Astoundingly silly but incredibly popular, Police Academy is the first film in a seemingly endless franchise that takes aim at the men in blue. After a police academy drops all of its entrance requirements, all manner of misfits flood in, hoping to make it onto the force. One of these misfits, a lazy, aimless cadet played by Steve Guttenberg (Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby), was forced to enlist and tries whatever he can to get kicked out. But once he decides to stay, he tries anything and everything to finish his training, even as his drill instructor tries to shove him out. Featuring a wild bunch of strange supporting characters, from a female trainee who speaks below a whisper to a dominatrix instructor to a human sound-effects machine, Police Academy is mindless but fun. --Robert Lane ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Police Academy
A new mayor, forces the local police academy to open its doors to all. Naturally a variety of people show up, for training. There's Mahoney, a guy given the option of jail or the police academy, Jones the human sound effects machine, Barbara, the film developer, Hightower, a florist, etc. The Commisioner has Capt Harris, try to force the undeserable people out of the academy. Typical 80's comedy, is enjoyable and funny, and holds up after many viewings. The DVD version of the movie, looks good and sounds good, but there aren't to many extras.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE MOVIE THAT STARTED THE WHOLE SERIES
A MALCONTENT [STEVE GUTTENBERG] GETS FORCED TO ENLIST IN THE POLICE ACADEMY. VERY FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING ON ALL LEVELS. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS FILM IS MICHAEL WINSLOW, THE MAN WHO PLAYS LARVELL JONES, WHOSE A HUMAN SOUND EFFECTS MACHINE. A CULT CALSSIC BY ALL MEANS. OF COURSE, THERE'S NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE SCRIPT OR ITS STORY, BUT IT'S JUST FUNNY. A MUST FOR ANYONE THAT LIKES TO LAUGH THEIR A.. OFF. FOLLOWED BY SIX SEQUELS, AN ANIMATED TV SERIES, AND INSPIRED A LIVE-ACTION TV SERIES.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the most humourous police work ever performed!
First there was TV's Barney Miller, then the short-lived Police Squad, and now the first of seven POLICE ACADEMY films. Steve Guttenberg, who appeared in DINER two years before this film,is Carey Mahoney,a parking lot attendant who is arrested following termination from his job. At the police station where he's booked he meets Larvell Jones(Michael Winslow) who himself has been arrested for disturbing the peace. Winslow is famous for vocal impersonations of objects in action. So Carey and Larvell join the Metropolitan Police Academy as an alternative to jail. Also joining are Eugene Tackleberry(the late David Graf) who's a gun-lover,Karen Thompson(Kim Cattrall) who becomes Carey's girlfriend,Moses Hightower(football great Bubba Smith) who's a florist,George Martin(Andrew Rubin) who pretends to be Latin to score with women,Doug Fackler(Bruce Mahler) who joins against his wife's wishes(she joins 2 sequels later against HIS wishes!),Kyle Blankes,a mean-spirited fella and his buddy Chad Copeland, also mean-spirited. Carey misbehaves as much as he can to get evicted, because he initially didn't want to join the PA. He later changes his mind. George Gaynes is Commandant Eric Lassard and George R. Robertson is Commissioner Henry Hurst. G.W. Bailey of TV's M*A*S*H,is lieutenant Thaddeus Harris, who with the help of Kyle and Chad, rids the academy of undesirables("scumbuckets" as Lt. Harris calls them). Memorable scenes include Carey teaching Schwarzenegger-ish Hightower how to drive in Chad's car! The car is damaged and Chad and Kyle put the blame on Carey who dare him to "throw the first punch",since Carey was initially scheming to be evicted. Also part of the cast is Marion Ramsey as Laverne Hooks,a short,soft-spoken African-American woman. Take note of how in another scene, she gets loud and nasty towards a criminal("DON'T MOVE,DIRTBAG!"). That quote would be used in the sequels as well. Leslie Easterbrook of TV's Laverne & Shirley is Seargent Callahan who along with Lt. Harris, trains the cadets. Another memorable scene is where a concealed hooker performs oral sex on Commandant Lassard while he stands behind a podium. Carey was co-concealed inside the podium, the hooker emerged,Carey remained, and Lassard thought Carey performed the sexual act! Also,Martin,in drag, sneaks into the girls' dormitory and is finally caught by Callahan, who removes his wig, brassiere and dress. This popular film was directed by Hugh Wilson, who'd subsequently direct THE FIRST WIVES CLUB. Guttenberg stuck around for PA2,3 and 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way better than I thought it would be
When I went to rent this yesterday in the 20th anniversary edition, I wasn't expecting alot, but I liked it so much I ended up buying it. I'm gonna buy some of the other Police Academy movies too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I still don't own it.
I still want this movie, but I don't got it yet. I know it's funny because I saw it in theatres back in 1984. I almost died laughing. Same with my dad. Yes you heard me right, my dad who let me see any movie brought me into this movie when I was 9. My mom didn't like my dad taking me to any movie out there. Soon or later I will get this movie and maybe get the box set that was just realesed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Police Academy 3 was a great comedy
I loved Police Academy 3, it will always make you laugh. The comedy never stops in this great action film. All of the Police Academy movies are great and very funny..

5-0 out of 5 stars The graduates of the original train new recruits
This time the city has decided to shutdown of their police academies, so know it's between Lassard and Mauser's academies to compete to see which academy is the best and can stay open. Mahoney, Hightower, Jones, Tackelberry, etc are training new recruits including Sweet Chuck, and Zed(the gangleader in P.A. 2). There are many great gags, as one would come to expect, Mauser loses his eyebrows this time. There's a great Blue Oyster bar scene with Proctor. If you liked the first two you should enjoy this one, however it is tamer than the prievious Police Academy films, this would be one for the whole family to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Police Academy
Police Academy 3 Back In Training. Is Probabaly the best out of all seven. The others are Exellent but this one is Faboulous.
If you have not seen this movie yet.The cast is faboulous , It is a great family comedy. Kids will love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars hijinks and hilarity
A film by Jerry Paris

If you have seen any of the "Police Academy" movies, you know exactly what you are going to get with "Police Academy 3: Back in Training". This is a screwball comedy dealing with the police force and a police academy. All of the major protagonists are very likable characters, however, and this has been the charm of the series (at least for those who think the series has charm). It is fun to follow the antics and hijinks of the squad of new recruits as they grow into police officers who always save the day no matter how ridiculous things gets. And no, that is not giving away the ending of any "Police Academy" movie.

Having graduated from the Academy in the first movie and being given their first assignment in the second movie, Commadant Lassard's (George Gaynes) favorite recruits are called back to help Lassard save his beloved Academy. The city is threatening to close one of its two police academies and there will be an evaluation team deciding which academy will remain open and which will close its doors for good. The competition is between Lassard's Academy and that of Lieutenant Mauser (Art Mertrano). Mauser will stop at nothing to keep his academy open. Lassard calls back his favorite recruits: Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), Tackleberry (David Graf), Hightower (Bubba Smith), Jones (Michael Winslow) and the soft voiced Hooks (Marion Ramsey). They join Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), a favorite instructor from the first film. Together, they mess things up in the attempt to look good for the evaluation team, but they are earnest enough that they can't help but win you over (all the while you are laughing).

When if first saw this movie ten to fifteen years ago, I loved it (and all the other "Police Academy" movies). Having grown up a bit, I understand that they aren't particularly great movies, but I still found "Police Academy 3" to be a lot of fun to watch. It remains funny, and charming, and reminds me of when I first watched the movie. It is a bit of nostalgia for me. The only downside to this movie: the return of Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait), the former gang leader from the second movie who is now a cadet at Lassard's academy. Naturally. Zed aside, fun movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars They're back where they started!
March 1986 saw the theatrical release of this film. The Metropolitan Police Academy Class of 1984 are "back in training" due to the possibility of one of two academies becoming defunct. A hired committee evaluates and compares the two academies,Commandant Eric Lassard's(George Gaynes) and Lieutant Mauser's(Art Metrano). Mauser hires Kyle Blankes and Chad Copeland, who both return after appearing in the first film,to rig Lassard's academy(Mauser wants to keep his and kill Lassard's). The devious duo come up with various tasks for Lassard's academy members. Much of the previous cast members appear in this film. Bobcat Goldthwait and Tim Kazurisnky return in this film, now members of the Metropolitan Police Academy. Now joining is Doug Fackler's wife, who two years ago, dissuaded Doug from joining! Doug's philosophy is "a woman's place is in the home". Also there's newcomer Karen Adams,a blonde beauty who also joins and whom Carey Mahoney(Steve Guttenberg) becomes attracted to. The villains in this film are terrorists at an outdoor luncheon. So the MPA members go undercover in wetsuits bringing the terrorists to justice. Mauser's academy becomes defunct which means Art Metrano would not return for the following sequels. Memorable scenes include Mauser losing his eyebrows via duct tape. This happened when at a pub,Carey blindfolds Mauser with the tape. Carey revolves a glass of beer, and champagne in another glass, same shape and size. Mauser plays the guessing game and wins. Proctor(Lance Kinsey) rapidly removes the tape, thus removing Mauser's eyebrow hairs. So Mauser gets a fake pair. Well, that was a much smaller mess of hair than what happened in PA2. The hooker, seen in the first film, also returns in this one. She does a favor for Proctor. Another funny scene,is where after a romantic escapade between the two,the hooker sweetly and gradually evicts Proctor from her hotel suite while he's still naked. He receives stares from shocked passersby! Also returning is Leslie Easterbrook as Lt. Callahan. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Police Academy 5 - Assignment: Miami Beach" (USA 1988)
Many movie critics say that "Police Academy 5" is a TURKEY, but in my opininon, it is a real improvement over the not-knowing-where-it-was-going "Police Academy 4". "- Assignment: Miami Beach" has some funny (indeed, absolutely ridiculously unbelievable) moments and is probably to many people one of the best of the series. The movies reached their high point with the hilarious "Police Academy 6" (1989), but the whole hilarity of the series was destroyed with 1994's embarassing "Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow". "Police Academy 5" is great... buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Metropolitan Police Academy comes to Florida
The Metropolitan Police Academy comes to Florida in this film. There's a new prankster there,Commandant Eric Lassard's nephew Nick, who's a Miami Beach cop. I believe Steve Guttenberg chose to film "Three Men And A Baby" instead of doing this sequel. This film has a new star character,Sgt. Moses Hightower(Bubba Smith). Captain Harris(G.W. Bailey) and Lt. Proctor(Lance Kinsey) discover overlooked files late one evening regarding Eric's tenure with the MPA. Eric was slightly over the mandatory retirement age, saddening his colleagues. Eric himself is half-happy because he's been nominated for a Police Officer Of The Decade award at a ceremony in Miami Beach. Eric's retirement is announced following graduation of the MPA's Class of 1988. So Harris does all he can to succeed Eric. Eric takes his "band of misfits",as Harris would call them,to Miami Beach, including new graduate Thomas "House" Conklin, who was a member of the short-lived Citizens On Patrol team in the previous sequel. Harris and Proctor fly to MB as well, separate from Eric ad his gang. Harris and Proctor take a private plane. At the airport upon arriving, the first thing Eric sees is his nephew apprehending a wallet thief. One of Nick's first pranks is,on the beach,he borrows a friend's sunblock and writes the word 'dork' on a sunbathing Harris' bare chest. Harris arises, only to be met with hysterical laughter and comments from other beach patrons. Harris tells the mayor,"I don't mean to insult your city, but the people here are very rude and hostile.". The mayor replies,"I'm sorry to hear that,Captain Dork!". Now for the crime:a trio of thieves break into a museum and remove rare diamonds from a showcase. The thieves kidnap Eric, and later Harris, taking them both on a boat that the thieves are about to sink with Eric and Harris in it. Eric would later knock out one of the thieves himself, recovering the stones. Also,in the very same water,a crocodile on the loose is about to kill Harris, loose in the water. Hightower wrestles with the creature and rescues Harris. The thieves have been apprehended, the MPA members are back home with Nick in tow,and each officer is awarded a medal of satisfactory work from the city of Miami. Hightower receives another medal, this one for his bravery, saving Harris' life and is also promoted to lieutenant. Then, after Eric delivers his nearly farewell speech,Commissioner Henry Hurst announces by popular demand that Eric stay at the MPA.

2-0 out of 5 stars one of the weaker offerings in the Police Academy series
A film by Alan Myerson

"Police Academy 5" is a disappointment. Sure, it is a Police Academy movie, so we know it is light slapstick humor, but this one is not nearly as good as any of the previous Police Academy movies. This fifth film is subtitled "Assignment Miami Beach" and this means that some of our favorite officers will be returning and heading south to Florida.

I'll try to sum this up as succinctly as possible, as the plot to this movie isn't terribly important (or well done, for that matter). Plot point 1: Captain Harris (G.W. Bailey) is after the job of Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes). Lassard has reached the mandatory retirement age, and Harris is going to make sure that Lassard retires. Meanwhile, Lassard is headed down to Florida to receive the award of "Police Officer of the Decade", and he wants his favorite recruits (now officers) to come with him. This brings Hightower (Bubba Smith), Tackleberry (David Graf), Jones (Michael Winslow), Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook) and the soft-voiced Hooks (Marion Ramsey) to Florida. Meanwhile, there is a robbery of a stash of diamonds from a museum (it seems), and due to a mix up at the airport, Lassard unknowingly switches bags with the thief. The thief will stop at nothing to get the diamonds back. Hilarity is supposed to ensue.

Unfortunately, hilarity does not ensue. For a fan of the Police Academy movies, the fifth installment is somewhat cute and friendly and easy going (perfect for kids, really), but it is lacking some of the heart and humor of the earlier films in the series. This one only has a PG rating, compared to the R of the first film, so it is plain that this has turned into a family friendly series. Part of the problem with this movie is the lack of Officer Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), who left the series after the fourth movie. While these have always been ensemble movies, Mahoney has been something of the heart and the closest thing to a "main character" that the Police Academy movies had. He is replaced by Lassard's nephew, Nick Lassard (Matt McCoy). Nick Lassard is a police officer in Miami and, like Mahoney, is a friendly, smart-aleck, womanizer. He just isn't as likeable as Mahoney was (as hard as McCoy tries), and feels like a poor replacement for Mahoney (who isn't even mentioned in the movie). Nick has a love interest, also a cop, in Kate (Janet Jones, better known as Wayne Gretzky's wife).

Overall, "Police Academy 5" feels flat, and much less funny than the earlier (though still silly) Police Academy movies. It may be cheap entertainment, but it's just not well made cheap entertainment.

-Joe Sherry

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Film
This is a great family film. It was good, but would have got 5 stars instead of 4 if Steve Guttenberg was in it. But it was still funny. Also, Bobcat Goldwaith stopped at this point too, but the rest of the goofy cast is still here. Larvell Jones, Eugine Tackleberry, Moses Hightower, Hooks (I forget her last name), Debbie Callahan, Thaddues Harris, Procter, Tommy Cronklin/House, Nick Lassard, Kate (I forget her last name
too) and who could forget jolly Eric Lassard. In this fourth sequel in the funny series, the academy goes to Miami Beach to celebrate Lassard's retirment. But criminals, kidnap Lassard, his force tried to save him. While, so it seems, that Nick Lassard took over the place of Mahoney. Alot of people like Nick better than Mahoney, but I would have to disagree, Mahoney was better. The criminals in this film are goofy and hopeless. And finally, after all the wait, the whole series is finally available on dvd. They will be seprate and in a box set. You should get the box set. It will be coming out on April 6. The first film will have a great commentary, but the rest of the films will just have a trailer and a making of reel. So, a great film, a great series. Mark your calender for April 6 because, Police Academy is coming to dvd. Oh ya, I have a dvd review of the Police Academy box set, and I think you will find it useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS
This is the second best in the series of seven movies. It has drop down humor, and great jokes. One of my favorites, Douglas Fackler returns. Another great family film and is great for a party. The crew is all here, Larvell Jones, Moses Hightower, Hooks, Doug Fackler, Eugine Tackleberry, Debbie Calahan Nick Lassard, Thaddeus Harris, Procter, and Eric Lassard. And finally, after a long wait, the Police Academy series is coming to dvd. You can buy them seprate, or in a box set that I recommend you buying. The series will be realesed on April 6. This an ok dvd when it comes to features, it has a trailer and a making of reel. Here are some good parts in this movie, when Jones does Terminator, when Fackler knockes a lit cigar into the fireworks box, when hightower raps and when Tackleberry's granade gets shot up into the air and lands on Harris's car. So, mark your calender for April 6 because Police Academy is coming to dvd.
Actors:
Michael Winslow, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Bruce Mahler, Lance Kinsey, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, G.W. Bailey, Matt McCoy, George Gaynes, George R. Robertson, Gerrit Graham and Kennith Mars. So get ready to laugh with the worlds funniest police force, on dvd.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Go ahead, make my christmas."
This is basically the same cast line up as 1988's Police Academy 5 - Assignment: Miami Beach except Officer "House" Conklin isn't here and accident causing Sgt. Fackler makes his return with a bang...literally. The rest of the classic gang (minus Mahoney, of course) are all here: Lassard, Hightower, Hooks, Callahan, Motormouth Jones, and of course Tackleberry! This is the one where they go after the 3 goofy robbers and their "mastermind". I think the only people who give Police Academy 6 bad reviews just don't like these movies because this one is filled with memorable moments. In defense of how funny the movie is and in case you forgot, here is a list of many moments of hilarity that take place in City Under Siege:

1. Tackleberry shoots the milk carton in his Dad's hand
2. Hooks yells at the uppity guy after giving him all those citations and having his car towed
3. Callahan working out!
4. Fackler knocks a lit cigar into a box of fireworks
5. Hightower slams his hand down on a table sending Tackleberry's grenade onto Capt. Harris' car
6. Hooks & Hightower rap
7. Jones does Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee, & the Terminator

Let's not forget those classic Harris & Proctor moments:
1. Proctor sings Christmas songs & Harris misses the robbery
2. Harris gets glued to his chair
3. Harris & Proctor go undercover as window washers
4. Harris & Proctor go undercover as armored car security
5. Harris and the exploding dye pack

The list goes on! What more evidence do you need? These movies are great. Very glad to see they're all making it to DVD finally. A 7 pack set will be available...I highly recommend picking one up!

5-0 out of 5 stars More adventures of the Metropolitan Police Academy
Yes,Commandant Eric Lassard(George Gaynes) is still here. He was supposed to retire after the end of the previous sequel due to age limits. Commissioner Henry Hurst(George R. Robertson) announced in the last scene that Eric continue being the MPA's commandant until he personally decides to retire. That brought relief and happiness to Eric's colleagues, except Captain Harris(G.W. Bailey) and Lieutenant Proctor(Lance Kinsey),of course. In the sixth film of this Police Academy series,it opens with Harris and Proctor on a stakeout one Sunday morning in civilian attire. They missed the Wilson Heights gang striking. They didn't know until another cop from another precinct told them. It turns out that the mastermind of the gang is the city mayor(Kenneth Mars). Matt McCoy returns as Eric's nephew Nick, now an MPA member. Douglas Fackler(Bruce Mahler) returns after being written out of the previous two sequels. We even see Nick and Doug meeting, exchanging handshakes. The mayor's hobby is collecting model ships, which he built himself. Harris complimented the mayor's fabulous collection, but he accidentally destroyed one of the ships. One funny scene was where a dye pack exploded after Harris walked out of a bank with it. The dye discharged all over him. That almost happened to Nick, who claims he found dropped stolen money and was gonna give it to Commissioner Hurst. The Wilson Heights gang planted stolen jewelry inside Commandant Lassard's office, thus the commandant being falsely accused of the theft, and him and his team being suspended. Harris and Hurst found the stolen jewelry. The mayor, disguised as Commissioner Hurst,is taken away after the MPA learn that he masterminded the gang's crimes. The mayor had the gang set up a crime wave in an area of property that he planned to devalue and purchase. So Eric and his gang were reinstated and in the last scene,at a ceremony,Lt. Hightower(Bubba Smith) and Harris swap assigned seats and Harris ascends into the friendly skies with helium-filled latex balloons attached to the chair he's sitting in. Nick cuts the ties holding the balloons. We hear Harris exclaiming,"Oh,Proctor,Proctor,PROCTOR!!". It's amazing that there were six Police Academy movies made and released one by one in a six-year period(1984 to 1989). It's like a long-running television series. Say goodbye to McCoy since he would not return for the seventh and most recent film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
This movie made me howl with laughter. One of my favorites, Fackler returns. Buy the pack when it comes out in april on dvd.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Police Academy movie of the 7
Police Academy 6 City Under Seige is by far the best movie of all time!!! It totally makes Police Academy 5, which was previously my favorite movie, seem like Gigli. Marion Ramesy preformance was outstanding as Sgt. Laverne Hooks, her best role yet. And who could forget the classic memorable acting skills as Darryl Honriques who played the man in a hurry. His talent showed that no other actor could pull out such an outstanding preformance. You could tell by watching his acting skills that he was in a hurry. No doubt about it. And who could forget Allison Mack who played the little girl. In past movies she played characters such as little crying child or girl with ice cream cone. This was her major breakthru preformance as the little girl. She has now gone onto play in movies with such roles as teen in classroom and girl with braces. And Gerry Lack who played an unforgetable role as an old lady. The makeup job done to transform this 56 year old woman into a 58 year old woman was supurbub. Lots of time, money, and effort was put into perfecting this transformation. It was said in a rumor that half of the budget of the film was part of her makeup job. And she pulled of the role perfectly. Most older actors have a problem of acting too young for their roles. Like Wilfrid Brimley in Cocoon or Scatman Crothers in Twilight Zone the Movie. But not Gerry Lack, she pulled off the role of being old perfectly. Michael Winslow is also one of the coolest actors of all time. Like that time in Police Acedemy 1 where he makes a siren noise and nobody has any idea it was him or that time in Police Academy 2 where he makes a different siren noise, which sounds similar to the first siren noise but has an extra "E-rahh" at the end instead of "E-rahh, E-rahh". Don't get me started on that siren sound from Police Academy 3, that one was a classic.
I am also thinking of starting my own Police Academy fan web site where people from all over the world can send pictures of their favorite characters. Also I will be starting a petition to have an 8th Police Academy movie made. Yes, an 8th movie. It will be made even if it means me directing it. I can not wait to get this movie on DVD watch it with my surround sound. Right now I only own this movie on Beta and VHS, so I am missing out on the DVD quality sounds of the police cars driving, the time where they shoot the guns, and Michael Winslow. And at a price of only $12.73, you can't go wrong. I would truthfully spend anywhere from $25-$35 for this movie. I am such a big fan of the series that I even have the rare one and only copy of Police Academy 1 signed by Bob Guttenburg which says is the cousin of Steve Guttenburg. I had even spent $128.13 on E-Bay to recieve this one and only copy which is sought after by many collectors.
And for those of you that think Ski Patrol or Meatball IV is the best movie of all time, you're wrong. What are you thinking its obviouly POLICE ACADEMY 6: CITY UNDER SEIGE!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The last good "Police Academy" movie
I enjoed watching Police Academies 1,2, and 3, but I probably laughed harder watching this one. G.W. Bailey (Cpt.Harris) and especially Lance Kinsley (Proctor) are the life of this movie, not to mention several other actors. Bailey did an excellent job of acting, especially during the Blue Oyster scene. That was the funniest Blue Oyster part out of all the movies! It was great to see Harris come back to the series and also to see several different characters play important roles like David Spade, Sharon Stone and several others. Unfortunately, this was the last good police academy movie. The ending was kind of depressing as I realized characters like Zed, Mahoney, and other crack ups would leave the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT FAMILY COMEDY
Police Academy 4 citizens on patrol is a great movie.
Kids would love this one all the police academy movies are so funny but this one is one of the best. The charecers are so funny. This movie is steve guttenbergs last. It is a real disapointment that he is not in the other movies.
If you like great family comedy's this is the movie for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!
The Metropolitan Police Academy's commandant Eric Lassard(George Gaynes) has initiated a community relations program called Citizens On Patrol. That's where ordinary citizens witness criminal behavior and bring the criminals to justice. Much of the original gang is still here,so are Zed(Bobcat Goldthwait) and Swechiuk(Tim Kazurinsky). G.W. Bailey returns in this sequel as Captain Thaddeus Harris(he was a lieutenant in the first film). Lt. Proctor(Lance Kinsey) is now a member of Harris' precinct. Bailey returned because Art Metrano was written out for good after the previous sequel. Chad Copeland(Scott Thomson) is part of Harris' team also. Sgt. Moses Hightower(Bubba Smith) says in one of the first scenes,"I believe Brother Swechiuk is suggesting we recruit in our old neighborhood." Lassard strongly agrees. Some of the COP team members are Lois Feldman(Billie Bird) & Thomas "House" Conklin(Tab Thacker),an overweight black guy who resembles one of The Fat Boys members. Two other young male members(Brian Backer and David Spade)are assigned to the program after they're tried for disorderly conduct via their skateboards in a shopping mall. Carey Mahoney(Steve Guttenberg) who was present at the trial, suggested the idea to the presiding judge. Again,it's another gang making a large illegal mess. This film features Sharon Stone who was in 1986,when this film was made,not-so-famous. Spade would also become a major celebrity several years later, becoming a member of NBC's Saturday Night Live. Stone is Claire Mattson, who joins COP also. She and Carey went partners in whatever either did. In the last scene,Zed tells Swechiuk,"You look a little like Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun'(one of 86's biggest films)." Also Carey and Claire toast the MPA with champagne("To the academy") while ascending to the friendly skies in a hot air balloon. Remember Metrano losing his hair in PA2,and his eyebrows in PA3? Well, one funny scene is where Harris, after showering is about to apply his deodorant, and it's stolen and replaced with mace! The stinging was so painful that he couldn't bring his arms down. They were braced. He angrily warns that those caught with mace from that point on would be reprimanded and fined. Also Harris' lips are glued to the mouthpiece of a bullhorn after Carey applies the strong, powerful adhesive. This sequel would be Guttenberg's last. Goldthwait and Kazurinsky were written out. Guttenberg bowed out of the three yet-to-come sequels in favor of "Three Men And A Baby". Well, that's my assumption. Well, the next three sequels would feature a new prankster.

3-0 out of 5 stars Release The Extended Widescreen Version On DVD!
When Police Academy 4 originally premiered on Network Television, additional footage was added that was not seen in the theatrical cut. What's amazing is how well these extra scenes help move the story along, which makes you wonder why they were deleted in the first place? (Most likely because of the running time difference from 102 minutes to the theatrical release of 88 minutes.)

Some of the best cut stuff is of Steve Guttenberg and Sharon Stone, whose relationship seemed a bit empty in the theatrical cut. But with the extra scenes, which included Mahoney taking Claire Mattson (Stone) home in a squad car, while doing a little stuntdriving, followed by a bit of flirtatious fun back at her place, this really added another dimension to their relationship, and gave more meaning to the ending, with them up in the weather balloon together. In fact Sharon Stone's role in the theatrical version seemed very small indeed. But with these added scenes as well as another between Lt. Harris (G.W. Bailey), her screentime is lengthened considerably.

Other cut scenes include additional banter between Sweetchuck (Tim Mazurinsky) & Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait), some fancy skateboarding by Mahoney, more screentime for Butterworth (Derek McGrath), and even an explanation of how Zack (Randall "Tex" Cobb) ended up in jail in the first place.

Those scenes, along with a few others totaling about fourteen minutes, are included separately as bonus material on the DVD. But hopefully, Warner Brothers will eventually release the movie with these scenes put back in, as well as showing the film in the proper Widescreen format (1.85:1) instead of Fullframe (1.33:1) as it is shown here. Why they did this (as well as also releasing Police Academy 5 Fullscreen on DVD) is anybody's guess.

The image quality on the DVD is very cropped and grainy looking. Other extras include a short 8 1/2 minute "making of" featurette, with interviews from some of the cast and crew, and the original theatrical trailer. If you would like to see the expanded version of Police Academy 4: Citizen's On Patrol released on DVD, contact Warner Brothers Home Video, or write your own review here. Until then, I'll see you all back at the Academy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny!
This is the first movie in the Police Academy series and it's funny, Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith and G.W. Bailey were all good and so was the rest of the cast. This movie is Rated R and a bit cruder then the later movies which I think were rated PG or PG-13. The later movies were quite popular with kids and I remember when they came out with Police Academy action figure toys which my nephews owned and I also seem to recall an animated series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funniest Police Video Ever!
Out of all the police videos I've seen, this is the most histarically funniest police video. They had great uniforms and Liutenant Harris (G.W. Bailey) acted very funny. His nazi's acting and teaching very strict dissiplin. They've also got neat songs. The song Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood is perfect for a horror scene. You Police video lovers out there, you definetally gotta get this movie. It IS REALLY HISTARICALLY FUNNY!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Great Guttenberg
Well well, where does a Guttenberg good guy like me start. Guess I should stat at the Turner family compond back in the winter of 87. That is the time and the place where I first saw this film and were my love of all things Police Acadamy and Stevie Guttenberg started.I do declare that I howled and howled with laughter as the comical plot unfolded in front of my water drenched eyes reaching the stunning riot finale. Since that day I have been forever touched by Police Acadamy and left with the view that Police Acadamy was and still is an overlooked American comedy classic. Lets start then by talking about Stevie Guttenberg's undoubted comic acting abilities.

Indeed I first think we should be talking and thinking about Guttenberg with the likes of Ted Danson & Pee Wee Herman in mind. We need to place Guttenberg on a comic plinth, to establish his comic postion within the halls of the great Hollywood tradition of Slapstick comics. If you look at the rest of the Acadamy trilogy, the pictures Guttenberg did not star in are noticable worse and I mean noticable. Of course they still have the gags that you want and some of the characters you want but the films do need Guttenberg's comic quips and timing to bring the sequels in line with the first installment .Theres just something about Guttenbergs charm and confidence that as ive spoken about earlier I liken to the great Ron Howard and like Howard's Richie Cuningham, Guttenberg makes the Mahoney role his own with a combination of style and slap stick nonsense. Oh yes I did say nonsense and theres plenty of that too.

So what about the film I hear you wannabee Guttenbergs cheer? Well As a kid I really connected with the childish, toilet humour that is the backbone of this great movie and the whole of the trilogy. The film contains so many references be it sexual or personal and so many in jokes that there really seems to be a laugh a minute. remeber all this is good, harmless humour. Classic gags and scenes such as Captin Harris going head first at great speed into a Horses rear is funny but not offensive. Its childish, stupid and mind numing comedy but it is comedy and bloody good it is too.

Of course all things had to come too an end and Hollywood in there great wisdom made alot of sub rate Police Acadamy's in the years following the critical and commercial success of the Original.Fear not though theres still the original & I plead with all of you comic lovers out there in the big wide world to got THIS BOUGHT. Nuff Said

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the lot
I admit that I got plenty of laughs out of sequels 2 through 4. Installments 5 & 6 were okay, but nothing special. As another reviewer has already pointed out, once Steve Guttenberg left there was little reason to keep watching.
The first Police Academy movie is truly the cream of the crop, though, as is usually the case with any series of movies.
The premise is simple enough - the new female mayor has dropped the height/weight/physical regulations of the police force, and opened up the police academy to anyone who fancies themselves as a cop. Naturally, this leads to a crazy assortment of oddballs rocking up for training.
Among this crew is Hightower, a seven foot plus man built like a brick wall; Tackleberry, a gung-ho trigger happy gun buff who seems a sandwich or two short of a picnic; Hooks, a little woman with an even littler voice (until the right moment); Jones, whose vocal chords can replicate just about any sound from video games to machine guns; and last but definitely not least, Mahoney, who is at the Academy only as part of a deal to keep him out of jail for his latest idiot exploits.
The latter cannot quit the Academy under the rules of the deal, but can be thrown out without landing in jail as a result. Consequently, he pulls every stunt under the sun to try and get himself kicked out, to no avail.
It is no surprise that, somewhere along the line, misfit Mahoney discovers that he might actually like to be a cop, and decides to stick at it rather than put all his efforts into getting thrown out.
The climax of the movie, a riot in which the cadets accidentally find themselves smack in the middle of, proves that even the worst hopeless cases can do good for themselves.
The final scene, in which all the cadets graduate, is about as uplifting as a screwball comedy can get.
Steve Guttenberg and G W Bailey really make this movie with their constant interaction and clashes. Bailey was at his best in this film as the sergeant who was determined to 'encourage' all the 'loser cadets' to quit as soon as possible.
This is an excellent movie. It rolls along at a great pace, building up to an exciting climax with a more than satisfying ending. The movies that came after were really just eye candy after this one - pleasant to watch, but not very substantial. If you don't have this film, and you're a fan of this type of comedy, do yourself a big favour and buy a copy. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hats Of To Guttenberg
I first got into Police Academy when I was 10. We rented this 80's stunner from the video shop as my Mum wanted to keep me amused for a few hours so she could do the ironing. Well all I can say is the rest is history and from that moment on I was hooked on the whole Police Academy trilogy and Guttenbergs style and brilliant comic timing.
So why is it such a good picture?Well from the comical brass music at the start of the picture to Guttenbergs stunning comical performance which I put up there with the greats like Chaplin in "Modern Times" the film just provides a gag a minute. Guttenberg of course went on to do a great body of work like "Short Circuit" and the oscar wining "Coocoon" not to mention "Three men and a little baby. If ever you needed to select a symbol for 80's comedy it would surley have to be Guttenberg. So get some popcorn and grab a coke and sit back with your partner to the perfect comedy night in. A much inferior sequel to the first hit film, Police Academy 2 nevertheless manages to keep a free-spirited, juvenile tone. Steve Guttenberg (Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby) returns as the charming goof-off, now graduated from the academy. He and the usual batch of misfits are let loose on the streets as rookie cops, wreaking havoc everywhere they go as they do battle with terrorists threatening the city. Some choice moments from the likes of Michael Winslow, as the man whose voice can imitate any sound, barely compensate for this being a pale imitation of the original movie. --Robert Lane ... Police Academy 2 is a funny movie, I even liked it more then the first movie and I think Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith and David Graf were great as Mahoney, Hightower and Tackleberry and the rest of the cast is good too. The first movie in this series was good but Police Adademy 2 just made me laugh more and I remember watching this movie with my nephews who liked the Police Academy movies so much they got the action figure toys and besides the toys I think this movie series also got an animated series. I recommend Police Academy 2, it's really entertaining and this and the third movie are my favorites!

5-0 out of 5 stars The first post-graduation assignment
This film was theatrically released on March 29,1985 precisely 53 weeks after the release of the first film. Some cast members of the first film have not returned for the sequel, and some have appeared for the first time such as Lance Kinsey as Seargeant Proctor, who'd appear in the next 4 sequels and Art Metrano as Lieutenant Mauser. Mauser's academy is separate from Commandant Eric Lassard's(George Gaynes). Mauser is the watch commander for those who were cadets in the first films(they are now seargeants). Also with an academy of his own is Eric's brother Pete(Howard Hesseman). Pete needed to "get his hands on some healthy young men",as he tells Eric on the phone. So the Metropolitan Police Academy's Class of 1984 are referred to Pete's academy. Pete has a "healthy young woman" also, her being soft-spoken Laverne Hooks(Marion Ramsey). The '84 graduates screw up,aggravating Pete. They are sent to put and end to the raunchy behavior of a dangerous gang who is terrorizing the city. Here we meet two more newcomers,stand-up comedian Bobcat Goldthwait who plays the leader of the gang and Tim Kazurinsky, late of Saturday Night Live,as Mr. Swechiuk,a home furnishings store proprietor. Gun buff Eugene Tackleberry(the late David Graf),while on motorcycle duty, meets the girl of his dreams, and marries in the final scene,Kathleen Kirkland(Colleen Camp). While preparing for his first date out on the town with Kathleen,Eugene splashes gun oil on his face as an alternative to cologne! Also,he gives Kathleen a pair of earrings in the shape of miniature handcuffs. The gang terrorizes a supermarket, knocking down merchandise and opening packages. The gang wrecks havoc at a carnival also. The star character,Carey Mahoney(Steve Guttenberg) goes undercover as a gangster like the gang seen in this film, and brings them to justice with the help of his colleagues, including Laverne, who again angrily yells "DON'T MOVE DIRTBAG!" Then, there's the civil wedding ceremony of Eugene and Kathleen Kirkland Tackleberry with all of Eugene's colleagues present and Kathleen's brother and parents. Another funny scene is where Lt. Mauser is about to shampoo his hair. The shampoo is taken away and replaced with a strong glue, like Krazy Glue. Some of the removed hair ended up on his hands. So Proctor places a wig on Mauser's head. It looks totally different, the wig being straight auburn hair(Mauser's natural hair is black and permed). Also, not seen in theatres but on television,is the scene, following the wedding, where the gang members join the Metropolitan Police Academy. Zed,the gang leader became a new man upon joining and would return for the next two sequels.

Callahan. ...

What are you thinking its obviouly POLICE ACADEMY 6: CITY UNDER SEIGE!!! ... Read more
