Exactly what did they mean by "Best"?
Soupy Sales was one of the funniest guys on 60's TV, but you'd never know it from this short video. I loved his show as a kid. Maybe my memory overplays how good he was, but I still can't help feeling you give me a day with a few of his old tapes and I'll give you a better selection than this. Great show, poor clips.

Superbly Soupy!! Where's His movie!!!
This film is an excellent video of clips of Soupy Sales. Hopefully someday his hilarious,reknowned 1966 slapstick movie"Birds Do It"co-starring Tab Hunter and Arthur O'Connell will be released on vhs/dvd including the film trailer should be a smashing hit and a cult classic if it's released,so spread the word,it's been very,very long overdue!!The "Best of Soupy Sales" is a must see video that's Superbly Soupy"!!Video distributors both large and small including Rhino Video should aggressively inquire about releasing this overlooked gem of a movie!!

OK Murphy flick
In this Film, Ricky (Goldblum) is an executive who has two weeks to
build up profits for a home shopping network (run by Loggia). To help him
out, Loggia teams him up with Kate (Preston). That day, they have a flat
tire and literally run into "G" (Murphy) on the side of the road. Ricky takes
him home & they become friends.
Soon after, Ricky asks "G" if he'll be on his show since he thinks it
could help him. Kate thinks so as well. So, "G" is now a part of the
network. And what Ricky had hoped for, happens. "G" makes sales boom
by giving the callers wise advice and inspiration. He doesn't push them to
buy products, but tells them to be happy with what they have, and as a result,
they buy and buy and buy more.
This movie has all of the ingredients to be a big hit. Eddie Murphy
can't help but be hilarious, and with his shaved head, white robes, and
sincere holiness, he certainly beats John Travolta and Denzel Washington in
their recent "angel-like" roles. Jeff Goldblum is perfect in the role as the
cynical, materialistic media person who eventually understands the wisdom
imparted to him by "G".
However, who is this mysterious "G"? Is he God? Is he a Gandhi
type of person? This becomes a distracting, going nowhere, letdown. It's as
if the director gave up somewhere along the way.
The predictable romance between Goldblum and Preston is,
well....predictable.
I enjoyed this movie, but I don't think I would pay to see it a second
time. Therefore, I would grade this PG movie a charitable B- grade.

Take the journey...
I thought this was a very cute show. Eddie Murphy can play any part well. I think it is great to see him share his talents with a larger audience. He is still very charming and entertaining without the bad language and adult humor. Goldblum was good also as well as the rest of the cast. The movie starts out a bit awkward then takes right off. G (Eddie Murphy) is gifted with the ability to touch the hearts of others. He hypnotize's a man to help him overcome his fears, does magic tricks, and brings people closer together. The more you are around him the more his strange ways grow on you. It's not a long show and worth watching at least once. Go ahead ...take the journey.

Two hours of my life ... lost forever
I saw this movie at a free advance screening. Not walking out was one of the biggest regrets of my life. I look back on the two hours I spent in the theater that night as some kind of delirious and miserable fever dream. Anyone who likes this movie is either brain damaged, Ned Flanders, or a little bit of both.

1 star is too much
I made the assumption that Eddie Murphys films are bound to be funny and worth watching. This film proved me wrong.

The Prince Of Pies Rules!!Where's His Movie?!
This excellent A&E Biography shows how superbly Soupy Sales taught the World to laugh inspite of itself!Funnier than a barrel of Monkeys and able to throw Cream Pies with precision accuracy,Soupy sales knocked em' dead on early television back in the 1950's-60's with the baby boom generation childrens show that featured continuous slapstick jokes and gags with the type of hip humor that caught on with the adults also.You'll also see clips on Soupy Sale's hilarious 1966 Debut REKNOWNED Movie "BIRDS DO IT!"co-starring Tab Hunter and Arthur O'Connell for which many of his fans are still anxiously awaiting it's video/dvd release including the film trailer will hopefully happen someday and should be a smashing hit and a cult classic,so spread the word,it's been very,very long overdue!!Video distributors both large and small should aggressively inquire about releasing the overlooked gem of a movie!! ... Absolutely the Worst of the Soupy Sales Show!
The Best of the Soupy Sales Show and More Best of the Soupy Sales Show are much funnier than this one. Save your money.

Soupy is not all here.
Not enough of the old Soupy. I think most of his tapes were thrown away. One good skit with White fang and black tooth.

Some hilarious Soupy moments
If you grew up watching Soupy Sales on his various t.v. shows in the 50s, 60s and 70s you'll love some of the moments on this tape. If you have read his wonderful new biography Soupy Sez and want to learn more about him and his attitude-filled style of kids-show-but-not-only-for-kids comedy, you'll see some priceless moments and will be turned on.

But be warned: the BEST Soupy Sales video has yet to be compiled. Sales was sort of a kids' version of 50s t.v. star Ernie Kovaks, who later influenced the 1960s rapid-fire-gag show Laugh In. And it's not surprising that Laugh In also seemed very much influenced by Sales. Sales' never talked DOWN to kids but TO kids -- and to adults. Frank Sinatra and others were HUGE fans; Sinatra asked to appear on his show and get a pie in his face...and he DID.

Script? He had a basic guide. And he made it seem like it was all ad libs -- and all easy...which it wasn't. His show consisted of him often listening to radio news reports peppered with vaudeville-burlesque style jokes, his own outrageous puns, and "camp" hand puppet routines that were enjoyed by adults on another level. And LOTS of hilarious slapstick.

He'd answer the door and you'd only see the hands of a visitor -- and it usually ended with Sales getting a pie (shaving cream filled) in his face. Or you'd see him talking to his huge dogs White Fang and Black Tooth...and you'd only see his paws. If he told a joke while talking to them...a pie in his face.

This tape DOES have some priceless moments -- for die-hard Sales fans and students of comedy. The first is a black and white program from his ABC network series of the 1960s. Although some of this does NOT reflect Sales at his nutty best, there are some great moments of schtick...such as when he holds a glass of water and is asked the time (you guessed it). This is the slower of the two episodes.

The second program, from his syndicated 1970s show, is better. It shows a slightly older Sales but his humor hasn't changed one iota. And there is a CLASSIC slapstick bit that is EVERY BIT AS GOOD as ANYTHING the Three Stooges or Laurel and Hardy ever did...about a man (you only see the hands) at his door who wants him to test some products. This should be shown to any aspiring comedians (for the timing, Sales' reactions)..and it shows Sales at his zaniest best.

According to Sales' wonderful bio, tapes of most of his shows were destroyed. Perhaps some day someone will find enough of them to put out an authentic "BEST" of Soupy tape -- but for now if you get this tape and look for these priceless, timeless moments you'll get his humor, get some laughs -- and if you DON'T you deserve a pie in your face. ... A small measure of a great comedian.
Overall better than the first in the series, but falls far short of what I hoped to see. The video is in two sections. The first is from the old lunch series, and the second is from the evening series. The first is run of the mill. But hold on, the second is in color,with full editing. Although no where near his best, it will have to do. It is a shame his classic clips were not used. The younger people could have seen his great talent. ... Read more
