4-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Better Sequels
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 picks up where Part 3 ended. The remaining dream warriors are knocked off one by one as Freddy is ressurected. The powers of Kristen go into Alice, played exceptionally well by Lisa Wilcox. Alice becomes the hero as she must battle Freddy. I love this movie. It's definitley better than Parts 2, 5, and Freddy's Dead. The movie is more colorful, splashy, and fun than others. The effects were outstanding and Robert Englund was electrifying. The movie was definitley going for fantasy/horror/comedy this time around, but that's okay. It still makes for an entertaining movie. This movie is special to me because it was the first Freddy movie I saw in theaters. I was instantly hooked. The movie is a great carnival ride filled with stylish direction by Renny Harlin. Many fans dismiss this movie because of it's splashiness, but that's what makes this movie good and stand out among the others. Nightmare 5 ventured away a bit and got a little darker, almost a little too dark, and that's great. But this one is still better. It's a definite must for any fan of this type of movie. It was my favorite sequel until Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Made, Well Conceived, Sequal.
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 The Dream Master is a very, very good entry in this awesome horror series.

The film picks up a few years after Dream Warriors. Kincaid (Ken Sagoes), Joey (Rodney Eastman), and Kristen (no longer Patricia Arquette, but Tuesday Knight) are living in their own homes now, no longer the mental hospital. They're pretty happy until Kristen has a nightmare and pulls Joey and Kincaid into it. They just get mad because Freddy Kreuger's nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, Alice (Lisa Wilcox), Kristen's good freind, has a lot to worry about at home. Her father's an alcoholic and takes his anger out on her and her brother, Rick.

Soon, Freddy is revived (in a very interesting way, I might add) and kills both Joey and Kincaid. When Kristen finds out about this, she tries hard to stay awake, but when her mother sneaks sleeping pills into her drink, she eventually fails. Freddy forces her to pull Alice into her dream, and Alice witnesses her getting burned up. However, Kristen transports her powers into Alice, and, as Freddy kills off all of her freinds one by one, Alice gains the strenths.

Nightmare On Elm Street 4 is a very good, well crafted, well written and directed, thriller that never lets up on its excitement or its fun. Directed quite well by Renny Harlin (The Foot Shooting Party, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2), who brings to the film a classy look, with some brilliant camera movements, and some cool death sequences. Most of the actors in this film do quite good, most noticably Lisa Wilcox as Alice. Of course, Robert Englund's terrific as the one, the only, Freddy! This is the point where he gets funny instead of scary, as he's cracking off one-liners nearly every second. He's still not quite as goofy or cartoony as he'll become in Freddy's Dead. But I don't mind either Freddy. The scary Freddy's cool, and the funny one's cool, too. Also, look for Robert Shaye (the films producer) in one scene as a teacher lecturing on dreams.

The DVD is pretty good (I own the box set). There's good picture quality to take your breath away. You've just gotta get down on your hands and knees and thank the good lord that these movie's aren't owned by Paramount. Because, they would never go out in a box set. They'd never have any special features, and the picture and sound would be horrible. Thank God that Paramount rejected these movies. Anyway, you also get two audio options, original mono, and 5.1 surround (YES!!!). Extra features incclude a "Jump To A Nightmare" scene navigation, cast and crew biographies as well as the standard scene selection and english subtitles. For DVD-Rom you can read the script while watching the movie, and also play the dream warriors trivia game. If you're playing this trivia game to unlock the eigth disk in the box set, don't get excited. The codes don't work when you type them in on that disk. Anyway, the only difference here from the box set is that you get BOTH a 1:85:1 widescreen anamorphic format and a 1:66:1 standard version. I still have trouble seeing why people would even want to watch a movie in standard, you can't see anything! Also is a cool trailer.

Well, all in all, this is a great movie, on a good DVD. I'd say you should buy this, but really, just get the box set. You'll be happy you did! [...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Belongs on the comedy shelf
This was the first of the horrible NOES sequels. First of all, Patricia Arquette did not return to reprise her role as Kristin. Second, Freddy was supposed to be scary?? With all his wisecracking and stupid humor, he seemed like a washed up has been comedian. Trust me on this one, any ANOES's after part 3 is a waste of money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Four down; three to go
Sigh... like the first three 'Nightmare' flicks, the fourth one doesn't strike me as bein' all that scary. Sure there's the usual gruesome imagery that made me go "ugh"-- the whole roach-motel dealie bein' one of these "ugh" moments-- but otherwise I didn't exactly jump outta my skin or have any sudden arrhythmia attacks while watchin' this. The only real gross-out part for me was near the end, where all the souls of the kids Freddy took out try to bust out of him. I also wasn't too big on the somewhat silly manner in which Freddy gets 'killed' here; I mean, really-- a look at his own reflection in a cracked mirror is what does him in? How underwhelming...

But in spite of my less-than-rave-review of this flick, I did enjoy the silliness of its courageous yet hokey and predictable attempts at givin' me a fright. Helping things out was the usual array of inventive Freddy kills & gags to keep things fresh (heh) including the aforementioned roach motel dealie, a waterbed drowning, a deflation and a frighteningly-fun shot at 'Jaws'.I also liked our fave undead madman's turn into a more comedic figure while still maintaining that menacing edge. And they even managed to improve the look of Freddy's 'burn' makeup/appliance job, which looks almost realistic in this go-'round. I guess New Line finally decided to pump some real money into the franchise, hmmm? Heh...

4-0 out of 5 stars Denzel Strikes Again!
I seriously doubt Mr. Denzel Washington is able to give anything less than a performance of total conviction, as he proves once again to me here in one of his earliest leading roles. In a true-life portrayal of George McKenna, new principal to the trouble-torn George Washington Memorial High School, he is wholly convincing. The problems he encounters are not solely those caused by the students, but also the parents and indeed some of the teachers. His determination to turn things round stems from his passion that his pupils WILL graduate to college if they want to, and that this will never happen if they don't feel anyone cares about them. Despite resistance from some pupils and teachers,(not to mention ongoing gang warfare within the grounds), others rise to the occasion, both for themselves and for McKenna himself, such is the respect he gains. In the process of such diligence his once supportive girlfriend leaves him under the pressure of his split commitments, but as for the School, he succeeds. Seeing the graduating students really is a heartwarming moment! Having previously seen "187", it does make the violent scenes and troublesome pupils here look bland by comparison, but its hard to tell if this film was sanitised or "187" sensationalised. Regardless, its still well worth the watch, especially if you respect Denzel's work in later movies already. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better installments of the series
After the waste that was Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, Wes Craven returned to co-write this third installment (which thankfully ignores anything that happened in Part 2) with director Chuck Russell (The Scorpion King) at the helm. Here we are introduced to Kristen (Patricia Arquette) who is admitted in a mental institution with other teens who all share the same dreams of being stalked by a familiar razor clawed killer. An older Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp returning in her role from the original film) is now a dream specialist and she tries to help the kids, and the final solution is to enter the dream world and do something no one else has dared do: beat Freddy at his own game. Dream Warriors is one of the better installments of the series, and the return of Langenkamp and Craven as a co-writer are reasons why enough, but Russell's great direction helps elevate Dream Warriors above many of the other films in the series. My only problems are this is where Freddy began to pop out one liners and be funny, and while that is amusing itself for a while, it does get boring and Freddy just doesn't seem as scary after a while. Also, the film can be a bit cheesy at times, and don't even get me started on the theme song done by Dokken. Laurence Fishburne has a small role, and John Saxon has a brief returning role as Nancy's father. All in all, next to the original film and New Nightmare, Dream Warriors is the best in the series, but sadly most of the remaining films in the series would continue a downward trend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elm Street 3 delivers well designed sequel by series creator
After a lackluster 1st sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, attempts to take the series back to its roots. It has been an unmarked amount of time since part 2 and Freddy has returned since then to slaughter the children of the parents who murdered him. Our prime location changes, for the first time, from Nancy Thompson's house to an asylum full of kids who are scared to sleep. A new patient, Kristin Parker (played by Patricia Arquette) arrives and also dreams of a red and green sweatered man with knives for fingers. The doctors decide that all these kids need is a good night's rest and usually sedate them. Sadly, this leads to the children being unable to awaken fro their Freddy nightmares.

A suprise entrance by Nancy Thompson (played by Heather Langenkamp), who has not been seen since Elm Street 1, is a welcomed addition to this movie. Her past with Freddy adds immediate extra excitment to the film when the killer lays eyes on her and whispers only "... you..."

The film shows off group unity against Freddy instead of the usual kill-off-one-by-one formula. Another first for the series is the deaths become much more spectacular. And Freddy's darkness begins to fade in favor of quip one-liners.

Overall, I do not know exactly what Wes Craven's role in this movie was, but this sequel remains hailed as the best sequel in the series. A huge step up from part 2 indeed.

3-0 out of 5 stars psycho therapy
a burnt up freak is nasty to look at and child murder is disgusting in the very least.at least theyre teens so its not quite as bad.the teens are in a asylum in this one and freddy comes to thier dreams to hack them up again.they explore dream powers and use them to ward off his attacks.if you let your kids under 12 at minimum watch this, someone should lock you up.even at 12,this is an abselute minimum.16 is far better.wes craven dreamt this one up.his movies-with the freddy exceptions-all suck!#3 is the best of them all!scary?not really.intense?you bet!a nurse chick takes off her top just before trying to kill one of the patients.she was really freddy who used the dudes wet nurse dream to lure him into a deadly trap.as with all the freddy flicks, all the male stars are losers and the chicks arefly by night hussies.the special effects rock in this one.there are 8 parts to this series now,the last one where freddy and jason went at it.who knows whats next.i thought up freddy vs jason in the mid 80s.hollywood is just so slow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Three down... four to go
Sigh... it seems the further I delve into the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' movie series, the more underwhelmed by the 'scariness' of it all. Was this stuff really considered horrific when it first came out? Personally, I think it's more of an unintentional comedy, 'cuz I laugh most at the nightmare/death scenes, rather than get all shocked an grossed out by them.

On the upside, I found quite a few of the various deaths and gags shown here rather creative, if not particularly chilling. The blood-vessel-stringed marionette sleepwalk, the giant Freddy-worm tryin' to chow down on a potential victim, one little lady's "big break in TV", Freddy's syringe-finger attack, and the wheelchair-from-hell were some of the more entertaining pieces in this flick. I also kinda liked the return of a couple characters from the first 'Nightmare' to help out our little wacko-ward-imprisoned dream warriors. Might as well try to get the fans of the original flick to come on down to the 'Plex after the downright silliness of Part 2, heh. Speakin' of the dream warriors: another cool angle they threw in here was that of the heroine leading a group of teenagers against the main man to try & take him out once and for all-- which, judging from the subsequent sequels, was ultimately unsuccessful. Which reminds me of what that kid in 'Last Action Hero' said: "Ya can't die 'til the grosses go down!" And yes, I DO like 'Last Action Hero', thank you very much! And yes, I AM ashamed of this fact...

Also included-- with the help of a mysterious nun-- are a couple more revelations regarding the origin and back-story of everybody's fave undead Christmas-sweatered dreamland slasher, which judging from the films I've seen seems to be a standard gimmick they throw into each 'Nightmare' flick. Eh, I guess slow, incremental character development is better than no development at all, hmm? And I'm glad to see they improved Freddy's 'burn' makeup job, which looks a little bit better than the one in the first flick, and a LOT better than what I saw in part 2!

Following the closing credits featuring a little tune by 80s hair-metal group Dokken (remember that whole MTv "Rockin' with Dokken" dealy goin' on at the time this came out? No? Me neither), the VHS edition of this film includes a teaser trailer, and interview sessions with the various creative folks involved in the project. Ya know, the director, producer, writers, and such. I tried to watch this particular segment all the way through, but after five minutes of watching & listening to these guys prattling on about 'taking Freddy back to his roots' and other such pretentious pap, I rewound the tape and returned it immediately to the place I rented it from. Sheesh, and I thought those endless effects-laden 'traveling inside of V'Ger' scenes from 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' were tedious to sit through!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Horror/Comedy that actually works!
In spite of its generic title, "The Backlot Murders" turns out to be a pleasant surprise. It's an often hilarious film that pokes fun at traditional slasher films while serving up some chills on its own.
Through some fortunate circumstances a down on its luck rock band(featuring former teen heartthrob Corey Haim as the guitarist) gets to film its first video on the Universal Studios back lot. The video's director is played by the scene stealing Charles Fleischer, who is so hilarious in this role it's a wonder he doesn't get more work. Some of his lines(particularly in his scenes with Priscilla Barnes, as the band's manager) had me laughing out loud.
Soon, the band and the video crew start getting bumped off by a masked killer. Is it the band's former bass player, who was unceremoniously dumped shortly before they landed their big break? Maybe... I'm not telling.
"The Backlot Murders" is a welcome change of pace over other slasher films with a similar premise that take themselves too seriously. If you're looking for a slice 'n dice bloodbath, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an entertaining horror/comedy, then look no further. "The Backlot Murders" delivers.

1-0 out of 5 stars BARNES IS NOBLE
Okay, this movie is really, really bad....most of the acting is unbelievably horrid; the script is derivative and ludicrous (they even steal a murder right out of the original Friday the 13th), and the writer obviously thinks the F word needs to be in every other sentence; the girls are breasty to say the least, but bimbos one and all.

Heh...

Even Corey Haim, virtually unrecognizable, is wasted. In spite of some pretty funny references to slasher movies and such, this movie is far down on the horror food chain. Except for..and here's what's funny...Priscilla Barnes as the bitchy band manager (looking nothing like the model she once was) is outstandingly hammy and cool; she obviously was having a good time.
