2-0 out of 5 stars Lame with one or two decent gags
This is a pretty lame comedy, though it contains a few moments of freshly outrageous humor, such as a guy going door-to-door selling "nuclear vacume cleaners," one of which he explodes as we see newsreel footage of a mushroom cloud. The plot, such as it is, involves a young, eighties-coiffed Paul Reiser and a group of other misfits getting summer jobs after college. Most of these involve outlandish, disgusting weirdoes as bosses, and the boys soon get fed up and start their own moving company. All the while Reiser tries to get back with his old girlfriend, which he could accomplish in two seconds if he ever just sat down and talked to her but instead it somehow takes a whole movie to happen. The movie is loosely narrated by the guys as they look back in retrospect, though this device is merely a means for them to forcedly transition between the rather jumpy scenes. Too much of the film's humor relies of things being merely bizarre rather than actually funny, and the characters are stock misfits who aren't especially likeable. Good for a rainy afternoon, but that's about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated comedy...RELEASE IT ON DVD!!!
This video came out in theatres in January 1985, but only made it to video in 1999...and is YET to be released on DVD. This situation needs to be fixed and SOON!

On to the review. First, the cast list...a very young Paul Reiser, Robert Townshend, Julianne Phillips, Rick Overton, Richard Dean Anderson (McGyver!), Scott McGinnis and Paul Provenza. A great collection of comics and actors that seem to keep popping up in TV/Movies pretty frequently.

The movie is about a group of college buddies and what they're going to do over the summer, namely work. They start out as waiters, caddies, nuclear vacuum cleaner salesman, and movers. Of course, all of these fall apart and Max (Reiser) decides to start his own business...Maximum Moving ("Max...M-A-X...that's me..."). Max learns a little about life and moving from Wylie (Leo Burmeister), who decides that Max is a "tutti-frutti" name and states, "From now on, your name is CHUCK". Max hits the road with Wylie while working for Cabrizzi Bros moving, a company who doubles as a car theft ring. Once Max and his buddies go into business for themselves and steal some of the Cabrizzi's business, things get destroyed in short order.

The story is okay. The scenes along the way are hilarious. Some of the highlights:

--Woody isn't called Woody because of the toothpick

--Bryon lives with Dwight (Townshend) and decides he wants to fit in by talking about his parents "serious crib", grits that are actually Rice Crispies "snap crackle and pop rockin in my bowl...they spinnin on their heads". Then dons an afro wig at the dinner table.

--Dwight and Bryon work as caddies and insist an extremely elderly man who whiffs on a tee shot and throws his club through several car windows "...really has his sh** together"

--Roy visits a backwoods redneck family to sell them the Monty 2000, a nuclear vacumm cleaner. This is easily the funniest scene from the movie, a classic!

--Any scene with Wylie trying to "make Max a man!"

--Any moving scene with that "Body by Jake" guy...one in particular where he's moving a desk and pushing Max along with it..."heeeeeey, you're a pretty strong guy...you lift weights?"

Those are the highlights that I can recall off the top of my head after watching this movie dozens of times. This is one that you and your friends will revisit over and over...many of my college buddies still call each other "Chuck" because of this movie.

One more time. PUT THE DAMN THING OUT ON DVD ALREADY!

3-0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack Is Great!!
This is one of my favorite b-comedy movies from the 80's, but really sticks with me about this movie is the soundtrack, particularly the closing song which I can't figure out who proformed it. It's a classic 80's jam! Anyone know where I can find out?!

3-0 out of 5 stars Goofball comedy with one stellar scene.
This is comedy ranking right up there with the Police Academy movies (picture tongue in cheek). Although most of the movie is truly terrible, there is one scene (selling atomic-powered vacuum cleaners) which is so funny my friends and I rewound and reviewed it several times in a row and were laughing so hard we couldn't speak! An absolutely PERFECT scene!! I'm purchasing the video because I think that scene is worth the price of the tape. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good fun
This movie is good fun. The actors are great: Emily Lloyd, Peter Falk and Adrian Pasdar. It's Peter Falk's typical role and if you like him in it, you'll like him here. Emily should have had more movies because she is great - and finally Adrian Pasdar gets a real chance in a movie. Good entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute versin of the mafia
A great sunday afternoon fun story.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute story about daughter-father relationship
This is a really cute story about the relationship between a father (Peter Falk) who is a mobster just released from prison who meets his daughter for the first time. It's a comedy with some foreseeable events but it's the performances that are fun to watch. Falk is terrific. Weist is lovingly hilarious as the "oversexed" mistress and mother of the daughter. Brenda Vacarro is wonderfully funny in a campy role as the wife. But Adrian Pasdar as the daughter's love interest and "young sidekick, mobster wannabe" is usually the perfect foil for the rest of the other outrageous, campy roles. Pasdar charmingly steals the scenes. Even though he is often the "straight man" in this comedy, he manages to play the comedic parts very well and is as funny as the more seasoned actors. Though dated (the daughter is a "Madonna wannabe") it is a truly fun ride. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Fits The Movie Perfectly!
Eric Clapton's music fit the film scenes for Homeboy perfectly! The film is dark and moody, yet ends with hope - just like Clapton's particular compositions for certain key scenes. Rent the film and you'll fall in love with this CD even more so!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thinking Man's Boxing Film
I would rank "Homeboy" along with "Body & Soul" (starring John Garfield),"Rocky" (the first one), "Raging Bull" and "Peniteniary" as one of the best boxing films ever made. A very moody, dark film that is well acted and directed. Mickey Rourke is at the top of his game in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent soundtrack from Clapton and Kamen.
This is a great CD! This collection of themes from the Mickey Rourke film "Homeboy" has no Clapton vocals, but some of his best film music work, in my opinion. The "Ruby" themes are beautiful acoustic guitar work and then Clapton and bassist Nathan East do an electric "Dixie" that is reminiscent of the famous Jimi Hendrix "Star Spangled Banner"... A definite "must have" for those who appreciate Clapton's work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Feel Good Movie !!!
This movie is by far my husbands favorite movie! He has watched it numerous times. I can't get him away from the TV set when it is on. I really wish they would put this movie on DVD because it rightly deserves to be there. It is a great movie. It has everything a movie needs action, drama, excitement and any other words I could think of other than GREAT !!! Maybe someday they will put it on DVD and we will get a clearer picture. I definately would buy it in a heartbeat! Once you watch it you will have to watch it over and over and over again. It is a great movie!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching
I have four brothers and this movie does a great job showing a "brother's love". If you are synical and like to pick everything apart you probably won't think much of this movie but if you have a heart and like feel good movies, you'll love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Memories.
This movie is the most memorable movie in my existance. In 1985 this played on HBO shortly after its release and it has a special meaning in my life. I was 17 at the time. My girlfriend Debbie and I had a joke that everytime we turned on the TV, "Turk 182" would be on... and it was! It's a great movie, with the same passion of "Taps". Rent or buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars just for the name
think about it, maybe blink 182 got their name from this movie. If it was called turk 185, they might of called the band blink 185. Certainly not the same. God bless this movie for getting made. Im deffintly looking forward to viewing it in the future.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a great little film
If you're a fan of Tim Hutton.. then you already have this in your collection.. This is a great little film, with a predictable storyline, but the characters draw you in, simply because of the talented actors that bring this this quirky little tale of brotherly love to life... and its worth the price simply for Kim Catrall ...
