4-0 out of 5 stars Doctor Detroit
This is a very funny movie. Dan Ankroyd is Hilarious. I wish that they would bring it out on DVD. OLD SCHOOL comedy at its best.

2-0 out of 5 stars ACKROYD IS NO DOCTOR
Dan Ackroyd's first starring vehicle after the success of the original "Saturday Night Live" is a weak disjointed comedy wherein he plays a college professor who must pose as a mob boss. The scenes with a rival crime czar, a woman named 'Mom', are grotesque and funny but Ackroyd never fits comfortably in the role as he did in hundreds of SNL skits.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Doctor is Definately In!
"Doctor Detroit" is a comedy that will take many fans back to the glorious days of the early 1980's, when disco was in its' dying stages and comedy stars from television's "Saturday Night Live" were starting to branch off into film projects. Dan Aykroyd in his the best role of his life plays Cliff Skridlow, a nerdy college professor who has a chance encounter with a group of 'professional' ladies.

When Cliff meets a pimp (Howard Hessman) on the run from Chicago's most ruthless crime boss, Mom, he must find a way to fend for the ladies who fear for their lives. Their pimp has fled to Tahiti, and therefore Cliff the college professor becomes Dr. Detroit, pimp extradonaire.

In a series of meetings with Mom, Dr. Detroit becomes the most feared and legendary pimp throughout Chicago. However his professional life is falling apart as the college is in need of dire funds to continue operating. With the help of the girls and their assistant Diablo (T.K. Carter) Cliff balances his professional and social lives. But after being named "Player of the Year," Cliff must make an appearance at the annual "Players Ball" in order to receive this honor. The problem is that he has another engagement for the college on the same night and at the same hotel the ball is being held. With Mom and her goons lurking nearby, the Doctor/Cliff will make this a night you'll never forget.

Featuring a cast full of past and future stars, and a soul-filled soundtrack, 'Doctor Detroit' was a showcase for many talents. Three of the four women playing the 'girls' include a pre-"Nanny" Fran Drescher, Donna Dixon (she later married Dan Aykroyd), and Lynn Whitfield ("Eve's Bayou"). The film also includes a special appearance by soul legend James Brown as the main attraction at the Players Ball.

Full of funny scenes including Aykroyd impersonating a Southern lawyer and his battle with Mom at the junkyard, Doctor Detroit gave Dan Aykroyd a vehicle to extend his comedic skills to the fullest extent. The film's most classic scene is the excellently choreographed opening at the Players Ball where everyone is grooving to the rhythms of James Brown. Pimps, prostitutes, and crime lords all get involved in what has to be an ode to the blaxploitation films of the past.

If you are looking for a clever, funny, and hip film, your search has ended. "Doctor Detroit" still remains as one of the 1980's most memorable comedies.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent , must see
this is one of the best movies ever produced. Dan Akroyd is at his best and even funnier than in Blues Brothers. also has star appearance of James Brown. ... Read more

The son (Chris Makepeace) of a hotel manager (Martin Mull) finds himself the target of the school bully (Matt Dillon, in his breakthrough movie role). So he makes an offer to a school outcast--the biggest kid in class (Adam Baldwin), who reputedly has actually killed someone. He'll pay him to be his bodyguard against the bully. But the business arrangement turns into friendship, even as the smaller boy learns his new friend's secret shame. The first film by director-producer Tony Bill, this one comes down a little too heavily on the feel-good notes (and includes a gratingly precious appearance by Ruth Gordon in her lovable eccentric mode) but works because of strong performances by its young cast. --Marshall Fine ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific film
This is a terrific movie. The plot concerns a boy named Clifford (Chris Makepeace) who's new to a Chicago high school. He quickly becomes the target of Moody, the school bully (Matt Dillon). Rather than put up with Moody and his friends, Clifford gets Linderman (Adam Baldwin) to be his bodyguard. Everyone at the school is terrified of Linderman, but he and Clifford become close friends. There are also a few scenes with Martin Mull as Clifford's father, a hotel manager, and Ruth Gordon as his grandmother. It's a very sweet film with superb performances from all the actors. I would recommend it to just about anyone, although there is a little bit of swearing and some mild violence. Overall, though, it's a great film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cinema Masterpiece
Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, Citizen Kane, and othermasterpieces will NEVER come close to this 80's classic. Matt Dillionand Chris Makepeace are the Newman and Redford of the eighties. Never before have these two acted together. Why did we have to wait so long? The story is a typical classic of the bully next door picking on the little guy. Chris Makepiece (who also played an Oscar winning performance as Rudy in Meatballs) plays the ever so meekish wimp in the movie masterfully. His paleness, frailty, and may I say struggle with sexually identity, does nothing more than draw you closer to the character. Adam Baldwin (who also stared as that zaney Camp Director in Poison Ivy) does a brilliant job of protecting his friend against the testosterone filled, angry, come from a broken home family, bully (Matt Dillion). As you watch the friendship and tension grow from friendship to love, you are a dissapointed that Chris and Adam don't get together in the end. And let's not forget the veteran actress Ruth Gordon, (with such riviting supporting roles from Every Which Way but Loose and Bronco Billy) who does nothing but bring this film from the fire like a Phoenix. The story line: epic. The directing: tantillizing. The acting: Superbly done with just a dash of Jean La Pefome' Da Cu for added SPICE. (Forgive me but I do tend to get excited.) If you have a life savings that is just waiting to be invested on a return that will bring eternal fortune, please buy My Bodyguard for the friends and family. You will not be disappointed. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars "Peache?! I knew he was a fruit!"
For some reason, I always thought this movie took place in New York, but seeing it recently, and seeing the scene where the boys ride around Daley Plaza, I realized it takes place in Chicago. Pretty sad considering I grew up just north of Chicago and a few famous landmarks are visibly present within a number of scenes.

Anyway, Clifford Peache (Chris Makepeace) has a problem besides his really bad mushroomed shaped harido. Having just transferred from a private to public school, Clifford has run afoul of a gang of toughs, led by Moody (Matt Dillon) whose main source of income is extorting money from kids under the premise of protection from another kid, Ricky Linderman (Alec Baldwin). See, legend has it that Ricky, a boy larger than most, has done all kinds of things from killing a kid, raping a teacher, to shooting a cop. Moody and his gang claim to provide protection from Ricky, but, really, they are only providing protection against themselves, because not paying Moody would result in a beating from Moody or any of his cronies. Clifford angers Moody and his goons by refusing to pay, which results in all kinds of harassment.

Clifford, seeing that even the bullies are afraid of Ricky, approaches Ricky to try and make a deal to get him to be his bodyguard. Ricky agrees initially, but backs out as Clifford tries to learn more about Ricky, about his past and why he's so feared. I've noticed some reviewers have tried to infer some sort of burgeoning homoerotic relationship between these two characters, but I really didn't see it. It's sad that two male characters in a movie can't develop a close friendship without some people labeling it as something other than what it is...I actually found that notion a little offensive and silly as this is a charming little movie that portrays one boy, who shut nearly shut everything out after a tragic event opening up to a friend. In the end, the boys develop a friendship, but also get more in that Clifford learns how to stand up for himself and Ricky seems to come to terms with a past event that isolated him and made him feared throughout the school.

Look for appearances by Martin Mull, Ruth Gordon, Joan Cusack, John Houseman, George Wendt, Tim Kazurinsky, and Jennifer Beals. The movie is presented in full screen and wide screen formats, and looks really good. The audio is solid, but there are English subtitles if needed. One of the many things I appreciated about this movie was the use of real teenagers to portray teens on the screen. It really annoys me seeing some twenty something being passed off as a high school student as seems fairly common nowadays. Also, it seemed the entire movie was shot on location in Chicago, rather than on a soundstage, providing a bit of a gritty, realistic feel. This was a nice, subtle touch that served to make a great movie that much better. Overall, an excellent movie I would recommend to most anyone.

... When I saw the My Bodyguard DVD ...I thought what the hell. I got home and was genually moved by it, and could remember all of it. This simple story of teen friendship
without gun play, thumping soundtrack, or computer imagery.
The acting is good (great in the case of Matt Dillon), and yes there are some descrete hints that it may be more than friendship...

A pity that its a bare bones release,...

The story is basically about a boy named Clifford, who has just moved to a new school. Everything seems to be going well until he meets up with Moody and his gang, the school bullies. They arent just your typical gang of bullies the're a gang of extortionists, promising protection to those who pay them. When Clifford refuses, Moody gets angry and starts to bully Clifford. Then one day Clifford finds out about a boy his age named Ricky Linderman( about six feet three inches tall), who supposedly murdered his brother in cold blood. So naturally the entire school, including Moody and the gang fear him. One day Clifford offers to pay Ricky money to protect him from Moody, Ricky turns him down because he doesn't want to get involved. However this does not stop Clifford who proceeds to follow him home one day, the two form a close friendship and Ricky protects Clifford and the other kids from Moody and his extortion. And for awhile all seems to be going well until..... watch and see! ... Read more
