1-0 out of 5 stars Banal
This hurts. This REALLY hurts. The film is so bad it's funny. It bastardizes classic Tom & Jerry humor, and has more in common with Tiny Toons than the original films. Worst of all, this hideous movie made them TALK. Avoid this thing at all costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Tom And Jerry Like You've Never Seen Them Before.
This is great movie. I saw it when I was about 7 years old. I'm 14 now and I still love it. Even giving Tom and Jerry voices didn't hurt the film. I highly recomend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the real Tom & Jerry
Not only has Turner ruined movies by colorizing them, they have ruined Tom and Jerry by giving them voices! In this newly made cartoon, all we learn is that they have nothing interesting to say. Stick with the classic Tom & Jerry's and forget about this.

2-0 out of 5 stars I can't stand this! But my kid loves it!!
My husband and I bought this video because we mistakenly thought it was going to be a "cartoon", like the majority of the other Sing-Along videos. We were really disappointed when we played it for our 1 yr old for the first time- just a bunch of dogs running around to music. LOL My daughter is nearly 15 months old now, and today when the movie ended, she started crying! So we had to rewind it and play it again. Apparently seeing real live dogs is amazing to her. She's completely mesmirized! I rate the video low for my own reasons.. but I'm sure my daughter would give it a 5. LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!
My 2 year old son LOVES this video. He watches it nearly everyday and prefers it over his old favorites, Barney and The Wiggles. He loves watching the dogs and their antics and he also likes to dance along with the children. This is a cute video and definitely worth buying for the young dog lover in your household.

1-0 out of 5 stars Glad its gone
This video is quite different from the other sing along song videos because it does not have on screen lyrics,i had it at one time and now its gone and i'm glad because it was boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney's Sing Along Songs: 101 Dalmatians - Pongo & Perdita
My girls love this video as well as all the Disney Sing Alongs (we own ALL of them). They tend to prefer these with the actual characters and kids (beach party, disneyland fun, campout, circus 101 dalmations) than the cartoons - but still love them all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wore out the first, had to buy another
My daughter has loved this tape since she was 18 months old. Now almost five, she only watches it once a month or so, but in the old days we used to watch it 2-3 times a day. Needless to say, we wore out one copy and had to buy another.

Unfortunately, the other Disney Sing Along Songs videos are not nearly in this tape's league. ...But this one is just a bunch of dogs and kids having a party, singing songs, and having fun. Very well done. ... Read more

Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is setin an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and blackschool uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching youngFairuza Balk.Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized GrandWizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over theschool. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less thanstate-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--mostbizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weirdmusic video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day. 5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Tim Curry
Okay, so the special effects aren't George Lucas material and the songs are a little cheesy. But you can't dispute the acting. Charlotte Rae (sans Tootie from Facts of Life), Tim Curry (Rocky Horror, anyone?) and Fairuza Balk(taking the first steps down the witchcraft genre). Makes me reminiscent of Halloween in the 80's...don't you remember watching this as you got ready for trick or treating? Your brother dressing up as Van Halen, your sister dressing up in a store bought Punky Brewster costume. Buy the movie, get out your candy corn, and get the costume you always wanted but your mom wouldn't let ya (admit it.. you wanted to be Gene Simmon's from KISS but your mom thought the tongue would "scare your sister") It's good fun and great Halloween pick me up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Childhood Favorite
Based on the books by Jill Murphy "The Worst Witch" follows a well misunderstood witch Mildred Hubble and her accounts at Ms. Cackles Insitute for Witches. This stars Fairuza Balk when she was a young actress, also stars Tim Curry as the Grand Wizard and other familiar actors/actresses. For those who think it will make your child become a witch, it most certainly won't, but maybe have an understanding of them :) this is a cute little fantasy in which most of us at Mildreds age feel misunderstood and have a hard time growing up, and being picked on by the most popular students etc. It's full of fun, and Halloween takes a big part in this as well. This was originally aired on HBO, in which I remember as a child. I found the VHS copy one day at Amazon and had to order it. Its fun to remember, and to show it to others who are small. If your child loves the Harry Potter books they will probably love The Worst Witch movie, series, and books. Even though I haven't watched Harry Potter the Worst Witch reminds me of it just the same. Just from a girls perspective. The old movie and books have also re-created a cute and beloved TV Show on HBO Family. It's definately worth the buy :)

4-0 out of 5 stars finally out to dvd
the worst witch dvd is a great addition to any collection. the movie stars fairuza balk in her second film, as well as many other favorites such as diana rigg and tim curry. this movie has been long out of print and now with it's dvd release many harry potter fans will enjoy this film. the only downfall to this dvd would have to be no special features which is why it loses a star. altogether a great movie and a joy to have on dvd. loved it as a child and will enjoy it with dvd quality picture now that my vhs is quite run down.

4-0 out of 5 stars An then there is Diana Rigg . .
Yes, I know -- old special effects (Have you been on the older rides at Disneyland lately? Do you still love them as much as you did when you were a kid? Then who cares that they're not "state of the art"!) This is a really sweet coming of age movie with some really comfortable acting. I had never seen Diana Rigg in such a nasty part before (she's done a lot since then) but I bought into the whole thing! Never mind that it's not Return of the King or even the original Star Wars, if you love comfort and fun, you'll love this movie -- and the actors in it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this movie
Okay, so it's not the best movie in the whole world. Some of the special effects are cheesy and some of the songs are cheesy, but it's a cute movie. I watched it every year as a child and fell in love with it. I had to own it and now I do! I look forward to showing this movie to my daughter when she gets older, it's a piece of my childhood to share with her. That makes it more than worth it for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best T.V. comedy of the early Sixties; very smart!
Car 54, Where are you? is an extremely clever, absolutely hilarious sitcom about the misadventures of the officers in a mythical precinct in the Bronx circa 1961.

Vaudeville style humor and intelligent writing are the trademarks of this series.

Fred (Herman Munster) Gwynne, and Joe E. Ross are the stars. Their contrasting personalities and intellects are the central point of the humor.

The first episodes, (Vol. 1) are about the funniest videos this fan has ever seen. The staccato silliness, and the absurd situations make for great 25 minute viewing.

Currently, Amazon carries Vol. 1 - 6. It would be a real treat to find the subsequent seasons which added Al Lewis (Granpa Munster), and Larry Storch of "F Troop" fame. Lewis as one of the officers, and Storch as the town drunk.

All in all, one could do a lot worse for $8.99. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie, one of Ms. Stapleton finest roles
I just saw this movie last night for the first time and I absolutely loved it. I bought the DVD because it seemed like a very good movie with a terrific cast and I couldn't agree more. Maureen Stapleton is excellent in this film and she plays Bea Asher, the recently widowed wife with great warmth and sincerity. She even sings in this movie and she does it very well I think. She is also a wonderful dancer who makes ballroom dancing very interesting to watch and learn. Charles Durning is also great in this fantastic movie and they both have great chemistry together. QUEEN OF THE STARDUST BALLROOM, is a magical film and the acting of both Stapleton and Durning is superb. I couldn't help feeling a little sad in the end (I won't tell you so I won't spoil the movie for you). However this is a wonderful movie and it shows that you're never too old to fall in love and follow your heart. They certainly don't make movies like this anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful love story
I loved this movie. I was able to relate to Bea and what she was going through and dancing is so much fun. She is a very strong woman even though her children think she isn't able to run her own life. Children have a lot to learn when it comes to their widow mother. And it is a wonderful movie. Jean Stapleton is wonderful in it. After her husband has been gone for over a year
she desided to stop being a plain looking woman & colors her gray hair and starts to wear makeup which she never did before.
And Charles During was wonderful as her dance partner & friend. Very enjoyable movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Al teaches Bea to dance at the Stardust Ballroom
A lovely story about rediscovering love. Bea Asher (Maureen Stapleton) is suddenly widowed and finds her comfortablelife shattered. She thinks that the only thing that lies ahead of her is a future of living alone. Then she Al Green (Charles Durning), a mailman, who introduces her to the Stardust Ballroom. It is a marvelous understatement to say that Al teaches Bea how to dance. "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom" offers an exceptional script by John Kass while Stapleton and Durning have never been finer in this 1975 film directed by Sam O'Steen. Even if the songs are too old for your taste and you could never seen yourself ballroom dancing, you will certainly respond to the emotions at play in this sentimental tear-jerker.

3-0 out of 5 stars Queen of the stardust ballroom
Underated sleeper. For the middleaged and family. Charming and heartwarming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice film to see in family
I bought this film thinking it would be a concert of the rock band queen, of course it wasn't. When I saw it I got very into the story. It is a very intriguing film to enjoy with all the family, buy it you wont regret it. ... Read more

The Age of Aquarius is brought to life by the filmmaker who made Amadeus a household word. Milos Forman directed this version of James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Galt MacDermot's landmark musical in 1979 between his Oscar-winning films One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus. With mixed reviews (Gene Siskel named it that year's best film) and lukewarm box-office grosses, the film all but disappeared from the collective consciousness. Yet the film beautifully delivers on its promise to bring the '60s back to life. Hair re-creates a colorful world of counterculture finding an anvil to pound on: the Vietnam War. Forman and his design team allow the film to wash over you, starting at the free-flowing opening in which masses of hippies, police, and even their horses eagerly groove to the familiar beat of "Aquarius." In the best work of his career, Treat Williams makes his leading- man debutas Berger, the leader of the Central Park troop who takes draftee Claude (John Savage) under his wing on his trip through New York City and the apex of what the '60s was. The new recording of the music is quite fine, with Chicago band member Don Dacus's rendition of the title song a highlight. As Berger's pièce de résistance number says, "I've Got Life"; so does the film, right down to its poignant declaration to "let the sunshine in." --Doug Thomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Score, Amazing Choreography
"Hair" boasts one of the most beautiful scores in Broadway history. While the film changes the plot, it keeps most of the songs and even adds some stunning dance numbers.

Set in the 60's, filmed in the late 70's, the film shows its age. Still the amazing score shines. Some of the best numbers include:

*the still popular "Age of Aquarius" and "Let the Sun Shine" both of which became anthems for an era.
*the haunting "Easy to Be Hard," sung by Cheryl Barnes with cutaways of a little boy that will break your heart
*"Good Morning Starshine" sung primarily by Beverly D'Angelo (the Mom in Chevy Chase's Vacation Movies!)
*"Hair" the title song performed by one of the lead singers of the band Chicago

Twyla Tharp, pre her major fame, choreographed much of the movie. It shows.

As for the plot, well it's thin and it has been changed from the play. An Oklahoma boy wanders into Central Park, a few days before he is to ship off to boot camp for Vietnam. He befriends some "hippies," led by Berger "Treat Williams" and falls in love with Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo), a debutante who ride her horse through Central Park. It's all an excuse for the songs-HOWEVER, the final scenes-including one of hundreds of soldiers marching into a plane heading to Vietanm-turn darker and are far more thought provoking.
I would recommend this movie to those individuals who crave 60's entertainment in any form. Also-if you enjoyed "Moulin Rouge," you probably will like this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hair: Revisiting the Age of Aquarius...
Ever since it opened off-Broadway in 1967, the Tribal Love Rock Musical "Hair" has been spreading it's message of love, harmony, understanding, and mystisism everywhere. It's catchy and well written music brought musical theatre into the new decades. Still, today, there continues to be a following throughout the world for this musical.

This film was directed by Milos Formann, who is famous for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus." This film was made in 1979, a decade after the musical's debut. The music was influenced greatly by the 1970's pop funk and disco entanglements. (The original musical was a more rock-based sound, which unfortunatly is not captured in this film's revival of the score.) Starring here, is Treat Williams as Berger, John Savage as Claude, and even Nell Carter, who is in the ensemble.

Every time I watch this, I have to cringe at the plot structure of this film. It leaves behind the organized chaos of the original musical, and turns it into something that they thought would be "exceptable" to the movie-going audience. Indeed, the cast getting undressing completly, and showing drug-induced hallucinations, are barely filmable, but the script of this is ridiculous at best. We turn Claude into an Oklahoma enlistee, and Berger into a hippee, who gets sent off to war in his plce. Sheila is no longer a protestor but a rich school girl. What many people have found strange about this film is that the script incorperates touches from the musical, that make no sense on film. As a reason to put nudity into this film, the writers added a skinny dipping scene. An in place f the drug-hallucinations, Claude has a bizarre envisionment of he and Sheila getting married, in a confusing and irevalent dance sequence. (When you see the movie, you will see what I mean.)

The portrayals are excellent, however. John Savage is an interesting Claude, but his singing throughout the film was a bit confused. Treat Williams is literally, a treat (sorry for the pun), when it comes to his amazing voice during the songs "Donna" and his solos in "Let the Sunshine In." His acting was just as good, but one admits to wishing that he had better material to work with. Beverly D'Angelo is a sweet Sheila, and her rendition of "Good Morning Starshine" is very cute. I would have liked to see her perform the part, as it was written in the musical. She would have had a much better chance of getting noticed as a wonderful actress.

The music is, of coarse, excellent. The score is still unmatch when it comes to rock-musicals. The lyrics echo the spirit of the time period, and the music mirrors the rebelious personality of the people of the era. The only qualm I have is that this movie makes Hair seem a bit outdated. The entire score has been redone to fit a disco-flavour mood, that does not capture the poignancy of the original.

Overall, this is a film to be watch on moderation. Watch it on a Friday afternoon before leaving to a night out. It isn't the type of thing you will want to see over and over, but it leaves an impression on you. Most people will enjoy it as a film - not as a valid representation of the musical. I hope that you watch it in that light. Otherwise, you will find yourself a bit disapointed at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars hair
the most underrated musical of our time. Anyone who loves great music will love this movie. A powerful score keeps the movies heart thumping throughout, definetly worth the wait to see on dvd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ready for another generation
We showed this movie to our young daughters last night. Prompted by a growing sense of anti-war feelings we're experiencing with the daily reports of growing death tolls in Iraq, we felt it was appropriate. They were rapt. I think it was primarily the music and Twyla Tharp's choreography; however, the girls asked a lot of questions, and I think it gave them a little better understanding of what many teenagers felt during the Viet Nam War.

The movie version of this story is a worthy effort, made great by Milos Forman. The quality is not as I remembered it back when I saw it in the movie theater in 1980. And while our expectations of quality may have changed, our expectations of a good, entertaining film have not. Hair has grown into another generation of viewers who can appreciate it on many levels. It's worth another look.

3-0 out of 5 stars it was a good effort
This is a prime example of a great director, Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus) making a film that doesn't quite pull together. It's a good effort though. Start with one of the great musicals of all time, Hair. It is one of those that needed to be put on film (like the more recent Chicago). But in this case it didn't quite transfer successfully to film. One problem I think was casting Treat Williams as Berger. The acting was a little off. The dialogue was a little off. And the musical numbers didn't quite mesh in with the film (like they do in Grease, Chicago, or Moulin Rouge). I applaud the effort by Forman, if not the finished project. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one
I have always thought you should art by does it work or not. This works, the play is just heartbreaking, the performances all top notch, not overplayed. And I do love Glynnis O'Connor, (somebody bring back Sons and Daughters). This is so powerful I could almost not stand to see the end of it, reminds me of the end of Searching for Private Ryan. If you liked this try The Bridge Over the San Louis Rey which is just as good (not the movie, the book). I remember seeing this version of Our Town when it first came out and liking it. I read some reviews that say the lack of props bother some people, but those same people said they had trouble following the plot. I did not having any problem at all following the play, it would have hurt less if I had. Wonderful stuff. Please bring this out on DVD and drop the price so people can afford to buy it. Still worth the money though, every penny. Best thing I have seen in the last year with MAYBE the exception of City of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Return of the Prodigal
We had this movie on Beta. The homespun quality of the characters - HH and all of the fine cast - warms your soul. Used to seeing the play performed on step ladders, this production does not destroy the minimalism - the sets in this film version are tasteful and add a touch that I believe TW would have approved of. Now we have the movie on VHS - Return of the Prodigal indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the price to drop BUT......
Moving, simple, elegant...these are the words that occur to me regarding this version of Our Town, a play which, in this video, LOOKS like a play, which makes it all the more effective. Movies are good at some things; other things, like human relationships, somehow seem more real on stage. The acting is superb, the direction unobtrusive and natural, the work itself one of those rare moments caught by an artist. Rent it, buy the laser disc, wait for it to drop in price, but see it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Town
Although this is the most expensive of the Our Town videos, it seems to be the ONLY one available that is staged as a play rather than a movie. There is no scenery and there are few props and set pieces--just as Wilder meant it to be. I find this version to be the most effective for teaching students and the most interesting to watch as an individual viewer.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Version of Our Town is a Great Pick!
Thornton Wilder's classic dramatic play comes to life on screen in this well-cast 1977 stage production. The acting is rich and the characters well-developed, and both are accented by the simple yet homey nature of the sets and backdrops. Those who have already met George and Emily in the pages of Wilder's book will be extremely pleased with this version, and those who have yet to discover Our Town will find themselves immediately intimate with the world of Grover's Corners. ... Dustin Hoffman gives an amazing early performance in this drama about the "superfluous" man. Hoffman plays Zoditch, a reader in a publishing house, who has a humiliating job, a squalid apartment, and grandiose fantasies. He is assigned to read the diary of a dead man, whose story begins to weave with Zoditch’s own life. The play makes good use of double casting, as Zoditch imagines people from his own life as characters in the diary. Though a few of the performances in this adapted play still feel stagy, the production is visually playful--at one point a hand winding an elegant pocket watch cross-fades into a hand churning a meat grinder. The play’s message is satisfyingly complex; though Zoditch is routinely humiliated, he is far from blameless in the matter. This is a fascinating play, at once about the way people and events intertwine as well as the failure to connect. --Ali Davis ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Muldoon's Star": One Of The Funniest TV Episodes Ever!
"Muldoon's Star" could be the funniest TV episode ever. A brilliant spoof of Marylin Monroe it features some dialouge and scenes that are beyond hysterical including 2 scenes involving Fred Gynne and a milk bottle. Also listen for the pair of nice old ladies near the beginning who totally dead pan say: Lady 1:"Wasnt that Gunther Toody ripping the dress off a beautiful blonde?" Lady 2: "Yes I believe that was Gunther Toody ripping the dress off a beautiful blonde." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful world
During the Golden Age Of Television, there were many wonderful dramas that were not afraid to showcase ethnicity. Dramas such as "The Tenth Man", and"The World Of Shalom Aleichem" showed universal truths. Here you can see a preview of Zero Mostel in his environment, long before his emmy winning "Fiddler On The Roof." Here, Jack Gilford performs his wonderful pantomine soon to be used for Cracker Jack commercials. The three stories show the depth of Aleichem's humor; the wise foolishness of Chelm; the sarcastic tale of the meek inheriting the earth, and the poignant tale of quotas in education which existed in the 1950's and 1960's. Besides, I had a chance in high school to play "Bontche Schweig", and seeing the master at work is a dream come true.

Don't miss out on this one. ...

I applaud the effort by Forman, if not the finished project. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Offbeat and quirky
Back in the 70's Joan Rivers used to be a very funny stand up comedian. She wrote and directed this movie, starring an
barely known Billy Crystal. If you like humor that is off beat,
different, original and are into the 70's you should enjoy
this movie. It makes you use your BRAIN, which is a nice
change of pace too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Billy Crystal's First and Worst Movie!
This is Billy Crystal's first movie. I saw the movie on some cable movie channel when I was a teenager and it is without a doubt one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only thing good that came out of it was Billy Crystal who despite being in an awful movie you could really see that this guy had talent but this is definitely his worst movie! Some people who like this movie will probably say the movie is so bad it's good but I think it's just bad. OK, I do admit to liking some cheesy movies that were hated by the professional critics and were boxoffice flops but this just isn't one of the ones that I personally liked!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Billy Crystal Classic!!
Rabbit Test is an overlooked Billy Crystal Classic. It's a must see especially for Crystal fans!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Billy Crystal's First Movie!!
Hi there, I can't believe I am the first one to write a review for the 1977 film debut of my favourite actor, Billy Crystal. First off, this movie is about a man[Crystal]who becomes the first pregnant male in world history! And you all thought Junior with Arnold Schwarzenneger was original! Anyways, the film follows his story up to the birth, in a very funny scene-it takes place in a manger, much like the birth of Christ.
The film is directed by the most annoying person ever to walk the earth, Joan Rivers. I hate it when she does the Oscar red carpet show, so I consider myself brave to watch a movie directed by her. If thats not bad enough, she even took up half the front cover with Billy Crystal and his big stomach!
Throughout the film, she gradually puts in more things making fun of Religion-I won't get into details, but you will most likely be offended, as I was. Since this was 1977, the film only got a PG rating-by todays standards, I wouldn't be suprised if this got an R rating-sexual content, and a mature story line.
Anyways, the only reason I bought this movie was because of Billy Crystal-I am a collector of his films, so I had to have his debut. I had to get this off of eBay, due to the fact it's long out of production.
The film also features Doris Roberts as Billy's nagging, yet concerned mother-a taste of things to come for her down the road on TV's Everybody Loves Raymond.
This isn't a bad movie-but I wouldn't say it's that good either. I imagine this would only appeal to Billy Crystal fanatics, like myself, or Joan Rivers fanatics, which I doubt there are any.
So enjoy this look back to the place where Billy Crystal's genious humour was born.
If you aren't sure which Crystal film[s]to check out first, if you're a new fan, I highly reccomend City Slickers and Analyze This, which contains some of Billy's funniest scenes of all time.
Thanks, and enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The only good Dortmunder movie
Of the several film versions of Donald E. Westlake's "Dortmunder" novels, this is easily the best. Not perfect, but it has very good acting and the story stays fairly close to the original book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timless Heist Pic for all ages
Okay, I rate movies by what they are aiming to do; THE HOT ROCK aims to entertain, make you smile, and infuse a sense of camaraderie while rooting for crooks. With that in mind, I would think that only Cyclops OD'd on Visine would rate this less than all the stars on a clear summer night

I've watched this film app. eight times, even showed it to my urban HS basketball team I coach a few years ago, and they loved it.

Without revealing any plot lines, this classic rhymer remains with me to this day: Afghanistan banastand. The most famous password since the Marx Bros fiddled around with "swordfish."

Just go get this and then wonder how you never seen or heard of it before.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Favorite!!
The Hot Rock is a favorite movie of mine that brings back warm memories of my childhood. I loved this movie especially the scene when Dortmunder confronts Murch about not knowing how to fly the helicopter and Murch starts flipping switches, gets it started and takes off. My brothers and I used Murch's line "flip this here, hit this one, this one and this one, then double it over, hit your battery, then your starter and come on baby, come baby--Ha-ha-ha!" all the time when growing up and building cars. It is a classic film set in NYC that all will enjoy and one that goes down as my all time favorite.

My mother (A big Robert Redford fan) would always let me know when it was coming on TV so I could watch it again and again. She said I reminded here of Murch as I could fix or drive anything mechanical and get any engine to start. She recently brought me the DVD for my 40th birthday and I watch it at least once a month.

Redford and his enjoyable cast are funny and very entertaining. It's a great heist film and one that makes you want them to get away with the jewel.

Other great scenes in the film I liked: When "Chicken" pretended to throw Greenberg down the elevator shaft and Abe gets busted for lying about the stone, and when Redford coolly strolls into the back on his last attempt at the diamond. There is also some great close up shots of the World Trade Center while it was under construction. You can actually see thru the building on a fly by.

In a day when many movies are packed with violence and harsh language, this film will bring all whom watch it back to a time when great films were made that could stand on their own without brutality and curse words every other line.

This movie is a classic and I would recommend it to all viewers. I would also love to see (and be involved in any way possible) a remake of this film set here in New Orleans!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars this came first
I watched this movie with my dad, and within about fifteen seconds, I said, "wow, this feels just like Ocean's Eleven." and he said, "really? I was going to say Out of Sight," not realizing that both were directed by the same guy. So if you want to see what was almost certainly one of SS's inspirations, check this out. It's a riot. It would be hard to go wrong with William Goldman writing and Robert Redford starring, but then you add in Zero Mostel and it's just out-of-control funny. An excellent heist flick. ... Read more

Woody Allen's second film as a director was a wild, unpredictable, and unlikely comedy about a product-tester named Fielding Mellish (Allen), who can't quite connect with the woman of his dreams (Louise Lasser, Allen's ex-wife). He accidentally winds up in South America as a freedom fighter for a guerrilla leader who looks like Castro. Once he assumes power, the new dictator quickly goes insane--which leaves Fielding in charge to negotiate with the U.S. The film is chockfull of wonderfully bizarre gags, such as the dreams Fielding recounts to his shrink about dueling crucified messiahs, vying for a parking place near Wall Street. Look for an unknown Sylvester Stallone in a tiny role--but watch this film for Allen's surprisingly physical (and always verbally dexterous) humor. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet
This is the ultimate film for people who say Woody Allen plays the same role every film. I noted some Marx Brothers homages-you wonder why it's called Bananas? Well, it's a nod to the Marx Brothers' Cocoanuts, there first actual film (the Marx Brothers films' titles didn't make sense, either (at least for Paramount)). There is also a harp solo, which Harpo Marx commonly did. Although not as funny as Annie Hall, Bananas has some great moments-especially when he buys food for an entire army and "plays dead" against the car. The infamous finale is good, too. All in all, worth renting. Thank you for taking the time to read my review and feel free to leave me a helpful/not helpful feedback. God Bless America!

4-0 out of 5 stars Marx Brothers Inspired, Woody Silliness at its best.
The mixing of bad puns, intellectual comedy, satire, farce and slapstick isn't seamless, but it sure is funny. Most of the jokes are as funny or as bad as they were 30 years ago. Some of the jokes have turned out to be prophetic.

I had not seen the film in nearly 20 years yet remembered it well as I watched the recently released DVD. It's still very funny stuff. The pacing of course is a little slower than how it might be done today--but not much.

I wonder if people under 25 will understand how funny the scenes with Howard Cosell are? Will they know how outrageous and even daring this material was 30 years ago? I'm not sure.

Some of the references and therefore the jokes might fall flat if you don't have a knowledge of late 60's/early 70's American pop culture and news events.

Early in the film Allen who plays a product tester, is testing an executive exercise device, paying homage to Chaplin's Modern Times, and it seems like the scene could have been out of the Farelly brothers latest comedy.

There are several one-liners like one about how common it is to attack an American Embassy which were fairly innocent and funny in 1971, 8 years before Tehran, but are more double edged when heard today.

The film is an homage to his favorite film comedians, the Marx Brothers. The title; Bananas a nod to the Marx Brothers Coconuts, the plot loosely inspired in spirit by Duck Soup and there's even a gag involving a harp, a tribute to Harpo.

We have very witty comments about the media, the very funny (and before it's time) New Testament Cigarette Ad, Allen's first dream sequence involving two groups of monks carrying two men on crosses (one being Allen, one being Allen Garfield) who wind up in fisticuffs over a parking place.

There's the wonderful scene where Allen desperate for some companionship tries to impress a female signature gatherer (played by Louise Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Lasser --his then wife) by pretending to be interested in Yoga, and attending various protests. This leads to Allen unwillingly joining a real revolution in a small South American Country, impersonating it's president to ask the American Government for money and... well don't ask... it actually almost makes sense which is part of what makes it all the more funny.

There's also Howard Cosell and AbC world wide Sports coverage of the assasination and later the wedding night, and for all of us who grew up on the East Coast, newscaster Roger Grimsby playing himself. The wonderful goofy musical score by Marvin Hamlish is just right too.

The DVD has a great transfer of a beautiful wide-screen print but no extras. Although the DVD didn't include the original brilliant radio ad for the film, it does have the wonderful original theatrical trailer for the film which is almost as good. It's one of my favorite trailers.

Chris Jarmick, Author (The Glass Cocoon with Serena F. Holder-a steamy cyber- thriller ...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is so bad, it's good.

Allen humor is like few others...he has a unique way to make people laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Must Suck Out The Poison
This is classic Woody Allen from the early years. Allen's earlier films were satiiric masterpieces with a generous helping of slapstick thrown in and this is one of the better ones. There are so many funny scenes but when Allen is kidnapped by the rebels in a fictional latin country and wakes up in their camp the results are hilarious. His training includes the "Suck out the poison " line in the event of snakebite, Each of these tough rebels is asked to repeat..."What do you do ?" Response.. Suck Out the Poison..then Wood responds " I never suck the leg of anybody who I'm not engaged to"
The dinner at the Dictators mansion is equally hysterical....Allen shows up with a bakery box full of patries and El Presidente turns up his nose and says." Prunes...I don't like Prunes."
Just a sample of countless funny and memorable lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars SCREWBALL ANTIWAR SATIRE..
From the outrageous name "Fielding Mellish" to the screwball humor in this MAD-magazine type antiwar satire, this is one for the Best of Woody pile. The film grabs you from the first gag, and never lets go. It is laugh-out-loud hillarious with whacky situational scenes as a simple NYC boy gets embroiled in a rebellion in a small South American country (the rebels did not have a good tailor though, but couldn't wait). I was surprised to see a very young pre-fame Sylvester Stallone in a minor side role as a subway crook. The denouement of the movie is somewhat of a let-down (it may be me) but that's no reason to miss out on this superb comedy. ... Read more
