David Rasche and Richard Young do a fine job as the crooked detectives that frame him. I have recommended this to many people since many Selleck fans are not even aware of it. Whether you like Selleck or not you will enjoy this film if you like movies like "The Fugitive","US Marshals", and "Shawshank Redemption". It is being released on DVD soon and you can bet I pre-ordered a copy. ... Read more

Diane Keaton, Michael Murphy, Meryl Streep, Wally Shawn, and (especially) Mariel Hemmingway seemlessly float around Allen's chatracter flawlessly, as the film surges towards a realistic but sad end as Allen and 17 year old Hemmingway part. Funny how life imitates art (as Woody is now married literally to Rosemary's Baby). Despite my hostility (as Allen would say), don't miss this film. It's everything that Manhattan is, and more. PS - if you ever have a chance to see it on a big screen, do so...!

In order to bring the two back together, the Ya-Yas (as they call themselves) go to New York, kidnap Sidda, and bring her back to Louisiana. They then keep her quasi locked up while she is forced to experience the history of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood through their record book. Along with the pictures in the book, the Ya-Yas tell her stories, leading up to the climactic story of when Vivi had a nervous breakdown, nearly killed her kids, including Sidda and her siblings, and ultimately ended up in a mental hospital. Apparently Siddha was unaware of a lot of what was going on and, as a result, has held deep seated resentments toward her mother for a long time. Eventually Siddha and Vivi are able to come to grips with what has happened. Siddha realizes that her mother wasn't perfect and Vivi admits to not being perfect. Having found some resolution to the emotional turmoil that has upset them for so long they are finally able to let the past go and love each other once again. My Comments: The story itself is really pretty simple. The hardest part, perhaps, is just making sure that all of the flashbacks fit into the present. There are a few places where things don't make a lot of sense and some additional information would have been useful, like, for instance, more information on Vivi's family - Why her mother hated her and why her father loved her so much? It also would have been nice to have more information on why Vivi ended up marrying Shepherd 'Shep' Walker (James Garner - older; David Lee Smith - younger). Without really understanding the backstory to Vivi it is a bit hard to understand why she had the nervous breakdown, but I don't know that you can ever fully explain why someone had one - you can just start to come to grips with the fact that it happened and the ramifications of it. So, despite not having all of the information I would have liked to Vivi's backstory, the story was pretty good. The only other thing I think I should mention is that it would also have been nice to see how this blow-up between Siddha and Vivi affected Siddha's siblings. Even though she was the oldest, they were all probably old enough to remember at least some of the things that happened (this may be addressed in the book). As for the acting, I was very impressed. I've never really thought Sandra Bullock was a great actress. So, when I saw that she was the main character in this film, or at least, was supposed to be, I was a bit worried. Well, she was okay, but she really isn't the actress to watch. Ashley Judd is the one who really has to push the limits of her acting ability and she does a great job. I think Ashley Judd has a lot of talent and was a very convincing younger Vivi, including the time during the emotional breakdown. The older Ya-Yas were also very good. Whenever they were on screen they pretty much stole the show from everyone else which, again, I can't say I minded because I'm not a huge fan of Sandra Bullock. The one person who I wish would have had more screen time but did great with what he had was James Garner, who truly did a great job of playing the role of a saintly husband who put up with a lot. Overall, I surprised myself by finding ways to relate with this film. I would suspect that pretty much every child holds some resentments towards their parents. I know this is a bit Freudian, but those feelings can later emerge as relevant to people's attitudes towards their parents and life in general. I think this movie (which is based on a book) does a great job of dealing with those issues and illustrating how devastating they really can be. I highly doubt that any parent can prevent their kids from having issues with them, but this does give a good example of how those issues can be addressed at a later point, when both are adults and able to better understand how one's actions affected the other. Maybe I'm reading too much into the movie and all of this psycho-babble Freudian analysis isn't really there, but I think it is. Anyway, it is a movie that tugs on the heart strings, but I think most people can relate to the reasons why. Because of that I would recommend this movie for pretty much anyone that has a mother, which means everyone (whether you know who she is/was or not).
'The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood', the movie, shares all of these traits with its best-selling inspiration. It too is warm, touching, funny, and involving, but, like the book, has more than its fair share of incongrous emotions and oftentimes silly plot twists that prevent it from being a True Classic. Starring Sandra Bullock and Ellen Burstyn (in a wonderful return-to-form, one of the best things in this picture) as Siddalee and Vivianne Walker, 'The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood' tells the story of how the Ya-Yas, Vivi's lifelong friends, heal rifts between mother and daughter, daughter and fiancee, and in doing so, lead to a greater, deeper level of understanding between all parties involved. The movie has many, many good points. The contrast between Sidda's hectic, neurotic city-girl chic and the Ya-Ya's slower-paced, yet nonetheless as complex, lifestyles, is nicely executed, and Bullock once again proves herself to be a decent actress who, while she may not yet have found her niche, is well on her way to becoming a true talent. Burstyn is glorious as the mentally challenging Vivi, and her pals, Ya-Ya'd to near-perfection by Fionnula Flanagan, Shirley Knight and Maggie Smith, all gel well as an ensemble, even if their individual performances lack the individualism of the novel's counterparts. The surprise of the picture is Ashley Judd as the young Vivi, she displays here an excellent understanding of the character and her portrayal of manic depression and alcoholism is as real as it is affecting. Sadly, the bad points of the movie come in the shape of some VERY unnessecary plot-tinkering (lovers of the book will know what I mean!) and the Oirish Occent so reprehensibly attempted by the mundane Angus McFayden as Conor McGill - I'm talking ear-bleedingly bad. Are there no Irish actors in Hollywood? Would it have been so terrible, in the wake of all the other movie changes, to make the character of Conor American? Grrr. Similarly out-of-place is the portrayal of Buggy Walker, Vivi's mother, a religious nut who doesn't come across as zealous at all, thereby robbing Vivi of much of her raison d'etre. This is a chick-flick, undemanding and sweet, and in places, excellent, but it's a shame that it could have been so much more, and is not. Recommended for rental.

The film chronicles the "nuclear" relationship between actress Lily (Bette Midler) and author Dan (Dennis Farina), who have been divorced and re-married for 14 years and still argue over whose fault it was that ended their marriage. In a particularly hilarious "civil conversation" at their daughter Molly's (Paula Marshall) wedding, the old feeling is suddenly re-ignited and they embark on a comedic affair with Molly and her new husband Keith hot on their trail. Along the way comes Joey (Danny Nucci), a sleazy photographer who likes to capture particularly bad impromptu photos of Lily to sell in the latest tabloid magazines. Admist the absolute mess and chaos, Joey is hired by a desparate Molly to find her parents in her efforts to try and reunite them with their respective spouses. Though Lily and Dan are the main item in the film's romantic aspect, the relationship that develops between Molly and Joey is equally charming. Though this film has its flaws, the charming and romantic parallel portraits that it paints are so likeable that the flaws are easily forgiveable. It reminds all of us that old feeling that we have inside of us through the hilarious and comedic affair between Lily and Dan, but at the same time, asks us what it is we're really looking for in Molly and Joey's story. Overall, this is a highly recommended flick that is fresh each and every time.
Who knew that 14 years after Lilly and Dan (Bette Midler and Dennis Farina) divorced and remarried that one very public argument would activate That Old Feeling? The "nuclear" relationship was rekindled at their daughter's wedding, and the on-screen chemistry between them is sizzling. Their daughter Molly (Paula Marshall) is the "adult" of the trio. Her poignant comment, "Do you realize how lucky I am that someone normal wanted to marry me?" foreshadows her decision to not settle. The acting is excellent, and I am sure the cast had a lot of fun making this movie. In one scene, Molly is fixing Joey's (Danny Nucci) hair; her eyes shift quickly as she figures out what will work to tame his wild locks. It is a simple scene, but it shows what good acting is about -- making it believable. Bohemians and politicians in a showy wedding where Molly's grandmother is tap dancing beg for comments. The political jibes about liberals and Republicans fit the scene and add to the farce. There are no "F" words; in fact, no swearing at all. Also, there are no sweaty bedroom scenes. The "action" is shown through innuendoes that stimulate imagination. In my opinion, this is much better than bearing it all. The fights and conversations between Lilly and Dan are stunning. Throughout the movie, great dialogue is snappy and fresh. In the end, Molly and Joey are accused of being just like her parents ... "No, but we soon will be..." The music score is superb. I own the music CD too. Five stars for one of my favorite movies. Victoria Tarrani
Not a very complex comedy but it doesn't need to be: Molly (Paula Marshall) is getting married to an up-tight blue-blood and is worried that her parents (Midler and Farina) who have been divorced for many years and still hate each other "with a nuclear capability" will ruin her wedding. Despite her reservations she invites them both and it almost comes to a slugfest in the middle of the reception. Yet immediately afterwards the romance, mysteriously, rekindles and the reunited parents of the bride ditch their new spouses (a gold-digger step mother and an overly sensitive therapist stepfather who is a little too attached to his dogs) to head off for a wild weekend, leaving Molly to find them and split them apart. For help finding her actress mother Molly gets the help of an overzealous paporazzi (played by Danny Nucci) to find them (of course the romance between the two youngsters can't be contained either). What is the true gem of this movie is the way Midler and Farina play off each other; here is a middle aged couple acting (and even dressing) middle aged but show that no matter how old you are you still have "that old feeling". The argument scenes between them are hysterical and quick-witted (a staple of any Midler performance; aside from Bette Davis-- Midler's namesake-- no one can deliver an insult better than Bette Midler with humor and wrath). This is a great movie for a Saturday afternoon and I would highly recommend this to anyone! ... Read more

But this movie is under 2 hours and managed to take a very complicated topic in Leveraged Buy-Outs (LBO's) in one of the biggest LBO's of our time in RJR-Nabisco and manages to make the story very entertaining. It flows quickly and I had no trouble following what's going on. The acting is superb; Jonathan Pryce played Henry Kravis as a cold, calculated and ruthless corporate raider (whether Kravis is like that in real life I don't know) and James Garner did a nice job as F. Ross Johnson. Overall, if you like wall street type movies like Wall Street with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen, I would highly recommend this movie. In fact, I like this better than Wall Street.
An all-out power war ensues, with Johnson working with Shearson Lehman Brothers pitted against Kravis and the powerhouse Drexel Burnham Lambert (mysteriously downplayed). The performances are great and the storyline moves fast and holds your interest. Not to be missed if the dynamic world of finance is your thing. A very different movie than Wall Street both cinematically and contextually. Stars James Garner, Jonathan Pryce (really, really good), and Peter Riegert.
Due to a high volume of profanity, this movie is not appropriate for young children.
It is bitingly funny and like all satire that truly bites, it is funny because it is based on truth. This movie condenses the RJR - KKR competition into something like a farce (as it seemed in the papers at the time). Some may object to making such a huge deal into something of a joke, but c'mon, this whole deal had a large dose of the absurd about it. How else could they have played this story in two hours? And it is has the additional benefit of being educational for business students. You will see how managers misuse shareholder money by treating it as if it were their own (agency costs). You will see planeloads of money poured into bad projects (NPV). You will see naked greed, inept investment advice, and broken trust (corporate ethics). You know, late 20th century American business! It is funny, dramatic, and a bit touching, for example, as they fly the sick pooch home on his own private corporate jet. (Which some deny every happening, but it has entered the realm of legend - so whether it happened or not it has become something like a kind of truth.) James Garner is terrific (he almost always is) as is the whole cast. It really is a delightful movie and that is almost miraculous given how deadly boring this topic could have become. But don't forget to read the book!

The terrible thing about this movie was how unbelievable everything was. Every character was able to pull a beautiful and heartwarming monologue out of thin air. Most of the speeches didn't even fit the character's personality, for instance, Kutcher's character gave at least two of these monologues, and each one was one of the best parts of the film's script. Too bad they came out sounding forced and awkward, since the character isn't supposed to be the brightest bulb in the box. Finally, the characters were painfully underdeveloped. We don't know whether or not Murphy's character likes being rich, nor can we ever really discern whether she's a rich-girl ditz or an art-loving intellectual. We never find out what Murphy's father does, and although a good, strong father-son relationship is hinted at between Kutcher's character and his father, we never know for sure. Finally, an attractive blonde was constantly around Murphy's character...was she a sister? friend? cousin? It nagged me through the whole movie. So, why not 1 star instead of 2? Well, Murphy and Kutcher proved to be excellent actors with amazing chemistry together. Murphy especially lit up the screen with her dazzling personality and cute, scratchy voice. Kutcher will be forever typecast as the dumb guy, but its a character that suits him well. I found them to be the only highlights of the movie. Bottom line: This movie kept me awake. It was fast paced and mildly enjoyable, but lacked anything fresh or different. See it if you like teen chick fliks, not if your idea of a movie is one that will keep you thinking.
My three part list for the rest of the movie: 1. It is badly cast THE STORY: Dumb, clumsy guy meets rich girl, they fall inexplicably in lust, they get hitched, they have a lousy honeymoon (due to their own stupidity), they quarrel, they break up, they make up (repeat last three items several times) The movie consists in its entirety of every bad, hackneyed gag best left on the cutting room floor. There is no on-screen chemistry between Kutcher and Murphy, and the torturous story limps along slowly and painfully to an unbelievable ending. The old lady in the car speaks for all of us - this wreck of a movie should be put out of its misery.

This was certainly an interesting movie. Maybe I was distracted or tired when I saw it, but I honestly had trouble following (or concentrating) on the film--the action, as well as the plot, was awfully scattered and jumpy. Craig Ferguson is one of my favorite actors, though, and he portrays the extremely bizarre (but innocent) Crawford very well. With the specific nature of the movie's subject and the unusual editing, this is clearly an independent movie along the lines of "Happy, Texas." However, it also has some very silly moments, as in when Crawford dances frantically in his hotel room or when he recites "California Dreaming", line by line, in an extremely serious voice. I think I will have to rent this one again to decide if I like it. My first impression was that this movie wasn't as great as I expected it to be.
It's a fun, (almost) realistic romp through a Hollywood-wannabe life. Crawford is very convincing as a Scottish hairstylist who makes the mistake of thinking that he is a participant for a "Platinum Hairoff" competition in LA, when he was only one of the 100 lucky draw viewers selected at random. Mayhem ensues and he is smitten by the idea of the trophy and wishes to steamroll his way into the contest come rain or shine. This includes a very funny cameo by (the usually safe bet) Frances Fisher, plus guest appearances from some big stars. The documentary style cut may require a couple of scenes to get used to, but stick with it. The film has its moments. Predictable in the end, but so are some of the best movies. It's the message of self-worth and persistence that makes it worthwhile. Interesting feel-good low-budget effort. Recommended rental for a light one and half hours.

That's where Rambo director George P. Cosmatos comes in and delivers Cobra. Stallone mumbles a lot and chews on a match like toothpick. He drives an incredible classic souped-up Mercedes (with nitrous boosts) and brandishes a submachine gun. When normal cops can't get it done, the Captain calls in the Cobra. Do I need to talk about the story? Well, okay. Remember the punk from the opening of The Terminator--the guys who gets Arnie's fist put through him? He's the head of some evil cult here. You never find out what they're about, but they just like killing people sadistically with axes and knives, etc. They're just really evil, bad people. Anyway, Stallone gets on the case, and dozens of corpses later he faces off with The Night Stalker, or Slasher, and...well, I'll let you find out. This DVD actually has some decent extras. I'm impressed. Tailor-made for the dedicated violent 80s movie fan, including commentary from the director(!) AND a documentary. You either know you're gonna love Cobra or hate it just by looking at the box cover art. So there you go.
