All of that nonsense aside, there are several scenes which are truly spectacular, some of the best special effects that I've seen. True, a great deal of those scenes were shown in the previews, but there are still many staggering effects that are saved for the film. Yes it's melodramatic. Yes it's preachy (Al Gore and Al Franken actually used this movie to promote their environment agenda). But if you would enjoy seeing LA destroyed by what would be the largest tornado in recorded history, or New York getting swallowed by a wall of water, it's worth the price of the movie ticket. And here's another idea - go with some friends and keep notes of the best (i.e. worst) lines, and then afterwards you can argue about which was the worst line of dialogue. Mine was probably, "Jake...tell her how you feel," with "I think I will go close my eyes for a while," coming in at a close second. One final note to the dude at Amazon who filters these reviews: Here's a little inside tip - *stop posting reviews written by people who haven't even seen the film - and even ADMIT this in their reviews!* And certainly don't make them the spotlight review. Maybe you could have a special "trailer review forum" for these idiots and stop wasting our time.
Yeah, the movie is about the epic struggle to survive in the face of an overwhelming natural catastrophe, but it's pretty obvious that the producers were less interested in telling a story and more concerned about sending an election-year political message. From the early scenes of the movie, the "hero" character (a very forgettable paleoclimatologist played by Dennis Quaid) serves as the "voice crying in the wilderness" against the environmentally unsound excesses of corporate America. He warns of the doomsday scenario which does in fact unfold throughout the movie, but the heavily stereotyped conservative politicians (who are, no doubt, in the pockets of the polluters) shrug off his warnings. Maybe it's just me, but I thought the "vice president" character looked uncannily like Dick Cheney. Coincidence? I don't think so, but feel free to decide for yourself. The main story is about a dysfunctional family whose members find themselves separated by the unpredictable (yet somehow predicted) chain of natural events. Of course, the events aren't really natural -- they're caused by foolish and greedy men who fail to pay attention to the needs of Mother Earth. Somehow, against incredible odds, the family manages to reunite, save the human race, and resolve their own domestic issues all at the same time. And of course, the tale is duly concluded with the humiliation of America and its (implied Republican) leaders, as well as some cheap jabs at American immigration policy. In short, this is enviro-hysteria at its cheesy best, but election year political propaganda at its worst. There isn't even a mild attempt to veil the message -- it's right there in your face. If you're a Bush-hater, you'll cheer. If you're a little more honest with yourself, you'll see this film for the cheap trash that it is. The ONLY reason I gave it a second star was because it was chock full of stunning visual effects from beginning to end. Beyond that, your enjoyment of this movie will stand in direct relation to your political affiliation. That's no way to make a movie. ... Read more

Julia Roberts does a believable job as a woman who has found out that her husband has screwed around on her. What I liked most about this movie was allll of the secondary characters... Kyra was the PERFECT Older sister looking out for her younger one, Gena was Great as the Southern Belle Mama, the Aunt (don't know this woman's name)was HILARIOUS as the "little" crazy Aunt that would/could go there. You really have to pay attention to this movie there are so many innuendos and funny moments that I truly can recommend this one. The actress that played the daughter was wonderful and last but not least Dennis Quaid did quite a convincing job as a contrite husband (once he was caught). If you want something along this plot line I would also suggest "Hope Floats" which also stars Gena Rowlands and has pretty much the same subject matter but not the same movie. Enjoy. Respectfully Reviewed
Her relationship with her father is unclear---why is she so angry? And if he makes her so crazy, then why work with him then? Some cute moments, sure... the food poisoning, the doctor and the father fighting... but otherwise... yawn Could have been a contender... but it's not

Summary: The Rookie is an instant baseball classic and a great G-rated movie that is truly enjoyable for the entire family. The story line is well developed, the script well written, the film well made, and the DVD supports a wonderfully great Director's Commentary by John Lee Hancock and Dennis Quaid. This commentary gives good insight into the Jim Morris story, how it was brought to the big screen as well as interesting personal insights into both Hancock and Quaid and their personal inspiration from Jim Morris as they made this film. I cannot recommend this DVD enough! Story: Jim Morris is areal life baseball lover whose prime and purpose came long after his retirement! On a dare, he takes a shot at the "show" and gets drafted to the major league where he had a short, but successful pitching career. Jim proves that nothing comes easy, and we don't necessarily know what our "purpose" is in life, until it comes upon us. Sometimes a child's wide-eyed dream can propel his father to greatness! G-Rating: Nothing was cut or manipulated to make this rating. The story is wholesome and immensely entertaining!
Much to his surprise and chagrin, the high school team he coaches goes on to take it all, and the thirty something Jim is forced to come to terms with his pledge. He does so, trying out for a major leagues baseball team, and finds himself living a dream come true. How can he not, with a fast ball clocking at 98 miles per hour? Dennis Quaid, with his shy, boyish charm and ingratiating toothy grin, is terrific in the role of Jim Morris. Rachel Griffiths is excellent as his down to earth, supportive wife. The rest of the cast also give very good performances. With its G rating, this film is suitable for all ages. It is an enjoyable, feel good, message movie. The DVD has a number of excellent bonus features, in additional to the usual deleted scenes segment. Baseball buffs and those who play the game will certainly enjoy the feature "Spring Training: Tips From the Pros". I especially enjoyed the featurette "The Inspirational Story of Jim Morris", in which Jim Morris himself tells in his own words the incredible journey that led to the realization of his dream.
I was aware of Jim Morris when I read his story a week after what happens to be the end of the movie. It was an intriguing story, a man who is challenged by his High School baseball team in a small town to go after something he hoped for after he suggested they give their all for the game they played. It is a great story of a small town, small team, young man who is wandering. You learn a lot about Jim Morris and his life and you sense his desire to want to play again. The story will make you laugh, cry and cheer. This is a great movie for families and groups to watch. I have this as part of my library and will cherish the story of 'The Rookie.'
On the negative side, it was a bit long and the other weakness is that it did not always convey Jimmy Morris' love of baseball when he undertakes his unlikely quest to the major leagues. While the movie shows his ambivalence in missing his family as he begins his second shot at the majors, it doesn't capture the positive aspect of a man chasing his dream quite enough. Still, it was a nice movie that I have seen a bunch of times. ... Read more

Amazon.com Director Jim McBride (Great Balls of Fire) was in top form with this 1987 sizzler. You may not remember the particulars of the plot, which concerns supposed gang killings and police corruption, because it is the romance that has staying power. Blame this on Quaid and Barkin, who send off enough sparks to light up Bourbon Street. They are not only sexy together, but endearing, which makes you want to like them as much as they like each other. --Rochelle O'Gorman Reviews (18)

The movie was diabolically clever, a script of 16 words and a simple wardrobe inticed some young actors who over time have proven to be smart. Well ok, Shelley left Cheers way early, but she's still seems smart other than that. Ringo is an outcast Caveman, bullied by the bigger Cave people who joins with other outcasts to form a new tribe. Overtime they survive and overcome, somewhat predictably, the bullies, but it's really fun ride to a predictable ending. In the ice age scene look for Night Court baliff Richard "Bull" Moll as the ice monster. He deserves an award for that one.
It tells the story of our 'ancestors' - the very first people and how they discovered food, fire, weapons etc. It goes back to the stone and ice age and it gives us the laughters no other comedy did. Ringo Starr's and Dennis Quaid's performance is stunning. A must see movie! Don't underestimate just because it's old!
The movie, which stars Ringo Starr, is about the cave "underdogs" banding together to give each other the proverbial bone. As outcasts, they may lack the strength of the more formidable cavemen, but they do have brains. Or so the movie would make you think... Seeing the movie now, I disliked a few inappropriate scenes depicting something along the lines of drugging a woman in order to molest her. 12 years ago, I didn't understand scenes like that. This may be a comedy flick, and it may not have nudity etc, but it is definitely not for minors. The gags are also mediocre, reduced to bodily functions and sheer idiocy. Much of it reminds me of watching old Monkee reruns. Rent it for nostalgia, but I don't recommend buying it unless you own the video and it is worn out with so much use. ... Read more

Mike Brodie, played by Dennis Quaid, works at Sea World and his brother, Sean comes over to visit, and that's when the fun happens, sort of. first, a baby great white is caputured and placed in captivity. the park immmediately gains fame as being the only park to hold a live great white shark in captivity, but the fame quickly dies out as the baby shark dies. then, Momma comes to town. the shark for jaws 3 is the biggest in the series. huge monster shark that swallows people whole. what really killed Jaws 3 to me, was the cheap special effects at the end, when the shark attacks the main control center of the under sea kingdom. the shark never moves, and the effect is that of a cheap B movie. i realize that this effect is probably better appreciated in 3-D, but watching it in 2-d is just flat out horrible. the ending also suits the special 3-d version, where the 2 jaws explode in front of the camera. i like Jaws 3 for the simple fact that Jaws is Jaws, but it had so much more to offer.
Especially this terrible movie should have included 3-D!
To maintain some relationship with the first two films, this sequel centers on Mike and Sean Brody, the sons of Sheriff Martin Brody. Mike is an engineer working at Sea World and he's just helped build the park's latest venue: a series of underwater tunnels that allow tourists to get closer to the marine life. But the Brody boys hard luck around water soon catches up with them when a baby Great White and its 35-foot mother get into the park via lagoon. The baby is caught and put on display but it soon dies and its mother (which, initially, nobody knows is around) begins to wreak havoc on the park. "Jaws 3-D" is a cheaply made film to be sure. And it certainly isn't worthy of Steve Spielberg's original classic. One thing that really stuck out for me in this sequel was that, unlike the first two movies, it wasn't well acted. That's lame considering the good cast, which includes Dennis Quaid, Louis Gossett Jr., and Lea Thompson. The characters were underdeveloped and uninteresting too, which made the human side of things even worse. Joe Alves' didn't help matters with his shoddy direction either. Much of film seemed to lack focus and the scares, which were so powerful in the first movie, were cheap(though they were probably more effective in the 3-D format, which is no longer there on the video). From what I can see, the biggest complaint people have with this film is the special effects, and I can partially see why. The blue screen techniques are pathetic, but the shark, which is sorely hated by a lot of viewers, isn't totally bad; it actually LOOKS decent. The problem is it's as stiff as a two-by-four when it moves (not to mention that it roars and swims backward). "Jaws 3-D" stands as a cheesy movie in the end. Given it's sub-par acting, direction, and effects, the only people who are going to really like it are fans of B-movies and diehard "Jaws" freaks. See this if you like but don't be surprised if you're shaking your head when it's all over.

Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) is a fading screen queen, determined to jump-start her languishing career. Her mother (Shirley MacLaine) is a wisecracking old barb, and knows just how fast Hollywood can chew you up and spit you out. With a talented supporting cast including Dennis Quaid and Rob Reiner, POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE offers a new, warts-and-all perspective on Hollywood and the "dream factory". The DVD also includes audio commentary by writer Carrie Fisher, talent profiles and original theatrical trailer.

But having an affinity for things Italian or for bike racing is not necessary in order to enjoy this 25-year-old classic. What is necessary is an appreciation for small things and memories about the mysterious period between adolescence and adulthood. If that describes you, then chances are you'll enjoy this touching film. Amid the praise I should say that the DVD package is only average: the original trailer and teaser are there, but it would have been nice to have some commentary from director Peter Yates, some of the actors, or from critics who were fans of the film. A "Making of Breaking Away" mini feature would have also been a welcome addition. One note: Breaking Away is a very American film, and so I'm not so sure how much of it will hit home with foreign viewers.
The main character is irrepressible Dave Stohler (Dennis Christopher) who decides that he wants to be an Italian international bicycle racing star, even though he has never been out of his home town and doesn't happen to be Italian. He pours himself into the role of becoming Italian and becoming a star-quality cyclist. His loving parents are bewildered and worry if their son will ever be normal. He doesn't want to be normal; he wants to be outstanding. This movie does a wonderful job of blending comedy, character development, and action. After watching it, you feel like you were there and you knew these people. I was inspired by this film to look for other Dennis Christopher movies (e.g., "California Dreaming") but none even approached this one. "Breaking Away", with the multiple meanings to its title, is one of the most likable movies I've ever seen. A great pick-me-up if you're down in the dumps.
Mike (Dennis Quaid), the leader of the group, clings to his friends as reminders of his days as high school quarterback and fears they will prove to be his best. Moocher is eager for adulthood and is planning to marry his girlfriend. The only problem is he cannot keep a job! Cyril (Daniel Stern) is resigned to the fact he may never leave Bloomington, but remains buoyant regardless. Dave Stohler is the main character, he knows exactly what he wants to be, an Italian Cyclist. There is only one problem- he isn't Italian! Dave learns through a young woman he meets and eventually through his father that simply being Dave is more than good enough, and that he must embrace his natural talents and the future. There have been countless "coming of age" pictures, but this one is the most enjoyable! DVD: The production values of the DVD leave something to be desired and therefore I only give the product 4 stars. The lack of 5.1 surround is a disappointment, as well as the quality of the video. A commentary track featuring the four leads would have been an interesting addition. The only extras are a couple of trailers.

Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. are fantastic in this film! Quaid as the human astronaut is great, and gives a real sense of his loathing for the Drac species. His character's growth and change in attitude is very well done and a believable performance. Gossett is also remarkable as the Drac, and his portrayal of an asexual creature so different (and yet similar) to us is nothing short of extraordinary. He also grows, learning to love the human Quaid as a friend/brother and giving him the ultimate gift: his child. The special effects may not be Academy-material, but they do the job well for this film. While this is science fiction, the story is what makes this film so great. I don't know if it would work in any other setting/genre, but it certainly works here. If you haven't seen this, watch it!
"Enemy Mine" is a good movie in just about every way. The special effects, landscapes, and aliens are great. Quaid and Gossett Jr. also do a good job of acting. The movie drastically changes when one of them has a baby. If you like sci-fi movies, "Enemy Mine" would be a good movie to get. My only complaint is that it didn't have much action in it like many other classic sci-fi movies, but it's still a good movie.
