5-0 out of 5 stars A real favorite for kids
This very charming update of a classic has its own special appeal to kids and adults. I heard of one four year old that watches it every day. You have to see it to see why it is so special. It's a classic among classics.

1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible version of a wonderful story
Because the many different versions of the book are all lovely, I assumed the vidoe would be great for my three year old as well. Wrong. The video is of terrible quality, the action is ridiculously slow, and the "real" bunnies look like the worst of commercial cartoon rabbits anywhere. You actually feel sorry for the velveteen rabbit, because he turned from a lovely toy bunny into an ugly, tacky real one. This was so bad that I sent it back.

3-0 out of 5 stars To be enjoyed by all children and their parents.
My daughter introduced me to THE VELVETEEN RABBIT when she was five and we read it together until she knew it by heart. I was reluctant at first to view the filmed version of the story; too many of my favorite books had been badly adapted to the screen, their plot telescoped to accommodate intrusive songs and music and irrelevant characters. However, this animated version of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT has managed to keep the emotional content and magic of the original story. The graphics are predictable and rather trivial except for the RABBIT himself who is very appealing. END ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've always remembered it
When I was young, my neighbor would always watch this video and I also loved to watch it. Being young, I never happened to ask what the title of the movie was. About 10 years later, one day in school the memory of that movie popped into my mind for some reason. I was determined to find out what the name of the movie was. I asked all my friends at school but they had no idea what I was talking about. Finally, one of my friends helped me find out what the name was and now I finally know the name of one of my favorite childhood movies. This movie is a great movie for a little young girl with dreams to watch. And maybe, like this movie did for me, she will have memories of for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite
I used to watch this movie in amazement as a little child. And I still do to this day! The movie is absolutely beautiful, the characters are warm (think carebears meets my little pony), and the songs are brilliant. I can't imagine raising a child without them seeing this movie! I highly recommend buying a copy of it, in excellent condition, you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MEMORABLE CHILDHOOD VIDEO
THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE VIDEOS TO RENT WHEN I WAS A CHILD. I LOVED MARIE OSMONDS VOICE. SHE WAS THE PERFECT PICK FOR THIS CHARACTER. I WANT MY DAUGHTER TO KNOW THIS STORY AND SEE THIS GREAT CARTOON FILLED WITH GREAT CHARACTERS AND WONDERFUL SONGS. I CAN'T BELIEVE I EVEN FOUND THIS MOVIE. I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR IT FOR YEARS. I'M GLAD YOU'VE MADE IT AVAILABLE FOR THOSE OF US WHO CAN REMEBER WHAT A GOOD ANIMATED MOVIE REALLY IS. ... Read more

IT"S a great movie about THE OSMONDS every OSMOND fan should have it I sure too

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Watched it many times. A movie the whole family can enjoy! Marie did a great job. Hope there's a sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish the movie were longer
I loved this movie from start to finish. I just wish it were at least a half an hour longer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lessons for children
The story of the Osmond Family and their rise to fame in the 1960's. Good lessons for performing children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good with Dramatic License
I saw this when it aired on TV. As always in these types of things, dramatic license was taken, in this case with appearances (Marie's character never got fat, and Timothy Bottoms's character never went bald as did the real Mr and Mrs Osmond). But if you want a behind the scenes video look on the Osmonds and how they got their start, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Inspired by O. Henry's short story about a young bride and groom, each of whom foolishly--but quite lovingly--sacrifices a treasured possession to buy the perfect Christmas gift for their mate. Amid a flurry of bustling New Yorkers clad in early-20th-century garb, O. Henry himself (David Wayne) sets the scene: Beth, a teenage orphan (Marie Osmond), comes to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle (the latter played by Donald Moffat). Her friendship with a cheerful kitchen maid soon leads to a stormy encounter with a handsome Swiss immigrant, Rudy (Timothy Bottoms). Despite Beth and Rudy's conflicting social statuses, and Beth's arranged engagement to a sickly bird watcher (a young James Woods, who truly fits the bill), the two fall in love and miraculously overcome these obstacles--all in about 95 minutes. Old-fashioned romance, elegant costumes, and a happy ending make this predictable story completely irresistible to those who love a good fairy tale--or to Osmond fans who fondly remember watching the movie on TV in 1978. Produced by the Osmond Brothers for PBS's American Short Story series. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie
My brothers and sisters and I watched this movie over and over around christmas time. We loved it. It is a great movie with good values and a heart warming ending. It is a tv made movie based on the old charming story about the girl who cuts her hair to buy the man she loves a watch chain. While at the same time, he sells his watch to buy clips for her hair. It is old and so is the quality generally but worth it if you are interested in adding a wonderful family movie to your christmas collection that is sure to be a favorite for years to come! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Marie Osmond Is Wonderful in a Turn of the Century Story
Marie Osmond shot this film just after completing the film "Goin' Coconuts" with brother Donny. This film is based on the short story "Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. Marie plays "Beth" in the film, a rich orphan who is assigned to marriage in turn of the century New York. Beautiful period costumes and superb acting make this movie a Christmas classic! Shot entirely at Osmond Studios in Orem Utah in September-October 1978 for airing in December 1978.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE..MARIE OSMOND IS EXCEPTIONAL
THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE AND I WATCH IT EVERY CHRISTMAS..YOU SHOULD TOO WITH YOUR FAMILY. IT WAS MARIE OSMONDS DRAMATIC DEBUT AND SHE WAS REALLY GOOD..SHAME SHE NEVER MADE MORE MOVIES THAN THE 4 SHE DID..BUY IT YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED

4-0 out of 5 stars This DVD is not closed-captioned despite what the box says..
Even though the box says it is closed-captioned (CC), I could not make captions show up on my computer using various software or on my portable DVD player. I finally came to the conclusion that the company evidently goofed not incorporating the captions in the DVD edition. I sent e-mail to the company that created it and they never replied.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Christmas Romance
I saw this film way back when it first aired and loved it. Both leads are perfectly convincing as a charming couple in love.
I highly recommnend this to anyone looking for a sweet classic romantic film. ... Read more

A squirrel who forgot to store nuts for the winter, a bear toorestless to hibernate, and an evergreen too crooked to be chosen as aChristmas tree form the band of misfits in this animated rehash of a popularChristmas theme (i.e., everyone has value; beauty comes from within). Theanimal pair decide to decorate the gentle tree (cheerfully rendered byvoice-over veteran Debi Derryberry), starting with a nutcracker they find ina trash can. The crotchety nutcracker (voiced with quintessentialcantankerousness by Ed Asner) complains about the tree, but has aSanta-inspired change of heart. While the dialogue can be painful for adults, young children will enjoy the bear's wintertime antics and may find humor inTim Conway's meanderings as the squirrel. Another plus: narrator MarieOsmond's reverential renditions of "O Christmas Tree" sandwich the 47-minutestory. (Ages 2 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs ... Read more

This is a nicely animated musical that's loosely based on the true storyof the composition of "Silent Night" in 1818 by Father Joseph Mohr andChoirmaster Franz Gruber. It's Christmas Eve and mouse-icians Buster andChauncey are on their way to the town of Oberndorf to sing for the Queen. Thewhole town is a flutter with preparations, so imagine BurghermeisterHuffenmeir's distress when the Duke of Raoche and his niece Lady Gretchen arrivea day early. Also newly arrived is Christina, an orphan girl on her way toVienna in hopes of finding her aunt and uncle. When the Oberndorf treasure isfound missing, all clues point to Christina, who steadfastly denies the charge.Father Joseph believes the girl, but it's up to Chauncey and Buster to prove herinnocence and apprehend the real thieves. In the end, the Christmas celebrationwith the Queen is not as lavish as originally planned but proves much moremeaningful. The town discovers that the true meaning of Christmas is not fame orfortune but friendship, sharing, and giving, and they celebrate their new wisdomby singing "Silent Night," a Christmas song composed by Father Joseph and Franzon that tumultuous Christmas Eve. This musical is full of compelling songswritten by such great musical composers as Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, BarryHarman, and Keith Herrmann. Voice talents Phil Hartman, Marie Osmond, and TomArnold add much to an already great production. What a wonderful way tocommunicate the meaning of Christmas. (Ages 3-12) --Tami Horiuchi ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A cute, silly movie starring the world's perfect siblings!
This movie is not a bad movie as it's reputed to be. It's so silly that it makes it funny. Donny is very good in his role(even if he's playing himself), Marie has terrific timing at doing comedy and I love their musical numbers.A nice look at Hawaii. Ted Cassidy from "The Addams Family" and Kenneth Mars did good jobs at playing villains. A great movie to watch in the summertime. Donny's future wife Debra Glenn made a cameo.

5-0 out of 5 stars it was a great movie but it could have been better!
donny and marie were young when thay made this movie im sure if thay had to do it all over again it would have been a little more matuare so for adults it would be a little chezee great for kids but if you have to listen to your manager back then you have no choice but to make movies like this im sure if thay had to do it all over and do it there way .thay would because thay are very talanted but still the movie for the time it was released was a great movie! jimi young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goin' Coco for "Goin' Coconuts"
Someone please tell me why this title isn't available on DVD format???
My children and I loved this movie! A great whacky, adventure,
musical/comedy!
I can still remember the original, classic Donny & Marie show from the '70's. This movie is full of the same humor; so if you want a taste of nostalgia, and want a feel-good movie, with feel-good music, and whacky humor, I strongly recomend "Goin' Coconuts"!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's good
You're not reading this, and you're not considering buying this unless you're already a Donny and Marie fan. It's worth having and it's worth watching. It features Donny and Marie just as you remember them from "The Donny and Marie" show."

Both turn in good acting jobs. Donny is greatly loveable, just like always, and Marie is cute.

The story and dialog, etc, are good and enjoyable. Some of the supporting actors are well known and add to the show.

I wish the movie had more performance, and that's why I only give it 3 stars. You get only three almost full length performances. The movie opens with about a 2 minute song of typical Donny and Marie song and dance material. In the middle you get maybe a 2-3 minute solo performance by Donny on the piano, with cutsey mugging by Marie. At the end you get a great 5-10 minute production number of the Hawaiian war chant, featuring some vigorous, surprising, and very good Donny dancing, Marie doing a kind of juggling trick, Donny singing the lyric in Hawaiian, and Marie hula dancing, all great stuff. You have also heard this song in the "Enchanted Tiki Room" at Disneyland and you've seen Miss Piggy, Animal, Pigs and Penguins perform it on the Muppet Show.

It's worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wretchedly Awful!
A friend of mine gave me "Goin' Coconuts" as a gag gift several years ago. The joke was definitely on me. This film is replete with hammy acting, insipid attempts at humor, and villains so inept it hurts to watch. If you like the singing of Donny & Marie Osmond (I don't), that is about the only saving grace of this mess.

Okay for the "goody two-shoes" crowd, but otherwise a pathetic attempt at entertainment. Now I've gotta go watch some paint dry. ... Read more
