As he proved with The Black Stallion, Never Cry Wolf, and Fly Away Home, director Carroll Ballard has a gift for creating exhilarating movie experiences. And although Wind received only mixed reviews when released in 1992, it's a technically astonishing film that does for yacht racing what The Black Stallion did for horse racing--it puts you right into the action with breathtaking camerawork and gripping excitement. Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey star as experienced sailors determined to win the prestigious America's Cup yacht race. Their love for each other is put to the test when she's removed from the crew and joins up with a maverick designer (Stellan Skarsgård) whose new boat design represents the cutting edge of sailing competition. Eventually Modine leaves his millionaire sponsor (Cliff Robertson) and reunites with Grey, and their race against the Australian World's Cup champion leads to a thrilling climax on the high sea. Cinematographer John Toll (who later won back-to-back Oscars for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart) takes his cameras where no sailing movie had ever gone before, and the results are nothing less than spectacular. --Jeff Shannon ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CW Thompson
The best sailing movie I've ever seen. The action sequences were thrilling and makes you feel like part of the race. I've been waiting for the DVD release for some time now, we've almost worn out our VHS copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adrenaline rush on the water.......
To start out with, like other reviewers have stated, it is terrific to see this movie out on DVD after so long. I realized, when I watched this movie for the first time, you don't have to be a fan of boat racing to love this movie.

The cinematography just can't be beat with absolutely wonderful shots putting you dead center in the action. It's a great experience in how the filmmakers shoot you back and forth onto the boats and then create sweeping panoramic views of strategic boat maneuvers. Top notch sailboat racing, bar none.

The DVD is remastered in high definition and is crystal clear with superb detail and color. As for sound, Dolby 5.1 or DTS would have been the icing on the cake but I won't sell this DVD short. The Dolby Surround it does have still gets the job done just fine and sounds excellent.

You can't go wrong with Wind and I recommend this movie to anyone who likes great racing and sporting competition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even the hard-core AC snobs and fanatics will admit --
...that they secretly love this movie. Despite its cheesy, Hollywood take on the America's Cup and its retelling of Dennis Conner's adventures 'on-the-other-side-of-the-pizza' this movie is not only beautiful eye-candy but more importantly it is exactly what they say in the movie: its good, clean fun.

If you're trying to get friends and family intersted in taking a sail, this is one of the best tools to get the blood following -- yup, there are a lot of yachts, but there is the scene with the 14s. Enough excitement to dispell the idea of sailing as a laid-back sport.

For the AC die-hards, its a chance to see the 12-meters in action once again, to hear the legendary PJ Montgomery comment on the races and read the tech/advisory credits which reads like a AC who's who list. So it isn't "real" or even possible (the 'whumper' is what kills it for some) but after all, you're looking at a movie. Enjoy it for what it is and appreciate the fact that this movie is the product of a love of sailing!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have in your DVD collection!
I got my DVD version from Amazon yesterday (3/13/03), a replacement for my battered VHS tape. I've noticed some scenes in the movie trailer that were not in the movie, and I don't know why they were excluded from it.

The digital enhanced video is overwhelmingly better than the VHS, but I wish the digital cameras were available back when they filmed this movie. The digital audio really puts you in the middle of the actions.

One regret, I wish I had seen this movie in the theater when it came out.

I can't wait to go sailing in a laser this summer...

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 of the 10 best Sports Event Movies EVER... On DVD AT LAST!
It's been more then a decade since this sleeper cult hit was in the theaters and an equally long period of time that this film was only available on VHS and Laserdisc.

Now, at long last, the wait is over!

Wind appeals for a number of reasons.

Primarily its a very human story of ambition, competition, love, loss, and redemption. What makes the film work is fantastic photography/camerawork by Mata Yamamoto, a soaring/pumping soundtrack by Basil Poledouris, and a compelling drama played out by some very brainy characters played by some very good actors.

Think of it as "The Cutting Edge" and "Strictly Ballroom" with a little more testosterone and in a sailboat!

The DVD is pretty bare-bones, but a Digital Widescreen Hi-Definition Remastering and Dolby surround make up for it. A Special Edition would have been nice, but, considering how long we had to pray for this one it's hardly required. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jason lives; what else is new?
"Friday the 13th, Part VI - Jason Lives" is one of the better sequels, it certainly belongs beside Part 2. Shortly after the events in Part 5, Tommy Jarvis and a friend go to dug up Jason's corps and cremate it. But lightning striked the body and gives it life again. So Jason goes on a new murder spree as Tommy tries to convince the local sheriff to help stop Jason. While it's not high art, it really isn't bad either, not even close. There is a subtle bit of humor underlining the movie that kept things light; maybe lighter than they should be in a horror movie. Tom Mcloughlin dose a pretty good job as the tormented man with the Cassandra complex. Jason is now not so much a retarted psychopath anymore as he's more of a zombie this time out. The kills are bloody, but I have a feeling there was a little more that the evil MPAA had cut out. (The MPAA probably did more cutting than Jason did.) So, will you enjoy the movie? If your a slasher fan, then yes. If your an average movie goer, maybe, maybe not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
This impressive entry in the popular horror series brings back the relentless killer Jason Voorhees, this time as a supernatural zombie. Tommy Jarvis, now played by Thom Matthews, accidentally resurrects Jason when he impales the killer's corpse with a metal pole during a lightning-storm. Numerous murders follow, beginning with Tommy's friend (Ron Palillo) having his heart torn out of his chest by the zombie killer. Implicated in the crimes by a mean-spirited sheriff (David Kagen), Tommy is freed from jail by the sheriff's daughter, spunky Megan (Jennifer Cooke). The cast converges on Camp Crystal Lake, which has been renamed "Camp Forest Green" by superstitious locals, in time for Tommy to send Jason back to the bottom of the lake, if only temporarily. Harry Manfredini's score is among his best, and the makeup by Martin Becker, Gabe Bartalos, R. Chris Biggs and others is outstanding. Cooke makes an appealing heroine as Megan, although Mathews' Tommy has lost the interesting mental disturbances of previous entries and becomes just another bland hero. Tom McLoughlin's direction is effective, and the film has a memorably funny supporting turn by Bob Larkin as a grumpy drunken caretaker. Alice Cooper sings the title song, "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)". Although no classic, this is a solid horror film with a witty script and engaging characters.

3-0 out of 5 stars 'Friday the 13th' enters the self-satire zone...
Uh-oh-- looks like the 'Friday the 13th' franchise decided to take a more comedic turn here, more than likely in response to the darkly humorous mayhem of 'Friday's' greatest rival pop-horror phenomenon, the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' series. From the James Bond tribute in the opening credits to the Frankenstein-like reanimation of our fave slasher to the characters spouting some of the hokiest lines I've ever heard uttered in a 'Friday' flick so far, there was no way I was gonna take this load o' celluloid silliness seriously. Especially after our fave psycho's encounter with a group of paintballers. 'Course, I'd pretty much given up on taking any of 'em seriously after Part 2... but this I really Really REALLY can't take seriously! Ya know?

Adding to the cheese factor were the usual array of Jason-kills, many of which were ridiculously over-the-top and just plain unbelievable, I didn't really find 'em all that scary. Somewhat gruesome at times, but nothing all that frightful. Oh yeah, let's not forget the usual staples of Jason takin' out a buncha teenage camp counselors (including a few who invoke the 'Friday' franchise laws of Sex=Death and Pot=Death), And an ending that suggests that, in spite of his apparent 'death', out beloved psycho goalie ain't quite through yet (surprise, surprise)...

All in all, I found this go-round fairly fun to watch for the silly dialogue and overdone Jason shenanigans. So long as it's not taken seriously, it's a more than passable piece of entertainment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better than you'd think...(** 1/2 stars...).
I skipped part 5 and went right to this one after hearing good things. "Jason Lives" is actually pretty good for a "Friday the 13th" sequel. It's "bulky", meaning that thier was substance to it, and not just kill, kill, kill from begining to end. The "main girl", traditional to slasher pics, was more interesting than most in other movies of this sort. And we actually get to see kids at the camp this time; If you recall, in parts 1 and 2 we only get to see people preparing for kids to go to the camp. And it didn't seem to fly right by like others in the series did. Reccomended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME MOVIE

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!
An amazing amalgam of actors in their prime and a tight, well-balanced script makes for one of the best action movies ever. Lorenzo Lamas stars as "Soldier:" a head-case, former Special Forces cop who lives by his own rules. When his world crumbles around him, Soldier retreats to the only law he knows: his own. The action scenes are amazing, and the plot keeps you guessing from minute to minute. Filmed in the spectacular Canadian Eastern Wilderness, "SNAKEEATER" or "SNAKE-EATER" is a wonderful romp through the underbelly of human emotion and desire. Is there any greater commitment than love? Also not to be missed for the sake of hearing the beautiful and haunting title theme: "Soldier." "Soldier...where's your sister...." Another highlight is one of the Big Screen's greatest villains: The Dentist. Truly gorgeous. A hell of a lot better than "Kill Bill 2."

3-0 out of 5 stars What the Heck Happened to Soldier?
Snakeeater 2, a.k.a. "Snake Eater 2" varies wildly from the original Snakeeater movie that allowed Lorenzo Lamas to step out of the giant shadow cast by his father, the late, great Fernando (insert Abba joke here). Lamas is back as Soldier, with a LAST NAME this time, so now he's called Soldier Kelly. Seems Soldier is so gosh-darned crazy and in-your face (again) to his wimpy cop bosses (this was filmed in Canada, remember) that he ends up with the choice of either jail-time or an insane asylum for his ways. CAN'T YOU JUST ACCEPT HIM FOR WHO HE IS??? Anyway, Soldier ends up at the local nut-house, populated by some colorful characters who all just happen to be bad actors. Horshack from "Welcome Back..." makes a return appearance. Also, there's a Jim Baker televangelist clone in there. So, Soldier keeps breaking out to do his version of justice: rigging cowardly traps, killing people in cold blood, blowing up bathroom stalls, etc. AND this time he has a cool, urban sidekick named Speedboat (Larry B. Scott); a dude that looks like he got lost on the way to a Bell, Biv, DeVoe concert and ended up in this movie. Oh, that Speedboat, what with his witty lines and all. Anyway, this movie is nowhere near as violent as the first and there's no nudity, so if you are hoping to see Speedboat's hot sister starkers, forget it. There are two reasons to see this: 1.) the afore-mentioned wheelchair fight on the roof of the nut-house and 2.) the way they kill the drug-runners...OK, and 3.) Speedboat's sister. That's about it. Harmless and somewhat fun drivel; great for watching at 3am while loaded.

1-0 out of 5 stars Speedboat?! Why is he named SPEEDBOAT?!
On the back of the DVD...

"Soldier Kelly's not your ordinary cop. He's a shortfused, high-powered ex-commando who's not above breaking the law to bring a criminal down. Lorenzo Lamas returns as Soldier Kelly, the SnakeEater, back to battle a deadly ring of drug kingpins who are killing young kids with poisoned drugs!"

By the way, if you're looking for plot development, there is none. They give only marginally decent explanations as to how they know the locations of where the drug lord lives, where the crackhouses are, etc.We never find out why Speedboat is called Speedboat... and we're always left wondering how it is that the two main protagonists end up shirtless in a room, muscles glistening as beads of sweat emphasize the labour they're putting into pouring crack into a ventilation shaft for 5 minutes in the movie.
I'm still a little stupified as to the wheelchair duel that takes place on the rooftop of an insane asylum... And beyond all else, why anyone would want to preserve this film on DVD.
I thought it was hysterically funny in the sense that this is such an awful film. If you like sitting and making fun of 80's flicks, or if you have a cardboard cut-out of Lorenzo Lamas in your room that you lather in vaseline every day to make yourself feel more like him, then this is the movie for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comedy, Action, Romance, what more could you ask for??!?!
Great Movie that is must for any true comedy fan. I'm still unsure if they are trying to make it funny or it's unintentional; we may never know. The actors aren't great, the action pretty much is fake, the plot blows, but all in all I'd say pick it up for a rainy day and you won't regret it. ... Read more
