5-0 out of 5 stars Honestly? Yeah, It's Good.
I've been a fan of this movie ever since it came out. It is hopelessly tacky and cheesy -- but that HAS to be it's intended charm... otherwise I could never explain Kristy Swanson's acting in here which appears to be cardboard on purpose. Basic premise is similar to the inferior original... Bavarian peasant girl is frozen by a sorcerer for 1000 years after attempting to marry a prince. She winds up in a Pennsylvania department store while "on tour" (she is her country's only source of international interest). While at this store, she is left in the care of an employee (William Ragsdale) who falls in love with her. Her home country of Hauptmann-Koenig sends an evil count (Terry Kiser) to watch after her to make sure nothing happens to the country's treasure because he intends to marry her someday. But, lo and behold... it seems that 1000 years has just passed! And it is discovered that if her necklace is removed, she can come to life! BUT WHO WILL THE MANNEQUIN FALL IN LOVE WITH? Tacky? Of course. It's fantastic fun. Of course, Meshach Taylor shows up to reprise his role of the flamboyantly gay, over-the-top Hollywood Montrose. If he hadn't signed on to do this role, they could never have done this movie.

The movie is not technically brilliant. This could never be deemed a critic's film. It's not a film, it's a movie. Considering that the fictional country of Hauptmann-Koenig spoke perfect American English in the 10th century proves that. It's an hour and a half of lighthearted, outrageous stupid fun that has held up pretty well over the course of a decade plus. Kristy Swanson's portrayal of the statue that looks like a mannequin, Jessie, is really quite brilliant and underrated as she adjusts to life in the 1990s, in which she cannot understand the concept of fashion circa 1991, stoplights and fire extinguishers. It includes the theme from the original, Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", which oddly, won the original "Mannequin" an Oscar. Go figure.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one's got it ALL!- action, comedy and romance!
This is a great film for all ages. It's the timeless tale of two star-crossed lovers destined to be together. Meshach Taylor returns as the hilariously sassy Hollywood Montrose. He brings an energy to every scene he is in. William Ragsdale and Kristy Swanson are great as the two star-crossed lovers. The movie has it all, comedy, action-adventure, and romance. It's a sassy, funny comedy; the perfect Friday night rental.

3-0 out of 5 stars A different live mannequin
This sequel to 1987's MANNEQUIN was a flop. Nobody from the first film appears in this one. This film stars William Ragsdale who starred in 1985's FRIGHT NIGHT. Kristy Swanson is the mannequin. This film is somewhat memorable for me because Meshach Taylor of TV's Designing Women was part of the cast. The only recycling is Starship's recording NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW which was played during the end credits like the first film. Swanson would later star in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer",that film later inspiring the TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny!
The only reason I own this movie is for the 12 minutes of pure laughter that is portrayed in the second story of this film. Like Twilight Zone and Creepshow, This film is dissected into multiple stories (3). The first one is kind of stupid. The second story is about anger and I have to say this is possibly the funniest Andrew "Dice" Clay I have ever seen. It was worth the money just to watch him in action even if it was really short. The last story has Dennis Leary and involves "lust", it is descent but not as good as Dice.

2-0 out of 5 stars One great segment, but that's it
There is only one reason to buy this film--the second vignette, "Anger." It is the funniest twenty minutes of film I have ever seen. Andrew "Dice" Clay is at his ranting raunchy best, getting off some of the best one-liners I've heard in ages. I've shown this to people who despise Dice, and they've howled. The rest of the film droops in comparison, despite excellent casting. The powers that be should have saved me some wear and tear on my VCR and put "Anger" first, because it's the only segment worth watching, believe me.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Lampoon" like it should to be!
After being blown away by another obscure National Lampoon flick, (The Don's Analyst) which was "Analyze This", only better -- I thought I should check this one out too. What's going on here? Another surprisingly sophisticated, laugh out loud film with an incredible cast. Denis Leary's "Lust" was a stylish little sexy ditty in the vein of "Rear Window." In "Anger," Andrew "Dice" Clay (who I normally despise) actually made me laugh out loud. But it was Joe Mantegna in "Greed" that really shocked me. This piece was nothing short of brilliant. An hour in length, it really is the centerpice of the whole film, and what makes it a keeper. I found it a cross between "To Die For" and "The Producers". This is sharp satire the way it used to be in the magazine's hey day. Intelligent, sexy, cutting edge stuff that pulls no punches. This one really has stayed with me. I've watched it several times now and it holds up great. The surprise "celebrity" cameos are a real hoot but they also lend an invaluable authenticity to the story. How come this wasn't in the theaters?

4-0 out of 5 stars Wowiee!!! I'm #1!!!
I'm the first person to review this! Am I the only one who saw it before? Favorite Deadly Sins is one of the funniest Lampoon movies, and definetely one of the best Lampoon made-for-cable movies. Divided into 3 segments Greed, Anger, and Lust, it features a HUGE celebrity cast: Joe Mantegna, Andrew "Dice" Clay, Denis Leary, Robert Culp, Brian Keith (Uncle Bill!), Ed Marinaro, Pia Zadora, William Ragsdale (Manniquien 2), Charlene Tilton, and one of my favorite actors, Gerrit Graham. Greed is the longest, starring Joe Mantegna as a TV producer who gets a waitress to kill her abusing family so he can turn it into a TV movie and ending with a great musical number. Anger stars Andrew "Dice" Clay as a man who has to go buy tampons for his wife, and ends up being killed. Lust stars Denis Leary as a security guard who falls in love with the babe who's in the window across from him. Very funny; I recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first but that'd be hard to beat!
FRIGHT NIGHT II picks up a few years after the first film and finds Brewster (William Ragsdale) in college and in therapy where his therapist has convinced him that vampires don't exist. Brewster ends up believing again soon enough though when Jerry Dandridge's sister (Julie Carmen) comes after him seeking blood. So, Brewster enlists the help of fearless vampire killer Peter Vincent (the late-great Roddy McDowal) land they're off to do battle once gain.

While not nearly as good as the original, FRIGHT NIGHT II is a lot of fun. As a matter of fact this maybe the only horror sequel not totally trashed by director Tommy Lee Wallace who trashed HALLOWEEN III years earlier and VAMPIRES: LOS MUERTOS years later. This sequel is full of effective humor and horror none of which however live up to anything in the first movie. That's understandable though. The first FRIGHT NIGHT is a classic as far as vampire genre pictures go and it's always hard to follow in the footsteps of that. So if you're a fan of the first movie or just a fan of the good old fashioned horror comedy then give FRIGHT NIGHT II a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is DVD quality?
I have bought a few cheapie $3.99 DVD movies. Though the picture was far from great, thery were no worse than VHS picture quality. I recently bought Fight Night Part II on DVD for $10.99 and the picture quality is atually worse than the VHS that I have! What the hell happened! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Artisan Entertainment is digging and releasing some old classics from their vaults, but if your going to release them like this then don't bother! This is by for the worst from Artisan. Bride of Re-Animator, Waxwork, and Lair of the White Worm were disappointents because of the poor picture quality, no widescreen formats, and lack of supplemental material, but Fright Night Part II takes the cake as their worst release! MGM may be getting lazy too and only releasing their titles only in Full Screen format, but at least their movies have good picture quality! Artisan needs to shape up or get out! Artisan should sell the rights of their older movies to Anchor Bay Entertainment so they could be properly released!

1-0 out of 5 stars For cryin' out loud...
Stop posting more than once for a movie, it's very annoying and unfairly tips the balance of the review ratings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, Boring, Stupid Sequel
If the idea of an evil killer transvestite vampire on rollerskates really does it for you, this is your movie. Otherwise, watching this film will use up 101 minutes of your life that you'll never get back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total DVD Disappointment
This is by far the worst DVD I have ever bought. The quality is worse than a VHS and this is a pan and scan version of a movie that was clearly shot in widescreen!

After the original movie, and its comical wit my expectations were high for this one. I was sorely let down. 80's gore replaced the fun that was a huge part of the first 'boy who cried wolf' concept. Too bad - the only good that came out of this purchase was a cool DVD cover case.

No more Artisan (the name is an oxymoron) titles - period. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Harmless Fun
Those who like shows like "Sex and the City" will certainly enjoy this romantic comedy about a group of hip friends in their late twenties. Their problems are essentially trying (and mostly failing) to find a sex partner and eventually a loved one. Infidelity, friendship, maturity and life choices are some of the subjects present in this little movie, providing a couple of laughs but not many memorable scenes. The acting is competent, the pacing is ok, but the plot and direction are nothing to write home about. All in all, a watchable flick and an entertaining enough one, even if it doesn`t rise above average material.

Good to watch once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a little harmless fun
Here is a film that pokes fun at both men & women, taking full advantage of every stereotype imaginable. In short, it does precisely what a light Romantic comedy is supposed to do! It's a whole lot of harmless fun along the way, too.

The plotline centers around the age-old problem of the straying husband. In this case, however, the fellow does not have a pre-meditated inclination to cheat on his wife. Rather, he picks up a stranded motorist (who somehow ends up being a courtesan) and gets caught by what seems to be an anti-prostitute SWAT team. And, his luck seems to go from bad to worse from there!

After his wife & her friends & her mother find out, the poor fellow begins his penance and all of the typical human rituals of attempting to get her to take him back. Thanks to his two buddies, the whole situation is put in the most zany perspective imaginable!

The film is almost a real-time movie as 90% of it takes place in a bar. One would think that the one-setting-framework would tend to get tedious, but there are enough twists & turns in the storyline to keep the viewer interested.

As is so often the case these days, you get the typical plain Jane knockout (capably played by Kimberly Williams). However, I could tell from the get-go that she was no plain Jane, no matter how much they tried to make her look like a geek.

If you want a light-hearted look at the serious issue of infidelity, this one would appear to be a clear-cut winner. Or, if you're simply in the market for another Romantic Comedy & good fun, you can do a whole lot worse than a little harmless sex.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining!
I watched this movie the other night and out of 4 that I had rented over the weekend (Whatever, the Dead Zone and War Zone) this one is the one that I enjoyed the most (with Whatever being a worthy second). I just really enjoyed the cast (all very eclectic unknowns) and the storyline, which was lighthearted and funny. I rented it having never heard of it before, but went with the "two thumbs up" stamp of approval that I generally agree with and this was no exception! I don't know if I'd give it a 5 star, but it's certainly better than average and better than most of the [types] that comes out these days.

3-0 out of 5 stars good acting, terrible story
though the actors are well casts, the movie just doesn't really work. The film is so dark from the beginning (look wise I mean) it is hard to watch. Also, even though this was a low budget indie, that doesn't make up for sloppy film making. Though Rachel Hunter has no purpose in this film and they shouldn't waste money on hiring her for that little cameo (could have spent money to reshot the scene when you can see the camera guy) the rest of the cast is great, especially Jonathan Silverman and Jessica Lundy as the sarcastic divorced couple who broke up over a magor misunder standing. Watch Silverman as he confesses his dirty little secret

4-0 out of 5 stars Priceless evenings entertainment
Excellent dialogue, one liners, reasonable acting; not to be taken seriously, this movie is really into character development. If you enjoyed Friends and Lovers, you'll like this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Coming of Age Film
Based upon a short story by Joyce Carol Oates (Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?), Smooth Talk stars a lovely Laura Dern in her first 'big' role. Dern plays a young woman, Connie, who is at the difficult time in her life when she is making the transition between girl and woman. She meets a attractive yet slightly scary older man played by Treat Williams.

I suppose the plot could have been handled in a lurid, trite manner, but the direction by Joyce Chopra, as well as the fine acting by Ms. Dern and Williams, make this film rise above what could have been a fairly pedestrian effort in lesser hands.

We've all been in Connie's world, the world that suddenly presents itself when the tie to one's parents begins to loosen. We watch, and cringe, at some of the choices Connie and her friends face, waiting and hoping that all turns out well when she makes some poor decisions. Williams plays Arnold Friend ("A Friend") to unctuous perfection. In the story, he's 30 but tries to acts 18; Williams fits right in.

I'm not going to give away the ending, but let's just say that Connie's parents have real reason to be concerned about their daughter and the choices she makes. The film does end differently than the short story.

James Taylor was the film's music director, and some of his classic music is prominently displayed here.

BTW, this film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1986. It's a shame that a excellent film such as this just seems to slip through the cracks. A DVD is really in order.

Highly Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back! Back! Back, foul demon of the night!
I loved watching this movie. Roddy McDowell was excellent in this fim as Peter Vincent, "Fearless Vampire Killer". Yeah, right. If this is what made him so famous on screen, why was he living in a small, cramped, and cluttered one bedroom apartment with a job hosting horror flicks on a show that scraped the bottom of the barrel in ratings??

As for Chris Sarandon, this is the best I've seen him look in a long time, especially in his vampire make-up. What's so attractive is that he is so suave when he seduces Evil Ed into taking his hand. The way he kidnapped Amy was classic too. Dandridge's 'attraction' to Amy was almost otherworldly, if a somewhat typical throwback to the B-Movies of the 1950's.

I especially liked when Charlie, the typically sex-starved teenager, gets curious and discovers his neighbor, Jerry Dandridge's secret. It's really funny when he tries to convince the policeman of a murder. Even Amy thought he was cracked.

Yes, the plot holes were there as far as the script, but at least no one was dumb enough to stand in the path of the vampire screaming. This is what gave the movie strength, despite the troubles with plot. Peter Vincent did stammer and cower after he visited Charlie's neighbor. It's amazing how he rebounds though.

I've seen the second installment of this movie and prefer this one to that one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern-day vampire classic! Not to be missed!
"Fright Night" is exactly that--a night full of the very best frights! Directed and written by horrormeister Tom Holland, "Fright Night" tells the very stylish tale of Charlie Brewster and his next-door neighbor. What's the significance of that coffin in the basement? Why are there gorgeous females entering the house and then exiting...in a body bag? Charlie wants to find out! So, he solicits the help of "vampire hunter," Peter Vincent, played to the hilt by the late/great Roddy McDowall. Holland keeps the action moving at a frantic, fun pace--and this is easily the best mix of laughs and horror ever put on celluloid. Forget "Scary Movie" and "Scary Movie II," ad nauseum. This is the real deal! And the DVD is flawless, a beautiful print! Ya know? I think I want to watch it, again!

5-0 out of 5 stars the best horror movie
this is no doubt the best horror during the eighties. i watch quite a lot of horror movies due to the fact that they are my favourite kind of movie. Although i watch horror movies they never seem to scare me but "fright night" has been the 1 and onli that has scared me. It is a brilliant film to watch. Hope u have the same pleasure as i did

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleeper cult classic
As of this writing, there are over 105 reviews, and easily more than half of them have given this film five stars. That says a lot about this completely enjoyable, suspenseful nugget of mind candy. Roddy McDowell turns a splendid tongue-in-cheek performance as a horror movie t.v. emcee who is way beyond his prime, and is now enlisted by a couple of teens to fight real a vampire. Chris Sarandon as the vampire, Jerry, does a terrific job as a super-smug bloodsucker.

Much of the plot is nothing new: teens discover mayhem; adults don't believe teens; teens begin to endure in-fighting; the mayhem grows more menacing; teenage girl falls victim to mayhem; unlikely courage and heroes emerge to save the girl and the town. But that doesn't matter. The true strength of this film is its ability to draw from these conventions and make it turn and twist on themselves. And the humor that's drawn out keeps the pace lively while setting you up for more horror. This same formula worked for another relatively unknown film, "Return of the Living Dead."

FRIGHT NIGHT will guarantee you a fun night! Give it a view!

5-0 out of 5 stars Popcorn never tasted so good
Anyone settling in for the night with some snacks and a couple of friends would not fail to enjoy this movie. It is a gruesome, slightly campy horror romp that hardly gets anything wrong. It's a great deal of fun.
Charlie is a normal teen; all he wants out of life is to get some nooky from his girlfriend and maybe pass his trigonometry test, too. But Charlie has a new neighbor who likes to drain the blood out of prostitutes, and he can't just sit by without doing something about it. Yes, he discovers the guy next door is a vampire, and of course no one believes him.
The cast is perfect. The wonderful, underrated Chris Sarandon plays the dapper vampire, whose name (Jerry!) isn't all that scary, but he still manages to serve up plenty of menace. Charlie is capably played by William Ragsdale. Reluctantly assisting Charlie in his crusade are Amanda Bierce ("Married...with Children") as his whiny girlfriend, Stephen Geoffreys as his goofball buddy Ed, and Roddy McDowell as a has-been TV horror flick host who talks the talk but is too cowardly to walk the walk. Geoffreys in particular is priceless. He is easily the most entertaining character in the movie, especially after he encounters Jerry in an alley late one night (in a haunting, surprisingly sympathetic scene). When the "vampire hunters" finally make their stand at Jerry's house, all hell breaks loose.
Gore galore, laughs and scares... All I can say is, have fun! ...

If you enjoyed Friends and Lovers, you'll like this one. ... Read more
