2-0 out of 5 stars Unfunny yet wellmade
When it was released in 1981 based on the standards of the day, this film was judged quite awful.Today when the pinnacle of comedey is an Adam Sandler movie this flick looks like Citizen Kane. A production assistant played by Carrie Fisher must hold reign on a huge cast of midget extras during the filming of the Wizard Of Oz.Chevy Chase plays a G-man assigned to protect a foreign leader from an assasin and Billy Barty plays an evil Gestapo midget searching for a secret map of the U.S.coastel defences who all end up spending a weekend in a run down hotel on the eve of the second world war. Sound interesting? Its not.Lots of lame sight gags and poorly written comedey bits leave the actors (and this film has a very talented cast) looking embarassed to even be on screen. And speaking of embarassing, this film has a scene in which the post Star Wars Carrie Fisher is stripped at sword point by the Nazi dwarf (no,Im not making this stuff up) and spends most of the movie wearing nothing but her bra and underwear.(this being without doubt the highlight of the film) So if you have about 90 minutes to kill, and you want to see a cast of otherwise first rate actors make fools of themselves,or your a Star Wars fan who'll get a thrill out of seeing princess Leia in her undies, give it a try ,its no worse than The Waterboy.

4-0 out of 5 stars The premise alone is worth it...
A vertically challenged German spy is sent to California to meet up with a Japanese spy at the onset of WWII and that's just the set up...

A Japanese tour bus breaks down in front of the very hotel where the Munchkin cast for the Wizard of Oz is staying. Aboslutely brilliant. There's a subplot involving the assasination of a European king who's is protected by a US G-Man, Chevy Chase, who is flirting with the still cute and sexy Carrie Fisher. Plenty to enjoy in this absolutely awful but hysterical film..."The Pearl in is in the River"!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Academy Award Winner....It isn't.....But........
Life is too short. I laughed when I read the review by the person giving this a one star rating. This one has problems (nay, should I say "issues" {new speak}).
Under the Rainbow is the kind of film I love. I don't want to be moved, I don't want to think, and I don't want to solve the world's problems. I only want to know that the "pearl is in the river". It was produced when a movie showing midgets and taller people as a farce was not considered anti-social. It is a scream! And for those of you worrying about what your children will see and hear (comparing it to today's films), it is clean!
The gags are obvious, Chevy Chase is obvious, and once it starts, it is a roller coaster you can yell and scream on and still feel comfortable.
I hear it asked, "why can't THEY make more movies like this?" Just open your eyes folks; Hollywood has been making great funny movies for years (Noises Off, Mouse Hunt, The Seven Chairs ...... etc.). They all don't have to be Disney pablum.
I love this film, and am happy to make it a part of my comedy collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Under The Rainbow-Chevy Chase, Carrie Fisher
Take Chevy Chase as a bumbling G-man, Carrie Fisher as a lovely studio executive, add in a hundred small people starring in a film called "The Wizard Of Oz", a disguise bearing Duke & his half blind Duchess, an assassin, a busload of Japanese photographers, a mini Nazi (played by Billy Barty) & a Japanese spy searching for a map of American defenses and you've got yourself a yellow brick road of fun & mini-mayhem on a grand scale. I mean sure it's not Caddyshack, or Fletch, but Chevy does some great material, and it's great to see Carrie Fisher play absolutely straight to Chase's one liner character. Not many in the cast may be familiar, save for Billy Barty (from FOUL PLAY, also with Chase) and Mako (the japanese spy, who's appeared in a countless amount of movies, even though no one ever remembers his name) and the guy running the hotel during this fiacso looks familiar too. Take 90 minute's out of your life, sit back and enjoy the fun.

Eddie Murphy does keep testing our patience by trying to expand his cinematic horizons. For some reason, he is the only person on the entire planet who can rescue a magically gifted child from the clutches of evil kidnappers. A detective who specializes in locating lost children, he is chosen by a Tibetan princess to lead a rescue mission that will save the world from the clutches of Old Nick.

Murphy was at the height of his career, having enjoyed his first box-office crest when he attempted this more dramatic role. If his career survived the gamble, it certainly was not because of the lackluster script, mediocre production values, or leaden performance of costar Charlotte Lewis. Not that Murphy does much with his role, either. He mugs for the camera and his timing is off in both dramatic and comedic moments. Stick with his earlier triumphs, or explore his subsequent return to confident comedy turns in The Nutty Professor.-- Rochelle O'Gorman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Bald Magical Child
Perhaps the success of GHOSTBUSTERS was the inspiration for THE GOLDEN CHILD to mix comedy and horror fantasy. GHOSTBUSTERS had all the elements in perfect sync and THE GOLDEN CHILD is very uneven. Many of reviewers and moviegoers reaction to the movie was basically, to paraphrase many quotes, "Eddie Murphy was great and funny...but the story and plot was stupid!" It was reported that Eddie Murphy hated the out-of-country location shoots and it shows. His character, Chandler Jarrell is the reluctant hero who is a social worker and part time finder of missing children. Chandler is chosen (by divine providence) to find and save a magical child from kidnappers who are in the league with evil. There is an uncomfortable fantasy-supernatural, dream sequence that makes no sense in the context of the story. Also, in the final leg of the film, the stop-motion animated effects of a bat-winged demon and an actual "dragon lady" seems to be out of place and unexpected. The film takes its subject too seriously with Eddie Murphy winking at the audience. With his character's disbelief of the whole absurdity of the situation, maybe it was a tough sell for the audiences. Overall, a movie that showcases the early brilliance of Eddie Murphy but his comedy does not gel wit the rest of the film.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm
What an odd movie. Its a fantasy children's movie that thinks its a fantasy comedy. Murphy is completely lost at sea in this flick. As if he isn't entirely aware of what's going on or is trying to push the movie in a direction it just won't go in. His character and the movie seem to exist separately of each other. He plays his usual silly harmless likable guy and the rest of the movie is earnest kiddie sci-fi action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy shines
When this movie first came out, from what the critics had to say, and the trailors for it, I was not that impressed with the idea of spending money to see it. I was truly surprised when I finally did see it. It is not a visually enhanced movie, but you see a side of Eddie Murphy that is surprising and refreshing, his character is fairly polite, not too much on the 4 letter word band wagon, and actually shows compassion. I would say that he shows these same qualities in the Dr. Dolittle movies, but really... talking animals??? It is a heart warming story, protection of a childs life... see it and judge for yourself. I think you will be surprised and want to add this one to your collection!

3-0 out of 5 stars for its time
for its time it was a great movie but it was just so cheesy compared to now it sucked.. lol so idk if u can watch the movie realizing they didnt have all the stuff then they do now it was a okay movie

2-0 out of 5 stars Golden Balls
This film made a lot of money on its release, and i was not surprised: there was action comedy, and Charles Dance not pronouncing his "j"'s coupled with some special effects circa 1978. what more could it need?

And yet...for some reason, after watching this film, i felt somehow unfulfilled. Perhaps it was not explaining who the real bad guy was(i'm sorry, Forces Of Evil is not enough for me). Maybe it was the low low grade action. Maybe it was just the Forces of Evil surrounding me, but the truth is, i just couldn't bring myself to be able to like this film.

It is however not all bad, This is Eddie Murphy on vintage "Trading Places" style form, which is always worth the laugh, and there is one dream sequence which is so surreal its...well, surreal.

Despite this however, my suggestion would be to watch it on TV rather than buy it. it just aint worth the nuggets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie-Powerful Witness!!!
This is an excellent movie! I saw it a few years ago and then again recently on TBN. The acting was truly superb and very convincing, too. Although not of Asian descent, I work in cross-cultural ministry with Asian-American college students and young adults. So the cultural things in reference to China were very helpful.
More than the above, I think this movie is a very powerful tool for evangelism. Many modern day Christians in America should see this movie. It will strengthen and challenge your Christian faith beyond measure. I'm glad that this movie is still around and still being shown on t.v. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith in God can move mountains
This story is an amazing statement of faith in the power of God. The most amazing thing is that it is true! Nora Lam went through persecution unknown by most Christians with unwavering faith in the heavenly Father. Her life is nothing short of a miracle and an example for others to follow. Let us all pray that we will never have to undergo such horrible circumstances that would test our faith to those limits.

5-0 out of 5 stars -------
This story is amazing. I am blood-related to Nora Lam [the basis of the story] though I cannot go into detail of our relation due to privacy policies. I hear many of Nora's life stories from my parents and relatives, and seeing the movie was such an inspiration. The story brings her story back to life again and I feel as if I were struggling with her in the movie. After seeing this movie, you build a sense of compassion for yourself and you gain more strength to leading yourself. The inspiration of religion helps the viewer recognize the importance of religion. You will have finished this movie with a new perspective of life and of life in China.

3-0 out of 5 stars Based on a true story
This is a film story about a young girl that is part of the new China. Because she gets the short end of the stick by the government for being one of the privileged class, she jumps from the frying pan into the fire. Because "God hears the cry of the poor" not the privileged class, and she is still from a privileged class. Before you cry miracle remember who put her there in the first place.

The acting is great. Julia Nickson-Sole is convincing as Sung. The film would have been more credible if it was not produced and paid for by a death cult, which uses a person, nailed to a stick and being tortured as their symbol

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This movie is AWESOME. To watch and hear about the mannnnnny miracles and blessings that the Lord bestowed upon Nora Lam was incredible. Not to mention.... the mustard seed of faith that Nora Lam had in the beginning that blossomed into her becomming a wonderful Christian. Nora Lam is an inspiration to us all. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars So bad it's GOOD!
One of the worst action, war, and Kong fu films ever made, but with the best story line. This "prequel" was made before MISSING IN ACTION. This
film - so bad it's good - is from the same filmmakers who gave us other 'so bad it's good' films like OVER THE TOP and DELTA FORCE. MISSING
IN ACTION 3 is somewhat better, but it's nothing you haven't seen a 100 times before.

1985. MGM. 136 MINS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ruthless movie (minor spoiler in review)
I enjoy simple action movies like "Missing In Action 2," and would probably have given this a higher rating except for the film's relentless (and I mean relentless) brutality. The bad guys get clobbered at the end, but until then, "Missing in Action 2" is just non-stop threats, arguments, fights, and physical and mental torture. All of this is directed against the American POW's. It wears you out psychologically. Don't watch this movie if you're looking to be cheered up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing In Action The Beginning.
I just recently viewed this movie again. I enjoy it more each time. I like action movies and expect to be entertained. The action of this movie and the theme of good over evil adds to the enjoyment of this movie. Some people are not only offended by the portrayal of how the Viet Cong treated our soldiers, but refuse to believe such war attrocities occurred.. Some pretty awful tortures were performed in this movie involving fire, rats and even Viet Cong whores being used to torture and humiliate the POWs. This is not for the squeamish who know nothing about war. But if you like action movies, this one is great.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Beginning is all Comic Book Fantasy.
Missing in Action 2: The Beginning tells the tale of how James Braddock and a select few were captured, then tortured, and finally escaped (...) Vietcong. It's 100% jingoistic revenge fantasy as Braddock eventually busts loose, then heads. Soon Tek Ho plays a villain so cartoonishly evil you wonder why the filmmakers did not give him an eyepatch, facial scar, and a handle bar moustache to twirl as he cackles with sadistic glee. Formula fun for Norris fans only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing in Action II
First of all, the review by someone who cannot spell does not
do justice to this process. Chuck Norris movies are some of the best movies made. Clearly, he does a grand job of portraying the MIAs of Vietnam...reviewers with no background of Vietnam should not even try to write a review. I would definitely give this movie and his Delta Force a big thumbs up!!! You will not lack for action and patriotism with any of his "war" movies. ... Read more

Description

At the close of the 19th century, the British branded the Hmar people of northeast India as "the worst headhunters." It was a label well deserved at the time. But in 1910, a single copy of the gospel of John came into this village and changed the course of history for the Hmar people. Throug h that single copy of John's Gospel, Chawnga, the father of Rochunga Pudaite, was introduced to a revolutionary "new life in Christ." He and a few tribesmen "forsook all and followed Christ." Chawnga believed that Rochunga was God's chosen instrument to bring the Scriptures to the entire Hmar tribe in their own language. This is the story of Rochunga's personal pilgrimage. It is an unforgettable saga of his dedication to a vision and of the Lord's direction in his life. Filmed in India, Hawaii, Scotland and America, this beautiful film will be enjoyed by the entire family. ... Read more
