First of all, for those who say that Brando's English accent is bad, I have but one question to ask: where the heck is GABLE'S accent?? I think Kevin Costner deserves an apology. And so does Brando. His Fletcher Christian was, at least before the mutiny, a foppish and aristocratic snob, no doubt. But a cheesy performance this was not. How else is a foppish, aristocratic snob supposed to act like? I admit that I'm not sure if that's how the character was originally written for the script or if this was something that Brando came up with during filming. I also confess that I'm no expert when it comes to British accents. But in any case I thought he was completely convincing and definitely more English-like than Gable's all-American interpretation of the same role. But the true realism of Brando's character goes far beyond his attempt at an accent. After the mutiny, the troubling thought of never being able to return to England without the possibility of facing execution causes his Fletcher Christian to regret taking command of the ship, and for a while he shuts himself off from the rest of the crew, trying his best to convince himself that he did the proper and civilized thing. Gable's Fletcher, on the other hand, seems pretty content with his new life as an outlaw.

Crandall sinks into despair when he sees this wreck and this crew, but ensign Tommy Hanson (Ricky Nelson, as guileless and polite as Elvis) follows him like a puppy and sings the praises of ship & crew. Crandall's task is to pass trough the Great Barrier Reef and bring the ship to Port Moresby. General MacArthur in person devised this operation. Hanson butters Crandall up and sings a song (what did you expect?) and next morning the new-fledged and morning-afterish commander is more tractable. The crew is anxious to make a good impression - what does it matter if the lifeboat is not watertight, the engine not functioning and the Coral Sea gale-lashed? The Allies want Lt. Foster (Richard Anderson) to take the ship over. He observes, half appalled, half gloatingly, how the ECHO gets caught in a mine-area and insists on firing the crew. But Crandall is not willing to give up his command. When Port Moresby is attacked he steers for the Salomon Islands to localize the Japanese convoy. The passage is dangerous (storm, reefs, tidal waves) but they manage to escape a bomber group by dressing up as island beauties. They reach the Salomon Islands, fight their way through the jungle and witness atrocities. They discover the convoy but the ECHO and their commander fall into enemy hands. A Japanese major threatens the POW's with "questioning" and runs a sword through Crandall's breast. But the "inefficient" crew surpass themselves and transmit the position of the convoy: prelude to the little-known but decisive battle of the Bismark Sea. Ostensibly a true story, the film is typical for the early Kennedy era. During the election campaign the public had an appetite for the president's war time adventures which were also filmed (PT 109) with Lemmon's old rival Cliff Robertson (he married Lemmon's first wife and made the first version of DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES) as JFK. The purpose of those films was to raise patriotic feelings by representing WWII as "boy's own adventure": a motley crew grows together under the moral leadership of stout captain Jack who makes naval heroes out of them in just three days. Lemmon cannot have been too enthusiastic to make this film right after THE APARTMENT, but, to his credit, his performance does not suffer. He is lissome like a cat when he swarms up a mast and most of the film is cheerful and hearty. The scene in the mine-area, however, is nerve-racking and the combat scenes brutal. The production values are higher than you might expect. Not a terribly important film but if it's a rainy afternoon and you have nothing better to do...

The plot is typical: Elvis falls for two women (that's certainly been done before), and gets into some sort of conflict. This time it's trying to save his girlfriend from her Uncle Gerald, who is after her inheritance. OK, the plot isn't much, but Elvis looks good in some of the outfits he wears in this picture. The songs are not much either, especially the horrid rendition of "Old MacDonald". The best songs are "Long Legged Girl" and "City By Night". At least this is a picture in which I didn't cringe. The dialogue isn't quite as corny as some of the other pictures, and it doesn't get too boring either. A marginal "thumbs up" from me. ... Read more

Though not quite on the level of director Fred Zinnemann's best work (like "High Noon", "A Man for all Seasons", and "Day of the Jackal"), it still has his masterful touch, and is a fine film, well worth viewing.
The Sundowners clearly shows how love fits in with the Aussie's love of freedom and adventure. Hard work doesn't take anything away from their sense of humor. The land is unforgiving with its fires and droughts; and the hardships created by traveling from shed to shed are mittigated by good kinship. They love gambling and would take bets on whether or not the sun will rise the next morning if they have enough "spirits" in them. All nicely demonstrated in the movie. Their accents believeable and the music in the background is a treat!
Everytime I see this film, the temptation to join the Carmodys is irresistible. This is not a sentimental story, but the film has a genuine warmth and exuberance as well as a young boy on the point of making his own life, working out the path he wishes to follow. There is great love and deep affection shared by the Carmody family, a bond which is one of the few fixed points in their wandering life. This love is not saccherine romance but realistic emotion; it is not always easy, it does not prevent anger, exasperation and pain, but at the end of things their family genuinely cares for each other. Sundowners is a film full of sunlight.

Amazon.com This is a solid, workmanlike World War II picture that, having been made in 1953 rather than 1943, can acknowledge a degree of eccentric humanity and soldierly professionalism in the enemy. Featured guest star James Mason reprises his Rommel from The Desert Fox (1951)--playing all his scenes in German except for a scene of ironical repartee with Burton.Another distinguished Brit, Robert Newton, gets costar billing as a boozy, self-confessed coward who used to be Burton's schoolmaster once upon a time. However, a goodly number of Australians--including Chips Rafferty and Charles "Bud" Tingwell (still going strong nearly 50 years later in Paul Cox's wonderful Innocence)--rate at least as much screen time.Robert Wise directed, with a trimness that reminds us he started out as an editor, and the pungent black-and-white cinematography is by Lucien Ballard. --Richard T. It sounds very exciting. Should this be a "Classic" WWI movie? Unless it receives more attention, it will remain a secret pearl of Australia. "They were the men of Australia and New Zealand-the ANZACS-the mad bushmen-the men from Down Under." My husband, who is a gifted historian, knows of these legendary soldiers, but he had never heard of this movie either. We would both like to see it! I would like to thank firehouse444 for bringing it to my attention in his/her list 'So you'd like to... Find the true gems of Australian cinema !!'. Thanks. ... Read more
