Like a soda pop left open all night, Bueller seems to have lost its effervescence over time. Sure, Matthew Broderick is still appealing as the perennial truant, Ferris, who fakes his parents out and takes one memorable day off from school. Jeffrey Jones is nasty and scheming as the principal who's out to catch him. Jennifer Grey is winning as Ferris's sister (who ends up making out in the police station with a prophetic vision of Charlie Sheen). But there's a definite sense that this film was of a particular time frame: the '80s. It's still fun, though. There's Ferris singing "Twist and Shout" during a Chicago parade, and a lovely sequence in the Art Institute. But don't get it and expect your kids to love it the way you did. Like it or not, it's yours alone. --Keith Simanton ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Twist and Shout
What would a typical day be if you always got away with everything? Check in on Ferris and you'll have some idea. John Hughes, master of 80s teens dramas like Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles created an eighties film icon when he brought this film to the screen. The film is filled with old fashioned film and theatrical techniques, that to the youth of the day, was interpreted as new and cutting edge... Ferris (Matthew Broderick in the role he was born to play) spends a lot of time talking directly to the audience as his character would be the only one in the film with the guts to let anyone else see... He is surrounded by his beautiful girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and browbeaten buddy, Cameron. Although Sloane's role is pretty thankless, Cameron is the most troublesome character; it is the film's weak link even with a sufficient performance by Alan Ruck. Cameron is at times the anti-Ferris, someone who lives in constant fear of his father and authority in general. Ferris is so popular that he gets two antagonists to his adventure, his sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey) and a school administrator played by the wonderful Jeffrey Jones. He is always willing to have every joke at his expense. One of the unwritten stars of this film is the beautiful city of Chicago, providing many of the great outdoor scenes. In fact, Ferris commands the attention of thousands of Chicago parade watchers and turns them to celebrate his whim to the strains of "DANKE SCHOEN" and TWIST AND SHOUT. This is one of the most rewarding, mindless scenes in recent history. The DVD nicely accentuates the English pop soundtrack and the video transfer is great. One drawback is one of the most boring audio commentaries in recent memory from the director John Hughes.

Be sure to stay through the closing credits... Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious!
In "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", Matthew Broderick plays Ferris Bueller, a high school teenager who enjoys slacking off and cutting school is his favorite hobby. One brilliant day in his hometown of Chicago, Ferris decides to cut school again (even though he has already missed school nine times), and tries to show his sick best friend, Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend, Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) how to have a good time and just how to be laid-back with life. Ferris can easily fool his parents (Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward) into believing that he is really sick so he can stay home from school. But when his sister, Jeanie Bueller (Jennifer Grey) and school dean, Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) find out that Ferris has cut school, they both try to make his life as miserable as possible in their own ways. And it's up to Ferris to enjoy his day off and get home before his parents come home from work.

The cast is brilliant...this is probably Matthew Brodderick's best role to-date. Director John Hughes did an amazing job, as usual. The script is well-written and extremely funny. "Ferris Bueller" is a classic high school film that everyone should own. However, the DVD lacks terribly; the only bonus feature is a commentary made by John Hughes. And the DVD is available in wide screen format.

I highly recommend "Ferris Beuller's Day Off".

Shaquille O'Neal plays a relatively recent DC Comics hero named Steel, an Army weapons engineer who dons a steel suit and does battle with various bad buys, including a weapons dealer (Judd Nelson) whose market is criminals. Sooner or later, somebody had to give Shaq the opportunity to finally prove he doesn't belong in movies, and this silly 1997 action movie--in which O'Neal could not possibly look more wooden--does the trick. --Tom Keogh ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Why Butcher Shaq?
Personally, I have no idea how Shaquille O' Neal would want to act in movies. He is not that good a voice actor at all, but he does great action stunts. I always liked Steel, even though I've hardly ever heard of him. At least the comics have an African-American character. Now, why would this movie be bad? The effects aren't THAT bad. It's not exactly predictable. And besides Shaq, everyone else acts well. It's a nice little plot, not too simple, keeping you confused at the beginning and making you feel good at the end. Of course, Annabeth Gish's character being able to walk again at the film's end is a bit much; if anything, they should have saved that for a sequel. Shaq has the size and the looks. His films are B material at best, but STEEL was obviously his best. KAZAAM, of course, was hilarious, but not as good as this. This movie was MEANT to be taken seriously, so don't expect too much. I mean, the romance in TITANIC, the 1998 romance/tradgedy, was awful. And on the back of the case, it said "Titanic has been hailed as the greatest motion picture of all time". That's bull. I mean, who wrote that, anyway? God, or something? At least STEEL doesn't brag like THAT. The movie is one of the best I've ever seen in action. They just should have found a tall black man who wasn't Shaq, and made the story longer, and this could've been a classic. Shaq, please don't star in any more movies. There's something just dumb about how you act. But you survived it. And if you can do that, I think the movie's viewers should be able to treat it with a little more respect. In other words, shame on all of you. At least Shaq TRIED.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a giant! It's a robot! No it's STEEL!
John Henry Irons is a man you don't want as an enemy, because for these simple facts He's like seven feet tall, Used to be in the army and is an army of one, and is the super hero STEEL. Here is another super hero movie with an "S" involved. STEEL has no super powers but what he dose have is a metal suit that protects him from harm and has a big giant jackhammer as his weapon! The movie starts off with a tank being blown up, death, drama, and new advanced weapons! That's only in the first minute! You have a whole movie after that and can watch thrill packed adventure, suspense, gangs, the bad part of town, and STEEL. The music is good too. Five bucks says all boy's 5-12 will like this film because I'm not a boy anymore and I liked it. Kid's it is a must see and parents it makes a good stalking stuffer, so enjoy!
-Other movies I recommend with this movie are Superman, and Supergirl.

2-0 out of 5 stars So bad, it's good...
I give this movie 2 stars simply because I feel a one star would be cruel. But take my word for it, this is not a good movie at all. Actually, it's so bad it's funny. The film stars Shaq. There are so many things wrong with that last sentence, mostly the part about Shaq being in a movie. Shaq is not a good actor. Heck, he isn't even decent. The movie's script doesn't help him much. He plays John Henry Irons, a retired soldier who learns of a madman's plot to sell high-powered weapons to other evil people. The madman is Judd Nelson. There are also so many things wrong with that sentence. Nelson is completely miscast here, and his performance is so weak, it wouldn't surprise me if the filmmakers tried to find someone who they knew would make Shaq look good. It doesn't matter. They both come out looking pretty ridiculous. The movie's only saving grace (except its unintentional humor) is Richard Roundtree. Roundtree steals the show and every scene he's in by just smiling and dealing with the fact that he's the only first-rate actor in a movie of second-rates. Sure, he's also unintentionally funny, but he's the only one in the cast who I think wanted to be. If you like cheesy movies with dumb plots and terrible acting, "Steel" is the place to go. Actually, I'd probably recommend it for that reason. But don't see it expecting a solid plot, good acting, cool action, or even witty one-liners. So see "Steel," just don't expect anything from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars And they said Batman and Robin was bad....
Which it is, but this movie seems somewhat worse. It really looks like it was made on a tight budget and rushed through production. No screenplay, heavy metal rap music score, hastly designed sets and wooden acting from all the performers. Another strikeout movie from the DC Universe and Time Warner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst movie ever made.
Steel was a bad movie with bad action. The script was bad,and the
music was just terrible.I rented this movie back In 1998,and I
sat down with my Pizza, and I watched it on a sunny Friday afternoon, and it was a waste of money.Shaq can't act,or do stunts. The costumes were bad,and the plot was weak.I think Shaq

The eternally scantily clad Alyssa Milano (Body Count executive producer as well as star) gives a solid performance as the newest member of a wealthy clan whose constant in-fighting is terminally interrupted by a deadly pack of art thieves determined to add a few more skeletons to the already overstuffed family closet. This well-constructed, dark-edged melding of Die Hard and Peyton Place mostly runs like a dream, despite a few off-putting flashes of lame humor (courtesy of swaggering head killer Ice-T), and a Usual Suspects-inspired ending that, while certainly surprising, doesn't really seem to fit the material. All in all, this is a well-acted, surprisingly artful slice of pulp containing a welcome vein of genuine dread. --Andrew Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a grate action film
This movie was so good. I say this is a must see movie for evreyone especially Millano fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars SEXY THRILLER WITH A KIND OF HEARTFELT VIOLENCE
This movie starts out as a young couple driving to the husband's family's house. When they get there, [Alyssa Milano] immediately finds out that the husband (i forgot his name) is not well appreciated. So they go deep into the basement to talk, and end up making love. While they are having sex, they hear commotion upstairs. They find that everyone upstairs has been killed. Then [Alyssa] soon finds out that....well I can't spoil the movie but it's great despite Alyssa's seemingly massive rash of low-budget movies. (I like her in Charmed on the WB)

2-0 out of 5 stars Excitement? Thrills? Look elsewhere!!
The only thing that saves this movie from putting you to sleep are the 2 main stars, Alyssa Milano & Ice-T. There isn't any storyline that hasn't been done before & as for twists, the only twists in this movie will be your stomach churning from feeling like you've seen this before. ... Read more
