Unlike the first movie (Demon Knight) this movie did not start out with the television show's opening. It opened more like a movie than an extra long episode. Bordello of Blood is the story of a down-on-his-luck private investigator (Dennis Miller) looking for a missing teenager. The search leads him to a funeral home that is a front for a bordello run by vampires. Miller's client tells him to drop the case but he really needs the case to succeed if he is going to get his license back. Miller investigates and plays a very savvy investigator who doesn't fall for anyone's lines and is not surprised by what he finds. Added to this is television evangelism, the lore of vampires and their origin, and the key from the first movie. The action is similar to the series with the same tongue-in-cheek humor (possibly even more so). I particularly liked the investigator's resourcefulness in eliminating the vampires (a long-range, large-capacity squirt gun filled with holy water) and the vampire applying the SPF100 sun block. If you like Tales From the Crypt, there is no reason you will not like this one.
Dennis Miller does his best with the weak material and ad-libs a lot of humor. A little too much, taking the film even further from it's already vague ambitions. But worry not, his humor is still free and easy, unlike his cryptic (no pun intended) football commentaries. Erika Eleniak is marginally engaging and Corey Feldman is well underused. The weakest performances come from Angie Everhart as the ancient vampire Lillith and Chris Sarandon as the outrageously stereotyped southern TV evangelist. It's these performances that keep the film eternally low brow. It's sad that Tales from the Crypt totally died after this movie but the powers behind it went on to found the Dark Castle production company (check out those movies they're actually quite scary and effective). This new version of Bordello of Blood is by Universal and is presented in it's proper aspect ratio of 1.85:1 anamorphic and is in Dolby 5.1. The cheapo snapper case has been replaced by a sturdy keepcase and a new cover art. The only new extra is a trailer.

This year's installment of "Project Greenlight" was really amusing. I liked all three of the winners - Kyle, Efram and Erica - and the movie seemed like it had potential to be a great one. But K & E, who seemed to get unfairly villified as arrogant control freaks, were unprepared to get slammed against the Mirimax machine. They made mistakes. They weren't team players. But they have talent and an honest vision, and their movie really could have been great. Instead, we have this, a 75-minute lightweight job that touches on many subjects and characters, only to "resolve" them with two-sentence exchanges. Think of all the missed opportunities here. The parents. The fiance. The bully, who is fascinatingly literate and short of stature. Bart's parents. And, most importantly, Kelly himself. Shia's performance is deeply perceptive and natural, but this cut of the movie refuses to let us see the source of Kelly's anger and intelligence. All we get is an awkward "One day I got angry" speech. There's a heart in "The Battle of Shaker Heights," and there's genuine talent on the screen and behind the cameras. Unfortunately, the Chris Moore's and Harvey Weinstein's of the world have molded that heart and talent into a shapeless piece of throwaway Mirimax entertainment.
Sadly, the movie was only released in a limited number of cities and theaters, and probably wasn't the blockbuster hit originally hoped for. I believe the movie was a huge success in a couple of ways: great writing and super acting by Shia LeBeouf. Witty subtleties in the dialogue can be attributed to brilliant writing. I hope Erica, the writer (also listed in the credits as a bridesmaid), didn't have to compromise as much as it seems she did during the course of Project Greenlight. I think this was a breakthrough performance for Shia. He artfully and comically captured Kelly's (his character) intriguing mix of angst, passion, self-deprecating humor, knowledge and intellect. I was captivated by his passion, pitied him for being a bully target, and was mad at him for his resentment aimed at his freshly sober dad. The movie was lacking in plot and character development, especially the relationship between Kelly and his father. This, I believe, was due in great part to editing, and not the original story. Another area I felt the movie lacked was the crush Kelly had on his best friend's sister. It didn't seem particularly believable and more awkward than anything. Hooray that in the end Kelly chose his friend-coworker. That was a much more believable and endearing match. Though I wouldn't categorize the movie as Oscar-worthy, all in all, it was very sweet and cleanly pulled together. It held my attention and left me loving and empathizing with Kelly. ... Swear to god, you've got to watch K-9, because it is the best movie that ever made with a dog as a main charactor. IT IS A CRIME NOT TO WATCH IT!...

'Disturbing Behavior' is more original than 'The Skulls', on the level of 'The Faculty', but contains, what, one scary scene. 'Scary' is maybe too strong a word. But go ahead, rent it on a lazy afternoon, and enjoy Katie Holmes' gorgeousness. But do not expect much more from the film.

The storyline shows the young idealistic cop being slowly convinced by her partner, Jason Patric, that they would have to do drugs in order to make drug dealers trust them. Eventually, she and Patric not only become seriously addicted, they also get involved in a romance. The viewer knows that no good will come of this. The viewer is right.
The roles are difficult but the actors did their jobs well. I really believed they were addicted and felt sorry for their predicament. Their commanding officer, Sam Elliott, knew what was going on but looked the other way because they kept making arrests. And their world was so infested with drugs that it became impossible to resist.
Because I had read the book, I knew how the story would turn out and this made the film seem a little slow. It could have been edited better. But generally, I enjoyed the film, felt totally turned off by the world it depicted, and feel that justice was done. I just wish it packed a bigger punch.
