4-0 out of 5 stars A very good film with Esther Williams!
I think this is a very good Esther Williams film. Though there is not a lot of fancy swimming scenes, most is done in the ocean, while swiiming the channel. The story line and songs are delightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun movie!
As a former synchro swimmer and coach of synchro, this movie is a treat. Any Esther Williams movie is enjoyable to me, but this one is also very cute with Tom and Jerry taking an underwater dip with Esther. It's a great movie for kids and adults! Highly recommended -- way cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent Williams musical
Esther Williams and Fernando Lamas star DANGEROUS WHEN WET, a delightful musical about an American girl and her dream to swim the English Channel.

Katie Higgins (Esther Williams), and the rest of the health-savvy Higgins clan (William Demarest, Charlotte Greenwood, Donna Corcoran and Barbara Whiting), are all invited by the publicity frontman of Liquapep (Jack Carson), to come to England and swim the English Channel.

Along the way, Katie gets involved with a dashing Frenchman (Fernando Lamas) and experiences her first taste of love.

Featuring a tuneful score including "I've Got Out Of Bed On The Right Side", and a fantastic cartoon sequence where Williams cavorts with Tom and Jerry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, good time movie
I have loved this movie ro years and was thrilled to find it on Amazon! The story line is cute, the acting is witty, and if you have ever loved a musical, this is for you! There's even an interlude with Tom and Jerry. Fun movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Addicting!
I have been watching this videos since I was 13 years old. It's a family favorite. My sisters and I still sing all the songs! Esther Williams is so fun to watch in this film and does a wonderful job portraying Katie Higgins the "farm girl" who wants to swim the English Channel in order to win money to "buy a bull"! It's just a really sweet film. Ferando Lamas and Esther Williams are so adorable together, they seem like an unlikely couple, but on screen they really can light it up. I highly recommend it to musical lovers everywhere and anyone who just wants to relax with a really good movie. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good fun for Jane Powell fans
I saw this film several years ago, so my memory's a little rusty, but since there are no other reviews for "Rich, Young and Pretty" yet I'd thought I'd give a quick synopsis for those of you just browsing.

Jane Powell stars as a young Texan who is taken to Paris by her father, played by Wendell Corey. While there, she runs across her mother (Danielle Darrieux) , who is working in a night club with her boyfriend (the oh-so handsome Fernando Lamas). This turns out to be a problem, since Powell had been told by her father that her mother was deceased. Oops! Hilarity ensues. I wouldn't say this film is in the first or second tier of Powell pictures ("Two Weeks with Love" and "A Date With Judy" are my faves) and it does drag a bit in spots, but Jane is always a delight to watch and it does have it's bright spots. Among them is a charming rendition of "We Never Talk Much" , a fun song I really like.

You might want to check out "Rich, Young and Pretty" if you are a fan of Jane or old Technicolor musicals. Grade: B- ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dino Cheese
You can watch "The Lost World" one of two ways.

1) A maddeningly poor version of the great Arthur Conan Doyle novel, turning memorable characters into crude stereotypes, and adding a half-dozen others so you won't notice there's only one brief sequence featuring "dinosaurs" (magnified lizards with rubber collars, tortured into listlessly attacking each other).

2) As an early '60s camp fest, what with the babealicious cave girl, Fernando "you look mahvelous" Lamas as a vengeful native, and Claude Rains as a peppery pipsqueak Professor Challenger -- not to mention Irwin Allen's trademark colored-lights-on-styrofoam special effects. Best of all, Jill St. John (an Annette Bening without irony) in her pink boots, who announces "I can ride, fly, and shoot better than any man I know" and then spends the balance of the movie shrieking and running for the strong arms of David "Al" Hedison. Or is it Al "David" Hedison?

Anyway, stick with the sweet, rather innocent 1925 silent version... Conan Doyle loved it and it's still miles ahead of every subsequent "Lost World" movie -- including the recent Bob Hoskins "ecologically correct" CGI fiasco.

4-0 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER, BUT STILL WORTH 10 BUCKS!
Irwin Allen's 1960 version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic dinosaur adventure, and the Willis O'Brien 1925 classic of the silent era. A band of explorers travel to an ancient plateu in South America, and encounter gigantic prehistoric beasts. The actors are great (to to Allen form, he made up for the poor special effects with big time actors) including Michael Rennie (THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL), Claude Rains (THE WOLF MAN) Jill St. John (DIOMANDS ARE FOREVER) Fernando Lamas, and many more! Sadly, only lizards with phony make-up aplinces are blown up on film to tremendous size. But using real lizards does have a cetain charm, and the motion is realistic because it is real! So all in all, good production values, good acting, exeptable special effects, a 4 star movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved Lost World
I loved this movie. I know it's been bashed a lot by today's audiences, but you have to consider that when it was made special effects were not what they are now.
I think it's the story that counts. My two cents anyway.

In addition, what also impresses me, is that several scenes and actors reapeared in "Voyge to the Bottom of the Sea (series)" and other Irwin allen productions. It's great to see earlier performances as well as the inevitable stock footage Irwin and Fox used.

Especially of note are really great performances of David(Al) Hedison (later Capt. Crane in Voyage), and Ms. Marcus (the native girl) who shows up later on Voyage both as the same native girl, and also as a love interest for a ghostly u-boat captain! I think it's rather fun to see the orig. movie while picking out 'hey-that was used over there'scenes)

As I said, the story itself is good. It's entertaining, and doesn't try too hard.

I think it's worth the purchase and I'd like to see it released in widescreen format as it was originally shown. You miss some things in the regular format, but hey, it's not avail.in widescreen, so I'm just glad to have it at all. It hasn't been avai. for awhile at all.

I'd suggest you just settle down in a comfy chair and just enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A land where monsters live"
Poor Willis O'Brien was slated to do stop-motion spx for this film
but due budget oversights future "Towering inferno" director Irwin
Allen handed 20th Century Fox his 1st unintentional "disaster" film

Claude Rains who as the reknowned Professor Challenger leads the
cast including Michael Rennie,Jill St.John,David Hendison,Fernando
Lamas and "frosty the poodle" onto an amazon plateau where time is
frozen and prehistoric animals still exist. Their lives are put in
even more jeopardy when they find themselves stranded.

Dispite it's flaws,I still love this flim for what it tries to be
lavish epic with a supercast of characters, but will always be my
haunt is how at the time of production (released in 1960) could a
special effects crew STILL use the same standards from the early
matinee days of cinema. Right down to the projected green spider
(Bert I.Gordon) when lower case B films such as "lost contintent"
(1951)used stop-motion animation Maybe there was a time factor.

The tape is excellent quality this Fox series also includes the
original trailer which is always a hoot for me but where is Fox's
DVD version in widescreen maybe.....no definitely!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Sci-FI Movie for the Time
I remember seeing this movie as an early teenager and found it to be excellent for the time. Compared to movies today it seems very poor but it was a classic "B" movie for the times. I recommend it for anyone's video library ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Great Movie
When is this movie going to DVD? This one is the best of all the Racquel Welch Westerns--It has plenty of action and great storyline--The best part with Racquel is when she is taking a shower from a railroad water tank to confuse the Mexican soldiers that are on a passing train--who cannot help but look? She is dressed but the clothes are tight!!! What a scene!!! Plenty of action in this movie-especially the love scene with Jim Brown--this along with Bandeloro are the best--get them both---DVD PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL
I wasnt even born yet when this film came out but it was great. Great in the sense of good actors(Jim Brown, Burt Reynolds and Fernando Lamas), good performance, good sountrack once more and action-western, what could be better?......Not until last year 2003 did I know that Victor Newman(Young and the Restless) was the Fernando Lamas's right hand man in the film!!!! What a shock!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Action Western South of the Border
This is a somewhat underrated action film set during the Mexican Revolution with James Brown as a deputy who crosses the border to bring back Burt Reynolds for the stolen 100 rifles. Eventually Brown and Reynolds get involved in the Revolution through Raquel Welch . Brown and Reynolds play well off each other as they go up against Fernando Lamas and his Federal army. Director Tom Gries put together some great action sequences. That combined with Jerry Goldsmith's score makes for a film that really delivers. Hans Gudegast (Eric Braeden) brilliantly underplays his part as a German military advisor to Lamas. This film helped launch Burt Reynolds into stardom. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Merry Widow VHS
The quality of the VHS is not very good. The sound track is actually very bad. It must be a copy from some bad source.

5-0 out of 5 stars MGM gloss at it's best!
Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas light up the screen in MGM's watered-down version of Franz Lehar's operetta THE MERRY WIDOW.

Crystal Radek (Lana Turner) is invited to a forgotten little European kingdom where her dead husband was born, so she can attend the unveiling of a statue dedicated to his memory.

Little does she know that the Government is more interested in her 8-million-dollar inheritance than anything else! Count Danilo (Fernando Lamas) is called on to seduce Crystal and marry her, and ensure that her millions are put to use in the European back-water town.

Crystal gets wise, however, and decides that if Danilo is going to fall in love with anything, it will be her and not her money!

Featuring the delightful Una Merkel and Gwen Verdon leading the can-can chorus, it's full of plush sets and gorgeous costumes. One of MGM's most lavish and enjoyable musicals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing music, expert dancing, and gorgeous Lana Turner
The script is pedestrian but the dancing is superb. Picture Lana Turner at the height of her beauty dressed in fabulous gowns that showcase her hour-glass figure. The final waltz alone makes this video worth its price. Lana and Fernando whirl around a mirrored ballroom to the haunting strains of Lehar's "Merry Widow Waltz". The film demonstrates that, in addition to being beautiful, Turner was an incredibly graceful dancer. The music, Turner's poignant beauty, and fabulous dancing make this unforgettable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great film!
Elizabeth Taylor is wonderful in this film. Its good and very romantic. A remake of, " A Free Soul." I love this version.

Its also very sad as well.
I highly recommend it. Great story, and Elizabeth wears some lovley dresses in it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
THE GIRL WHO HAD EVERYTHING is a movie about a lawyer's daughter who falls in love with a gangster defended by her father. That's the whole story and for that reason the film never rises above mediocrity. It is a low budget undertaking but it does feature some good actors.

A very young Elizabeth Taylor has the starring role. William Powell plays the attorney and Fernando Lamas is the hardened criminal who is the object of Taylor's affection.

Director Richard Thorpe has made better movies including IVANHOE and THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN.

3-0 out of 5 stars Daughter of Priviledge falls for Son of the Mean Streets!
Updated Elizabeth Taylor-Fernando Lamas-William Powell version of 1931's Gable-Shearer-Barrymore "A Free Soul" that is more successful at showcasing the outstanding beauty of it's two young sex symbol leads than delivering an effective remake. Taylor is effective in her role, with obvious emphasis placed on looking her exceptionally pretty self as usual--and the future Mrs. Burton looks mighty pretty indeed with her fashionably short Italian haircut and stylish wardrobe any woman would kill for. She stars in the aptly titled role as good little rich girl Jean Latimer, a society goddess soon to be married to the equally wealthy and respected Court Vance. Latin Lothario Lamas plays infamous mob kingpin Victor Y. Raimondi, who easily entices a fascinated and willing Jean away from her dull fiancee and staid Social Register-smart set crowd with his dangerously intoxicating combination of smoldering good looks, forbidden passion, lusty machismo, and notorious outlaw stature. He, too, also looks mighty good here--especially in the pool scene where his fit physique is shown to perfection. William Powell lends strong support as Jean's adoring father Steve Latimer, a brilliant but besotted defense attorney who unwittingly brings the notorious mafioso into her life when agreeing to defend Victor against the feds in a highly-publicized trial. He comes to regret this and is infuriated at the thought of this greasy, no-good gangster defiling his darling daughter, and thus concocts a risky plan in order to make smitten Jean see Victor as the ruthless thug he really is behind the charming, handsome facade. Also lending fine support is handsome Gig Young as Vance Court (what kinda name is that?), Jean's decent but bland fiancee. Although it doesn't hold up as well against the original, still an interesting enough movie with capable performances to make it worth watching, especially if you're into stories consisting of the enduring archetypes of the good girl taking a walk on the wild side when falling for a bad boy! ... I have read several plot analysis written by the "pros" and they seem to be all wrong. There is no terrorist on the plane. Most fans of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink comedies like The Naked Gun and Hot Shots probably think the genre started with Airplane!, but Neil Simon's The Cheap Detective came two years earlier. It's a camp parody of Humphrey Bogart's 1940s detective flicks (particularly The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep), with a big dose of Casablanca thrown in for good measure. There's no point in describing the plot--it's little more than a series of cameos by just about every actor working in the 1970s, including Ann-Margaret, Eileen Brennan, Stockard Channing, James Coco, Scatman Crothers, Dom DeLuise, John Houseman, Marsha Mason, and Nicol Williamson. Peter Falk plays the detective and does a fine Bogey impression. Unfortunately, it's not Neil Simon's best work--he's better at character comedy such as The Odd Couple and The Goodbye Girl than this kind of slapstick--but there are a few good lines and the cast gives it their best. Louise Fletcher, not usually known for comedy, does a sharp satire of Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca, and Madeline Kahn never fails to entertain in a variety of disguises. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Nice catch Mr Pekinpah, I was almost a widow!'
About 70 minutes into the film enters Jezebel Desire (a sex starved Rumanian played to perfection by a very funny Ann-Margret) with her wheelchair bound husband (Sid Caesar), two minutes later, she's trying to push him into a very large open flaming fire, only just being caught by Sam (Peter Falk). Peter Falk is excellent in his role (underplayed and cool) and deals with each crisis as Bogey would have done.

All the female characters in The Cheap Detective have soild, yet very funny roles. They definately fair better then their male counterparts - Marsha Mason, Eileen Brennan, Stockard Channing, Louise Fletcher, Madeline Khan and Ann-Margret all play their characters with gusto. There are so many winks and nods to the 40's film noir genre especially The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep and Casablanca, now I can't watch one of them without laughing; in fact, whenever I'm watching one of those films I have to turn the film off and put The Cheap Detective on instead!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy "The Cheap Detective"--you'll love it!
"The Cheap Detective" is a yet another masterpiece penned by Neil Simon who brought you "The Odd Couple" and "California Suite." This film is excellent, starring a wonderful cast consisting of Peter Falk, Madeline Kahn, Dom DeLuise, Fernando Lamos, Eileen Brennen, Ann Margaret, Stockard Channing, James Coco,Louise Flecter, Marsha Mason, and Sid Caeser. "The Cheap Detective" showcases the talent of the late, great Madeline Kahn, in a role which required her to assume a multitude of names. Peter Falk fits the role of a tough-talking P.I. perfectly. Dom DeLuise is just stupid (in the funniest of ways) as a man who wears a horrible smelling cologne to keep his enemies away, and after contact with him suggests "bath in turpentine and you will be fine in the morning." Directed by Roger Moore (Neil Simon's "Murder by Death"), "The Cheap Detective reunites Peter Falk, Eileen Brennen, James Coco and James Cromwell. See it--if you like comedy, you'll love this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars What would you do with six lovely women?
Good All-Star cast. Excellent 1940 period piece. This 1978 makes you feel you are in the 1940's. Excellent sets. Not much of a mystery here, but lots of well-written comedic lines. What would you do with six lovely women at the same time? See MURDER BY DEATH (1976).

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb satire
An hilarious spoof of classic Bogart films. Falk fills the Bogie role, Fernando Lamas, Madeline Kahn and Eileen Brennan are excellent. If you appreciate Casablanca,The Maltese Falcon, and The Big Sleep, you will certainly enjoy not only the acting, but the stage settings as well. Outstanding

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest films of all time!!
If you loved "The Maltese Falcon", "Casablanca" and "Chinatown"... you will love this take off on all 3....

Falk showed us he has a real flare for comedy.... and the lines are immortal...

"If it's a piece you want, you can get it right here".... "My name is Barbara Stanwick".... "You are gonna get the damned papers!!".... "Quicker, Quicker!! ... Yes Sir?".... "Okay, now just ME!!".... "I wear disgustingly cheap perfume".... "I love it when you give me orders!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good adventure film with a great villan, and a bit of humor
Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole are troubleshooters for hire brought in by a railroad to rescue a hijcaked train in the southwest of 1914. Fernando Lamas has a great time playing a bandit (with all the stereotypes you don't expect to find in a 1970 film...though you can see elements of political awareness when our hereos buy a hotel that refused to rent rooms to the Hispanic family of the bad guy). Rod Taylor brings his typical light touch and charm to his role as the hero, leaving young Dennis Cole to do a lot of the action, that is climbing onto the moving train. Great cast with John McIntyre as the railroad owner and Micheal Ansara as the jailed brother of Lamas. The other hero of the show is the car...a 1914 Stutz Bearcat. Esther Williams stars as Katie Higgins, the daughter of an Arkansas dairy farmer. The Higginses keep a simple life, working their farm and swimming to stay fit until they meet the shady promoter (Jack Carson) of a vitamin tonic called Liquapep. Before you know it, they've been whisked across the ocean to compete in a swimming race across the English Channel. Fernando Lamas (who later married Williams in real life) appears on the scene as André, a dashing Frenchman who just might distract Katie from her training. Like any Esther Williams movie, Dangerous When Wet features plenty of silly humor and loads of music. There's also an animated sequence in which Katie swims through a cartoon sea with none other than Tom and Jerry. But can she make it through the icy waters of the Channel?
