kept me waiting to see the whole thing for over 15 years

3-0 out of 5 stars Goliath Awaits still waiting!
I was extremely disappointed with the video copy of "Goliath Awaits". The original movie - I believe it was made for television - was more detailed. The video, in fact, deletes an entire section about the importance of the documents that went down on the Goliath and the U.S. senator that went down with the ship. It leaves a blank space in the film. I wish they had left it alone and made the video the same as the film version. The story is interesting and with the fairly recent discovery of the Titanic time relevant. What if someone had survived underwater? I honestly not sure that whoever edited this film actually watched it first. Bad editing of the plot gives this a 3.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Incrediable Yarn
What would have happened had Dr. Robert Ballard found people living on the Titanic? It is with this premise in mind that one should consider the story of the Goliath. Torpedoed and sunk in the opening days of WWII the British passenger liner Goliath went down with some 300 people aboard. Now skip to 1981 when Mark Harmon (in one of his earliest leading roles) and Robert Forester lead a salvage expition to the ship only to find themselves involved in international intrigue, murder and deep sea adventure culimnating in a struggle between those that want to leave the Goliath and those that wish to stay with their leader (played superbly by Christopher Lee) that is very entertaining. Look for John Ratzenberger in a pre-CHEERS role as one of the salvage divers. While some of the acting seems forced and some of the dialog is awkward, the movie is entertaining and enjoyable and should not be taken too seriously. But by all means wait for the price to go down. I think you will enjoy this movie. It is different. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wilder West
This video should still be available for all of us Wild Wild West and Robert Conrad fans out there. How anyone could think this was a terrible movie is beyond me. Of course, it was campy and the jokes were silly but such was the case in the popular show of the 60s. The video should be available if for no other reason than to see Conrad and Martin together again. What charisma they had... and so much better than the horrible motion picture rip off with Will Smith. That was a disaster! This reunion movie is a treasure and a remembrance of an earlier, simpler time when great actors like Conrad and Martin ruled the TV screens. It gets five stars for the actors and a five simply because it is Wild Wild West. Who cares if its a bit campy - some people are just too critical and take everything too seriously - you need to sit back, relax and let go for a while! Sometimes, things are meant just to be "fun." Any hope of this ever being re-released? I'd sure like a copy of this video. Thanks!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing "West"
"More Wild Wild West" (1980) lacked the imaginative qualities that made the TV series so memorable. Spoofing this classic show was a big mistake, which director Burt Kennedy never seemed to grasp. Once again, it's great seeing Robert Conrad and Ross Martin reprise their famous roles, but the script is silly and this TV movie plays everything for laughs. However, Jonathan Winters does make an interesting villain. Overall, a missed opportunity.

1-0 out of 5 stars How the West Was Lost - Part 2
The dreadful "Wild, Wild West Revisited" (1978) garnered great ratings, no doubt because fans of the original show turned in to see their old pals, West and Gordon, pull off another old West espionage caper. But that ill-fated reunion movie was a campy misinterpretation of the original show. Think mid-1960s, but think "Batman," not "Wild, Wild West." Hollywood interpreted the nostalgia for the old series that still generated ratings 15 years later as a referendum for the new format. The result: Jonathan Winters as a mad scientist who, having turned himself invisible, threatens to provoke a world war by playing mischievous pranks on diplomats who will blame them on their colleagues from other nations. Winters might have actually been a more threatening villain if he had portrayed his hillbilly Maude Frickert personna of old. He plays the scientist so broadly that it would have been rejected as a disembodied voice on a low-budget Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Like West and Gordon, he constantly cracks jokes that lampoon the story and characters of the movie. Unfortunately West and Gordon are the butt of many jokes, as was the case in the last ill-fated reunion romp, including an idiotic scene in which they flee on zebras. The zebra scene might have worked in the old show had it been designed as exotic innovation, but here it's just another cheap joke. The ratings for this yarn were so low that no one talked about another reunion. Reportedly, it finally began to occur to the writers that viewers tuned into the previous turkey because they wanted to see another classic adventure -- and failed to tune into this sequel having been disillusioned by its predecessor. May we all do likewise, unless you're willing to stomach the ponderous shortcomings of this film for a chance at old-home week with West and Gordon. At best, this reunion will be bitter sweet. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY MOVIE FOR ALL TO SEE.
Carole Davis, who played Dominique was the best part of the movie. Her amazing looks would make even the most loyal companion cheat. Its a shame she got hit in the face with the pie.

5-0 out of 5 stars shrimp on barbie dvd specifications
for anyone who likes this movie, you'll buy it regardless. however. it is in 16x9 format(standard), it is not the widescreen version. as far as special features go, it has an option for 5:1 digital audio. this feature is not accessable thru the "audio set-up" option, you have to go into "special features" befor you start the movie if you prefer to listen to it this way. other features include the theatrical trailer and about a 1/2 dozen different tv commercials promoting this movie. enjoy a very funny cheech as a "leading man"?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Cheech's Better Movies
I LIKE this one. Cheech plays, of course, a Mexican who ends up in Australia of all places, working in a Mexican Restaurant. He disappears on his partner, who throughout the movie pleads for him to return. Turns out he has been hired by an Australian lady whose father owns everything and who she wants to put down. She already has a boy friend who she plans to marry, but hires Cheech to impersonate her boy friend to her father, telling Cheech to be as obnoxious and crude as possible. Cheech does his best, but Dad overhears the deal and now knows what is going on. So he tells her he approves of her choice and asks, "when's the wedding?" Well this puts her in a strange position, and, as the story unfolds, she becomes more and more attracted to Cheech and less attracted to the man she was going to marry. He punches Cheech in the eye and she finds out some dirt on him and, well, I won't spoil the ending, but things workout and all ends well. Not a moving production, no earth shattering revelations, no profound statements, just a cute little movie that for awhile anyway, makes you laugh and for a little while helps you forget all your other troubles. Well worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars you'll laugh your "culo" off
I hope I spelled that right...
I ordered the film from Amazon and am about half way thru watching it. I had to post this message now because I haven't laughed so hard in years as Cheech gives a Mexican wedgy to a bunch of upper crust Aussie stuffed shirts.
The rebellious daddy's girl (who is really as headstrong as her business tycoon father) is very well played by Emma Sams. As is the nerdy horse-loving cousin.
Although this movie isn't Citizen Kaine, you can still see some pretty good writing and insight into the main characters portrayed.
I'd recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel good movie
This was not an Oscar Award winning movie, but if you take it for what I think it was ment to be, it was excellent. This movie is entertaining and you get that old warm and fuzzy feeling in the end because the good guy gets the gal. Excellent repeat viewing value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Illusions
A visionary, dark, erotic and disturbing tale that is definitely filled with "Illusions." Heather Locklear does a fabulous job of portraying a former mental patient, Jan, who is released after her nightmares and hallucinations that got her put away, come to a sudden stop. Jan's husband Greg (Robert Carradine) has just purchased a new house in the mountains, so the happily married couple moves there. However, Jan's happiness is spoiled when Greg's sister, Laura (Emma Samms) comes for a visit. Jan's nightmares and hallucinations begin once again as she realizes that Laura and Greg might have a rather different brother-sister relationship than most, and that Laura is trying to drive Jan insane. Overall, "Illusions" is a highly original, intense drama that is similar to a character study, as we see the emotional ups-and-downs of Jan. The narration by Jan may sometimes be distracting and slightly annoying, but it does help to fill some plot holes not fixed by the scripted dialogue. All the performances are excellent, most notably by Locklear and Samms.
The script by Peter Colley (who adapted from his stageplay "I'll be Back before Midnight" to make this film) is extremely thrilling, sexy and full of intense situations. Director Victor Kulle makes this, as already stated, a visonary experience, making the entire film look like a dream. I bought "Illusions" from a local video store, having seen the reviews and cases for it on the internet. It's surprisingly a very good movie, considering the low budget it was on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch
"Pretend You Don't See Her" is the best of the Mary Higgins Clark Mystery Movie adaptations. The openings are great fun -- with a rolling pastiche of "Red Shoe Diaries" cum mystery images (hee hee) and a glittering skyline, which sadly was missing from the latest installment in the series. In this film, Emma Samms plays a real estate agent who becomes embroiled in a murder mystery when her client's daughter is run over by a car and her client confides in her her belief that it was murder; then Samms ends up unwittingly witnessing the murder of the client and being entrusted with one of the biggest clues to the mystery -- the daughter's bloody journal pages. As a result, she is thrown into the witness protection program and is at great peril as the killer searches to find her. She also determines to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Samms gives a good performance in the lead, and the whole production is engaging and absorbing. There are plenty of red herrings, a good narrative, great pacing, and delicious close calls. I haven't read any of the Mary Higgins Clark novels, so I can't compare movie to book, but as a viewing experience, this one holds up well. It really is the best of the lot, thus far, and far ahead of the pack at that. I've watched it several times. (Next best in the series is "Lucky Day.") Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I loved the fact that it starred two of my favorite sitcom stars, Keshia Knight Pulliam and Michael Gross. This film is exciting from beginning to end. It's all about a young girl, living in the late 80s, who wants to be treated like a grown-up. She is magically transported to Camelot, where she stuns everyone with her futuristic contraptions (Polaroid camera, tape recorder, etc.), gains popularity, and helps King Arthur fight the bad guys. It's a really fun movie that's great for kids. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great swashbuckler film with a great cast!
A great movie adapted from the novel by Barbara Cartland starring Hugh Grant, Lysette Anthony, Emma Samms, Claire Bloom, Oliver Reed, Michael York... the list goes on. The story of a highwayman (Grant) who saves a damsel in distress (Anthony) in 17th century England. Lavish costumes, good sword play, and an intriguing story. One of my favorites, even if it is from the 80s. This is one of Grant's earlier films, before coming to Hollywood.

3-0 out of 5 stars a remake of robin hood but still a great love story
i think that if your looking for a love story to watch on a lonely night or just to make you feel like your in love then this is a good movie. but if you are looking for a movie that requires thought or any brain power then this is not a movie for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars not even worth buy from the discount bin
...Alas, the print quality is terribly bad. It looks like it was made from a video tape that's been copied over and over and over - dark, fuzzy, flattened colors. So, I couldn't even appreciate the lovely costumes and settings.

The story is so badly predictable and corny, the dialog is stilted, and the editing is terribly choppy. It's silly. It's boring. Not even a terrific cast (Hugh Grant, Oliver Reed, Michael York to name a few) could lift this one out of the doldrums.

Pass on this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty to look at but not much else.
A romance set in 17th century England should be irresistable to me; especially one with such gorgeous costumes and scenery as this. However, this movie not only suffers from an insipid, silly storyline but from bad dialog as well. All you have to do is watch the very first scene of the movie for a shining example of truly awful dialog. I read Barbara Cartland novels when I was in my early to mid-teens and the story reminds me of some of the romantic tales my gal pal and I would cook up just for fun. Even so, I will give the movie two stars for its beautiful and mostly accurate costumes, especially the women's. It is also nice but rather surprising to see revered veteran actors like John Mills, Robert Morley and Gordon Jackson playing smaller roles in the movie.

Unfortunately the video tape quality is awful and was almost unwatchable in the beginning. Luckily the tape was a gift and I didn't spend a dime on it!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a stinker!!!
I wasn't expecting high art when I bought this movie but I was at least expecting good acting considering the cast. This movie was so bad it was funny. I watched with a friend and we ended up making comments similar to those on Mystery Science Theater just to stay mildly entertained. The story was lame (to be expected) but the acting was lousy with the exception of Oliver Reed who was pretty good as the bad guy. All this on top of a truly hokey sound track. I have seen other movies in this genre, but YIKES this one takes the cake as the worst by far! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly worth a 99 cent 5 day rental...
This a very low budget film set in a space ship with 8 crew searching for a new planet for humans to move to. Earth in bad shape with greenhouse warming and war looming. Crew awakes from hyper-sleep after 100 years under (as is family at home). Captian is dead. More deaths follow. Where these all accidents or is there a killer among them. Very low budget, basically only the sets on the ship. Soundtrack unexciting. Two seperate scenes of nude characters make rating R. No swearing that I remember. No sex scenes either. No pubic hair. Steals ideas from several big screen movies any sci-fi fan will have seen. If its on commercial TV, probably not worth watching. Slightly better than "BATS", "ATTACK OF KILLER TOMATOES" and "ARRIVAL II"...

2-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and yawny
This is a sort of Ten Little Indians set in space (a very overused plot engine). Naturally, the astronauts disappear one by one leading to a "climatic" ending sequence, which will show you that you have just wasted a portion of your lives. The sets, the acting, the plot, everything is very, very tired, redundant, and surprisingly turgid for the nightmare this is. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
Now,this movie was great. Diffeent from the original thumbelina, but s entertainig. The grandkids really enjoyed it. At first a little scary, the mole is ugly, but the more they watched, the more they ejoyed. Good job.

5-0 out of 5 stars it was awsome
the movie is soo cute. i loved it!!! the songs are great special the welcome to my hole!but most of all i liked the songi am so all alone! i think even for a cartoon tom was a cutie pie!i hope the soundtrack is out so i can get it!i watch it about 20 times is good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie for kids!
Adventurous, funny, melodic, nice story-line. Great movie for those lazy afternoons. See for yourself. Excellent performance by Jennifer Lowe Hewitt in "I am alone" and "I was once alone". You will love it!

(If you don't then you are definitely TOO OLD. Don't watch PG-13s.)

The less-detailed animation is the only cons I could find. My daugther and I loved watching little Tumbelina's journey to find her love and home. The story contains humour (the two moles are strikingly similar (and grotesque) to Pumba and Timon in Lion King), the little people village somehow feels like Snow White and Seven Dwarfs. The songs are worth listening to couple times. You will like the option to play them again (and with lyrics!).

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow..what a bad movie
This movie fails at everything it attempts to achieve. I watched Tom Thumb and Thumbelina after reading several bad reviews. I am very happy to say that it lived up to each and every terrible review. The songs (specifically: one, two cha cha cha) are very poor. And Disney should learn that 3 songs does not make a movie a musical. Secondly the plot is boring, confusing, uneventful, and full of holes. The characters themselves are lifeless. Also, someone should tell Disney that children do not understand Richard III references. The animation is also really awful. At times it becomes blurry and does not result in the creation of distance which it attempts to create. Basically the animation leaves you dizzy and straining to see the picture. In addition, the characters are badly drawn and the animals are completely pathetic.I pity Elijah Wood, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and the others involved in the creation of this movie nothing could have saved it. The only positive aspect of this movie is that it is so bad you can laugh at it. So for all you college students, adults, and teenagers looking for a good laugh...this is your movie. By the way you can sing along with One, Two, Cha, Cha, Cha after movie. But there's no commentary on the DVD..hmmm... I wonder why?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Family Fun!
My family is full of Disney fans. We have all of the straight to video sequels. We've enjoyed most of them, but they've begun to lose their freshness. We were thrilled to find that Disney was finally making a straigt to video animated film that wasn't a sequel to anything. (for those who don't know, the current animated version of Thumbelina was made by Fox) It's actually a new story, also. Tom Thumb and Thumbelina were kidnapped as children by the owner of a sideshow. Tom escaped and lived a happy life on a farm, but Thumbelina was forced to be a freak in the show. She grows up to be a young woman and is able to escape, meanwhile, Tom says good bye to the family who took him in. When the two stumble across eachother, they set out on a journey for others their size. On there way, they encounter mean bugs, a boy who wants to collect them, and an evil mole king bent on marrying Thumbelina. Jennifer Love Hewit(Party of Five, Heartbrakers) and Elija Wood (Huck Finn, Lord of the Rings) provide the voices for Tom and Thumbelina. The songs are bareable, but you definately wouldn't want to own the soundtrack. There aren't any special features on the DVD unless you count sing a long songs a special feature. It is also in fullscreen and has a 2.0 soundtrack. For the bad songs and lack of special features, I give it 4 stars. Your family will love it. ... Read more

You keep waiting for what should be a wild comedy to really take off, but this film sputters along without truly achieving liftoff. John Candy plays a writer for a TV soap opera whose life is as lovelorn as his show is packed with passion. A bump on the head, however, and it's Wizard of Oz time--except that Candy is now trapped in the world of his soap, with the advantage of knowing everyone's secrets, as well as what's going to happen next. Better yet, he's able to strike romantic sparks with characters whose actors (in real life) won't give him the time of day. But cuddly Candy isn't much of a romantic lead and the writing is too flat to let him really shine, even among a cast that includes Raymond Burr, David Rasche, and Emma Samms. --Marshall Fine ... This is the most hilarious movie, with John CAndy stuck inside a terrible soap opera!!HE can control events and turn himself into a hero by using his magic typewriter. It is sooooo funny, the characters are idiots, like the doctor who keeps yelling,"I..am a...medical..DOCTOR!!!',and the man whos being poisoned and his hair comes out and then he wipes his finger over his eyebrow and it comes off in his hand and then his teeth fall into the sink and then he tries to shoot his sister, who is poisoning him, only it isn't really his sister because she was swapped at birth so he accidentally shoots his real sister, and he cant talk properly anymore and so he says,"Ah,shthit." LOLOL.My mum is grossed out by the man who is losing his bits so she taped over the movie once.I love it!!!Its soooo funny!

its easy to state facts when you talk about the quality of a power tool or a tv. but when it comes to things like movies and music, its all a mater of opinion. my idea of a great movie might be your idea of the worst movie ever made. so its not a good idea to buy or not buy a movie based on someones opinion of it. i liked this movie in fact i just watched this movie 5 min before writing this. if you are not sure if its your cup of tea rent it before buying it. i seen it 10 times over the years and i still like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Comedy.
John Candy was one of the true greats of modern comedy. Unfortunately, he spent most of his career performing in poorly written movies which did not allow him to display his comic genius. DELIRIOUS doesn't fit that bill, however, neither does it achieve the heights that it could have.

In DELIRIOUS, Candy plays a soap opera writer/producer of the hottest show on televsion. He finds himself constantly battling the other producers who always want to revamp the show and quite frankly would like to get rid of him. While driving in the country for a weekend vacation, Candy is in a car accident and awakens to find himself in a real version of the fictional town he helped create on his soap.

The movie is a lot of fun and toys with an interesting idea. However, much more could have been done with the "life in a soap opera" concept to have capitalized upon Candy's talent. The movie has an impressive cast including Mariel Hemingway, Robert Wagner, and Raymond Burr.

Overall a charming little movie that's a lot of fun. Great for an evening of escapist delight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent John Candy Flick!
This is a truly great movie! I am a very critical person and one who believes that nothing is perfect, but I loved nearly everything about this movie! It's a well-written and enjoyable film from the late, great John Candy and it also features a great cast of Mariel Hemingway, Emma Samms, Raymond Burr and Charles Rocket. It is a very well cast movie. The one thing I wasn't so thrilled about in this movie was the ending. It was a bit of an obvious ending for any film, although a heart-warming one at that...

4-0 out of 5 stars Candiavellian Romp
I have to admit that good writing or not this is one of my favorite escape movies and I wish it would come out in DVD. My liking it has something to do with John's use of the typewriter and his ability to change the direction of the characters through the machine. Once he damages the typewriter he needs to make a technical sevice call to get it going again. You can't beat that. We even get to see a perplexed Robert Wagner and the rest of a great cast. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Remake From The Deep
This is not the original starring Doug McClure, but the remake staring David Carradine and Emma Samms. While not the original, the story is pretty much the same (complete with some footage from the original added in).

A small town is the setting as a fish plant is targeted for dumping chemicals in the local waters. The fish have gotten bigger as a result but something else has gone wrong as well. The chemicals being dumped are needed by a new resident in the waters, a fish man created by the military.

David Carradine is the head of the plant and is trying to stop his employees from dumping. To make matters worse, one of the animal rights activists has a thing for his daughter. Then people start to be killed in the water. A shark is blamed but it does not explain why only male bodies have been found. None of the females have been recovered. Then most of the animal rights people, and Carradine's daughter, are killed or taken one night.

No one seems to know what is going on except for reporter Emma Samms. But then a survivor shows up and the town finds out that there is something fishy going on. Samms is really a doctor who helped create the creatures. She is trying to stop them and exposes the military involvement. But one survivor points to the possibility of others. The military does not care, they will just blow everything up.

Good ending, nice twist and I liked the way the creatures don't occur just from dumping, but were lab created (a slight improvement over the original). Still, it is a nice remake but I found it hard to take David Carradine seriously (I kept seeing flashes of Revenge of the Nerds). Definitely one to see if you like Roger Corman or a good creature flick.

1-0 out of 5 stars fish men want our women!
Beware all ye expecting the 1980 version of this movie starring Doug McClure! This is a 1996 remake for cable (Showtime), its' real title being Roger Corman Presents 'Humanoids From the Deep'.

This drecky mess stars Emma Samms and David Caradine, along with a number of less noticeable actors who currently reside in the 'where are they now' file. The plot involves a big business/government cover up (gee, how very original), toxic chemicals in the ecosystem, and a small, coastal town under siege by hungry, mutated fish men.

Apparently the government contracted a private company to splice the genetic material of fish with that of convicted felons in an effort to create a race of amphibian soldiers. Sounds like a reasonable idea, right? Anyway, the government isn't happy with the results, so they terminate the project, but some of the fish men escape.

Cut to a small, coastal fishing village. Canco, the major fish catching and canning company in the area, is responsible for dumping a biohazardous growth hormone into the waters to embiggen the fish. Actually, it's one particularly dislikable guy named Bill who is responsible. David Caradine, who plays Wade Parker, also works for the company (seems like he and the evil Bill run the company), finds out what's going on and demands that the dumping stop. Bill agrees, but only to placate Wade as there's good money to be made in those big fish.

Enter a nameless eco-group, whose leader, Matt, is played by Justin Walker. This group knows chemicals are being dumped into the waters, and are protesting Canco. Later they videotape Bill and his cronies at work, pollutin' the waters. No real attempt was made by Bill or his evil lackeys to cover up what they were doing, as they did it in broad daylight, with huge, yellow drums with biohazardous markings clearly visible, so it's no big surprise they got caught on tape. Also, it seems this growth hormone is attracting the mutated fish men, as they need the chemical to survive.

After the death of a little boy, completely ripped off from a much better movie, the fish men start to make their presence known. Their attacks become more brazen, and we soon find out that they are kidnapping, not killing, local females for mating purposes. Yuck....Damn those amorous fish men, stealin' our wimmen!

Man this movie had a lot of problems...worst being the inept direction. The actors, most being fairly capable, seemed totally mismanaged. An extremely poor script and plot certainly didn't help matters any. The thing that really annoyed me was how so many technical aspects were glossed over, like the DNA splicing, effects of toxic chemicals on the environment, the military involvement, etc. No real thought was given to any of these aspects, instead skimming the surface of theses many themes to aid (hinder) the plot along. Mutations, DNA splicing, and conspiracies being the crux of the movie, it's painfully obvious that the writer threw this stuff in the story, without having any real knowledge to support it. And the sets...the interiors were so obviously fake, making parts of the movie seem like a high school production. The characters' motivations are all over the place, causing the actors to appear indifferent to events that should mean more to them than they do. A specific example is when Wade's teenage daughter is taken by the fish men, and presumed dead. Wade doesn't seem all that broken up about it. At some points he does seemed upset, but given that your offspring may have been eaten by a mutated fish man, I'd figured you'd be pretty horrified and suitably despondent, but not so here.

On a positive note, the creatures did look kinda cool, but it was obvious that the suits (no CGI here) allowed for very little mobility, hindering the action in their limited screen time. The suits were fairly detailed, but I think if they were simplified, allowing more mobility, they would have been much more effective. The gore was needless, and the blood looked painfully fake.

In the cheap thrills department, there are a couple of brief nudity shots, if that's your thing, but they were unnecessary, and only served to further exemplified the total lameness of the movie. "Hey, we know this movie stinks, but here's some breasts!" Emma Samms, never got au natural, retaining some of her dignity, but not much.

There are some extras, including a director's commentary (!?) which I was interested in hearing, but was unable to sit through this movie again so soon. Also, there are some trailers for other movies, including one for a movie called Watchers 3. In watching this, I was amazed at how blatantly this feature ripped off the movie Predator. I don't mind producers copping ideas off better movies, but at least try to make it seem not so glaringly obvious. Geez...

5-0 out of 5 stars Have you seen the original version lately?
Perhaps memories fade, because I just viewed both versions of "Humanoids From The Deep" and found the original to be unwatchable. There is a reason Barbara Peters has not become a successful director, and it's because her film is uneven and flat. If it is the amateurish quality that makes people yearn for the original in order to laugh at it rather than be engrossed in the narrative, then those people should watch the original. For those with the expectation of getting caught up in a scary story, the remake is the only film to watch. It follows a similar story but has better caliber actors and some genuinely funny moments like Clint Howard observing that Justin Walker is the only one who survived a monster attack and asking "Did you know these monsters?" See only the remake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello Emma!
Emma Samms is great in this picture. Robert Carradine also stars in this story of mutated "fish men" that attack a small village. The picture has some great scares and a real good sense of humor. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Remake Which Should Never Have Been Made
Purely by accident, I ended up with this movie. I was after the original.
Anyway, the movie shamelessly pulls scenes from the original 1980's version. The original was scary, this one is . . . stupid. It follows the same storyline, but without the grainly graphics and bad lighting, it just doesn't cut it.
Take my advice, buy the original, NOT the remake. (...) ...

Excellent repeat viewing value. ... Read more
