4-0 out of 5 stars My review of The Magic School Bus: For lunch
Let me begin by saying that this is all a fantasy. Or pretty much everything in this video. But maybe again, this all could be not true. First of all shrinking a bus. Now if your teacher let you stay behind while the rest of your class goes on a field trip, would you be happy, and then get suspicious about your teacher letting you stay behind. When The Magic School Bus begins, Arnold (voiced by Danny Tamberlli) is helping Wanda (Lisa Yamanaka) break a record to get two free tickets to action mountain, and to get to get the free tickets, you have to chew gum for over 6 hours. Wanda could have done the chewing, but she got a new filling. But Arnold shallows the gump when Wanda hits, him, she gets kinda mad with him. Then Arnold's teacher Ms. Frizzle (Lilly Tomlin) announces that they are heading for a field trip, and then Ms. Frizzle lets Arnold stay back, but while Arnold enjoys his favorite snack (cheezie wheezies), little does he know that Ms. Frizzle has shrunk the bus and the rest of Arnold's classmates in the bus and the bus goes into Arnold's mouth. Which in real life, could never happen. The class goes really fast though Arnold's digestion system (but it takes over 10 hours to digest). But please remember this is a 30 minute show, and they had to make them go though it really fast. If you or your kids love The Magic School Bus, get this tape, or this would be good to watch if you ever wanted to learn about the digestive system, this would be another good reason to watch, but if you wanted to learn more about the other systems in the body, then you have to find something else to watch or take a trip to learn more about the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our 4 Year Old Loves This Video!
We have purchased this and all other available MSB videos. This one is one of my child's favourites. It focuses on the human digestive system. He has been watching this video since he was 2 and can tell you all about the digestive tract, villi, and the rest. I highly recommend this video and most in this series.

3-0 out of 5 stars It Was Interesting
It helps me see what's inside you. Sometimes it made me laugh. I recommend for parents to buy it for their kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a ride!
Imagine going for a wild ride from a mouth on down! Thats just what a bus load of kids did! What better way for kids to learn where all that food goes! There is suspense for the adults too! Just how is the producer going to handle the subject of the bitter end? All I can say is they always have the best way of explaning things to kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the digestive system
This is a wonderful video for young children. My 4 and 6 year old loved it. It is a descriptive and fun adventure inside the digestive system, showing the process food goes through as it enters our mouth. It is fun and entertaining and the children learn a great deal about digestion. I am a nutritionist and food scientist myself and I recommend this video to all parents. I think this is a great introduction for the children. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good entertainment

Not one of Lilly's greatest, of course, but anything with Lilly Tomlin in it is bound to be entertaining. The theme revolving around shrinking people (i.e.: The Incredible Shrinking Man, I shrunk My Kids, etc., etc.), is wearing a little thin by now, so everything depends upon the cast--in this case, Lily Tomlin, and she does hold it all together with little help.

It is a pleasant way to spend an evening, with a few laughs for everyone. Lily plays at least three parts. It is hard to imagine a world without people of genius like Lily, who can make even the mundane seem funny. She is one of the great comediennes. I place her in the same rank as the late Gilda Radner. I can offer no higher praise than that! She is reason enough for watching any film, for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok movie
I thought this movie was OK. I saw it on Tv a couple days ago and thought it was a little corny but it was funny. The effects weren't that great either but it was funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars galaxy glue!
this, i think, is one of lily tomlin's best along with 9 to 5. its about a normal mother who starts having problems when she begins shrinking due to houehold products. this is such a classic i am surprised it is out of print.
i remember watching it as a kid and laughing at the part of edith ann. years later when renting it, that part was taken out. i have no idea why. years after that i happened to catch it on tv and they were showing the original version with that scene added in.Why did they take that part out? Hmmmmmm that is what i love about lily tomlin. she can play all these characters so hilariously. and that part where the gorilla gave the people in the elevator a less then friendly sign language gesture was hilarious. if you can find this watch this. lily tomlin is one of my favorite actresses and i wish she was in more movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Constant entertainment!
This has to be one of my all time favorite comedies! Though the title is b-flickish, the quality is not. With funny jingles for in movie products, multiple character roles by Lily Tomlin, and comedy with a likeness to other films staring Lily, like "Big Business", this films safe enough for the little ones, and funny enough not to be allowed to go un-watched!

The story needs no explination, just read the title! Then imagine the fame someone would get (wanted, or as unwanted as it might be), the humor of trying to run a normal household while loosing inches to feet of height in just days, and the danger of coverup and possible profit by those who lead to the unusal affliction.

Get it! Watch it! And watch it again! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sick? MSB to the rescue!
Ms. Frizzles team of reporter kids is going to get the "inside story". Ralphie is sick with a sore throat and the bus is going in! They see bacteria destroying Ralphie's throat cells. They see white blood cells marking the bacteria with antibodies and consuming them! It is a war worth watching! And when the "backup support" (medicine) arrives the battle is being won! An exiting way for kids to understand what happens in there when they get sick!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining! My preschooler can't get enough of it.
This is the very first Magic School bus video I bought for my 3.5 year old. He loves it. He watches it again and again. Now he is hooked on Magic school bus videos. The video shows where honey comes from in an entertaining way that captured his attention. An educational video that invites him to wanting to learn more about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Inaccurate, But Get A Kick Out Of The Fun!
Now, I've enjoyed "The Magic Schoolbus" series since I was a kid (I'm a teen now - get it?). And I must say, its adventure in the beehive is one of the most exciting I've ever seen, which made me so glad to find this episode on video, so that I could share the pleasure I had with my little brother.

The schoolbus "In A Beehive" mainly but vaguely discusses the various tasks of the bees in a typical hive, from the transportation of honey, to the conscientious care of the Queen Bee. Again, most of the facts are inaccurate, coupled with a fictitious plot that "swarms" the whole point of being informative (pardon the pun). But, hey, you still have a great theme song, with the whole class gang, and the ever-adored Miss Frizzle whom I really want to have as my teacher! This "stinging" story of the "pests" in nature still gives a rather endearing tale as to why bees, well, sting. So, it's really no harm to go BUZZ OFF and get this video. Mainly for the little ones, though - the "big" people may just brush this off as childish scientific ridicule. ... Read more

A visit to a dinosaur dig turns exciting when the Magic School Bus becomes a time machine that takes Ms. Frizzle's class back 67 million years, to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. There, they must put aside their prejudices and preconceptions about dinosaurs, as they investigate which are dangerous carnivores, and which are herbivores. By noting their observations in their science journals, the class classifies dinosaurs according to their diets. An encounter with a T-rex concludes the journey. They realize that dinosaurs come in all shapes and sizes, and use the scientific methods of recording data and hypothesizing to reach their conclusions. They also discover how scientists today use evidence such as teeth to tell which dinosaurs ate what. A female paleontologist answers their questions at the end, explaining which part of the journey was fact, and which was speculation. Kids will learn how scientists work, as they enjoy this exciting adventure in time travel. --Elisabeth Keating ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arnold to the rescue
Miss Frizzle and the kids visit a dinosaur dig and when the kids start making comments about all dinosaurs being meat eaters and terrifying it's time for another field trip. The Magic School Bus takes them back in to time to the late Cretaceous period along with a fossilized dinosaur egg. There they find out that there were both plant and meat eaters and that some dinosaurs were good parents.

Arnold, who if you've seen some of the other videos is generally frightened of Miss Frizzle and her field trips, rises to the occasion in more ways than one when his class is threatened by a Tyranasaurus Rex.

My kids love this video.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good dinosaur movie. Great female characters too!
This is a great video. It shows many dinosaurs, and my daughter (2 yrs old) loved the dinosaur egg! (she call this the egg movie). It is also informative. What I like the most is that the paleontologist, whom the class meets at an escavation site, is a woman with a sense of humor and great enthusism for her search. It is a realistic and great female role model, not the fake token woman scientist in science fiction movies.

Hold on to your school bags: it's time for another eccentric day with Ms. Frizzle, the wacky and winsome science teacher who stars in Scholastic's popular program Magic School Bus. Science concepts come alive when the Friz leads her inquisitive class on extraordinary adventures inside a magical bus, in this wildly watchable program based on Joanna Cole's books. Ms. Frizzle explores the secrets of color for today's lesson in "Makes a Rainbow." From her bag of tricks comes a dazzling light-powered pinball machine, which she hides away in her classroom closet. To win at pinball, students must figure out how to light up all six colors of the rainbow by learning the principles of light, wavelength, prisms, and refraction. To help them, the Friz piles her class into the school bus and shrinks it to the size of a Tonka trunk for a journey inside the pinball machine. Things go badly awry, however, when the bus hits a prism and splits into six colors, including six hues of every student. It gets worse, however, when the school's principal, Mr. Rule, is about to make a colorful discovery of his own. To reinforce the film's concepts, repeat showings and follow-up discussions are recommended. And lest viewers become confused when the innovative program blurs fantasy and scientific reality (like when the speed of light is remarkably slowed in the pinball machine), a science review at the story's end clarifies the two. Moreover, children are reminded of the program's larger message, that if you keep asking questions, you'll continue getting answers. (Ages 6 to 9). --Lynn Gibson ... Read more

The irresistible pull of chocolate is the catch for this lesson from the dandy kids series The Magic School Bus. The kids give a cocoa tree to their intrepid teacher Ms. Frizzle (voiced by Lily Tomlin) for an Earth Day present. When the tree yields only one bean, it's off to the rain forest to discover why. The life of a cocoa plant, including how pods, mud puddles, and bugs play a part in its development should have the little ones curious (and a bit shocked) about how the basic ingredient in chocolate comes to be. All this plus side trips to visit iguanas and other animals of the rain forest. (Ages 6 to 12) --Doug Thomas ... Read more

Enjoyable, well produced and very respectful. It's interesting to examine the interdependence of everything in the rainforest's ecosystem. "I liked how everyone solved the mystery together." Best for ages 2 to 5.

This 90-minute video contains the 3 favorite episodes as picked by kids on the Magic School Bus Web site. (Ages 5 to 10)

Gets Lost in Space
When the planetarium is closed for a field trip, it's no problem for Ms. Frizzle--star of Scholastic's award-winning Magic School Bus series. She simply takes the class to outer space on the Magic School Bus turned spaceship. As she puts it, outer space is "the only planetarium open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." The kids explore each of the first four planets with Ms. Frizzle, until they hit an asteroid and are separated from their teacher. They must play detective to figure out which planet she's on, working from a few clues. For example, Ms. Frizzle tells them, "The colder it gets, the hotter you are to finding me." Kids age 5 and older will learn interesting facts about each planet throughout the adventure. They'll also pick up information about relative distances in space, how gravity works, and why Earth is the only planet in our solar system that can sustain life. --Elisabeth Keating

In a Pickle
Mrs. Frizzle is on trial in this episode from the popular PBS show. Seems Keesha's prized cucumber has disappeared over spring break and she suspects Mrs. Frizzle of foul play (or eating it). The unflappable teacher has other ideas, shrinking the class down to minuscule size. Gooey and yucky (the way kids like it), the show teaches the students how microbes have very particular assignments in changing things and battling bacteria. They can even do mysterious things to cucumbers. --Doug Thomas

The Busasaurus
A visit to a dinosaur dig turns exciting when the Magic School Bus becomes a time machine that takes Ms. Frizzle's class back 67 million years to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. There, they must put aside their prejudices and preconceptions about dinosaurs as they investigate which are dangerous carnivores and which are herbivores. With a nod to Preston Sturges's classic dark comedy Unfaithfully Yours (about a man who fantasizes about murdering his possibly philandering wife), this 1980 cotton-candy-feminist-vendetta film concerns a monstrous boss (Dabney Coleman) whose more capable underlings dream of ways of punishing him. That much of the film is particularly fun, but the rest of it descends into silliness when the women stumble onto a real-life opportunity to teach him a lesson. Fonda, the biggest star in the film at the time, takes a back seat to Parton's and Tomlin's showier roles. Written and directed by the late Colin Higgins (who made a lot of people happy in the '70s with his script for the beloved Harold and Maude). --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Before
"9 to 5" remains a favorite comedy of mine 24 years after its release. I first saw it in the movie theaters back in 1980. I thought it was hilarious then and I still think it is hilarious now. Dabney Coleman was the perfect evil boss. He was a sexist, bigoted jerk of a human being who treated his employees like dirt. Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton rounds out the cast as the disgruntled employees. Although we use computers now, office antics remains unchanged in the 21st century. Who hasn't dreamt of killing their boss? "9 to 5" really epitomized just how funny, if not torturous working in an office can be. I know from experience. Thankfully I never encountered a male supervisor who sexually harassed me like Dabney Coleman did to Dolly Parton in the movie. My personal favorite moment in the film was when the women were at Dolly's home kicking back on some wacky tobaccy. The fantasies were hysterical. They still crack me up to this very day. I personally loved Lily Tomlin's fantasy as Snow White. The longer I work in an office environment, the more I can relate to films like "9 to 5" and "Office Space". Talk about life imitating art.

I hope this is a fantasy movie. Dabney Colman plays Franklin Hart Jr. (...) Mr. Hart can not understand what is happening to him. It seems that everything he does backfires. Violet (Lily Tomlin) gets upset because he promotes someone that she trained, around her. After making overtures to the married Doralee (Dolly Parton), she threatens to turn him from a rooster to a hen with one shot. At one point Violet fantasizes about and may have put “Rid-a-Rat” in his coffee, which leads to a great hospital scene. Violet says, “I'm no fool. I've killed the boss, you think they're not gonna fire me for a thing like that?!” He eventually spends time literally hanging around Judy’s (Jane Fonda) house while the Trio of women get the goods on his side business of pilfering from their company. Dabney Coleman outdoes himself in the hunting scene. (...)

4-0 out of 5 stars For Every Office Worker Who's Wanted to Bump Off the Boss...
Saw this movie over 15 times before it even hit video, let alone DVD - saw it in a theatre when I was younger, and it quickly became one of my favorite comedies.

The casting is brilliant. Lily Tomlin plays Violet, an office manager with a sexist-egotistical-lying-hypocritical-bigot of a boss, Mr. Hart (Dabney Coleman), who she is trying to put up with because she's in line for a promotion (even though she's had her share of seeing men SHE TRAINED promoted above and before her). Dolly Parton is Doralee, buxom secretary to the lecherous Mr. Hart, who put up with his advances and pinching and staring because she needs the job (little does she know, thanks to him and his mouth, she's also - behind her back - known as the office floozy). Jane Fonda is Judy, a newly divorced woman who's husband left her for his secretary - she's just started at Consolidated, and is having a hard time adjusting to office life.

In one bad -- really bad -- day, Mr. Hart manages to push all three of these women to the breaking point ... and that night, over good barbecue and an even better joint, the women fantasize about what it would be like to kill their boss; each woman has a unique and juicy way of doing him in that is both funny and suitable.

The plot changes drastically from here, when each woman systematically -- and accidentally -- puts a variation of her plan to action (or so she thinks), leading to all sort of misunderstandings, uncovering of big business schemes, kidnapping -- even a change in office decor!

The casting is ideal; this was Dolly Parton's first film, and she positively glows as Doralee. Jane Fonda, playing against type, is terrific as the mousy Judy, who finally finds her backbone after dealing with her husband's abandonment. And Lily Tomlin is awesome as Violet, a widow with four kids who's just trying to give her family a good life ... even if it means dumping her boss's body to do it (don't worry - this doesn't give the film away!).

It's rare to find someone who hasn't seen this great comedy -- anyone who's ever worked in an office can relate to it especially. It's funny, watching it now and seeing all the old typewriters and other office machinery that has now been replaced by computers in 2004 -- kind of dates the movie, in a way, but also adds to its charm. One of the best comedies of the 1980's, "Nine to Five" is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon - and a satisfying tale of justice served for every one of us who's had a hellacious boss.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your average working stiff movie.
It is no secret that there are many managers in this world who are nothing more than tokenheads of their departments. The real movers, shakers, and go-getters are the underlings that work for the manager.

And so is the case of Franklin M Hart, Jr., (perfectly played by Dabney Colemna) a vice-president at Consolidated. Oh sure, he was nice enough as he worked his way to the top of this male-dominated firm. But once he got there, he started stepping on everyone below him, including Violet Newstead (the ever funny Lily Tomlin), the office manager. As if that wasn't bad enough, Mr. Hart continously tries to seduce his unavailable, and equally unwilling, secretary, Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton, making her movie debut). And when the new girl, Judy Bernly (Jane Fonda), accidentally makes a mess in the copier room, Mr. Hart tells her like it is.

After a while, the three put-upon women become friends, and after smoking a single joint together, start fantasizing about how they would put Mr. Hart in his place. Soon, however, fantasy becomes reality when Mr. Hart finds out that Violet accidentally put rat poison in his coffee.

In an attempt to stay out of jail, Violet, Doralee, and Judy take Mr. Hart hostage while they formulate a plan. Soon they discover that Mr. Hart has illegally made a profit at Consolidated's expense, and set out to get the evidence needed that will keep Mr. Hart from going to the police. But it will take nearly three weeks for the home office to send them the information. Will they be able to keep Mr. Hart under lock and key until then? Better yet, can they fool the office into thinking that Mr. Hart is still at work even though he's not?

"9 to 5" is one of those movies that you can't help but to enjoy. Funny, witty, and smart, anyone who has ever worked for a manager that didn't deserve to be a manager will enjoy watching fantasy become reality (at least, in the movie).

Released in 1980, this movie earned over $100 million (a relative rarity back then). It also earned Dolly Parton an Oscar nomination (Best Music - Original Song), three Golden Globes nominations (Best Motion Picture Actress - Musical/Comedy; Best Original Song - Motion Picture; New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture - Female), and a Grammy nomination (Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special). She also won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Song.

The success of the movie resulted in two short-lived TV series (first one from 1982-1983; second one from 1986 - 1988), both of which starred Dolly Parton's sister, Rachel Dennison.

If you've ever dreamed of watching your manager get his or her just desserts, then this movie will provide you with plenty of laughs (and possibly an idea or two).

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sane Mutiny
What happens when a group of women working as secretaries for a big company get tired of their tyrannical, chauvinistic, not-very-competent boss? The answer is lots of laughs, if the women are Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Jane Fonda, and the boss is the deliciously despicable Dabney Coleman. At first, the women just daydream and chat about silly revenge plots. Then, a golden opprtunity for real revenge comes along, and they take their shot at realizing their daydreams.

Jane Fonda was the bigget name in the cast when the film came out, but she, while okay here, is outshone by Tomlin, Coleman, and Parton. The first half of the film is funnier and better than the second half, but it's a worthwhile watcher. To buy it? Only if you get a good price on a good used one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as entertaining as the others!
My preshooler (3.5 yrs old) has recently discovered MSB and is now hooked on it. It is the only thing he wants to watch. But not this one! This one did not get the kind of enthuastic response that the others (the Bee Hives, Salmon, Lunch (Arnold's digestive system), etc.) got.

5-0 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie
This movie is one of my favorite MSB videos. It is a true oldie but goodie video. It teaches kids about how sound is made and what it can do in the world today. During the movie, the class has to performe infront of parents, but Carlos, who has to make his own instrument, can't seem to find the right sound. With the help of Mrs. Frizzel and some other friends, Carlos saves the day with his musical instrument. ... Read more

What keeps airplanes aloft? How do birds fly? How do pilots steer a plane? These questions and more are explored in this installment of the award-winning science videos from Scholastic. Ms. Frizzle's class is taking part in a model-airplane contest to explore the principles of aerodynamics, when Mrs. Frizzle shrinks herself and a few class members so that they can fly their plane themselves. When the remote control breaks, the kids in the airplane must learn to fly it. Those remaining on the ground must somehow turn the Magic Schoolbus into an airplane so they can rescue their classmates. Through trial and error, the whole class discovers that in order to fly, an object needs to have wings, moving air, power, and steering. They discover firsthand how birds' wings act as propellers, and how birds and planes steer with rudders and flaps. Finally, with some help from an eagle, they learn to take off, fly, and land. Kids will learn about aerodynamics by observing what works and what doesn't as the characters try to stay aloft. Or, as Ms. Frizzle puts it: "Sometimes you have to do the wrong stuff to find out what the right stuff is supposed to be." --Elisabeth Keating ... Read more
